I review the criteria for such a disorder, revealing that among the 8 distinguishing symptoms are a list of extremely understandable and relatable feelings that people experience when dealing with bereavement and loss of a loved one, especially that of a child or spouse. But the psychiatric institution has declared that if it takes you over a year for these feelings to persist, you are pathologically mentally ill. As mental health professionals join alongside the grievers to protest this new insertion into the heinous DSM bible, as a society we need to rethink what meaning we give pain and have the courage to rise above the politics of big pharma.
