Rams Eye Veteran QBs for Stafford Backup

About this episode

The Los Angeles Rams are seeking a seasoned backup quarterback for Matthew Stafford, with Jimmy Garoppolo and Kirk Cousins topping their list. Garoppolo, a free agent, impressed in his brief stint with the Rams last season, while Cousins, a former Washington teammate of head coach Sean McVay, brings extensive experience despite recent injuries. The Rams may also consider drafting a young quarterback, but McVay prioritizes an experienced presence in the quarterback room for immediate stability.

On March 30, the Los Angeles Rams still need a solid backup quarterback for Matthew Stafford, who's coming back for his 18th season in 20. 26. Jimmy Garoppolo is a free agent after his one-year deal ended, and Stetson Bennett isn't ready to step up as the number two guy. At the league meeting in Phoenix this week, head coach Sean McVeigh made it clear their targeting veterans with Garoppolo as the top choice for A. Reunion and Kurt Cousins as a strong backup plan. Cousins got released by the Atlanta Falcons this off season. McVeigh goes way back with Cousins from their Washington days between 2012 and 2016, when he was his offensive coordinator. Both guys are in their mid-30s. Cousins at 37, Garoppolo at 34, was some recent injuries limiting their starts. But McVeigh still, rates them high. Garoppolo only played four games over two years with the Rams, shining in one start at the end of last season. Cousins had eight starts for Atlanta, throwing for over 1700 yards, but mobility isn't his

strength anymore, just like Stafford. Rams could draft a young arm in April to groom long-term, yet McVeigh's pushing hard for that experienced hand in the quarterback room right now to keep things steady.
