Psalm 126: The Dream That Was Real

There is a joy so sudden and so complete that it does not feel like waking up — it feels like falling deeper into a dream. "When the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream." The exiles had prayed for this. They had wept for it, perhaps for decades. And when it came, it was so much larger than what they had imagined that their own mouths surprised them — filled, the psalmist says, with laughter and singing. Even the watching nations could see it: "The Lord hath done great things for them." And the people of God, still blinking in the impossible sunlight of answered prayer, could only echo back: "The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad." But the psalm does not end in celebration. It pivots to a plea and then to a promise — that those who sow in tears shall reap in joy, that the weeping farmer bearing his handful of seed will come home carrying sheaves. The harvest is not despite the tears; it grows from them.
