You offensive coordinator Brian Flory wasn't perfect in his debut as a play collar, but certainly had some impressive moments. But we start with the latest on Sam Darnold's injury and explore what this offense will look like in his absence. You are listening to locked on Seahawks. Part of the locked on podcast network. Your team every day. Thank you for making us your first listen five days a week. Here he is, Rob rang in that familiar seat. Joining me once again. Good to see you again. I got to ask you this. As we record this, it's been about 24 hours. What a finish. What a play at the end. What a game. Now that you've had a chance to sit with it for about 24 hours, how do you feel about that performance? Dan, I'm still just stunned by the outcome of that football game.

3:02I mean, just the resiliency that the Seahawks showed, the improvement that as play collar, Brian Flory and Drew Locker showed in a second half of that game. Look, I've been a Drake May fan for an awful long time and believe that he has about as much upside as any young quarterback and all of the NFL to see him throw three interceptions in the fourth quarter alone. I still cannot believe the outcome of the game. Not that the Seahawks won. I thought that they were the more talented team, obviously playing at home. But given all of the curve balls essentially thrown their way early in that game with Sam Garneau's injury, the so many pre-stab penalties. And I just felt like this was new England's game to take and Seattle took it right back. And certainly we don't mean to bury the lead. We are going to talk about the defense because they made this all possible by allowing the Seahawks to hang around. But of course, the big story is the injury to Sam Garneau and he goes down on the fifth snap of the game. It's a hip injury. We all had to go to bed last night fearing the worst.

4:04We've seen hip injuries claim careers before in the NFL. If not, knock players out for significant chunks of a year or even entire years, all the news. It kind of came in a big flood this morning, first from the shepherds and the rapopores. And then Mike McDonald himself, it seems to be the case that after all the testing and the imaging and the X-rays that there is no fracture there, it sounds like the lab room is probably intact and Mike McDonald described it as a muscular issue. And it sounds like they're going to be able to avoid having going on injured reserves. So less than four games that he'll be out. Let's do this first before we talk about the performance of his understudy. Just the impact that it has on a team, the fifth play of the season, your star quarterback goes out after six months of an entire off season of us hearing about how much better Darnell looked and how much ownership he had taken and how he really had become the leader of this team. That's a massive blow for a team to have to deal with. I think it would be a knockout blow for most teams. And that's again, one of the areas in which I was just so impressed by the C-OX, just

5:07the maturity, just the cohesiveness of the team. I think that a lot of clubs would have essentially mailed it in. And it's a professional athlete. That doesn't happen very often, I don't think. But I just think that it saps away some of your optimism. But I think that it's a testament again just to the leadership of the team, that the players themselves, obviously Mike McDonald and his coaches. And then just drew off himself. I think that, and it truly, the C-OX had his back. And he performed very well also. So I think that that helped spark some of the optimism that they could get it done. And obviously they were able to do so. It certainly took a minute, five straight punts for that offense. And then the drive at the end of the half really didn't go anywhere as they were trying to get something done before half time. But it's just hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that here's Brian Flurry. And we're going to talk about him more exclusively in the second segment. He finally gets a shot to call plays on his own, the NFL. He gets his OC job.

6:08He spent the entire offseason work with Sam Darnal being ready for this moment. And then five snaps in. He has to pivot to to Drew Locke who didn't take a single practice rep in practice all week long leading up to this game. The adjustments he had to make, not just mentally, but in his call sheet, even. And I know what he was going to call out there had to be tremendous. Oh my goodness. Again, that to me was one of the most remarkable things about this is I think for a lot of our listeners and viewers and dads often you say, thank you, thank you to all of you out there. I think that there's a lot of folks out there who don't really appreciate how difficult it would be, how different the play calling would be for different orderbacks. Sam Darnal is going to have his special plays in which he is maybe the best in the world at these certain plays. Drew Locke certainly has some plays like that as well. But as you just pointed out that, I mean, when Drew Locke not taking a single snap with the COX throughout this week of practice, that's typical.

7:10Usually the starters get all of the reps. And then sometimes you're going to have a backup or the 13 quarterback is going to be playing the scout team, but not for your own offense. Then it's almost impossible, really, for a game to have started worse and ended better with obviously the defense saves the day at the very end. But the precision that Drew Locke showed, the confidence and just the caliber of the throws. I mean, some of those throws were as good as you possibly can be. You can be an all-pro quarterback. You're not going to spin it any better than Drew Locke did on a variety of those passes. I just thought that it was an incredibly impressive performance for number two. And one of the reasons why the ACFans, frankly, even with Sam Darnal potentially being out for a week or two or three, that ACFans should be pretty optimistic. This team can keep on rolling with Drew Locke at the starting quarter-night. Well, they certainly found their footing in the second half. This is the comparison. They're just six out of eight in the first half for 51 yards and took a sack.

8:13Second half, 10 out of 14, 136. The touchdown, 9.7 yards per attempt compared to 6.4 in the first half. We've seen him do this before, a couple of years ago in relief of Geno Smith for two and a half games. We all remember the great Monday night performance against the Eagles, redraw them down in one at the end. The arm talents never been an issue. And when you're studying quarterbacks in your scouting role, that stuff's easy to see, right? A guy has a good arm or he doesn't. He has a quick release or he doesn't. But how hard is it for you to evaluate and identify that certain something, that moxie if you will, in a quarterback that can allow him to thrive in situations that are not ideal as you would say last night was? Yeah, that was one of the most difficult things to evaluate. And I'll use the example I often use with a player that allows the U.K. fans absolutely hate. And that being said, this goes Brock Purtie. Of course, he was the very last pick of his draft a couple of years ago.

9:16And frankly, I know some of the reason why is because prior to that draft at the East West Shrine Bowl, then in Las Vegas, Brock Purtie was terrible. His Iowa State career was pretty solid. It was certainly day three draft worthy, fourth, fifth, brown draft worthy. And then he goes to East West Shrine Bowl and he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn in that form. That week of practice. And the game itself is a whole different storyline there. But just the week of practice, you should have seen the Scouts, Dan, who walked in there encouraged by that particular off-star game, Half the Quarterback position. And then he wasn't able to perform very well. But yet what he has shown is remarkable points and great ability on a snap to snap basis to basically turn a problem into a possible solution. That was not something that Drew Lock could always demonstrate throughout his college career at Missouri, or his previous NFL spots with the exception of some of those moments that

10:20you just mentioned here with the Scouts. What Drew Lock did on Wednesday night was, you know, it was damn near magical. I mean, it really was because again, all of the chips being stacked against him and instead of panicking, you know, performing under the brightest of bright lights. Now, I remember Brock Purtie's a freshman. He beat the Cougars. Or I think the Cougars actually won that game. But he had David Montgomery had a keen Butler. That was a really good team. I was impressed by him then. It doesn't surprise me what he's done. And as we record this, he's doing it again. He's looking pretty good in the first half down there in Australia against that great Rams defense. Okay, I can't wait to dig into this now with you and let me just start here before we talk about some of the good stuff. Two out of 11 on third down, I think. When I asked you last week, the first thing you were going to be looking for in judging Brian Flurry and his debut, you said, how's he going to do on third down? Specifically you said third and short.

13:25Third down's as a whole were bad. They also went on to in the red zone. You're overall thoughts, but specifically on third down, what'd you see there? Well, as you just said, I mean, two of 11 on third down, I think that that Brian Flurry even gave him some of the blame. I also think obviously the transition to a completely different quarterback. I think that that deserves some of the blame as well. I was actually very impressed by what Brian Flurry did. Obviously, winning the game at the end, there's just so much credit that can be spread around. But I think specifically about the short yardage had to play. So we saw see how lineup to do the AJ Barner Barnyard push push play. And obviously they had the mysterious off-sides penalty that was called. But still the fact that he was willing to use a play that we haven't seen in San Francisco 49ers use that play in the past. That was something, of course, that he kind of inherited from Clint Kubiak. And I wondered, okay, I saw them lineup and try to run that.

14:26How effective would it be? And then when it didn't work because of, again, pre-snap penalty, when the fourth and one play call to go with the past, I mean, the confidence that is showing in Drew Ock. The precision, of course, of Drew Ock making the play and Jackson Smith and Jigba E. Racing, any doubts about his breakaway speed. I thought that was all brilliant. But again, going back to the play call and decision by Brian Flurry, to me it was a bit of a flex, Dan. It was like, we trust you number two that you can get this done. And I'm trying to show my own independent thinking here of how we're actually going to win this game. I think if Seattle had just tried to run the ball, whether it be a full-back dive or off-tack on the Jerry on price or the bar yard. And if it did get stuffed, you would hear those groans. I thought that what Seattle needed at that point was a little bit of a shot in the arm. That's a little bit of aggression throwing the football. And I thought that Brian Flurry demonstrated that and so I'm that much more excited about

15:29what that he might be able to unveil here in the upcoming weeks, including with Drew Ock and obviously long-term assembly. We get so hung up on results and sometimes that's all we focus on. But I re-watched that red zone sequence again today when penalties really derailed that after they had, you know, third and one from the three. So a chance is they pointed out on the broadcast to take five shots at the end zone if they get it first down. And they didn't get plays off on those two pre-snap penalties. But you could see some hints, couldn't you? It looked like he had received some heat lined up in the backfield on one play. It looked like he had some pretty creative motions that he was starting before the penalties. Like you can, do you, do you watch for things like that sometimes even though the play doesn't end up being run? Oh, yeah, that's my favorite part of it. Just because so many people just kind of skip over that kind of stuff. And that's really where you can get some tells. You know, that was one of the things I was just so impressed with how the 49ers ran their running game a year ago was just how much pre-stab motion there was, how many counters and

16:33you know, asking the guards specifically to get out and block in the move. I just think that that Seattle, especially in Grace Able, but Anthony Bradford's pretty darn good, Alphamie, genders his size that they are well equipped to do so. And certainly, Jaylen Sandell was one of the more athletic centers in all of the NFL. So I was excited to see how the Seattle able to pull that off. And I love the fact that you mentioned Rashid Shaheed. I believe he had one catch yesterday. Statistically, he was basically invisible. But the fact that he was lined up in the backfield of that, and you can just imagine how much stress that would put on a average athletically speaking line backing core for the New England Patriots, especially in a short yardage type of situation where just a little bit more juice at the backfield might be able to get you that touchdown. I love the fact that the one catch that Rashid Shaheed did have was a short underneath route. Something that could have been, you know, one with these hitting stride, they might feel

17:33that make somebody miss similar to the way that he can do in the return game. It wasn't just the same old, same old nine route deep balls that you would expect of a spitzer like that. So there was the real creativity I thought being used by Brian Flurry in the Ceeox office. Yeah, I'm glad you mentioned Sundell, man, those three zone plays early on were Jadarian Price had some chunk plays. He all three of those plays, he got to that outside shoulder, those reach blocks. He looks like he's ready to take a step forward this year for sure. I had a hunch that it might look something like this and the numbers kind of confirmed it. Brian Flurry at a better debut as an offensive play collar than Clint Kubiak did a year ago. Kubiak had similar struggles on third down, similar struggles in the red zone. But look at that yards per play. Flurry 5.9 to Kubiak 4.6, Flurry 4.4 yards per rush to 3.2 for Kubiak. You know, we forget how frustrated most of the fan base was after week one last year. We didn't really see the scheme. We were promised. Now, we heard this offseason, same scheme, but it's going to be executed differently.

18:34What were some of the things you saw that differentiated Flurry last night from the way Kubiak approached things? Well, I think one of them was just the willingness to use the running game. But at the same time, also not realized so heavily on it. I thought that it showed a great deal of trust. I mentioned this before with Drew Locke. I think that with Clint Kubiak, he trusted Sam Garald. I just didn't see quite as creative of a play calling and route his time from Clint Kubiak at least in week one. Now, again, we have some recency bias here. Obviously, the Ceeox were victorious in this particular matchup. And they lost, you know, gets the 49ers. But I just thought that Seattle going up against equality, San Francisco defense, but not necessarily a dominant San Francisco defense played scared at times, tentatively in that week one loss to the 49ers. I didn't get the sense, even with Drew Locke on the field, that they were playing scared,

19:37kind of figuring things out again, but not necessarily playing scared. So again, I thought that Brian Flurry showed some confidence and some creativity in his play calling. Well, they both did one thing similar as well. They both got J.S.N. involved and he had a big week one for both of those guys. If there was any question, that certainly happened. Real quick, before we get to our next break, your thoughts on Jadarian prices debut? I'll tell you what's outstanding. And that's the thing is I just feel really confident in my evaluation of Jadarian price and his fit in this wide zone offense. I just think that you can see the vision, you can see the burst, you can see the change of direction bouncing off of contact. This, to me, just feels like a hungry runner who is just waiting to be the guy. And now he's going to get that opportunity here with Seattle. If I had anything that I don't know if I would use to be critical of Brian Flurry, but question a little bit was just the fact that I thought that they should have run Jadarian price a little bit more. But of course, when you are struggling to string together a long drive,

20:41that's going to be difficult to get those opportunities. But I thought that Jadarian price proved that he is every bit the big play talent that Seattle invested their first round selection to become. So decisive too for a first time out, not having a lot of reps in college. How, how quickly makes those decisions on where to go with the football really, really impressive? All the questions coming into this one, the secondary Rodney Thomas ends up getting the start over AJ Finley, who was actually added to the 53 man roster. Neymai Aprichet plays the entire game in outside corner. We got some answers there. We got Spoon in the slot a lot with Joban Pritchett on the outside. They were phenomenal last night. What can you say about that secondary? Well, you just used the word I was going to use phenomenal. I mean, I just, I don't know. That's all right. Great minus the delight kind of a thing. I guess here. I just, my expectations were high for these players.

23:49I've been a fan of all of them for a while now, but I just thought, okay, gentlemen, here is your opportunity. You're never going to get a brighter stage than this. And here you go. Let's see what you can do. It wasn't just the interceptions. It was the clean open field tackling that I thought really was an impressive part of the game. I had an opportunity to kind of rewatch the game with the coaches film and just be able to kind of track these corners. And their ability to just stay hip to hip with the receivers. Drake May didn't have very many open receivers. The one exception, of course, being the big pass interference call against Josh Jo, where he actually, I mean, that's what you'd rather him do is basically just kind of hit the guy, get the PI and give your defense another opportunity. Obviously, the Patriots were able to get the touchdown. You don't want to get beat in the first place, but other than that one play, I mean, I just didn't see a lot of guys who were wide, wide open. And when they were open, the C-OX defenders closed quickly.

24:52So the interceptions, of course, are going to get all the attention as they should. Loved the play in particular from obviously the winner from Joe, but the knee in my picture in particular, his interception to me was just a spectacular play. Just because you saw Rodney Thomas tip the ball up, he used all of that six foot two heights. I mean, he caught the ball. He tipped the ball at its highest point, jumping over a guiding Romeo doves that has that height and that leaping ability and ball skills normally, at least, was a heck of a play. And then for knee in my picture to make that kind of dancing juggling interception in the in zone, that to me was ultimately the play that completely changed the momentum of this football game. You know, fans sometimes have a hard time embracing a player or believing in a player if they just haven't seen it a lot for themselves. Despite the coaches talking up a player and they've done nothing but seeing them seeing the praises of knee in my approach it over the last couple of years under Mike McDonald Carl Scott and that coaching staff. We saw it flashes last year. We'll

25:55never forget the great pass break up against Marvin Harrison in the end zone against Arizona. And then there were questions about his run defense. It's so much fun to watch a young player like this get better and better every year. Certainly doesn't look like a liability in run defense now. And he looks like a legitimate starter. He really does. And that to me is one of the most exciting developments of Wednesday night's performance. That would have been obviously something that the C.O.X. clearly were concerned about and considering the fact that they bring in tribont digs, they sign Terry Arnold as well. You make the three draft picks at the cornerback spots. You make the trade of course with the chargers for Avery Smith. You do all these different things that suggest that maybe they don't really believe in me in my project. And when he had his opportunity down he flourished. And so that to me obviously the victory is great. You feel wonderful for Drew Locke and some of the other players. But I was excited for me in my

26:56purchase as I was for any other player on C.O.X. roster. And Job too. I mean there were some questions people had about he's going to play full time now. He's not rotating with Reek anymore. He gets the big contract that comes with more expectations. Just a spectacular play to close it out. That is not an easy interception to make and then to get the body control control the ball. Get his feet down. Unbelievable. I let me ask you this and this this might be go ahead run. Well I was going to say no we were kind of joking before we started the other show. I mean there's almost like Richard Sherman play of course. We got crab tree. Obviously there was a lot more riding on that particular game but just the way we're thought to get your feet in bounds. And again using your length just recognizing where you were on the field. Those are some of the things that when the play is happening that quickly it's so easy to just focus on the ball and catch it but not get your feet

27:58in bounds basically. To first grabs the ball completely change it repositioned where he had the ball so that couldn't get ripped away from a big talent to receive her there and then get his feet in bounds again. I mean all those should like receiver skills and that is something that Josh some have kind of question whether he had those type of ball skills and so I was really excited to see him make that what so glad I got to hear your perspective on this game as we break it all down next week we'll be back to look ahead to the Cardinals game in Arizona week two.
