Psalm 139: The Inescapable Attention

Most of us, if we are honest, live with a quiet dread of being fully known. We curate, we edit, we present the version we can bear to have seen. And then David writes this psalm, and the whole project collapses. "Thou hast searched me, and known me" — not merely observed, but searched, the way one searches a house for something hidden. God knows the sitting down and the rising up, the word before it reaches the tongue, the thought before it has fully formed. And David's response is not terror but wonder: "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me." The flight fantasy that follows — heaven, hell, the wings of the morning, the uttermost parts of the sea — is not a plan of escape but a meditation on its impossibility, and what astonishes is that David seems relieved by this. The God from whom there is no hiding is also the God who knit him together in the womb, who saw his unformed substance, who counts thoughts more numerous than sand. To be fully known by such a God is not exposure. It is, at last, to be home. And so the psalm ends where it must: "Search me, O God." The man who cannot escape God's gaze invites it deeper still.
