About this episode
Psalm 127: The Gift of Sleep
We are a civilization of builders and watchers — rising early, sitting up late, eating the bread of anxious toil, convinced that if we stop, everything will collapse. Psalm 127 walks calmly into the middle of all that frantic effort and says the most offensive thing imaginable: it is vain. Not because building is wrong or watching is foolish, but because "except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it." The work is real, but the results belong to someone else. And then comes that devastating, tender line — one of the most beautiful in all the Psalms — "for so he giveth his beloved sleep." Not as a reward for finishing the task, but as a gift that replaces the task. While you were straining and scheming, God was building. And the proof? Children. Arrows in the hand of a mighty man. Not possessions to be managed but forces to be launched. The psalm for Solomon begins with the futility of human ambition and ends with a quiver full of life. The builder who lets God build discovers that the house was always larger than his blueprints.
