Private Prison Chaos: Assaults, Drug Busts, and Calls for Public Control

Last week, three officers were attacked at the facility on Curry Street in South Australia, with two briefly hospitalized, but soon back on duty. Earlier this year in late January, an inmate transferred from there to another prison was caught with 10 grams of cocaine valued at $3,000. The Public Service Association, representing the officers, blames chronic understaffing under Circo's management since privatization in 2019. They call it the tip of the iceberg and urge the next government to bring the center back under public control before Circo's contract expires in June, 2026. Meanwhile, correctional services minister Rianne and Purse insist staffing levels are adequate and highlights recent investments like 6.8 million dollars for advanced scanners and cameras.
