Rathlin Island Eradicates Feral Ferrets, Seabird Population Soars

0:00On March 23rd, Wrathlin Island off Northern Ireland's North Coast just marked a world first in conservation. Teens have wiped out all feral ferrets from this inhabited spot, safeguarding its massive seabird colony of more than 250,000 birds. Each year. These include puffins, razor-bills, gillamots, and rare corn crakes that no longer nest anywhere else in the region. The ferrets arrived in the 1980s and turned into a nightmare for the birds, snatching eggs, chicks, and even adults. One fair alone wiped out up to 27 puffins in just two days. The island's roughly 150 residents also dealt with the rays on their chicken coops. The LifeRaf project, led by the RSPB with strong local backing, kicked off in 2021. It took 30 staff and 60 volunteers using traps, thermal drones, cameras, and a detection dog named Woody. They worked through harsh autumn and winter weather to avoid bothering the breeding birds. Early winds are already showing.
