Does it really wow? Like, you know, it's impressive, you know? What is it that makes him like, I guess it's just natural? I don't know. I just like, how do you explain that? Yeah, I mean, I don't know scenarios that he chooses to practice doing that, whether it's a home in a mirror or something, you know what I mean? I don't know how he visualizes, but he just gets it done, you know? What we do that first drive in the second half, when they drive all the way down the field, you have that past deflection in the end zone. Yeah. What's kind of going through your head? I know you want to limit him to three if anything. Yeah. Are you limited to zero instead? Yeah, well, just tendencies going throughout the week, being prepared. I kind of had a good feeling, you know, being a work on a field, I kind of figured he was going to pick on me, so I was high alert all week. Do you know the last time that the Cardinals as an organization did not allow a touchdown in three straight home games? No, I didn't even know that's crazy. I feel like, man, that's just piece to the leaders that we have in our defense room, they really take this game serious, and I really appreciate that.
That was 1926, that was the last time that the Cardinals had an outlaw. We got some cooking out here, man. I was just playing ball, man, it's kind of crazy, because games like this, when you just leave the field, you're just like, wow, man, we're just playing ball, so I can't even walk you through the play-by-play, man. I was, you know, locked in the other guys playing on me today, and I don't want to be the weakest league, man. JT was down, and me coming in, there should be no drop-off, and it wasn't, so. I couldn't stop smiling in the locker room earlier, and I found out, so it's just a real moment, man, and my other guys got me ready for this moment, so that's off to them. You have to meet your teammates, but as you guys are playing right now. I bring violence to the game, and they bring it with me, man, so. I told my group before we went out to the day, we're seeing red all day today, and that's what we did, man. We had a great game today. It feels so good, man, I'm not going to lie, it feels amazing.
Man, just the preparation we put in throughout the way we practice, the way we take care of our bodies, the way that we meet, the way we communicate, man. It's like there's one heartbeat out there, man. That's how it should be every week. Is it preparation that pre-game meal you made? I did have my spaghetti today, too, yeah. I told you I got to have every game, man, and I don't feel the same. It's like rabbit fuel, man, so it's preparation, man. The superstitions, man, the people having for the game, it's a mental thing. In a day's ball, ball's always going to be ball, so. So real quick, can you just take a sip of what is it against the pre-game meal? I get the spaghetti. They ain't had a pepper flakes for the pomegranate, so I just had ranch today, yeah. Forgetting and ranch, man. They'd be saying it's nasty, but I think it's good. You're convinced the teammates could try that? So I don't think everybody knows it, but somebody did ask, I recommend you. But you can't put too much ranch or too little ranch. You've got to have a good proportion on it. Yeah. So ranch on pizza. Oh, ranch on everything. Ranch on everything. If I'm at the house, I'm putting ranch on my steak. I can't do that steak house, but if I'm at the house, I'm doing it, yeah.
Yeah. It's like catching fire. I would say that it doesn't take you long to realize in this league that you're always going to compete. Going to be competing, no matter what you're doing. It takes me back to my career at Ohio State, where I was one of the lowest recruited compared to all those five stars coming in and finding a way to go out there and start. And it just carries over. It's just the name of the game. That's football, so. It does make you, it does make you, you know, open your eyes and realize that what you're doing is always going to be, you know, at a high emphasis knowing that there's always people that's going to be coming in and trying to do what you did in the past. So I'm looking forward to it. And like I said, I mean, we're just all excited to go out there and compete. Okay, well, anyway, the fact that the way that this defense has additions on every level,
talk about chasing the people to the line and the traffic there, you guys have willing to second level and then the third level, who they go on with Sean and most of them. How much pressure is on this defense to perform to the higher level of respect and should be the most important. Right, I would say that last year was, you know, we excelled in certain things, but we're also trying to get back to where we were in the past. So we got some great additions and we're excited for that. Ultimately, it's to use some of these guys to be the number one defense in the league. And that's always going to be the goal. So whatever we can do to utilize all the different talent that we have on this team to be the best and play as a team and to build the best chemistry that we got, that's what we're going to do. We stand down about this offense. Just early, this early in the game, we stand down about these things. Yeah, we're not used to going against the normal offense I have been the past three years.
It's been a lot more moving, moving pieces definitely have to use your eyes pretty well because if not, then somebody's going to be open. But I like what they're doing. I'm very excited for it. I just know it's making our defense a little bit better because we're having to do different things, not just the normal offense we've been used to. I was going to say just because every other team has some variations that they were going to miss. Is that kind of, do you think that kind of benefit you because you've seen that more than first of all? I would say so. I mean, as the league has changed over time, I think they revert to certain offenses that do well in certain systems. I would say we're taking maybe a little bit pieces from other offense that we see to do well. I like what we're doing. I don't know as much as some of these quarterbacks that we have on the team, some of the offensive players, but I just know it's tough to go against. I'm lowest at number last year, but still one of the top teams scored in the defense. What do you guys really need to do to finish getting after the quarterback?
Yeah, I would just say place heavy emphasis in practice. It's always going to start in practice with getting after the quarterback, not touching him in practice, but making some good moves. I would just say rush more. I mean, there's so much that goes into it. It goes with the coverage. Everybody works together. I would say that we had great numbers, but we are trying to get that number up, but the ultimate goal is always going to be the ball. Getting the ball taken away, getting off the field. We're putting our offense out there on the field, and we're staying off. That means that we're doing a good job. You already asked about it for my competition standpoint. Before my collective standpoint, we're having new wins tomorrow. We're having a good field. What kind of a cheerio can that do for a defense? I think that guys' limit with this group, I do believe we have one of the most talented linebacker core groups in the league. So just excited what we're going to be able to do out there on the field. I think we all compliment each other super well. Bigger guys that are explosive.
So I'm excited for it. Thank you, Manny. It's a desire that can be addicted for people. I fell into that, you know, a younger age, but super bad. That's not what I am. Did you say it again? I watched the lab last episode of Landman on the plane. I downloaded it to the picture. I don't know that his wife seems to have my phone. I don't know how he handles it. It's a good show. The field seems to be coming on the camera. There's been no rights. I'm excited to see how it goes. What did you think of the cheerio? Oh, I thought he did a good job. I was surprised. Honestly, he seemed like he knew what he was doing. He was cool. So if you put it in question, you say you pay your mom a salary. You just wait it all. Just mom will get a pay raise or...
I don't know what to talk about that. Just have a meeting or something. Pick a cheek. I'll figure it out. Everybody seems to have a good friend. He's not a good friend. How much is your relationship with the family? I'm not talking about the relationship. I'm not talking about the relationship. Yeah, well, first of all, I think I'd be doing this service to my teammates. You know, me even think about what's next. What's right in front of us isn't over yet. That's another thing I got to tell me. So much grew as just being president in every single room that I'm in. Not looking too far ahead because I'm tripping what's right in front of me. That's too self-reaching for me to even be thinking about what's next. Are you at least aware that you're doing a lot of speculation out there that people are going to throw huge numbers of you going forward all the season?
Right now, I'm just not worried about all that stuff. People can say all they want to say, but I'm just focused on. Focus on Friday. Nervous? I mean, I still get nervous for sure, but I just don't think. I think I do a good job of just understanding that. At that moment, whatever moment it is that I'm nervous about, it doesn't define who I am as a person. It doesn't define who I am as God's eyes. And understanding and knowing that has just kind of put this forceful of peace around me that I think gave it allows me to be able to be calm in certain situations. But it doesn't. That's not good. What makes you nervous? I mean, I just love the game so much. And if you don't get nervous or a little bit of burden, I don't think you have that same love.
I mean, I've got butterflies since going into football instance. Oh, it's, you know, five, six years old. So I don't want that feeling in this group anyway. I don't know. You know, football just doesn't mean as much as it did to me back then. I want to tell always that much. That didn't really work. I've been told. I think so. I think so. I'm going to have a steak. I'm going to have a steak. I'm going to play in as much. So I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt. So I can bring younger guys with me because I've been going. One of those younger guys, we're seeing it out here. It's the first time I scored all those last years. Well, I sure we all forgot about it because he was hurt. Now he's running, you know, almost a second man up behind you and tied. What have you seen? Well, it was a workhorse. He go stay quiet. He go and work hard. And that's what I love about him.
He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's going to get the job done. Do a job right. Rarely has any mistakes. So what would be a successful season? The National Championship. I ring when all the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't beat. And we just got to go show it. It's like, you guys expect the National Championship every year. This year, even more so, you guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like enough as a month. Does that keep feeling different? Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go bigger, go home, and we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the National Championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute. Right? You know what I mean? I mean, you were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have been one that came against them.
Does that tell you anything about like that? Hey, you guys want to win a National Championship. But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the National Championship. Last year, you were like, you're that close. So I'm saying, we just like work harder. That's kind of coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares. Just work harder. Like those, you know, we won't play Georgia. It's the same thing. Yeah. Last, last play, you know, they went on the win in 90. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, you know, it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year. And hopefully the outcome will change. And as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought I was working harder than you always find out there's a little more that you could have been doing. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could. But now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now.
So just to learn anything. If the stamina is a 16, then the answer to like, what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, it is a 75. 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny. But I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder in shape. It's been a fact. The idea of a potential to 16 is 17. I think I'm going to go that out there. I think I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody's like online, D line. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D line and the O line and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of that, I think we're going to have to do a lot of things. I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that next time. Yeah, I did.
Unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought like there are no moments you know, I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame, too, or North, those kind of games. Of course, I want to be because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I'm not in the game. I'm not going to be in the game. I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald is he got the key. You guys in a second here. Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal. You haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's grown right now. He has to work, I think. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 6th or you're 327, he's 326. Yeah, I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's just got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you, older guy. There's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well?
Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right during the off season. So they can play. And I just played, I want to like contribute, like make plays, tackle, and sex. It's still a lot of work to stretch. It seems like these guys get bigger. Each one of the freshmen class is looking bigger and bigger. Do those guys kind of, it doesn't kind of allow you in the cell? Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I'm really seeing much of some of the day too when I'm passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined. I would say that. And it looks like they're ready to work at me. How important is notes? It feels like, you know, there's a lot of great defenses that you have big, athletic defensive tactics who can eat up space, but also move, you know, right? That is that. Does that have an environment maybe for a great defense? To have guys like you that have some balls, but also have great feet?
I think that is definitely. I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners, like Team up North, they got two good, uh, detaco, two athletic detackels. Look at Georgia. Two athletic detackels. I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. Really, if you think about this, if there was a fight by the defense with actors, like, what's Georgia, Jordan Davis and Daniel Carter? Let's miss you again. It's Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions for you. You might as well be like, how, I mean, you understand it because you play it. But I feel like some time, I don't know, are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detackels. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving forward to 478s and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about those freakish out-line defense attacks, how do you think you fit into that old, that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me.
Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detackels, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch it do the drills. I have tapes here, you're like, you're looking at my, my film. So I think I'm up there with all those guys. Do you become like an artist who comes to the bad end of passes the figure wags and your things? When you're going to spring practice, you're not doing as much a 11 or 11. How do you work on that? Do you have like a goal, what mine? I don't remember how many I've last tried to, like, you haven't gone on mine. I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that, but I think they've counted. I think they've counted some of them and some of them were like just listed. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's, uh, goes big and, uh, what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter of the against. Any way you can is just great for the defense, you know, just that little thing covering his eye, you know, he might throw it. A little bit to the left to our player. So it's something that you really, really have to work on.
You can do that with what you can do. It's really, that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You can do that with your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that pass through the bad end. We don't have to ask this. We kind of kind of expect it for the second. I think I just have like a, like, an eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. I just try to get in his way and sometimes he just throws it to me. I don't know how your attitude to do it to the I have state quarterbacks get. I'm in a bad, dumb pass. I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. Yeah, a lot of, a lot of different backs, man, they just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs and get a ball right now. One, two, three. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey auto. He was injured this year. I like McCaffrey best back in this drive.
I lead out of the yard. That's y'all decision. Playing with Will Howard, what I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard man. He's just such a great lead, such a great leader, man. He's just like a moment where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold, man. He was just always calm and relaxed, man. And he just the leader that he was, man, that's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's, he's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people's man, he's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands. I was right before I got looking at the U of C spot and I was like, I'm the biggest news in L.A. And I'm just going to keep that up until the end of the same year.
Yeah, Coach, Coach Hartline, man, he's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well, you know, I'm just learning from him as well. You know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartline. And so he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think that would do really good. Straight away, you can't play off of it. That's what my strength is. Just intensity, man. And then, since he got the playoffs, every game, man, is like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and intensity keeps getting higher and higher. And so, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work. And just like Ohio State, you know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at your birth performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man. They did a really good job. The Bucking Nears, you know what I have in it. Temple, a nice, this is a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40, the broad and the vert. Yeah. Yeah, no, man. It's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well.
And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother, it's for the love of Will Howard, it's for the love of the receiver, so I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. I told Will, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit, you know. And so, I don't know if I gave up a sack, I'm not sure that. But I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother, it's the man, making sure the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you can work on right now when you need to? In my game. You can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe it's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so, that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better. I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year. And so, I just want to continue to build on that. Yes, I did.
Yes, I did. I didn't mean to look like LL, but I'm not in RL there. You're back in nursing. I didn't mean to look like LL. I did mean to look like LL. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera shoe. Yeah, man, I have a Camera great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. So, originally, you played with him on the knee. You did a lot of things. Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield. You know, a man and man coverage. You're getting on that line backer. And so.
Yeah, I say the man, the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man. And the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard. You know, even shoot, I don't know, every good, I think he had a, every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so, he's definitely, man, he's going to be a special player, man. He really is. I'm starting to read out some victories. I think it's a massive victory. When he looked back on it, what do you want to stand out for? Man, a lot of ups and downs, man. It's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm not having something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't, it's not too much. They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ.
And so, being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments, where it's tough, you know, where it's slow. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort. You know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? How do I have so much peace in this situation? And so, that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so, The fact that you're firm, you have the power of judgment, experience, that you're in. Which aspect can you do those other individuals that you want to follow and from being around power to heaven? Um, Man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. I might just really love their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quinchiam mentality, man. That boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know. You see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards.
And as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, still farming somebody, and she, that's a gain of 10. So, Do some of the things that he does, he just realizes two different guys. Yeah. Um, shoot, I think. Yeah, man, I think it just like, he's just gifted, man, too, beyond it. He's just gifted, you know, he's, he's a big back, you know, he's strong. And so, you know, he's, he's able to do, he's able to do those things. And so, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quinchiam. You know, I want to look at his game and it's like, man, where, where can I get better at as well? That's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. Julian Sand. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate. And so, um, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, um, continuing to grow as a leader, continuing to grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for our state. He's, I know just the quarterback position.
Um, I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to, um, ask Julian Sand as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead, um, and lead the offense and lead the team. Thanks, Julian. Thanks, Julian. Thank you. Thanks, Julian. Shoot, man, he has, he has a build like JK Dobbins. And, um, I kind of see them, you know, similar, similar, he's in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. Um, I feel like he's not talked about his none. Um, a lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is, is great. I remember, um, before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every, um, one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And, um, I feel like, you know, um, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see, um, James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same. And so, appreciate you all. Yeah, I'll be going. This.
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Well, I got coming in last year. I knew the role. So I just tacked Eric. They really the same way. It's taking advantage. Very rare. Physically, how different are you? Weight wise body wise on that from the year. Um, I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240. You know, like 244 right now. Last year, I played it like 236 to 37. What does it feel like 244 or a belt? You feel like almost a different machine out there.
Yeah. What does it feel like being run around out there like you are, but with more, uh, more bad. I just feel like I'm like, like, like, more downhill, like stronger. Like I'm taking all the bloods better. It's bigger. No. Is it daunting? Uh, maybe that's not the correct term. I'm just going to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year. And you played quite a bit last year and stuff. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? Is it going to get ready to just play 30 more snaps? So, but are you, are you, how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8th standpoint? Yeah. I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. I'm ready for it. The text is open. It's a rematch. So to speak, but it's not really two different teams. Compared to the last time you all played and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the, where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been, um, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming. So we know we got to do, we've been prepared for it.
I already just probably worked today. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman like he ended up here in the book. He studied in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy. Like he saw like a saw line to him. Or like you said, you're ready. I know you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready? So whatever the team needed for you? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Just whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly, mostly. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling this year than last year? That's possible. I asked that one more time. How different is that responsibility that you should be ready to just be emotional? Call that. If you were last year, you knew you were a role player.
I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility when me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. When I was a last year, I was intentional with everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Is somebody who's some reason ever seen you try to help you with this? And what word? That was a body word you watched. I say, describe my game. I say, when you think of me, you would think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet. I don't really know, but I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play a thing. You know what I want to body back? No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but. I'm not saying that the thing can be that sort of thing. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's it. How does that fit you? And what are you enjoying about it? The whole lane and that kind of stuff? I think it fit me because I don't know.
I just like the defense. I feel like we got, like you said, we got a lot of freedom. And we moving around a lot. A lot of the terms is like, you know, I don't know. I don't really know how to answer that. That's okay. You can go on your instincts a little bit more, maybe. And it's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on. But it's like, I just like his defense. I like how the three of the defense. I like what he got going on. What was it, sad when CJ left the ring? No, I wanted to say that. I was kind of like happy for him. Yeah, that's what you want. No, no. That's my dog. So yeah, kind of missing a little bit. But yeah, I'm happy for him though. Well, don't thank you. Go ahead one last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year. But maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship. You guys will win your own. How much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year? But we'll be in this bigger role and along some of your classmates.
Yeah, I do feel like, um, yeah, I do feel like I did win a national championship. But like you said, my role wasn't same as how it's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling with me be on the field. A lot more place. Great. Oh, Bell, thank you very much. Thanks. I've been using you, you know, that almost saved you role of stuff. How much is it grown that you could put your finger on? Yeah, I was growing immensely. I mean, Caleb, he makes a lot of checks. Latham makes a lot of checks. I listen to them. Whatever they need. If I need to cover somebody, I'll go cover anybody. If they need me to do run support, I'll do run support. And it's really what Caleb does. What we do and Latham. It just goes back to Coach G's preparation. And everyone's preparation to give us more flexibility. And it doesn't matter who's in those positions. And we can all play every position whether it's covering somebody or running or running and tackling. Did you feel like that was the case before the Oregon game? You're showing up, Sammy. Is that something that's been added to just, you know, rely on a little bit more.
Go ahead. Yeah, it did. I've probably been a broska game. Me getting more safety reps. And we had a five week to prepare. So I really learned the playbook a lot more. Even though I knew the playbook, I learned a lot more. And I learned a lot more. Like in-depth, you know, so really just after the Oregon game, it helped me a lot to go back to safety. Go to NICU everywhere. You guys had a lot of issues of giving up big plays in the passing game of the first game against Oregon. What do you feel you guys need to do better this time around to make sure that doesn't happen? Just the same mindset. We got to challenge these receivers. Every dog has their day. Maybe some people didn't have their day that game. But we'll look out there and hopefully change the narrative. And we still play with the same confidence, same technique. And, yeah. Bill Rebellion, what's the problem with this match? And Denzel obviously had a tough game. And that one. What have you seen from him and how he's responded?
Do you get a sense of, from him, how he's up to you for this rematch? Oh, yeah. He's super stoked for this rematch. His preparation has been very good. He's always been preparing. You know, it didn't go the way he wanted to go that game. But he just always had his confidence. And we're going to see a big game out of him this week. And, you know, I know you guys wanted to play them in anapolis. But the fact that you get to play them at the Rose Bowl, I mean, get a second chance. And people have said, you don't get that very often. How determined are you guys to take advantage of it? We're super, super determined. We watched film. I mean, we've lost a lot of film. The first time we played them, now we've got another six games that they played up film to watch. And it's just, they've grown a lot as a team. Same as us. We've grown a lot. We're not the same team. We were when we played them week one or weeks six or whatever. But now we're out there and going to play thighs, physical, and everything like that. All right, Jordan. We're going to jump to the, to assume a question here from Joey Kaufman.
What was this match? Oh, my bad. Not too Joey. Can't we T Robinson? The athletic. Hey, Jordan, you've moved around a lot in the second day in your career. And now kind of getting some many more safety reps. What is it like at this point when Walt or Coach Mills comes to you and asks you to do some else? And just how much can you lean on the experiences you've had moving around when you're trying to learn something new in the middle of the season? It means a lot. We always talk about when this is even being on selfish. Whether that's making plays or not making plays or doing your job so another person can make plays. That's kind of what we pride ourselves on. And it's just fun. Me moving around different positions. I'm always up for a new challenge. And a lot of people in the country can't do that. I just hold myself to that standard where I can play any position and excel at it. Okay. And anybody else needs a question? Let me know. But otherwise we can go to Austin more of the podcast.
Jordan, when you were talking about watching film Oregon, which one do you think is more valuable to you watching that against yourself? Seven games ago, even if you've changed or the ensuing six games for Oregon? Which one do you put more stock in? Kind of both. For me, I kind of watched what I did. Things I did well. Things I didn't do too well against them. And their team is changing, their scheme has changed. Some players have been out those stretch of games. So I really watched the past game we played. And I know they're going to go back to some of the stuff that they liked, of course. And different games like Penn State, maybe Illinois, they run a lot of men. So just watching, watching stuff like that. Every game matters. So yeah. Jordan, thank you very much. Thank you. I just wanted to get more experience under my belt. So I can bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot of things. One of those younger guys we're seeing out here. That's the first time I've heard all these last years. What have you seen from Lil?
Because I kind of felt like last year we all forgot about him because he was hurt. Now he's running almost a second man up behind you and Ty. What have you seen in the game? Well, there's a workhorse. He goes, stay quiet. You're going to work hard. And that's what I love about him. He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's going to get a job done. Do a job right. Rarely has any mistakes. What would be a successful season? A national championship? A ring. When all the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't be beat. We just got to go show it. That mindset different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year. This year even more so. You guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like that. Is that the case? Is that the case? You can feel the difference or is there not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go bigger going home and we're not trying to go home. It's finished big.
We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute. Right? You know what I mean? You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that? Hey, you guys want to win a national championship. But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year. Like you're that close. So I'm saying we just like work harder. That's kind of coach makes a saying. You know, nobody cares. Just work harder. Like those, you know, we'll play Georgia. It's the same thing. Yeah. Last, last play. You know, they went on the win in 90. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year. And hopefully the outcome will change.
As you get older, you kind of learn. I thought that was working harder than you always find out there's a little more that you could have been doing. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought, freshman year I was working as hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. If the stamina is a 60, then the answer to what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder. Get the shape. It's been a pleasure. The idea of potentially the 60, 70s. I mean, side about that idea is there's a make you nervous about, can you last that long? You're worried. I think I'll go that out there. I think I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again.
That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody's like, oh, line, D line. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D line and the O line and everywhere else so we can last that long. Speaking of the light game, I was just, if you like playing that many snaps again last year, I don't know if any of us were really expected to be playing that many snaps. Ah, yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought like there are no moments you know, I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame too or North, those kind of games. Of course I want to be in because I know I can contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald is he got it? You guys in a second? Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal. You haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has to work at the, he just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 6th or you're 327, he's 326.
Yeah, he's a very old guy. I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's just got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you, older guys, there's that large group of young guys and then there's these seniors in your back. Is that part of your cast for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right, burn the off season so they can play. And I just played, I want to like contribute, like make plays, tackle the sex. It seems like these guys get bigger. Each one of the freshmen class is a bigger player. And those guys kind of, it doesn't kind of allow you to solve the first. Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of some of the day too when I'm passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined. I just say that. And it looks like they're ready to work at me. How important is this?
It feels like there's a lot of great defense that you have big athletic defensive tactics who can eat up space, but also move, you know, right? That is that. Is that an inquire maybe for a great defense to have guys like you that have some balls, but also a great team? I think that is definitely, I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners, Team of North, they didn't know they got two good, uh, detaco, two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacles. I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on a big run and beat those big teams. Really, if you think about this, they won't define why the defense attack is like, what's Georgia, Jordan Davis and Daniel Carter? Let's miss you again. It's Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions for you. It is funny how, I mean, you understand it because you play it. But I feel like some time I don't know, are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles.
Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four seven eights and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about this freakish attack, how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch the dude do the drills. I have Tate here, you're like, you're looking like my film. So I think I'm up there with all those. Do you become like an artist who comes to the bad guy and passes the figure away? I mean, you're going to spring practice. You're not doing as much a 11 or 11. That's strong. How do you work on that? Do you have like an old one, Martin? I don't remember how many that last trip, like you have a gold one, 35. How many do you want to have? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that, but I think they're counseling. I think they're counseling some of them and it's some of them where I like just missed it. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand.
I think that's goes big and what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter of that is. Any way you can is just great for the defense, you know, just that little thing you cover in his eye, you know, he might throw it. A little bit to the left to our player. So, it's something that you really, really have to work on. It's really, that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You've come to your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that pass through the bad guy. We don't have to ask for this style. We kind of kind of expected for that. I think I just have like an eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. I just try to get in his way and sometimes he just throws it to me. I don't know. I'm here at TG. Do you want to be a high state quarterback? I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. Yeah. That's a lot of, a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs and you got to go right now. Oh.
I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Auto, he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. Who's the best back in this drive? Best back in this drive. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all decision. Playing well with Howard. When I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard, man. He's just such a great lead, such a great leader, man. He's just like a moment where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold, man. He was just always calm and relaxed, man. And he just the leader that he was, man. That's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's, he's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people's man, he's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man.
He's mature. And so man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands. I was right there, like I'm looking at the UFC spot. But I'm just having a nice new personality and a good coach. I'll keep that up until they get the same hair. Yeah. Coach, Coach Hartlund, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well. You know, I'm just learning from him as well. You know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartlund. And so he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think that would do really good. Straight away, you got to wait for the playoffs. I don't know what my strengths are. Just the intensity, man. And the intensity of the playoffs. Every game, man. It's like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and intensity, it keeps getting higher and higher. And so, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it. You know, each and every day and come in and work.
You just like Ohio State. You know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before then. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them. You know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida. And I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at your birth performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in. And the way they went about training us, man, they did a really good job. And you have a lot of players who are in the same team. The Bucking Nears, no, I haven't. We think of the City Tampa. Tampa, Tampa, nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and avert.
You've been on the races. It's an awesome locker. You need to be here with your mentality of like when you've got a linebacker, so you're going to be a bit of a cab. You're bigger than you when you're in the race. Yeah. Yeah, no, man. It's really all about technique. And then it's about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. It's, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit. You know, and so I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that. But I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brothers, though, man, making sure that the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You know, you had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you've been working on right now in my game? You can't really work on this, you know, in all season.
I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe. It's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better. I feel like I did a good job of that in my senior year. And so I just want to continue to build on that. So you know what I'm saying? Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So people say you look like now that it's far out there. You get back in nursing. I can mail them to you tomorrow. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera shoe. Yep, man. I'll come back great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. Yeah. Inside zone from stack. Being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield.
And man, man, coverage. You're getting on that line backer. And so. Yeah, I say the man. The biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man. And the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard. You know, even shoot. I don't know. Every game was a good game for him, man. But still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely, man. He's going to be a special player, man. He really is. I'm starting to get into some injuries. I think it's a match that's in there. When he looked back on it, what the stand-top looked like. Man, a lot of ups and downs, man. It's just how you respond to adversity.
And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm not having something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity. I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't. It's not too much. They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, you know, his moments, where it's tough, you know, where it's slow. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort, you know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so... The back of the firm, of Peterson Power and Judges, is through our back of Peterson Power. Which aspect, of each of those other individuals, of humor, to follow and being around power and strength?
Um, man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. I just really love their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham mentality, man. That boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know. You see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And as soon as you know it, you know, he, the running through somebody, stiff arm, and somebody, and shoot, it's a game to 10. And so... You some of the things he does, he just realizes two different guys. Yeah. Shoot, I think... Yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, to be honest. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong, and so, you know, he's able to do those things. And so, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game, and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quincham. You know, I want to look at his game, and it's like, man, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player.
What's your last one to treat? Julian Sand. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so accurate, and so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, container grow as a leader, container grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for a high state. I know just the quarterback position. I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask Julian Sand as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead the offense and lead the team. Thanks, Julian. Thanks, Julian. Shoot, man. He has a build like JK Dobbins. And I kind of see them, you know, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his none. A lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is great. I remember before I recruited, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every one of his years here, like,
four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same. Appreciate you all. You have to go. This. This.
This.
Look at this. Ball out. Got coming last. I knew. I just tack every day really the same way. ана Benzary. Basically different. Are you weight wise body wise on that? I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240. Yeah. I'm like 244 right now. Last year, I played it like 236th to 276th. What does it feel like? 244? I feel like an almost a different machine out there? What does it feel like to be running around out there like you are, but with more, more back. I just feel like I'm like, like, like more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all the blocks better. It's big. Is it don't think, uh, maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year and stuff. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? This is going to get ready to just play 30 more snaps. So, but are you, are you, how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an
eight-stand point? Yeah. I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My, I'm ready for it. The text is open. It's a rematch and so to say, but it's not really two different teams compared to the last time you all played and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the, where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been, um, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming, so we know we got to do, we've been preparing for it. Um, I think Riley ready to prepare right now. He, he advanced freshman like he in the, he in the book, he stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy. Like he saw like the saw line to him. Said you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready? The team needed. Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Which is whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing?
Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling. Um, asked a one more time. Um, I feel like it's a, uh, it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was attention over everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. It won't work. How's everybody working? Uh, I say. Scrabbing. Can I say that when you think of me, you would think of like a, like a bully, like a silver bullet. I don't really a bully.
I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play a thing. You know, I ain't got to be my nickname, but. So I'm saying that the, oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's it. Um, think of fit me because. I don't know. I just like the defense. I feel like we got, like you said, we got a lot of freedom and we moving around a lot, a lot of the terms is like, no, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's okay. Does it? You can go on your instincts a little bit more, maybe. And it's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like, I just like his deep. I like how the pressure deep is. I like what you got going on. What was it? Sad when CJ left. Uh, now I wanted to say that I was kind of like happy for me. Like, yeah, that's what you want. No, no.
All right. No, that's my dog. So yeah, kind of missing a little bit, but yeah, I'm happy for him. Well, don't think go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for. I know that wasn't maybe your national championship. You guys will win your own. Yeah. How much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like, um, yeah, I do feel like I did win a national, but like you said, my role wasn't same as how's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling maybe on the field. A lot more place. That's it. Great. Oh, Bill, thank you very much. Sometimes like basketball, I want to be on that just like the fed, but you know, you got to stay in some box. Yeah. Oh, that's a great question. I mean, I don't think I feel like these two can answer that for the beer right now.
I think KJ here. I can answer that. Well, I don't know what to say about that. What do you guys think? Well, I don't know. I don't know what to say about that. What do you guys think? Well, I don't know. I don't know. I go against every day. You know, this man is strong. You know, I'm talking about like you get the basketball field. You know, you can't just do what this man, you can't just have it really fast. Just the overhouse. He got the great guy. He doesn't give up on a play and like you said, he's going to go in and watch the film. He's doing it every day. He's going to better. He's going to see it on the field. But I'm not just one. So now, I'm not just nine. You can see the pool. And every game. Here, if you were to follow us around, I'll be in the pool. He's done like a coach, man. He's done like a coach. The chip Kelly's in for exchange. You were mine about maybe like the idea of tackle versus guard because obviously his offensive predilection was for like the offensive line play. We're in the as you can a part of the settling in the guard. That's um, I would say maybe I don't know, but I mean, when I'm pretty sure you got the job,
I was really excited because I'm one of those guys is the tempo. I can run with the tempo, you know what I mean? I'm playing basketball all life instead of football and I feel like just the fast pace often so we're running really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw a football at 65 yards, but can you kick a football 75 yards and go like a distance? No. I saw a question. Lincoln, what was your question? How is your um, your roommate, I could be. He's a blessing, man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. What's his name? His name's Lincoln. Keen Holtz. Oh, he's a cleaner. I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of picked each other's rumies because we're very clean and we don't like our rooms really messy. Well, it's true though. It's the truth. They broke pretty clean so. Luke, are you still a cross-training at TACO? Some or have you just been all guard this spring? Uh, so far I've been all guard. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking it practice by practice. I could end up being back at TACO. I could not, but you know, I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next one.
What do you mean? Yeah. Oh, that mean a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here. And it's been a dream just for being in Ohio kids. I'm from a Ohio kids perspective. I mean, that's the biggest switch possible. I would just, I would say that's, that'd be pretty cool. What was it like just last year at first game, getting one feeling for the first time? It didn't, like, this is gonna be a weird answer, but it can feel like I was playing a game yet. If that makes sense, I get it. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing. I just went in that first game. I was like, shoot out here now. It's time to roll. You know, it didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't hit me after, but my mom was like, what'd you feel there? And if like, getting out there at Indiana, I just like, honestly, I don't know. I felt less nervous. I didn't ice go in. It makes no sense. A lot. I mean, I'm learning from Josh Ann Austin. I think, prior to one of my biggest role models here, is my bigger brother, my first coach.
I'm up to deal. I don't understand. To deal, okay. Yeah, no. So, yeah, to deal with Austin, those are my guys, man. I mean, even Miles too. I mean, all three of them. Those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well. And I'm excited to see where they can get to. I'm excited to play on the field with them. Oh yeah, you know, it's been really helpful. You know, just keep in my mind, just settled and straightforward on the next play. It's a little far now. It's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to stay consistent in my work, I think. That's the biggest thing for me is just staying consistent and worrying about the next play. So, you got it from the guy you were in the play? Yeah. Wow, that's weird. Yeah, I mean, I guess they didn't want to get my nerves up, but like, I was ready. I mean, I did, I took most of the ones, that's all camping. I was already, I was pretty much it. Yeah. I wasn't really nervous to start the game. Yeah. What was his advice to you? Yeah. He said, you got it.
You mean, you're going against Tyleek and Kyle every day in practice, I mean, it's not different. Almost different. Are you now both to the end of it? Two starts end of it as a player, you know, having that under your belt? I'm more confident. I know what's going on. I can see like, I can see what's going on with the defense. I know what's going on. I know what's coming. I mean, I understand the game's a lot better than what it was. I don't say last year. Which adds up to what? Fast, start, me, etc. You play with that dust for a while. I mean, if we get out early, it's you get the defense change in place. It's like, change their defense. Start fast, I mean, they're trying to get the call in the play, but you start faster. I'm not going back. We're going to touch a lot of touchouts. Yeah, of course, Dave's pretty much said, though, you deserve to play. You know, in some form of fashion, what were you expecting this week? In terms of your role? Where they need me? If it's left right. Wherever I think it go in, I go in and go to do the front of me. How do you like playing tackle? Um, took me back to high school days,
but I should back in high school I wasn't really random all of what, really into the passes, but it was fun. Change got my, made my feet better, I would say. How confident you feel like you could play there if you need? If they want me there, I'll guess I'll play there. I mean, they need me, they need me. Also in the illness that swept through the office, the line room. A lot of times the coaches and players have said that that was still relying for the groom, you know, getting you experience among others. What was that like for you and double-dipping playing some tackle, playing some guard in the same practice? Um, it was based like a group effort, like for me, we knew we had guys out and we just had to go back practice. Um, all five guys, there's wherever they were playing, we just got to go. Even how much of that accelerate your development like that time with the ones you actually did? They really said, it did. I was jumped in there. I didn't really know. So we like one or two practices with practices, but like after those,
I was like, you're out of good. You know, my confidence grew. Yeah. It seemed like there was sort of a settling in process for you and the Akron game, maybe play got better if the game went on and it really seemed to, especially in the ground game, things seemed to take off. What was there a moment when it clicked on the field for you? Like was there nerves and then a time of settling in? I guess how, taking you through kind of that first game mentally? Yeah. First game, obviously you're going to have nerves for the first time in a sardor, but then like after the first couple of plays, meaning you have nerves naturally, so that's the first couple of play that I was good and I was just rolling. Also, there's a weird meme. I was trying to describe the player, but I was saying it was also the first start. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's, but like I prepared well and camp and practice all week and I was, I was ready. Yeah. I have two multi-year starters. I did a lot. I mean, I could ask them, hey, what we got here, but then I was prepared well.
I mean, I was telling Jimmy and said it's like, hey, we play our blocks. It's not the emotional side of it. What is it like to start a game? It was always my dream to come here and play and start and having that like, I mean, I just got to keep going and keep building those days and go to games and just keep building. What a much younger Austin, do you have people from you with that? No, not really. I don't think even I told my life mate, I asked my younger self, even committing, I wouldn't believe it that now having a couple of starts. Yeah. Awesome. Has this happened faster than you had in the middle of the game? I guess you're technically a soft one. Yeah. You play as a richer question. No, I knew that year two, I was going to see you some playing time. Now starting week one, year two, I didn't see that, but like I was ready in spring ball. Like I knew I was going, I was going to play some soft things.
But so. What does it mean to you to, it's not only get the opportunities to play, but like you play well enough now, and coaching staff trust you, you're being able to put it out there, whatever the situation is, but it's the earn that you're so early on in your career. I guess it shows like my preparation, my hard work, and just everything I've put into this, and I just finally show it up on the field. There are moments, the top season, the end of the spring, and the end of the season. I don't realize that you could play at this high level, with the ones, you know, 188. Yeah, but definitely was in training camp. I mean, it's like in highly can tie every day. So like it feels, it feels a lot of confidence, and doing it well, and not like getting balled or anything. So there's defensive tag wasn't that easy to miss. Hero in Jason Moore in Taiwan, all those guys, pretty much anyone on the deep in the morning, gets your face all the time. So, and Kay and Mack as well. Yeah. Yeah. We've heard a lot of them. I would work like the power of office ability, and the great thing about it.
How much can he help you? He helped me a lot, and I'm proud that he's our starting center, not someone else's, but I mean, he's like the captain of the line. He's another voice on the line, with guys like Josh Fryer and Josh Simmons, Donnie and Tiger. That means another voice and another captain on the look-ways of having and having this much experience helped during the pandemic. Yeah, a lot. He can tell you, like before the play was going on, how to block someone, like what you need to do, and it helps a lot. Tiger is talking about how calm he is going to start, you know, a little bit quickly. How much does that benefit him? Do you have a guy who's kind of been there and seen a lot of us? It makes us more calm, especially me and Dave, as our first start, so we were up here with Seth, like he brought us down, and we were like fine. Like our emotions weren't high, we settled in.
Is that like something he tells you? Is that something you can pick up on by how he's acting? How do you kind of mean sense what he's trying to do? By how he's acting, and what I mean, him, when we're on the side of him, both Josh and Donnie, like he was telling us, like, hey, we're cool, like we got it, but it's pretty much like, oh, everyone, oh cool group. I said, how much do the first time started? How much did the end best? Me a lot. And that was my first time ever using iPads. We didn't use the iPads in high school, but you can say, like, try to remember the defense, you can just come on a silent and bring them, we'll play and get help up really soon. Probably the first or second, but after that, I thought we'd say oh, instead of it. Great. Awesome. Thank you very much. But it seems like the training part is important, but it's not the whole thing. They're getting bigger and stronger. Yeah. It's like the culture part of the team. Yeah. And the talent is how much of the factory is that in a part of your team? It's also, it's a lot.
And I mean, I feel like you can't be able to transform your body, like I have, like people here come and do that without having that mentality part with it. It's like we always talk about competitions here, and our our culture is fight, so we're always here to compete. And I feel like that is just, that's what gets you in this mindset. When you talk about that transformation, can you just give us a little sense, maybe with numbers, or body fat, or like what you do in the weight group, how big is that transformation? I don't have really specific numbers, but it's more just like, I can just, I feel like, feeling when I'm playing. Like I remember how I felt the play when I just got here and now. I know how it feels to play like, like, just today. Like it feels physically different on my body. And it's like, it's, I'm getting used to it, that makes sense. Almost. You guys, I can't imagine feeling like that.
Kadea also said about you that you are just a completely different guy from last year. You're the one who's here, so let's get it done, yeah. So you're here. Do you feel like you weren't at that place mentally? I think I was, but I think I had some, I would say, like, kind of like confidence issues, like I was just, but, you know, I mean, I work past it and I know, I know, I know why I am, and I know I can be here. So, if you have confidence issues, how do you get through it? Is it yourself, is it teammates, is there someone in your family that makes you believe that you can do it? I know I can do it. It's not like that's those are all, it's on the past now. Did the past of play time and the very obvious opportunity, guys had to step up to be able to be able to be able to be able to do that help you, you know, over that confidence issue there, because it's now a memory of your opportunity. So, kind of is just like,
just, I mean, it's just, just being here, like I feel like being here every day, working with the guys every day, it's just like, you know, you become this person that you might not have, like, you might not have felt like you were before that, but like coming here, working every day, stacking these days, like, like, you know, I mean, I just feel like I, I realized who I am, I know what I can do now. I knew I knew I could play here. I mean, it's just, it was like the, like, I just, I don't know how to explain, I just, like, I've always known I could play here, it's just, I'm just, like, let's go, like, I'm ready, like, I'm ready to attack. Whether guys, the room helps you to figure that out, for sure, I think KJ was a big influence, tie Hamilton, tie league, they all, they all
helped me a bunch last year, kind of just pushing through, you know. All right, well, playing as much, so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt, so I can, you know, bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot. We all forgot about him because he was hurt. Now he's running, you know, almost a second man off the hook, you're tied. What have you seen during those games? Well, as a workhorse, he, he goes, stay quiet, he goes work hard, and that's what I love about him. He focuses, he don't really talk much. He's going, get the job done, do a job right. He rarely has any mistakes. What would be a successful season? A national championship? A ring? When? All the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't be beat, and we just got to go show it. I'm saying, that mindset different. Seems like you guys expect a national championship every year, this year even more so, you guys have all come back for this.
You guys have all decided like that, not as a lot of it. Because that is, is it's keeping people different, or is it not really any different? It's just the same for us. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder, we noticed our last run. Like we, most of us don't have any years after this, so we got to go, go bigger, go home, and we're not trying to go home. So it's finished big. We know what you guys think of Michigan, but when you look at what they did, they won the national championship, and you guys took them down to the final minute, right? You know what I mean? You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that, hey, you guys want to win a national championship, but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year, like you're that close. So I'm saying, we just like work harder. That's kind of a coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares, just work harder. Like those, you know, when we played Georgia, it's the same thing. Last play, you know, they went on the winning 90s, so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine.
How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Uh, of course, it's frustrating, but you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder, do things better than you did last year, and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought that was working harder than you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing? Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all, compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. If the stamina is a 16, then the answer is like, what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder. Get the shape. So, I, this, this time, do you have the heart? It's been a head, isn't it? The idea of potentially the 16 or 17 year old season.
How do you, uh, say about that idea, there's a make you nervous about, can you ask that long? Do you have worries? I think, I think we, I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play for the snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody in like, online, D-line, we got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D-line and the online and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Ah, yeah, I did, unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought like, there are no moments you know, I can go sit down or something, but we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame, too, or North, those kind of games. Of course, I want to be in, because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald, is he got the game? I mean, you guys are the second game. Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal.
Y'all, you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows it all the time. He's just, he's just, he's growing right now. He has a work ethic. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook, things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. It's listed. You're both listed at 630, you're 327, he's 326. Yeah, he's a very old guy. I kind of look at him like my junior, but, you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's just got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you older guys, there's that large group of young guys, and then there's these seniors in your back, is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right, during the all season, so they can play. And not just play, they want to like contribute, like make plays, tackle the sex. Let's stay down. I'll work this first. It seems like these guys get bigs. Each one of the freshmen class is a big, right? Do those guys kind of, it doesn't kind of why you're in the cell at the first?
Yeah, they definitely, some big dudes. And they all work hard. I'm only seeing much of some of the day too when I'm passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined. I'd say that. And it looks like they're ready to work at me. How important this notes feels like. There's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defensive tactics you can eat up space, but also move, you know, right? That is that. Is that an inquire maybe through great defense? To have guys like you that have some fault, but also a great seeker. I think that is definitely, I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners, like team of Northe, you know, they got two bit, detaco, two athletic detacles. You look at Georgia, two athletic detacles. I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run, and beat those big teams. Okay, if you think about this, if they want to find by the defense attackers, like what's Georgia, Jordan Davis and Jellie Carter? What's Michigan? It's Chris Jenkins.
Tell me more questions for you. You might as well have, I mean, you understand this because you play it, but I feel like some time I don't know, are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop more and more of these like freaky detacles. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four, seven, eight, and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about this freaky shot, how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch it through the drills. I have tapes here, you're like, you're living my film. So I think I'm up there with all those times. So Tyler, can you become like a artist and it comes in bad young passes? Think of ways, have your things. When you're going to spring practice, you're not doing as much a weapon on a weapon. I don't know. How do you work on that?
Do you have like a goal when you're in the mind? I don't remember how many you had last year. Like, you have a goal in mind? How many do you want to have? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that, but I think they've counted. I think they've counted some of them. And it's some of them where I like just missed it. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's, uh, goes big. And uh, what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter of that gets anywhere you can. It's just great for the defense, you know, just that little thing covering his eye, you know, he might throw it. A little bit to the left to our player. So, so it's something that you really, really have to work on. You can do that with what you can do. It's really, that's one of the things that you can maybe work on the most. You can do your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen, like, oh, that pastor just takes a minute and we don't have to ask for the stylist. We're kind of kind of expected for the physical. I think I just have like a, like, an eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. I just try to get in his way. And sometimes he's just those who take me. I don't know. I'm here at TvO, I have to be a high state quarterback. I'm here at the back dog passes.
I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. I've got you a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs. You got to go right now. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Auto, he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. I appreciate it. Best back in this drive. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all decision. Playing with Will Howard. When I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard man. He's just such a great lead, such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold, man, he was just always calm and relaxed, man.
And so, man, he's growing, you know, just as a person in as a player. And so, man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands. Yeah, Coach, Coach Hartline, man, he's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well, you know, I'm just learning from him as well. You know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartline. And so, he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so, I think they'll do really good. Just the intensity, man. And the intensity of the playoffs, every game, man,
is like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing, even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and the intensity, it keeps getting higher and higher. Yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State. You know, I definitely feel like Ohio State, they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I know I took a couple days off after the National Championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at your birth performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us,
man, they did a really good job. The bucket near, no, I haven't. Temple, temple, nice. This is a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40, the broad and the vert. Yeah. Yeah, no, man. It's really all about technique. And then it's about mindset as well. And so, on my say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I tell Will, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. It's, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit, you know. And so, I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that, but I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man,
making sure the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. I just feel later today. What is something you've been working on right now? In my game, you can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe. I was really just continuing to run through tackles. And so, that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better at it. I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year. And so, I just want to continue to build on that. So, you know what I did? Yes, I did. Yes, I did. I got a lot of water out there. You get back in person. I've been mad with you for a while. Uh, I did meet with New Orleans as well. Um, I never got that comparison. Actually, um, I know I have a Camera. Sure, yeah, man, I have a Camera great, great back, man. Um, just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth.
Yeah. Um, inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option route out of the backfield. You know, a man and man coverage. You're getting on that linebacker and so. Yeah, I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries. himself, man, in a way that man, um, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard, you know, um, even shoot. I don't know every good, I think he had a, every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely man. He's going to be a special player, man. He really is.
I know he's not going to do anything. He really worked back on it. But what's the standout? Man, a lot of ups and downs, man, it's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, um, not have something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to, you know, you can run to people, but they still can't, it's not too much. They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments where it's tough, you know, where it's slow. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, um, he gives you, he gives you that peace and comfort, you know, um, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't, you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still feel with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so,
Um, man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. Um, I just really love their mentality, especially, um, Q as well, you know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham mentality, man, um, that boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know, you see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And then as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, still forming somebody, and shoot, it's a game to 10. And so, shoot, I think, yeah, man, I think it just like, he's just gifted, man, to be honest, he's just gifted, you know, he's, he's a big back, you know, he's strong. And so, um, you know, he's, he's able to do, he's able to do those things. And so, um, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quincham, you know, I want to look at his game and it's like, man, where, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player.
Julian San, oh yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate. And so, um, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Day is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, um, container grow as a leader, container grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for our state. Uh, he's, I know just the quarterback position. Um, I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to, um, ask Julian San as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead, um, and lead the offense and lead the team. Thanks, thanks, thanks. Shoot, man, he has, he has a bill like JK Dobbins. And, um, I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. Um, I feel like he's not talked about his, no, um, a lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is, is great. I remember, um, before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every, um,
one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And, um, I feel like, you know, um, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see, um, James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same. And so, appreciate you all. Yeah, I'll be going.
Yeah. Oh, I got coming in last year. I knew the role. So I just tacked Eric Dave really the same way. Basically, basically, physically, physically, how different are you? Weight-wise? Body-wise on that from the year. Oh, I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240, I'm like 244 right now. Last year, I played it like 236, 237. What does it feel like at 244, or belt? You feel like almost a different machine out there. Yeah. What does it feel like to be running around out there like you are? But with more, more bands. I just feel like I'm like, like, like more downhill, like stronger. I'm taking all the blots better. It's a big knee. Is it daunting? Maybe that's not the correct term.
But to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year. And you played quite a bit last year and stuff. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? Just got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps. So. But are you? How would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-stand point? Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My I'm ready for it. The Texas opener. It's a rematch. But it's not really two different teams compared to the last time y'all played and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the current opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming. So we know we got to do. We've prepared for it. I already just probably worked today. I think Roblin ready to play right now. He advanced freshman. Like he ended up here in the book. He studied in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy. He saw it like the saw line too. Roblin, you said you're ready. Right? I know you're ready.
What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready for whatever the team needed from you? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Which is whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling this year as an last year? Because it's possible to have that. Asked one more time? How different is that responsibility? That should be the reason that it's the emotional thing called that. It was last year. You knew you were a homemaker. Oh, I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was intentional with everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Is somebody you, somebody you remember?
It won't work? How's everybody worked your way? Uh, I say, describe my game. I say, when you think of me, you would think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet. I don't really a bullet. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play a thing. What's your nickname? Do you really want to want to bodyguide that? No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but. So you know what I'm saying? I'm saying that the nickname to be that's what I'm saying. Oh, yeah, that's it. Yeah, yeah. You want to bodyguide that? Yeah, that's it. What was it? I got a couple more questions for Patricia's style and how it's free. I mean, how does that fit you? And what are you enjoying about playing in that kind of style? Oh, I think it fit me because I just like the defense. I feel like we got, like you said, we got a lot of freedom and we moving around a lot of the terms is like, no, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's OK. Does it really? You could go on your instincts a little bit more, maybe? And it's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking
going on, but it's like, I just like it's defense. I like her Patricia's defense. I like what he got going on. What was it, Sadman? CJ left the ring. Yeah. Uh, no. Now, I wanted to mention Sad, I was kind of like happy fun. Yeah. That's what you want. Want to listen to that? No. No. All right. No, that's my dog. I'm going to say it. Kind of missing a little bit, but yeah, I'm happy fun, though. Well, don't thank you. Go ahead. One last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys would win your own. How much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and along the summer year, your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like, um, yeah, I do feel like I did win the national championship, but like you said, my role wasn't same as how it's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling maybe on the field, a lot more place. Great. Oh, Bill, thank you very much. Thanks, I'm so. Ron's a unique offense compared to the NFL, especially
with the way he uses receivers. How do you anticipate your role changing and how do you view the offense from a receiver perspective, specifically? Yeah, um, I mean, I think he likes to really push the ball down the field. He likes to be balanced. He likes to give different looks to a difference. You know, we're going to not to try to get too much into it, but you know, we're going to use some motion, move some guys around and things of that nature. I think for myself, I feel comfortable playing any of the positions that is that is asked whether it's the slot, the outside positions and unique part about our offenses. I don't think necessarily you play the X or the Z because the pit on the formation of the hash, you can be the opposite. You can be the X, but then you're to the field now you're the Z. So you got to really learn the entire concept and know where you're out in the field, which I think makes everybody smarter players because you don't pigeonhole yourself. I just play X. You know, I only know this position. Like you get in two minutes, you're the Z. Now you got to know what to do. You may have the clear out router. You may have the backside dig. Like you got to know what you're doing.
So I think he doesn't just say like we're going to do this offense. He's really trying to create an office that hits our personnel really well. That field boundary thing. Yeah. That's a thing in college, but it seems like it's more to clip. Is that something you're used to seeing in other offenses? You've been in the, yeah, definitely. I mean, I think if, if I'm on the left hash, like technically, I'm the X, you know, I'm in the boundary, but if we're on the right hash, I'm still on the left side, I'm really the Z in the concept because I'm to the field, I'm to the strength of the tight end. I've been in offenses like it's similar like that before. And, you know, I just think he, he, one thing I think that's really stood out as the compliments of our routes that we have so far. I feel like we have a chance to really run similar stems, but there's different routes off those stems and things like that, which I think for receiver like myself who you get, you know, a really good look at DBs and they study your film, they study your splits, like having routes that look the same, but break off at different, different angles is extremely important
because it feels like you have some versatility in your bag to go out with versus like, you got this hitch again, you're backside, like that's all you got, you know what I mean? So, yeah, he's just been a really good player, person to work with and he's been really communicative with the leaders and how we want this offense to look like and some of the ideas that we may have as well. So it's, it's been a really cool transition. You talk about the transitions, you've learned offense in three years, probably your fourth and sixth years. Yeah. How do you not kind of build up some barriers? Yeah, man, I got to do this again. Right. I think, you know, human nature is always a factor in whatever you do in life, but I think I try to make a conscious choice of coming in with a new year mentality each and every year. And I think it's easy because we've had so many changes and it's been great working with Marcus and Jaden and Jeff and Sam, all of everybody. It's been great working with all the quarterbacks and I just have
a mentality and not really being complacent. Like I try to really focus on the things that I can come back better at this year and I've been working my butt off to do that. So I think the easy thing and when I was younger, you're like, dang, like you just want that consistency. You know what I mean? Like you want that something you could depend on, but like life isn't, life isn't always like that. So I've been reinvigorated because of just the energy that DQ brings into our building each and every day and the coaches as well. It's fun competing, you know what I mean? And sometimes I could get lost in the grind, but I think the reason why you make it here at this level is because you fall in love with the competition of it. And I think the competition breathes the success because that is really where you, the iron truly sharpens iron. So you know, other guys are going to make plays, but you get excited to go in there and know that the next day we're going to go right back after the defense. So for myself, I'm just looking forward to continue to grow
with the quarterbacks that we have. I mean, year six now, which is extreme blessing and leader, one of the leaders in our room. And I just try to take the bull by the horns with that. And so that's really been my focus. And I'm excited for another year. To us, it's looked like you're being more vocal on the sidelines to help young guys. Definitely. Something you decided this off season? I think that's been a part of my maturation process as a leader. I've always seen myself as somebody that was a leader by example. But from coaches and other teammates I've had over the years, guys like to hear what I have to say for whatever reason sometimes. And I think the biggest thing where I've tried to figure out where I fit in with my vocal leadership is I never wanted to be like a dictator. I never wanted to tell guys what to do or be a yellow or things like that. When I say something, I wanted to have power. I wanted to have meaning. And I hope the guys would feel the same way if they were to ask them that question. Because I want to see all these guys win, man.
It's hard to make it in this league and stay in a career. And so anywhere I could help the receivers, the DBs. I'm talking to some alignment, Johnny who's rehabbing his foot. You know what I mean? Like everybody has a role. And everybody has a different story and path. And so if I could share what I've been through my testimony to help them or do things that kind of slow down the process, I'm going to try to do that because we need everybody from the rookies to the 10 year vets to make this thing work. So more so, I try to speak to what I know. And really those honest conversations that I try to have with guys, what they know, I'm coming from a good place. And I think I'm not the type of guy where I'm just going to talk to them. Like if they see something, I could take a coaching point from Luke McCaffrey. I could take a coaching point from Dei Ami, from Jahan, from Marcus, from anybody. You know, like I think that's what makes you a great player when you can really be coachable from anybody and not take it from a personal standpoint.
Hi. Hi. Good. Going back to what you were saying about Cliff and the offense, how is he as a teacher in teaching all this? Yeah, I mean, I think he does a really great job of making things simple, first and foremost. He doesn't overcoach. And I think that's the trust that he has in our group. And his coaches, our position coaches, to fill in the details. So we'll have an install meeting. And it'll be a good amount of time. But then our position coaches will have time and we'll make it specific to that position. And so then we'll come in and have a walkthrough. And then after that, we'll have another walkthrough. And so I don't think there's been a time where I've come out here and I'm kind of worried about what I got. You know what I mean? And when you get into certain offices, there could be so many details where you could be overwhelmed. And I think then it forces, it kind of separates guys in a sense that one guy may study more than another guy. But when you have these sessions that we have, where we're having the installs in the morning, we're having two walkthroughs and then we're coming on the field and doing it. Like I think you notice a lot of guys are playing a lot faster
and more confident because he's keeping it simple. But also he's very particular in what he's expecting. But it's not a lot. So there's not a pressure of to get it right. But at the same time, you know it's expected of you. And you know you're going to have the tools given to you to be successful out there on the field. And this offseason, just the totality of change from front office players coaches, the turf field. And what has that been like for you just to see what's going on? It's been fun. You know I think from Mr. Harris and the entire ownership group down to Adam Peters, down to DQ, down to Jada, who he drafted and bringing in Marcus and Jeff and all those guys and down to leaders. We have on our team. I think it was extremely specific on the way they tried to build this thing going into this year. First, having the right people, bringing in leaders, bringing in guys who loved to compete. First thing that DQ said when he came here was, and his first meeting, like if you love to compete, this is going to be the place for you. And I love it. I mean, I love bags and going at it with the DBs every day.
Like the little mundane stuff can seem a little boring. But I think that was where you make the gains during the offseason where you're really focused on, hey, I'm going to give all I got for this day and I'm going to get better. And then I'm going to learn from the film and come back tomorrow and ready to do it again. And he also understands the benefits of having breaks. He's giving us breaks. We've had weeks off here and there that we can compose ourselves. But then come back and give it all we got. You know what I mean? And when you got a coach that understands the physicality of an entire season where you guys do need breaks by the same time we're going to get after it, it makes it fun as a leader because you can take that to your room and be like, yo, we got these, we got this week, you know what I mean? That's extremely important. But you know, we have this little break coming up where you're going to get your mind and your body and your soul. So coming into this season, I'm really optimistic of what we can be this year. And I think it started with the foundation that the ownership group and the entire staff has built. And now it's on myself as a leader to continue
to hone that in into the locker room. But I think it's great because we have so many great leaders from all across the league who have won and we got Bobby Wagner in there. You know what I mean? I asked a hall of fame or so like, you know, being able to have kind of guys like that that you can lean on that can sometimes take over that leadership role where it doesn't fall on one person. I think it's extremely refreshing. And knowing that everybody's on the same page and the message is the same allows you to go out there with confidence and know what's expected of you. Terri, you seem to spend many of your off seasons learning about things beyond football, how happy is what happy is you doing any of this off season so far to how these are increased your knowledge of this world around you. Let's see the question. Play a lot of golf. That day just keeps my competitive juices flowing, planning the wedding. That's going well. And I mean, I've just been grinding like, honestly,
you know what I mean? I've been hungry this all season. Like, I started working out pretty early. And you start to see guys coming back and it's just fun to be here and compete and feeling like everybody's on the same page. You know what I mean? And so for me, I'm a grind every off season, but just this one just feels like it's the start of something new and special. And the foundation of is extremely important. And to be a part of that, to have a hand in that, it's an honor. And I put a lot of expectation on myself to come out here and be the guy that I know I'm capable of. And also, like, take him the next step and be in somebody that our quarterbacks that can trust and believe in. So this off season was pretty simple for me. It was just really about working and grinding and getting better. You talked about Jayden before. You're anything so far? I know we haven't seen everything. In terms of his arm strength, the throws, he's making
anything surprising so far about the types that his ability in that regard. Definitely. I think after the second or third crosser that he threw, I started telling our series, like, hey, you got to get your head around. You know what I mean? Because again, each quarterback throws the ball differently and sees the field differently. So sometimes on crossers, a lot of quarterbacks may like to see you cross the ball and get into that open zone over there if it's a man flattened off. They like to see you get open. With him, he has a really good anticipation over the middle of the field where he can make those throws and give you a chance to catch and run. And he's really accountable too. Like, we had to play today where he felt like he missed me and it's not a big deal at all. You know what I mean? Him and I could talk to those things. And there's been a play that I've talked to him about. I could do a better job. But again, that open form of communication from a rookie, I think is very rare. And I think it speaks to the confidence he knows who he is. But he's also not afraid to say when he's wrong. And he knows he needs room to improve. But his touch on the D ball is amazing. I love getting extra reps after practice with him.
We're just catching the top end of a D ball. That's big for me. I get to track the ball over my shoulder and it's big for him to be able to get used to dropping the ball in the bucket. But he just naturally has an ability to throw the ball. He sees the windows really well. And now he's just continuing to get adjusted to the speed in the past rush. I think these reps that he's getting are unbelievable during 11 on 11 because he's getting to feel pain and all in and DA and Cleveland Farrow. We got some dogs up there who are going to come after him. And we got some great guys up front who are going to protect them. And so these reps I feel like are even better than just 7-0-7. 7-0-7, I think he could do in the sleep to be fair. He throws the ball really well. But when you get this 11 on 11 and two-minute drill, you're putting them in game-like situations. And I'm looking them in his eye. I'm like, we play a real ball now. We playing. And I mean, you just see no anxiousness in his game and his demeanor, which is extremely exciting. And then he's extremely light-hearted. And he's always smiling. So he's joking with lime and d-line. He's just cool with everybody. And like I said, for a rookie quarterback
to come in like that where guys are gravitating to him. And he's not afraid to be who he is. That's dope. I think he has a bright future for himself. Last one. The tough losses, the tough seasons. It can weigh on a player. You're entering the prime of your career. J.A. kind of mentioned it last year. All he cares about is winning. He wants to win now. Is there a sense of urgency? You obviously always want to win. Knowing that you're getting to the prime of your career, like you want to win now. Yeah, I think that's a fair question. I think you start to evaluate when you're six. And you notice how fast it goes. And I try not to put the cart before the horse were looking too far ahead. But at the same time, you do want to win. You want to be a part of a winning culture and have a chance to win the Super Bowl and the playoffs and all those things. That's why we do this personally. And I'm just excited with being a part of an organization in an environment where now everybody's on the same page in the message is uniform.
And it speaks from the top down. And it reflects the guys that they're bringing in. All the guys that they brought in are guys who are hungry, who are competitors, who not only fighting for spots, but are going to help us win games. And when you're around an environment like that, that makes you excited, makes you hopeful. And you don't know how it's going to turn out until we start playing games. But the foundation is extremely important. And I think this offseason, we've really done a great job of building that. They have. And then when a coach Quinn guy here building with this team, so I feel like we're going to be going into this offseason really. Knowing we all got to do individually to become ready for camp, but the message is clear. To come back to camp ready, to compete, and be ready to win. Thanks, Daryl. Appreciate you guys. Did you have a great time? Yeah, we should. Appreciate you guys.
One of the funniest guys on the team right now is I just wanted to get more experience under my belt. So I can bring younger guys with me because I've been going a lot. One of those younger guys we're seeing it out here. It's the first time I've heard all of your life. What have you seen from Will? Because I kind of felt like I should have real forgot about it because he was heard now he's running almost a second man out behind you and tied. What have you seen? Will is a workhorse. He goes, stay quiet. He's going to work hard. And that's what I love about him. He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's going to get the job done. Do a job right. Really has any mistakes? What would be a successful season? A national championship? Ring, win, all the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't be beat. We just got to go show it. It's like, that mindset different. Seems like you guys expect a national championship over here this year even more so. You guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like that. Is that the case?
You can feel the difference or is it not really any difference? It's just the same. You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that, hey, you guys want to win a national championship? But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year. Like you're that close. So I'm saying, we just work harder. That's kind of coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares, just work harder. Like those, you know, when we played Georgia, the same thing. Last play, you know, they went on the win in 90. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles.
Of course, it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to come back and work harder, do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought I was working hard, but then you always find out there's a little more you could have been doing? Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought freshman year I was working. It's hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all, compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. If you could sustain it as a 16, then the answer to like, what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. It's just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder in shape. The idea of a potential is 16 and 17 and 17. I mean, I said about that idea, there's a make you nervous
about can you last that long? You're in your worries. I think I'm going to tell that out there. I think I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Uh, just everybody's like online, D line. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D line and all on and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of that, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, I thought, like, there are no mom's, you know, I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games, like, you know, in order to end to your north, those kind of games. I, of course, I want to be in because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald is he got a kick. I mean, you guys, it was a second year. Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal. Y'all, you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's grown right now.
He has to work, I think he just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 6-3. You're 3-27. He's 3-26. Yeah, I kind of look at him like my junior, but, you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's got to develop more in getting the playbook. So really a lot on you, older guys. Is that a large group of young guys and then these seniors in the back? Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right, burn the offseason. So they can play. And I just played, I want to like contribute, like make plays, tackle, and sex. It's great to have a work in this version. It seems like these guys get bigger. Each one of the freshmen class is bigger or bigger. And those guys kind of, it doesn't kind of allow you in the cell. Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of some of the day too when I'm passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined.
I have to say that. It looks like they're ready to work with me. I'm going to score this, though. It feels like, you know, there's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defense attackers who can eat up space, but also move, you know, right? That is that. Is that an inquire that maybe for a great defense to have guys like you that have some balls? But also a great feeling. I think that is definitely, I think if you look at the last couple of nice and matured winners, like team up North, they didn't know they got two good, uh, detaco, two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacles. So I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, they're going to fight by the defense attack. It's like, what's Georgia? Jordan Davis and Jim Carter. Let's miss again. It's Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions for you. I mean, you understand this because you play it, but I feel like some time I don't know it.
Are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to? I think so. Uh, I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving forward and four, seven, eight, and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think it, when you think about those freakish attacks, how do you think you fit that ball of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch it do the drills. I have a tape here. You're like, look at my film. So I think I'm up there. I think you become like a artist who comes to the bad guy's. I think your legs have your legs. I mean, you're going to spring practice. You're not doing as much a weapon on a weapon. I don't know. Do you have like a gold one? I don't remember how many I've lost. You have a gold one. Five. How many people want to have this? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that.
But I think they've counted. I think they've counted some of them. And it's some of them where I like just listed. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's goes big. And what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter bag is anywhere you can. It's great for the defense, you know, just that little thing covering his eye, you know, he might throw it. A little bit to the left to our player. So, it's something that you really, really have to work on. It's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most during your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Oh, that past two days. We don't have to ask for this title. We're kind of kind of expected for this one. I think I just have like a eye for the ball comment. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. I just try to get in his way and sometimes he throws it to me. I don't know. I'm your teacher. Do you want to be a high school quarterback? I mean, they get frustrated, but you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better.
Yeah. That's a lot of, a lot of different backs, man. They just learn and grow for them. If you got a pick on top three backs, you have a ball right now. One, two. Uh. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Although he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. Who's the best back in this drive? Best back in this drive. I lead that up to y'all. That's y'all decision. Playing well, Howard. What I'm going to remember most. Uh. We're a Howard, man. He's just such a great lead, such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players, they fold, man. He was just always calm and relaxed, man. And he just the leader that he was, man, that's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's, he's going to be really good, man. He's, um, Coach Lock.
I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people's, man, he's smart the way that he goes about his business, man. He's mature. And so man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands. I was right there. I'm looking at the view of C-Spotting. I'm just having a nice personality and a coach. I'll keep that up and something the same way. Yeah. Um, coach, coach Heartline, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well. You know, I'm just learning from him as well. You know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Heartline. And so he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think that would do really good. Just intensity, man. And since he got the playoffs, every game, man, is like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing.
Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and intensity keeps getting higher and higher. And so, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work. Just like Ohio State, you know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship. And then shoot right after that. I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at your morph performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man. They did a really good job. And you know what you mean? The Bucking Nears.
No, I haven't. Do you think it's a city champion? Temple, a champion. Nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and avert. You've been on the races and awesome offer. You've been to your mentality of like when you've got a linebacker, so you're going to get a jab. You're going to get a bigger than you when you're getting ready to score a ball. Yeah. Yeah, no, man. It's really all about technique. And then it's about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Wil Howard. It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Wil I think it was for the first game. I was like, I got your brother. I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit. You know, and so I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that. But I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brothers, though, man, making sure that the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed.
You had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you've been working on right now? In my game. You can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like it's more so. You know, you got to put the pads on. You know, I want to go through some inside run, you know, maybe. I was really just continuing to run through tackles. And so that's I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better. I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year. And so I just want to continue to build on that. So you know what I'm saying? Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So people say you look like a lot of morale there. If that comparison, you have to be male, you're more. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera. Sure, yeah, man, I have a Camera. Great, great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. Yeah.
Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield. You know, a man and man coverage. You're getting on that line backer and so. Great. What do you have? Do you have a team to be here? A couple of years. You're a minor student there. You'll have the perfect person. Of course, you will be. But I don't know just how much person it is. Or maybe it's more than you have that preference. So you have so much attention. Like I said, you did. Yeah, I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man. And the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard. You know, even shoot. I don't know. Every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely man. He's going to be a special player, man. He really is. So, man, a lot of ups and downs, man.
It's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm not have something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity. I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't. It's not too much. They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so, being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments where it's tough, you know, where it's low. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort. You know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so, that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so, which aspect could be to those other individuals who want to come from being around power and strength?
Man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. Am I just really loved their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Wil Howard, his leadership, but Quencha, I'm a mentality man. That boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted. You know, you see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, still farming somebody, and she, that's a gain of 10. So, you know, try to do some of the things he does, he just realizes two different guys. Yeah. Shoot, I think, yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, too, beyond it. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong. And so, you know, he's able to do, he's able to do those things. So, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game, and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quencha. You know, I want to look at his game and it's like, man, where can I get better at as well? Just the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player.
What are your last words of dreams? Julian Sand. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate. And so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, continue to grow as a leader, continue to grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for high state. I know just the quarterback position. I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask Julian Sand as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead the offense and lead the team. Shoot, man, he has a build like JK Dobbins. I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his none. A lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is great. I remember before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every one of his years here, like four or five times.
And so, man, he was such a great back. And I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same. Appreciate you all.
Thank you. Thank you.
Well, I got coming in last round to the role. So I just tacked Eric Dave really the same way. I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240, I'm like 240, 44 right now. Last year, I played at like 236 to 37. What does it feel like at 244? I feel like almost a different machine out there. Yeah, like, what does it feel like to be running around out there like you are with more, more back? I just feel like I'm like, like, like more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all blocks better. It's a big, yeah. Is it daunting? Maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year.
And you played quite a bit last year and stuff. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? You just got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps. But how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-stand point? Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My, I'm ready for it. The text is open. It's a rematch. But it's not really two different teams compared to the last time you all played and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with the opener like that, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming, so we know we got to do what we prepared for it. Already this is probably what you're going to do. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman, like he ended up hitting the book. He stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy. Like he saw it on the sideline too. Or, like you said, you're ready. You know you're ready.
When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling this year than last year? That's the most possible thing to do that. I asked one more time. How different is that response bill? That should be ready to just be emotional. Call that. If you were last year, you knew you were a homemaker. I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was attention to everything I did. I was like this year, it's going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Is somebody who's somebody you can ever see? How do you trust?
And what word? How's anybody where you watch? I say, describe my game. I say, when you think of me, you would think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet. I don't really know bullet. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. You really want to embody that? No, I ain't got to be my nickname. But I'm saying that the nickname to be, that's all. Oh, yeah, yeah. You want to embody that? Yeah, that's like. I'm going to come up with a more spacious style and have it free. How does that fit the view? And what are you going to show me about the whole thing in that kind of style? I think it fit me because I just like the defense. I feel like we got, like you said, we got a lot of freedom. We moving around a lot of the terms is like, you know, I don't know.
What was it, Sadman? CJ left me. Uh, now I wanted to much sad. I was kind of like happy for him. Yeah, that's what you want. No. No. All right. No, no, no, no. That's my dog. I'm going to say yeah. Kind of missing a little bit. But yeah, I'm happy for him though. Well, don't think you go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own. How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and along the summer year. Your classmates. Yeah, I do feel like, um, yeah, I do feel like I did win a national. But like you said, my role wasn't same as how's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling with me. Be on the field. A lot more place. Great. Oh, well, thank you very much. Thank you. Thanks. I feel like I kind of have a lot of meters on the D line at the D in position.
So we kind of all kind of just have to talk to each other. Is that been a tough challenge for you to be able to hold this up to you guys playing with them all. You were in the field and you just started to get a lot of attention out. And you try to just be like, oh, you need to be able to do this guys. What is that transition into? Um, it's very competitive and we love it. We all competitive people. We all love to fish each other. And I feel like the bringing the best out of all is, we're all just kind of bouncing off each other and seeing what one person does and we kind of build it into our actual box. And we all kind of just kind of build one great big one. Hey, do you remember when I last year you got the shot at the full back in the world. And did they approach you with that idea and two coached him? I mean, how did that come about? Because you heard Jackson, all your was not me. You could have touched that. So I definitely didn't in high school. I was pulled back and a little bit of tidied in. So I feel like they kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson. Honestly, you love watching it too. Before you left. And I feel like you playing that seed and coach day's head and coach day kind of just went for it.
And I tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that continuing now? Do you need anything to screen? New playbook. I did not know you. I haven't got that far. How tough was that? You know, look at that. I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field. You need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it. And I'll try to do my best for you. Kit Jack, do the same thing. Oh, yeah. I don't want to look at you. Roughly, that's what I'm talking about. Talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of sought you and got out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just got to win into those from your perspective. And out of that help you maybe get the right mindset I guess many needs for. Definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened. And they don't know everything that goes into it. How long the season is now. What you got to do to prepare for it and what's happening all that time from here to here to this. So I feel like we definitely just coached in the kind of connected.
And then we kind of just talks man-to-man and he kind of just sat straight to me. And I feel like we kind of both have been honest. And we know we're making it. We're making each other better every day. We got the 4 best Dn's, 5 best Dn's honestly. And then the college football and we're going to be one of the best D-rides in college football. How do you feel like a better player today than you were in this season? I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader. And kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team. And kind of bring people in and I feel like we're kind of helping out more. How do you break your head around the process of taking the FC? What's up Sal? I mean, it sounds bizarre, but I mean the season goes by so fast already. So when you're kind of like week 10 in, you're like wow it's already week 10. So now it's kind of, it gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it. Because you've come already here 3 and you feel like you're in freshman's first place crazy. But you don't want to spend all your power in the first month of the year right? Oh yeah.
There is a lot of pace yourself there. I mean, there is a mindset that I did in the season. Yeah definitely, definitely going to have the mental stability that hand all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys about in the last question right here? He's 2016, 2017, 4 and 5, 2, 5, 2, 1, so much. How much has he talked to that back? I mean he doesn't have to talk about it, we know about it. We've seen it every day, we watch the film, we see them all working together, we know what it could be, we know we could become. So we know we're at the same, we're at the right place at the right time and God wanted us to be here. And he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together and something special. We plan as much so I just wanted to get more experience under my belt so I can bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot of good. One of those younger guys we're seeing right here, it's the first time in Spurdog, we're actually just listening. What have you seen from Will? We've just kind of got a lot of passion and we all forgot about it because he's heard how he's running, you know, almost a second man up behind you and Ty.
What have you seen from that experience? Well as a workhorse, he goes, stay quiet, you go and work hard and that's what I love about him. He focuses, he don't really talk much, he's going to get the job done, do a job right, rarely has any mistakes. So what would be a successful season? A national championship? A ring? When? All the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't be beat and we just got to go show it. That mindset different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year, this year even more so, you guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided that nothing is going to happen. Does that just keep you feeling different or anything? Not really any different, it's just the same for us. It's definitely a different, everyone working harder. We noticed our last run, most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go bigger, go home then, we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan, but when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute, right?
You know what I mean? You were right there, something goes a little different, you guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that, hey, you guys want to win a national championship, but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year, like you're that close. So I'm saying we just like work harder, that's kind of what you make of saying. You know, nobody cares, just work harder. Like those, you know, when we played Georgia, it's the same thing. Last, last play, you know, they went on the win in 90s. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season, I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, you know, it's frustrating, but you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder, do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn, I thought that was working hard, but then you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college.
I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now, so just to learn anything. What do you need it to be to be your best? 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder in shape. So, I think, I think we, I definitely can lie as I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody's like, oh, line, D line. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D line and the O line and everywhere else so we can last that long.
Speaking of the top-lice game, let me snap. Did you like playing that many snaps again last year because I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that next time? Yeah, I did, unless we were like winning by like a line. I thought like, there are no moments you know, I can go sit down or something, but we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame too or North, those kind of games. Of course, I want to be, because I know I can contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald is he got a key, but we got the last second. Oh yeah, definitely. KMAC is a KMAC's animal. You haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows it all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has to work at the, he just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to six or your three 27, he's three 26. Yeah, I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know, KMAC, he's going to be a great player. He's just got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you older guys, there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back.
Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work and we got to get them right during the all season. So they can play and not just play. They want to like contribute like make plays tackles sex. It seems like these guys get bigger. Each one of the freshmen class is a bigger figure. Those guys kind of, those are going to kind of while you're in the cell. Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes and they all work hard. I've only seen much of something day two when I'm passing on, but throughout the workouts, they've been working hard. They're determined. I'd say that. And it looks like they're ready to work with me. How important this is. It feels like there's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defense attacks that you can eat up space but also move. Right? That is that. Is that an environment maybe for great defense to have guys like you that have some balls,
but also a great feeling? I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners like Seymour North, they got two good detacled, two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacles. I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on a big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, they're going to fight by the defense attack. What's Georgia? Jordan Davis and Jeff Carter and what's Michigan is. Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions. You can get this money in the house. I mean, you understand because you play it, but I feel like some time I don't know. Are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now you see in like those guys, they're moving forward to 478 and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about this freakish attack, how do you think you fit into that ball of that kind of player?
You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch it do the drills. I have tape here. You're like, you're looking like my film. So I think I'm up there with all those times. Tyler, can you become like an artist or come to the band of passes? Yeah. I think your legs can be clanked. When you're going to say, Frank Bragg, you're not doing as much a weapon on a lot of them. I don't remember how many of you had last year, but you have a goal in mind. How many of you want to have? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that, but I think they've counted. I think they've counted some of them. And it's some of them where I like just missed it. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's goes big and what we do is a deal on, you know, just affecting the quarterback. It's anywhere you can. It's just great for the defense. You know, just that little thing you covered is I, you know, he might throw it a little bit to the left or our player. So, so it's something that you really, really have to work on.
It's really that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You've got to get your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that passes through the two. We don't have to ask for the style. We're kind of kind of expected for the people. I think I just have like a, like, an eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. I just try to get in his ways. And sometimes he throws it to me. I don't know. How do you rotate it? Do you want to be a high state quarterbacks? I'm in your back, down passes. I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting back. I should lot of, a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs. You got to go right now. One, two.
It's just like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold, man. He was just always calm and relaxed, man. And he just the leader that he was, man. That's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's shoot. He's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people's man, he's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so, man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so, man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands.
Yeah, Coach, Coach Hartlund, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well, you know, I'm just learning from him as well. You know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartlund. And so, he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so, I think they'll do really good. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, how I'll talk to a lot of players before then. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida and I'm writing to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at your morph performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man, they did a really good job. The Bucking Nears, you know what I have? Temple of Tampa. Temple of Tampa Nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and avert. Yeah. Yeah. No, man. It's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother.
It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit, you know. And so, I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that. But I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man, making sure the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you've been working on right now? In my game. You can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like. It's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe. It's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so, that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better, right? I feel like I did a good job of that in my senior year. And so, I just want to continue to build on that. So, you know what I was saying? Yes, I did. Yes, I did.
So, people say you don't look like that. How long is it more out there? You get back in your scene. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera. Sure, yeah, man, I have a Camera. Great, great back, man. Just what he does and knows, 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield. You know, a man and man coverage. You're getting on that linebacker. And so. Yeah, I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man.
And the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard. You know, even shoot, I don't know, every good thing. And he had it, every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day, he's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely, man, he's going to be a special player, man. He really is. I'm not going to be looking like that. I'm going to be out for a lot of start-kid, you know, some victories. I think it's a match between the two. When it worked back, I'm going to put the stand-up like you said. Man, a lot of ups and downs, man. It's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm going to have something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't. It's not too much. They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so, being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments, where it's
tough, you know, where it's slow. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you, he gives you, he gives you, he gives you, he gives you, he gives you that peace and comfort. You know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't, you can't explain it's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so, that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so, you know, the back of the firm, Peterson Power and Judgment, is through what you're doing. Which aspect of each of those other individuals that you run to, and how are you going to get the power? Man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. I just really love their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quencha mentality, man, that boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know, you see, you know, sometimes he put in this situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And then, as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, still forming
somebody, and shoot, it's a game to 10. And so, I think, yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, to be honest. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong, and so, you know, he's able to do, he's able to do those things. So, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game, and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quencha, you know, I want to look at his game, it's like, man, where, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man, I'm always looking to grow as a player. Julian Sand, oh yeah, he's going to be a great, he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate, and so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right, just, you know, continuing to grow as a leader, continuing to grow as a player. So, he's going to be really good for high state. Thanks for the guy I was going to start. I'm going to start. He's, I know just the quarterback position, I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've, they've definitely been vocal, and so I feel like that's something that
they're definitely going to ask Julian Sand as well, it's to be that vocal leader and lead the, and lead the offense and lead the team. Thanks, Trent. Shoot, man, he has, he has a build like JK Dobbins, and I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well, and I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his, no, a lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is great. I remember, before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights, like every, every one of his years here, like four or five times, and so, man, he was such a great back. And I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see James people, I see similarities to both of their games, I feel like they play the same. And so, appreciate you all, yeah, I'll be going.
Well, I got coming in last year, I knew the role, so I just tacked Eric Dave, really the same way. Thanks, thank you. Thanks, Eric. Thanks, Eric. Thanks, Eric. Thanks, Eric. Thanks, Eric. Thanks, Eric. Thanks, Eric. I feel like 240, you know, like 240, 4 right now. Last year, I played it like 236, 237. What does it feel like at 244? Or, you feel like almost a different machine out there. Yeah, like, what does it feel like to be running around out there like you are, but with more, more back. I just feel like I'm like, like, like, more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all the bloods better. It's bigger. Yeah. Is it daunting? Maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than
you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year instead of looking at you straight in your head about being on the field that much more. This is going to get ready to just play. There are even more snaps. So, how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-inch standpoint? Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. I'm ready for it. The Texas opener is a rematch, but it's not really two different teams compared to the ones that I'm going to play. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the current opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming, so we know we got to do what we're prepared for. I already just probably worked today. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman, like he ended up here in the book. He studied in like he advanced and his measurements were crazy. He saw it like a saw line to him. I said you're ready. I know you're ready. What was that process like during last season?
Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready for the team needed for me? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Just whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So, I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling this year than last year. That's the most possible thing I've ever been. Asked the one more time? How different is that with Trialsville? That should be that is the most pretty call that. Anyone last year, you knew you were a home player? I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was intentional with everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Somebody who's some reason that you said that.
And what word? Somebody where do you want to go? I say, scrawling. When you think of me, you would think of like a bully, like a silver bully. I don't really bully. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. What do you think of what I want to body? No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but. I'm saying that the big thing is that. Oh, yeah, yeah. You want to body? Yeah, that's it. I've got more questions for Trialsville's style and how it's free. I mean, how does that fit you? And what are you like to show me about bullying in that kind of style? I think it fit me because I don't know. I just like the defense. I feel like we got, like you said, we got a lot of freedom. We moving around a lot. A lot of the terms is like, no, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's okay. Does it? You can go on your instincts a little bit more, baby. That's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on.
I just like his defense. I like how the three of the defense. I like what he got going on. What was it sad when CJ left the room? No, I wanted to much sad. I was kind of like happy for him. Yeah, that's what he wanted. No, no. No, that's my dog. I don't see it. Kind of missing a little bit, but I'm happy for him though. Well, don't think. Go ahead. One last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters. And the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own. How much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like. Yeah, I do feel like I did win a national championship, but like you said, my role wasn't the same as how it's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to go get another one experienced that like feeling with me be on the field, a lot more place. That's it. I'll be able to thank you very much. The championship and you can, you know, be full and everything like that and also need
your your teeth knocked in, you know, first game and you can't have that happening because then you know, really doesn't mean anything. And so just the constant mindset to continually get better is the forefront of my mind and forefront of anyone here you can ask. 70s about the game. 70s about the game. 70s about the game. Yeah. 70s about the game. Yeah, I know. We look at the class sets every now and then I'm like, oh man, they're gone. They're gone. No, it's been. It's been good. I mean, the guys who are still here have definitely kind of bonded together pretty good. So. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, you know, Mark came in the other days like. Yeah, class 12, one best class ever. And like, yes, you know, I can't really can't really even, you know, just sitting to that, you know, not much left. But. Yeah, I mean, to do what we can and do what we can for this team has been really important for all of us.
And I think. Us. Now realizing where the veterans, you know, like with all guys now in the group has been kind of strange, at least to begin with, you know, because you go from. All those guys, you like Donnie and Josh and those guys and all of a sudden, it's Sunday. We have a team meeting after the. Like the celebration in the shoe and all of a sudden the next day there's gone. And you know, it's just very different. So I think us being able to step up as, you know, leaders and as. As vets to help bring out, you know, along the team are units and this program has been really important. What I do overall. Two more questions. Just to try. But then he was your. For sure. Luke so that. Jacob. So far. Yeah. Yeah. Somebody who went through that. What have you been impressed by the. No, it could spend in really well. I mean, I could go and he goes to work. He's extremely athletic, extremely flexible. You know, he's a young kid.
Obviously he's a lot of. A lot of development. He's a little adversity. All of us do. And I think he's going through that right now, but he's been coming out on the better end of it so far and. I'm excited to see what he can do because he's very impressive at this young stage. So I. So I. So overall level of excitement just to be back with. The rest of this interior off the line. You guys have. So just. Yeah, extremely excited. I mean. Trying to just build that culture back up again. You know, like what we had last year. I. I was trying to do a little stuff here and there and I can know I think we're going to Ray race. Barbecue. I think tomorrow. So shout out Ray race. But. But yeah, just trying to get that brotherhood back. Get that, you know, that oblock spirit back. Sure it's coming soon. Hopefully. But just to kind of get those. Not those same faces, but those same kind of mindsets back in our group is important right now. And it's been fun to meet new guys from different backgrounds and stuff like that.
And try to. Figure out how to build that and mend that together. It's been pretty cool. Now as you are one of the most experienced veterans on this team, how much do you feel like you have to be a leader for the students here? Yeah, for sure. I mean, I think that comes. It's obviously. I don't feel like it's natural to anyone to immediately step up and that's something I've been working on every day and talking to God about. But I obviously understand that and that's something I want to continue to work on. I want to be able to. Be a guy that people can fall back on and like coach was saying before like we're going to have highs and lows, but the great players, the ones we can set our clocks to and I kind of want. That's my goal is to be one of those people that you can do that. And I think for especially a very new set of eyes in the Woody, not only coaches, but players. I think it's very important to kind of keep that steady mindset. And I think for me, learning how to be a leader has been important just to not be too hard on myself, but also not let myself kind of slack off in some departments to try to keep steady.
Just your story itself, though, is testament of what it means to like for perseverance and stuff, too, though. Right. Carsel. I mean, you know, that's a nice stand up from somebody to say that, right? I mean, just what do you think you've shown more than anything else in every card? Yeah, I mean, I've been blessed, you know, I've, you know, I've been blessed with a lot of adversity. I think that's definitely made me better on the back end. And, you know, coach, so it's coach, they always talks about it. And you don't, you know, great leaders aren't, you know, they can show it. But you know, a lot of people can show a lot of people can just talk about it. But to be about it is important. And I think to be not, I've went through a lot of that adversity. I went through a lot of that stuff and my testament, you know, has been written in an interesting way. But I think for me to take that next step is really important for not only for this team, but for myself personally. Yeah, he's been doing great. I mean, he came in big, freaking strong. He's fun to be in the weight room with.
He's kind of quiet. Like that's kind of my first impression on him, but he's actually pretty funny, dude. He, he and his dad come over and they kind of joke around. So he's been doing a great job. He's been doing a great job for his size. He has like freaky athletic feet. Like I watched him do the ladders and that's a lot of massive over on those things. You know, doing a little acheshuffle. But I mean, he was killing it. And so he's been doing a great job. I can't wait to see how he kind of continues to develop throughout this summer and throughout this fall camp. Yeah, I'm not that bad. What it all has to be. Yeah, Piggy's been doing great. I mean, he, he stepped up. Piggy, yeah, yeah, everyone refers to this Piggy. It was his username one time. Nice. Everyone's Piggy. But anyway, you know, Pig's been doing great. He, uh, he's been able to step up and kind of bring around along those younger guys. You know, everyone's kind of trying to figure out their, their new roles. And I think he's been, uh, he been doing a lot of things. Big body guy that he catch the bar. Can run between the tacos.
Um, his feet are quicker than once you think for a big guy. Yeah, really good feet. We get balanced so that's what makes him good. That's what I saw. Is that a comment for a bigger back like you have? For utility? No, I'm trying to get a blank. I'm running back. I'm trying to get back. Well, tight end background. Now, I don't know many with that type of background, but when he's a high school, you receive that they try to play as an age back. Well, really good. When you look in the portal for running back, so we're going to try to recruit running back. Does it matter to you if you have two different styles of running back to me, one guy can do certain things better, one guy can do certain things better. Or is it, you'll just say the best running back. You can find it. I want to have different styles. I want to do stuff. I'm going to try to take the same thing. You know, take the same thing. You know, take guys with different skills. Whether they're big guys, small guys, past characters, in between the type of runners. I don't know. You know, I don't want to take the same thing. They're all different, different backs. You guys have a willing finish on a lot of the lower red zone story.
You guys are engineering. Was it important to find the best exercise that CJA has to open up in the last few weeks? No, I have my own opinion on the size they've been in the company. They've had joint James out of order. And he's my grandson, Brandon Schoer, Yarns, and Freshman. Probably way to 2, 10, 12, five. Which is not being big, but they ain't got nothing to do with being. Some guys just got to know, sticking their back in his own. And you play with a lot of aggression down here running. So that could be CJA. That could be James. Or it could be the Freshman, though, Jackson. It's just who has a nose for getting in his own. That's where I'm going over it. You don't have to be six, two, two. No, just because you're being there, don't make it tough. We need to get, obviously, fresh running back in with it and blow it in there here. But what do you need to see from a freshman to feel comfortable with that place? In the first day, you were there on the ball.
When they do their little small detail, they take care of the ball. The second day will be how good they in the past. Because it's the hardest thing for high school best. Because they're not the biggest year in high school. You have to understand the past, but by all their falls on the knee. So like those days say, I'm the main person in my heart. So that's why I need to see first, and everything. I will understand the weakness of the health and the good. You feel comfortable with Bow and I say, where they're at, or at least where their time lives, right? Yeah, I think they're going to be fine. Like I said, I tell all the young guys, these are marathon, that was fun. The first day, the first you've been at Irma's Spide on Specitude. You're in Spide on Specitude, then you earn the right to be a buck out of you. So get that down the field. So I think they're turning the right towards you. First practice, not it wasn't merit, the Sunday build off for them. Kidding stuff to work on.
Good? Long day. I've been seeing some of the younger guys in your room developing about, like, Etcher Kusen just coming in this year, seeing him working with you guys. Joshua, Megan, how's he coming along? I feel like they're definitely picking up quick. I mean, I was in their shoes one time, and I had Zach Harrison, Javonte, and Tyler Friedell in front of me. So I thought I was trying to be one of those peers that they were for me, and kind of just giving them the steps to get there. And I feel like they're definitely picking up quick, and they're definitely going to be one of the great Russian. So we coach Joshua Salk about it. JT and Zach, I believe, need a ton of their experience. So you have some real opportunities for you to be out of here. Is there a difference in the work going because you've been getting through an epic camp with me in Alaska? I feel like all the camps, I've definitely gotten a big course learned, and I love that side. I ask Coach J4, and I love getting more reps, because I just like protecting my craft. So I mean, some people may not need it, some people need it, but I mean, I'm just like you as me, right?
I'm like, you're speaking on that course later. So what do I mean? I mean, for me, it's always just kind of getting my little details perfectly, like my steps, my footing, kind of just affecting my toolbox, and what we call it, and my craft, and just trying to be a, it's like a win-everybody place, what kind of difference. Yeah, definitely just getting stronger faster, everything all the above, but one of my big things is being a leader, and kind of just not trying to look, still look up to Jack and Jake T, and kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into. So I feel like we kind of have a lot of leaders on the D line, and we have to be in position, so we kind of all kind of just count off the children. And I'm just going to talk to some of you. I'm talking to the guys, saying what's in all of you, right? And all the family members, we just got into a bunch of things that we are all trying to do, which is really exciting. I'm competitive, and we love it.
We're all competitive people, we all love to fish each other, and that's what it gives the best side of all of us. We're all just kind of bouncing off each other, and seeing what one person does, and kind of building into our actual box, and we all kind of build on one great thing. You're going to be the last year and you have to get the shot at full back in the club. And did they approach you with that idea and two coach's game? I don't get to come up out because you're a checks or a slot game. It gets touched out. So I definitely did it in high school. I was full back and a little bit of tidied in. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson. Honestly, he loved watching it too before he left. And I feel like he planned that seed and coach day's head and coach day just went for it and tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that continuing now? Anything in the screen? New playbook. I did not know yet. I haven't got that far. How top is that? I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field. You need me to just give me a week or two to learn it and kind of perfect it.
And I'll try to do my best for you. Kid Jack, you're the same thing. Oh yeah. Kid, it's talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations. He sort of sought you and got out of that. So conversations after the JT and Jack decided to come back. Just got to wait until those were respected and how did that help you maybe get the right mindset I guess when they do this for them. Definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it. How long the season is now. So what you got to do to prepare for and what happened and all that time from here to to then. So I feel like we definitely just coached in me kind of connected. Maybe we kind of just talks man on man and he kind of just sent straight to me. And I feel like we kind of both are going to be honest. I mean, they're making it. Yeah. Making each other better every day. We got the four best Dn's, five best Dn's honestly. And then college football. And we're going to be one of the best D lines in college football. I think you feel like a better player today than you were again this year. I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader.
And kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in. And I feel like we kind of helping out more. I think record in right across the team. The team gave C. Except sound. I mean, it sounds bizarre, but I mean the season goes by so fast already. So when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow, it's already week 10. So now it's kind of getting more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it because you're already here for your freshman space. But you don't want to spend all your powder in the first month or a year, right? Oh yeah. There is that pace yourself. I mean, there is a mindset. Yeah, definitely. You're definitely going to have that mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys about? The last question right here. 2016, 2017, 4 NFL 2.5 seconds on. So much has he talked about that? I mean, he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become.
So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time. And God wanted us to be here and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together at something special. How did your expectations, I guess, beat up with how do you feel when you've played at this point in the past? I feel like I've made the plays that came to me. And that's where the Ockman control. I've had more opportunities as years progressed and been in the spot to be here on the ball. But the expectation was to come here and contribute to the team and try to help find a way to push the team to win games and high level and to be better than they were last year and for me to play better than I was last year. So really just coming to try to grow with myself and with the team. So that was my big goal and I feel like I've done a good job and the team has done a good job progressing through the year and getting better.
So yeah, that's all I can say about that. We're here to the right. I think many of them are all, yeah, I can't. Just standing here right now. Does it feel like a different season? What does it feel like for you going into the playoffs? You know, you don't get the goal you wanted necessarily to make your mistakes, but here you are. What is that sense that you have right now that's different from the breaking of season? I mean, everybody wants to say it's a new season in terms of, because if everybody's 0-0 right now, when you keep going, if you lose, you're done. But generally, that's how you play every game. You know, that play every game, like it's your last game. So for me, I don't think it's really any difference. You know, they go play at a high level every game that can't be based upon. It's a playout game. You know, you actually don't go play every game like it's the same thing. So I would say in terms of that, no, you just have to play the game. Play the game is there. What feels difficult is defense right now going into this. So you all feel even more tired than we close together.
What was your sense of the furtherhoods of the state of the defense? I feel like we progressed throughout this season. We had to make a team chapter game six, because we lost and we didn't play well again. And I feel like we've grown from that and got into a better place. And over these past two weeks, off just realizing, okay, these are the things that we've messed up throughout the year. These are what we need to fix. These are what this team is trying to exploit on us. So just really going back to everything and looking to better for this kind of game and for the next couple of years. Let's have a question. Tell me your birthday book at home. How does the Tennessee's wide split of your receivers impact you as a hundred? I feel like it makes the game more and more one-on-one game. It makes your receivers lower and db set the play a separate game than the guys up front. And it makes it, truthfully, like those guys have to do their job. And these guys have to do your job.
You've got to be able to stop the running with the people they have in the running fit. And you have to be able to stop their path with the people they have out there. So that's what they do and they do it at a really lead level. So let me tell you what. I'm going to ask you a question. What's the joy of playing on this dispatch? The professionals are talking about the speed at which you guys are at the call end playing. And since these built the tent buildings, it's a kind of fancy. Play call ends. And the player kind of ends is at the GQ. Just speed at the call end. All right. It allows you to get your clean senator. And I said earlier just a ability to see the formation and see what keys that you have before the play. So you're a job in not really thinking. Being able to play and not make during the games a really big thing. So whenever you can get the call that faster and play a high level and play without thought. That's a really good thing for you team. Get a thank you. Appreciate you. Did you ever see like Jackson? All you were sloppy. Oh yeah. You could have touched that.
So I definitely did it in high school. I was pulled back and a little bit of tidied in. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson. He loved watching it too. He loved playing that seed in Coach Day's head. And Coach Day kind of just went for it. And I tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that continuing now? Do you have anything in the screen? New playbook. I did not know you hadn't got that far. Yeah. How tough was that? You're looking back. I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field you need me to. Just give me a weaker chew to learn it and kind of perfect it. And I'll try to do my best for you. Kid Jack, you're the same thing. Oh yeah. What? What? What? What? What? Graphically, that's why. I was talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of side you and you got out to our conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just kind of went into those from your perspective and out of that helped you move you good. The light mindset I guess was really nice. I'm definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it.
How long the season is now. What you got to do to prepare for and what's happening all that time from here to then. So I feel like we definitely just coached in me kind of connected. And we kind of just talked man-to-man and he kind of just sent straight to me. And I feel like we kind of both have been on the same team. We know we're making it together. We're making each other better every day. We got the four best D-ins, five best D-ins honestly. And then coach football and we're going to be one of the best D-lines and coach football. What do you feel like the better player today at any more game this season? I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader. And kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team. And kind of bring people in and I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. How do you record your head around the past as you see the TKFC? The best sound. The good thing about it. I mean the sounds bizarre but I mean the season goes by so fast already. So when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow it's already week 10. So now it's kind of gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it.
Because I'm already here for a really fresh and fresh experience. But you don't want to spend all your counter in the first month of the year right now. Oh yeah. You're not patient yourself that way. I mean there is a mindset. Yeah definitely definitely going to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much is Larry talking guys about? The last question right here. You've got a 2016-2017 4L5-2.5L in total. So that's all in the same location. How much does he talk to that guy? I mean he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. You see it in every day. We watch the film. We see him all working together. We know what it could be. We know what it could become. So we know we're right at the same place at the right time. And God wanted us to be here. And he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off. And just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together and some special events. You get like good coaches who believe in you. And like they give you the tools to go out there and just play with confidence. You know how they're doubting those stuff. Like you got your teammates who got your back. Like our first play when I got up there to the seat.
Like when DeZel, the IGB and your main. Like first thing they say is like no worry just go out there and play with confidence. You know the tools, it's usual tools. It's just go out there and make a play. And we're about to play coming to you. Now we're just so time to show our job. We just do it. And then like say what goes well. He gives me. He puts me in a position like at the drills we put in the work you put in. And when I went to him, so just go out there and just perform at the highest level. How much better are you right now than maybe last month and force break right? I mean, I got to lay better just because I've transitioned a little bit to the inside. I'm nervous for a sound like now I actually can like catch catch take me again. And often covers not it's not always press at the line. Like not maybe like move my feet, move my hands like see like what I got to do just like just a case. I got to go back in corner. I can I'm playing off now. I'm very confident out there. Do you think that was a natural fifth of you or have you had to kind of convince yourself to transition to that? I mean, I feel like it's natural for me because I feel like me individually. I'm a fast learner.
A fast learner like coaches help us like learn fast and like because they're always honest about the techniques and stuff. So you like you write down like you pick up all the things and then like when we get out here they coach us to like the techniques always. We used to go out there and play like fast spot and then you know, I would like you're versatility. You're able to go out there and just compete. Is that where you kind of stuff this spring or do you get kind of out there? So I'm really been stuck there this spring a little bit right whenever you get this like other things. I just bounce out there every once in a while just like have just have fun. See if I still got it every once in a while. So it's as good as go out there to compete at most spots. And then you just have to get into the technique. What technique tips and things that you had to pick up and learn from. I mean, this is always like, you know, because what preaches are asking hands like see it. You see it move your feet and then get your hands on the man. So it's like when you get like, are you out there? Are you able to like process like the way the receiver comes off the ball looking at the hips and seeing like the way he moving. Are you able to pick up like the row concerts you can get out of that like so it's being like other coach walls for me.
Like as a player and just like him breaking out football to you like one on one. It's like very beneficial. What was the hardest part of making that transition from outside that sense? I really say like the corner you got covered to you cover three each. You're covered once like it's easy. But you got nickel. Now, so many responsibilities you got to see like the raw concepts. You got to be able to process like diagnosed rouse faster than what you got to do in a corner and just be able to like everything. You got to quit like a transition. You got to like you got to move fast. You got to learn to move fast. It's like game recognition. Where you think maybe from the most since you got it. And how since you got to that. I would definitely say I definitely say yes because how you get to like college. It's a little bit different. High school. We don't got to worry about things like that. When you get to college in a school like this. Like go recognition of plays. And like you know your jobs the way like the coverage is supposed to be played. Understand all your teammates. It's a very challenging experience. This is a very talented. He's very talented and easy.
He's a humble guy. Great teammate. He's a very supportive. Because I got into the one round because you like you can feed off your energy. Cause you can see like you make a place. He like like like I do. It's like I do you two partner. So he's like maybe after what God is like that would get energy. Made you play a little bit harder. And then like you make a place. and then like, when you make a play, it's out there, it's helping you, it's being out there with him. He's a good player. One of those guys, five questions, and four kids, come to Ohio State obviously. Last week, here's your show. I'll be sure you're first now. What is it about one build that gets you to play at Ohio State? It's a big question, I know. The question. Let me just start some questions, because we have so many kids come out of the blue and just play at games, elite schools, and they like, like, track's a big part of it, because I mean, it's actually a good, good everybody that I run a track, like it's made it through, you don't really get a choice. You able to just like get out here and like know how to compete, and then like, G, like, getting builds that mental toughness into you,
so it's like, have you like, if you're down, you got to be mentally tough, because I mean, life's not gonna be easy, so it's like being out here, being out here, being able to compete, and when you down, just pick yourself back up, I mean, that's what he is down for me, and that's what he is down for me. DT, how would you describe the mentality of the defense right now, getting this opportunity for a Green Pass in the Warden? Yeah, hungry and thankful. I mean, we know how the last time when, we had a chip on our shoulder. I mean, we were riding high before that game, and we took that loss, and we came back and had to make a couple changes, but I think we understand what, everything's that stake right now, just fighting to where another high stage jersey for the next game, that's what's on stake, and just to be able to represent this state and this team. I mean, we understand what's on the line, and we're just hungry and blessed that we get this opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl. Right behind your Adam King, WBNS. What do you remember most about walking off the field in Eugene? What was kind of all your lies in that moment? I mean, there is a, I don't think anybody imagine it,
imagine a solution. I didn't, that's for sure, and I think after that, it was a kind of head deep, understanding that, man, we still, there's still a lot of ball left to be played. I mean, you can let it sting for a little bit, but if you let it carry over too long, then there it goes, there it goes your whole season, but I think we did a great job of just understanding, coming together in this room right here, not being afraid of display, or hold accountability from one another, and as that happened, we came back, we grouped, and we're just going right now, and I'm just blessed for those specific moments, losing, I mean, no one wants to lose, but the testimonies and the things you're taught within those little situations speaks of all of you. After all of that, I'm gonna draw. Jay, what did you see from King Adam the last couple of weeks that was there like a push from him and then they made an operation with him, and we can see like he's playing since the best of all, and things, he's...
Yeah, I mean, that's my boy, he's in the R2X Club too, but, you know, Keata, I mean, every time his number's called, he goes out there and makes the most of it, no matter where we are in the game, when he goes out there, he's just hungry, he wants to go make plays, and you know, we see it in practice, so it's not surprising to us. Bill Rebino, it's fun, it's this bad. Still in Gabriel's obviously very elusive in her talent, and he's not very tall. How important it could be to just kind of stay in your past rush lanes and neglect a lot of balls and kind of make it different that way. Yeah, I think it just comes out being disciplined, no one who you're playing against, like you said, he's sharply very elusive. I mean, he can, he is making throws, I mean, he get out the parking to everything, so I think for us, we just got to say discipline, and just continue to just meet with Coach Jay, meet with the coach's nose, and understand how we can just eliminate that. One question about you and Jay, I mean,
your personality seems to be a little different, you're more on the quiet side, he's the side. How about it? You've played together four years, both five store guys, kind of describe your relationship with him, friendship with him, and just kind of how you complement each other. Man, that's my brother, like he said, we're different, but very alike. I think outside, like you said, he's louder, I'm quiet, but once we're on that field, we're like the same person, we'll do anything for this team, we'll die for our players, and we'll give everything we got. Room together for four years, correct? Yeah, fall camps. Every room? Yeah, sometimes a go over there, slip over there, so yeah. There's a neat one who's the messy one. We have our share of days when we, when I'm neat, he's neat, or we might both be messy, but we do a good job. No, of course. Yeah, I'd probably say I would better kick the jack though. Tony Gertman, Buck I Hell. When you're playing a team for the second time, and that was almost a season to go by now, how much of, are you at square one
with this scouting and preparation, or how much do you take from that game, and how much do you avoid taking so that you don't have any preconceived notions of what you're going up against on the offense. I say it's pretty 50-50, I mean, that game, like you said, it was a while ago, but at the same time, they elevated as a team, so did we, so we understand that they had, they made some changes for sure. There's a certain tendency we can take back from that game, but we also understand that they went on a low run after that, and we can see that they elevated as an offense, so we just got to continue to watch those games, dissect the other games, and just continue to see what stands out and what they changed for the past game. We got a couple calls on Zoom that will wrap up with, first we have Nick Hamilton from Nightcast Media. Nick? I just wanted to ask you basically about the synergy of this defense and how you guys were able to not only celebrate the triumphs, but get through the adversity, be able to be this top notch defense
that you are in college football today. Here, Pete, the question one more time. Yeah, no problem. Wanted to ask you about the synergy, you are able to develop over course of the season, obviously celebrating the triumphs, but also getting through the adversities to where you go all the top notch defense that you all are today. Yeah, I mean, like you said, we went through a lot of trials to trials, but there's also, there's a lot of things we can take away from all the wins and losses. And from those wins, we understood that, hey, we can be the best defense of the country, and from those losses, we understand that there's still things that need to be fixed. And I think when you take all that in, at once, that it comes out to the Comma Goal or the Comma Taco, which is, you can, there's always learning points everywhere. And depending how we dissect those games or how we just continue to come as one and elevate, we continue to just collect all those learning points and just continue to grow from them. And one final question. Joey Coffin, Columbus Dispatch, Joey.
JT, what have you guys done better in the Tennessee game and just late in the season, you think about turning some of the pressures that you've got on a quarterbacks and the sacks and getting home in some of those situations? Yeah, I think it was more just understanding the defense as a whole, understanding everybody's job. I think as the season went on, we had to understand that, you know, we have to know what's going on in the backhand, we have to know what's going on to align back recruits to understand what plays we have, room of freedom. And I think once we understood that and got a better understanding of everybody's job, I mean, it showed this play, because, you know, everybody knows what each other's doing. It's not like the lineback is know what they're doing. The corners and B.I., they know only their job. I think we all know each other's job and we continue to ask each other questions on, you know, if they're blitzing how they can get to the quarterback and, you know, if I'm dropping, playing quarterbacks, I can ask Cody on how to open field tackle it. So, you know, we just kind of lean on each other's understanding because, you know, like I said, like Denzel knows
how to play corner better than I know how to play corner. So, you know, he has more, more wisdom at that position than I do. JT, thank you very much. Thank you. Thanks, man. Pressurator, you know, it's like that in the ball time. I'm new. Definitely a little bit of both. Obviously, I just wanted the team to win. I think we got a chance to win. No, definitely towards it. And then the stretch that last drive, I was a couple of plays here, a couple calls that he made me should have gotten. But, I think the frustration more so it just comes from, you know, wanting to win more, anything. So, you said he was a little surprised how much attention you got right away from the defense. How about you? Yeah, definitely. We maybe killed him or one of ones kind of how the game playing was set up. You didn't got like different coverage like the cloud to my side. And I just kind of had the game goes. What's the process been? Sometimes where, for whatever reason, it just just, just see that. Yeah, definitely. Especially in college, a lot of the game things defensively were taking me away. You know, had a lot of success at a Iowa State University
within one of the boys having different weapons. They kind of still get the victories. And I was, you know, continue to do better jobs when I hear. My heart is the main case. And the process been like post game, getting on the same page with Kyler, just getting his exchange taxed, or you guys getting his film. Yeah, film them, definitely. Kind of asking what did I see there? Kind of go over and play. And I just kind of give him what I saw and kind of different feedback there. Exchange words. Mark, I gather we're asking questions about the previous game. But are you the type of guy to let a game like that winger or how do you flush it? You got to move on. Got to move on some long season. Got 16 more of them. Hopefully, no, I can stay healthy throughout the year and just continue to build and get better each week. You guys did so much work throughout the off season to get on the same page. How different is it when you get into that regular season? Yeah, it's totally different. It's totally different. You can do a lot of things, you know, in shirts and shorts. And then once you go out there, put practice and get pads on, you do like the point practice we do with the colds.
But there's nothing like actually going out there and live action and really trying to be on the same case. So I think that would really should both continue to develop and look at better. That it just a matter of reps, though, as long as it depends. Yeah, definitely, definitely. Like I said, I was kind of my first live action together. So I can continue to give up. When you're early impressions of it. So I turn around with the old together and the crazy was Kyle? Yeah. But now obviously I have a definite respect. You know, JG's call or preseason. And I obviously be all go really healthy. That's kind of the most important thing. And I was going to get a lot of healthy going forward. So that's it. Marvin, what are your early impressions of the Rams? What do you think of the Rams? Yeah, I mean, they're a good team. They're good physical team. I got a new lot of new guys up front, I think. That's kind of where the strong suit is. Kind of a little different to Buffalo, come more to a little match coverage. So I'm excited to go against it. Personally, when the belts take taking one of my opportunities, how do you feel today? Wasn't many of them. Wasn't many of them.
So I thought maybe I'm just where you think game versus just playing. Not getting a preseason game. Actually, it was three season. It was definitely, definitely thinking a lot out there. And I think I'll come with reps. I think to think and less, and just going out there and playing, definitely come with reps. And it's something you know I'll get better at. But I think definitely say I was thinking a lot out there. Is there anything you can do to prove that? That's where I'll cover. I think you did it in the past because you're going to face that a lot, obviously. Yeah, I mean, you just got to see you get open for yourself, making yourself available. And when the ball does, can you make it into play? This, the heat is just taking you away. That means other guys are having a chance to get open. So that's how kind of how I look at it. It's no longer since the senior offense. That's the best thing of course. They're continuing with Kylo. Is this something that comes pretty quickly in a new game? Or is this something like that? Hopefully sooner or later, I think. I'll look into you to see. We'll see. I don't think we're in a bad place right now at all. Obviously, I don't really think that. But just a live reps will continue to grow and show.
I think how I believe maybe different than somebody else may have been able to practice at least like the positive, you know what I mean. So, but either energy add, going beyond just though, hyperb, beyond, so that's kind of how the goal of living my whole life on again. I felt team captain like specifically. And I felt I wasn't a captain in high school. Wasn't a captain in college. But I want me to jump across high schools. I feel like I'm not into captain's like it's that I felt. Yeah. But that would be awesome. But, you know, that happens up to great. But not either way, I want to assume the role as a captain from the perspective of guys onto the visual world and to get back to that point. Yeah, I mean, I can't say that. I mean, I guess the biggest thing is that I felt it has felt like how you used to move past.
But it didn't take just the first LTAs and took training left and right once this season and because I didn't know what it was going to be. So, I think a lot of reps just to get back to feeling like myself for the LTAs. And then that whole first week, but now like today specifically, just changing some small things with my feet. That visit, talking about the long coach, got some things I'm doing my feet to get to that to sound a traditional angle that I love to sit on. Thought I felt great already, but I'm okay. I felt even better. I started even more excited tomorrow. Now I'm getting my feet back and how I like the right side and on the left side. So I'm excited. I mean, obviously I feel like in the league, whether you're left or right, you're still going in. Premier guys obviously give high expectations for the LTAs. I like to tackle, but there's definitely a level of energy and like the expectation is definitely taking the human
side because now I can either blind side, as the tackle world. So yeah, I would say in terms of communication as far as this even outside of the facility, and stuff like that, I'd like really creating that. But tackle quarterback, Bonnie the more often feel that I think has been something that's even the cool thing. I got the text one day, because I had, I think you put it left, I was like, you can't do it. You know, yeah, I've been training both. I've been training both. I asked after the season there, like honestly, we'll talk to you in the season, and I just got a text on how to have this with the free agency. Then, so I was like, you know what, I had an O season right tackle. So if I get the word, I'm going to stay in the right tackle. I'll just do what I did before I'm built on that. Plus I was like, I might as well as train the left tackle now, as if I'm going to be left tackle. And I'd rather do that than train on right tackle or the call, hey, you left tackle.
I was like, how do you find the switch on the feet? You know what I mean? So I'm like, let me just prepare an advance. I was like, yeah, it was good. I think occasionally, on third down, there'd be a lot of twists. That was just not like, it's a automatic, it was good to come. And I think that was my mindset for like the first half of the season. Like, I didn't have to go into the game with some pros. Like, oh my gosh, I did that. I kind of figured, okay, like, this is the type of rush. I mean, again, this is how this guy usually rushes. If I get the vibe, this is how the ends, like the rush, you know, tackles that, you know, first of your guys. We got the primary patch on. Already, you know, what it was going to be. Already, you know, we'll be every stud. And honestly, just knowing that's kind of an advantage to, so you're not, you're not, oh, they brought the twist on my side again. It was never airing off, like, like, coming up on my side, three plays in a row. Two minutes, I knew that. It was going to be a lot of, you know what I mean? I'm watching more everybody else, and you rarely, you know, it goes out there occasionally. Third down, I was like, you know, I'm sorry, he's going to pick me.
You know what I mean? So, that effect, it's kind of, it's also kind of an advantage in a way. But it's also exciting, like, okay, I'm going to get the hardest look. You know, those are real, real reps, you know, the things. And really, I went into kind of process. And I was like, hey, when I tell him, he'll let me know about and I'm just going to train it. I was training all left. Toe TAs, I guess if I didn't hear anything about TAs, I would've came in like, so, you know what I mean? Because just like, I'm cool with training both, continue. I would've been cool with training both continually, but I feel like anybody, any position will be like, okay, like, you want as soon as possible to get your feet kind of settled in, your hips settled in, your hands settled in, a certain kind of way. We've been hard of it. You work both very healthy. No, no, no. But they're definitely, but in terms of the development,
it's definitely a lot faster to stay on all the way inside. But I think having that week's that we had the transitional seasons over, I'm like, it was fun. You know, it would, I'm trying to get up with it, I'm going to try to get that week things out of town right now, but when it comes back, I'm going to show them the one house. I've got a house that's not too far from, so I told them, I got that house, like, I got a yellow outside. Have you day? You know what I mean? So, yeah. That's doesn't have any stock or anything. Doesn't mean anything, so we have to play on Friday, and that's really all that matters. We're going to take two more from Zoom before turning it back. I've got first one's going to come from Stephen from Cleveland.com. Go ahead. It's the fun, I'm sorry. Hey, Caleb, we've seen, you were talking about the Ohio State Office the success that they've had.
Obviously, Jeremiah has been a big part of that. What's it been like this year going against him in practice? And, you know, after doing that, does it surprise at all to see him having the success he's had as a freshman? No, it doesn't bring surprises. It was pretty, pretty easy to see the town that he has and the blessings that God has put on his plate. But it's always a challenge going against Jeremiah and the other receivers in Mecca and Karnel in practice. And even guys like Brandon and his impression Rogers, they do a great job bringing looks for the defense and create a lot of obstacles. Our final question from Zoom is going to come from Dan Hope. Go ahead, Dan. Hey, Caleb, you've been had a lot of success against you guys when you played him at Alabama last year. Just what do you remember from going up against him last year and what can you learn from that game? Really smart quarterback knows how to operate their offense, push the ball in the right places. And then Coach Narkeeson does a great job putting him in positions to win.
Jerry, back to you. Yep, thank you, Rob Aller. Columbus, this match, Caleb, JT and Jack Land opposite sides. And they is opposite off the field as they are on in terms of personality and just the people they are. They are offices, but they are also one of the closest people I know they have spent a lot of time together. They have come from different sides of the country so they are different people for sure. But they are both really great people and really great men. I am sorry, I respect both of them. You have the personality. How did you do that? I am not going to do that. I am sorry. I am not going to do that. It is going to be awesome, Warren. Podcast. Throughout the season we will always see you on Wednesday nights you and Nathan would be some of the last people off the field. Are the things that you are working on after a practice always the same? Is it a routine? What are the things that you are hoping to get out of those extra moments after practice?
It is a routine, pretty much, the keys that we need to go into the game with. And then also changes week to week on based on what our jobs are going to put us into doing. So every week we go through the same things and then we add certain things that we do for the team that we play is going to ask us to accommodate. Bill, we are going to win. Columbus Dispatch. Yeah, I already got one here. Oh, OK. Joe and Goplin, Columbus Dispatch. Killvin. When? Texas uses play action and they use play action to clear a bit. What do they do well in those spots and what's the key for you guys in those moments with Quinn? They do a really good job with I Candy. And it creates a lot of challenges for defense in order to see if it's a runner pass and see because that's when they're going to take their shots too as well. So really just having great eye discipline, seeing the line and seeing what it's telling us. So that's just what it does. Deep right, Nick Walker, Letterman Roll. Hey, you guys had a pretty good game
playing for Tyler Warren when you guys played him. You guys have another Texas guy that's going to tie it in and Gunnar Kahnelm. What are you guys going to have to do to limit him and how to what do you think about his game? He's a really good player. He makes a lot of plays and he has a lot of receiving yards this year. So really just do the same thing we've done all year. Just be disciplined in our responsibilities. And if you're on them, you've got to make the play when it comes. Right, one of the mandrel dealers. Cleveland.com. When you look at their receivers, it's kind of a whole, they spread the ball around. It seems like a lot of what stands out about the way that they can spread the ball around with different guys. A lot of really good athletes. I played with Isaiah Bond Lasser, who's a really great receiver, a lot of speed. And then all their receivers have made a lot of plays. So everybody has to go on the peasy and cues if we're going to stop them and have a do a really good job. Front row here, 10 May, Letterman Roll. Yeah, Kale, but you moved up here. I don't have to tell you when you moved it
basically a year ago. And so it was a little bit of a leap of faith because you know how many athletes are on this team, good athletes and stuff. But when did you really feel this defense come into its own? And then past that, man, watching in the Rose Bowl, you're recognition of what was coming seemed to be on point. Did it feel like that? I mean, you personally. I think the defense has played really well throughout the season. I think we've had games where we've played better and games where we haven't put it all together. But I think that's how all defenses are. So I can't say there's a certain moment where I think we put it together. But what's your second part of your question? You seem really on point against Oregon about recognizing what was coming. I mean, you were really active out there directing and things like that. Did it feel like that, I guess? I feel like, as Luke said earlier, the preparation that we put in goes into that and just feeling comfortable and what we're doing, comfortable and what we're seeing with the other teams.
I feel like that allows us to play fast and can me and Laketon to communicate to everybody else. Did I miss anyone's questions here? Steve, how long have you been playing in sports? Yeah, Caleb. You came to Ohio State to play for National Championship. And there were a lot of ups and downs throughout the season. Just to be in this position, the last four teams still live. Just you feel validated by that. And did you always have faith that this is how it was going to turn out? I came to Ohio State to become a better player and to help the team be as good as it can be, not to win a National Championship. Like that wasn't the only goal for me coming here. Really just wanted to be in the team and be with the brotherhood. But it's a great feeling being in the final four and being with the team and everything that comes with that. But it's a blessing to be here. And one final question, Bill, where Ben wants to play this back? Yeah, I did want to follow up. When I talked to you at that time of the game, you said when they scored their first and second touchdown, you were really hot on the sidelines.
What was your message to the team? And that's a good offense. They're going to score against most people. Why were you so hot? Really just because we didn't execute, which left them scored. So we've done that a lot, which is something we can't do. In these big games and these games where it's when they go home. So we got to make the plays when they come. And we got our competitive excellence as Coach Dases make the play where your number's called. Caleb, thank you very much. Come on. I feel like they're definitely picking up quick. I mean, I was in their shoes one time, and I had Zach Harrison, Javonte, and Tyler Frydell in front of me. So I feel like I'm just trying to be one of those peers that they work for me and kind of just giving them the steps to get there. And I feel like they're definitely picking up quick. And they're definitely going to be one of great rushmen. So we coached that to the side as well. JT and Jack probably didn't need a ton of big spirit. So maybe that's the real opportunity for me of doing that. Is there a difference in the workload that you've been getting through the half of camp with the last couple?
I feel like all the camps I've definitely gotten a big course learned. And I love that. So I asked Coach J4, I love getting more reps, because I just like protecting my craft. So I mean, some people may not need it. Some of those people need it. But I mean, I just like to give me a rep. I mean, what do you think is the speed on that course that you can go down right now? I mean, for me, it's always just kind of getting my little details perfectly, like my steps, my footing, kind of just perfecting my toolbox is what we call it, my craft, and just trying to be a, it's like a win-ever every place we try to do. We're in two different big sets. So I'm going to try to do a little bit more. You see what I'm going to say about it? Yeah, I'm definitely just getting stronger faster, everything all they've got. But one of my big things is being a leader. And kind of just not trying to look, still look up to Jack and JT and kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into it. So I feel like you kind of have a lot of leaders on the B-line at the B-In position. So we kind of all kind of just kind of talk to children and kind of stuff. Is that been a tough time?
I'm just really curious. I hope that I've talked to you guys playing with them all the time. And being on the team and just trying to get them to know and try to get them to know what they're doing. But you need to know what those guys are. I'm really competitive. And we love it. We all competitive people. We all love to fish together. And I feel like the springing of that side of all this, we're all just kind of bouncing off each other and seeing what one person does. And to kind of build it into our toolbox. And we all kind of just kind of build one great thing. Hey, do you remember when I last year when you got the shot of the full back in the vlog? And did they approach you with that idea and you could have stayed on my habit of getting to the back? Because you heard Jack's higher slot being. Oh, yeah. You could have touched that. So I definitely did it in high school. I was full back in a little bit tidied in. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there. And Coach Wilson, honestly, he left watching it too. He left. And he played that seed in Coach Day's head and Coach Day kind of just went for it. And I tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that continuing now? I mean, I'm just doing anything in the spring.
New playbook. I did not know you hadn't got that far. Yeah, you haven't got that. How toposet is there? Yeah, look at that. I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field. You need me too. Just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and I'll try to do my best for you. Kit-Jack, you're the same thing. Oh, yeah. And don't laugh. Roughly, that's why. Kids is talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of saw you and got out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just got to win into those from your perspective. And how did that help you move you good? The right mindset I guess came into this question. Definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened. And they don't know everything that goes into it, how long the season is now, what you got to do to prepare for and what's happening all that time from here to then. So I feel like we definitely just coached in. We kind of connected. And maybe we kind of just talked man-to-man and he kind of just sent straight to me. And I feel like we kind of both have been on the same.
And we know we're making it. We make each other better every day. We got the four best D-ins. Five best D-ins, honestly. And then coach football. And we're going to be one of the best D-lines in coach football. How do you feel like a better player today than you were in this season? I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team. And kind of bring people in and feel like we're kind of helping out more. How do you record your head around the past at the time with TKFC? ZXL? I mean, it sounds bizarre, but I mean, the season goes by so fast already. So when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like, wow, it's already week 10. So now it's kind of, it gives you more time to kind of enjoy it. You kind of savor it because you've come already in here for a really freshness place. It's crazy. It's here once been on your powder for the first month of the year, right? I mean, there is that pace yourself that. I mean, there is a mindset that I did in the season. Yeah, definitely. Definitely going to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices.
How much has Larry talked to you guys around the game? Last question right here. K-16, 2017, 4 NFL D-French Awards, all in season. How much does he talk to that guy? I mean, he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become. So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time. And God wanted us to be here. And He knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals. And we come together at something special. Doing it, what were the deliberations? I'm surprised it's even a conversation. Like, it should always be live. Let's tell you. Tell you, tell you play football. So obviously there's a proximity to the season, which is a little reckless, I understand that. But in spring, when you're competing for jobs, I mean, if I'm a quarterback, I'm messing be live. So I can show him how I'm different than, you know, anyone that can't be live. You know what I mean? You're always trying to find an edge.
And if you're never fully alive, I don't think you fully give guys opportunity to be who they want to be or who they can be. So that being said, I will cast my vote, but that will not be my final decision on that. But I will cast my vote. The guy's a hound at well. It was good for all parties involved. And more we can do that, the better, but I'm sure that is coming to a close here very quickly. So. That would be 24. Right. General Maya off the field, we saw after practice on this Saturday, the mob that came to autograph some things. When you're working with him on all these things you're talking about, but also dealing with the life of being one of the biggest names in college football, how do you help mentor him in that past? Yeah, I mean, it's a blessing to be in a position where you can provide insight or I wouldn't say recommendations, but just give perspective.
How he chooses to receive the perspective or not one or not, he always does, which is fine. But to be in that position is really humbling. That being said, he does a really good job on his own. He doesn't need to check down too much. He's really done a great job. Again, the way he was raised and his morals and humble would always sign and taking pictures. I'm always trying to be the bad guy for him because he's not going to be and just says again more about his character. But he's not the only guy. Any guy would kind of do that. We have a group full of awesome young guys, but General Maya has done a great job with it, handling it and it's definitely growing at an exponential rate to say the least. But I think he's built for it and he's been handled at a high level. But those around him were trying to help him out a little bit. What made Quincy the first freshman to do this black track this year? Uh-huh. Yeah, I mean, that's a good question.
I think that, you know, frankly, you know, I don't, I'm not really fully evolved about that. So that can be, but I wasn't. You know, I think that people on the outside, whether it be defense or even coach day or anybody brought it to my attention, you know, we're kind of just going about practice and that's our expectation to make plays, not make mistakes. And he was starting to make a lot of a lot of plays consistently. I think the consistent level that he's been as a person, being on, being on time and doing his job description on each play and the ball is going in your way and making some big plays. And, you know, it starts, it starts being seen by your peers. And your peers are asking for it. They start barking, getting a stripe off all those kind of things. That's the ultimate sign of respect, I think, with your peers, you know, go to your bat. He's not going for his bat. No one, people are bringing it to your position coach. I think it speaks volumes of the general respect that you're earning through the process. So I think it's something like that happened.
And, you know, as well as they're based on his peers and other coaches. Steve, on creation. Cleveland.com. Ryan Day was talking about how impressed he's been this spring with Austin Sarovale. That he's been able to do and Tyler Bohn was talking last week about the importance of the cross-training and all that that goes into that. Just how much have you seen Austin benefit from this spring and everywhere that he's been and helping with peace, do you think he's going to be regardless of where he fits on his offensive line? Yeah, I think Austin's been awesome. I mean, he literally, I mean, you know, what was they say? He played every spot, every position. We just move around, you know, and handles it. And, you know, he's one of those guys I feel like he watched film over and over again day after day. And his name never really gets brought up, you know, in a good way. Like, you know, the old line, your name gets brought up when, usually not going as well, you know, I mean, they're literally at the point of the attack on every single play. So there's nowhere to hide. And so, but Austin, when his name gets brought up, he's like, man, that was a good job. A good job, pass off that combo. Whatever, it's always positive. And they're really impressed with him.
He started in the winter. They did a great job through the winter. Again, continue to build their respective peers. And then he's going to a good job, really good job just being a very consistent through spring. Are you Jeff Gilbert, press pros? Brian, since you've been working more with the whole offense, when it comes to quarterback play, what has grown in your, I don't know, appreciation of that position and what those guys have to do and go through? What do you think more about those guys versus maybe what you thought before is just a wide receiver guy? Yeah, I mean, I mean, there's no disillaterally a receiver guy. If you are just a wide receiver guy, you won't be a very later on. It's all about quarterback play, you know? So I think in that same world, though, to the point is that, you know, in order to be a great receiver or a great receiver guy, whatever you want to call it, there's only one page, just the quarterbacks page. So everything is based off them. They're, whether it be their progression, their timing, the stresses they have is what we're trying to minimize.
So if you don't fully understand the quarterback play, it's hard to maximize receiver play, I think, you know, that being said, yeah, I'm still always learning. You know, I think that I can't say anything's jumped out massively right now, but I would say that, you know, I guess I would say that the preparation level, I mean, what is required to execute and play at a high level, it's just not capable in the a lot of time, right? I mean, there's only so much time where I'd be with players. If you're not willing to spend, you know, your own time getting prepared for practice, to be to maximize one's ability, there's a good chance you're not going to maximize your ability. So, you know, other positions, I mean, online, same thing, I mean, receiver play sometimes can, you know, get away from it. We do a great job studying and being in the room extra for sure, but the requirement of a quarterback to know the fixed protections, the BR run game coordinator based on the calls, you know, to get us in different checks.
I mean, there's so much they need to know. And frankly, the, you know, the online is as good as the quarterback, the receiver's line is good as the quarterback, the offense is the line is good as the quarterback. And it's our responsibility to put guys in position to maximize with their capable of maximizing, but their inability to notice that they need to spend extra time outside the a lot of time, I think is critical. And the amount that it takes, I guess that's maybe a little naive too, but the guys are doing a great job doing it. Just a couple more coaches got a meeting, Rob Aller, Columbus Dispatch. Brian, you guys reached the mount top, you got a banner out there, national champs. I think you keep these guys grounded, being in the moment, looking ahead, not back. Are you tougher on them? Because? No, I think that. I mean, I think we have a lot of guys, you know what? I think it's understanding that we were trying to build the map to get to where you wanted to get to, but now that we have the map, doesn't mean we've traveled the path.
So like we know what it looks like, the guys that are here know what it's supposed to look like. The guys before us, say unbelievable example, how to get to where you want to get to. So the focus is on trying to replicate what they just did and how they operated. Can't say we've done that right now. So it's very easy to stay motivating because they already know it's not good enough, frankly. And so the last thing they want to do is put in a ton of effort and then not reach their goals. So motivation, I don't think is needed. I think there is a catching up of those and maybe aren't quite sure what it takes, you know, but overall motivation is not what we've needed. Clarity of message is definitely what we've been focused on and I think the message is being received. Not concerned about motivation and looking back, if you will. I think everyone's pretty focused on being forward and knowing we haven't accomplished anything. Steve, please. Who would you say is the leader of your wide receiver right now?
I would say Colonel Tate, Brennan Innis, probably done the most outspoken, you know, in the room. Yeah, I would say they're doing a good job. Those are probably the two guys that would jump out of my room. Yep. Brennan, he's been in the vocal. Obviously, Colonel taking on that role more and being more vocal. He's in the vocal part of the center. He's the only other thing that that process for heaven, becoming a more vocal leader, took for you to say that upon him. What's the question? Colonel, what have you seen like the growth of a part of it? Yeah, I mean, he's, I think he's pulled guys aside. You know, it had one-on-one conversations with him. He's locked in, you know, just, I think he saw the impact that I met him made in the role he played. And to think that we're going to lose that and then be a better group, part of it doesn't mathematically make sense to him. So someone's got to set up in that role. And one, I don't know what respect, so I'm two, he knows he's capable of it. And it's just the desire and the appreciation, I think, to be at the older table now, the
older head. And appreciate the way I met him probably went about his business. And so he probably valued that, appreciated that. And he's just being assured we still have that. Final question, Bill Rebellt, what's the bonus this time? Could you assess the running back room? I think it's pretty much assumed. Both those running backs, C.J. and, and, and James, I think that tandem system is probably the way you've got to go again. How do you think it's working? And you see third and maybe fourth guys up in the mirror. I think that, you know, college football, NFL football, any football really, you've got to have depth in the running back room. I think that it's very apparent in the NFL, it's usually a two back system, you know, very rarely is it one guy. But in college, I think we saw the benefit of that last year. The ability to compliment each other is really important. And the ability for us to identify what they do great and put them in good positions to be what they are. And what they're best at, I should say, is really important as a coaching staff. It's been very impressed with even the younger guys, Sam and, and, and, and, and, and the way
they've come along, consistency, so what you're chasing, right, you're always able to. That's why you're here. But how often you do it ultimately dictates how much you play. So, but overall, I think locksmen on them, they'd understand the standard and, and pass pro and not being a guy we got to sell them out because you can't pass, protect. So we were blessed, especially with Trey last year and, and Quinshaw. But no, these guys are done a good job. They're competing. They've been very coachable. No, it's very, it's, it's shown a blog on film. But yeah, I mean, it's always hard on backs. I mean, every opportunity you get to go live and, and break tackles really gives you the most feedback on what these guys are capable of. If you're just playing tag out there, you never get any art. At least you shouldn't. But the running backs, you know, on contact days, I've done a good job. James has done a really good job growing, really excited about him. Everyone's really excited about him and CJ. So, you know, I think ultimately, you know, how group the, how will, how good will the
group be? It's probably based on, you know, the top, the bottom rising, right? I mean, you're gonna have some guys at the top, but, you know, where's the floor? And so I think, uh, uh, Bow and Sam has done a really good job and many, some more guys to get healthy, and more, more guys on campus, but, uh, very encouraged. And you saw him improve. And then, um, McLean, I think, is a, is a great plus. I mean, he is a guy that has football intelligence. He's picked it up. You know, he's kind of of those incoming freshmen who still should be in high school. He's a guy, I think you're gonna point to, and you can see right now he's gonna be a player. Over to the right, Austin Ward, the podcast. What was a healthy Mitchell Melton? How does he fit in for your defense? What does he bring to it? Yeah, he's, you know, Mitch is that combination player, you know, in, um, in our four down, um, you know, he's a guy that can do a lot of things, uh, drop, fold in there and make
plays. You, you see some of that all the time. Really athletic, um, you know, we're kind of loaded at that end position. So he's gonna play there. You know, like I said last year, we, we haven't needed it, but he's a guy you would point to along with CJ Hicks, you know, for the, for the long season, um, people get injured. You get a little light inside. It's always hard on the defensive tackles. But if you're gonna play with, uh, three ends, you know, that, Mitch is a guy who definitely can do all that. He has that. Over to the left, Joey Kaufman, Columbus Dispatch. Jim, you've talked about this before, but I think in past years where you're going up against, uh, really talented receiver group offense to encourage your players to, uh, it's not okay if they give up to the play and to go nearly almost the first half today where you, the offense didn't get them the end zone until the late in the second half. Just, and you guys have guys down the second area. Just what, what did you think of that sort of trend and how it's evolved in the way you
guys almost shut them out of the first half? Yeah, I think it's become, um, you know, an expectation now, um, you know, our DBs, you know, our BIA, Best in America, we led the country in past defense, right? I think it was 96, what I, uh, what I got here and it was number one last year. So they've, they've taken that spirit. So it's a competitive spirit. It's an expectation now. It doesn't matter who we're going against. It's, it's, they view it as a standard. So that was good to see in the first, first half. Over to the right Spencer Holbrook, Vladimir and Ro. Jim, we've talked about safety changing the way that you play defense in the Leo and the linebackers, but how much does having the depth that you guys have at defensive tackle change the way that you can do things defensively? Yeah, I mean, you're going to play to your strengths, you know, and, uh, that's, that's my job. So it's just to, what do we have and what do we do best? And when you have defensive tackles, um, and I've said it before, it helped our defense
so much last year, when you have defensive tackles that actually make tackles, which is what we have right now. It changes the way you call a game, you know, it certainly helps you be, um, in better shape on explosive plays on the back end. You don't have to do a whole lot to help those guys out because they're making tackles. So you got to go, you got to go with that, you know, you got to, you got to let those guys play and, and they're good. So, um, you can't get too far away from the scheme of having those defensive tackles make place because they're doing it and it works. Over to the left, Tony Gurdman, Buckeye Huddl. Jim Ryan talked about the quarterback run being more of a thing with the offense this year. During the season, how much of, when you're facing a team like that, how much does that impact your day to day throughout the week preparing for that? Yeah, it's a ton, you know, it, I think it changes everything you do on defense. You see it everywhere from the NFL on down if you have a quarterback who can make plays with his feet.
Your scheme better be designed that, you know, to, to take that away into account for it. So it changes the way you look at everything when you're game planning. Thank you, Donovan. Over here to the right, uh, Tim May, the Tim May podcast. Jim, you might be the interviewer when I asked, uh, Ryan about just, for example, Calvin Simpson Hunt, but the, uh, corner seemed to be playing almost with the chip owner shoulder to a certain extent. I mean, David's and Nick Benosin took the day personally. It looked like, you know, to me, because some of the hype going into the game, but what, what do you see from that group in particular that, uh, who is you going into this off season? Yeah, when you can, when you have corners that you can count on, again, it's just like having defensive tackles in the run game when you have corners you can count on that are going to compete all the time, no matter what the situation is. And we've developed that again, it changes the way you call the entire game. I mean, you, you're able to leave those guys on an island. Um, you're able to switch out converges and, and they know what they're doing and they
take great pride in it. So, um, having those guys out there in the development, it's a big deal. It really is. And it's not just a picture of the board. I was just giving it like, I'm giving it like, yeah. I mean, he's, he did come in late and, you know, um, he compete, he's one of those guys that just competes every day, doesn't say much, you know, he's trying to live up to the standard or the other guys and you, you see him coming along, you know, you see him step by step coming along and, and, you know, put him in a, you know, competitive atmosphere or same step up, that's a great sign. And final question for coach Knowles, Dan Hope, 11 Warriors. You mentioned CJ Hicks a few minutes ago. Have you seen him take the strides you need to see the spring to trust him as a guy who could be a potential starter on his defense? Yes, I mean, uh, I think CJ has shown that, uh, he has talent and, uh, I think it's my job to put him in the best situations for him because he can be a force, um, you know,
he's much better when he's bloodsing or he's directed because he's able to use his athletic ability, but he has certainly shown that he's going to be able to help this defense coach. Thank you very much for your time. All right. And, uh, we will bring, uh, offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Chip Kelly to the podium now. We'll open up the questions over to the left Bill Rebenowitz Columbus dispatch. At Chip, um, what are your just general impressions of the offense coming out of spring, especially at quarterback? We'll look at all 15. So I think, you know, uh, this day is, is a big part of it, you know, because it was the first time they were going to play some of those guys that were going to play in front of a crowd. And it was an amazing crowd. You know, you get 80,000 first spring game. Now, you could see some of the young guys kind of looking around like, wow, this is different in the indoor. Um, but that's what they have to get ready to play it. So, um, we got better from practice one to practice 15, you know, it's still an evaluation through the whole process, but, um, it's not something in the players, though, too, that
we'll, we'll not make any decision walking off the field today saying, hey, this is the direction that we're going in. We'll, we'll be very authentic and, and look through everything and make sure that we get a really good feel for what it all looks like and then who will best move this offense. That's what our decision is going to be. So, I do. I think we got a lot of guys there. Um, that part's tough. I think because you got it, you, there's guys that deserve reps, you know, and they're all competing for it. So, you know, sometimes you'd like to be sometimes when you had a guy who was in the initial start of well, he's going to get the bulk of the reps to get them better, but, um, they capitalize on it. We really rolled them, you know, if you were at some of our spring practices, you're watching all those guys rotate and rotate out. Um, and as we talk about all the time, you know, the old adage is, is don't count your reps, make your reps count. You know, and we'll put it all together and really come up with, you know, which guy do we really feel is going to make, going to help us move this offensively. Over to the far right, Bill Landis, the podcast, Kings of the North. Hey, Chip, um, you said when we first talked to you that the, the basis of a lot of your success running the football just kind of figuring out what your guys do best and then leading into that over 15 practices now.
How good of a field do you think you have for that? And then what did the next few months look like as you try to piece that all together? Really good question. Um, it's, it's interesting because the one thing that I think sometimes makes tough and an evaluation is what a good front we want to get. Um, you know, so for 15 practices, those guys on the other side of the ball were pain, you know, Jack and JT and Tileek and those guys. But I know come fall, there's not going to be anybody more happy that we have those guys on the defensive side of the ball because of what they can do. So, um, I still think we'll have to really evaluate that, what we're good at, what we're not, what we got to get better at and what we got to work on. I think the work we got against such a quality defense was, uh, was really key for us. Over to the far left, Nathan Baird, Cleveland dot com. So, a year ago at this time, um, it came out of the spring with still a lot of question marks about the offensive line. Um, and even I guess that last season came out with question marks. What have you seen that progress in the time that you've been here and what's your confidence level that that offensive line is going to allow this offense to do, everything it wants
to do this fall? Yeah, I mean, I've been here short amount of time. I don't know. I really don't have anything to compare it to. So, I kind of tab you the rassa, come in with a blank slate and just observe it. I think we're really athletic. Um, I think Donnie and, and, and Seth and those guys inside are really smart and really intelligent. Um, they allow you to, to be able to make adjustments in game. Um, just tucking football with some of those guys. It's like, well, these, these guys are wired the right way and a lot of those guys have played a lot of football. So, um, they can bank on their experience there. I think we, we've got about four guys that have played significant amount of snaps and we've got to make sure we can find out who the fifth guy is. Um, but that's similar to where the quarterback spot is, I think. And I also think in the offensive line, you, you're not going to play a 16-17 game season and just play with five guys. You know, you really have to develop your depth there. Um, there's going to be a number two center that's going to play a lot of football. There's going to be a number two guard, whether it's on either side of the ball, there's going to be a third tackle. I think you, you're going to get tested, especially with this new, in this new playoff format, you really have to think that way. So, you know, you're not looking for five starters, you're really looking for 10 starters
because you're going to have to, you're going to have to probably play 10 guys to get one to get through a 16-17 game season. Over to the right, Austin Ward, the podcast. Chip, I think it was the first play of the game, the T-Formation and then the reverse, I don't know, spin move with Will Howard, I don't know. What's the inspiration for that package and that sort of, uh, Rinker with the quarterback? Mr. Hayes. Do you have, uh, there's a looming figure around this whole program. You know, we get to go to work every day and then Will Howard Hayes Athletics Center. So, um, it was good enough for Woody. We're going to stay there. We, we're going to do it. We ran some last year. I think we took 21 snaps at UCLA and T, we've got a short yardage formation for us and we've done some different things with it. But, um, I also, I think our players had a lot of fun, you know, practicing that and doing some different things. So, um, it's a small part of our offense, you know, we will not be in the T 21 times in one game. But, you know, we may get in in some short yardage situations. And I think it's come back. There's a lot of schools right now that, um, are starting to do that. You know, it's really just, you're trying to, you know, you got a half a yard to get, you
know, you're trying to get your big guys in the game. And I think we use three tight ends and two running backs in our formation today with Packard being the, the full back in that situation. So, um, there's a lot of different things you can do in short yardage, but, um, a little bit of a tribute to Coach Hayes and, and, and what he means to this program. Joey Kaufman, Columbus Dispatch, over to the left. Chip, did you look back now, even your two months, 15 spring practices? Is there something you feel best about what you've been able to accomplish with this offense? Well, I haven't accomplished anything because I didn't take a snap, but, um, I think the most impressive thing since I've been here is how close, close this football team is. You know, some programs talk about a brotherhood. This is really a brotherhood, um, our practices, as we talked about, how good our defense is. It's highly competitive, but they're not combative. And, and those guys really work very, very well together, both the whole line of the D line, the secondary and the receivers. Um, the competition is the, but it's gotta be the best there is in the country, you know, and, and that makes you better. But I think sometimes competition, you know, guys can lash out and it gets really combative
and then all of a sudden the fight breaks out and the fight breaks out and, and we're trying to accomplish and get footballed on them. But I think the way these guys cooperating work together as a group, um, as a special bond. And I think that's what you're gonna need the, the, the closest team and the most connected teams on the ones that win. Over to the right here. Andy Baxter, Letterman, Ro. Chip, obviously there's been a lot of talk about Jeremiah, but Ameca is the big return in this group. He kind of reminded everyone what he can do today. What's it been like working with him and what kind of weapon can he be for you guys? No good point. And Ameca has reminded me and the other 14 practice sessions of what he can do. Special player, you know, and, and, and JJ's a really talented player also. You know, I think I think all of the, the whole group, like Carl Tate did some really good things watching him this spring. And for all of them, you know, I mentioned it with the offensive line. I, I came in with a blank slate and I had no opinions formed. Not that really just wide eyeed and just observed them, but, you know, that, I think that wide receiver is really special. And I, I think there's a bunch of guys in there. And again, you have to play multiple, multiple games after the regular season is over.
You're gonna make sure you're gonna need depth like that. And the fact that it's, you feel a little bit comfortable right now that we got some guys there that can make some plays on the perimeter. And that really dictates how people are gonna defend you, you know, so you got a couple of really good running back, you know, so really gonna load the box. Are you really gonna load the box and leave those guys in one on one coverage? Well, then it's the quarterback's responsibility to decipher that and get the ball of those guys. So, or do they at least a double coverage? They list a double coverage and now it's a little bit lighter box and you can run the ball. Having too many weapons is a good problem to have. Second roll left, Pat Murphy, 24-7 sports. Chip, we've talked a lot about kind of the quarterbacks maybe vying for the starting swap. But some of the younger guys, what have you seen from them? We got an opportunity to see more of them today than we probably have. What's your assessment of them as they kind of get in this? I always am so impressed with young guys that enroll early in watching how they get acclimated and what they do. You know, when you look at Julian and Ayr and JJ, you know, they should be in the hot
lunch line of their high school and they're out here playing in front of 80,000 people. And they've really progressed when you watch them in meetings and listen to them and they interpret, you know, so basically the whole concept here is we throw them in the deep end and see if they can swim. You know, this, we didn't baby anything. We don't put the install in with, hey, you guys are in, we're in install. We're in the old players and then you guys, you know, go sit at the kitty table and we're just going to do the really simple things with you. You know, they get it all in the more they can digest the more when you're in a room, when you're checking for understanding and asking questions and they can spit back to you the more confidence you have when they get in there with the plays that you can call for them. So those guys have been impressive. They're still learning, you know, they were the guys today that were kind of looking around and saying, wow, there's like 80,000 people here. I went with the offensive coordinator in the quarterback coach because I was kind of looking around because I had actually never been in the stadium until yesterday when we had our 14th practice in there. So I played Ohio State once when I was at Oregon, but that was in the Rose Bulls High
and never been actually in the stadium until yesterday. So I caught myself when I went into the stadium today looking around saying 80,000 for a spring game. That's impressive. Got time for just a few more folks over here to the right Dylan Davis Delaware Gazette. What's your going to let you just set about throwing them into the deep end? What stood out the most about Julian's progression through 15 practices and where he is that you guys head out of spring? Julian is a very fast processor. You know, he really thinks very, very quickly on his feet. He makes really quick decisions. He doesn't stick on and read. He can progress in any season. He's really well for a young player, you know, in not having been exposed to a lot of college defenses and especially what Jim does. Jim can make a young freshman quarterback cry with some of the stuff he does. But I never saw that with Jules. And that's been in press of his ability to retain him and JJ. The compliment I would say to him is if you got here and you didn't know what class
they were and you wouldn't say that those guys were freshmen in terms of how they've picked things up. Sometimes freshmen, they're freshmen. But the guys who are special, they don't act like freshmen. They act like football players and those are two guys that are examples of that. Far left. Cameron T. Robinson, the athletic. On the topic of freshmen, James Peebles and Sam got on the second half. You talk about how deep you need to be in this era of college football. But as you search for RB3, what did you see from them today and what has their growth been like in this spring? James really flashed early for me, not knowing again. It's just a don't worry about what the background is, where they're from, who they are. The this guy of this stars, this guy of that stars, they're all bakais. And there's how they do it. I think James has got really good feel and vision. He can hit things. I thought Sam did some really good things today. TC is another guy who really came along during the spring. And we're constantly talking in our staff meetings about depth.
We're very cognizant of the fact that the playoff situation has changed. So you have to develop that depth. You know, used to be maybe have a parent of spare is what everybody says. But I think you may have to have more than that. You're talking about 16, 17 games. You're really going to be tested that way. So I was really happy with how those young guys have come along here in the 15 training sessions that we've had. Oh, here to the right. Tim May, the Tim May podcast. Thank you, Jerry. You have your own podcast? Yeah. These guys all had like a name next to their. You're a name. Let me show. Okay. That's pretty cool. You must have some juice if you got your name in your podcast. Definitely. Okay. By the way, it's not just the lunch last, the hot lunch last, last. Yeah, it's a hot lunch line. Just two quickies. Number one, do you feel compelled to let these quarterbacks know where they stand? You know, it's coming up Tuesday. You know, to me, they're, you know, where does that go? I mean, in your mind. Yeah, we're all sit down as a staff and visit me on it and then nine. Maybe he does an unbelievable job of, I think, all our players understand where they
fit and what, what the picture is. And we'll give them our assessment. This isn't, you know, we're not going to come back. And but we do it after every day. They know where they stood after practice. One, after two, after three, after four, we grade everything. They're getting constant feedback in terms of where we are. And then after 15, which we had today, but, but we can't do it unless you watch the film and can, can really look at the, the things. Because you may see something, but you're on the sideline. You know, why did he make that decision? Well, I couldn't really see the field safety from where he was. Okay, now I understand why you made that decision. So, you know, what, what, what, what, what meetings with all our players? And that's, that's always been the method. So this week during, you know, between Monday through Friday, we're all scheduled. No one's going on the road to recruiting until after that. But we're all applying meetings at every position. You know, offensive line, defensive line, linebacker safety is everybody. Everybody's going to sit down with their position coaches and know where they, they fit and we see them. But do you feel a pressure with, with the transfer portal looming? I mean, you've been a head coach for a long time. I mean, is that on your mind at TSD? Yeah, I think it's all through.
Or what you got. I'm 100% and I don't think it's pressure. But I think you just open lines of communication and everybody knows, you know, which, what your evaluation was through the training sessions that we have. Guys, we got to have, we got real quick. God, last two questions, Dan Hope and then Rob Aller. Feel like you need to have a starting quarterback named by and whatever the biggest things you're going to be looking for between now and then and determining who that guy's going to be. Well, between now and whatever, then is we're not allowed as coaches to go back out and practice with him. You know, in college football, you get 15 training sessions in the, in the off season. And then they'll go back to work and with Mick in the, in the weight room and getting bigger, getting faster, getting stronger. They'll have organized activities themselves. And they, they do a really good job of that. But once there's a football out, like we're not allowed to be there to evaluate and even assess. So they're really, from a football standpoint, on their own until August. So you always want to do it earlier.
But I also believe every time I've, I've been involved in this is that it kind of happens organically and authentically, you know, because the players know. And if you say, we decided we're going to be with Joe and they all think it's Tim, you know, they know, they're in the locker room with him every day. There's, players understand, you know, who they'd feel is the guy. And, and most of the time it, the decision is very obvious, you know, when you just say, hey, this is where we are with it, you know. But there's that timetable thing. I don't, I don't, I can't give you an exact timetable on that. So Rob, Chip, you talk about Julian, but typically in your experience, you've done it again, like Tim said a long time. How long does it take for the game to slow down for a, for a young QB? I think it depends on the individual, you know, I've had some kids, um, we're early, you know, you're like, wow, Marcus Murray, I was like that. Remember vividly second practice and he got to the fifth reading, the progression that
went through it out here in this big game. And I asked him why I do it all. I asked why, because I just want to understand it. And I said, why did you do that? And he goes, I don't know what we call that defense, but there was like a lot of guys over there. And they didn't seem like there was anybody over there. But for him to process it that far, and he was right. And he came back the other day, whether that was cover 60 other day coach, I learned what you guys call the coverages. But it all happens differently. I've got guys that for two years seem like they're just, you know, they're really struggling. And then the light bulb goes off and you know, whoa, like they got it. So everybody has different learning styles, you know, our job in the evaluation process is to identify those learning styles. So, you know, they cognitively learn early and auditory learner, you know, do they learn by feel? Is it more a feel guy, you know, a more film guy, you know, it's all different. And I think we have to keep poking and prodding. And for us as coaches, that's the challenge too, is what is their best learning style? And how can we convey it? Because education basically is just a transportation knowledge.
But it really doesn't matter what I know or what I know, it doesn't matter what they know. So, that's always kind of what we're working on and studying and thinking about and kind of where we are and how much can they handle. And then how much is too much, you know, because this may be a great play. I agree 100%. But if you don't feel it's a good play, then why is it in? You know, I mean, and that's this whole feeling of process that we're all, they're learning awesome, we're learning them. So, I have identities, so do coaches really? Running quarterbacks. Is that something you've always sort of leaned toward or is it year by year, case by case? What advantages do you like about it? Because all your guys can run a little bit. Yeah, I think a running quarterback causes problems for your defense. So when plays break down, the unscheduled plays, you know, if you just go back to the recent Super Bowl, on that last drive, the two big plays were Mahomes Run. The Petra Mahomes is not a runner.
Andy's not calling design quarterback runs for Pat. But when the defense matches up and plays two men and turns their back to the quarterback, well, maybe the best decision is to take off. You know, the second one he took out, I'm like, he may score. You know, a lot of guys go and they want a hook side, you know, and there's times where you have to understand if you do have a running quarterback, if we talk about the best ability is availability, you know, you're not lowering your shoulder and taking people on, but we are always looking for quarterbacks that have the ability to run. We're not looking for running backs that can throw, you know, so you're not going to see us 20 times a game, we're running the quarterback. There are people that run offensive styles and are really successful with it, but with this group we have right now, that's not. Now they can hurt you with the feet. We'll did it when he was at K State, you know, obviously Devon took off a couple times today, Eric took off a couple times today. Lincoln's a really, really good athlete. Julian can run, but, you know, we're not calling design quarterback runs, you know, you're not going to see, you know, a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Hayes and the legacy that he left here. The straight T is about as far as we go.
We are not going single wing. So we are not going to snap it and run quarterback ice on quarterback power. But it is another weapon, you know, and it also keeps defense as honest. You know, if your defense event is going to continue to bend from the quarterback, he's on the edge and he's getting in first downs. Well, then the defensive end has to stay outside and contain the quarterback. Well, then we can run the ball up and hand the ball off. Sometimes in our running game, our quarterback really is a blocker. He's responsible for a defender if the defender was cheating and fitting it on the run. Well, then his responsibility is to make the defense be honest. And that's really, Eric did that a couple times today. We had a block that safety was sticking his face in there. So we took off from the edge. What happens in next play, the defense is wider. Then what do we get to do? We got to get a chance to hand the ball off to the running game. Great. Coach, thank you so much for your time and thank you for being a buck eye. All right. Thanks. It was definitely addressed here, you know, this pretty seizing. I think Austin Saribel stepped up in a big way, you know, with Donnie being out. And then, you know, you know, Carson can play both guard and center, which is good.
And, you know, we've actually, you know, said it's done a nice job as well. But it was good to see Austin, you know, he moved from guard to tackle a couple times. And even with the ones he was in there battling his tail off. So I think we have built some depth there. But again, you know, we got to go play some games and see what we got. Rob Aller. I'm what's the main thing you want to see out of the old line? Are you coming to see us last year? Yeah, you know, again, whether it's whatever happened last year or last year. But I know that the message to our offensive line is we want to play. We want to be the hardest playing offense line in the country. Now, we've got to play with technique. But at the end of the play, like knock the line of scrimmage back and play with your hair on fire. It's hard as you possibly can. There's a lot to go with the playing in the offensive line. It's all the communication is a lot of things that have to get into place. I think Seth has done a nice job of communicating and understands the offense better now. He takes control up front and brings everybody together, which is great. But to me, like, that's it. Now, we could list a bunch of other things. But to me, we've got to move the line of scrimmage. We've got to be just playing with our hair on fire and knocking people back and playing physical.
And that's the start to game. That's the end of the game. This is a destination spot for privacy. Where you can go or what that really means. Maybe not for online. You see that definitely and how do you get over that? No, no, I don't see it that way at all. I think we'll see what we got this year. But I feel like we've got some really good young players in the system. I think that we should have the best offensive line in the country. That's the standard here. It has been for a long time. And so we'll keep pushing towards that this year. And I think everybody in that room will take the same thing. Tony Gervin. Brian, how's the situation in the bill linebacker? You should be able to write it out. I'll see that for you later. Yeah. So Sonny has really stepped up and played well. He's made this transition from safety to linebacker very well. I think he did a nice job in the spring. But you could definitely see as he went into the summer, just bigger, stronger, being
more comfortable closer to the line of scrimmage. It's different when you're closer to the line of scrimmage. I was doing a better job getting his hands on, on offense alignment and getting off of blocks. He's doing a better job with his hands. I think he understands the communication. The linebackers always have to be involved with the front. They can be involved and fit into the back end. He's doing that. I think he's looking forward to playing in the game and getting an idea of what it all looks like. But I can tell you in practice, he's playing fast, he's playing violent. I think he's a nice job of taking the meeting to the field, being very intentional about his work, but playing really hard. Yeah, I haven't talked to Jim because we'll make that final decision here over the weekend. He's certainly the leader in the club. Can you tell Ryan, I mean, Seth McLaughlin, can tell he's been there done that. Is he projected that to the offensive line? You're still, and I'm saying for the leadership, Stan, going a grown man.
How does that just come up? How does that show up? A bunch of ways. It just poised. It's not getting rattled when coach parks at you. It's, okay, I got this. Let me get it under control. It's seeing something in practice and being able to adjust on the move. Being prepared when you walk on the field, it's recognizing how hard you have to play at the position. It's kind of all of those things into one, but he's got great communication up front. He talks to the guys. He's moving quickly in there. And when you have experience like he has, the game seems to slow down at times yet. He seems to be playing it at a fast level. You see that in power? You see how he's going to react to that. He's taking a step in there. You can push himself off. You can go back and push him off. Hey, there was a point where you got a black stripe off and I feel like you took a step in the right direction.
When you come in in the summer, it is very difficult to get on the field, especially early this season. Whether he does or not, I will see. But if he continues to practice the way that he's been practicing, then he'll give himself a chance to be in the rotation midway through the season. Or later in the season, which is similar to some of the wider series he had before. You know, you've seen some of those guys get some reps in the season, but then make your impact later in the season. I think that's probably more his path right now now. He shows up and starts doing great. And you know, we'll give him the reps he deserves. We're like Jeremiah is in a different situation because he came in here in January and he was a little bit ahead. Anybody who comes in and January to me, I don't look at them as a freshman anymore. They've been here. They're in the program. And we expect them to contribute. I'm still in there right there talking and communicating.
But in the screen, it's been offense for his defense. So I've mostly been in the offensive side still kind of going through all those types of things. And there's a lot to work through this year just with the play clock. And then it's going to mean that it is close to my communication inside of 15 goes off. There's a lot of things that go on there. We don't really get notification on that. So I'm trying to just help chip with that and some communication that we're a person now. But I'm going to be very much involved with special teams. I think with the two minute warning, there's some strategic things that are going to go on again and again, the half of the game that I'd really be involved with. But to your point, just overall just looking guys in the eye and making sure that, you know, they got the right looking their eye. You know that, you know, they understand, you know, with the situation, what's going on in the game. You know, I think that happens sometimes with young players, you know, they're just like playing the next play. And that's not just how that's not how it works. We're going to win the situations. And so all those things will come into play and making and game adjustments, you know, be involved with all free faces, you know, watching the game on the table to try to identify what happened in the last series.
I think all those things will be happening. Right now, Nick is going to be the starter. And you know, that competition will go into next week, but right now as we head into the weekend, he is the starter and the plan is ready to go first part of what we go on Saturday against actor. He's got a strong leg. He's made it a good transition into the country, but also just playing football and not Australian football, which is very, very different. The snap to kick has really improved. You know, that was one thing. He's a taller guy. So the ball has to get out of his, you know, get out this quick faster. I think he's done that his time time has been good and he's been more consistent. You'll see, you know, he'll kick a few that just go right out of the stadium. And they just have a strong, strong leg.
So we're looking for that consistency. He's showing that here most recently. So he's got the upper hand right now. Last question. Do you ever remember? Well, I don't know if it's because Will maybe took a little bit longer to make the decision in December than some of the other top of the line quarterback. He was dead or because maybe there was a thought he wasn't going to be the starter. It can't be state this year. But it seems like people have viewed him kind of as a game manager type of quarterback. After eight months with him, where do you see his ceiling and what, what, what is Will's special plate to you? Where do you see him taking something? I see a bunch of traits there. I think the first trait of size is big. He can stand in the pocket and he's strong. So I mean, that's the first thing you notice about him. Again, whether it's standing in the pocket with poise, I think that's another trait that he has that's excellent. He, he feels a rush, but he stands right in there. I think the next trait is just, you know, his top end speed. He can run 22 miles an hour at that size, which there's not a lot of guys who can do that.
So I think that's the extraordinary trait. And I would, I would say his overall leadership commands in the huddle is is another, you know, something that he's, he's really, you know, grown into in the last few months and he's been here. And then his accuracy, he's been very accurate since he's been here. And when he knows what's going on and he can anticipate what's happening, I mean, it looks right. And he can hurt you, you know, a bunch of different ways. So, you know, his ceiling, that that's, that's going to be kind of, you know, up to how he plays this season. But, you know, I see a player who has a lot of great skills that, you know, translates well to the next level. So we'll see. But I know his first focus is on winning games around here. Coach, thank you very much. Coach, thank you. Coach, we have Tindra, Zibola, the goal line and Donovan Jackson on the team. I mean, you have nerves naturally. The answer first comes, I was good, I was just rolling.
Also, there's a weird means. Coach, trying to spread what I was saying was also the first start. Yeah. You, yeah, it's, but like, I prepared well. and camp and practice all week and I was I was ready. I have two multi-year starters. I did a lot. I mean I couldn't ask them, hey what we got here but I was prepared well. I mean I was telling Jimmy and said it's like a way our blocks were. I'll be emotional. I was just as a guide to Ohio. What does it mean to start a meeting? It was always my dream to come here and play and start and having that like I mean I just like keep going keep building those days and building. What a much younger Austin though. Do you have people from you that have? No, I don't think. Even I told myself like I asked my younger self, even committing it.
I wouldn't believe that now I have a couple of starts. Awesome has this happened faster than you? I guess you're technically a softball player. No I knew that year two I was going to see you some playing time. Now starting week one year two I didn't see that but like I was ready in spring ball. I was going to play some softball players. What does it mean to you to not only get the opportunities to play but to like keep playing well enough now. I think coaching staff trust you and they have been put out there in what I'm in situation. So that earned that so early on in your career. I guess it shows like my preparation, my hard work and just everything I put into this and I just finally show up on a field. There are moments, the top season, the end of the spring and the end of the season. I don't realize that you could play at this high level, high level with the ones.
The definitely was in training camp. I mean blocking highly can tie every day. It feels a lot of confidence in doing it well and not getting balled or anything. There is defensive tag wasn't that easy. Hero and Jason Moore and Taiwan. Pretty much anyone on the defensive line gets a bit of time so it came back as well. I was more collected how about the stability and the great thing about it. How much can he help you? He helped me quite a lot and I'm proud that he's our starting center not someone else's. But I mean he's like the captain of the line. He's another voice on the line with guys like Josh Fryer and Josh Simmons, Donnie and Tiger. That means another voice and another captain. I mean it's a lot of experience. I mean a lot of people can tell you before the play was going on and how to block someone.
What you need to do and it helps a lot. Tiger is talking about how calm he is and how much is that benefit of you? You have a guy who's kind of been there and seen a lot of us. Us Moore comp especially me and Tay as a first star so we were up here with Seth. He brought us down and we were like fine. Our emotions weren't high. Is that something he tells you? Is that something you pick up on by how he's acting? How do you sense what he's trying to do? It's by how he's acting and what I mean him when we're on the side of him. Both Josh and Donnie he was telling us like hey we're cool. We got it but it's pretty much like everyone. I said how much do you think? As a first time starter how much do you think that? I mean a lot. That was my first time ever using iPads. We didn't use iPads in high school but you can say like try to remember the defense. You can just come on a silent and bring up a play and get help.
I'm really not. Probably the first or second. But after that I thought we'd say all right. Awesome. Thank you very much. Thanks for the long story. Well, because you can. A part of you settle in the go. That's um I want to say maybe I don't know but I mean when I when I first heard you got the job I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo I can run with the tempo. You know what I mean? I'm I'm playing basketball all life in set of football and I feel like. Just the fast pace often so we're running really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw a football at 65 guys but can you kick a football 75 years of Lincoln? I probably think Lincoln what was your question? How is your your roommate at the community? He's a blessing man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. What's his name? His name's Lincoln. Teen Hoes. Oh, who's cleaner?
I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of pick each other's roomies because we're very clean and we don't like our rooms really messy. Well, it's true though. It's true. They're both pretty clean so. Luke, are you still a cross-training in Taggol some or if you just been off guard this spring? So far I've been all guard. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking it practice I practice. I could end up being back in Taggol good and on but you know I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next thing. Yeah. Oh, that mean a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here. It's been a dream just for being in Ohio kids. I'm from Ohio kids perspective. I mean, that's the biggest wish possible. I would say that's going to be pretty cool. What was it like just last year first game getting on the field for the first time? It didn't fly. This is going to be a weird answer but it feels like I was playing a game that made sense. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing. I just went in that first game and was like, shoot, I'm here now.
It's time to roll. You know, it didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't even hit me after. I'm like, what would you feel doing? It's like getting out there at the end of the game. I'm just like, honestly, I don't know. I felt less nervous than I did in high school and it makes no sense. What is the thing that you want to do? What is it? What is it? What is it? What is it? What is it? It's just a matter of time. I'm learning from Josh Aniston. I think, prior to my biggest role model series, my big brother, my first major. Tell him about Padilla. I don't want to say it. Padilla, okay. No. Yeah, yeah. Padilla, Aniston, those are my guys, man. I mean, even Miles too. All three of them. Those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well. I'm excited to see where they can get to. I'm excited to play with them. Oh yeah, he's not really helpful. You know, just keep in my mind just settled and straightforward on the next play. That's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to say consistent in my work.
I think that's the biggest thing for me is just to inconsistent and worry about the next play. I think it's actually about those big runs you guys started turning out. It's had plus there, but it's still a beat off each other. Absolutely. I mean, when you see defensive, and you see defensive start arguing with each other and things like that, I mean, that makes it a lot easier. You know, I have those kind of 11 play drops. What does that like? It's a nice, which is a big starting deal. Like you guys were dealing with that thing. I think that's the first thing. I couldn't quite get off all day. They've had to be the second. I mean, it feels good to rip off these runs because I mean, we've put them so much effort. We're doing great. You know, seeing a brother, you know, that had worked. He's been switched. Tech Reserve, since his offensive line wise is up prepared this week, we've done darker back in there that y'all are at home for some time really. This season, you know, it's not pretty can Austin. It's just more of a down with Jackson. Pretty seasonal American, etc.
I mean, enjoying it. You know, done with Jackson is a very good football player. When he's on the field he makes his presence up. I mean, we love to train him on that. If there's no margin, just go through and you know, okay, it's him we know it can be. The other seat would be, there was a seat. Watching you guys last week. No or even more of a force. It felt like watching you guys. Maybe even a, you know, did it feel authentic? Yeah, I mean, we put in the work during practice. We practice really hard. Coach, they're really challenged us to practice hard. And I was just a result of it. When it's rolled up like that, what's it feel like being in the mix with the enemy? It's us. When you work hard for something and you're able to see, like, what comes out of it, like, there's no better feeling in that. Hey, Graham. Can you hear me? I'm going to put the horse in the middle. You can't just run. It's about the width of the way you do it. And I'm going to put it in the middle. It's about the width of the way you do it.
No, I mean, I was really funny to see. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Take a look at your one. Take a look at your one. What has Seth been up on? I brought you guys to the first of the games. What's it been like playing next time for the last two? He's, you know, he's really calm and stormy. You never see real panic and having a guy like that next to you. You know, you're having really played as many of me and for snaps. I mean, there's no one else I'd rather add to my left and to my right. For Seth. Those guys, they do so much for this offensive. I mean, he's... People talk about his intelligence really kind of showing up in the film room and on the field. Where have you noticed that intelligence and how has that helped you? Yeah, like I said, and crunched him, you know, when things aren't exactly looking like how we practice it, you know, having a guy like that that everyone's blown up will do this, this, this.
And then we execute it, having a guy like that like this. There's none better than that. Hero? What you got? I'm very from this one. What's my favorite cake? What's my favorite cake? No. Right, brother. Brother? No, brother. Oh, no, no. I almost came back to Cobras, Hanagas and more. Take a look at it, Marshall. They got a couple guys on the deep inside of the road that have big tin bodies. Absolutely. What do you see when you look at their tape and see 15, 7, a couple of those guys have been pretty big since the last day. Yeah, those guys here, they're real players. They're real players. And so they coach well, you can sell them. They go hard, you know, they're real players over there. We've been practicing to the best of our abilities, you know, and spectacular.
And I'm prepared for that. You see, they've been for Genie Tech in the last year. The other day, they're taking the role. They play good ball over there and, you know, their defense plays hard. They challenge teams, you know, sometimes they might be overlooked and they still challenge teams. And so they come out there with the mentality like no matter who's in front of us or when it will happen. I mean, the actions right there right in front of you right now, which is kind of a good thing and kind of a bet that we should shift off the rest, you know, hitting back in it. Inside. You talked to your manager. Yeah, I mean, I hear from Chris every once in a while trying not to bother him too much, but it's always good to hear from guy like that, guys like the one, even Matt Jones returning back.
All right, Tyler, thank you. And for this year, just be able to confirm that job. I think my weight, my height is more regard height. When I'm faster, my feet and I'm just thinking that you need to kind of have some still sometimes like basketball or want to be on that just like defend, but you know, you have to stay in the stage where you're somewhere. Exactly. That's a great question. I feel like these two can answer that for the beer right now. I think KJ here will answer that. I don't know what to say about that. What do you guys think? I don't know. I'm going to every day. This man is strong. I'm talking about like you have the basketball here.
You can just do it. He was kind of really fine. Just a whole bunch of things to have. And he got to risk that. He doesn't give up on the playing. Like you said, he's going to go in there and watch the film. He's going to be there for the better. I'm going to get on the field. I'm going to just go. You can't just go. You can see the pool going to be there. Here, if he was far worse round, I'll be like. He's not like a coach, man. He's not like a coach. Chip Kelly's influence changed your mind about maybe like the idea of tackle versus driving. Because obviously his offense of predelictionals for like, yeah, the offense blind player, has he been a part of you settling in the guard? I want to say maybe I don't know, but I mean, when I'm pretty sure you got the job, I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo. I can run with the tempo. You know what I mean? I'm playing basketball all life in set up football. And I feel like just the fast pace offense that we're running really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw football at 65 guys, but can you kick a football 75 yards of Lincoln?
I have a question. Lincoln, what was your question? What was your, your roommate at the beginning? He's a blessing, man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. What's his name? His name's Lincoln. Keen Holtz. Okay. Oh, who's cleaner? I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of pick each other's roommates because we're very clean. And we don't like our words really messy. Well, it's true though. It's true. It's a real pretty clean stuff. Luke, are you still a cross-training at tackle some or if you just been off guard? Oh, so far I've been off guard. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking it practice, I practice. I could end up being back attack, but I could not. But, you know, I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next one is. Yeah. Oh, that mean a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here. You spend a dream just for being in a high-o-kid and from a high-o-kid perspective. I mean, that's the biggest switch possible. I would say that's going to be pretty cool.
What was it like last year at first game getting on the field for the first time? It didn't feel like, this is going to be a weird answer, but I feel like I was playing a game that made sense. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing. I just went in that first game and was like, shoot out here now. It's time to roll. You know, it didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't even hit me after. I was like, what would you feel there? It's like getting out there at the end. Honestly, I don't know. I felt less nervous than I did in high school and it makes no sense. What is it that you're going to say? What is it that you're going to say? What is it that you're going to say? A lot. I mean, I'm learning from Josh Ann Austin. I think prior to that, it was one of my biggest role models here. He's my bigger brother in my first game. I'm up to Dia. I don't know. This is the Dia, okay. Yeah, no. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, to Dia, I'm off to it. Those are my guys, man. I mean, even Miles too. I mean, all three of them. Those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well. And I'm excited to see where they can get to. I'm excited to play on the field with them.
Oh, yeah. You know, it's been really helpful. You know, just keeping my mind just settled and straightforward on the next blood. What do you think of Vegas? It's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to take consistent in my work. I think that's the biggest thing for me is just taking consistent and worried about the next blood. And I was like, whoa, I never had that happen. No other school, like just Ohio State field can't win. And I was like, wow, that's crazy. Do you like, I mean, you're quiet, but also do you like that? Do you want everything that comes to mind? Do you want to do what you want? I do, but at the same time, I just like to be a normal person. I don't really like to take that. So, when you're on the field, are you a showman? I mean, how does he describe his kind of like your art form? Yeah, I mean, yeah. I want to feel, I'm a little bit more chipmunked. I'm a little bit more chipmunked, a little bit, but sometimes I still require them. What's your competitive art view? When did you know to say about yourself? I've been having that, I mean, since I was like eight, nine years old.
I mean, just how I am, how is it just to be competitive? That's the reason why chose to come to Ohio State. Just to compete each and every day, just to go against the best DB group in the country. What you're saying is if it enhanced the last several months, I mean, you want to just, it's been no longer in the Benzel Pernick, etc. For sure, I'm just going to get them two guys, the best two DBs in the country. I mean, that's the reason I can't hear. Just going to get God just going to make me better each and every day. Yesterday, I went out playing the right zone. Yeah. You didn't say a word. You played later, you called well, I didn't. You didn't say a word that made me feel good. I said, I said, well, he said, when he defed little boys, he said, I'm here, I said, okay, I'm going to be back. And that's something to be back. Then when I'm going to be the play, I just, I'll just walk off. That's it. When you talk about the ball, you say, I'll tell you when I'm coming back, right? What's it like getting back to the car now, say, you bring in the ass, you're asking me to be back. It feels great just us two to be on the field together.
We're going to make a lot of plays this year. What you learned from that? I learned a lot, especially from Carnau, because we both play outside. So me just learning from him and you know, the things he learned, he just teaching me, and you know, he was behind Mar, and stuff like that. So he just teaching me the game for sure. What specifically you got better at that, and you can't compare it to what you've heard. I said my footwork, that's the biggest game. Me and Coach Hotline was looking at that's one thing I need to get better on. So, I mean, I just worked on that in all seasons and just got better over time. What, what can still be your work ethic in here? Still my work at the end. I mean, just, I really don't know. I can't really answer that, but it just, it just, it's just in me like, I just want to work, that's one thing. I think I say, I get it from my dad. My dad really the reason why I worked so hard, because since I was like eight years old, he just wanted me to just work and be the best at what I do. So, I mean, I really, I say get from my dad. What's the difference in the clip of my day, you know, like on Johnny Day, what show I'm going to be?
Yeah. Yeah, see. And how close did you come to the show? I wasn't, I wasn't superhead of, I don't know why. I made a scene where I gave it that, I was a bad guy. Yeah, that's it. How did your dad set me, table? He said a big example. I mean, just, I ain't going to say it was only just my dad. It was, I mean, I have a cousin named, you know, it's very pretty for the Seattle Seahawks. So, I was, I looked at the him as well. I mean, seeing what he was doing, I was Virginia, we're taking Austin and Steadman Bayley. So, I mean, he was a motivation for me. And just all the guys that grew up before me in a minor garter's area, for sure, I mean, just looking at those guys. Guys like, I say Brandon, and for sure he was class ahead of me. So, I seen the things he was doing in the eighth grade. And I was just like, whoa, I mean, that's something I want to do. What do you think about the expectations for you? I mean, Chris Carter on my podcast a few weeks ago, he's actually the, he's actually the factor from the first play, first day, first game, et cetera. Those are big expectations. Do you have Brakes those? I really don't, I mean, I know his big expectations for me because, you know,
no one playing the country coming in and all the hype around me. So, I mean, I just try to block out all that stuff and just focus on the main thing, just the team and our receiver room and the locker room. And, you know, just first game come, if I don't, you know, see the expectations that you have for me. I mean, I don't really care. I just want to go out there and win the game. How much of a confidence do you have for you when people like Chris Carter, Marvin Harrison Jr. are saying, this guy can maybe next great receiver, no house. I mean, it's something great. I mean, I just got, I just got to go out there on the field and just show you guys that I could beat it. That's, you know, part of the great, great Ohio State receiver to come through here. So, I mean, it's a blessing and know how that, but I know that's got to go out there and play and show you guys. What do you think about that? I mean, it's a lot for me to be, was it the first freshman? Yeah, I mean, just, that's a blessing for me for sure, just, you know, shows all the hard work that I put in and out to me on the way to Mr. My dad really, I mean, the maturity, you know, just be older than,
don't act my age, act older than my age. I mean, a lot of people tell me that I don't act my age. I'm way, way beyond my, way beyond my years. I mean, just, it just got to be mature and, you know, act, don't act like a kid. What is the couple more questions for Jeremiah? What is it about? It's about 50, 50, 50. It's about 50, 50, 50. It's just, you know, when I see a 50-50 ball, I mean, just, I just think it's, I got to make the play. You know, it's on me, you know, matter how the ball is, if it's a bad ball, I just feel like I got to make that play, you know, no matter what the certain sense of this, you know, matter if it's a bad ball, I feel like the ball is mine, it's no matter who I'm fronting me or no, no matter what. Where did that go to? Getting between the ball and the fender come from, I mean, that talent sets you apart. It's a lot of ways. Do you always have that net? Oh, yeah, I did. I always had that net because I was like, since I started to parents see it right like eight years, nine years old, I just found the way to, you know, make sure that ball is mine when it's in the air. And I just, I always find a way, you know, find a way to make my quarterback look good.
I said, I got a little bit of a line up, I can't line up saying, go Howard's looking more, thinking so more comfortable. What do you say, I'm just going to say something. Oh, yeah, for sure. He definitely made a big jump from industry. I like his confidence. He's starting to talk more, talk a lot of mess on the field. And I like that about my quarter, but I love quarterbacks about the talk and, you know, just get around his players and making a feel good about it. He talked on the field, you know, just, you just said a lot of stuff, I can't say, but he'll talk for sure. Okay. Jeremiah, thank you very much. Thank you guys. I was on me, my split was two, he wanted me to come, my split down. So that was, that was on me, that wasn't a good, that was me. The result of that play is science. Clear that will be offense, recognize it. Veraph願 is you're single about one on one, Bruns Man, they're willing to take that shot to you every time. What are you expecting to have this?
Biger role in the offense, this, this. Not at all. Not at all, just coming in, you know, just a Ohio State. And just all the receivers that have been here and I was here before I got here. So I did not have no expectation, there was heaven, the world that I have right now. So I mean, I just get all the things that go, and then to be able to be in this position, I know. Is that surreal to you then? To be putting up kind of numbers, you already have? Oh, yes for sure. I mean, but no job nothing I still got to do me He tells me a lot each and every day that you know single hot single covers one or two you don't matter who or you don't matter Just don't go me actually got to make a play I say I say fall camp as really when he would just Trust him. He just don't know and I'm just going to go get it Yeah, yeah, I should have cut my split now I think I was you know, like bottom of the numbers
I should have my light numbers plus numbers plus two I believe yeah, something like that So that's the reason why he just played over top I I mean, I love it. I still feel like I'm just a regular freshman, but you know a lot of people say I'm not but I mean just the role that I have just coming in is just it's it's been a blessing. I just can't Think Can't say it's on me is on God and just the coaches for trusted me to have a put a freshman out there and just to go out and make plays So what did you actually expect?
Not that much because you know you got you got a car now take you got mecha boogled I came back you got bringing in that big if you're all Jaden ballot all on God, so really my mentality just coming in just working learning just no special teams and make plays on special teams a lot of I mean just watching them they We've been attending last three teams in place. So I mean it's gonna be a better team that last couple years that We played a higher state play them as we could they said so man Yeah, for sure we hungry right now. I can see in the air body eyes Everybody in office office in line quarterback will how we're receiving we definitely hungry for sure ready to go out there and Hasadina and just put on the show
Being interfered with not getting the call or not being able to catch you I say be able not to make the catch anyway. I Fly everybody's don't need me. I have to catch it no matter how the different on me or not I just feel like I have to make a play no matter what I mean I play Saturday. I feel I could record it But you know it was a pass in the friends, but it touched my hands. I should record it Dan hope There's a lot of discourse from fans this week about you not winning the Sean Alexander freshman year of or just what's your thoughts on that? I mean me calling is a great player as well. I mean I can't really not kill no Sean is a great guy talked to him Two weeks ago. It's a great guy learned a lot of things from him outside of football as well So I mean I really can't focus on that. I'm just worried about beating Oregon and no just going out there to pass it And just put on the show And More You mentioned getting bragging is by mission. Is that frustrating? You see that the bottle teams. Yeah, is that frustrating? Is that you know you and it feels like you always think you're open
Are you still open when you're bragging? Oh, yeah, for sure. I'm still over no matter what bragging or not I mean me they just came out with a good game plan to break it me and a mecca and you know I mean just no things didn't go as planned as we thought it would but just got to keep moving on just move forward As I say Stephen how I did Did you mind that the two touchdown plays that you had with Wilhauer? How many times do you think you guys rep that to get you those were perfect throws perfect patterns and you beat your guy off the line of Scrimmage just how many times do you think and what does it take to perfect that I think we read the least I Don't know how many times and practice over the weeks that we had off I mean just came down to you know they press me we taking a shot That's what they told me the weeks we was off and he told me her before the game in the locker room I just got to give you a shot and that's what he did and I just made a play Just how tough was that challenge against their secondary? I know you have to get the end of the game
But you guys made place all day long against them Just what what you thought about the challenge those guys gave you I'll say the challenge is gonna be you know a good Challenge they have some great global guys there Jabal Muhammad number seven or Niko Rhee or the other corner I'm an hour and over there the great global guys. I mean probably the best we go see all year for sure We just got a good name you know be Ohio State as a Probably when the whole team on me I should say I I Mean I'm always open for me for sure me just no total ball in my area. I'm gonna find a way to make a play Talked earlier about you know some of the great athletes that you got challenged and you aspire to be like I guess Where's that confidence kind of come from for you? How long have you had that confidence that you have the ability to be One of the greatest in this sport I mean a lot of people tell me that I'm gonna be great at what I do since I was about
Going into high school a lot of people tell me that me just you know Football is all I know and that's all I really want to do like I live breathe sleep football Like that's all I really care about don't care about everything outside of football like football is all I know And I just want to play football You know I mean just you know the weeks that we had all we were just working on deep deep shots because they tell us Immediately that we have we got to take shots down fill me just got to connect on them and no will tell me before before the games I like I said You got a total ball out then just give me a chance and I'm gonna make a play for you That's what I that's what you told me and I just got to make a play for We can all Joe we can all talk about the expectations and the start of this become You know you were just 13 games
Just a freshman how do you take all these expectations know when you step on the field that you're always open and still go out there I mean Expectations, I mean I can't know how you stay for a reason. That's what I wanted when it be child is I wanted the expectation Expectations I should say Me coach out loud just help me throughout the whole year just preparing me for each game each week a mega book a Cardinal tape bringing in is really the whole receiver on just help me stuff. I don't really know about It just helped me throughout the whole week and you know, I can't really say it's all on me because my talent But they really been a big part of the reason I'm having the season that I'm having for sure I When you look back Learning that playbook I playbook a certain else just coming in spring ball
Me just new place in every week. I'm like whoa, what is this like this new place every day in coach out like you we go you go be good We got no summer fall camp you go be great. So I mean just you know That's it. That's definitely was the hardest part just learning to playbook and a lot of other things has to say for sure My I'm pretty I'm pretty sure I got it down pat right now, but Net season I really want to learn everything the HZ Yeah, I really want to learn everything in a playbook for net share for sure How many guys it might take because you do not feel so when you are one-on-one Well, it's talked about what he sees you What is going through your mind is you wind up and realize there's one guy covering Win that's all I could say I mean as a coach hardline We do something like in a hotel Friday night before the game He asked me like a question like you get one or one something like that. He asked me what do you do?
I say win and everybody just start laughing. I don't know where every like It's true like you got a win and you want to run about it. So Jeremiah didn't move you around so we're gonna see to the point where Get a couple matchups against linebackers. Yeah, what goes through your mind with you find yourself mashed up against a lineback I just start laughing in my head a little bit I mean linebackers can't really cover Receives like that so I just know like it's most likely to be open But you know they just try to move me around a lot because you know people try to bracket me when I'm outside just alone by myself So that's why there's me around Jeremiah you mentioned the most difficult part of your freshman campaign has been learning the playbook when it's been the best part so far It's gonna rub off on people eventually And I would also say that you know, you kind of have to understand who you're talking to you know people Certain stuff makes different people to it. So you've got to know you guys
You know if you got to get harder on somebody to to make them go or if you got to kind of relate to them and you know Pull them aside. I haven't talked so I think that all goes into leadership and you have to be able to That has to be a skill that you have to be able to do I want to say you know too much has has necessarily changed But you can tell you how tremendous trust and coach Kelly and what he's what he's gonna do in the Kind of the schemes and everything that he's brought into our program So the fact that you know he has such confidence in him and his play call and ability makes us tremendously confident so Coach days as always been coach games continue to stay that way But I'm glad he's able to you know focus more on what he needs to focus on I'm just He's kind of a field general in a sense kind of a quarterback on that side a lot of people may think just you know the Mike linebacker We have Cody Simon who does that as well, but Caleb's kind of that for our secondary
kind of make sure things are clicking on all cylinders and he's just a very cerebral kid very smart And he's able to kind of take control of the defense. So make make the right calls make the right checks So he's definitely annoying for the office to deal with but it makes us better I Would say in fact the entire offense It's not like you know, we're not oblivious to the fact of the caliber player he is but You know as a offense you come out and you expect to execute on anybody who's lined up a passion Yeah, I never really thought about like that, but we definitely come on come a long way This is my freshman year They fall to the Lord. They's coming all these years and come ahead on straight and allow me to you know Develop into the person that I am now But so you know coming full circle it is really surreal moments of you not seeing your year playing against you know the Kid flag on my first touch and so it's really cool
I remember I remember Kyle getting yelled at you it was a ball He is not supposed to throw and I also remember getting pushed out at like the one or two year online So that's kind of a bittersweet memory, but it was a great memory I mean I have to say yes if I don't think I should store it out there. It's a be playing football Who's a my my my my my came in he kind of has all the intangibles ever see where you can tell you just love the game The way he goes about his business. He runs every route to perfection. He's a he's a no very cerebral kid And every time he gets on the field he expects perfection. So He's just got to continue to develop continue to work and I'm really excited to see what he's able to do for us Yeah, I think you know It's no secret that he has all the physical capabilities that you want to receive a really any position You can play any position on the football field with his athletic ability, but
So a lot of it for him was putting together the mental piece of the game You know not just understanding what he has on a specific play but the whole concept Understanding defense is all that type of stuff. So there's nothing really that can get you ready for that moment for your first never college because it is different than high school, but You know once you want to get acclimated gets used to it. I have no I have no doubts it's gonna take off for us and do too many things Yeah, I mean it's been a it's been a huge part of everything that we've done been a huge part of a lot of the reasons Why the students came back and everything like that? So we have a team by the study that we continue to do and continue to grow Kind of just preaches truth of the gospel to the guys on the team and It's definitely permeated throughout the team throughout the years because you know looking back a couple of years ago There wasn't that many people on the team heavily into their faith And along came a couple special people who really changed the time in this of our program But you know the Bible says one man plans and other men watch but God ultimately brings an increase So we're just trying our best to stay obedience the Lord and he's done tremendous things
I'll say kind of the the founders I'll say of the teams faith We're definitely master team for one Cameron Bab and Xavier Johnson, so Really what I view my responsibility as a captain is just as a as a person in general to push everybody closer to Christ And you know by doing that I try to walk as close to Christ as I can myself I'm kind of be that example me that life for people look up to And I think all the the basic principles that are found in the Bible and you're trying to pursue Christ We naturally naturally make you a better leader better person better football player in a sense So I just try my best to anyway I
Yeah, I mean we have specific goals going into every single week Some of our goals for this week is you know things can get sloppy in the week one to see it all across the country You know false stars penalty is all these types of stuff So we're really just trying to be clean go out there play a fast complete football game clicking on and firing on all cylinders. So by no means are you as underestimating any opponent we go out there on the field every Saturday It's waiting to go out whoever lines up the cost for us. So that's just our mentality. So we're gonna hold you to that Yeah, very very un-series guy very funny guy Kind of lines the room when he walking when he walks in and he's just he's a true joy to be around And you can kind of throw will into any setting and he's gonna get along with everybody there So definitely up the team chemistry locker room. We love having him around. So we're super glad he's part of this team
But when the ball did come out you guys were efficient in the passing game What allowed the passing effect to skate that The ball is How much do you feel like that game to be a building block for you in terms of continuing to be a big Hardly off I feel like you game a building like we're a stack each game and stuff like that So I just made bigger places Well, they've been doing pretty good. They've been that and stuff like that new guys new places and stuff like that We're all trying to pick up from the injuries and stuff You guys We just got it in the box Why don't you get in there probably get the safety get my backers or the end of like that whatever they need us to do
All the wilds come down What's it like Later this year If you figure it would find you a significant that's significant I knew it all come away each and every week We have played for each and all of us and stuff like that It really depends on what the difference Like the give us one thing and it's not a ball goes away from me or go and come to me and stuff like that So ultimately it's not a matter of You're blocking a state of point Yeah, our blockers and the wire doesn't have been a big emphasis this year So like that because we like that pretty much all last year So they may be a big emphasis of blockers here from the water And when you look at Vince made on video, what just stands out about there maybe they'll pass with fast what you It's you're going to be personally up against They're pretty good fellow corners. They play man a lot of stuff like that
So we got a winner one and one I thought of on the perimeter Last year Similar What you make The same A little size They're all quite Thank you Five guys The way he kind of brings some good energy Jace Middleton right there too. Yeah, he kind of overseas max the bomb a little bit So that's pretty fun Catching we all have some pretty good opportunities for catching especially practice Definitely competitive but in a good way we're all there supportive We all know our
Working with each other Speaking I mean
I mean That's what our unit is we're turning I would say we definitely I Mean I want to really say it's real
