Raiders Release Geno Smith, Eye Heisman Winner Mendoza

They plan to release him ahead of the new NFL year next week, unless a trade happens first. This comes as the team holds the number one overall pick in the upcoming draft, following a disappointing year. Smith threw for 3,025 yards in 19 touchdowns, but he led the league with 17 interceptions. The Raiders finished 3 and 14, locking in that top draft spot. His exit will free up $8 million in salary cap space, though they will eat $18.5 million in dead money. Smith has had a rollercoaster career. Drafted in the second round by the New York Jets back in 2013, he bounced around as a backup with several teams before breaking out.
