It was an absolute dime to carnell take but stand out throw of a day and I think with Lincoln having another year of experience It just felt to me like Lincoln was in a little bit more control out there It felt like he had a little bit more command of what he was doing out there Where's it felt to me like like Julian was just a little bit off today? Yeah, our command is a good way to put it and I can I throw to carnell beautiful go ball up the sideline You know 40 it ends up being a 45-yard touchdown carnell had half a step a step on his defender And it was why were it needed to be but it wasn't the only impressive throw I I think Lincoln had a really nice throw over the middle on the slant route to fill up Bell the freshman He had a few other nice ones mixed in there. It wasn't a perfect day for Lincoln He also under threw a couple balls that I saw but on the whole I think it's definitely fair to say he was the most impressive of the quarterbacks today and I would actually even put Tadian St. Clair second in that grouping Tadian had some really nice flashes especially early in the practice Didn't have that consistency as the practice went on there's clearly a freshman still learning but Julian missed on some throws today for what interception
I I think there's clear strides that he needs to take to claim the starting job ultimately for Ohio State and look I think if anything else at lens credence to at least at this point in the offseason This is a real competition between Julian and Lincoln. I think If this is what's been consistently shown behind the scenes Obviously, this is just one practice we get to watch But if this is what's consistently shown behind the scenes I think Lincoln has a real shot to ultimately win the job this fall and of course we'll have another big opportunity to watch The quarterbacks and all these guys next week at the spring game and I think you know It'll be really telling at least for us You know do we see Julian make some of those strides next week? You know he struggled in the spring game last year will he have a better showing in the spring game this year? I think that would go a long way for him Certainly for Lincoln to kind of keep building some momentum as he tries to you know keep himself up before front of that competition and Yeah, like you said You know KVN was only with the third team today and so you know, you know It's pretty clear of it right now. It's a Lincoln versus Julian battle in terms of you know who they're evaluating to be that starting quarterback
But I mean I think one of the plays of the day early in the practice Tavy and he spins away from a Russia throws a beautiful ball down the field to David Adolf There were a few times today where you could really see Tavy and's athleticism on display his ability to evade rushers and extend plays and I think that's one of the things that gives him a lot of potential so you know I think Tavy and was built to come a long way to have a chance to be the starting quarterback this year But I think you can certainly see those flashes of his potential to be a star quarterback for Ohio State in the future Going away from a quarterbacks, you know, there were several guys that stood out to me today I think one of the biggest ones was Quincy Porter and it sounded like after practice He lost his black stripe which would make him the first of this year's freshman to lose his black stripe Which is certainly a notable achievement and he was a guy, you know, you heard you know Austin Edwards on the PA calling his name all day He made a lot of plays one of them a really nice diving catch on a throw from Lincoln Keenholes and he looks like a guy You know we don't have the same expectations for Quincy Porter but we did for Jeremiah Smith a year ago as a freshman
But boom there's been positive things said about him all spring and looking at what he did out here today He looks like a guy you has the potential to help Ohio State as a freshman Yeah, and when Jeremiah was coming in last year I talked a lot about the polish that he had coming from Florida and playing in that league I mean coming out of New Jersey I think there's Quincy Porter has some of that even in the Catholic league that he played in was really difficult He I think is impressive with his size and the refinement of his game The way he uses his size to make catches like he was walling off defenders on a couple of catches We saw that diving one you mentioned the way he's able to weaponize his length and have that big catch radius I think because it's one thing to be tall It's another thing to actually be a good tall receiver, you know like a Marvin Harris and junior was like a Jeremiah Smith is I think Quincy Porter has that potential and he's really flashed it today As the starters go receiver wise, I think Brandon NS had a fantastic outing today Had a really nice post-route. I think Lincoln's probably second best buddy named besides the go ball to Carnell
He had a Brandon NS on a really nice post-route down the field Brandon had made a big gain on that play There were other ways they were getting him involved with the offense coming across the field with some underneath throws Things of that nature fill up Bell also really stood out to me as far as another freshman goes Not as much as Quincy, but they they were mixing him in with the twos in the threes getting him some Of those reps and getting him some looks a lot of underneath passes to him for me though I think out of everyone the biggest standout might have been bow jacks in the day I would there was a run that bow jacks and had one of the first plays after we got out here on the field Bow Boat two or three tackles Running up the middle on a play and picked up about 11 yards Carson Hensman's walking past me and he says Oh, Bo like that for real. That's like yes And watching him today there was a shotgun toss. They did to him coming on the outside He picked up about 24 yards on it and just out running the defenders You can see the burst you can see the Will power you can see how he always keeps his legs turning
To me bow jacks and was a really impressive standout today and it you know Maybe a guy that could count challenge for some carries come fall Yeah, we've talked a lot about James peoples and CJ Donaldson both of them have looked really good this spring But yeah, the way bow is running today I think he's a guy to watch too Can he make that a for a man running back rotation rather than just a two man running back rotation if he keeps practicing like he did today I think he's got a chance we flip it over to the other side of a ball I think probably the biggest standout on defense to me was Peyton Pierce Another guy we've been hearing a lot of good things about all spring long and James Lauren Knight is really talking him out He was getting a lot of first team reps up there today, you know sunny style is one of the veterans who's you know getting You know some limited reps, you know Coming off a plan a ton last year and so Peyton Pierce was out there a lot with the ones and he made multiple pass breakups You know you can you can see why James Lauren Knight is keeps talking him up as a guy who is going to be one of those top free Linebackers this year and it's gonna play a lot of football for the buck guys this season Yeah, I'm taking with the defense to me too and that front group
Peyton McDonald was really good today had one of his classic goal line stuff We saw him make a few of those even during the highest-dates national championship run last year That was kind of his way to get involved in the defense last season in those goal wide short yardage packages But he pressured a throw I believe it was from Julian Saiyan he looped around and don't hit him basically forced in the completion Or not hit him because I don't think the quarterbacks alive at that point, but he pressured him forced it in completion Had a PPU that he batted down was constantly getting in the backfield of making chaos Also defensively I thought Aaron Scott had a really good day in coverage He was paired up against Jeremiah Smith a lot of the time. He had a PPU working against Jeremiah There were a couple of other plays where Jeremiah May have made the catch but Aaron was right there And I mean you're talking about the best receiver in the country right he he made Jeremiah work for it is what I'm saying and a lot of corners aren't capable of making Jeremiah work for it, but He was right there in coverage. He had another couple good reps against other receivers
To me Aaron Scott was one of the more impressive defensive backs today and then domain Matthew's also within interception So I think the corner back room really looking strong in this practice for Ohio State I agree completely Devon Sanchez made a couple plays as well He had a breakup against Jeremiah Smith Lorenzo style junior. He almost had an interception of a really nice break on a ball I believe he was going up against Brandon Innes and coverage and so I think you're seeing the depth of that room You know Aaron Scott Devon Sanchez both mixing in a lot with IGB in domain Matthew's a fat first team defense today And you know Lorenzo taking a lot of a rep spirit nickel, but you know, it seems like both those five guys Yeah, that seems to be kind of that top of that corner back group and I Know I think Know I was definitely trying to take advantage of each and every rep that I got today and You know like I said just looking forward to getting better tomorrow
Yeah, I mean design I mean you felt his presence. I mean OTA's I think he's been a great addition to the defense He brings a lot of energy. He's he's juiced up and he's a great player. So Can't wait to get the pads on because I hear he's pretty physical too So on you know, I played against him a little bit when I was trying to use him the choice So I kind of played against him a couple times, but I mean he's a great player and I know he's hasn't been great so far Yeah, I mean Russ is always you know any question that I have I can always better rest asking for advice You know, he's gonna you know get his knowledge to me of course he's been in the lead for a long time So you know any advice he has for me. I'm always open and willing to take that But he was really just you know trying to follow along practice yet the script and stands and really just trying to play the practice mentally so As we all are sported back so Yeah, I found out right when I woke up this morning so
No last night just looking over the place, but this morning I This morning, but it's good you know to say you know some short-term army some diversity You know some stuff that you know not expecting you know because we're gonna face things and games that aren't expected so Nothing about how we react to the situation and how we adjust I think it was like six up to six o'clock so I woke around six thirty, but yeah, I think you know six around six But to change your approach at all just did I change my approach? Not really you know, I just tried to you know do my job for my teammates and I'm not really changing these things I try to come out here the same guy every day. She's trying to be consistent I felt all right, you know, of course it wasn't perfect. There's always room to improve, but I felt all right, you know You know miss George I got bumped into I'm not gonna talk about it, but I felt all right overall got got
Got some good reps in today for sure Yeah, I mean Pat one thing about patty's really savvy Smart and then he also has a great hands too, so when you you know get all those attributes in a tight-end It makes him a great player. You had a lot of 12 and 13 out there. Yeah, yeah, for sure as much as you expected morning You know, we're a team that can do a lot of things. You know, we were a lot of good players on offense So I think you can mix it up a good bit. So not really expecting anything Not really. I mean they're not gonna say that you know mess with your head like that, but you know Yes, I didn't really think I was gonna get planted off I'm not sure I'm not sure how you're sitting right now. I'm talking so Thank you for checking out this content from post gazette sports if you watch this video on YouTube
Please like the video and subscribe to our channel for all the sports coverage the post gazette has to offer visit post dash gazette dot com You know you start going through the list so we we have to and I think initially treat them differently But quickly we have to get them you know all in the same page that we're all in the same page And so as spring goes on we'll do that but early on we'll be really smart especially coming off a spring break Right? Yes, right? We mentioned the spring showcase looking a little bit different this year and you guys are so how's your got those details? Are you able to share what that might look like? Not yet. Not yet. Yeah, I mean there there will certainly be opportunities to scrimmage and it'll look like a game but You know because of some of the guys that we mentioned we still want them out there doing some things So that will probably be in some some drill work and some seven on seven work and
Be good to get everybody out there so that the fans can see them but But the most important thing is getting the young guys game reps with with hopefully a good crowd out there So that because we know the next time again will be against Texas. So We'll also gonna have to take a hard look at the the health of our team as we get into the end of April So we have to be able to adjust and be flexible with it But again, that's the goal was to get these guys as many reps we can in the stadium No, why is it got the lantern? Ryan now that we got the national championship sort of reflect and sit back What's I mean, what do you think the biggest thing is that you learned about yourself during that entire playoff run? I just to trust the process. Yeah, and just keep pushing and You know Sometimes you know and we all know that's it's easy to To say it's a little bit different to do is you just again trust the process and make the adjustments and keep pushing forward You know we always say you know ignore the noise whether it's good or bad
Because criticism and praise are all the same you just have to you know focus on what you're focused on and And all the work and decisions that are made during the beginning of the season You know we have to adjust and tweak them But at the same time we also have to believe in what we believe in our philosophy and I think it's also you know Making sure that you're a crew the right people that you know when you when you do have a A tough moment, you know everyone's able to stick together and not going different directions and fray I think those were all learning lessons You know one of the things for us that was tricky was You know the portal was open before our season and open in closed before our season was over and and that's something that we got to take a hard look at with rules You know and people will say well, you know you guys just won the national championship What are you complaining about well that matters for this year's team and?
So that was that was a major challenge for us because as you can imagine You know if you are trying to add somebody in the portal, but you're still trying to finish your season out how that can affect your current roster so And then the second part of that is we get down with the season and you know Notre Dame And Ohio State are the only two teams with guys in the portal for that five-day window and everybody else is closed and it's open season on our players for five days like We got to take a hard look at this to figure out what's right, you know and whether there's just one one window in the spring portal Once all that is flushed out to me. It's either that or you move back to games But again, we can talk about that in another another date. So You know we will obviously look in the portal based on how things come out of the spring we'll look at that Because you know we have we have to fill out a roster too. You know there's some positions that we don't we're not of capacity right now So so depth let's see in on defense I would say right now D line is probably of the biggest concern just in terms of replacing those four guys and then also you know losing hero
So that's five five guys right there. You know, we have to replace I think that we have some good guys and good options there, but but that'll be a focus You know in offense You know all line is always something that we need to take a look at and see how some of those those new guys fit in and how it all comes together You know and then losing quenchon and try it running back, you know James and now we have CJ and some of the younger guys that You know now they have to carry the water. So that's gonna be you know big and obviously a quarterback would be the Big you know the big focus. So I think when you look at it on offense It's really just you know replacing will replacing Trevion and quenchon and then and then how the offense line comes together And then again on defense. It's you know losing those those five guys, you know and seeing who's gonna step up in those areas Follow up on mat Trisha. Obviously you mentioned he's done a lot of different things schematically in his time What makes you confident that what he did you know me NFL will translate to the collegial loan?
I think a lot of things that are going on there's a trickle up and a trickle down effect right now and you're seeing a lot of that happening You're seeing a lot of guys transition. I think now more than in the past You guys you know probably focus on a little bit more than me But you know of what's going on in the NFL and what's going on in college? You're seeing a lot of carry over there and I think with the playoff system in place you're seeing that you're seeing the coach to communicate your host to player Communication you're seeing huddling more You know the hash marks are different and and there's certain rules that are different But there's a lot of similarities now. So I think it's gonna carry over well You see quarterbacks who run and were mobile in the NFL nowadays. So there's a lot more simulators now than in the past and you know being in the league for just a couple years, you know the transition isn't as Crazy as maybe it had been in the past Jeremy Mervingham the podcast right with your offensive staff being I mean you're almost 10 years older than everybody on staff except for That decision to when ship left to that impact your decision with the defense coordinator
I was there a thought that maybe you needed to go get somebody who is more of the hebco to the defense style based on In fact, you may have snow or time with the offensive Yes, I think that you need to have balance when you're looking at your entire staff and You try to do that the best you can And I believe very strongly that Brian's gonna do a great job as an offensive coordinator I think he's really grown in a lot of areas I gave him a lot of credit for you know, he was named coordinator a couple years ago. I still called the plays You know, then we brought in chip and his attitude of like I'm just gonna learn from chip in a big way and then Some of the work that he did keen and did and Billy did down the stretch and some of the past game and I think he's got you know a really good handle now on protections and even in the run game like he's ready to call it now But still gonna be involved still gonna just like I was last year Still gonna kind of make sure that you know, we're all on the same page having Tyler there was important But I think to your point, you know, I'm still gonna be involved with the offense
But I'm able to kind of bounce into the defense but the more times that we have guys who are experienced and veteran You know on that side of the ball. I'm gonna stay on offense It certainly helps and I think You know taking the play calling away last year was really important I want to continue to do that and surround myself with guys who you know We can hire to do jobs and I'm able to take a step back and take a little bit of a different role I think it helped the season and I'd like to you know do that even more as we move forward Rob all of this back. Yeah more on mat He clearly has credibility with his NFL But I'm just curious in your discussions with him interviews or whatever Why he decided to come back or come to colleges not really bending college Syracuse a little bit But how much of that was not a concern but a discussion point? You've got recruiting you've got a whole different culture How did that play out and what did he say that can kind of convince you that he really wants to be in the college?
I think you guys would get around that you'll see his personality You'll see the way he is you know just see you know what type of family man he is type of daddy is type of husband He is you know he did coach at Syracuse he and Tim worked together there But you know I I grew up in New England I obviously saw the run that they went on there and when you go on to run the way that they went on you know You stayed a place for a long time and you know I don't know if if that was you know something that maybe even early on he thought he was gonna be in the NFL for as long as he did but When you're around a great organization that goes on the run that they went on He ended up at a place for a long period of time and then you know he's there for a while and then has an opportunity to become a head coach Well now, you know, it's it's almost like a different mindset You know, it's maybe a little bit of a different chapter for him. It doesn't mean I'm sure he'll have an opportunity to go back to the NFL but You know, I think it's Ohio State. I think he understands the culture You know, we spent a lot of time talking and I think he sees the opportunity here and he's excited about it
I think it's a new chapter that he can absolutely come in here and make a difference And I think that's what he wants to do and I don't think the recruiting part is gonna be very difficult at all Any you you'll see it when you get around them Where are you with that? Here you are and You know, they're gonna have to compete and you know, we need to quarterback to be tough We need to be a leader. I've said this before they've had a great opportunity to watch well even Tavian You know because he was a big part of You know being around these guys last spring. I don't think he missed a spring practice He would come during the season for all the games He was with us for the last two weeks or the last two two games He was able to see what that looked like Lincoln was with him every day. Julian was with him every day So like that's that's the standard of what the leadership should look like Now they got to go do it and you know being the quarterback around here And I mean you start listening the guys who have been here most recently and down the in the history of Ohio State football. I mean you're in
You know, you're some of the best names who've ever played the game And but the biggest thing they have to do is they got a lead and they got to be tough So a long way to go on it. Don't have any evaluation to go with right now But it's it's gonna be a big spring for those guys Don't you heard me? How do you see the quarterback reps? Yeah, it's gonna be like a 40 40 20 or like are you expecting to bring that down early on? We're gonna try to roll I we're gonna try to go three groups so those guys get equal amount of reps You know will split up who goes where and even last year with will I mean we did that you know guys were getting reps with the ones Guys were getting reps the two's the threes you know the times where will was out there with the threes early on and just rolling because If you put one guy with the ones and two sometimes can look a little different because of you know the younger guys older guys So now we're gonna roll and and we're gonna try to get the best evaluation. We can we'll evaluate everything But specifically early on in the spring we want to roll those guys the best we can because the number one goal of spring is to get Individual players better. It's it. You know we can get scheme in and all that but fundamentally Technically, we've got to get better as football players
Then once we get into the summer we start putting the scheme together and we start coming with the chemistry of the team And in your higher process how big of that was Big big and I you guys can probably already see he's making an impact. He's getting guys here. He works hard at it You know he makes connections. He's build relationships. He can evaluate at a high level and I think he with You know with some of the guys that we have you know on the offensive staff together the year you started to see group recruiting there And so again world-housed state, you know We should have the best players in the country and he understands that And again, this is another guy the more you get around him. You'll see his personality just jumps out at you and the guys love being around them So you know, we'll see how the spring goes, but he's off to a good start Like the first thing is
His work ethic He's worked his tail off and when you evaluate You know coaches, you know, you got to work at it You got to be one of the first guys in the building. You got to be one of the last guys to leave. I mean you got to grind on it I think he's made the transition from being a player to a coach very well and quick peer to time his recruiting speaks for itself But to me the work ethic has been excellent The players relate to him. He has credibility He's got confidence, but but he's grown as a coach, you know, he's handled situations well He understands, you know, you know, we're on the headset. I think that's one of the things too that People don't realize like yeah, the play-caller is the play-caller, but like in between series man We need to get to this we need to get to this. It's third down. We're gonna get to this He's been on the headset and he's there saying we got to get to this. We got to do this like sees things makes adjustments in game But it's gonna be it's gonna be fun to watch him You know manage a group of people now because that's a big that's a big difference
You get all the coaches in there and now you're the guy who's got the clicker You got to make the adjustments. You got to challenge those coaches. You got to make the Tough decisions on personnel and where we're going schematically and you i'm still gonna be there But like you know, I've I've really tried to you know, let him go and run with this thing and so I'm excited to see you know, when you look at Brian When he's put his mind to something he's got it done and I believe he's gonna get this one done too Austin more podcast You know he he really um, I say this to a lot of the coaches when you walk in the building It's your job to bring value and I think sometimes some coaches wait To do things Billy jumped on it right away. He saw this as an opportunity and he took it and ran Um, because of the opportunity that that these coaches have not a coach in the field which they didn't have in the past Spend one on one time in meetings he took that and ran and which ship being the offensive coordinator You know, he quickly you know became the quarterback coach really last year and um
The good thing for for Billy is he was here before so he knows how we want to coach things He knows how we teach things he understands the progressions. He sees it the way that we see it So him walking in the building that was Um, he was a step ahead that way He's very smart his he works really really hard at it Uh, he's got a really bright future in the game and um, I think the guys in a room know him and so it was just it was easy and um You know for me it was it was good because we see this we we see things the same way And I believe that you know, I can walk out of the room and what what we want to get taught is gonna get done No, the you know another great evaluation this spring, but I saw it last year. I saw the work he did and um He's very very talented Ryan the with the makeup of the offensive staff being as young as It has there been past years we've had somebody like chibblast here. Kevin. Well, just wondering what kind of impact you think Having the much younger staff has I think it comes down to experience and now when you start looking at where you know Brian's not been here for a while and you look at you know, Tyler's coach a lot of football and and uh, you know
Lock and and you know, you know, you can keen and now it's getting a little bit older You know these guys now and now I'm more experienced than then they they didn't have passed um And again, I'm still gonna be there, but um, I think it the ultimately evaluated based on you know what you see and Um, you know, these guys just won a national championship here, you know, and the lot of coaches haven't done that So they've seen it they know it um and so You know, I think that you know, it comes down to your worth it comes down to you know what you've done And I got a chance to see it on a day-to-day basis and and I think these guys are excellent Of labories Kings of the North Ryan um In hiring matPatricia, he had a Sexual assault indictment in his past that did not go to trial and was later dismissed What was the discussion with math around that and what kind of vetting process did Ohio State go through? Yeah, so You know as you as you know, you know when we make these decisions, you know, we we spend a lot of time You know in the interviewing process and getting to know people and we always take everything into consideration and
You know that situation in particular, you know, ask a lot of questions vetted it Ross Bjork was part of those conversations and um, you know and feel really good about the hire and You know our program as you know is got great values and You know standards of how we handle ourselves which You know you get to see on a day-to-day basis and that's not gonna change God bill Rebellion's Columbus Dispash Yeah I know you were not gonna name any kind of frontrunner for the quarterback job, but um people have raved about the way Julian throws the ball Seems to have all all that A billy it seems to be kind of a low key guy How much do you want to see the fire in him and that was one of those biggest qualities? Is that almost more the bigger challenge for him than the football stuff? I think all three of them it's that way for sure. Yeah, I mean that that being a leader Um and showing that toughness and showing that fire and showing that grit is you know, will did a great job with that
So we're coming off the heels of that. So again, these guys got a chance to see that But yeah, I agree with you. I think that that's that's the biggest challenge and that's Mick does a great job of really fostering that behavior Enforcing those guys in the leadership role get them in front of the team and speak You know, you got to get going and that takes reps So the first few times it might be a little clunky. It may not be very good But the more you do it the more confidence you have and the more you get to find your voice and and that'll be important for the quarterback Because you know here Right when you have a coordinator like like Matt who Is on has a lot of success on the same side of the balls that had coach like with Mobile check How do you evaluate that and try to discern That coordinators impact as opposed to just like being in a very good situation. It's exceeded Yeah, and you know like you know, with Doug's quite like the the amount of time we spend vetting all those types of things to find out exactly what's going on and the history behind it all You know, you call the guys that he worked with you know and I think that's a great question
And that was you know, honestly one of my questions, you know, what did it look like and so you know You ask guys who were actually in the building, you know, Nate evidence one of them You know you ask coaches that he coached with I won't get into the names of the people you call But you you got to you got to make a lot of calls To find out you know about people and and you know what you found out was you know, I mean he was running the defense now certainly Coach had a you know a big hand in that and um But but as as time went on there, you know It was his show and it was certain a lot of collaboration there, but um, but you know, he's very very intelligent Really knows defensive football and the guys who played for him, you know, really felt like they were getting better Because of the way that he taught football fundamentally and I think even our guys in the building now And in a short period of time it's making a lot of sense to how he teaches the game. So Um, all those things were part of the evaluation and then make a decision Uh, Jeff Gilbert press groups Coach A year ago all the talk was um
National championship With everything you had in place this year's different That a discussion still is that too much pressure of this group. How do you handle Expectations with this team and as you often say you're not allowed to lose here. Yeah. Yeah. No, it doesn't change Our expectations don't change um But you know, I think whether it was last year the year before this year I mean that none of that stuff's ever gonna change um, and so you know, we're gonna go but I do think coming off a last year You get a chance to learn about your team. You get a chance to grow with your team um, but yeah, I mean, I think it's what a hundred and seventy six days or something until we play Texas I mean, it's it's commons right around a corner. I heard in 73. I think maybe I mean, it's coming and um, and we got to be ready to go with this team And this group that's just the way it goes and um, you know, we want to continue to stack these years and I've got to be playing our best football at the end of the season um, but yeah, I mean, that's that's not gonna change and um You know, I think last year with everybody coming back and you know, some of the additions that we made it correct sort of created a
A lot of attention nationally um, and that was what it was, but ultimately that that shouldn't have affected how we went about our work That's just stuff on the outside and you know, whatever they're gonna say about this team should affect how we go to work each day And how we start our first game All right, thanks You What's been most I think to you? We've got on the field about just the transition from playing
Um, I most I open the thing just like the game speed um, just I know I got a stoned up film so everything is slow down for me Um right now, but everything that's really just most I To you it's kind of a transition. We kind of settle down here. Um, just uh like like like coach learn I was they they played here I was staying before especially at the lineback position. So um, they know they know what to do and they know everything that it takes So um, just looking up looking up to them and doing what they do Uh, definitely I mentioned the game speed being a big difference. Is there been a moment? Then out of the practice field there in the way or whatever Um, not really just everything right now right now. He's just moving pretty fast room But I know I know since slow down pretty soon here here Mike right now. Oh, is there man? How difficult is there? How much more is that for you as a true freshman first spring also you're the middle linebacker Um, it's just just a responsibility uh getting everybody lined up getting the call
Um, but no in my assignment It's like I didn't know how it's just like up to you have a little bit more. So yeah, I just gonna take um some getting used to but I know I'm really I'm not just you think that's gonna help you in the ball What being Mike I think it's gonna be good um being able to be enough room around and uh just taking charge I'm definitely used to that comfortable with that. So I feel like it's gonna be good for me in the fall Does it help you learn a defensive scheme faster to have that much responsibility? Yeah, for sure I'm knowing knowing what everybody's doing uh and everybody's responsibility is getting to know how we play better What's a typical day like for a true freshman middle linebacker trying to learn the key points off the practice field off the practice field Just wake it up getting here early um probably probably watching the watching film you know We got we got uh practice or or weight so so when I get through that we got meetings so more more The game knowledge them got uh individual meetings so Just learning to learn in that more and then after that after that we got class and stuff. So after class we definitely
Stay on the film some more. What what film are you watching? What do you watch? Oh practice film practice film in the Yeah, you know knowing what I did wrong what I could improve on my head and learning new installs all of your tricks physically since it's a role. I definitely got a bit stronger For sure speed speed a little bit faster So you came in at what and you are at what now as far as weight? I came in at 212. I'm at 212 What's the target weight? I'm gonna take all your tentacles right now uh 233 Doesn't take me long day What are your expectations for your pressure every every time you get to chance to talk to James Lauren I say it's a nice thing to say about you What are your expectations for your first two? Just get on a field and making plays. I feel like I feel like that's good. You guys were changing me. I just want to get out there and make plays Describe your game. It's a lot better. Um, I think I think um, I can do a little bit of everything I can cover I can rest faster. I can play to run to um, I think I think those I'm
I'm sorry. I have those are all my strength Um, yeah, I think I think my strength As usual a big Texas flavor on this team a lot of Texas guys guys It's been like here for like the last 10 years. Um, that's got to make you feel kind of at home Yeah, I talked more about that if you would um, just takes us guys You know, you know, football is really big in Texas and so So uh with with that Texas. Oh, how pipeline. I'm knowing I got guys from Texas. I'm I love I love it Stay to the goal line Yes, and the time sign for that What is it just inspired you to see what Cody Simon was able to do here last year not only as a player but as a leader? Um, that that that that's definitely something I look forward to um becoming and um being up being up and doing those things That that Cody did Cody did the way he played all the plays and made my I feel like it's a good Aiming for me. What kind of example is sunny setting for right now? Uh sunny the
His position is switched from safety to my back. I feel like um The the way that he played last year being his first year linebacker. I feel like Like I feel like if he could do it, I could do it so you know I that's definitely getting some you have a lot of experience playing safety. Uh, yes, I'm really seeing my freshman year You There's there's a lot of motivational factors Obviously you want to win this you want to win an actual chip, but how do you keep that same kind of edge mentally that you had in a Tennessee game to give that kind of offence and performance? Yeah, that's the challenge man is uh is keeping that edge and I think we play well when we have that underdog, you know kind of chip on our shoulder mentality
And that's what we came out with last game and and you know, that's the challenges You know, how do we not listen to any of the good stuff right now because You know the same people that are patented on the back were you know, you know, beaten us down two weeks ago So you just got to remember that and remember to not you know not eat any of the sugar and just you know keep keep our heads down and keep grinding and keep having that same edge and that same mentality And it really starts with how we practice I think You were the one who kind of takes advantage that that's not like a play calling thing that's what you so when you see hey You've got a couple guys over there. What's that you for what you see on the rest of the field and what you're receiving processes? Yeah, anytime, you know a defense has to put two guys over one I mean that it's either creating matchups elsewhere or giving you numbers in the box Whatever it is you got to you got to be able to work with it and see it and and uh You know, I wouldn't be surprised if you know people are gonna start bracketing number four I'd probably do it too
But you know you got it you can't forget about 17 and two and 88 and I mean shoot we got we got guys elsewhere So it's you know if you try to take one of them out of the equation and you know, we got we got Other dudes that are gonna step in and make plays too So I mean and that's the thing. I mean you can double him and he's he'll still go and make make some plays So you know, that's our all part of the chess game and like I said, you know playing a team twice Becomes even more of that you know back and forth chess game. How you know, how are we gonna scheme them up and vice versa and But you know at the end of the day it all comes down to execution and and Find in the matchups where we can and take an advantage of what they give us Hey, well, you talk a lot about momentum in the playoffs So what kind of an advantage does that give for team like yours against a team that hasn't played since the big time challenge Yeah, you know, I can't speak for them because you know, they they obviously have had a little more time off But you know in terms of us I think playing that first game did give us a little bit of momentum and and feeling good going into this next game and
You know if I was coming off of four weeks of rest, I don't know it'd be a little little weird coming out here and playing the first game But you know, we said we wanted to get that first one and then get this ball rolling from there and and and keep this thing going and You know, I think I can't speak for them. I don't know but but we feel good, you know about where we're at Yes, he is pretty much, you know, they got to put like three or four guys over him for him to not be open Yes, he's he's unbelievable man He makes makes some some pretty crazy plays and can do some Great things off the line of scrimmage and then you know when the balls in the air he Goes and gets that thing so I mean he's yeah, he's special Off the war Specific to the last play in the early game, but when you're talking about rematch in a second shot how many times do you think you Watch the duration of the first matchup as you're doing a film preparation
Maybe that was two weeks after the game as well with the off-week but also now Time to prepare for Wednesday. Yeah more times than I can count man It's we got the game plan in the facility here. So nobody's forgot about it You know, I watched it quite a few times that by week afterwards You know what? Know how could I fix it and then you know at the same time you want to you want to flush it and and get away from it But now you know that they're that they're back, you know They're the squad we're playing. It's like, you know, I have watched it and and you know it hurts me because I'm like man Like there was so many opportunities for us to win that game and and you know looking back at it It's like man. We did we just didn't play our best ball that day and You know, it just it makes you excited, you know because you know, we got another chance at it and like I said you don't get a lot of second chances in life and God's blessed us with one and No, so we we got to make sure we take advantage of it and it's a it's a hell of a team and I mean Oregon's a great team They do some some really good stuff man, and you know, it's not gonna. It's not gonna be easy
You know, but we got to go in there and and you know Do our thing and and you know take what they give us and and impose our will because that's that's the only way we can do it from here on out They played six on the instance, so they probably change the personnel is gonna be different First back out there. What's the balance for you? Where you can watch yourself against them or the other systems they played since then what's the Great equation I don't know if I have that answer You know, I went on watching film. I'm watching a bunch of different film and you know our our game is one of the games they played So I'm gonna be watching that a bunch and then also watching the other games they played because You know, it's they have changed a little bit and we've changed a little bit and you know Nobody's just gonna stay the same every every you know every every every week you're upgrading you're trying to become a new version of your team So we got to you know evaluate where we're at where they're at and and see what the best method of Trying to figure that out is
Well, you were certainly quite effective passing against them What does make their corners effective though? They're both five foot ten That's relatively small compared to your receivers. What what makes them pretty effective a corner? I think they're uh, they're very athletic and They you know, they're not as as physical as some of the other corners we played against You know, they're not trying to like put their hands on you at the line But they are very good shadow guys and they're you know, they stay with they stay with guys and they stay over top of Of dudes and they don't like to you know get beat over the top and and I don't think they get beat very often You know, obviously they're going against their their playmakers every day Which you know, they got some they got some fast dudes over there You know, I think they're I think they're both great players. I think sevens You know, I played against him when he was at Oklahoma state. I think he's a he's a he's a good player. He's solid They're both They're both solid players, but you know, I think I think we got we got an advantage physically a little bit That we need to need to take advantage of and make sure that we don't let them just you know stick all over us and
You know, I'm not worried about that, but You know, they got good players and we're gonna have to show up and and win our one-on-ones Let's go to Cameron T. Robinson from the athletic Hey, well, I think it was a little earlier in the the pressure You said that obviously you guys have changed you guys are a different team, but for you How are you different from that from since since that since that awarding game? Yeah, I think you know You try to evolve every every week and you try to learn from the And the good things and from the bad things and you know, I don't know if I could say You know one one thing about you know where I've gotten better at you know what I've gotten better at Maybe you know my completions, you know, just trying to take take with the defense gives me Trying to get get smarter with that with my decision-making as the years gone on And just get more comfortable in the system. I think it is is another part of it You know, I don't think there's one thing I can necessarily put my finger on but You know just trying to learn from from the good and from the bad and and you know evolving every single week
We have one more zoom call go ready associated press Well, what's a bent like having chip Kelly is your offensive coordinator and just how is a relationship developed and Maybe improved during the year. It's been really good man. He's a super bright guy run game past game I mean he's coached, you know some of the some of the best players That I've you know grew up watching and you know, I think just getting to work with him and just getting to be on the same page with him about a lot of things You know the more that this year has gone on we've kind of just you know, I feel like we're in sync right now pretty pretty damn well and You know, we both kind of see things the same way sometimes, but then we were able to you know have that healthy discussion of you know What you know, what what do you like here? What do you not like here? You know, I think our relationship has just gotten better and better as a year has gone on I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with him and working with him and I think you know We've we've we've had a good time with it and we want it. We want to finish this thing the right way
Is there a quarterback that he coached it? I mean you liked or took after? Oh, I mean I wouldn't say necessarily one of them But you know, I did grow up you know when I was an Eagles fan and he was the coach of the Eagles So you know, I've seen him what you know, he's brought up clips in the in the quarterback room of you know some of the Eagles stuff, so that was pretty cool I don't think there's I wouldn't say there's one quarterback. I emulate my game after necessarily but You know, yeah, it's it was cool kind of the first time and I was like oh damn. He you know coach the Eagles back into this pretty cool Maybe I'm making too much of this but I think I'll Jeremiah's second touchdown I think before the stab you like looked over there a couple of times I don't know can you just walk us through what you were seeing and did that play just ultimately turned into oh my god He's one on one covered with one safe camera throwing it up. Yeah, so on that play I'm looking at where the safety is and if the safety gets over top of him I'm not gonna throw it to him if he's not over top of him. I'm gonna throw it to him
He didn't get over top him so I was just making sure that they were Crazy enough to leave him one on one and they were so And by as much as bill or been with Kind of along those lines. I mean when you see him In man's cup for what I want is it almost like automatic? I'm throwing to him. It's an easy position if we we got it called yeah Yes, pretty much. I mean there's quite a few routes where you know if it's a it's an excisolation or you know one on one concept and You know if we have one on one with him or really you know you leave any of our receivers one on one and it's Pretty hard to guard But Jeremiah just seems like out of different level but anybody especially the Frenchman You guys have that appreciation like oh man this guy is special when he's a Frenchman Yeah, I mean I think you forget about it a lot You know when you're around it every single day you kind of forget that the kids was in high school a year ago You know he just doesn't you just around him you don't feel like he's a high school kid
You don't feel like he's an 18-year-old 19-year-old like he's He's just mature beyond his years and yeah, he's he's special man. He's different. I've never seen a kid his his age I've really never seen anyone Be able to do some of the stuff that he's able to do so You know, I've only been here for you know 12 months or whatever, but yeah, he can do some some pretty unbelievable stuff Well, thank you very much. Thank you guys go bucks I feel like when you get here. It's just it's a whole other level Um, he's gonna keep coaching well. He's gonna be hard on you He's gonna tell you what you're doing. Okay, just gonna tell you what you're doing wrong and uh, you're just gonna push you to be your best Yes, moving all over yes Crazy I feel like I knew that they were gonna do it from the beginning of the season I feel like they always had the potential and then uh, they came out here that did it and the freshmen we had a Opportunity to sit there and watch it so I feel like now we just gotta do it again. What did you learn from back?
It's watching about me just it's all hard work and it's just a bunch of guys and it's really a brotherhood And it's really just our family versus their family and we just got a person beer and we got to win the games and get back to the net I'm sorry line The pote art line was saying that car and Alan ran in the really good leaders and the brunt so far sure What if how have they both been leaders for you and me every young savers? They've been leaders just in multiple ways whether our column We're in there in the film room together on the jugs I'm asking them about this route. How I could run it better. I'm asking them how I run this route on this play Just many different things. I feel like those guys They're like big brothers and all that does help me It's real valuable for sure because they're they're first round pit guys So I feel like just being in a room with those guys and if you're able to thrive with those guys, you know something's going good for you
I had a I always had a good relationship with Tavian He recruited me hard to come here So I feel like we always talked and He came here and he's been doing this thing they've all been doing their thing and julie is saying he's another cally kiss So I had a little relationship with him too. So good to see julie and link and take me all doing real good I just really just everything I feel like you can never be too perfect and I feel like you just gotta keep doing your job So I say maybe just Just showing up more and just doing my job to the tee High school in high school I had a five star corner DJ DJ on Lee. He's at Alabama So I always had good work with corners. So I feel like it's just a lot I'm going against a lot of good guys now instead of just being one on one that practice with DJ So it's real good for sure Is it take more turns to play the slot?
Said again, please take more courage to play the slot. What do you mean by that? Because there's more stuff but they think there's bigger injuries inside you have to have You gotta be aware of it, but it doesn't make more courage to do that Um, I guess you can say that I feel like I just always play slot and I feel like that's what I've been better at so I feel like I feel like it's just what I have to do to be on the salt no matter who's in front of me how big he is How strong he is I feel like if I got an assignment I gotta do it Okay That's what tackles a position that draws a lot of focus arguably based on the pressure than the position on the line In European what is what is the proper mindset to succeed At that position? I think that the mindset for me as always has been um that when I win my But one on one the ball goes down the field you know what I mean um so And I think that's what I'm most excited about just being a left tackle is that Especially with the protections that are a little bit
A longer plays where the left tackle tends to be A one on one or my My the plays I tend to love the most because kind of like halfway through the play We're locking them up and just know that he can't go anywhere Start to smile a little bit. You're like oh dude balls gone You know what I mean like balls gone and it's gonna be a touchdowns gonna be a huge gain just um So I think for me that's kind of the mindset you kind of have to have the left tackle spots that as soon as I win like My rep we're going down the field So um that's just the mindset I have in terms of how well I have to prepare Honestly, I'll say that mindset kind of came from college Again, obviously I played with a lot of great guys in college, you know, and glad we have all those guys here You know what I mean? To throw the ball to as well just because against one of those things like with CJ You just again a left tackle my mind was just Well as CJ just do his thing and that's my thing
I want Kyle to be able to do his thing Don't worry about whoever's over here. Just do your thing. That's why you're here and just throw it to Marvin And you know and we'll be and we'll be good. You know what I mean? So that's something excited about and I think all that starts because of what we do on the line So and I think just not just myself but the entire room takes pride in Hey like when we do our job up front that's where everything else goes So let these guys we have with the ball in her hands Do all that all that magic we just got to Just do our job just contain it when you're one-on-one, you know We're just planning that that spot and mean something special just because of the the history of that position and you know Just of all the great set of play left tackle. I mean you ever think about just The past and they you know the people the players before you who were in that spot and did great things Yeah, I mean again, I feel like just from Just as a young guy in a game. I of course try to I like to watch the the greats the game. I like to watch guys like
A weight worth of course, you know A willy Anderson, you know, he played on the right side, but again um, I think continuing to watch the greats that played the game just contain the dominate for those guys from me be able to talk to them again to be able to Learn from their store in their journey and how they developed of course I understand I want to create a I want my game to be able to be like there's an away to where it's talked about In a way of like that's a guy you need to watch just to watch with you know the fight that you played with the finish that you played with and the technique you played with Because those guys played almost 20 years You know what I mean? So and again, I think that's something when you watch the guys though the legendary guys come before Yeah, you know, they're strong they're tough guys, but you know, I don't know, but when you're like 36 37 years old you probably not that's Not as strong as you used to, but that technique and just the skill set that's something that I admire You mentioned earlier about the guys going out to UCLA and kind of getting out of the heat. I'm curious
When you're working out here, do you do do anything outside or do you avoid it altogether right now? I don't know. I'm always outside. I'm always outside. I'm honestly. I don't mind the heat. I love the heat And honestly for me it helps I'm off like 320 so I kind of warm up quickly So it's kind of nice for my warm up. I don't have to be doing like 30 minute warm up You know, you kind of just be outside long enough collect this And your joints are on go so um, I actually I I like it Go going back to the players that have been in the league for a while Calvin Beach him is one of those guys That's been the league for a decade plus. What have you been able to learn from him? I think again just learning how to be a pro in terms of in terms of certain things like for example I'm a guy that when I like to train by myself I'll just take a thousand reps of a set a thousand reps of a Reach block. I'm a rep rep rep rep and type thick. I've done a hundred times in a row perfect And some of that beach is like talking about in terms of being a pro and it I thought to me that's me being a pro
As a young guy fake. I've a lot of I reps in my body. So I'm going to take a lot of reps and prepare preparation But beach is a guy where it's like it's not about necessarily that the quantity in terms of it's really through the quality But but even more so he's like you know, you're off season. You don't got to be doing something like this every single Day, but when you do it like from your first rep even your first rep is not like you're I'm taking this rep Oh, it wasn't good because it's gonna be better on the second one like each rep even when you're by yourself is just kind of I guess I'm a mindset like just give yourself 15 reps instead of doing 60 reps You know sounds like a huge difference, but then you out of mind taking 60 reps from by myself and there's nobody Does waiting around on me and I'm by myself. I can I'll take my time and I'll do that. It's just being like I'm gonna do 15 Perfect reps and I'm just gonna slow down and take all my time With stuff like that that way your body. I way or not You're not you're not doing too much before Can't you know
Many of the guys have left guard in the mix. We're here last year except forever How does that relationship develop throughout Yeah, I mean, so honestly, I like that that's my guy. We like to compete We've been competing in the weight room since day one in terms of just like what we consider like athletic competitions So like even in the weight room mom at the very end of the week When we're done lifting I'll I'll talk to Evan. I bet now you're standing. We'll just do Some sort of competition whether it's grip or whether it's jumper where it's pull-ups or something And I don't let him leave until I beat him in all these two things Like so if we do if we do a jump thing and like I've always thought was the best kind of I the most height when I jumped out of O line I could dominate anybody and that but he beat me in that Surprising size of art. No, we're hopping on the bike And then we did this bike thing. I beat him on a bike. My right now we don't pull-ups. I'll beat him on a personal kid now We can leave You know what I mean, but like we just have that that and we're just always just competing and um and then again
Obviously, you know, he wasn't on the team with us Last year by think what he brings at the table with being of that is that he's like a plug and play guy You know, he knows he's been in those scenarios before He's played with guys like Penae when he was with Detroit So obviously just being able to talk to him and how this is how it was when I was setting with Penae This is how it was on same to see Hawks. These are the different things that I can do that mirrors some things like in your game How you set and I'll talk to him about what I like to do in certain scenarios and how his set can sort of Match that. Does that make sense? So I think he adds a lot To the point to where a stranger is like you guys got to go like yeah, you guys you guys should go You know, we're not trying to we're not trying to break any rules around here Um, but you know, but it's just me and him just going and he loves it You know, so and even us starting to do that we started to get other guys in the O line that tried to hop in on our competition for fun
But only matters what be Evan. It's just I'm just beating you, you know So it's fun You Yeah, I think this is probably the biggest year is better than not sure and even even though having a great year last year Is just that the buy-in is just It's in my unimaginable how good that we want to be like we want this bad and I think all of us coming together and all of us coming back this year It's just it's a group understanding that we want to come and we're coming with a handle of business There's nothing more than just business A lot statistically you can do to get better. So where improvements can you guys make?
Um, I think the improvements we need to do I mean playing good throughout the year But when the big games come we got to play I mean, that's the way how to be the best we can't rely on anyone else It has to be the defense that really runs the show half the time and half the offense Got carry motor back and how to do the day-do and I don't have to worry about us Like let no points or anything like that. So definitely big games. We have to we have to come Yeah, definitely feels like a big difference We just got a lot of guys. We got a lot of good special talent And you know, you just gotta find a way to get these guys on the field and it's just I have a lot of new guys. We gotta definitely bring them in and definitely find like it's Find a deal with them get a chemistry with them And he just bring the defense closer than we were last year and that's one of my main goals He's just a worker. He's been working For as long as he's been here and he's just you want to keep trying to find ways to get better every single day
And I just one of the things I have plotted for He's very passionate. He's very passionate about getting this back, you know, he just he hasn't as hard And being being a kid for my house just like me is just having a passion for one to win Like you're playing for the Ohio State University and you want to you want to win you don't want to have to Have to settle for anything less What you see for them in the second half of the last season Teen seems like things really put for him down the stretch and that Minnesota game. Yeah, it's Michigan and Missouri Oh, yeah, I think it just I mean, he just have to be bothering I mean as a unit together We just wanted to do better. We want to be better every single game And I feel like you just understood that and every time we went in he just knew that we were playing for each other So he went out there he played he stopped thinking stop thinking less than just going and he just played and the play showed out for him Because the card is a player to I guess it's that player The game comes natural you're not thinking so much Oh, yeah, I think it definitely comes with experience
I mean usually players play better towards the end of the season because they have more experience than being out there So when you play more, you usually know more what's going to happen So let's say it'll be easier to be out there rather than thinking and most of the time You look I'll just Sit the whole how guy just what does this mean? I mean you're here in a third or four years just What does it mean to take pride in what's going on? I'm just a special feeling to me and it feels like I have like the whole city on the back on my back Just being able to be out here and just it's a blessing to be Playing for the Ohio State University. So I mean why the cherish every single day just treat like my last The third year under coach building guys feel like you got The defense Interpolized and know every fit of what you know I guess Yeah, I think they've been the third year. I mean as defense. It's just like right now. It's just fine tune a little things I mean everything we're stuck we're very glue we're glue with everyone with all the plays and stuff right That's what we just fine tune and low things that we can get better at and pretty much just bringing in the
With anything new that we have just bring it in and really bring it together. So, yeah, I think we're good Guys that really start to come on they're gonna be Give me guys some extra playing time against this year I think a lot a lot of guys are really pushing forward to breathe playing a lot of interior guys like hero Came McDonald guys like that will some of all the guys back there. They're really pushing it to play I mean anybody in a defense line could play right now I feel like I see gather together as a union and make each other better every single day That's what's gonna make everyone cuz we're trying to get this year to everybody to play everybody needs to play You good You know what do you feel like you can do this year as a fifth year guy to take your game next level? Right now it means just I mean stepping into a fifth year of being here. Wow. It's a leadership role I feel like being a leader in here. I really have to push the younger guys and really have to step up for the mean
I've been here the one long time. So I feel like Really elevating the guys to below me Really making them better because if I they can play just as good as I can play then we're gonna be on top of them How does it help you play with confidence when you have so many veterans around you guys that you've played with so much? Uh helps us because it just has this chemistry thing So let's be in together for so long. I mean being in the system for so long. It's like it's natural So we go out there. We don't have to think too much. We just go out there and play because you know we got each other For you was it an easy decision to come back for another year? Was did you have to think about it? Uh definitely I have to think about it a little bit But I think all of us coming back we all had to understand that we have we still have something here We need to finish this unfinished business that we need to take care What are the biggest things that you feel like you can do this year to you know help yourself get to that next longer? Uh definitely think just playing harder just having more experience to be out there playing the game And being out there more and just refining my thing my technique and stuff like that Just being able to be out there and make more place I mean just being in the right position at the right time Does a defensive line in the hole like what do you guys you know have specific goals for yourself this year?
How you think you can get better as a unit? All right now we don't have specific goals. I mean right now like I said We're just working on technique. We're working on the little things because little things are in a big thing So right now we're just trying to get the small and fine detail refining because we're gonna make we're gonna go out there And we go you can go on need those we get in the game You mentioned your leadership. How have you seen the depth behind you start to develop this spring? Uh definitely coming together. I mean there's a lot of guys. There's a lot of guys really growing up and so they're really pushing pushing the ranks right now and this is me as I can say it anyone could play I mean just just the way they work every single day any guy could come in and play in a position So is there anyone who's really jumping out to you so far with spring? I mean all the guys I mean jumping out I mean we've only been two practices so far But I think all the guys are really working. It's like a group unit that everybody's pushing hard so Next time Thanks, Ty. You're welcome. All right. I don't know where Jay ran off to but I leave me oster
Really matter what you pull those two then if they can both play both In the slot. Yeah, yeah, you do because you you you have specific job responsibilities within those But they become more interchangeable and fluid in how you can function with those pieces You know, it doesn't it's not like a true strong or a free safety You know, I mean those guys are able to Complement each other and you have more flexibility within your packaging to put those guys in position to make place Yeah It is time we saw him on Saturday running with the ones Mm-hmm Yeah, he's been a guy that's been on the rise, you know to me from where he was when he started Spring ball to where he is now. He's made more plays at practice his eye discipline is better His understanding of the defense is better Um, which allows you to be able to play free and be able to play fast So that's what I've seen so far and I can I expect that to continue Oh He's been great. He's been great. He first off. We do a thing where we track
How well you run to the ball every practice one of the things that we grade right? So you can talk about all the schematics that you want coach knows has all that But if you're not running to the ball, you're not playing good defense, right? So we tracked that and he's one of the guys that every single Practice is one of our highest grade guys run it to the ball So he's been awesome from an effort standpoint first attitude. He's in early. He puts the work in And he's made a bunch of plays out here So now I'm excited about Jay on the client for sure To the ball you mean like he's ball hockey really well in the back end or is it I know it's for the football running game or both Yeah, so we're really tracking effort and how hard a guy's playing from there is what we do But I would say this too he's been around the ball a lot right with his alley running and he's Downing the ball and on a break through run or fitting gaps things like that And then he's got really good range in the post or the half too So he's done a good job of of both of those things. I guess all the above Hmm Yeah, I do I do and you know, it's been an opportunity for you have a couple guys that are
Are out there so you're able to continue to grow the depth and be able to see what guys can do and you have increased reps from that standpoint So I do feel confident you know, I feel confident in the guys that You know how they've performed so far this spring and the guys that haven't been out there I feel confident from what their abilities are what I've seen on film and then the the mental preparation from that standpoint Now I would go back to refer to you know what late them was like a couple years ago and taking that same blueprint Yeah, he's done um, I would say the uh the mental side I would say is if you took he is really good physical skills you see him when he walks on the field I mean he's a Yeah, no doubt I would say the mental side of the game right really understanding what's the defense? What's my eye progression? Where do I fit into this chess piece? You know, what what's my chess piece in this whole match? That's happening and uh, yeah, I've been pleased with him and he's putting the work in to make sure he understands what's going on Here
I wouldn't say weird. I'd say it's great right and uh Because his preparation is so high level It challenges you as a coach to be an elite teacher right because he's gonna be on his game It's like coaching a professional player right he understands the concepts in the game so well He's put so much time into it. There's a coach you better be matching or equaling that right going above and beyond that because if not He's gonna be a step ahead of the coach right so that's uh, it's been awesome to be able to push each other to make each other better He's got a great understanding and feel for the game. He's a great young man The work ethic is really high level so every value that you would look for not just for a skill or in tangible Sing that but who he is the person I can't say enough about who Caleb downs is it's been awesome Yep What's his what do you want to see from him? Maybe it's leadership maybe it's on the field I don't know what is it for yeah, I think I think our leadership is definitely something right He's a guy that's been there done that um has accomplished a lot
But not the goals that he wants to yet So I would say from a leadership standpoint and holding guys accountable and he's done that at a really high level Um, and then his own preparation. I've been impressed with uh, you know If you're not taking as many physical reps what are the mental reps that you're taking and he's done a really good job of Having daily routine putting the time in making sure that he's Carp is free with everything so I would say the off the field stuff is a you know a step in the right direction What did you what did you take away from your experience life? Since we last saw tonight you've been through multiple spring practices. What did you learn? Something in your time or when or just for you as a coach that that you brought here to bring the safety of your mission? Yeah, um, I think that you Learn different ways to be able to do things whether it's taking the ball away or tackling methods or you know The way that it's taught from other defensive coaches So to learn from a different tree and thought process and philosophy You know, I try to I pride myself on being a teacher Which means that you better always be learning right? Are you getting behind? So I would say um
Yeah, just different ways to be able to maybe do similar techniques or things that have to be done from a defensive principle standpoint And then you know bringing that to the table as you step back and you say okay I've always done it or I've done in the gym knowl system right and then you're in a different defensive system and How does that get executed and then you can blend some of those or pick what you know what you like from there So a chance to reflect that say did you feel like you accomplished what you wanted to Away from the gym knowl system to bring it back to the gym knowl system Yeah, I mean I think anytime that you're No matter where you're coaching right you have Principles of defense and a way to be able to play defense whether you're how you tackle or how you play the red zone or different things like that There's metrics to be able to track that and and some improvement was made um Not enough of my opinion you only move it there were there were strides from from that standpoint and then yeah When you come back into it you say okay The system here has developed in a year that I was gone right and then maybe I'm able to develop a little bit as a a coach to and From a positional coach or a coordinator mindset things like that and then you're able to mesh ideas and come back and you learn
Hey, what's the new that's happened over a year and then I was able to see the big 10 from a different lens as well You know, so I think that's valuable It's kind of how do you feel about your death in that position right now? Yeah, it's something that um You know, we've we've addressed and say hey here's the guys that have played here's the guys that haven't played Who's taking the reps right now and How do we grow those guys you know from mass standpoint? So I think that's a work in progress every single day. So I've been pleased with the guys. I think there's been a um On the you know, steadily on the rise approach from everybody in the room You know, so I've been pleased with the guys and the progress that they've made So I feel good about it And I expect that to continue throughout spring and then continue throughout summer and into fall camp You know from that standpoint. Yep. Yeah, uh jayden bonds is taking advantage of the opportunity that he's had Jail and the claims taking an opportunity, you know, I've managed the opportunity Inky had a really good day today. You know, it's taking advantage of the opportunity So the guys that you know, are taking reps, you know, I'm pleased with watching those guys You know continue to progress, you know, and the Caleb I think is you know learned our system and done really well and gotten better every day
All right, thank you. Thanks. Appreciate it guys The game the intensity, you know, I've said a thousand times the He doesn't get incrementally faster or stronger the game mentally slows down for him so he can use his skill set that way So what is that we're talking about? That's his weight. That's his strength because those numbers are going up So he can play with more pillar strength. He can play more contact. He can play more comfortable Even though his 40 time didn't go from a 5-0 to a 4-8 He just jumped right in Um, unbelievable job both ways of him just coming in with shelving the ego that he had he really had none and walking in saying I'm walking into a room as we told him we recruited him like you're coming into a room bunch of good dudes And then our good dudes are good dudes. He came in and there was no It's like you're here. Here's how we do. Here's how we operate and let's go And so that learning curve for all those whether it's a high school mid-year guy or a veteran mid-year guy
It transfers in there's a learning curve there Just you know circling back the way had natural maturation a little bit because he's been through a little bit of spring boy He's been through a little bit of camps So you're still learning the terminology. You're learning a new skill set But he just dove right in and wanted to be a sponge and wanted to learn. He's doing a good job And he's improving every day, you know So that's what's making the battle and the competition and all these great it snaps really You know good for us is because they all have that mindset so from Seth awesome The unit in the group awesome because there was no Combattentness to it. It was let's get in the scolding's competing and let the guys win Just learning the same deal a young guys you're coming you got to learn how to play in friction So having you know three tech having a two-eye having those guys like right in front of you That every time you take one of those reps and you're out of your base or you're in your base. You feel the good you feel the bad So being more consistent that way You know, you can't make moves or shift guys if they're not mentally there
And so for him he's got a pretty good football fq So he's continue. He's growing every day He's working and he's getting beat every day too and he's learning from those You know so in the spring time, you know, we have saying in our room we're like in the spring It's yes, and it's no and I know it's KNOW why didn't the rep work what happened and how do I make sure I don't repeat the same mistake And so whether he's coming in and watching the tape on his own and then come with questions He's grabbing me and watching tape with me or we're coming doing stuff as a unit. He's learning So that same deal the game can slow down and he gets more comfortable there in friction So I mean he's his weights up his strengths up. He's spending all season with Mick You know, there's a lot of development that still has to be had Obviously not a finished product But being able mentally for a guy to handle that you know helps a lot Luke a leaner guy did you tell him that he paid you to say that That might be the first time you ever heard that in his life. No
No, um You know like at Luke Carson Whoever maybe that that jump of 18 to 19 and 19 to 20 year old kid that plays a lot into it too Being in a full year with Mick. I mean all those guys you come in and mid you're like your devo and and Dion and Ian more right now You're keeping your head above water That's your whole first year and now you can actually get and we can sit so when you sit and talk about a jam combo or a lock or whatever the call Maybe to Luke he registers that and I like Something new because then there's paralysis by analysis So I think the middle part on top of another year natural maturity of getting bigger and stronger. That's always gonna help You're not gonna guys here. They're not gonna regress It's gonna keep adding progress and how fast can we get that going as well? We're working on every day with him But Josh said that he would have been all guard to this point and coach days mentioned this several times that Josh could play guard to And you guys are trying to work through that fire Now he's I mean Josh could play off five. I mean he snapped the ball in high school
Um, you know Josh had a great offseason But for you when you're going to your spring and it's Fact finding and experimentation how much do you want? Just put them in different spots or not Because you also have an eye on August to try and settle on five What's the balance of that for you? You have to get a really good Gradable set so that everybody has numbers of you know, just like we said before how many times have we done? A run blocking or pass blocking in this situation so that that all evens out So that's the it's not experimentation It's just making sure that you get a good book of work to work out and grade that So as we you know work guys around the platoons and go just to make sure that everybody gets good gradeable reps So we can sit back by the end of spring and say all right This is your comparing apples to apples and oranges oranges and not you know apples oranges because it's completely different that way So that's kind of the thought behind that as you as you're going through the spring Not laughed You know, but then I said you know, it's college football so who knows right
What's up in like I mean He just added to another piece of just good people here I mean you still you're coming to work here with guys every day You know what the kids we talk about a ton but then for us as coaches as staff so add in just another good dude That's in the room Obviously as he says something and you know, he might speak in old terms or terms that we had You know, maybe be a little bit of a rosetta stuff like no, no, this is this is like yeah, that's right Because that's that happens to all coaches that happen to me when we got here first. I was at what coach day sometime with Ryan's like You know, what do we call this because he was in a system like that before he saw this is this now So I think just the you know Translation of a rosetta stone there help but just overall standpoint of adding a great guy That's a great coach. It's been around. That's he's gonna supplement the room and every time you add something new to the room Then that makes the room better makes you individually better. Oh look how he does that Maybe I could do that. Maybe I can bring that to my meeting room. Maybe I can bring that to
Communication to the staff or to the kids or whatever it is because he's He's done it for a long time and he's done a high level for a long time So it's good to add that guy to us and then continue as us to rest the staff for me and Brian and key and and and everybody just learn and grow with that Aspect Well, I mean, but you're saying so what does he see? It's good to have fresh eyes come in that maybe you know you get in a routine and you get in a rhythm and all of a sudden Football you know, he's one of those guys. I think goes into categories. Forgotten a lot of football and some people have learned in their life But no his he I believe he coached every position on the field both sides of ball through his whole career So as he looks up and he writes when he's talking about well this will linebacker is gonna do that Then he might have coached that at Columbia right or this is what the three techs gonna read on the down block of a tackle
Because he's coached the offensive line and he's been a coordinator for a long time So just a really good vision of big picture understanding and You know the next step and not just being right now. Yeah But Yeah, it was competing his butt off. I mean, he's kind of living that way You know, that's why we have that the the the red line over there when you cross the line You know, of course they talks about that here like that It's the game doesn't care you're off the field you got to come out and step out and do your job It doesn't care about anything off the field right and that can sound really negative and harsh But then it also if you just spin your tone like Isn't it beautiful that the game doesn't care? It doesn't care your skin color your socioeconomic background where you've come from
If you just want to do it the right way in the 53 and a third the game will love you back You know, so I think it's the approach mentally the guys take that way So yeah for tegrida he's he's taking that approach like he he wants to come in and be a guy So he's fighting and clawing and scratching every day. So when he makes a mistake He's trying to correct it when he does it well. He's trying to enhance it Um, and that's what competitive people do and that's what he showed up to do So I that's good that he said that What's his come on the field been like as a center? And is that difficult when you're coming into a new offensive line to have that? Where's there something made about the center position if you've been experienced at it like he has where you kind of have that I guess With any offensive line. So I should say it over it start over again You're saying the comfort of center with who now? Uh, Seth. Okay. Yeah, I'm saying like how has his he's command of the field been and hasn't been difficult I guess to adjust for him if he's to have a certain level of on field command You know at that center Yeah, I mean it's the on command is just great communication getting everybody on the same page
Um, yes having a bunch of banked reps helps But then when you do come into a new offense Just like we talked you know chip a little bit earlier um, you know, he might have called it yellow and we call it green or something I don't just make it stuff up but the transition of that in your head to get going with that But yeah the comfort of having a ball in your hand having a guy I mean you talk about that Accommodation of football like play one handed and have you know, tie leak this far from your face You better have command of something, you know, and so you got to understand the communication and the technique and those things there So yeah, I think him coming into a new place the game's not as fast as it probably would be for a younger guy But also there's mistakes there that he can learn from and grow from and and same day He's you know the the one thing we're not Having concerns with or we're not driving right now as the guys just competing and and trying to get better after a mistake Or like we say with that we're enhancing as they've done some stuff really well and he's he's adapted to that really well
For sat and They both have been ripping its center. Yeah For the competition aspect could they roll out and play guard yet probably both of them could How do you assess that you just got to give them a bunch of guard reps? But if you thin guys out too much that way then that's not good coaching, you know, so We got a good plan with everybody those two guys included as we're moving ahead But yeah, they've been they've been really working at center position right now both of them No, I have Yeah Same you know he's been here not even a four-year yet, so Coming in the summer doing what he did coming in through the fall
And then now I mean the same with him. It sounded like a broken record I think the game's slowing down for him Those mistakes that may have showed up or the questions that he had through the fall And as we got going through the season those are starting to erase a little bit Which is good You know his communication level is just talking more that's probably the best thing and he's done so far He's a highly highly talented guy. We're just developing that skills and discipline and and Does go into communication so as he communicates and talks That's probably the biggest thing I've seen from him which I think you know volume and communication equals confidence And so he's playing much more confident right now Obviously has talent. He also had a few plays a game or you know The penalty or whatever. Have you seen him reduce those? A bunch yes Coach, thank you very much. Thanks, sir. Thanks guys. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah By bare fans All right folks, we will come back when Communication I think that's like the big thing I mean, there are no big games but you gotta be able to you know call it out like a pressure might come and stuff like that
So it's the way it is If the start resonating Like folks we have Dalin hate not the 20 Yeah, he wants just a hundred percent effort and just to work hard like obviously like there's more to it But that goes with things that he wants to do much and put back like there's a lot of stuff I pick at every day coming out here It's the best You Definitely but I kind of like when I come here I knew coach fry and then staff like they were gonna they're gonna Definitely like skull me into the player like Yeah, it's called me into that yeah, like they know that like sculpt Yeah, like just kind of make me into that type of player. I mean the development factor from coach fry that I mean getting is like I didn't even just like magic almost
So I mean, I'm just kind of keep keep going with him and keep riding with him Uh, I guess we'll see I'm gonna keep picking at it I guess Yeah, I would say sure, but I mean I can't really take credit for something like that. You know the boy like that is you know the man above kind of put that in my So I Much is running game changing nuance whatever you want to call it with chip Kelly in charge What if you noticed his little bit little little nuances or stuff? I mean maybe like little things I mean Little things add up to big things, right? Yeah, I mean yeah Where do you think you guys were lacking at some point last year in certain some of those matchups? I mean it was a whole new line I mean yeah, I know the side chemistry
But other than that it was I mean those are hard game nothing's gonna be like For sure what's going on? You know you can have some hard times. Yeah Did Missouri test y'all about as well as anybody just about yeah? Yeah, they're pretty pretty well What did you know coming out of there y'all had to get fixed? Uh To be honest, I felt like We just tried to go out there and just play hard like obviously you know number six with a really good player So we just try to make sure if you either back to as much possible. So that's really try to go to Yeah, so as a left tackle like I feel like the number one job is Make sure nobody gets to the quarterback and that's something that I try to do. Make sure you know what they Kind of get around me or go through anything Just keep the quarterback in the other series a lot more yeah I'm a player you know more people in the run and stuff like that That's probably one of the biggest things for that Run block for you Yeah, so I mean we got I mean yeah But maybe I'm gonna throw his twist in and stuff like that so in the run no twist is
So you just kind of like I guess you just got a Really state technically sound That's something I'm trying to do in the know If you're gonna get some Mitchell Mell much this spring instead of what what stands out about him Obviously he came back from a couple in the me injuries and stuff and but what's just jumped out at you back? Yeah, you wouldn't even know he had too many stories. I mean he's so like the way he rushes It's so like it's his signature rush. Yeah, it's something that you can't You it's probably the heart. I'm probably like the hardest person about the block here. Yeah, if I'm being honest like he's very twitchy great with his hands Amazing get off and he has that sneaky power Like if you're not really like setting for it He'll get you And I want to get your take you know you came here from San Diego State Your center the guys transfer to Encephal Maclaufflin Whether he starts or not we'll see right or not. He's from Alabama. He's an amazing you have College football teams are put together anymore. I mean Cuz he could be a key thing and it was that just tell you about the game these days. I mean Yeah, I mean it can go anywhere. I mean like Seth is a great player
I mean he tells me like you know Stuff that they did differently about and stuff like that and I try to take some of like Maybe some advice he has because he's been getting college football for a while. They're the next up Yeah, he seemed like a grown-up then he come across it way then Uh play fast play festival. I mean there's obviously more that we're working on and we're learning like each other To be honest, I guess it's like you know the right side is like kind of like going a little bit I mean not with fire, but like you know we have like some people that compete. I mean we're all competing I know I am and stuff like that. So I just We're just trying to play hard Uh, yeah, I it's very nice there especially when you kind of got a new OC and stuff like that you get it's best to kind of get You know comfortable with the scheme now then maybe like post-acadabra Like in like a few weeks in the after yeah, we go and stuff
Uh, I mean donnie's like I do that. Oh don't know. I like he's an amazing player. He gives me like inside of him Just but it's like Notre Dame. I've never been like more nervous for a game for Notre Dame I mean, I just kind of talked to him. He said we got it. Keep doing what you do and We got to Oh, yeah, especially Thank you The the everything with um, you know people just trying to talk to you saying We're solving tackle commenting on my girlfriend's post of yeah, and it's a lot of great man It's kind of crazy to see but at the same time like understand their passion For us to win. So I get that I didn't think it was So my standard um, I thought I was thinking too much uh and not playing um And I've deleted my social media. So um, I got other people who control my social media now. So I don't I don't
Do any of that any of that so Yeah, yeah Yeah, if you like that to you and did it change any of the Processing this Yeah, no, um, I think the conbow was a little different because Matt moved the center so like it was kind of a new piece to the puzzle I guess you could say um, it was difficult because you're Trying to get comfortable and you get comfortable with car center and then they change it to Matt but I mean the cotton bowl was kind of a learning curve for all of us with Matt being at center The progress you had made over here But did it did it add to kind of a chip on the shoulder or what you guys had to prove still coming into the I think the second one you said the chip on shoulder um Because I mean the defense locked it down that game and we didn't Pretty send anything we went back and watch it and Like this is this isn't good enough as in our standard. So
Oh, yeah immediately I yeah like after this practice how to go immediately watch it um break it down talk to the try Talk to Donnie all those guys to see what they what they're seeing How it could improve on this and stuff like that For me I usually watch myself and then on whole entire office time for me. I didn't like it um Um, I thought it was disgusting for my performance and then for the office wine I thought we just should have cleaned it up a little bit more than what it was Um, yeah, I guess you could say that Yeah, yeah, um, it was just like because you're on your guy and it's like what the hell's going on like what what's what's happening back there Because you don't have the eyes in your back your head. So Uh, take her was just here a minute ago I'm To picture take her you know, there's a big time offensive line. Yeah, yeah, yeah And he said basically the approach to this spring or whatever is nobody cares. Nobody cares
You know What you're going through what your challenges might be etc Yeah, what did you see this different about him? I mean I think his approach is approach to um coming on the field practicing and not just taking another rep just Going and emphasizing that specific rep like okay, I gotta get to my spot and I gotta punch That is what's improved so much about it. I like your hat too. I'm a big golfer. Yeah I know I work just for you Did you go there? Yeah, I'm a I do ball. I'm a ball of tear and use. Oh, that's sick. Are you going out to pinehurst? That's sick. Yeah, number two. I'm a Grandfields guy like four holes just like Yeah, I like going to watch him Memorial too. I'm a big golfer. I love golf. Hey getting back to tech Yeah I think it could be huge um, he steps up um and plays and I Think Tehver could be a big time player. He just got to get um like he said taking that approach to the field and
Being a professional every single day will help him be the person who's gonna he's gonna be Jerry top five foods um oh God am I on a diet like am I in football or is it like I'm 40 years old and Okay, so um I'm gonna go restaurants. I'm not gonna go food. I'm gonna go Number five would probably be waterbigger Number four would be hardies three I don't know I like sitting down um dominoes is number three Number two is McDonald's and number one's in and out. What about barbecue heaven? Oh, yeah, that one was good too. Yeah, I like that one. I don't know. I guess I'm not a big barbecue guy because I have it so much We talked about you know thinking too much on the field and not just playing
How do you get better? Um, I think just comes with more of watching the game breaking it down um in the film room and then on the field when you're playing you're just um Constantly going through it and then like all right just play if this happens I don't care just go and go hard Yeah, yeah There's a lot of things that go through your head. Freeze not but at the end of the guitar. It's you versus him and I'm just like all right This guy's not gonna get there Yeah, he's creative. He's very creative um in everything overall as aspect of offense um I can't get too much into detail about that. Yeah, um, but um coach Kelly brings a new perspective and He's a great person the great human being really really super good coach Thank you
1440 what word got you 45 Yeah, well it was been great He's been good and somebody that's came in Humble and he's ready to work that's been like the only words that I have for him not not a minute just many words But he's here to get up here to work and he's done just that and I'm just we got to have Like A little bit Yeah, I think essentially that's the that's the culture of our room is when we come off the ball violent We're looking as soon as hard as we can we'll clean up the details out and so that's kind of our mindset going into it and uh Like Like how hard is it to kind of change the perception
Yeah, let's say It starts off with like you got to it starts off with tuning out the outside noise And what other people have to say about it and it's really more of a mindset. I kind of look at it as it's like a drop in a bucket You know if I got a big bucket There's no one thing I'm going to do to make this bucket full. It's it's a daily thing where I put one drop it in a day And look back over a year two years three years look back and be like man, I've got a lot better So like I said, I'm just very thankful for the unit The guys that I have around me push me very hard and I'm just thankful Yeah, I'd say Definitely the size component, you know, you can't you gotta be someone that's you know, when the You gotta be big you have the strong you gotta be fast with a lot of jobs that you Um, it's a very asking job. You need to About the big some of the biggest guys in the field But also run routes off some of the smallest guys in the field and so I think just thankful just to be out here and do exactly that What was it like to get that shot the other day from the pros counts
You know just run routes catch balls. Oh, yeah show off. Yeah, no, there's a good opportunity Um, I think some of the big, you know, region behind it. We're just starting giving those guys out there that we're at But maybe a limited numbers so just get out there and give those guys a breather But maybe the opportunity to get to go out there in front of scouts. Um, I think that's a pretty good deal And you're taking the quarterbacks to this point the quarterback battle is going on What's been your take on will for example get to know him Yeah, and of course David I think the mindset that we have body around here is ironing, sharpening iron So that's kind of like it's not just you know, one room. It's from top to bottom. This whole team Um, no matter what position you are, we're here to work I think we're all here to make each other better whether it's in a quarterback room a tight room or running back room Offends for his defense coach for his coach. It doesn't matter. We're all just you know iron and sharpen iron especially this time You're in spring ball. We're not doing too much game planning for next week And which we're really just spending this time to get better and uh build his build a good foundation for ourselves It's time to work on boom forward. If you've seen will will how it fitting in more and more is the practice of going on
You know getting to know everybody and all like I mean I always been spinner for a while Yeah, I think I think I think I think it's times goes no matter where you are you start to adapt and start to get used to the What we have going on here, so it's good to have Thanks What's it been like? Yeah Yeah I'd say um when it comes to that I think it's all the glory to the Lord and I decided to give my life completely to the Lord A little over a year ago and that kind of really changed my outlook on the way that I approach football Um, it's no longer something that I idolize it's just something that I do and I think from the time of my life where I stopped You know compartmentalizing who God was in my life God wasn't there's something that I do on Sundays or something that I do in a Bible study It was something it went from what I do to who I am and so now I embody that as who I am So some of the fruits of the spirit is peace patience and kindness and so those are the kind of things that I've started to embody on this
On this journey. I think it's easy to kind of compartmentalize football away from Uh, faith, but ultimately it's all one. It's all one. So it's giving me a spirit of patience Peace and enjoy with the guys around me. And so I'm just I'm thankful I'm thankful to be here But I just being quite honest. I just I know for a fact I wouldn't be where I'm at right now and I know on the outside looking in you know, I asked like you know Well, where are you right now? But I wouldn't be where I'm at you know right now if it wasn't for my you know relationship with Lord To the came into my life and you know change around for better G. What did you see from Bennett Christian last year? How do you know that suspension? Yeah, I think he did a great job a lot of perseverance I think that's no matter who you are. We're kind of hearing news like that. You're gonna be out for a year. That's hard No matter where you are I'm really proud of him because he you know, he came up and he came to show up every single day He got better. He got better the easy thing to do in that kind of situation. He's a throwing the towel Be like man, you know, you know forget this or I'll get better next year, but
I saw the drive-out and one thing I see not every day. He showed up. He got better And I'm proud of Bennett and I'm proud of this unit I mean yeah I don't know I don't really know how to answer that question because if you go from one unit to another unit The moment you trade units you're no longer in the unit you are initially in so you're now a tight-end so I mean chance of that question I think the time that I went from in the receiving it to the tight-end unit is the moment I became a tight-end No, no, okay, I kept it Wilson the coach Wilson was my coach Um coach I was not coach and I was a receiver. It's just different. I might it's it's two different roles I think I'd say to answer that question The moment that I decided to come to play tight-end is the moment I couldn't tighten and so now over the years I've gotten better at playing the position
but um The moment that I transferred over I've been a tight-end and you know, I'm excited to be a tight-end Another position I'd rather play Little buck us Yeah Leaders and how we want this offense to look like in some of the ideas that we may have as well So it's it's been a really cool transition You talk about the transitions your third offense in three years probably your fourth and six years. Yeah How do you not kind of build up some barriers? Yeah, man. I gotta do this again. Right. Um, I think you know human nature is is always um A factor in whatever you do in life But I think I try to make a conscious choice of coming in with a new year mentality each and every year And I think it's easy because we've had so many changes in um, it's been great working with Marcus and jaden and Jeff and Sam all of everybody like it's it's been great with working with all the quarterbacks and um
I just have a mentality and not really being complacent like I try to really focus on the things that I I can come back better at this year and I've been working my my butt off to do that so Um, I think the easy thing and when I was younger, you're like dang like you just want that consistency, you know, I mean like you want that um Something you could depend on but like life isn't life isn't always like that so um, um, I've been Re-invigorated because of just the energy that dq brings in to our building each and every day and and the coaches as well Like it's fun competing, you know, I mean and sometimes I could get lost in the grind, but um, I think the reason why you make it here at this level is because You you fall in love with the competition of it and I think the competition breathes the success because That is really where you the iron truly sharpens iron. So you know other guys are going to make plays But when you get excited to go in there and and know that The next day we're going to go right back after the defense. So um
For myself, I'm just looking forward to continue to grow with the quarterbacks that we have I mean year six now, which is extreme blessing and um leader one of the leaders in our room and I just try to take the bull by the horns with that and so That's really been my focus and Uh, you know, I'm excited for another year to us. It's looked like you're being more vocal on the sideline Yeah, help young guys exactly something you decided this offseason or uh, I think that's uh been a part of my maturation process as a leader I've always seen myself as somebody that was a uh A leader by example um, but From coaches and other teammates. I've had over the years Um guys like to hear what I have to say for whatever reason sometimes you know and I think the biggest thing where I've tried to Figure out where I fit in with my vocal leadership is I never wanted to be like a dictator You know, I mean, I never wanted to tell guys what to do or or be a yellow or things like that Like when I say something I wanted to have power. I wanted to have meaning and I hope you know The guys would feel the same way if they were to ask them that question
Um, because I want to see all these guys when man like it's it's hard to make it in this league and staying a career And so anywhere I could help the receivers the DB's I'm talking to some alignment Johnny who's who's rehabbing his foot, you know what I mean? Like everybody has a role and everybody has a different story and path And so if I could share what I've been through my testimony to help them or Uh Do things that kind of slow down the process. I'm gonna try to do that because um, we need everybody from the rookies to the ten year vets to make this thing work. So um More so I try to speak to what I what I know and and really those honest conversations that I try to have with guys What they know I'm coming from a good place and I think I'm not the type of guy where I'm just going to talk in at them like if they see something like I could take a coaching point from Luke McAfry I could take a coaching point from Deami from Jahan from Marcus from anybody, you know like I think that's what makes you a great player when you can really
Be coachable from anybody and not take it from a personal standpoint Hi, I'm good. I'm going back to what you were saying about Cliff and Vince. How is he as a teacher in teaching all this? Yeah, I mean, I think he does a really great job of making things simple first and foremost He doesn't overcoach and I think that's the trust that he has in our group and his and his coaches our position coaches to Fill in the details. So we'll have an install meeting and It'll be a good amount of time, but then our position coaches will have time and we'll make it specific to that position and so Then we'll come in and have a walkthrough And then after that we'll have another walkthrough and so I don't think there's been a time where I've come out here And I'm kind of worried about what I got you know, I mean and when you get into certain offices There could be so many details where you could be overwhelmed and I think then it If forces it kind of separates guys in a sense that like one guy may study more than another guy But when you have these these sessions that we have where we're having an installs in the morning
We're having two walkthroughs and then we're coming on the field and doing it like I think you notice a lot of guys are playing a lot faster And more confident because he's keeping it simple But also he's very particular in in what he's expecting, but it's not a lot. So There's not a pressure of to get it right, but at the same time You know is expected of you and and you know you're going to have the tools given to you to be successful out there on the field And this offseason just the totality of change from front office players coaches the turf field What what does that been like for you just to see what's going on? It's been fun um, you know, I think from Mr. Harrison the entire ownership group down to Adam Peters down to DQ down to jayda who we drafted and bringing in Marcus and Jeff and all those guys and Down to leaders we have on our team. I think it was extremely specific on the way they tried to build this thing going into this year First of having the right people bringing in leaders bringing in guys who love to compete first thing that DQ said when he came here was
And his first meeting like if you love to compete this is going to be the place for you. I love it You know, I mean, I love bags and and going at it with the db's every day like the little mundane stuff can seem a little boring But that's I think that was the Were you make the gains during the offseason where you're really focused on I'm hey like I'm a I'm a give all I got for this day And I'm a get better and then I'm a I'm a learn from the film and come back tomorrow and ready to do it again and he also understands like The benefits of having breaks like he's given us breaks. We've had you know weeks off here in there that we can Compose ourselves, but then come back and give it all we got you know what I mean and when you got a coach that Understands the physicality of an entire season where you guys do need breaks by the same time we're going to get after it It makes it fun as a leader because you can take that to your room and be like yo, we got these we got this week You know, I mean that's extremely important, but you know, we have this little break coming up Where you're going to get your your money your body and your soul right so um Coming into this season. I'm really optimistic. Oh what we can be this year and I think it started with the foundation that
Uh the ownership group and the entire staff has built and now it's on myself as a leader to continue to hone that in into the locker room But I think it's great because we have so many great leaders from all across the league who have won and Hey, we got Bobby Wagner in there. You know, I mean I asked a hall of famer so like You know being able to have kind of guys like that that you can lean on that can sometimes take over that leadership Rollward doesn't fall on one person. I think it's uh Extremely refreshing and knowing that everybody's on the same page and the message is the same Allows you to go out there with confidence and know what's expected of you Terry you seem to spend money of your off seasons Learning about things beyond football hobbies. What happy? Did you do anything to this off season so far? It's uh hobbies or increase your knowledge of this the world around you some question um Play a lot of golf As that they just keeps my competitive juices flowing um Planning the wedding that's going well and uh
Man, I've just been grinding like honestly, you know, I mean, I've been hungry this off season like I started working out You know pretty early and You start to see guys like coming back and it's just fun to like to be here and competing and feeling like everybody's on the same page You know what I mean like and so for me I'm a grind every off season, but just This one just feels like it's the start of something you know new and special and the foundation of his extremely important and to be a part of that to have a hand in that um You know, it's it's an honor, you know, and I put a lot of expectation on myself to come out And be the guy that I know I'm capable of and also like take him the next step and uh being somebody that our quarterback that can trust and believe in so um this off season was pretty simple for me um It was just really about you know working and and and and grinding and getting better He talked about jaden before and turning so far. I know we haven't seen everything
But in terms of his his arm strength the throws. He's making anything surprising so far about the types that his ability in that regard definitely uh I think after the second or third crosser that he threw I started telling receivers like hey you gotta get your head around You know what I mean because again each quarterback throws the ball differently and sees the field differently So sometimes on crossers a lot of quarterbacks may like to see you cross the ball and get into that open zone over there If it's man flattened off they like to see you get open where him he has a really good anticipation over the middle of the field where he can make those throws and give you a chance to catch and run and He's really accountable too like we had to play the day where he felt like he missed me and you know It's not a big deal at all, you know I mean him and I could talk to those things and there's been a play that I've talked to him about I could do a better job But but again like that open that open former communication from a rookie I think is it's very rare and I think it speaks to the confidence he knows who he is But he's also not afraid to say when he's wrong and he knows he needs room to improve But his touch on the debaul is amazing
You know, I love getting extra reps with practice after practice with him We're just catching the top end of a deep ball as big for me You know, I mean I get to track the ball over my shoulder and as big for him to be able to Get used to dropping the ball in the bucket But he just naturally has an ability to throw the ball He sees the windows really well and now He's just you know continue to get adjusted to the speed in the past rush I think he's these reps that he's getting our unbelievable during 11 on 11 because he's getting the field Pain and Allen and DA and Cleveland Farrow like we got some dogs up there who are gonna come after them You know what I mean? And we got some great guys up front who are gonna protect them And so these reps I feel like are even better than just seven on seven seven on seven I think he could do in the sleep to be fair like he throws the ball really well But when you get this 11 on 11 two-minute drill you're putting them in game like situations and I'm looking at him in his arm Like we play a real ball now like we we we playing you know, I mean and You just see no no anxiousness in his game in his demeanor which is extremely exciting and and then you know He's extremely light-hearted and he's always smiling so he's joking with lime and D line
He's just cool with everybody and like I said like for a rookie quarterback to come in like that where Guys are gravitating to him and he's not afraid to be who he is Uh, that's dope. I think he has a bright future for himself The tough losses the tough seasons. Mm-hmm. Can weigh on a player. Sure You're entering the prime of your career. J.A. kind of mentioned it last year. All he cares about is winning Yeah, he wants to win now Is there a sense of urgency you obviously always want to win? Yeah knowing that you know You're you're getting to the prime of your career like you want to win now. Yeah, I think that's a fair question I think um, you know, you start to evaluate when you I'm in year six and you know how fast it goes and I try not to put the cart before the horse were looking too far ahead by at the same time You do want to win You want to be a part of a winning culture and have a chance to win the Super Bowl and the playoffs and all those things Like that's why we we do this personally and I'm just excited with being a part of a organization in a environment where now like everybody's on the same page in the
In the message is uniform and it speaks from the top down and It reflects in the guys that they're bringing in, you know All the guys that they brought in are guys who are hungry who are competitors who Not only fighting for spots, but we're going to help us win games and when you're around environment like that like that That makes you excited makes you hopeful and you know You don't know how it's going to turn out until we start playing games, but um the foundation is extremely important And I think this offseason we've really got a great job of building that they have and then when a coach queen guy here building with this team So I feel like we're going to be going into this offseason really Knowing we all got to do individually to become ready for camp, but the met uh the message is clear to come back to camp ready to compete and And be ready to win thanks. Sorry Appreciate you guys Yeah
I think you talked about early in the week of trying to balance out with not getting too high on your motion How does that motivation for you show up on an idea that basics? More preparation more film how to what does that look like for you? Yes, just really an edge and everything you do I feel like and You know carrying that Kind of pissed off mentality. I mean obviously not letting it affect you in a negative way, but you know making it You know reminds you hey like I'm gonna go the extra inch here I'm gonna you know see if I can find something extra on film late at night or I'm gonna you know go over this you know She'd again play is one more time like all these little things that you know, I just You know, we just can't let that what happened last time happened again We're really in this week and it was talking about how you played back here football tend to be playing in the Rose Bowl you grew up in big 10th country What does it mean to take part in this game? What does it mean game mean to you? You kind of grown up. It's a ton man. It's it's crazy that you know that God has blessed me and put me in this position to be here and be the quarterback in the Rose Bowl You know a game that I grew up
watching every single year Some unbelievable games that I've watched in the Rose Bowl some classics um and just to be a part of it is a blessing and I think we're all We're all humbled to be here and we're all understanding of how Unbelievable his opportunity is and we're not taking it lightly because um, you know again, it's a business trip and you know the only thing That we're looking at is you know, we win this game. We go on a plane in the capital. So You know, it's really exciting You know crazy that we're here and that we're a part of this but you know can't let it be too big and just you know Gotta go out there play football I think so I think you know you go back and watch the film and You know, I just didn't you know and I'm We all are here You know, but I just look at it. I'm like man. I don't think anyone This year beat us. I think we beat ourselves every time and you know you watch and you know
We had to turn over you know in our own 20-hour ride and they got the kick You know, it's too business. We're just going first that but then no obviously the way the game ended Another and we're still one point away That's that's what what hurts and it was a you know hostile environment at their place No, I'm just I'm just thankful that you know, I said this This is the other day, but just thankful that we get through You feel like Yeah, what is your sense of the team From that aspect is it feel a little bit different. Yeah You know a game like that you know and still confidence in guys because it shows us But you can't be complacency and it can never be Comfortability and has to be confidence and drive and that's what it has to Urge us to be like man like we can do this Well, we play it our best
We have to be on our game You I just you know at the end of the day, I just want to keep the keep the ball moving down the field You know getting in a rhythm. I think it's going to be big for us And I think we did a really good job of that in Tennessee game Weathering storm a little bit early in the early calls that we got the belt is out in that game And kept this going but regardless we kept the drive going and for me Keeping us on schedule take care of the ball and making sure that We can burn on third down in our situation. We can You know we do all that all that stuff obviously for me and I want to be these guys And drive drive the machine because We got when we're on our stuff. I mean we're our stop so We just got to make sure that we finish our preparation right these at least last two days and go out there and put our best
Thanks You know just recently Talking about how what I want to do for the room is I want to bring that up energy the he brought right so last year Of course, I'm sure he's been doing for years but the year when I spent my own He brought a lot of energy excitement Happiness in the room which is natural energy to where I was supposed to focus on You know, I didn't have to make sure other Guys are you know feels the type of way when it came in here because hunt brought that you know the hunts not here But I saw when you did for the room. I want to be That guy to make sure it's an amptical practice everybody's I'm taking a built-in one period You know until low-day or something But like I want to make it feel like Like you know I want to bring that because that's what me and hunk did with each other. I have each other
I Were lit so I want to do that. I want to bring that energy on make bring more guys You know, I want to do that from day one, you know, I kind of I wanted to do that from day one Talking to him and obviously spend time I spend the off season before until he started Just being in myself just thinking about what the room needs You know because I know I Renewal as one of leaders You know my offense is that we need a guy like that is going to make sure the oh line is picked up We're ready to go every day. I was a hell of a little things don't happen to practice people Saying anything and how I believe maybe different than somebody else maybe You know like a practice at least like a legal positivity You know, I mean so but He the energy yeah, we're beyond just though. I'd be honest like to
So I was kind of how Go on Really my whole life Team captain like specifically and I felt I wasn't a captain in high school Wasn't a captain in college But I'm gonna make a joke on high school. So I feel like I'm not gonna be a captain like you better. I felt But that would be awesome, you know You know that happens. I'd be great, but not either way I want to assume a role as a captain from Respect of the guys until the visual words and get back in that way. Yeah, I mean, I can't say that um I mean, I guess the biggest thing is that I felt like how You used to in the past, but it didn't take just the first LTAs and took Train and left and right once this season because I know what was that Gramps
Just to give back to feeling like myself For they want to TAs And now personally but now like today specifically just changing some small things with my feet I've been talking about along coach Some things I'm doing my feet to get to that to sell that traditional thing that I love to sit on Don't even I thought I felt I thought I felt great already I mean obviously I feel like In the league whether I left the right there's still going against premier guys So obviously the high expectations for the left and right tackle But um, there's definitely like the level of energy And like the expectation definitely taking the human Because now can I apply side that's the as the tackle world you know, so So yeah, I would say in terms of communication as far as just
Even outside of the facility you just stuff like that like really creating that but tackle court back Body them off the field I think has been something that's Even cool I got the text one day You know, yeah, I've been training both I've been training both you know, I asked after the season there like honestly You know, we'll talk you some great season and I just got a text I have this with the free agency Then so I was like you know what I had a whole season right tackle So if I get the word I'm going I'm standing right tackle I did before I build on that bus I was trying to let tackle now As if we're gonna be left tackle And I'd rather do that than train all the right time good to call hey You know what I mean so I'm like let me just prepare an advance You know, I think occasionally on third down there be a lot of twists
Just not like it's automatic And I think that was my mindset for like the first half of the season Like I didn't have to go into game with some pros like oh gosh, they did that I kind of figured like okay This is this is the type of rush man. Yeah, this is how this guy usually rushes If I get the vibe this type of ends like the rush Tackles that first year guys you got the premier patch on Are you know what it was gonna be already know? And honestly just knowing that's kind of an advantage To so you're not you're not you're not oh the problem twists my side Who's never air goblin? I say three plays in a row You know what I mean? I'm watching more everybody else and you really you know it goes out there occasional third down He's gonna take me you know what I mean so That's kind of it's also kind of an agenda. But it's also exciting. I'm gonna get the Hardest you know those are real real reps
I'm really an idling kind of process And I was like had when I told me Let me know about I'm just gonna train it. I was training all left So t.a. I guess if I didn't hear anything about t.a. Is out of came in like So you know what I mean? Cuz just like I'm cool with training both continue. I would have been cool training book continually But I feel like anybody any position will be like okay You want as soon as possible Your hands so then certain how that would have been hard to be able to work both their head to you No They're definitely but in terms of the development It's definitely a lot faster to Stay on all one side, but I think having that the weeks that we had to transition with seasons over Kind of like respond, you know Look
Things at a time right now when it comes back I'm gonna show them to you on the house. I just got a house not too far from So I told my got that house like I could yell outside DJ My mom said no just go out there my dad just dominate the person I'm suffering me No, just do what I've been doing for the last Two to three weeks I should say um, but you know they play man on man. So I'm just ready for the challenge I Yeah, I mean Feels good. Just say somebody going out there and play man on man. I'm gonna guess Ohio State receivers It's something to crazy, but you know, we just ready for the challenge They said it not changing their gameplay, but we gotta go out there and show them the reason why not to play man I
Mean I don't My my if I be on a curve I'd be on a curve with me. It's not really a big deal to me May definitely be a blessing for sure just to be on a cover of a game, but no, it's not really Dream of my it's a dream of mine, but I don't really think too much of it You Mean no, not yet. Probably hit me after this easy. Um, no, just no planning Carlos football players as a freshman planning the Rose Bowl as a freshman Planning a card and bow and not an actual championship. I mean it's a blessing for sure But I haven't hit me yet I My favorite catch I would say We play Michigan State on the one I call over to defenders definitely probably my favorite for sure or you go
The one from Iowa, I should say and as a part of them too I Don't I mean yeah, like you said it's pretty frustrating me having again that I had in the Rose Bowl And they're coming to the Carlin Bull and or just them Doing different things chasing their scheme up for against me But I mean like you said whatever I could do to make the I mean help the team win It's not really a big deal for me along as we win. That's all I really care about and it got us to the national championship Right here
Uh, it means a lot uh, we put a lot of work in this uh this season uh, we have Hards we have loads. We have people kind of us out um, but we hear now. We just read and put on a show Monday Oh Oh, yeah Yeah Uh, first of when there's a national championship because there were means a lot Um, you see everything that he bent through this year people uh, saying should be fired and this dying a third, but Uh, when you see everything that he bent through this year, I mean, I seen everything I had been through this year on See everything people saying my hem on Twitter. Um, I wasn't here Uh, he pressed out the head coach and job, but I know this year for sure. We definitely got to win this for him Oh, I mean it's a lot uh, a lot of people in the lead. I should say I can't really say
Who but I mean you had guys like oh, they're you had guys like uh Oh, they're you got step by the eggs. It means a lot of uh, my good time is Chris Carter just a lot of no guys I played in that field and stuff like that, but yeah, really them guys for sure Uh, no, just keep going um, you got it you've messed up for sure. Uh, really. Yeah, really that Oh, like a physical defense uh, like like you said, like people say like they like to play man. They're not changing their scheme So we're just ready for the challenge. Uh, like you said probably the best defense we probably go see all year And we just gotta be ready to go out there Monday and just put on the show
Oh I'm excited for will uh Him uh first coming here in Ohio State January our first workout we had together uh, me just everything that we bit through this season um I mean, I'm just happy for him to be in this position right now, but we got to finish the job and that's the uh winning at the omundae Oh, I mean, it's pretty funny um Them saying that because I'm I'm just only a freshman, but um, it's a blessed for sure people to even say that but I got two three more years left for college and I'm just focused on college right now. I'm not really worried about the NFL right now All right Oh, it's very special for me uh, just being a freshman and playing the national stage like up here for national titles
Something that I dreamed of as a very young kid. Um, I'm just happy to be here and I just can't wait to put on some Monday for you guys Yeah You Uh, mean all of us used we just sit on the bitch and we just see him hit the quarterback the ball come out and we all just got up and just started no jumping up and down We all decided uh happy for jacking that moment and we just knew that that mom would like. Yeah, this we're going to the ad for sure Yeah You Me it shows a lot um me you know going from high school or when a three-state championship Shamanama Donna then you know coming to Ohio State uh just appear for national charter right now
Me just so that I've picked two great schools um, but I'm happy to be here and I just can't wait to put on a show Monday You The coolest person um, I mean you got a lot. I can't really say just a specific person. You got a lot of great guys Recharge and a lead like um, Odell you had guys like Stefan digs Um a lot of other places were just kidding my mom, but really really them two guys will show Odell a step on this Yeah I mean like they say they play man, so I mean I'm just ready for the challenge and just get ready to go out there Monday and just no put on the show Okay, thank you
Uh the vice-geno high gave me um, I'll just keep going first um You uh, he I know the reason why I'm here and Me yeah, like he said just keep golfers and just no keep the maintenance and the main thing and the best corner I faced this year um I mean I faced a lot of great corners. Uh, I can't really say but yeah, I faced a great The body of the corner is here really put a name on it My dream vacation is uh, turns and cake goes What are you?
Uh, I say both respect and frustration as well But I mean I thought they come out there and trip it to me and they say stick it to whatever doing our year and that's playing man covers We just ready for the challenge Uh, pretty good group Christian Gary 29 is a great corner 15 uh, the Narmor two great guys are right there Very physical, but you know we all highest never see us so we ready for the challenge Oh I say just no Understanding the defense understanding the defense uh understanding the game plan understand what coach Kelly is trying to get done
Um, I mean just coming in I felt I progress from our first game gets accrued to now Feel like I better each and every week. Um me being slowed down a lot for me Um, but yeah, really just no understanding diva says and no understand what they're trying to do to me for sure I I'm two guys great part of the best we go see all year for sure um two fit two physical guys um But you know, we're ready we're ready for the challenge that they're coming with and that's the play man on man and You know, we ready to go on Monday Oh, I mean the environment is pretty crazy. Uh, seeing all these cameras Uh Something I never thought I'd see it there my life, but uh, it's a blessing for sure this the main exposition right now
Oh, I mean, we just had a prayer lay prayer lay meeting and you know, we all they all just me We all discussed the issues because they discuss issues and you know, which is one the word Me not two and a half weeks we had off before Tennessee game and we just played came out there Um Tennessee game and we played with a chip on a chip on our shoulder Um, all throughout the playoffs and we go continue to play with that chip on our shoulder in a national championship on Monday Uh, do you know how that very um, powerful Uh, yeah, the very impact on my career I should say uh, you know, just going to his games as a Um, very young kid seven eight years old Um him playing Westman, he's playing for West Virginia and they played Clemson orange boat down in Miami Um, he just going to they're seeing his games. It's like yeah, I definitely want to play on his stage and I can't uh wait till I get to know that moment for sure You are you
You Because they really just in his own his own love space. Uh, he's just walking around trying to get his mom right trying to get his mom ready for the game Uh, but you know, he he just gave everybody hype in the locker room and you know, just trying to get us ready to go to win the game Yeah Oh, yeah, oh, yeah for sure me You uh Go play mangas Ohio State receivers. I mean, just be ready uh, cuz you know, we definitely go come out there and know Uh, give our best and I mean, they said not to change what they do so we're just ready for the challenge Uh, not a year later uh, definitely sometime my career college Uh, but not my first in college. I should say um, just the better the being is position right now
It's you know, a blessing or just a yellow key for Miami to be here And I won't take it for granted. I'm ready to go out there Monday and give him my dog Yeah Yeah Yeah, uh, I mean, I was watching that game against was it Georgia? I believe yeah, I was in a game I was pretty sick myself cuz I was actually committed at that time um So I mean, yeah, they left it back testing them off But I mean we ready to go out there Monday to redeem myself and you know, just put put a show Monday Okay
Oh, I mean I just laugh um But you know, that's what they do. They're not gonna change what they do uh, just because we're a higher state So when you gotta go out there and put it on put it on why not to play uh, man, no, man, it gets us So we just got go out there and show them Monday You said again, I'm sorry Uh My journey here at Ohio State repair me a lot from that your shape of shit me just going through everything that I've been through Uh, my first guy here all the uh, Matt jurles all the hard workouts that we had all the hard practices Um, just preparing all of this for this moment, and no, I'm just ready to go out there and give it up my all on Monday Okay, okay We just squeezed this
200 me is big and strong I What's 20? Yeah, that's great. Yeah, pretty good You Why not part of like the most is the one against Michigan State when I caught over two defenders on their song line
Putted that one or the one after that I should say or you go the one against Iowa probably them three probably my best ones for sure Oh I mean just will put in the ball in my area, and I just know how to make a play for Um, even though somebody was gathering my face, I just know I still had to make a play because the ball touched my hand So mean just in the ball and the other thing I have to make the play no matter how the ball comes at me I Have to a big game um, I mean we really they really feed us chick-fil-a or piece out of the game So it's really either chick-fil-a or or piece, so yeah, probably chick-fil-a for sure
Yeah Uh, it went it went pretty good everybody just uh Speaking with their thing is uh going right and what they think is wrong Um, which is a lot of the older guys if what's in their opinions on what we need to do the uh come to get as a team Um, but you know that meeting definitely uh help doesn't have in a big way because it helped us on the field as well Because we played a great football right now and we just got to you that one Monday Yeah, it definitely got emotional uh, can't really say uh, what really was said because that's not prayer prayers only and coaches only but it was definitely some stuff said that um people took uh People took and uh went with it and that's the reason we planned the way we planned right now You know Make help me a lot this year on him being our older guy in the room
Um me help me and Carl Nell as well and Brendan is in all the guys in our city room as well Me just a great guy as well. It's very smart uh I mean make just been a big part of the reason that I'm having to see that I'm having a look because he's been a big you know Older guy been there been a lot of great guys in that room like Chris a lot of way girl Wilson Marvin Harrison Jr Jackson's making jibba so he's seeing all the grids that I built through there and me teaching us the right thing and the right way And in the buck out way for sure I love it that that means they don't know what's coming out of next we got 12 personnel We got 11 personnel you can throw two of us in and throw one of us and you gotta stop it all What have you made of the quarterbacks of three of them? Uh, not too much. I feel like they all come in here working. I feel like everybody's making their throws making their paths and everybody making their directions Would it you take away When the next game that was it when the next game go out there outside of the beaten man in front of you
Came out with a message and check their shirt on the bench Spring calls about Looking on everything I'm trying to get my game as well I was placed around I feel like we've had leaders from last year that came back. I feel like we got new guys that stepped up into their roles and their worlds and around the team That becoming leaders Being a leader you all always have to be vocal. You can have say examples on the field or you can be vocal both Uh, what was it like to I was happy for Gio. I see him. I heard grind and I see him last year grinding Getting an extra work. There's ball is ball. We come out here and play ball He's out here doing a pro day yesterday. I just you know ready to go make some real money
In what ways do you feel like you're a different player now going into this year and maybe you were last year? I feel like every year I've just improved on my overall game Blocking kitchen to system wise People used that learn but I feel like I'm just overall better. I came in here ready to go How much does it push you when you're in a room with guys like Max and Will and That you know you've got to be on your game if you're going to get a feel man I feel like Arya sharp by Arya every day come in and work and they go push me every day to work and it's just like I'm a doodle Like an actor's before but he's now a crowded group Love more honestly Max Max Claire Max LeBlanc both of them. I love it What's You flashed I feel like every year with my year but hey you gonna see this year I'm ready to come out here and put on a show for the Bucket Nation I feel like everybody on the field ready to go put on a show we're trying to go back and back
You got a blame quite a bit though last year, John What did you pick up from all of that especially on in a championship run, you know, and they were counting on you Honestly, just be ready at any time honestly You can be throwing at any time just like I was I probably had some rest while just throwing in You gotta get it done. Yeah, if you don't get it done, they're gonna find somebody else to do No, I think we asked you this year to tell me Definitely see what you've pressed as a tight end, you know, the all of that needs I just The over the spring and some of this I'll see you then I feel like I've told them I body a lot and I got stronger in the way room I've also got a little bit faster so I get in and out of breaks a little bit And just the mind part of the game The middle part of the game if you got even better in the anime, how would you describe that? Say it again the mind part of the game, you know It well, I feel like it's a lot more fair. We I say like the tight ends we come in here Five o'clock every other day do walk through more film
Which is more students at the game now? Like that I feel like it was just a exciting play I was the last read on it like the very last read on it. I don't go out I can't die with the cats. I need to get the first down You know But I still had a great rookie year Six yards of carry, you know, things like that. I think it was like nine touchdowns 10 including the playoffs and so There's always been like all right God bless me show my talent trying a little bit like even when I had the knee so I had the knee right a lot of people Don't know like I didn't get hurt again whenever I got you know got cleaned up So I went down in 21 right had the injuries the knee injury and then Came back later the next year and I and I played the first few games and I just feel there was a lot of scar tissue in there So I had to get it cleaned up. I didn't get hurt again. I could have played the whole year, but
I got it cleaned up so I can feel like me and So after I got that cleaned up by the first two games back from the injury. I had over 120 yards rushing Right and then went on had great great ending of the year, you know 100 total yards in the play-all game we lost which I hate the most Stas don't matter me. I want to win But then come back the next year hurt again Like 20 kill each so two really unfortunate injuries, but That's just a guy's plan, you know, and I think that the storm is now over You know, and I do think that I'll be able to shine a light to the whole world Are you concerned that you have that label of guy who can't stand and feel? I could care less because I do I do and I know this out there um Because as as it should be it should be I got hurt two major injuries back or not back to back years, but you know So I haven't been on the field as much as I should that's true. That is true, but It's not like I'm having these little little dinky injuries and sitting out
It's something I can't control literally. So that's why I'm not bothered by it like yeah I am injury poem you can say that you know, but I do think that The chargers are getting a guy that's gonna be healthy from now on, you know God will it and it's gonna be great and I do think that it's gonna be it's gonna be a great However many years here When you've been on the field you've been highly productive Yeah, 5.8 years of very average for your career like knowing that when you're out there You're very productive. How much confidence does that give you that really all you need is not All the confidence in the world, you know the way I work I want to say just from the numbers But just the way I work my work ethic, you know, and I'm my relationship with Jesus Is like I have the most confidence when I step out there because I do know like If he grants me the health is over with is I don't think I'll be you know, I think it'll be a great year or whatever Couple of years however many years he grants me great health, you know, and I think
Just the work ethic my prayer and all that stuff That's what help you have that confidence with the numbers will be there and they they might be higher after this year You know, Zen and it's crazy to think about because I had six point yards or six yards per carry, you know, so we'll see Oh Yeah, yeah, yeah, I play with Bradley I play with him, you know, I know the Slater I know all the I know all the guys, you know, and I'm I'm excited. I think it's like I said earlier. It's a talented group You know, we just got put together win some games because that's what I came before I wouldn't I wouldn't say a part of the recruitment but like whenever I decide I was going to sign it was great to have him in the room Yeah, we're great. We're we have a great relationship. That's he's like my brother I think it accomplished it complimented each other very well You know, um he can do a lot of stuff too. You know, we got a lot of people think he's just power power power
But I think he has some other parts of the game too, which it it'll be great because I feel like I could do everything and when one gets tired we can roll it in we keep rolling win some games Look the world will be I know that's a hard question. Um, how do I think I think it'll look beautiful You know, I'm a lot of people call this a passive league, but I think you got to run the ball to win a super bowl You know if you look at the the team to win the super bowl they can run the ball they can control the clock And so if we're both good it'll look great beautiful I Would I would describe it as you know a great offense Um, I think he he gives a quarter he's gonna give the quarterback Lot of options. He's gonna give the running back a lot of options He's gonna give the receiver a lot of options. You know, and I think it'll be I think it's gonna be great
She's often going to be amazing And you said that one part of it is just you gotta call the place you gotta call run place as a running back You know how much confidence how much you say it is to give you you know you play call That's gonna stick with it and allow you Any options on it gives you a rhythm of the game gives me a lot of excitement You know is he gonna be like I say it's fun to play his offense You know, um, and I think he does have some good things in the past game too, but like you said he sticks with the run And that's that's the identity you you want to offensive has an identity right you don't want to be looking Everywhere else to find your your identity you want you want to have it And so I think his offense has that and the guy see bills and puts in there It it compliments that I didn't see so I think it's gonna be great Well, I ain't gonna answer any of the four if it's up to me. Yes
Yeah, look because I had this problem like three two years three years ago. I'm thinking I'm full go I think I'm ready to go anything next year. You know, I'm on PUP like Hey, look some stuff above my prairie pay Gray so But I don't know. Hopefully I can start. I think I'm ready to start you know I'm beginning training camp, but that's not up to me as I've learned I Wouldn't say that I think I've been I've been in some great organizations and I think this This organization is a great organization and the training staff is great And so they just want what's best for me, you know And they're they're taking care of me which that's what you want in the organization And so that's where that comes from which I appreciate it like I really appreciate that You know because I'm a type of guy like I work really hard. So Maybe sometime I'm blind to you know the danger of something, you know So I appreciate it, but like I said if it's up to me. Yeah, I'm out there, but never know
Well any administration for you during the getting into the agency, you know dealing with rehab and not you know having a full season of paid for the production to go out there was there any part of that where you're like You know The different situation Yeah, I like it. I like How do I say this um I Like it the hard way But not you know, I like it the hard way I like it um I like trial and tribulations So um, I mean the dice that I was given the role was I was coming off a third Achilles And um that was that was the lorge plan. So It was beauty in that like I was comfortable I was caught like there was multiple teams, you know I wasn't it wasn't like I didn't have any other team But I was comfortable and sitting back and just enjoying the process
Letting myself get fully healed So whenever that team whoever I would sign with who now is the Chargers is gonna get the best me, you know and I think people all around the league know that like okay this guy. Okay. It's a high risk High reward type thing right not even a high risk of low risk because you It's a business right so I got hurt last year. So not as much money and he's be throwing that But I think everyone around the league knows that whenever I am on the field the numbers don't lie And so they know that and a lot of teams were like are here you can we give you this but We want you to be healthy. So When I'm healthy, it's gonna be great. This is the chance that I've been giving here I'm so grateful and I know that's gonna be they won't be they won't regret it Are you the type of person that likes to do people wrong? Like you've run a couple things like the High risk high reward, injury from you know like are you the type of person that really tries to The people wrong? No
I Hear it. I see it. It's pretty cool. Like you'll never see me unless I'm just like in a bag Moved you never see me like oh like if I have a great game or great year like I have this wonderful year I ain't gonna go back and you like yeah, like yeah, what happened? No because I don't care like You're eventually see like I'm like I'm a guy that's really good. So I ain't worry about that But I'm proving myself right that I am one of the best in the league right so Forget all the naysayers And people to talk about who'd be an injury prone because whenever I have this great year. It's gonna be forgotten You know Well, I give that energy Yeah, I was you know, we just with him, you know, he's is a great guy. I mean he was in my class I remember seeing him on we were at an award show I was a dog walker or finalist and I'm like I've seen him play, but I didn't know he was that tall
Like I didn't know he was like six. I went at first. So I'm this was years ago in college I'm like, and this is pretty tall like It's cool though like I like I never really got to I don't like that. It would be kind of you know No nerdy their ways kids cool dude very late, but No, thanks to him So it's just cuz like The last three years has been disappointed at the end of the season So I feel like we put more work in I think like that's what we're missing. We're just putting more work in and you just got to Do that throughout the summer the spring the fall and then just got a show on the field Tell the guy to text you Just like in a moment there practice and you look at it through all of the deep bits I mean you look at the person L-chains Coming in with sunday going up in the Postural line spring with all the guys What's your like How It's kind of just like
High-bar has so much, but I kind of look like a like a legendary defense kind of I feel like we got playmakers everywhere And then moving sunny down. I think that's a great move for him. You know, he's a big athletic dude He can play in a box. He can play like safety thing that's just showing how like versatile he is and Caleb You know you you seen Caleb how he plays. He's an animal. He's only a sophomore I think And I feel like the guys we brought back you know, we all can we're all dominant So for like as a collective unit we're going to be like unstoppable. So confident is a problem No Well, there's a part of that too and as they mention it they're about pacing yourself If you get there's that much self-believe thing there's also that part of going to build depth You know case you have interest case you have issues. So how do you look at spring in terms of getting guys that are next in line As prepared to keep that standard hot I think you just got to set a great example for the young guys and just showing them how to How to practice how to like watch film how to take care of their body because those are the things you're going to need to like Go on this deep run and think it's like 17 games or something that we're not we add in games
So the young guys are going to have to play we can't just play fit the games the snap. That's not going to happen So You Is gonna keep working kind of keep running getting in shape Almost kind of surprised me that you said that it was joke. I'm sure but like you know It's surprising to hear that That kind of take a toll on you last year I think that you need to you know push it even further getting better shapes so you can play all 16 17 games Yeah, definitely I gotta get way better shapes than I've been and I feel like It was kind of like it was a joke Yeah, of course, I needed those snaps because the years before I wasn't really playing as much So I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt So I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been
You know Uh, well as a workhorse he he gonna stay quiet you gonna work hard and that's all I love about you Focuses he don't really talk much. He's going to get a job done do a job right rarely has any mistakes So what would be a successful season? A national championship Ring When all the games we don't want to lose anything We got a mindset that we can't be beat and we just gotta go show it Seems like you guys expect a national championship every year this year even more so you guys have all come back for this All decided like It's definitely a difference everyone working harder. Um, we noticed our last run Like we most of us don't have any years after this so we gotta go go bigger going home and we're not trying to go home Finish big we know what you guys think of Michigan but When you look at what they did they won the national championship and you guys
Took them down to the final minute, right? You know what I mean? I mean you You were right there something goes a little different you guys could have been one that game against them Does that tell you anything about like that? Hey you guys want to win a national championship, but You played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year like you're that close So I'm saying uh, we just like work harder. That's that's kind of coach makes of saying you know nobody cares Just work harder like those no one played Georgia is the same thing. Yeah last last play. You know they went on the win in that So We just gotta get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that you're that close The last two national title Uh, of course is you know it's frustrating, but you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it You just gotta you know come back and work harder do things Better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change as that as you get older you kind of learned I thought I was working hard to then you always find out there's a little more Yeah, definitely. I mean that's how that's what growing up is basically in college
I thought fresh me here. I was working as hard as I could but not look back at it I really wasn't working hard at all Compared to what I'm doing now, so just to learn anything Uh 80 85 I mean I can it's all on me. I just I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just gotta run harder In shape I think I think we I definitely can last I was just you know we got to get the young guys to come along with us We can't play for the snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies Just Everybody like online D line. We got to get those younger guys to play you know get that pieces on the D line and
Everywhere else so we can last Ah, yeah, I did unless we were like winning by like a lot I thought like there knows mom is you know I can go sit down or something But we're playing them big games like you know Notre-Dance you know for those kind of games. I of course I want to be because I know I can contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I get the job Oh, yeah, definitely came back as a Came back to animal y'all you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice he shows all the time. He's just He's just he's growing right now. He has a work. I think he just has to get you know in the playbook and things like that You guys are about the exact same size List of your boat listen to six three you're three twenty seven. He's three twenty six. Yeah I kind of look at him like my my junior, but you know, came in he's gonna be a great player He's got to develop more and getting to play So really a lot on you older guys there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back
Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys? Yeah, definitely we got to be leaders um like I say we got to have them play this year We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work and we got to get them right Third and all season so they can play and not just play they want to like contribute like make plays tackles sex Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes And they all work hard. I'm really seeing much it's only day two Throughout the workouts they've been working hard, you know, they they're determined And it looks like they're ready to work How important this notes feels like There's a lot of great defense You have big athletic defensive tackles who can eat up space I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last
Couple of national championship winners Team on North, they got two good Detackle two athletic detackles look at Georgia two athletic detackles I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams What's Georgia Jordan Davis and Janet Carter? Let's miss you again. It's Chris Jenkins You understand How important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to I think so I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakish detackles Yeah, like in the combine just now you see in like those guys they're moving We're in the four seven eights and things like that so We'll see and when you think it when you think about the freakish Defend tackle. How do you think you fit into that Old of that kind of player you watch that and say yeah, that's me Uh, yeah, definitely. I think I'm top-notch when it comes to detackles I don't want to you know get a big head, but you know watch it come on. I watch it do the drills. I mean
I have to see like you're looking my film. So I think I'm up there I mean you're going I Mean as many as I can have I think I have more than that But I think they're counseling I think they're counseling of them and It's some of them where I like just missed it. So but I think we work on drones matching the hand I think that's uh goes big and uh What we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarterback is Anyway, you can it's just great for the defense, you know, just that little thing covering his eye, you know He might throw it a little bit to the left to our player So let's something that you really really have to work on That's one of the things that you maybe worked on
I think I just have like a like a eye for the ball kind of I kind of just look at the quarterback and just I see him I load up. I just try to get in his ways and sometimes he just throws it to me I don't know I mean they get frustrated by you know we're a team. You know, we're just good Take time to grow, you know, you don't have to have the The pig mentality of problem of of instant gratification, you know, you can develop and grow So and sometimes you may be And behind a guy that's a really good player is nothing wrong with developing and growing and playing when you're time is right And if the time is right right now is a freshman like what's your main did you play early? You know So we try to also sell that you know, we care about him as people and try to prepare you for life after football So it's bigger than just football country prepare you for life Whether it's the NFL or on with a regular career in the workforce We want you to prepare you as a young man and we try to sell that and preach that to the parents
With remain having that in fact you mentioned Rolling all these different spots do you anticipate you know, there wasn't a lot of rotation among the cornerbacks last year What everyone was healthy do you anticipate maybe growing him through the rest guys here with the longer season potentially? Yeah, we play it by ear, you know, I mean we see how goals by time we get in the camp But you know obviously he he's earning his stripes. So, you know, I mean you earn your stripes, you know A lot of job to create opportunities for you, you know I mean we have to see how it goes with all the other stuff, you know once we get closer to the season My and we're getting the game plan stuff, but he's doing a great job and he's and he's taking a great step forward No, it's been there for a while. I've been doing that for a long time. It's all about relationship If you develop real relationship and you're authentic in your communication and you have honest feedback and you have you know direct teaching
The guys that have value and character and they appreciate that stuff. They're embrace that So but they have to know you care and you have to know that it's real and they have to know that you you're really concerned about There where being as a young man and when you get close to him It's been a lot of time with him off the field you could coach him hard And you can you can you can say truthful things to him and then they embrace it and you have real conversation Because you know the only goal is to help him get better as a young man Yeah, it's them balanced up a little bit now that goes with great competition We have the we go against the best receivers in college football So that helps escalate your growth process Because if you don't figure it out real fast you're getting embarrassed So that competition but what happened with that I guys start competing I guys start growing I guys got better And now is even up a little bit so where you get really good work at practice today
You know, I mean so it's competitive is fun those guys both on both sides of all care about each other So it's great competition and they all real close so you know, I mean it's that stuff that gets us better That will prepare for Saturday I know it's just it's gonna competitive man They got the best group in the country that you're going to get every day So you have to bring it every day, you know, I mean so they they we got a great quarterback room We got a great receiver room a running backs are really good So when you out there going against them is deep so you have to be ready for it And obviously man, we see a lot of good stuff with with with with stay in coach Kelly doing over there And so it prepares you a lot And it helps us grow Kind of an associative
Yeah, oh that's because you know, that's where you get better our shop is our so you know you get to see that every day at practice That helps you grow it's no better Uh Thing to go against every day than to see that on a daily basis Also We just moving a lot of guys around we watch our practice. We have a lot of guys in there right now You know, we pop up through a four different guys in there obviously the ring's holes in their germinas in their Caleb Myles we have we have about four or five guys moving around right now We just try things out in spring ball see what a fit, you know, see what things work together So it's gonna probably some more guys in there, you know, we move it around to try to just get the right fit throughout the N and see how it goes By the time we get really start the season He can run any strong. Yeah, I mean he's fast Very serious about his business He's big it's 200 pounds. He can run. He's strong. He's conscientious Now, man, he's starting to grow and he's starting to get get better with it You know, I mean, so we look for big things for him in spring Keep competing, you know, I mean now he's made the uh the transition
Competing the day, you know, I mean start going in that transition is all just like I'm in germana last year You throw him in the fire you let him go you compete you go by time we get out of end of training camp It'll be them figured out. Yeah, I want that but now you just throw it all at him compete Continuing to grow continue to learn he has the skill set he has to let now you just got to put it all together And it takes time to do that um and hopefully you see that by time we get in the training camp Yeah, by time you start getting about two weeks from now that last week, you know Because it takes time because there's a lot of stuff going on But you know by time you get into that last week of spring ball You you look to start seeing the things that you look for show up and then you know you get another Evaluation again when we get into training camp see if this stuff carried on to make sure we go it for starting in September So what's your assessment of The growth that he's made now that he's kind of got a skew under one defense or do you like about him in that?
He's very conscientious. He's smart. He can run. He's tough Um, he's made the adjustment because he's out of Europe on his belt So now you can see he's not making a lot of mistakes. He competes. He's real conscientious and uh, and uh, and he has a physical presence So the growth has been really good and we look to continue that throughout spring Like No, the the culture here is real. Uh, coach day does a great job of building the culture Um, our room is close knit the guys on defense are real close those guys want to come back. They have an agenda You know, we want to come back. They want to come back and and and and and and and walk away with something So um, it didn't shock me Uh, but but it's a good environment for them too. You know, I mean that's when you see those guys come back That's a testimony to the the culture that's set here their brotherhood the environment And I coach day he runs the program for those do's to want to come back because we go at it. It's hard. It's not easy
It's not easy, but what what we do. So in fact, they come back and do that as a testament to how he runs the program As far as uh, intensity how would you evaluate? I think a dinged early on. How would you evaluate your games tonight? Yeah, my goal is just to come out um, play as hard as I could um It was a little weird last week for the first time in my career playing a game that doesn't necessarily mean anything in terms of playoff contention and I kind of had to check myself and and this week come in with a mindset of every game matters and um, and we need to put the best product out there that we can and um, and that's what I try to do uh Yes, Sam just tried to get it on it and uh Cop me it was more of like a stinger type thing and it but the ref wanted me to go to the tent
So I had to go answer some questions Um, how do you come to your helmet? It was like jammed, yeah, my neck You're like your helmet, I know that you've got a sort of a different helmet Help you yeah, maybe When it hits the top like that, it's not as good, but I think these guys 11 months ago kind of crushed their dreams. Do you get the sense they're a kind of a different team or And also that they This was a very important game for them to win I don't think they're that different. I think they've had a ton of injuries on defense which hurts them But the mentality of the head coach you could see it throughout everybody um, it's really a cool team uh, I could Just see from afar that it's probably a fun team to play for um, and They've they come out and they play to win every game and I respect that Put so much emphasis on the ball all meetings and takeaways and I think you got two since the by-week
Is there any accounting for that? I mean is there so many different things that go into a turnover or takeaway? Rack your brand around It goes into every level the defense um When you have your opportunity. I know we had two against uh Stafford That could have made I mean if maybe if we get those it Sparks a bunch of other ones so You just have to make your um make your plays when they're there and then um Just being being the right spots and I don't think we've done a great job of that this year It's good. He's a really good player and um Um Yeah, I wanted to see where I'm at against him Have you ever seen anything like the james and Williams touched out where It's pop back to him and you see something like that or I was in the tent So I had no idea that happened
It was a play in this game when we saw a kind of a misdirection sprinted all the way across the field to make the play Um, did you see the play and I think it was was that the one gives cut back Yeah, I had like a ten yard Cushion and he ran by me like I was didn't exist um and I tried to sprint and I just just like I Don't have this and thankfully Mustafa is a heat seeking missile and um And he made the play so What was your mindset against Miami? I mean I didn't have the Katie it took us I mean, I think we came in with the right mindset as a team just myself. It felt a little like dead energy wise um but Yeah, it was a learning Moment for me to learn and and um make sure that I come in with the right mindset every single week
It's like there's there's a lot of plays where you guys get to the finals past breakups And it'll be like a couple plays in a row and then there's an excellent sub allowed What can you believe in around about the existence? Yeah, I mean we did we did get them to the second third lungs um and then yeah, they they would make a big play and You definitely want to Capitalize when you when you back them up like that we didn't do that tonight and that's why they scored 40 points I'm sure yeah You Oh, oh yeah for sure you had guys like Chris Carter guys like Michael Thomas really them two guys for sure um me uh, Mike Michael Thomas was talking to me before the game
Um, or the Rose Bowl a Chris Carter in after the game as well me just them giving me advice Just you know telling me keep going first and you know just keep doing what I've been doing the whole year Um, I mean them got bugger legends, so definitely look at them guys for sure make sure to spare It means a lot uh me just a kid from Miami Uh, just be able to play an actual championship as a freshman uh, something that I dreamed up as a kid and I'm here now and there's K-rated cake can't wait to put on the show Monday You He said he did not come Oh, I mean the kisses know like he says made crazy each and every week uh playing um, but you know Can't can't let it get to my head. I should say um, let me just football at the end of the day, but you know, just you know, have to be in this position
Okay Oh none of us think we could be covered man oh, man um, I mean we'll actually talk about this yesterday as well But you know, I mean that's what they do. That's what they do. I mean we just got god there. You know Play our game and no shorter reason why not to play man oh man You Two Four Three One I go five
You Um, I'm not saying no just go out there Monday. I just dominated the person I'm supporting me uh, you know, just do what I've been doing for the last Uh, two to three weeks I should say um, but you know, they play man oh man, so I'm just ready for the challenge Yeah, uh, I mean Feels good. Just say somebody going out there and playing man on man gets Ohio State receivers is something crazy But you know, we just ready for the challenge. Uh, they say they're not changing their gameplay, but we gotta go out there and show them the reason why not to play man on man Oh, I mean I don't really my if I be on the curve, I'd be on the curve I mean it's not really a big deal to me um, may it definitely be a blessing for sure just to be on the cover of a game
But you know, it's not really a dream of mine. It's a dream of mine, but I don't really think too much of it Uh, man no, not yet. Uh, probably hit me after this easy. Um, no, just no planning uh, call us football players as a freshman uh, planning the roles both as a freshman um, planning a carton boat not in the national championship I mean it's a blessing for sure, um, but they haven't hit me yet My favorite catch I would say We played Michigan State um, the one I called the two defenders definitely probably my favorite for sure or you could go The one from Iowa I should say and then so put it into
Uh, I don't I mean yeah, like you said, it's pretty first grade of me having a game that I have The roles in the Rose Bowl and they're coming to the carton boat. No, just them uh, doing different things changing their scheme up for uh, it gives me Um, but I mean like you said whatever I could do to make the I mean help the team win Uh, it's not really a big deal for me. As long as we win, that's all I really care about and it got us to national championship Uh, it means a lot uh, we put a lot of work in this uh, this is it uh, we have highs we have lows, we have people kind of out Um, but we hear now we just ready to put on a show Monday Oh yeah
Yeah Uh, first of all, this is a national championship because there was means a lot um, you see everything that he bent through this year people Uh, saying should be fired and this died on third, but uh, you see everything that he's been through this year I mean, I seen everything I had been through this year on see everything people saying my him on Twitter um, I wasn't here Uh, he first got the head coach and job, but I know this year for sure. We definitely got to win this for him Uh, I mean, it's a lot uh, a lot of people in the league, I should say I can't really say who but I mean you had guys like oh, they're you had guys like uh Oh, they're you got stuff on the eggs means a lot of uh, my good Tom is Chris Carter. Just a lot of you know guys I played in that field and stuff like that But yeah, really them guys for sure Very good
Uh, no, just keep going um, you got it you net stuff for sure. Uh, really, I really appreciate it Uh, like a physical defense uh, like like you said like people say like they like to play man They're not changing their skin. So we're just ready for the challenge. Uh, like you said probably the best defense we probably go see all year and we just gotta be ready to go out there Monday and just put on the show Oh, I'm excited for will uh him uh first coming here in Ohio State January our first workout we had together May just everything that we built through the season um May I'm just happy for her for him to be in this position right now, but we got to finish the job and that's the uh win and now the omanda
Oh, I mean, it's pretty funny um Them saying that because I'm just only a freshman but um Missed a blessing for sure people to even say that but I got two three more years left of college and I'm just focused on college right now. I'm not really worried about the NFL right now Oh, it's very special for me. Uh, just being a freshman at Plenty of National Stage uh, up here for national titles something that I dreamed of as a very young kid Um, I'm just happy to be here and I just can't wait to put on some Monday for you guys Uh, mean all the receives we just sit on the bench and we just see him hit the quarterback the ball come out and we all just Got up and they started no jumping up and down. We all decided Uh, happy for jacking that moment and we just knew that that moment like yeah, let's we go on to the ad for sure
Yeah You Ministers a lot um means you know going from high school or when a three-state championship Uh, Shamanama Donna then you know coming to Ohio State uh, just competing for national charter right now I mean just so that I picked two great schools um, but I'm happy to be here and let's get away with the punishment day You The coolest person um, I mean you got a lot. I can't really say just a specific person. You got a lot of great guys We trying to lead like um, oh, Dale you had guys like step on digs um A lot of other players will just get kind of my mom, but really really them two guys be sure oh, Dale a step on this
Yeah Yeah, um, I mean like they say they play man. So I mean I'm just ready for the challenge and just get ready to go out there Monday and just no put them so Thank you Uh, the vice-geno had gave me um, I said just keep golfers um You know he I know the reason why I'm here and Me yeah, like he said just keep golfers and just no keep the man thing and the best corner I'm finished this year Um, I I mean I faced a lot of great corners. Uh, I can't really say but yeah, I'll face a great daughter great corners here really put a name on it I
My dream vacation is uh, turrets and cake goes Oh, good. Are you Uh, I say both respect your first creation as well But I mean, I thought they come out there and triple teaming me and they say stick it to whatever doing our year and that's playing man covers We just ready for the challenge Uh, pretty good group Christian Gary 29 is a great corner 15 uh, Lenard Moore Uh, two great guys are right there Um, very physical, but you know we all highest never see but so we ready for the challenge
Um, I say just no understanding the different understanding the defense uh, understanding the game plan understand what coach Kelly was trying to get done Um, I mean just coming in I felt I progress from our first game gets accrued and now feel like I better each and every week Um, me thinking slowed down a lot for me Um, but yeah, I really just know understanding devices and no understanding what they're trying to do to me for sure You I'm two guys great part of the best we go see all year for sure um, two to physical guys um But you know, we're ready we're ready for the challenge that they're coming with and that's the play man oh man and You know, we ready to go on Monday Yeah Oh, I mean the environment is pretty crazy. Uh, seeing all these cameras uh
Something I never thought I'd see them alive, but uh, some blessings from so this the main this position right now Oh Um, and we just had a prayer live prayer uh, live meeting and you know, we all they all the We all discussed the issues because they discuss issues and you know, we just want the work We're not true and how we we had off before Tennessee game and we just played came out there Um, Tennessee game and we played with a chip on a chip on our shoulder Um, all throughout the playoffs and we go continue to play with that chip on our shoulder in uh, that championship on Monday Uh, do you know how that very uh impactful uh, yeah, the very impact on my career I should say uh, you know, just going to his games as a Uh, very young kid seven eight years old Uh, him playing Westman him playing for West Virginia and they played Clemson Orange Bull down at Miami
Um, he just go like they're seeing his games. It's like yeah, I definitely want to play on that stage and I can't uh wait I get to know that moment for sure There are you Oh Okay, uh, because they really just in his own his own little space. Uh, he's just walking around trying to get his mind right trying to get his mind ready for the game Uh, but you know, he just gave everybody hype in the locker room and you know, just trying to get us ready to go to win the game Yeah Oh Yeah, oh, yeah for sure. I mean You uh, you're gonna play mangas Ohio State receivers. I mean just be ready uh, because you know, we definitely go come out there and know Uh, give our best and I mean they said not to change what they do so we're just ready for the challenge I
Not a year later definitely sometime my career college, but not my first in college, I should say I mean just to be able to be in this position right now is you know, a blessing or just a yoke here from Miami to be here And I won't take it for granted. I'm ready to go out there Monday and give him a draw Yeah Yeah, uh, I mean, yeah, I was watching that game against was it Georgia? I believe yeah, I was in a game Uh, I was pretty sick myself because I was actually committed at that time Um, so I mean yeah, they left a bad testimony mouth, um, but I mean we ready to go out there Monday to redeem myself and you know, just put put a show Monday Oh
I mean me I just laugh But you know, that's what they do they're not gonna change what they do just because we're Ohio State So I'm just gonna go out there and put it on put it on why not to play man on man and guess us so we just got go out there show them my day He said again, sorry Uh My journey here at Ohio State repair me a lot for not your championship me just going through everything that I've been through My first guy here all the uh Matt jurles all the hard work guys that we had all the hard practices Um, just preparing all of this for this moment, and I'm just ready to go out there and give it up my all on Monday Okay, okay We just squeezed this
You 200 me is big and strong Yeah Oh What's the money that is great. Yeah, pretty good. No problem You Uh
The one I probably like the most is the one against Michigan State when I caught over two defenders on the airside line Party like one or the one after that I should say or you go the one against Iowa probably them three probably my best one special Oh, I mean just we'll put in the ball in my area, and I just know how to make a play for Um, even though somebody was grabbing my face. I just know I still how to make a play because the ball touched my hand So I mean just on the ball and everything I have to make the play no matter how the ball comes at me After a big gang um, I mean we really they really feed us chick-fil-a or piece after the game So it's really either chick-fil-a or piece so yeah probably chick-fil-a for sure
You Yeah Uh, it went it went pretty good everybody just uh Speaking with their thing is uh going right and what they think is wrong Which is a lot of the older guys watching their opinions on what we need to do to uh come to get as a team Um, but you know that me and definitely uh helped us in a in a big way because it helped us on the field as well Because we played our great football right now and we got to continue that one Monday Yeah, definitely got emotional uh can't really say uh what really was said because that's my prayer prayers only and coaches only but it would definitely some stuff said that People took uh People took and they uh went with it and that's the reason we planned the reason why we planned right now
Uh, yeah, make helped me a lot this year um him being our older guy in the room um me help me and cartonel as well And Brendan and his and all the guys in our scene room as well me just a great guy as well. It's very smart I mean make just been a big part of the reason that I'm having the season I'm having the look because he's been a big you know Older guy been there being a lot of great guys in our room like Chris a lot of way Garrett Wilson Marvin Harrison Jr. Jackson's making jibba so he's seeing all the grids I've been through there and me teaching us the right thing and the right way and in the buck Got me different not me and I just feel like I had all the offers I Not mean Fuck down like hurting work sites, but it doesn't matter. We can hear enough on the start You know, I felt good. You know, I'm actually like an auto hard work and I
On to that screen on the teaching that coach you gave me and I just paid off I just know this way and playing with the camera They can be too deep as a true freshman outlay the new knowledge and opportunities and have a bigger role this year So what do you expect going for a second? You know, it's working to beat you know, I mean Obviously, you know, we run you know Whatever with having these things or whatever. I mean I'm just working just to beat you know work my tail I was making all for my songs. I can chase basically I got I would say like I got a lot more aggressive and I gave you know I gave some weight now Question 200 pounds Coach Patricia what have you He's a great guy, you know, I like him Oh, no, besides coach, he's a great guy. He cares about his players. You know, I was so football wise He's a master behind us. He is well respected. He's football business You know, and it's time being in that field, so I think he's gonna fuck you
Start a I expect you know just to add value Oh, yes, for sure, I feel like I'm starting to use to everything here And I feel like I'm just trying to pull on the last I just I was gonna say you know my instead of the beginning was spring You know, you know, you have more ideas, you know so far so You know, we're trying to stay determined Just gotta venture if you're having an A and B rule you have a beer rule that we're filling in Obviously, you know right now plans You know, no craft myself and you know me myself over top of the scene wherever I go
Limiting his reps, right obviously So you know, I was making this, you know, and for him you'd be ready, you know, why does this all just working? Skipping Thank you for your show and you know So like there's some stuff that at least we they you did over there in order to aim that We'll see if we're able to kind of implement some of it here. I'm sure some maybe not others depending on What are guys do best Christ I was seeing today because it's like it's a fresh start I knew said eyes on him and I think it's an opportunity to be multiple and use him and what he does best, you know, so That's the exciting thing you know when you really study what coach Patricia has done in the past is he likes to take like who are like who are our players and then let's build it around those guys and I think CJ has had a hell of a winner. I think he's one of those guys So I'm excited to see how we be creative and use him the interest spring That mean you see how to be like float is more of an edge defender kind of differently than you guys. I think yeah
I think he has that I think that's exactly what kind of like potential CJ has is the ability to You know get on the edge move around the nice thing about that is is that You're not handicapped just with CJ doing one thing off the edge You think you have the ability because he understands conceptually Zone drops linebacker terminology, right? You can get really creative how you use him But I think he definitely needs to be utilized more as a just go to the heart pack go go be disruptive I What about Matt is a leader of you guys this coaches Are you as the old fit was you guys and how are you seeing that and How to feel about the higher first one. I love the higher I got a lot of respect for coach Patricia Like ever since he worked me a market sound back here and we were talking about that when you first was and the interview process
Just kind of fast time goes, but I'm really excited just to continue to learn like I said like there's some it's funny because there's some terminology that When I was at Notre Dame you can use and I can at least speak some of his language with what he's called things before and you're trying to morph everything to go on the right With these things that we've done what he knows what do like it's a lot and But he's been incredible with I think the staff he's very organized. He's detailed You'll have Constant clear communication, you know, I may have we're gonna get together at this time and doing like you're sufficient in your role And it's been a lot like when you're come from Outside and you come back into it and you have to try to catch him up on the recruiting board It's it you know like you have a lot of these conversations. Okay, what are we looking for at these positions now? How do you see it? Because you don't under one coordinator. You might see a the mic line back and used to be this and under this coordinator Well, I think the mic back needs to be this like so you have to have those conversations at every position and
I just kind of keep going through and But I'm just excited to learn think the more systems to mean look Play in the system here in college play the system underneath the Spagnolo play the system in Tim Baldwin play the system under Greg Williams that a silent Coach of the Al Gold and then Jim Nalt like Every one of those there's like different terminology for everything so you're just you're learning a different language Call and think you know, I mean versus concepts and Think it was kind of collect over time what you think is Really good stuff and how you do stuff a big deal a little different. I'm just really excited to learn from that I'm so excited. He seemed very excited over there talking really to be here. Yeah function college, which yeah, whatever so long What's his personality like with you guys and yeah, he's been great. I mean his energy is incredible He's very he is he's authentically excited to be back in college football You could tell there's like a yearning to get back to Like the why you got the coaching right is that impact young people's the impact and teach the game of football
And so the future has been a fun, you know kind of like talking to the guys. You know sense like He's excited to just teach ball. You know what I mean? Kind of ironically like you know similar to a lot of other things that chips that last year, right? You gotta get back and you're like, man, I'm just excited to And so if he has that excitement He's done a phenomenal job. I think of getting other players Just kind of like walking around versus like popping in making sure that he's in front of them and they get to know him and He gets to know them and it's a lot that you can imagine when you come in you have all these guys, right and Trying to learn all these guys. I'm learning recruiting trying to learn to staff and learn dynamics like it's a lot But he's handled it really well You know, he's an old school ball coach. He's a grinder James probably not gonna need to do much this spring how much more can you get done with the young guy? Not on him that But in terms of Ryan Daird, he said you know, thank you for saying 75% or whatever How much more can you get done with the young guys when they're not worried too much about the senior?
Yeah, I think I mean You're always just looking for competition Especially like at Sprimball of mess with it's all about right you're trying to have It's so cliche, but it's true like the iron sharpener's iron mentality of You want your room to be super competitive To where Hey, the guy I'm trying to be makes a play Game my next set of four plays I got there. I have the point right and it's a constant driving of the room Forward and so yeah, so he gets 50 or how many reps off 50% rubber coach said Then that means a more opportunity for somebody else to play right so that need more for our foul is that scheme flexibility with our Valor we paid pierce around every it's that TJ Riley you like all these guys stove We're all gonna get more rutsch. I think it's great. So we got to do it this point in season But I think you know, yes, there's still stuff that within their level of Sunni is that he's gonna be Clon to try to get those rubs
because he's a he's a true pro and Yeah, that's been the most enjoyable thing about I think working with him is like You get a kid who's played safety his whole life comes the backer and he just wants to learn the why behind everything and You know very similar to the fact of Cody like we have guys where that easy to work with you're not trying to like Now worried about texting anybody in our room About coming over and trying to learn all you know, I mean like were you at you know like They're obsessed with the game of football. They're always around when they're not at class So it's like it makes it really easy as a coach because they're passionate for the game and so strong You mentioned you see today in terms of the higher with the map just looking sunny like what what do you envision more with him with all of that stuff? I think I think we just have a lot of guys with a lot of links You tell about sunny styles long Conron our values long It's crazy because you see sunny. You're like, okay, this guy like I Wish I was built like that when I played and then you see our valve stand next to sunny. You're like
You know those you know what I mean? It's like and then you look across the room like as the room warms up You're like holy smokes like we just have a bunch of guys and that's a lot of credit to to make coach make as a phenomenal job. I was just Talking to burn about it like To see even our meteor guys what they looked like when they showed up grants like the bowl of the hola and He run and they're kind of hanging out during practice and see the high school bodies to see what they look like today before they go away And like the shoulders are all like everything is just different and they've been And doctorated into the brotherhood So I think you know, there's just a lot to work with and so what he's really good at right is like he's talked about it One year he has junior say out willing to get us Mike variable, you know Roosevelt, Colvin and those guys And then a couple years later he has Brandon spikes. So he's like okay, which I just blitz brand at the middle all the time She's two and 60 pounds of beast
He always says he was my best nose guard And from Mike backer right and then the year after that he gets you know got Jamie Collins and Dante high telling it So now we can do a lot of stuff right so There's not just like hey, this is what we're doing. We got plucky blood. Hey, here's what we got Let's utilize it. So that's what strength will be Walgone the lab and figure out what that means. I'm sure through spring ball. There'll be like Hey, here's what We do really well as a unit because this unit is gonna be different Right, but you know, there's a lot of production. So the unit will be different So you kind of got to reform your own identity and Yeah, we heard that civil bullet big name and mantra How many guys can look at our bell Just like he's on a very good track. Is that it? Just puts his ceiling It's just a lot right now. He's locked in. He's done a great job becoming a leader Coming out of his shell and thinking I think for belly. It's all about his sister-seed just preparation and I'm proud of our bell, you know, he's through the season. You got way better at
You know a lot of it's like little things just note taking stuff like sometimes you have to These kids are always on their phones and stuff not like the meeting rooms or anything like that, but just naturally So like to get out of pen paper and like You hear things in the mail. Yeah, I got it What you do until your dog tired and then you forget because you know, I mean But when you really understand it, you know, I mean like go play faster. He got so much better through the year Just a lot of that's because of Cody like becoming a pro And then now it's like sonny's pulling him along. He's pulling pain along the pain to fall into DJ and Riley and Eli so I can still like So I kind of love the competition room right now in the way it's made up Yeah, he's on a great path We're not how many different guys do you feel like can be in that Mike's spot? Appreciate that was obviously losing Cody and now having that Well, I think that's something that's fluid as we kind of go Because you know week one sonny actually started out Mike for us and sonny smart off to play them all Our bell is smart of the play them all
I mean here's a smart off to play them all Um, and that's also like how did you like depends on what what scheme you're running where they how do they being utilized as well? You know what I mean? Um, so You can say my like my backer, you know, whether it's Tommy I convert grow up in research two different people and Cody's different from those two so I challenged to like a lot of the guys that come in and so you got the other both the more you understand about the scheme in general The faster you will play you know what I mean like If I just sit here and I say hey, I got a lot of Mike My drop is this and that's all I need to know like Well, no, football happens so fast and all the shifts and motions that like If you're out there just playing and you're waiting for a call And you're just reacting like you're so worried about what's going on on your side of the ball You don't even recognize that the offense is telling you something's what they're doing so If I'm out there and also I'm not gonna call I know what the call should be It's like hey, are we playing you know, let's go
Now listen you get it you can look like a see okay. Here's what the tight ends doing That's what the backs doing here's what plays are coming If you just lie up the place run or pass every time like you know, stay in chance You got to eliminate plays in your mind by seeing what the offense is doing like they tell you a story every time They line up they just window dressing My people motion to chance to try okay. Are they trying to do man zone indicators? Are they trying to make sure that They're getting the same formation. They're in the same place But they just shift the people and then they motion and they move and they don't want you to recognize So for always worry about what work you don't mean so the more you know Faster you can play because you're not sitting there thinking oh, what do I have for your react? So I know you have so my challenge to guys like There's always a no both so think a lot of just beyond On depth trick guys get you know if Sunnies only doing 50 to 75% of the plays and probably more guys get more Will reps than they had because we need More will bodies is that's technically where Sunnie started but We'll rotate them through Show what it does Think sometimes you know you'll live with some mistakes just from
Didn't use the spot that you'll be able to judge to like who's actually Getting the book, you know, I mean who's actually studying? How much of a break have you seen from Sunnie this time of year go through the national championship game and then what's next? Man, I mean Definitely, I know I know Sunnie has big goals and you should Um, I do as well for him and To see how far he's come you know first thing kind of stands out is just like his His footwork has gotten so much better You know when you're in the boxes and linebacker you gotta be able to Remember loop thickly to stay all the time and you gotta be slow till it's time to be fast and when you're twitchy like he is A lot of times you know when you're about safety or you used to pulling a trigger and rolling like you got to You gotta learn how to shuffle and not cross over and he got so much better as a year or not Think a lot of people question whether he'd be able to hold up physicality wise and you know He was he was great, you know, he used to season god. He's really good with his hands. He's a really natural ability to snag
We'll keep challenging him. I think he should be a dominant guy in coverage Like he needs to be a guy that we can put on a tight end and be like he's not gonna be in catching the ball You know what I mean because he has that athleticism I think we need a challenge in there Challenge them. I think everything is just Missed on just sunny. It's everybody's urgency in zone coverage. I mean The urgency with you have to break on the football To close that space the not the ball carrier have so much space on you to They're cut making miss is critical. I think sometimes he's he can be so athletic They you know, you can get away some stuff and he knows like anything that I'm saying right now. Here he knows So Best part is a lot of times like he'll come to me Before film and already say like man coach on that play. I should have you know to me like he knows And the best part is that he's humble enough our whole run is that they just want to be they want to be pushed and they want to be coached And so So I always ask like what do you need for me just just keep making sure like you're pushing it. Oh, let me settle. Let me settle
So Um, yeah, I mean I think going into it You know, I think it's just accomplished the the plan and whatever play was called whatever maybe just go out there and execute it One thing we appreciate is execution is is really the motive You know, I need to be called but as long as everybody's mindset is has one mentality which is uh Just go get in and you know, make sure there's no yard gain. I think that that changes the The mindset of everybody on the cerebral defense. They feel like big changes to you all as they were ongoing or I mean at first like you know, it was a tough loss So you know, I think it felt like everything was big But then when you kind of just take your time to look at everything analyze everything. It was just like man We just we just need to keep everything simple Make everything and just just uh just about us and you know not like feel like we're Um, you know, making everything about them. It's you know, we can dictate what they do and I think that was the mindset
Did mate letterman wrong? Yeah GT I know you get to watch a little bit of video Of Caleb and uh, Lathen and Jordan what stands out about that group from your from your vantage point? Oh, they're Relentless man. I mean, Lathen Caleb and I mean everybody in that BIA core Yes, they could cover but you know when it's time to you know stop the run They'll they'll come down 12 yards out however How far off the frontline scribes are coming, you know, though the nose in there and you know, I respect them for that because There's gonna be times where we need them make them tackles and I mean they're displaying it this whole season Yeah, how critical are they in a game of this magnitude? Obviously everybody's critical But you know me that yeah sort of the last line of defense, but sometimes the last line of offenses in the middle of it Yeah, I mean they play a huge role. I mean like you said it takes everybody From the front four it's like a check reaction the front four don't do their job then you know falls, you know The back end so we off to work as a collective unit and I think there's a reason that there's 11 of us out there And you know, it's crazy if one person is doing their job then you know something to go wrong But if we just all continue to stay
Communication with one another continue to just lay each other know we have each other's backs and just trust one another And man, I think that that performance is gonna be off the charts Yeah, hungry and thankful. I mean, we know how the last last time when you know we Had a chip on our shoulder. I mean, we're riding high before that game and we took that loss and we came back Had to make a couple changes, but I think we understand what you know everything's that stick right now Um, you know just fighting to where another house stages for next year And that's what's on stake and just to be able to represent this this uh this state and this uh this team I mean we understand what's that? What's on the line and you know, we're just hungry and blessed that we get this opportunity playing the Rose Bowl Right behind your Adam thing though you be honest What do you remember most about walking off the field in Eugene? What was kind of all your mind in that moment? I just uh I mean there was uh
I don't think anybody imagined it imagine us losing um, you know, I didn't That's for sure, and I think after that it was uh Kind of head deep, but I understand it that man We still there's still a lot of ball left to be played I mean you can let it sting for a little bit, but you know if you let it carry over too long then you know There goes there goes your whole um season by thing we did a great job of just Understanding coming together in this room right here Um, not being afraid to display um or hold accountability from one another and you know as as that happened He came back regrouped and you know, we just You're going right now um, and I'm just blessed for those specific moments, you know losing I mean no one wants to lose The testimonies and the things are taught within those little situations speaks of all of them You know, do you see the last couple of weeks that Was there like a push from him?
Yeah, I mean that's that's my boy. He's in the r2x club too, but um, you know Keata, I mean every time there's his numbers called he goes out there and makes the most of it no matter Where where we at in the game when he goes out there he's just hungry He wants to go make plays and and you know, we see it and practice those it's not surprising to us There were bit of it to play this back Still in gave us obviously very elusive and our talent and he's not very tall How important it could be to just kind of stay in your Past rush lanes and neglect a lot of balls and kind of make a difference that way Yeah, I think it just comes on being disciplined No one who you're playing against like you said don't he's a he sure but he's very elusive. I mean he can He is making throws. I mean he get out the pike. He can do everything So I think for us we just have to discipline and just continue to just Meet with coach Jay me with the coach knows and understand how we can just eliminate that What should about you and Jack? I mean Your personality seem to be a little different you more on the quiet side. He's
How you play together four years both five four guys kind of describe your relationship with him Friendship with him. Yeah, just kind of how you pop them on each other Man, that's my brother like he said. We're different but very alike Think outside like you said he's louder. I'm quiet, but you know, once we're on that field like the same person We'll do anything for this team. You know, we'll die for our players and we'll give everything we got Yeah, fall camp Yeah, sometimes go over there. So over there We have our share of days when we when I'm neat. He's neat or you know, we might both be messy, but we do a good job Yeah, I'd probably say I would better kick the jack though When you're playing a team for the second time and that was almost a season to go by now How much of are you at square one with with this scouting and preparation or how much do you take in that game?
How much do you avoid taking so that you don't have any creative Notions of what you're going up against offense on the offensive line. I say it's pretty 50 50 I mean that game like you said it was a while ago, but at the same time they elevated as a team So did we so we understand that they they had they made some changes for sure You know, there's team there's a certain density we can take back from that game But we also understand that um they went on a low run after that and we can see that they elevated as an offense So we just got to continue to watch those games dissect the other games and just continue to see um What stands out and what they change from the for the past game We got a couple calls on zoom that will wrap up with first we have Nick Hamilton from nightcast media Yeah Uh Just wanted to ask you basically about the synergy of this defense and how you guys were able to Uh not only celebrate the triumphs but get through the adversity be able to be this top notch defense that you are in college football today
Uh Here you need to question one more time. Yeah no problem Uh one to ask you about the synergy you are we're able to develop over course of the season Obviously celebrating the triumphs but also getting through the adversities to where you go all other top notch defense that you all are today Yeah, I mean like you said that we went through a lot of trials to trials But there's also there's a lot of things we can take away from all the wins and losses Um and from those those wins we understood that hey we can be the best defensive country and from those losses We understand that there's still um things that need to be fixed and I think when you take all that in at once Um That comes out to the the common goal or the common talk which is you can there's always learning points everywhere and Depending how we dissect those games or how we just continue to come as one and elevate um, you know, we we continue to just um collect all those those learning points and just continue to grow from them And one final question Joey Coffman Columbus dispatch Joey JT uh what have what have you guys done better and the
Especially in the Tennessee game and just late in the season you think about turning some of the the pressures that you've got on a quarterbacks and the sacks and getting a home in some of those situations Yeah, I think it was more just uh understanding the defense as a whole understanding everybody's job Think as the season went on we had to understand that you know, we have to know what's going on the back And we have to know what's going on to the linebacker crew to understand uh What plays we have room of freedom and I think once we understood that and got a better understanding of the of everybody's job I mean it it showed this play because you know everybody knows what each other's doing It's not like the lineback's know what they're doing Uh, the corners and be I they know only their job I think we all know each other's job and we continue to ask each other questions Um on you know if they're blitz on how they can get to the quarterback and you know if I'm dropping Playing for backs by I can ask Cody on how to open field tackle So you know, we just we just kind of lean on each other's understanding because uh, you know Um like I said like Denzel knows how to play corner bend it and I know how to play corner
So you know, he has more more wisdom at that position than I do JT thank you very much. Thank you More and more Um, I don't know that yeah, I kind of dispensary for you to say I don't know my role I don't know of the engine out yet. So once we'll get no Through the protocols and NFOPA we'll we'll talk about no the schemes and everything Right Hello, so welcome when you were in Denver in the three four where did you find yourself most comfortable most effective in my role? Um, I played a lot of different positions in uh Denver. I mean earlier in my year I played zero I played three two one. I mean I definitely more comfortable in a shaded position mainly being uh three technique and five technique That's why I found myself to be more comfortable and whether I'm standing up or I'm not Or there's runner or pass uh those seem to be my best my best fits And what is your impression of
And hold in five and see how Uh from afar it seems like he uh, he holds in on a defense a lot Uh, I can't really say too much about that. Yeah, I don't I know pcare very little So uh, I'm just trying to figure out more and I'll give you a better answer later Uh, you know hard knows hard hat type of team um definitely on the little more laksight as opposed to being no stuck up or Military style and um, which is definitely good because then they this program is more than a lot of football games They've been super successful for many years as long as I've been alive and as long as I've been watching football and Deppley this has been a good program and Pete Carroll has been a hell of a coach for the longs-dark remember and you and back in his college days So I'm looking forward to experiencing that Tell him well Yeah, I know you said you don't know yet, you know what your role can be but what what kind of player are you that you know for fans who haven't Watch the time of Denver what kind of player does he have to get? Oh, definitely a high motor um definitely not a one trick point type of player
I like to attack No, whether it's first or first to before now. I like to attack. I'm always trying to apply pressure Um, I'm definitely just a high motor guy might be Maybe Oh, they're pretty understant for me. I spend nice to meet you. That's a good Yeah, this is not a team that really makes big splash sign in this in brand new seed Did you think going into it that Seattle would be in play? Uh, no not at all You just it's kind of like being a cure at the candy store here now got a whole bunch of different options coming at you You're in a whole bunch of different crazy things and uh, you know, you only get to choose one and this is the place that We both chose each other and I mean, I'm loving Seattle so far, you know, I like these colors What want to do that to do in Seattle and see some season? Um, not much Just kind of just drive around the city exploring Get down to the market a little bit I want to get on the Ferris wheel do some more like touristy type things, you know I'm new to the city and I got a lot to learn about city
Larry I know Michael bearer then it like nothing I don't know nothing about it But um besides his style of play But I'm honored to be considered in the same conversation as him and uh style of play You know, he's a hall of fame type of deep lime and that I've known about A kid I mean last time he played here. I was in high school. So you know, it's cool to It kind of came full circle a little bit watching him on TV and now I'm being kind of compared to him in a way You know, I mean, I'm not touching the surface of Michael Bennett, you know, he's a hall of fame and I'm not there yet So you know, I just gotta keep doing my due diligence to be a better player Hey dream out welcome to Seattle. I know you get to play several seasons for big fan geo and Yeah, three four style defense and Seattle's playing a similar system now to the back to last year I've been defensive line and what do you think is most important to be successful in that system maybe fundamentals or
Just playing style to be successful Um just from what I learned being gap sound and uh being patient It's always been the biggest thing and that's how we've been successful when I was in Denver Just kind of like relying on each other. I know that sounds kind of cliche, but like this kind of like the The realm of being in three four defense. You got to really really rely on the the guys behind you and the guys on side of you To really make their to do their job to make your job easier Ha Um, yeah, dream up You're a you're a high school You know, I guess No, no, I'm always love football first It was just kind of just time to just playing it out, you know, I let a hoop But you know football was definitely my calling given I was 265 pound Power forward and I was like six degrees from jane. So you know, I kind of chose a route that you got gave me. No, I'm not six eight
My Um, just from a standpoint like I always get like over over shadowed over look whether it's uh And something you know, I was saying like I I feel like I do a lot more than what can be uh sitting by the the eyes of the inexperienced no scout And I do a lot of different dynamic things that help make place for others, you know I'm definitely an active player. I'm always doing something weather in the run of past games So nothing that goes on others sometimes and um, I'm looking forward to putting people on notice Brady What uh what do you like to do outside of football? What is for me? Uh Big gamer um, I'm definitely I've been getting to a lot of chess lately. So I just to expand my brain
I'm trying to get into reading, but if it's not supported later I don't I really not interested in reading that much, but mainly just video gaming in chess Right Uh, I mean you can say you can say jamerat Jones, I mean, but like just I'm like personally just call me Jerry because easy because people like to F my name but like a lot like a lot and they call me Jerry Montet. I don't know why you put a Jerry Montet in my name or Jerry Montet. Whatever you want to say I just go by a drain to keep it simple y'all thank you Michael Sean Hey, Dre, what's the simple thing you bring to the CMOS as a past book? Uh, some of the new era of the past question, you know someone was on the little lighter side of the average through technique and Bring that explosiveness that quickness Someone was great with their hands. Someone was very extensible and someone was a go-getter when it comes to the run-in passenger Appreciate yeah Yet
Yeah, I was aware I mean like Yeah, I am flattered I mean she'd actually just traded me from the jump, but uh It was it was cool to I guess it kind of came full circle for Seattle a little bit I was included into the trade and Denver said no and then Denver kind of I want to say that word but Denver didn't pay my part respects so I'm here because they were every spectrum from the jump Hi, anything else guys? Thank you, what are things doing? We're all learning so um, it's been really good How much were you talking to Kayne as you got here and kind of going through that first year obviously Doing his own thing, but just what this is all like Yeah, no, I think having him go through the whole process is The thing you know kind of having you know him in my corner just so you know talk to your call You know whenever I need you know, we still talk tough a lot and like I have some questions whenever You know, so you know, I first got here he was you still hearing no training everything
Yeah, it fell so um, you know, it's been you know like I have him whenever so Yeah, no, it's been a tough and the super happy forum, you know, he's uh Down there in Houston, you know, CJ and everything I think you know, he really likes it so uh, you know I'm excited to see what he does this next time I Yeah, I can think you kind of realize that you know, this is you know, this is your life You know, you got to you know come in here placing a high state like playing with the best ever since the day You know, you got the time in you know, you got to uh, you know, got make side prices, you know to you know What you want to get out of it in the end? You know long-of-life you know school just you know live on your own and you know it's it's good for you to do a lot and you know As you get it just makes you better overall
You know just shown the way around this the building, you know, just you know, how how we do it here at the high state how we operate Um, you know, they You know, I think all three young guys coming in have done a great job. You know, they've You know, great work ethic, you know, I think uh, you know for me, you know the offseason is more like a lead by example Kind of thing And spring a little bit of no vocal leadership in there as well, but you know just kind of working with them and you know Kind of showing them how you know Build a guy's and how we do things in the room is you know definitely carried on to Being a part of that I guess what did you learn from that one thing went on you guys went on and I I guess What do you learn about like what it takes? This is the problem. Um, I would just say you know staying together You know our biggest thing was each week was just trying to keep keep that group together each week and uh, you know I think last year we had such a strong bond together You know with all the guys. I think that was really the motivation
You know just staying together and like like a band of brothers James pop it on the path. I think I'm You know Yeah, I mean I think You know just starts with you know coming out the practice every day You know, head down just Making sure you're going hard every single play, you know, you know, we're doing You know, so you can build that trust But I think you know just having the guys around you like you know like sunny or velk and you know You know, you know, been in there, you know playing in games and everything like that You know, to lean on and I'm asking questions and stuff. So you're ready I'm like 227 It's still 25 right now. I think it'll come up to like
Feel a sense of urgency Part of that to be To Yeah, I mean I All right now kind of focus on just getting better soon. They think it's kind of spring's for you is You know individually just you know continue to perfect your craft every single day Well, yeah, I mean, I think that's you know, definitely Honestly I think just saying I had the chance and getting getting past those third downs Converting on the third downs. I mean, that's what we got to be better at At the end of the day we got to put him in zone We're not doing that. We're not doing our job. So I think guys create more explosive plays as an offensive right. I think you stick with it You know the explosive plays are going to come and Now he's got to trust that and they'll be there for us for sure
Coach stands has been here for Highs and loads over the many many years he's been with this program now What sort of his message to your group right now or when you're turning to him Well, what is he saying as far as how to get through this? Yeah, so I think it's just really just Coming in attacking every day as you would Regardless and you know staying staying even even through hardship and attacking it attacking it the same way every day That's really all you can do and You just get a little better every day and see where it takes you Based on the way things already we're setting up, but then also a Jason Simmons was calling the game on Saturday. It seemed like tight ends are gonna be a big Part of this as you guys are trying to pull out and what world do you think you guys are gonna have and trying to get this offense Yeah, I think we I think the role is always try to help the offense move the ball and Whether they were called upon to do that in the past game or the run game We just got to step up and do our job at a high level and whatever you ask from us We just got to do it at high level and let the offense go
You're some of leaders on the offense some of leaders. I would say Gus is a big leader I mean he's been doing it for a while and I and it's someone that everyone trust Is gonna do his job at a high level and I think we have Hudson's a good leader too as well Obviously, he's a quarterback. So he takes on that leadership role and I think We just have a good amount of leaders You know throughout the offense We were told George might be fairly close to getting back what we mean to get him back in the mix with the Titans Yeah, it'd be great. I mean George is a great athlete. So having him out there can only help You know, we're really excited about him and what you can do on the field. So it'd be great They don't care about that up here. So you know, it's developing yourself to have a great mindset early You know having that grown man mindset at 18 years old It's really important because my opinion don't really care about feelings So it's about you know, just coming up here, you know being a man that you think you are You know having to go out there and you know prove it
David what's been the easiest thing in the most difficult thing about your transition years so far? The easiest thing I would say I mean it's really not easy about this You know coming to a top program like this, you know, especially coming off from national championship It's really not easy. You know, they're pushing for the same thing. They trying to go back and back So I mean we just got to come up here. We got to step up But the hardest thing I would say you know, just just having to grow up You know going from high school where you know, I've been the man there for three years So I mean coming up here where you started the bottom again So I mean, I told my parents it's all the time like you know, I think my history is repeating itself Because when I went into high school the high school I went to her a powerhouse So I was at the bottom there and had to work my way up and I feel like that's just repeating so here And I met the bottom here, you know, I put myself at the bottom So I have to work my way up to the top and so no just going to get these guys They're competing every day. You're not gonna get a day off Where you know she was just coming out here just just be essence So I mean you got to you got to be a piece of cute all the time when you see what a guy like
Sorry When you see what a guy like JJ did last year coming in here playing immediately Is that inspired you to want to be able to do the same thing as a freshman? I mean definitely you know Just just what he did last year is a true freshman You know him being able to play an impact team like that obviously I want that for myself So you know, I'm gonna push myself to that limit You know try to be on the field here one that's my plan. That's the biggest reason I came here because I have an opportunity to play You're one so me having that opportunity is good and you know, I'm gonna I'm always gonna come out here and compete Like I said, I'm putting myself at the bottom. So I'm working. I'm gonna work every day like I'm at the bottom And I gotta get to the top. How well what do you feel like it's gonna take for you to get from the bottom? You know just just discipline They're big on discipline here and you know competitive excellent So it's just staying consistent every day Just doing the rights Having little to none mental errors. That's gonna give me on the field And you know, I do I do what I'm supposed to do that's that's gonna give me on the field along those lines
How do you manage those expectations for people to think that you should be playing week one when the season comes around? How do you manage people? You know, I don't really let you get to my head because you know, like I'm here You know, I got dudes in the room that are you know like I should be you know, he's three or three years start I got your main personal American, you know, he's gonna play this year too So I can't let what people say on the net, you know, get to me because you know, anybody can say oh He's gonna play this year, but you know, I should got to prove it. So I just gotta come out here, you know, work You know, and that spot what's the most important to you learning so far? You three months here? Um compete and everything That's that's the biggest thing Having to compete, you know, these guys appear they take winning and losing to heart So no My first my first week up here when we did our competition, you know, I was winning Then I actually I got that first loss on my belt and you know, it kind of opened my eyes to like these guys take it hard when they lose They don't like it so you know, I kind of got that now where I don't like losing So you had you had the opportunity to be around the team for that, you know, CFP Ron
What did you learn from just those few weeks seeing this team make that run? Uh, you know being real tight with your brothers, you know, they're they're real tight Um, you know, they they push each other, you know, it's a real brotherhood Uh, they don't let nobody down. They always got each other back. So I mean, it's a new team now So, you know, we got to build that chemistry with each other, you know, just just get tight and I feel like when I was there for that playoff running and I practiced When they were at the national championship, you know, I just got to watch, you know, how guys are, you know, real locked in Uh, they're close with each other They're not letting nobody slack off and you know, I feel like we had the opportunity to do that with this team now That first loss, you know, it kind of got to me. It was the IGB, you know, he you know, he let me hear So after that loss, I was like, nah, I can't let this happen because it's like Now it's not high school where you 17, 16 years old and if you lose, you lose Up here is not if you lose the coaches see that so and they go see how you respond to it So I feel like I had a I had to, you know, open my eyes, I had to go and lock them like, yeah, okay
I can't let this happen anywhere, you know, so I got to grow up and you know, these guys are counting on me too So it's really important that I don't lose if you had to describe yourself as a competitor How would you do that? I'm a great competitor, you know, I like winning uh, who doesn't like me So I mean, winning is it's in my blood, you know, my parents taught me that at a young age, you know Going out there competing for anything that you want and I feel like if you can go out there to peep for it You know as yours and if you can peep for it all the time, who don't take it from me So I mean, I'm a good competitor. I'm always gonna go out there and try to take what's mine and if it's out there Then me anybody can have it. I'm gonna be the one to get it Uh, yeah, I mean it could come out on you know, but I don't really I'm gonna go my game through the talking For this part, um, but you know, if it gets there it gets to that point where yeah, I can bring it out because you know regardless I'm not just gonna let nobody just come out here and just you know catch balls on me So if I'm having a good day when I'm consistently getting pb us, yeah, I'm gonna talk But you know being in that room you kind of got to talk, you know, jame you got IGB, you know
Those those real talkers in that room. So it kind of it kind of makes you want to bring it out And you know when you bring that out that just brings energy out and hold defense and when you got the whole defense clicking I mean you can see you can see what happened Is there anyone that's kind of a competition you have? It was during the winter we were doing you know, just just stuff on the field We was just just just having the time of the field just a lot of competitions So I mean he just kind of It was a day where you know, they had us going up against just the freshmen and then they kind of threw us in there and fired against the older guys So we had to you know, we had to wake up and you know, we all kind of lost and it all kind of like we all kind of can't get that The freshman group like what are we going to do about this because you know, some of their kind of mess to to step up in those roads Yeah, definitely definitely definitely my work in college moments, you know, you know, just just showing that you know Is real now a metal high-oh-state? I'm not in Houston, Texas. No more in my school Far from my family, you know, I got a wake up. I got a grow. I got a mature fast And you know, I just got to get ready for the next level. You've mentioned high school a couple times
How did you know grow it up there in Texas playing at that level? How do you feel like that? How do you prepare for a high-oh-state? I feel like you prepare good, you know, I feel like I want to power house in Texas. We obviously ran the Houston area You know, we've been running the Houston Air for a long time now and I feel like you know, we're a real college program Uh, we live just like these guys who do the same lifts Uh, you know, the level of ball I play the highest level ball in the Texas 6A Uh, you know, we're going against guys like donkibil, no collar those those top schools, uh, you know, receive the Korean more I go against and I want to get some three times in my career So I mean those those that really prepared me for this level, uh, you know Coming in like okay, this is not where This is it's a little school where oh, they don't they don't believe that I can come here and make an impact I came from big school so they're they're counting on me to make an impact because you know, I think I mean everybody would say Texas is one of the highest football players in the country You know, it goes us floated and they're probably Georgia So I mean they're counting on me to be ready and that level ball prepared me real real well I do do against the Korean
Uh, you know, uh, it was it was when when lose when lose, uh, you know, I went some he lose some So I mean it's it's it's just it's just getting better on sharpen iron because you know, he's the top receiver obviously in our class You know, I feel like he's gonna have a good impact at the working. Uh, so I mean it's just it's just Just what's gonna happen next? Like a part of seeing him again. Yeah, definitely definitely I you know, I plan on planning against him uh, we don't we want to see them this year. Hopefully we see them in the big ten championships You know, I want I want to rematch me. Devin you committed Super early in the process six months after that you shut things down when Quite frankly someone of your caliber didn't have to do that you could have You've seen kids play the game a little bit longer than that, but you chose to not do that. It's kind of like it here Why? You know, cuz this was this was this was where I felt this was home Uh, you know, I didn't really feel like you know standing Texas was a good thing for me I didn't I didn't feel like that was home for me Up here. I just saw like it was home. You know, because of all and cuz they you know, they're making it You know, making me feel important up here and then you know, you can ask us what how many times I came up here
Throughout my high school career I came for 13 times. So it got to the point where I was knowing the guys on the team I had the numbers to fight that knocked him up here. You know, I don't got to always build the coaches Some of the guys on the team. So it's just just me, you know, knowing where I want to put my college ball at You know, knowing where I felt like it was home and then you know, it was also my parents to know my mom being You know, feeling safe that you know, I'm up here, you know, I'm handling the business and not having to worry about me when she goes to sit I've been practicing C.I. for you and I think it's in the other Uh, coach Hardline in the room Coach Dredger stepped up and he's helped us out Everything he's a big help and I just like make sure we stand time for my stuff We're just talking about stepping into a big hole in the slide. How much do you watch? I like that every day Try and take things whether it's preparation stuffy those on the field and just learning from a guy like that. Yeah Every time I watch film I watch him So I just thought to take some of this game and I had it to my
Airbrice and largest two I take some of this all the receivers Yeah, they always help me out And Like into this room It's a big step definitely It definitely holds a lot like a shoulder. So you gotta gotta gotta gotta take quick It's definitely a big dream for my It's never been you know, I'm blessed to be here. You won that. Yeah Yeah Even before spring wall sorry Try not to take everything personally like I'll say like We know time will come we will make a comment segment that play And I'll be looking forward to that day and Daniel play book because I still gonna get you in farther life and farther in this game
Like How much is patient to requirement Obviously you don't get off the field But how much is patient to I'm not everybody has the same route so some people always have a weekend term You just got Awesome Ever since Christ車
I I'm going to show you this very, very hard car. It's not too hard to say. Thank you.
Once again, if you're listening to our interview, I'm going to be talking about the show. I felt like about that. I'm going to talk to you. I'm going to talk to you. I'm going to talk to you. This is the first time I met him. We just find it really good. What do you think he can bring to the top? You know, we don't have to do that. I don't know if they love you or... It's like the blocks you do. I don't know if they love you or if they love you. What's the way you just do enough to count for you being out of fun? That's going to spoil our lives. I don't know if they love you or if they love you. They help you to just put on this. Yeah, it's going to be a challenge for this. It's going to be a different thing. How to state the crew here. There's a fun you were just going to put along. That is definitely definitely so. It's a fly out here. You can get a new generation of recruits where... I don't think anybody outside left me in a room with questions, the strength of your commitment, like you're locked in the last eight, you sent it over and over. But you're making visits around the country.
You see other schools. It's almost a totally different mindset. What's that code to be in the last decade? How do you approach those other visits? And how do you communicate with Ohio State about them? What's been the message that you've got? I think you're talking about that. I just like the day. I know that I'm always lucky. I'm still enjoying buses. I'm still enjoying buses. I just only have one time. So, you know, for the second. Enjoy it. So, other schools, I've said it online. Yes, we're really hard to try to get to the flip. So, Ohio State. I don't know what to say about what to be. What is it that made you want to take home? I'm not going to put out one specific film. I'm going to have to leave it to you. I can find yourself in the grocery. Do you get frustrated in moments like that in the ball time? I'm in the way. Definitely. A little bit of both. Obviously, I just wanted the team to win. I think you got a chance to win. No, definitely towards it. And then it stretched out last drive.
I was a couple of plays here. A couple of calls that he made me should have gotten. But I think the frustration more so it just comes from. You know, wanting to win more or anything. That's a little surprise. How much attention you got right away from your defense. I have a view. Yeah, definitely. We maybe gave them more one-on-ones kind of how the game playing was set up. You didn't got a different coverage out of cloud to my side. I just kind of had to gain those games. What's the process been, like sometimes, where, or whatever reason? Just to see that. Yeah, definitely. Especially in college, a lot of the game fans defensively were taking your life. You know, they had a lot of success. I was able to stay out of sleep with them. One of the boys had in different weapons. They kind of still get the victories. And I was, yeah, you continue to do better jobs doing it here. Why are you keeping the conversation the process been like post-game? Getting on the same page with Kyler. You guys exchange text or, you guys in the film? Yeah, filming them, definitely. Kind of asking what did I see there.
Kind of go over and play. That's how I get them when I saw, and kind of different feedback there. Change words. Mark, if I get it, we're asking questions about the previous game. Are you the type of guy to let a game like that winger or how do you flush it? You got to move on. Got to move on. It's a long season. Got like 16 more of them. Hopefully, no, I can stay healthy throughout the year and just continue building to get better each week. You guys did so much work throughout the off season to get on the same page. How different is it when you get into that regular season? Yeah, it's totally different. You can do a lot of things, you know, inserts and shorts, and then once you go out there, put practice and get pads on, you do like the joint practice video for the colds, but there's nothing like actually going out there and live action. And really trying to get the same case. I think that relationship will continue to develop and we'll get better. Is that it? It's just a matter of roughs then. As much as anything. Yeah, definitely, definitely. Like I said, I was kind of my first live action together. So, continue with me. What are your early impressions on the time on the field together and what's your impressions?
What's how? Yeah, but now I would say I have a deaf serve respect, no JG's call or preseason. And I would say be all feel really healthy. That's kind of the most important thing. I would say that's a lot of healthy going forward. So, um, that's it. I can say I can say. What are your early impressions of the Rams? What do you think of the Rams? Yeah, I mean, they're a good team. They're a good physical team. And I think that's what it is. Kind of a little different to Buffalo, come over to a little match coverage. So, I'm excited to build this. Personally, when the belts take different one and one, I would turn this one into a new one today. I'm just getting open to the belt. Wasn't many of them. Wasn't many of them. So, I thought I needed to... I wish we'd think game versus just playing. You know, not get any preseason game action. I think it was three season. Definitely, definitely thinking a lot out there. And, um, you know, I think I'd come with reps. And, um, thinking less and just going out there and playing definitely coming reps. And, it's something you ought to get better at, but, um, I think definitely I was thinking a lot out there. Is there anything you can do to bring that up,
that's for coverage? Anything you can do to get the past? You're going to fix that a lot, obviously. Yeah, I mean, you just got to team. Get open for, you know, yourself, make it so yourself available. The one you're going to ball does anyway and making a play. This, the beef is just taking you away. That means for the guys that aren't having chance to get open. So, that's how it kind of happened. Look at it. It's no longer a season and offense, that's the best thing for us. They're continuity with Tyler. Is this something that comes pretty quickly? I mean, or something like that? Hopefully sooner or later, I think. I'll look into you to see. I don't think we're in a bad place right now at all. Obviously, I don't really think that. But just a live episode will continue to grow and show. It's a lot about life. It's a lot of things. It's a lot of things. It's a lot of things. It's a lot of things. It's a lot of things. It's a lot of things. It's a lot of things. It's a lot of things. It's a lot of things.
It's a lot of things. It's a lot of things. For the heads of C running Title, all experience, everything. I know, people have a lot of things to do on the national league, and I don't play gold anymore. I see their protagonists, my favorite finance agents. I have an important part in the ad. I have an important part myself. area team level and I don't need the lead Meryeah's ace. You canmesis. As a hungarian play patrol, you can denganist andью. You can. If they don't play such awesome literary level or listening to me in a Football command ... Every set in the F Undo service knows what to do. Everything gives rise to someone who can speak a word, transition a little bit to the inside. Nick was far-sounding. Now I'm actually trying to catch me again. And often, Kepers is not always press at the line. So it's like, now I'm able to move my feet, move my hands, see what I gotta do. Just in case I gotta go back in corner, I can plan off now. I'm very confident out there. Do you think that Nick was an actual fifth of you or have you had to kind of convince yourself to transition to that? I mean, I feel like his natural feel for me because I feel like me individually, I'm a fast learner, a fast learner. Coach has helped us learn fast.
Because they're always on this about the techniques and stuff. So you write down, you pick up all the things and then when we get out here, they coach us to the techniques. So we used to go out there and play fast spot. And it would be like, reverse utility, you're able to go out there and just compete. Is that where you kind of stuck this spring or have you been kind of out there? So I've really been stuck there this spring a little bit, whenever you get into other things, I just bounce out there every once in a while, just like have fun. See if I still got it every once in a while. So it's as good as going through the compete at most spots. You mentioned the technique. What technique tips and things that you had to pick up and learn from Coach Walton from the beginning of the year? I mean, this is always like, he always comes up, preaches the ass, feet, hands, like see it, you see it, move your feet, and then get your hands on the mat. So it's like, when you get like, when you out there, you able to like, just process like the way the receiver comes off the ball, looking at the hips and seeing like the way you're moving, are you able to pick up like the row concepts you can get out of that. So it's being like, under Coach Walton, me as a player and just like him breaking out football
to you like one on one, it's very beneficial. What was the hardest part of making that transition from outside inside? I really say like, you know, you've got to cover two, you've got to cover three, you've got to cover one, it's easy, but then you got nickel. Not so many responsibilities you got to see like the row concepts, you've got to be able to process like dying those rows faster than what you got to do in a corner and just be able to like, everything's quid, like a transition, you've got to like, you've got to move fast, you've got to just learn to move fast. It's like game recognition, where you think maybe from the most since you got it. How did you got to go to the hospital? I would definitely say, I would definitely say, because as far as you get to like college, it's a little bit different, like high school, we don't got to worry about things like that. When I when you get to like college in school, like this, like your recognition of plays, like you know your jobs, the way like the coverage is supposed to be played, understand all your teammates or pluses you have in field. It's like it is easy. What have your product been? Oh, it's so far. He's very talented. He's a great dude, he's a humble guy,
great teammate, very supportive, as I got actually the one around because you can feed off him energy because you can see like, when you make a place, he's like, he like IDB, it's like IDB to a partner, so he's like, when you get off there with guys like that, with good energy, it makes you play a little bit harder. And it's like, when you make a place, it's out there, it's like, it's helping you, it's being out there with him, he's a good player. Lundbelts had first question, and four kids come to Ohio State obviously over the last few years, so it's probably serious. Now, what is it about Lundbel that gets you through any play at Ohio State? That's a big question, I know. The Lundbelts are such a performance, but because you have so many kids come out of Lundbel and just play at leagues, elite schools, and then like, like, track's a big part of it because I mean, actually, Lundbel, everybody got to run track, like it's mandatory, you don't really get a choice. So you're able to just like get out here and like know how to compete, and then like, G, like, getting bills that mental toughness into you, so it's like, have you like, I've heard now,
you got to be mentally tough because life's not gonna be easy, so it's like being out here, being able to compete, and when you down, just pick yourself back up, that's what he is down to being, that's what he is down to. Good. Play here forever, you know, I mean, talk about his plans. So, you know, you wish transitions, like, one of those fairy tales, like, tear-tying house. You know what I mean? But, again, either way, you know, we talk about it, you know, that's the talk goes, you know, but obviously, you know, you see, he's happy. And one of his supporters, yeah, I think everybody leads, and they're all like, you know, not everybody's the, right, guys, come around, let's go, like, that's not everybody, right? Like, I think for me, that's me specifically on Game Day, with the O-line, after we do a little more, like, that's my like, well, I'm dead, like, that's my like, big vocal time, I feel like,
I've talked on about this, you know, just recently, talking about how what I want to do for the homeless, I want to bring that home energy, the Hebrew, right? So last year, of course, I'm sure you're doing it for years, but for the year when I spent my own, he brought a lot of energy, excitement, and happiness in the room, which is his natural energy, to where I always have to focus on me, you know, I didn't have to make sure of the other guys, you know, to feel some type of way when they came in here, because hump brought that, and I'm a hump's not here, but I saw a winged different room, I want to be that guy to make sure I'm supposed to amptical to practice, everybody's, I want to take a new team on period, you know, it's a low day, or something, you know, it's a different thing, but like, I want to make it feel like hump's home, like, yeah, pairs, the trip. I want to bring that, because that's what we at hump did in each other, we had each other, and it's like, dude, it's like, you walk, we're lit.
So I want to do that, I want to bring that energy on me, bring more guys. You know, should do that, you know? Yeah. I want to do that from day one, you know, I kind of, I want to do that from day one, just talking to them, and obviously it's that time I spent in the offices of the Ford OTA started, just being in my self-justing about what the room needs, you know, because I know I do do well as one of the leaders, you know, my offense is that we need a guy like that is going to make sure the O-line is picked up, ready to go every day, I want to help account for little things on having to practice people and saying anything, and how I believe maybe different than somebody else maybe, you know, like, that practiced, at least like the legal positivity, you know, I mean so, but he, the energy I would be on, just like, I'd have to be on, so I was kind of, I wanted to be going on,
living my whole life, I want to get out of bed, team captain, like specifically, and I felt I wasn't captain at high school, wasn't a captain at college, but I want to make a joke, I was in high school, so I feel like I'm not going to get a captain to like his bed, I felt. Yeah. But that would be awesome, you know, but, you know, the happens, I'd be great, but not either way, I want to assume a role as a captain from the perspective of guys onto the visual world and get back in that way. Yeah, I mean, I can't say that, I mean, I guess the biggest thing is that, I felt like it has felt like how it used to be in the past, but it didn't take just the first LTAs, it took training left and right, once this season ended, because I know what was going to be the champion, so it took a lot of, yeah, grips, just to give back to feeling like myself, for the LTAs,
and now, over the course of the week, but now, like today specifically, just changing some small things with my feet, that visit, talking about the long coach, about some things that I'm doing, my feet to get to, to sell my traditional finger that I love to sit on, and I thought I felt great already, but I'm okay, I felt even better, starting to work more excited tomorrow, now I'm getting my feet back, and how I like the right side, and I'm left side, so long side. I mean, obviously I feel like, in the league, whether I left the right, they're still going against Premier Guy, so obviously, you have high expectations for the left and right tackle, but there's definitely, like, the level of energy, and like the expectation definitely take the human side, because now, can I get blind side? That's the, that's the tackle world, you know, so, yeah, I would say, in terms of communication as far as, even outside of the facility, and stuff like that, I didn't really create that, but in tackle quarterback,
Bonnie, the mom, the field, I think has been something that's, even the cool, I mean, I got the text one day, because I had, like, you put it left, I was like, you know, yeah, I've been training both, I've been training both, you know, I asked after the season, and they're like, honestly, you know, we'll talk to you some play and season, and I just got a text one, having what happens with the free agency, then, so I was like, you know, what, I had an old season right tackle, so if I get the word, I'm going, I'm standing right tackle, and I'll do what I did before I'm built on that, but I was like, I might as well as train a left tackle now, as if I'm going to be left tackle, and I'd rather do that, train a right tackle for the color day, and do a left tackle on my pool. I'd switch my feet. You know what I mean? So I'm like, let me just prepare an advance. I'll say, yeah, let's go. You know, I think occasionally, on third down, there'd be a lot of twists, I was just not like, it's a automatic or the car. And I think that was my mindset for like the first half of the season,
like I didn't have to go into game with some problems, like, oh my gosh, they did that. I kind of figured, okay, like, this is the type of rush I'm going to get. This is how this guy usually rushes. If I get the vibe, this is how he ends like the rush, you know, tackles that, you know, first year guys, you got the premium patch on. Already, you know, what it was going to be. Already, you know, we'll be every stunt. And honestly, just knowing that's kind of an advantage to, so you're not, you're not, oh, the problem twists my sight. It was never air-dough, but it kind of normalized like three plays in a row. Two minutes, I knew that. It wasn't working, I didn't mean so. You know what I mean? I'm watching more everybody else, and you rarely, you know, it goes out there occasionally. I'm like, I'm like, you know, he's going to pick me. You know what I mean? So, that effect, it's kind of, it's also kind of an advantage of what, but it's also exciting, okay, I'm going to give the hardest look. You know, those are real, real reps, you know, the day, some, really out on our way to kind of process.
And I was like, hey, when I tell me, let me know about my mom's going to train it. I was trying to all left. So TAs, I guess if I didn't hear anything about TAs, I would came in like, so, you know what I mean? That's what I mean. Cause just like, I'm cool with training both, I would've been cool with training both continually, but I feel like anybody, any position will be like, okay, like you want as soon as possible, you give your feet kind of subtle in, your hips subtle in, your hands, subtle in, certain kind of that. We've been hard of it, you work both very hard to you. No, no, no. But I, very definitely, but in terms of the development, it was definitely a lot faster to stay on one side. But I think having that, the weeks that we had the transitional seasons over, I'm like, it was fun. You know, it looked good, I'm trying to get up, put up my front hand and weak things at a time right now, but when it comes back,
I'm gonna show them to you on the house. I've got a house, not too far from home. So I told them, I got that house, like I could yell outside. DJ. You know what I mean? So, yeah. Communication with the team. You know, I was communicating with guys left and right, and you know, front office, coaches, teammates, and all I care about is how I am with my teammates. I don't want them to ever think I don't care about them, or how I'm not in it. And you know, you can say whatever you want about me, besides that, but I always dedicate anything, I can't do that. And I don't want that to every question. I think I said that it felt like sometimes you were holding up somewhere watching film, you texted him, you say, hey, you missed this, or you want to tweak that? Well, like the first day, he was batting all of Russ's passes. So I had to let him know. You know, you got to take advantage of that. You got to make sure guys are, know that you still care,
and you still want to be a part of this. You know, just watching practice. There's a couple of little things we're doing different, whether I'm communicating with Dumbar, or other people, you know, Toby. So you're also talking with him, and you give him pointers during the off season, just a constant communication. How do you see who grows a person, you know, as far as how he's approaching things, how he getting ready for this season versus his review? You know, I think the thing with Keanu is, he's more comfortable, you know. It's not his first time around the track. It's actually like he can catch his feet under him. You know, I always think when you're in a rookie season, you're going from bowl game, I don't even know what's constantly playing a bowl game. Sorry, Wisconsin, I don't even know, but, you know, personally, I just think when you go from bowl game to training for the combine, to, you know, rookie minicamp, OTAs, the, you know, minicamp, I mean, to training camp, the regular season, you really don't get a time to really catch yourself.
You know, you understand it's a playbook now. You can be more vocal, you know, and I think with my absence, the other guys' absence, you know, you need guys like that to step up and be ready for those opportunities. So the surgery you had in Yaw City, you know, the same you had during the season, you know, what was it? Just tightened down everything, you know, on my left side, because I was over-competing a little bit. But, you know, it was, it wasn't anything that lingers, you know. I'll say this, a growing's not like an ACL, it's not like anything's ever gonna get affected again. And, you know, you know, feeling good, able to do everything squat and heavy, with power and speed. So, you know, it feels good to get after a lot. What do you think of what the team was able to accomplish in our season in terms of bringing guys like wrestling and things around these days? You know, I think they're all good acquisitions, but, you know, you never want to be known as a paper champ. So, I can't win the off season. I think the work gets done out here on the field,
gets done in the classroom, it gets done training, you know, and then you see where you're at in training camp, and then you build on that. You know, I think we got the right guys in the building. It's just about putting a completion amount of food. Can you have technical reasons to separate the business part of the game in the actual football tournament? Oh, you know, you always want to, you always have to treat it like a business because, you know, one day it's gonna end, and that's been a job. It's not like in college where, you know, you got four years guarantee. Well, now you even know within IEL and on the scrap, transfer portal, portal, but, you know, you have to, I still have love for this game, and I still work my tail off, and I still put everything into it, and that's not gonna change, but you have to know what you bring to the team and what your value is.
Can't be only to be able to be out there with your teammates today emotionally. Great, you know, we got a new training staff and still learning the warm up, a little different, but, you know, I love it. You know, just getting after it, learning new guys, going through the same drills I've been doing by myself. I actually like having more people around because, like, kind of go stir crazy. When it's just you and another guy, you're like, damn, I gotta go back up for another rep already. So, you know, it's nice to be up here and get a chance to be with my guys. Can we confident, if they will get down with your emotion? Oh, I'm gonna try to remain pretty neutral, because I don't wanna be to either way. Either way, all I know is I wanna be here, but we'll see what happens. It's my last year here. I've had a great career here, but I look forward to playing, actually.
When that second surgery you said at this time was on the left side was the first time around on the right side? Right side during the season, left side, and that was just tightening down my core muscle. It wasn't the same as my ad doctor. You know, you can ask Dr. Bradley, Dr. Zuckerbron, who I think the surgery as well. If anything, it's gonna help me and it'll make me a lot stronger from here on up. Can you say you were training with another guy who have you come to mind? Tyson, I've been training with him for the last eight years. We've always trained together. We gotta train her up north, shout out Cole Haley, he's my guy. I've been training to train to Heath Miller, Breck Heasle, multitude of guys that I'll respect. And we've just been getting after him. Can we get very few guys historically, 35, they're paid, big contracts, and who that's held against you? I think there's not a lot of history behind it,
but for me, I look at as, I'm not looking to be like anybody else. My game is different from everybody else, and I sleep. I like to think I can play the run in the past, and that's where I'm different. I remember last year Mike T. just brought to my attention. The thing that's really cool is you watch powerlisters. My game's built on power and technique, and those guys go into the 40s. And so that's what kind of research I'm doing behind the scenes, but we'll see what happens. There's not a lot of history, but I'm here to make history. And I'm here to win another Super Bowl there, and have a great season. Do you have a set goal for yourself, or how many years you want to play in the NFL? Or do you just take things here right here? You know, it was tough answering that question right after the season. I will say this guys, I can't keep answering that question right after the season.
That is not fair to the season that's not fair to my family. But in my mind, I got three years. And I want to maximize them. I want to play at a high level, and I want to go deep into playoffs. And we got a good team, and I'm going to do my part to be ready for all those situations. You've played on the practice team when you were in fourth of a trophy. Is it possible you only could be able to fold in and then, unfortunately, the issue is... I have not even thought that far. I've taken a day. My day. I told my agent, and we talked about it. We were cool coming out here. I'll be here for many. And then, I'll be the per training team. I don't know what the work entails, but when we get there, we'll cross that bridge. Why didn't you go or remain a steeler for years? You know, there was a conversation between me, Omar, and MIT. And there are certain guys there are one helmet guys.
You know, and I want to be one of those one helmet guys. And, you know, there's a hunger and desire there. But that doesn't mean just hanging it up and calling it a career. To me, I think, you know, I got more bullets to fire, and I'm excited to do that. What's the meaning? Last one. The UN and Russell Lewis are going to be out there with multiple men, what's a pain in the ear patch, though? I saw Russ's on social media. But I have an idea to see it. I like the surprise happens when it happens. But, you know, it's cool to have another walk-to-paying man-year winner. You know, I think it's an honor to be there. And I'll say one thing. I won't be here. I'm just telling you guys, so it's not a big deal. I won't be here because I have to do a walk-to-paying man-year thing on Thursday. So, it's not like I'm skipping. Sorry. But, you know, it's an honor to be with Russ.
And, you know, it's an honor of doing things in the community. You know, doing great work. And, you know, the cool thing is, as much as we get honored and nominated for these things, the work doesn't stop. And I can see that was Russ's foundation. You know, we had an event for our foundation. And my mom was quick to tell Russ, hey, we need the partners around. And I was like, mom, let's just enjoy the event. But, you know, it's really cool to be a part of a lead group. All right. Thank you. Thank you. I always think good. I mean, just trying to, it's just a different way of play, different terminology, different, to hold different schemes. So, just learning how they want things done compared to how you used to do things is really the... What's it like being in that tight end room? Everybody's got different skills to see. Everybody's different, but you all do some of the same things. Right. Yeah, no, it's a great room. A lot of really good guys have grown really close with a lot of those guys. So, everybody helps each other.
A really nice learner from Dalton, breadin' those guys. I mean, Dalton's done it for a really long time. So, he helps me a lot with things that really aren't coachable things, you know what I mean? I mentioned what happened to family at the game, but what about working out here at this high school? Are you still in Ohio? I feel good. And I don't know how your high school is like this. Man, it's the best way to go to a different name. I went to Lexington, how it's about the eighth of the size of this place. Yeah, this is not like my high school, but this is a healthy place. But it's super cool to be home and just be back and give you a little sense of comfort, I guess for me, especially being away for as long as I've been. So, I've been in the car war around the city, and you've been there, you've seen a bunch of black-eyed fans that have wanted to get your autographs and a picture of you probably been here. I don't get... I don't go out of the hole. I actually went home yesterday. I went back to the farm for a little bit, which was great for a couple of days. He did all my family and stuff and see my grandparents and everything. So, it was good. But I really haven't been out enough to know, so I try and keep her inside. Yeah. I think it was a good question. Yeah. What do you think you could play in that really show-based and self-promote?
That's a good question. I don't think that's... For me, I'm just trying to give. I mean, every time I think you can be, you can play this game for 50 years, and there's always going to be something you leave to feel with. Like, God, I wish I would have been better in that area. I wish I would have been better in some other area. You know what I mean? Like, it's never going to be. This is absolutely perfect. So, like, to me, that's... Right now, the hardest part of this is just mental toughness and stuff of all. I mean, physical toughness. I mean, you either have it or you don't, in my opinion. So, I mean, I've always felt like I was kind of bred in that area with things, and that's just kind of what happens naturally. So, just play after play. That's kind of how we roll it. Okay. Thank you, gentlemen. Thank you guys. We are now. That was growing immensely. I mean, KLAP makes a lot of checks. Latham makes a lot of checks. I listen to them. Whatever they need, if I need to cover somebody out, I'll go cover anybody. If they need me to do run support, I'll do run support. And it's really what KLAP does, what we do, and Latham. It just goes back to Coach G's preparation, and everyone's preparation to give us more flexibility, and it doesn't matter who's in those positions,
and we can all play every position, whether it's covering somebody or running and tackling. Did you feel like that was the case before the Oregon game? You're saying what I'm saying? I mean, is it something that's been added to just, you know, rely on a little bit more, go ahead. Yeah, it did. I was probably playing a Brasco game, a Megan and more safety reps, and we had a five week to prepare, so I really learned to play, but a lot more. Even though I knew the play, but I learned a lot more. In debt, you know, so really just after the Oregon game, it helped me a lot to go back to safety, go to NICU everywhere. You guys had a lot of issues of giving up big plays in the passing game of the first game against Oregon. What do you feel you guys need to do better this time around to make sure that doesn't happen? Just the same mindset. We got to challenge these receivers. You know, every dog has their day. Maybe some people didn't have their day that game, but we'll look out there and hopefully change the narrative,
and we still play with the same confidence, same technique, and, yeah. Bill Rebenowitz, what is this batch? And Denzel obviously had a tough game, and that one, what have you seen from him and how he's responded? Do you get a sense of, from him, how he's for this rematch? Oh, yeah, he's super stoked for this rematch. His preparation has been very good. He's always been preparing, you know, it didn't go the way he wanted to go that game, but he just always had his confidence, and we're going to see a big game out of him this week. And, you know, I know you guys wanted to play them in anapolis, but the fact that you get to play them at the Rose Bowl, I mean, get a second chance, and people have said, you don't get that very often. How determined are you guys to take advantage of it? We're super, super determined. We watched film. I mean, we've watched a lot of film. The first time we played them, now we've got another six games that they played up film to watch. And it's just, they've grown a lot as a team. Same as us. We've grown a lot. We're not the same team.
We were when we played them week one, or weeks six or whatever, but now we're out there and going to play fast, physical, and everything like that. All right, Jordan, we're going to jump to the Zoom question here from Joey Coffin. Columbus Dispatch. Well, my bad, not too Joey. Cameron T. Robinson, the athletic. Hey, Jordan, you've moved around a lot in the second day in your career, and now kind of getting some many more safety reps. What is it like at this point when Walt or Coach Knowles comes to you and asks you to do some else, and just how much can you lean on the experiences you've had and moving around when you're trying to learn something new in the middle of season? It means a lot. We always talk about, and this is if it's being on selfish, whether that's making plays or not making plays, or doing your job so another person can make plays. That's kind of what we pride ourselves on. And it's just fun, me moving around different positions. I'm always up for a new challenge, and a lot of people in the country can't do that.
I just hold myself to that standard where I can play any position and excel at it. Okay, and everybody else needs a question. Let me know, but otherwise we can go to Austin Moore, the podcast. Jordan, when you were talking about watching film, Oregon, which one do you think is more valuable to you watching that against yourself, seven games ago, even if you've changed, or the ensuing six games for Oregon, which one do you put more stock in? Kind of both. For me, I kind of watched what I did, things I did well, things I didn't do too well against them. And that life of scheme has changed. Some players have been out those stretch of games, so I really watched the past, and we played, and I know they're going to go back to some of the stuff that they liked, of course, and different games like Penn State, maybe Illinois, they run a lot of men, so just watching stuff like that. Every game matters, so yeah. Jordan, thank you very much.
Thank you all. Shoot ourselves a foot high on the hat and the run game, how I'm in the passing game, and really just stop getting it wrong way. He's a C.J. first couple of weeks. It looks like you've been having more comfortable with off-skritt plays and taking more risks, which you say that's something that's overdoing. This year for you. I mean, yes and no. I don't choose a run. I run what I have to. I feel like I am agile and I can't get out, but I definitely try to read the defense to get my guys the ball, because they're usually open every time. So it's just up to the pocket, and navigate and that, try to make my whole line arrive also. If I have to, extend the play. C.J. you guys started going to last year's night in Tuto. How much different do things feel this year? And now you've had the whole season after your battle, would it be learned, or would you feel like you guys are going to win? Oh, it's too, oh, it's a lot worse than Tuto. So, you know, I'm definitely grateful.
I'm definitely, you know, blessed we playing this great game. But, you know, it's definitely a lot of things we can clean up. I think around the league, you can see that, though, you know what I mean? A lot of sloppy ball, you know, some teams playing better than others, but I definitely know that, you know, section 4 was not what we put on the field today, but, you know, at least in the second half, and would definitely be better, for sure. You and Nico connected on a couple of scrambled drill style plays. Is that something you guys work on actively? Is that a focus of yours? No, it's just two guys out there making plays. You know, we have a drill that we do at practice, that, you know, it does help those things. But, you know, trying to just be two guys, be dynamic players. You're born in that way, kind of mind-mouth. So, it's deep and good. Yeah, for sure. I think, I mean, Nico, we've always had a good relationship and always, you know, you're at each other well on the field, but I think even now, you know, we'll take the next steps. And you can see, you know, staff getting involved more, tank getting involved, dulled and breath. We're just trying to spread it around, you know, and we have so many dynamic players.
So, you know, it's a good problem to have. You're obviously, you know, all too prepared to the things in that nature. How do you balance, you guys got the win, but you said you guys have been put on Texans football. How do you kind of balance one and correct all the mistakes but also, you know, celebrating the win that you guys just had today? It's football. It's hard to win the NFL. I'm happy. Of course, I'm not satisfied. I'll never be satisfied. There's always things that you can point out. We're not going to let one half of football make us put our heads and we're going to stay confident. We're going to stay taking shots. We're going to stay, you know, betting on us. So, I definitely, you know, understand, you know, we need to be better, but, you know, like you said, winning is number one. So, we won and now it's time to move on and get better. Can you tell a little bit about what Paními has meant to the team over these past two weeks? And as a quarterback, as an offense, does having a kicker that can hit for long range like that can just see if you guys
have a little bit of extra confidence, you know, once you get over it, if you got one? Yeah, any guys in his aims, man, I'm super happy and proud of him. And he broke a record today or something like that. So, you know, we definitely need him. You know, all points are big points. And I definitely think like the preparation and just who he is at practice, you know, you know that he's going to knock it down just because how hard he is on himself during practice. And, you know, it was a great job, especially teams today blocking it. Also, you know, Paní, Tommy doing his job as well. So, you know, it takes three phases for one or one for one game. Here you go. See the e-mission. All right, here's a little get those numbers. I promised it was not long. 4602, now through 17 career games. Remember, it's the couple a year ago due to that concussion. So, reaches his full quote unquote first season, at least from a game standpoint here in week two of year two.
It's proud when we're looking up at a few. It's different for me. I'm really like a ball player type of guy. Not very, not the most how going and both good, but not talking. I realize that people listen. Just taking more of that type of aspect into my game, just making me more complete as a football player. I'm willing to do something. How have you seen maybe change a little bit with Coach Hardline in a bit of a different role? Maybe whether it be other coaches, coach Jordan or players stepping up time to take that role? I want to say a change much. He's still a super involved. He always tries to stay engaged with us guys. I mean, he's the Oc now and he's more skimmed, schematic and everything now, but he's still keeping
that relationship strong with us and still really in there with the Civic going in. Shout out to Coach Jordan as long. Stepping up, taking a big little Coach Jordan. He's been a huge factor in our lunch inside of the end here. So, it's a big process because Jordan has to do that. How do you feel like the spring's gone for you? Obviously you've done this now. Just what have you taken from us? I'm extremely comfortable, super confident in my ability to do what I do. Just building that trust with my quarterback, just pretty much when I came in when I do. Just let them know that they got to revive the offense and the third chain next time it's on the field. And you know, just establishing that, showing the, like I said, really to show my young guys, I found a day when I was in for a tournament and what's the interpretation of something. It wasn't often that real value last year, but he did caught me. Yeah, obviously trusted you in a certain extent. How long have you felt yourself building that trust in Lincoln? I think it's been good. Just being more vocal with those guys as well, me and Lil, are very vocal, even in practice a lot of times.
Just things they go my way in the game, but even in practice a lot. Yeah, take care. I'm a very comfortable little, more vocal guy, but working in that honor of our quarterback's now, I'm going to do a better job, just building so big sea liars and taking our feedback, not for its criticisms, but just because we love it and we love it. So just doing that and just keep growing on that all the way to far and all the interesting things that's just taken. You are doing some more outside for cheer, stuff as well? Yeah, I've been more, the more years you get under your belt, the more experience you get. I start knowing this offense more and more and not just your position or what you're doing, like everybody's job, what you're doing, how you're doing and why you're doing it. So I mean, yeah, I've been wrapping the outside ZXH anywhere in Coach Hanlon, I'm using it to just really be that guy and go make a play on it. What's the biggest difference for you between outside and outside? The pace. The route concept, you can kind of get the pace you can play within the slides more from this game in the slide. Something I got very comfortable with.
Just the ways you can attack the defense, I think. Just you know, conceptually and also just, you're placed down. But I mean, just doing both and just making me a better guy for the NFL. And that's what Coach Hanlon plays the time. Producing on the NFL talent and producing NFL guys. I'm feeling very comfortable with that. Do you have to have a different mindset as a Swap receiver? That's what's going on. Absolutely. I think it's more thinking. I think it's more of a, you have to have a understanding of the game a lot. In the slide, you've got to have a feel. This is natural. I feel like it's more natural to position. And on the outside, it's just more, you know, get different things and see different coverage and see more. You see different player types and corners and nickel bats and safeties more in the slide. So just seeing how you can attack, knowing your person now and how you can attack some people. That's how I say the biggest difference. Do you have that more courage? You have that more courage in the slide? Oh, yeah, absolutely. Especially like being myself in the slide faster. I'm a skinnier guy than when I put hands on and want to get physical with you.
But you just got to match that and just let them know that you there too. So you as did a ballast question, whatever gets you on to, regardless inside, outside, whatever has to be fun? I'm just willing to make plays and show one one of the best receivers in America. So that's in the outside, that's in the inside. Whatever Coach Hanlon and his team needs me help us win and show them one of the best receivers in America. I'd like to make you feel certain. At that time, you go back to zero, zero. They scored, they scored a thing in a half. We knew they got the ball back. The defense wasn't quite happy that they gave that touchdown to end. And we knew they'd get in the ball back coming out. But we was excited because we knew the job wasn't doing it. Bill Rebellion, Columbus, this way. You were a five star guy and that coming up. All these guys in the room almost were five star guys. And then there's Jeremiah. Does he like all you guys in the room? I mean, I'm not sure it's probably something you got to ask him.
But Jeremiah has played with a lot of great guys throughout his career. He's seen all the talent you can see in the world. But I don't know if he's ever in all. Oh, yeah. I mean, I'm not surprised at anything he does now. I've seen him since we were nine years old. So anything he does, anyone hand-kept, I've seen, I'm not surprised at anything he does. When he was nine, did you know this is something special we even met? Any of that nine? Oh, yeah. I mean, coaches were coming up to us complaining that we weren't nine years old. Like, can we get their IDs and stuff like that? So I mean, there's definitely some footage that we got to go find. But the place we used to make when we were younger and just to see where he is now is amazing. And it seems very unaffected by all of the starter. Yeah. How did that happen? I think how he was raised. He's very level-headed. He knows his goals and what he wants to get done in life. And this is just one step away from him.
Can I throw a back to Texas for a couple of questions on Zoom? Scotty? Yes, sir. We're going to start with Defon from Clean.com. Go ahead. Brandon, I want to go back to what you were talking about with Coach Day earlier. You know, whenever he talks about this team's success, he says all the credit goes through players. It seems like the players think that he deserves some of the credit. How big? How influential has he been during the turnaround you guys have had these last few weeks? He's been a huge man. Coming here after that team with Northwest, he knows heart breaking, of course. But we came in here. We had a leadership meeting and he was in here. I mean, and then we had a team meeting after that. Hearing the stuff he had to say and we had to say going back and forth, we just, we knew, we would have his back no matter what. I mean, there's a lot of stuff set about him and his family and stuff like that. But, hey, here we're a brotherhood and we're a family. And we just, we don't stand by him no matter what.
Our next question is going to come from Dan. Hope Dan go ahead. Brandon, I mean, I'm sure you came in here to Ohio State thinking you'd come in here. I mean, I'm sure you came in here to Ohio State thinking you'd probably be starting here in your second year. But it seems like you really embraced the growth process. Just what's kind of that process been like for you of kind of embracing your role this season and continuing to develop? Yeah. In life, things doesn't go the way you exactly planted too. And that just did happen. You know, things happened to Mecca last year that allowed him to come back. And that allowed me to learn more. And that's just how I see it. It makes me a better football player for the future. So, yeah, I mean, yeah, let's see it. Three more on Zoom. Next one's going to come from Stefan Means. Go ahead. Steven, but. Yeah, you're good. You're good. But Brandon, there are a lot of clips of you this year where you're super, super excited after a block.
And kind of showing your emotion there. What about blocking do you love so much as a receiver? Just being able to hit another guy with all my power, the hardest I can without any consequences. Except if you, except if you hold, of course, but yeah, just bringing that power. I mean, I heard some of the defensive guys telling me yesterday they were like, I hate to go against you. So knowing that from the defensive guys. So I know what the other defensive guys are thinking like, just keep bringing it so that they're not going to like it for four quarters. That's my mindset. Next question's going to come from Danny Davis. Danny, go ahead. Brandon, what are your impressions of these Texas defensive backs? Is it kind of what you've seen from them on, on, on, to them so far? Um, yeah, the last couple of days we watched them, um, they're fast team. Um, they don't give up many big plays down field. Um, they're aggressive, but I actually know some of the, the DBs they have at corner there.
I play with them. Well, I played with Mollie Muhammad at SFE. So I might know him a little bit. And um, they have a watching them. They're fast team. They're physical. But we just got to get the job. Not giving any Malik stories or any any. What is that? Giving any Malik stories or anything you remember about playing with them? Oh, um, yeah, but I'm not going to say them here. Yeah, what's this keep that? Our final question's going to come from Kurt Bulls. Kurt, go ahead. Hi, Brandon. Uh, one of the issues Texas has had the second half of the year is finishing. And what if you can speak to, uh, and they had a trouble obviously in the peach bowl, you know, blue of 16 point league? And you talk about finishing and having a killer instinct and you guys obviously seem to have that now. Yeah, um, I think that started started in, um, the offseason training at Fall camp.
We always say go plus two. That's if you're doing a 10 yard pro shuttle to, uh, you have to go plus two throughout the line. And that's just finishing it was well. And then fall camp, we had these long two and a half hour practices or whatnot. And then we came out and we had to do these, um, finishers. We called them ask for games late in the year like this. And we, um, I think Coach Day has a great, did a great job preparing all of us for these moments. And yeah, we just were ready to go. We have time for just a couple more questions and clumpets so we can wrap up with our other two guys. Bill Landis, Kings of the North. Randy, um, maybe on the second touchdown run. It seemed like you took two players out of the play first with your release and then with the guy you actually blocked. Is that, is that how it's designed? Or is it just lucky to get the guy decided to take off inside of the release? Um, it's actually designed for me to block the safety and lead, uh, the corner one on one with the running back. Um, but I was surprised. Like the corner I see came in so far.
Am I at least I think he thought it was a pass. Um, but I think he was the edge of the defense. If you go watch that play, but I don't know, I, I don't really know why he came in so far, but it helped out for us and I made my block interior score. Are there any lessons there for, for like, even a young receiver watching that, that even if you know him to play, you're not getting the ball or you're, you're intended to block, but you, you release has to be, at all point, like as if you're going to go pitch pass. Yeah, definitely. Um, every little detail matters and then type of plays. We were in a red zone there. So we say every yard matters. It's two yards. Um, so the block I made is just a testament to Kyle. Coach Hartline prepped, prepped me throughout the week to make that block. So yeah. And final question. Joy Conference, Columbus Dispatch. Brandon Will and then there's been some of the ball deep well lately. Um, some of the special, the way you guys have opened games. What do you think is this quick for you guys and for him and watching those plays? Um, a lot more confidence. I say throughout the year, um, we were always there as offense.
We had, we didn't know, we didn't quite know our identity. And now slowly but surely I think we found that and we're going to keep on rolling. And um, he's made some great throws and yeah. I'm sorry, Brandon. I do have one more steep. How do you do the 21st seven sports? Um, Brandon, there's been opportunities for you to play a huge role on offense. And you know, the number of plays you playing games can differ from one week to the next. But the opportunity is coming sooner rather than later for you to be in every down player. Just what are the things you need to do in your game to take it to where it is now to be in every downed guy? Um, I think there's a lot of things I could work on in my game. I would say continuing to be football smart by IQ. just knowing what the defense is going to do before they do it. About routes, always can get better. My hands always can get better staying on the jugging machine. Work ethic, keep on top of it. Don't get satisfied with anything I do. And don't get too big, don't get too low.
Don't get too high, don't get too low. That's what they say. You feel like a guy that the people follow, it seems like. In your mind, even the second you're guy, that you're kind of working toward being kind of a leadership type guy. I got to have guys that will take that role. Yeah, it's a great feeling, of course. The guys are watching what you do and listening to what you do. But I just feel like we do that with a lot of players here and not just myself. But the leadership we have on this team is like no other. And that's why we got so far, I think. Brandon, thank you very much. Not knowing anything but to go hard and put his head down. I'm super, super proud of Will. And I think we can't feed off each other. You know, he was a lowly or under recruited guy out of high school. So he always knows this is to go hard and what that looks like. So I'm proud of him. What do you think Max is better at school? A lot of skill. I mean, the guy, he fits the room, personality wise. Johnny would tell you that. He's fun to be around.
He's an outstanding ground runner. And he wants to get better. He's hungry. So he's a great addition. We have a lot of people from the outside. We see a new guy comes in. We guys have two or five guys who feel like they can get reps to. Maybe some people want to talk to some of these guys. Why do you guys say, why is this group so deep and state even though you guys brought in another guy? Yeah, I mean, I think it's just a testament to how strong his brotherhood is. When a coach told us that we were bringing him in bags, I just thought it was a great opportunity for me. I can worship stuff. He's a great player. And I already have the Bsler stuff in me and Will. I think now we have some really good guys in the room. We just say fresh. It was a lot of fun. I can try there and ultimately become the best players we can be. I think it was a late time. We saw that. Yeah, I saw that. It was late. I'm sure you're not watching for these offense when you guys came already. But how quick did you realize that this guy's legit? You see the numbers. You see the number one. You realize that this guy is real good. But when I met him the first day, he was a class act.
And for me, I think character is a big thing. I had a really medical football player and as I have good character. And I met him the first day I knew that he was a hard worker. He came in here and was grinding. And you know, it's showing right now in the field. It's going great. Do you have to do it? Do you get better at the surface? Yeah, top side. Yeah, I mean, I'm not really focused on specific areas. I was going to become a more polished outrunner. And they get better at blocking and they get better at the past protection. So I really want to work on everything, man, hopefully. You know, to get all of this together. I think I have a really good year. Because it feels good to have the only touchdown catch from one of the quarterbacks. Yeah, tools. Yeah, that was cool. That was a cool moment to have with them. How's that been working with Jordan and William and Sir Thorne? You guys were so close with William. Yeah, it's great. I remember when Lincoln first got here, I was grabbing him out to the field and throwing with me.
So, me and Lincoln got way back. And I'm 41st got here. I love Julian. And even Tavy is coming in and he's impressed me. There's been a lot of talk about the quarterback. There's something in the leadership that Joe just wants to see. I mean, how are you seeing those three guys coming to marriage? You know, as leaders and he's at that role? Yeah, I think they, at first, were nowhere near as vocal as Will was. We're here, but I think they're really stepping up in that role. And it's really good to see. All right, thank you. Awesome, thanks guys. Thanks for the food. I mean, just how it was raised, I just know how to work. That's all I had to do. Just give him effort and just go on the stage today. I want to say this with full respect. When we see JJ and Sonny, it's like, that makes sense. When you're the third guy, were you surprised to be named? What puts you in that same category? Yeah, I was a little surprised. I kind of have feeling because I kind of like, I mean, I kind of could have guessed it.
But I just knew that I was one of my goal to toss him behind Buckeye. And I just couldn't work there with him. So what did you get in now? What did you mean? How did you take that? It was very special right after a text on a parents. And they really knew what it meant until the video came out and the question explained it to them. So then, absolutely, it's only a parents. Back then, when you played off, it was when you both then went on and games. Did you think you'd tell the difficulties of going back and forth? Not just like we were learning them, but actually having to play both of those five. Yeah, it's pretty difficult, especially during the game. You have to put the whole mind around. It's a lot easier in practice because it's not getting like several down. But like, going left and right in the game. It's pretty hard, but like in high school, it was every other player I was in back in the course with Triple-Auf. So I knew it. I was comfortable with it. And sometimes I just take a warm walk into the basketball and scream,
and say it to the player again. And give him one time so he can get into my head. He was bringing two bags of him in the corner. He was bringing it back to the corner. He was putting it off and he said he had a bag. I put it out of the corner. And then he said he had a bag. Yeah, so I got to set the example. And then my first two weeks here, I was teaching them. I don't know what they're expecting these players because I've seen some new players for them. And even new defense. I like technique two because I keep the same technique. But just helping them out because we need all of those. What do you like? When did you hear the idea of playing tackle kind of come about? About like Rath, the team that was going to go to bowling game, what did you win? How did everybody come about? It came close to springtime. They wanted to have, they just wanted to have a good five out there. And they want to play the best so they just won't make a choice. What do you have to do all of such a high-spot? They're awesome. They're great. A lot of eyes, it's awesome because everyone's watching something.
It's not like someone's only watching this place, so you know what's going on. We've got to feedback to see it. After the practice, we're all three off-world. It's awesome. They tell you everything. Because they know what's left side ahead with Coach Johnson and Coach Dickie's watching and watching the coach on the bowling field. So you know what's going on. How was the experience that you got at the big reps in the big games? All that helps. It really boosted my confidence. And I can lead the young guys too. I know it was going on because they really don't really miss this first time. So I like to be on the ball. My stuff is just that leadership. Resetility has also been mentioned a lot. It's been all on both sides of the ball playing in different spots. So you can elaborate on that. Yeah. Yeah, I can beat that question all the time. Can you just talk about the versatility that Coach Chase has been talking a lot about that on both sides of the ball? Can you guys in different spots be able to win? Yeah, so like, you all see it in last year.
We lost two stars. All maybe started. So like, really guys need to stepped up and like, go on your season. I didn't know I was going to be playing a start left guard. And I didn't really know I was going to be bouncing over the right. And what a Donnie knew is when we bounced out the tackle. So like, it really helps everyone. I think a lot of guys this season are playing multiple positions. And it's going to help us. But if you learn from Donnie and jog or sat in all that. Just like technique wise, they really helped me like, pretty snap stuff. And like, no one in my world's going to go as you guys. I can play some stuff. Thank you. Thank you. That's only going to motivate him more. So it's fuel to the fire, which I think is good for us having into this week. What was the first moment that you saw him at the Pellas? This could be something. I would say probably just his mindset. Not even obviously he's a freak when it comes to his...
