Psalm 137: The Harps We Hung in Silence

Grief has a geography. The exiles did not merely feel sad — they sat down by the rivers of Babylon and wept. The body participates in sorrow; it finds a place and stays there. And when their captors, with that peculiar cruelty that mistakes entertainment for consolation, demanded a song, the exiles asked the only honest question left to them: "How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?" It is not that they had forgotten the music. It is that the music belonged to a place, and the place was gone. To sing it here, for these people, would have been a kind of profanation — like wearing a wedding ring to amuse a thief. So they hung their harps on the willows, and their silence became its own fierce act of loyalty. The psalm ends in violence that disturbs us, and rightly so. But before we rush to explain it away, we might pause and ask: have we ever loved anything enough to be this angry at its destruction? Not every prayer is beautiful. Some prayers are simply the truth, spoken raw.
