Psalm Chapter 132 - A Song of degrees

About this episode

Psalm 132: The Restless King and the Resting God

David could not sleep. That is the beating heart of Psalm 132 — a man so consumed with finding a dwelling place for God that he swore off the comfort of his own bed until the task was done. "I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids, until I find out a place for the Lord." It is a magnificent, almost reckless vow, and the psalm honors it. But then something extraordinary happens: the psalm pivots from David's restlessness to God's rest. "This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it." The Almighty, who needs no house and fills all heaven and earth, chooses to rest in Zion — not because He must, but because He desires to. David searched for a place for God; God, it turns out, had already chosen the place and was simply waiting for someone to care enough to look. The priests are clothed with salvation, the saints shout for joy, the poor are satisfied with bread, and over it all, a lamp is ordained for the anointed — a small, steady flame that nothing can extinguish. His crown shall flourish. It is one of the few psalms that ends by looking forward into a future so bright it casts no shadow.
