Psalm 15: The Character of the Guest

The psalm opens with the most piercing of all social questions: who gets in? "Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill?" And the answer is not what the religious professional might expect — no mention of sacrifices offered, tithes paid, or feast days kept. Instead, God describes a character. Someone who walks uprightly and speaks truth in his heart — not merely with his lips, where truth is cheaper, but in the hidden interior where no one audits the books. Someone who does not backbite, who honors those who fear the Lord even when it costs him nothing to ignore them, and who swears to his own hurt and does not change. That last detail is the one that catches: a person who makes a promise that turns out to be expensive and pays it anyway. This is not a portrait of perfection but of integrity — the kind of person whose yes means yes even when the market shifts. "He that doeth these things," the psalm concludes with magnificent simplicity, "shall never be moved."
