Psalm 140: The Serpent's Tongue and the Shelter of God

David knew a particular kind of enemy — not the one who charges at you with a sword, but the one who sharpens his tongue like a serpent and hides poison under his lips. There is something almost clinical about the observation: the wicked do not merely speak badly, they engineer destruction with words. Snares, cords, nets, gins — the vocabulary is all entrapment, the patient architecture of malice. And against this David sets not his own cleverness but a bare, unadorned cry: "I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God." That is the whole defense. Not strategy, not counter-scheming, but the declaration of belonging. What follows is a prayer that the violent be caught in their own devices — that burning coals fall, that the pit they dug become their home. It sounds harsh until you have been the one in the net. And then the psalm lands, with a certainty that feels hard-won rather than naive: "I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted." Not hope, not wish — know. The upright, David says, shall dwell in God's presence, and after everything this psalm has described, that sounds less like a theology and more like a refuge.
