Psalm Chapter 33

Psalm 33: The Song the Universe Already Knows

"Sing unto him a new song," the psalmist commands, and then proceeds to tell us why: "He spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast." There it is — the staggering claim that the entire universe is a spoken thing, a word made solid. The heavens, the seas gathered into storehouses like wine into barrels, the whole spinning cosmos held together by nothing more and nothing less than a voice. And against this backdrop, the psalmist sets the ambitions of nations and kings, and the contrast is almost comical. "There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength. An horse is a vain thing for safety." All the machinery of human power — the armies, the warhorses, the strategies — amount to nothing beside the God who fashions every heart and considers every work. But the psalm does not leave us cowering before omnipotence. It draws us in. The eye of the Lord, we are told, is not upon the powerful but upon "them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy." The God who spoke galaxies into existence is watching, with something very like tenderness, for those who are simply waiting for him.
