To get that call from Coach Cundee made my day, I was so excited and my family was excited. We're just so glad to be here in Stillwater to be here at Oakland State. Yeah, so compare Lawrence and Captain Kansas to Stillwater. What's that transition to? It's been great. I tell you, there's probably a little more similar, similarities than there are differences. You know, both really good college towns, both great fan bases. You know, not big, not, you know, just great college towns. So, you know, the people are awesome here and, you know, I'm just excited to be here. It's a beautiful place. I'm really enjoying it. Yeah, Coach, and give us some of the names that are having really been talked about enough on the offensive line that you think should be talked about more in the young names. Well, I mean, they're all worthy of being mentioned.
I think they're all working really hard. They're all really good kids. You know, the guys that stand out to me right now, I mean, in terms of just guys that have shown great leadership and the Marcus Keynes and Johnny Wilson. I mean, I really appreciated their leadership and how they've handled themselves because they've been here the longest and they've had to go through, you know, a couple off at the money coaches, you know. I know it's the transition has been hard, but they've been awesome. You know, great leaders and just have done a really nice job in that regard. Some of the younger kids, I talked about, you know, Bryce Bray, you know, he's a lecturer freshman, but he's been competing at that left tackle spot. He was starting for us in the left tackle this whole spring. So going into the fall, he's going to be competing with Dylan, Galowe, because Dylan started some, I think he started six games last year.
So that'll be a nice little battle. You know, Jacob Farrell, I'm very impressed with him. You know, I've been impressed with Hunter Wooders, you know, in terms of his toughness and how he's, his work ethic. But there's a lot of good young guys that have been working really hard. You know, Hunter Anthony and Tyree Swoleons, I'm excited about those guys as well. I've got a good young class today. Thank you for your time today. And thank you very much. We're very welcome. Thank you. Thank you. So you were coaching under Bill Snyder for Forever. Yeah. You could probably write a book about what you learned. What maybe in the synopsis, where did you learn from Snyder coaching under him? Jeez. Well, I mean, just, you know, trying to get better every day, you know, and never be satisfied. And, you know, he was very demanding.
You know, very demanding on his players. He's a man on his coaches. You know, he just, very competitive. You know, and, and he, I've said this before, there's just, there's a lot of similarities between these two programs. And maybe the personalities are different, but, you know, but, but, but, but, you know, when I first, first day, I got here, first day, our first staffing coach, Connie talked about, about us being a more tougher, more physical, more disciplined football team. And that's all coach Snyder would talk, you know, those are the things he would talk about, you know. And just having us being, being, being, being the toughest, most disciplined team out there. And, and, and, and, and that's, you know, so it's like, it was left here in the same thing. And so, and that's what we're stressing, and that's what we want to be. And that's what we're trying to be, that this year, we hear at Oklahoma State.
Well, some of, some of Gummy's best teams, especially early on, are nasty. Yeah. It's a line, and it got away from that a little bit, maybe some of them. But how do they get back to being like that physical? Well, yeah, I think we got to, I mean, I, we got to be demanding on them, and we got to, we got to instill the toughness. And continue to instill the toughness, continue to instill discipline. And, and, and just not be satisfied, you know, and, and, and, and just be demanding on them. What does it mean to be a football team? Well, I mean, I, I just, I just want us to get better every day. And I want us to, my, my goal, again, is for us to, to, to, to be tougher, and to be more physical, and, and, and, and, and to be, and to be, and to be more disciplined, you know, and, and, and, and really focus on those, focus on those attributes. And, and I know if we do, that that will carry over to us being successful in the field.
Yeah. It's being, being such a veteran. How have you seen social media packer? Well, it's, it's impacted quite a bit. Yeah. It's, it's, it's, it's, it's very interesting, you know, and it's, it's, it's, it's taken me, you know, I got it, you know, while it's, it's, it's, it's been, it's been fine, it's been, it's been, it's been, but it is, it is, it is having an impact on, on, on, on, on recruiting for sure. Yeah. The differences between, based on style of offense and we can say it's, the most spread out. How does that affect the career of Joe? Well, that's a great question. I mean, that was probably the biggest transition. For me, was, was just, and one of the most exciting things for me was being able to be a part of this offense because Coach Gundy's offices have been the best, some of the best in the country, period.
They've been awesome. So I wanted to be a part of it, but with that, it was, you know, it can't just stay, we were, we were, you know, ground and pound and we were a lot of quarterback, and some, and, and, but also just taking as much time off the clock as we could so we could keep the, keep the ball away from other defenses, you know, for other, other, other offices. And so just slowing down and that type of stuff. So here was playing fast and getting guys to just teaching my guys to, you know, to get up and make the calls and get the points and that was different. And so, but that's kind of where I was, where I was going to, where I was, you know, where hey, I just being able to, to resource Johnny and Marcus, hey, you know, how do you guys do that? You know, what, what were some of the things, you know, and Jason Meckendo was really helpful with that as well. You know, so, but it's been a great transition, been a great job in a mingle with Sean, and depending upon who wins the quarterback job, one may even work over with the other, what is that kind of working relationship like?
What's been great with Sean? Sean's awesome. I mean, I've said that Sean's got a great, he's got a vision. He knows where he, what he wants and he's very passionate. He's a very intense, very detailed. And so, you know, he knows exactly where he wants this offense to go. And so I'm really excited. I'm really excited to get a chance to work with him. And the whole offensive staff has been awesome. You know, Waz and Casey and Matt have all been great. So, it was really good. Touch Gunny talked in the past about trying to accurately who can't escape before it obviously at this time. All of those pitches, like in those conversations that I've got at the end of those times. Well, I mean, it was great. Coach Gunny's, you know, he's, me, it was awesome. And so, it just circumstances, just, for whatever reasons, just didn't allow me to be able to do it. But, but, but I'm just grateful now for this opportunity. I'm just grateful to Gamer Call. I guess that's one thing I am very grateful for.
I'm very, very thankful for that he, you know, he gave me that call. So, I'm very, really excited to be here. With guys going in, going out, you moving back to guard, going coming in, what was that like in the moment having to adjust on the fly? I mean, we're built for this, like, just how, you know, I moved the center and Steve moved the left guard. We're all pretty much interchangeable. And you can all play all positions across the board. And, you know, when it comes down to that, that time, you know, things like that going to happen. We're ready for it. What did you think of AJ came in and given all of the circumstances for him coming off the back? I mean, all those guys are ready. You know, we prepare during the week, during, during training camp for situations like this. So, it's not, nothing new to them, you know. Guys are calm, cool, collected, they have good composure. So, being elevated, being active, being a starter, you know, we're all in the same boat, ready to fly. I know it's a next man of mentality, but in real time when that was happening, these guys were going down and switching.
What was the challenge for both of them physically and mindset? I mean, we're all, like I said, we're all pretty much interchangeable. You know, like, if I need to go to left guard, center, whatever, both needs to go to center and left guard. However, you know, it's not really like a big shocker moment, you know, we train for this. We're prepared for this. So, when it happens, you know, we're able to execute. I know you're trying to be awake in the switch. To left guard. I think half time. So, coming in, it's a rookie in the crowd and the noise. And I know you said, you guys all trained for this, but what can you tell us about how he... Yeah, I mean, he's a man, you know, he's built for this moment. He's done it for his whole life. So, you know, at the end of the day, it's just a game. And we keep on, we keep trying to keep everybody calm, cool, collected. And, you know, we're five is one. We help each other out. And whenever, you know, we need to, we do it. He was ready. He was built for it. He's going to be a great player.
You're obviously no stranger to Matthew's toughness. What was it like just seeing the way he let this off? I think I, that guy's a warrior. 36 years old. He's taken some hits and some things and some dent. So, he's able to get back up and keep it rolling. You know, he's still got that fire to him. You know, we love having him back there. Sean has always said after a loss, don't let the team beat you twice. But to have the lead late in the game, all the injuries and not win, you describe that level of frustration. I mean, it's the NFL comes down to seconds and inches and you've seen it all through past couple of days and today. You know, it comes down to the little things and, you know, we'll see him again. And I apologize if you were asked this before. What was it like for you personally to walk on the other end of the day? It was kind of surreal, man. It was nice. It was all emotional seeing everybody. I wasn't a kid when I came here. But, you know, I grew into more of a man. And these people here have definitely helped lay that blueprint for me and helped me out big time. I can't thank them enough for that. I know you've looked at film yet for how you feel about the D.
I feel really good, you know, saying it could be because everything was fair for all of a sudden. At OTA, it's showing up. You know, we said I ground. We came up short. I came up short a little bit, but in that end day, you know, it's a lot of the way I'm from. I see a bright future for us. I see nothing on the overtime drive. I mean, you guys have been stopping them and then they just seem to kind of get a role. Yeah, you know, you know, just something that we just need work on. You know, got to play around better on that. And just got a little bit of big plays. That's all that it comes down to. But overall, I just felt like we just came up short on that. That's the offense. It's kind of struggling to find its footing early in the game. What did you guys feel like you had to do as a defense team? I feel like we just need to step up, you know, I know they would have come through and have our bags. So I just tell them to office, you know, we got our bag, you know, just keep going, y'all doing what we want to keep on trying. Hold on the best we can. So how did the visit go? Oh, it was great. Yeah, I loved the staff here. You can tell it has really good family times, a strong connection.
What were some things that you were looking for on your visit? Whether it was, you know, talking to coach and our vales team. I guess what was important to you on this visit? So, I mean, for me, I mean, like, this was kind of like a big decision for me where I'm assigned to kind of like not finish my degree of rest and then to the court of the cycle. I can, you know, find the place where I can develop the most and then just have to go to a line coach, you know, final place where I can face a competition not only in games, but also in practice as well. And probably the most important is just finding a good guy that are dedicated to winning, dedicated to being great because I mean, we have a team of me guys who aren't serious about not to be great. It's wasting time and money, so I mean, it's a little problem, not big three, but the culture being kind of important. Being around coach, you know, hand today, what was kind of the things that you noticed around him, just whether it's how he is or just what your thoughts of him being around him. And he's an incredibly detailed guy. Yeah, I got that for sure for a moment. It's like watching a film like he broke down with some kind of fellow me and he also kind of worked on some of the guys that he's coaching the past that are similar to me.
And, you know, that was a, you really just show how good of a coach he is. You know, getting no coach on the belt during this experience, what has that got to do? It was good. He's a very passionate guy. And I mean, I love that. Like, a head coach should have that. Now, you can tell how much he cares about what the guys want to program. About the psyche, being dedicated, being driven to win, to succeed. What did they tell you about the opportunity here as far as meeting a player of your sort at a position on the offensive line? Well, I mean, they see me at a left tackle and it's, I'll be a good fit, you know, coming in. I was a coach, no doubt, stressed, you know, and also, other great, almost a lineman in the portal that have lost a great school because in that field, why it's on now be a good fit when it comes to, which is what you guys do. But, what if he does a little sight for people here? What's kind of the ultimate feeling now about FSU? Have you solved this big experience with them? What's kind of the feeling about them?
Yeah, it's definitely a good feeling. It's great. I don't know. Glad I was actually able to come down here because I'm in calls and focus on nice, but, you know, in person, it's a lot different. It's a game to know the staff, your game to know coach, your coach, and probably it was a great experience. Who else have you checked out during this process? What other schools? Well, I've talked to some other staff, talked to a house in Iowa and A&M, really just, you know, that's what I've been, I've tried to keep the short, try to keep the sweet, or really need to be 20 months of schools. I mean, that's not the main priority. Are you entering decision mode now, or do you intend to take some trips in early January? Yeah, I'm done with this, 21 design. It's something for Christmas. For those of us who have seen the McIvoyts, would it kind of your strengths in areas that you're looking to improve them? So, shrink wise, I would say, probably just move it. I mean, I have a technical shirt, I'm a big love for a 300, 45 pound guy, I have a good shot.
I fight evident on film. I think that's a good idea, my stance is a big thing for me, so big, and it's a good thing for me. But at the same time, also doesn't need to assist in handplacing a bunch of hard work in general, just like me. If you're a big strong guy, you can only do so much, but you don't have the right to need so. That's a big reason why I want to have a good old one, I wish we were able to find out that it needs to be precise with everything. That's kind of why you're all looking for a 300. A lot of low-hours fans, because they always travel, but are we a pro Texas crowd for the most part? Do you guys kind of thrive off that? Do you like that kind of being the enemy? I mean, you can say that, but we don't really try to focus on the fans, we just want to produce on the field. If it's a way game, home game, we just want to go out there and execute. Right, Cameron T. Robinson, the athletic. There's a lot to say when you guys all came back, you guys all came back.
The last two games, we have 12 stacks, and you guys really are blitzing the time. It's not even the start, the bench guys can yada, and the players come in, which is what's it been like to see this room? Realize it's potential and kind of with the kind of recap of the last two weeks. I said we always knew what we had in our room. Now it's just showing up. Teams are scheming us different ways, and it's allowing certain players to make certain plays. I think we got so many guys in the room. We have two that can be ones anywhere. We have three that can be ones anywhere in the country. But they all decided to stick here and grind this thing out with the guys they came in with. Like I said, I think we have a great group who can make plays anytime. When you guys get 8 stacks in a game, but also hold it, they've been holding all this of minus 25 rush yards in a game. What is that like? What is that say if I just got rid of the job you guys did last night?
I think it's a great feeling looking up at the scoreboard and seeing a negative. Definitely. But it's just like all the work we put in over the summer, over the season. We've been building this defense to where it is now. And like I said, when we're executing and we're at a high level, it's hard to do anything with us. Behind them, Jeremy Birmingham, the bot cap. I'm not going to ask you to call out officials, but I do want to ask you, have you ever been told before? Yeah, I think our whole D-line gets held every game. I don't know what the reps are seeing or what's going on with that, but you turn on the tape and really look at it. We're held almost every play. Is there something that you can do better actors? You can be more dramatic about it. What do you think has to happen for it to get called in your favor one time this season? We can be actors, but we don't really teach nothing like that. But I don't know if it's real high, because we're a high-level state. You're letting things go or what it is, but it's been pretty bad.
I know y'all see it too. It's every play, almost every game. We got you. Adam King, WBNF. We have a chance to see a glimpse of Coach Day's pre-game speech. The intensity that you've seen for them for the last two games in the playoffs. Is that different than you've seen throughout the year? And what does that do for this group before you go out on the field anymore? I want to say it's different. He's been like that his whole year, but just now it's getting recorded and posted. But definitely when you see your head coach, it's fired up like that. It likes to fire, and you go out there and do better. And you can't thank Coach Day enough, because he's our leader over his team. And he's like that. He makes you want to go out there and do great for him, for the guys around us. Scotty, we're going to go to you with a couple of our Zoom. Yes, sir. We're going to start with Andy Anders. Andy, go ahead. Yeah, Aliq. Texas has a lot of outside zone schemes.
What's important for the thing those kinds of plays on the ground? And I guess just striking out those kinds of so to speak. He said that again. I don't need to get there. Yeah, just Texas runs a lot of outside zone in their run game. Running schemes. Just what's important for defending that kind of play as a tackle? For a detackle versus a stretch team, you always want to talk about penetration, like penetrating the line and not catching. Because once you know you penetrate the stretch, it basically stops the stretch and makes them, you know, cut back to, you know, unblocked players. So really just attacking this game and not catching. Next question is going to come from Dan Hope. Dan, go ahead. Hi, Leake, you are in a freshman class with Quinn. Now you're playing against him a few years later. Just what's that like for you? You know, Quinn's my guy. You know, he's a great competitor, great quarterback.
I think it'll be fun going against him, you know, trying to get him running around. Next question comes from Kurt Bulls. Kurt, go ahead. Yeah, tell me, I don't know if there's one thing you can pinpoint why y'all been so dominant. I would think maybe it comes back under the physical brand of football. Do you feel that's going to be the survivor in this game? Who's the more physical team? I'll say definitely the more the most violent team, you know, the team that plays the fastest, executes the most. And you know, exceeds their game plan to most is going to win this game. I found a question will come from Stefan from Cleveland.com. Ty Lee, what's kind of your relationship been like with Ty Hamilton, especially as the seasons progressed and just how in sync do you feel like you two are playing on a defensive line together? Me and Ty are, you know, we've been roommates for the past two years.
We live in the same apartment complex. We played a game together. It's really like one of my best friends on the team. We talk about a lot of football things. So we're really on the same page with a lot of plays, teams like to run against us. And who could be some stunts we've run, we're always connected in some kind of way. Jerry, back to you. Great, thanks. You got that. Just a couple more questions. Joy, come up and Columbus this bad. Ty Lee, what does it say about your defensive line and how pride for you guys when you can get 8-sacks, 13 tackles for loss, about having to bring a ton of extra guys and pressure, but you can just go forward and do a lot of that. I'll say Kudos to our coach, Coach Jay. He teaches a lot of technique and sometimes it doesn't show up because you know, team scheme you different ways. But when you have a team one dimensional, like they have to pass the ball, that's when all the, you know, the fast rush technique and stuff comes out. And I think we've gotten Tennessee and Oregon to those situations where they had to pass the ball and, you know, just let us rush free instead of worrying about it.
What's that makes sense? You guys just, what do you know is one of one of those past rushing situations, so I see it so many sacks and TFLs? Yeah, I'll say we're definitely winning way more 101s now. And, you know, they're not keeping as many guys in the box to block us because they have to, you know, they're trying to come back. So I think it's, like I said, it's just Kudos to the offense, you know, creating these big leads and making teams one dimensional. Go to the far left, David Bidouz, Ben WCME. Tyler, we've talked about how better the team has gotten. I have this tube getting off to fast starts on those sides of the ball, but there has been some scoring late in the first half. Like it's time to see in the gets Oregon. Has there been renewed emphasis on controlling the middle eight and how important will that be against Texas? Definitely, you know, that's one of Coach Day's biggest points, you know, controlling the middle eight. You control the middle eight, you like chances of you winning that game goes, you know, skyrockets. So definitely versus Tennessee, Oregon, we give up touchdowns, you know, lay in the second half. I mean, first half, but we, you know, we just got to keep our foot on the gas.
We can't let up like at all because these teams we're playing are great teams like Texas is a great team. You know, the gray offense, gray offense, a line, gray quarterback, great receivers, great running backs. So you know, we just got to just keep executing like we know we can and you see how it plays out. Final question for Tyler Lee here. Did you meet Letterman Rowe? Yeah, tell me, you know, Aaron Doney, you used to talk about everybody's hurting at this time of the year. But when the lights come on and the snap goes, what goes off in a guy like yours, mine, I mean, from the standpoint of making the play. I mean, can you explain that to people don't get to play down in the middle of it all? I'll say, you know, like I said, you're right. Everybody has heard around this time. You know, we're 15th week, 14th, you know, deep in the season. You know, you just got to show up. That's my mindset. You just got to show up. No matter what I'm going through, I got to make that play. I got to be disruptive, you know, just to help my team out. Because when I'm on my A game, you know, everybody else can, you know, feed off of me or we can feed off for like, you know, JT Jack tie.
But I said, you know, Coach, make it always says like nobody cares. Like it's true. Nobody really cares if you're a hurried stranger. You just got to go out there and play and make plays. Just a little bit. Explain the drive you have personally to get to through this next one into the next one. But I know it's one step at a time, but you know, you came back, etc. Explain people what's going on in your brain about your motivation. My motivation, you know, we all have our wise, you know, while we're doing things, you know, we have family, you know, family here, our team, our brotherhood. But, you just got to do, you know, you write for your brothers, you know, on this team, you know, we're trying to win the big thing. We're not just, you know, trying to go win two games and lose. We're trying to win the big thing, you know. As long as we stay motivated, stay, you know, humble, like, you know, take the rap poisoning, you know, things like that. And just execute and just play our hardest, you know, that will be fine.
Thank you very much. Yes. So that is the house of Spring, the big old Max who had been healthy? Yes, sir. I feel very healthy. Obviously coming off a season and ending injury last year, I'm feeling really good, feeling better than ever to be honest. Even better than I did before the season last year. So it's been a great spring so far. How does the point of being here, your office at the great start last year? Yeah, I mean, it was, it was a hard time. I mean, it's definitely not easy going through any injury, especially during the season like that. But, you know, it builds character. I think it's good for me in the long term. I also built that for the time of the season. Oh, for sure. Yeah. Just saw some key pieces coming there and produced at a high level. What do you think, George? George is a stud. Once he gets healthy, he's going to be great. He's working really hard right now. And he's going to, he's going to have a great season this year. Personally, how exciting is it for you to be kind of your position now this year?
Yeah, it's super exciting. You know, I got a lot better feel for the offense this year. Really good rapport with Hudson and it's been a fun spring so far. So just got to keep, keep carrying that on and see where it takes us. Obviously, when you're sideline, you're not playing how important is it to stay like mentally ready and mentally get those reps so that when you come into the spring, you can improve. Definitely. I mean, that's all it is really just mentally. Envisioning the plays, envisioning making the plays and every night, you know, I think about it probably every day. So it was it was a big part of it for sure. How have you gotten better? I think just understanding the defenses and understanding where the quarterback wants me at a specific time. And, you know, building that trust with him is huge and I think I've been doing a pretty good job of that. How does that relationship with you and Hudson developing do you too? Yeah, it's developing great. I mean, we have a great friendship off the field. So, you know, that helps a lot on the field as well. So we have a great connection, you know, both on and off the field and it only helps.
Your brother's coming right? Yeah, yeah. So you'll be here in May. It'll be a lot of fun. It'll be a lot of fun having him up here. What do you need to see a lot of this team on that Saturday? You know, go out there and play hard, limit the mistakes and at the end of the day it's just being consistent with what we do and playing hard. So that's why I want to see if for sure. You feel like everyone's more prepared for this spring game? Oh, for sure. I think we're way ahead of last year and I'm excited to see where it takes us. Anything on Diver or the freshman? Yeah, Drew Biver. Yeah, he's getting healthy now. He's looking great. He looked really healthy today. And I'm super excited to play with him. He's a lot of fun to play with. Just how quick is this turnaround? You guys just started practicing a couple of weeks ago and now you have a spring game to get to? It's pretty quick, but you know, I like it. I like it a lot. So it's fun to get out there and play. You know, I'll let him be 11, put the ball down and go. I mean, that's the goal. That's the goal every day. You know, that's what I'm reaching for. And whether I get it or not, who knows, but that's what I'm reaching for every day.
There'd be a leader like how he is. I mean, he's just unbelievable leader and we all lean on him. He runs his whole team and he knows that. We'll go as far as he goes. Jeremy Birmingham, the podcast. We talked a little bit last week, just kind of you being becoming one of the emotional leaders of the team. As you get from walking off the field, I have to be down there by the locker room. I was the only person to take photos of you guys down there. It's weird. But everyone looks super nice. We're up 34 to 8. And it looked like you got down by 26 points. Did you feel something different about the focus at that point in this team? Or is it just a bit of modernism of what's going on right now? Because it seemed different. I just think the job wasn't done. We were here nothing to be excited about at the moment. You know, we were excited there to game where we're making a plays. But at that time, you go back to zero, zero. They scored.
They scored a thing in a half. We knew they got the ball back. The defense wasn't quite happy that they gave that touchdown at the end. And we knew they get in the ball back coming out. But we was excited because we knew the job wasn't done yet. Bill Rebellion, Columbus, this way. You were a five star guy. And that coming up. All these guys in the room almost were five star guys. And then there's Jeremiah. Does he like all you guys in the room? I mean, I'm not sure if it's probably something you got to ask him. But Jeremiah has played with a lot of great guys throughout his career. I mean, all the talent you can see in the world. But I don't know if he's ever in all. Oh, and I, oh, yeah. I mean, I'm not surprised at anything he does now. Like I've seen him. We were nine years old. So anything he does, anyone hand catch. I've seen. I'm not surprised at anything he does. When he was nine, did you know this is not a, this is something special.
We've been there. Any of that nine? Oh, yeah. I mean, coaches were coming up to us complaining that we were nine. We were nine years old. Like, can we, can we get their IDs and stuff like that? So I mean, I mean, there's definitely some footage. I, we got to go find, but the place we used to make when we were younger and just to see where he is now is amazing. And it seems very unaffected by all of the starter. Yeah. How does that happen? I think how he was raised. He's very level-headed. He knows his goals and what he wants to get done in life. And this is just one step of the way for him. I'm gonna throw it back to Texas for a couple of questions on Zoom. Scottie. Yes, sir. We're gonna start with Defon from Cleveland.com. Go ahead. Brandon, I want to go back to what you were talking about with Coach Day earlier. You know, whenever he talks about this team's success, he says all the credit goes through players that seems like the players think that he deserves some of the credit. How big? How influential has he been during the turnaround you guys have had these last few weeks?
He's been huge, man. Coming here after that team of North Wallace, you know, it was heartbreaking, of course. But we came in here. We had a leadership meeting. He was in here. I mean, and then we had a team meeting after that. Hearing the stuff he had to say and we had to say going back and forth, we just, we knew, we would have his back no matter what. I mean, there's a lot of stuff said about him and his family and stuff like that. But in here, we're brotherhood and we're family and we just, we go stand by him no matter what. Our next question is gonna come from Dan. Hope Dan go ahead. Brandon, I mean, I'm sure you came in here to Ohio State thinking you'd probably be starting here in your second year. But it seems like you really embraced the growth process. Just what's kind of that process been like for you of kind of embracing your role this season and continuing to develop? Yeah. In life, things doesn't go the way you exactly planted, too. And that just happened, you know, things happened to Mecca last year that allowed him to come back.
And that allowed me to learn more. And that's just how I see it. It makes me a better football player for the future. So yeah, I mean, yeah, let's see it. Three more on Zoom. Next one's gonna come from Stefan means. Go ahead. Stephen, but that's dark. Yeah, you're good. Brandon, there are a lot of clips of you this year where you're super, super excited after a block. And kind of showing your emotion there. What about blocking do you love so much as a receiver? Just being able to hit another guy with all my power. The hardest I can without any consequences. Except if you accept a few hold, of course. But yeah, just bringing that power. I mean, I heard some of the defensive guys telling me yesterday they were like, I hate to go against you. So knowing that from the defensive guys.
So I know what the other defensive guys are thinking like, just keep bringing it to them. They're not going to like it for four quarters. That's my mindset. Next question's gonna come from Danny Davis. Danny go ahead. Brandon, what are your impressions of these Texas defensive backs and this kind of we've seen from them on on film so far? Yeah, the last couple of days we watched them. They're fast team. They don't give up many big plays down field. They're aggressive, but I actually know some of the DB's they have at corner there. They play with them. Well, I played with Malik Muhammad at SFE. So I might know him a little bit and we have been watching them. They're fast team. They're physical. They're disciplined. But we just got to get the job. Give any Malik stories or any any. What do you say? Give any Malik stories or anything you remember about playing with them. Oh, um.
Yeah, but I'm not going to say them here. Yeah, what's this keep that? Our final question's gonna come from Kurt Bowles. Kurt, go ahead. Hey, Brandon. One of the issues Texas has had the second half of the year is it's finishing. And what if you can speak to and they had a trouble obviously in the peach bowl, you know, blue was 16 point leak. And you talk about finishing and having a killer instinct and you guys obviously seem to have that now. Yeah, I think that started started in offseason training at fall camp. We always say go plus two. If you're doing a 10 yard pro shuttle to a yet to go plus two throughout the line. And that's just finishing up as well. And then fall camp. We had these long two and a half hour practices or whatnot. And then we came out and we had to do these finishers. We called them ask for games late in the year like this. I think Coach Day has a great, did a great job preparing all of us for these moments.
And yeah, we just were ready to go. We have time for just a couple more questions in Columbus so we can wrap up with our other two guys. Bill Landis, Kingston, the north. Brandon, try me on the second touchdown run. It seemed like you took two players out of the play. First with your release and then with the guy you actually blocked. Is that how it's designed? It was just lucky that the guy decided to take off his side of the release. It's actually designed for me to block the safety and lead the corner 101 with the running back. But I was surprised that the corner actually came in so far. I'm out of the lease. I think he thought it was a pass. But I think he was the edge of the defense. If you go watch that play, but I don't know, I don't really know why he came in so far. But it helped out for us and I made my block into a real score. Is there any lesson there for like a young receiver watching that? Even if you know him to play, you're not getting the ball. You're intended to block, but you release has to be at all point as if you're going to catch a pass.
Yeah, definitely. Every little detail matters and then type of plays. We were in a red zone there. So we say every yard matters. It's two yards. So the block I made is just a testament to Kyle. Coach Hardline prepped me throughout the week to make that block. And final question. Joy Confin, Columbus this patch. Brandon Will and then there's been some of the ball deep well lately. And some of the special way you guys have opened games. What do you think is his click for you guys and for him and watching those plays? A lot more confidence. I say throughout the year, we were always there as offense. We had, we didn't quite know our identity. And now slowly but surely I think we found that and we're going to keep on rolling. And he's made some great throws and yeah. I'm sorry, Brandon. I do have one more. Steve, how are you doing? How are you doing? I'm playing for 7-Sports. Brandon, there have been opportunities for you to play a huge role on offense. And the number of plays you play in game can differ from one week to the next.
But the opportunity is coming sooner rather than later for you to be at every down player. What are the things you need to do in your game to take it to where it is now to be in every down guy? I think there's a lot of things I could work on in my game. I would say continuing to be football smart by IQ. Just knowing what the defense is going to do before they do it. My routes always can get better. My hands always can get better staying in the jugging machine. Work ethic, keep on top of it. Don't get satisfied with anything I do. Don't get too big, don't get too low. Don't get too high. Don't get too low is what they say. You feel like a guy that the people follow, it seems. Even the second you're guy, you're kind of working toward being kind of a leadership type guy. I got the... The important is that to have guys that will take that role. It's a great feeling, of course. No guys are watching what you do and listening to what you do.
But we do that with a lot of players here and not just myself. But the leadership we have on this team is like no other. That's why we got so far, I think. Brandon, thank you very much. What's it to you about the possibility of going into this season? What do you... You stand by, I'm sorry. I mean, it isn't a big happen, really. I'm going to stand by, I'm not sure if you're sitting there. Does it seem like a big big blow? I mean, I guess you just got to learn everything slowly. Of course, there's a lot to learn. But I got a lot of hope. You guys had a very unique experience all the early and early roles. You got a chance to go to semi-final. Some of you went to the Rose Bowl, there's nothing caught in a little national championship game. What was that like? How much do you think that helped you? That was incredible. I think that was the most difficult part of making the transition from Liza to the Marcos. What has been living on your own?
You got to be independent. I think that's the most important thing. I think that's the most important thing to do. I think that's the most important thing to do. That's the most important thing to do. That's the most important thing to do. I was really just living on my own. You got to be independent. That's pretty much it though. Do you feel comfortable on that? Are you still trying to get on the South? I mean, of course, there's adjustment, but I'm getting it just for you. I guess your money is 100% You don't have to answer your dirty thing. I don't think it's hard to hold a good start here. Of course, I'm sorry to miss my senior year. I was a last year kind of with some of my best friends. What did you do to you? I think you did my hand right? It was an empty real, really good.
Sorry, this is not sorry, but how long did you get your... When you're certain, you called me? Really, since I was a baby, my dad, I called him my dad and my master, called me. I was like, I always called him. Like, once I was born, I was like, whatever. Why did you invite him? My dad looked up to me and I'm a junior, so I was working again. I think you should hear for the same thing. Okay, so you could wear eight, too. You got two choices. Okay, it's a desire that can be addicted for people. I fell into that, I know a younger age, but I'm super bad. That's not what I am. Is it good? I watched the lab last time I started a landman on the planet, download it, it's a pressure.
What do you think about that? I don't know that. I don't know how he handles it. It's a good show, you can be able to see him coming on the camera with all this money. I'm excited to see how I got this. Oh, I thought he did a good job. I was surprised, honestly, he seemed like he knew what he was doing for me. You say you hit your mom in salary, you get to win it all, but mom will get a pay raise. I don't know what to talk about that, is there a meeting or something? The computer. Everybody should have a meeting about the computer. I don't know what to talk about, but I'm not sure if I can find a solution. I'm just going to have to know you. Is there another people that I was trying to find my solution? Yeah, well, first off, I think I'd be doing this service to my teammates.
You know, we even think about what's next. What's right in front of us is an overhaul. That's another thing I've got to tell me so much through is just being present in every single moment that I'm in. Not looking too far ahead because I'm tripping on what's right in front of me. That's too self-insub, I'm thinking for media to be thinking about what's next. Victor, are you at least aware that there's a lot of speculation out there that people are going to throw a huge number of things to do to go and report all the season? Right now I'm just not worried about all that stuff. People can say all they want to say, but I'm just focused on front. I mean, I still get nervous for sure, but I just don't think I'm doing good job just understanding that. At that moment, whatever moment it is that I'm nervous about, it doesn't define who I am as a person.
And it doesn't define who I am and God's eyes. And understanding and knowing that has just kind of put this force field of peace around me that I think Able allows me to be able to be calm in certain situations. But that's not good. What's your favorite thing about this? I mean, I just love the game so much. And if you don't get nervous or a little bit of work, I would think you have that same love. I mean, I've got butterflies since going into football games since I was five, six years old. I don't know what that feels like. I didn't know. Football just doesn't mean as much as it did to me back then. I want to tell you always that much. I've been told that I was going to have a lot of fun. I think so. Who's the most real outstakes player in the world? It's me and I on how to stay together.
I'm really playing as much. I just wanted to get more experience under my belt. I can bring younger guys with me because I've been going around. One of those younger guys, we're seeing it out here. It's the first time I've heard all those last years. What have you seen from Will? I've kind of felt like last year we all forgot about him because he was hurt. Now, he's running almost a second man up behind you and Ty. What have you seen from that? Will's a workhorse. He goes, stay quiet. He's going to work hard. That's all I love about him. He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's just going to get the job done. Do a job right. He rarely has any mistakes. What would be a successful season? A national championship. I'm ring. When all the games we don't want to lose anything, we've got a mindset that we can't be beat. And we just got to go show it. It's like, is that mindset different? It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year. This year, even more so, you guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided enough as an athlete. Is that to keep feeling different?
Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go bigger, go home, and we're not trying to go home. So it's finished big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute. Right? You know what I mean? I mean, you were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that, hey, you guys won a winner national championship. But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year. Like you're that close. So I'm saying we just like work harder. That's kind of coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares. Just work harder. Like those, you know, one plate Georgia is the same thing. Last, last play, you know, they went on the win in 90. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles.
Of course, as you know, it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought I was working hard, but then you always find out there's a little more that you could have been doing. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought, freshman year, I was working as hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. What do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder in shape. The idea of a potentially successful year, is that the idea is to make you nervous about can you last that long?
You really need your work. I think, I think we, I definitely get lies. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody's like online, D line. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know. Get that pieces on the D line and all on and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of the life plan, did you like playing that new snap again last year? Because I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that next time. Uh, yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a lot. Uh, I thought like there are no moments you know, I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame, two of North, those kind of games. Of course, I want to be because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I do our job. It stands out about Kaden McDonald because he got the key. You guys a little second. Oh, yeah, definitely. K Mac is a K Mac animal. Y'all you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now.
He has to work ethic. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to six three. You're three 27. He's three 26. Yeah, he's, I kind of look at him like my mother. He's kind of looking at him like my junior, but, you know, he might be a great player. He's got to develop more and get the playbook. So really a lot on you older guys. There's a large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right, burn all season. So they can play. And I just played. I want to like contribute like make plays tackles sex. It seems like these guys get bigger. Each one of the first one class. You know, you guys kind of, it doesn't kind of why you want to solve the first. Yeah, there definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of some day to pass on, but throughout the workouts,
they've been working hard, you know, they're determined. I have to say that. And it looks like they're ready to work at me. I'm going to score this. It feels like there's a lot of great defenses. You have big athletic defense attacks who can eat up space. But also move, you know, right? That is that. Does that have an environment maybe for great defense? To have guys like you that have some fault. But also a great team. I think that is definitely. I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners, like see my North, they didn't know they got two good, uh, detaco two athletic detacres. Look at Georgia two athletic detacres. So I think that's definitely need if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, if they want to fight by the defense attack, it's like, what's Georgia? Jordan Davis and James Carter. Let's miss again. It's Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions. You know, it is funny like how, I mean, you understand it because you play it.
But I feel like some time, I don't know, are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakish detacres. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving forward to four, seven, eights and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about those freakish attack attacks, how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacres. But I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch it do the drills. I have a tape here. You're like, you're looking like my film. So I think I'm up there with all those guys. Tyler, do you become like an artist who comes into the bad young passes? The thing your legs have your things. I mean, you're going to spring practice. You're not doing it as much on 11 on 11. I'm not going to stop. How do you work on that? Do you have like a goal? I don't remember how much I've lost your play. You have a goal in mind. How many do you want to have?
I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that. But I think he said it. I think he said it. I think he can count some of them. And it's some of them where I just missed it. But I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that goes big. And what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter. I guess anyway you can. It's just great for the defense. You know, just that little thing covering his eye, you know, he might throw it. A little bit to the left to our player. So it's something that you really, really have to work on. It's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You don't have to get through your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that passed me a few times. We don't have to ask this. We kind of kind of expect it. I think I just have like an eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him, I load up. I just try to get in his way. And sometimes he throws it to me. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you one.
I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Although he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. Best back in this drive. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all decision. Playing with Will Howard. What I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard man. He's just such a great leader. He's just such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where usually a lot of players they fold. Man, he was just always calm and relaxed. Man, he just the leader that he was, man. That's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's shoot. He's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people is, man, he's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so, man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player.
And so, man, yeah, definitely Ohio State. You know, that running back room is in great hands. I was right there. I got looking at the UFC spot. And I was talking about the base of your personality. And I'm just looking at the coach. I'm looking at the same way. Yeah. Coach Hartlund, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well. You know, I'm just learning from him as well. I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartlund. And so, he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so, I think that would do really good. It's really good. What's your intensity, man? Just intensity, man. Just intensity, man. And intensity of the playoffs. Every game, man, it's like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and intensity keeps getting higher and higher. And so, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work. Just like Ohio State. You know, I definitely feel like Ohio State.
They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know I took a couple of days off after the national championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at Yo-Murf Performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in. And the way they went about training, they're going to be able to do it. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in. And the way they went about training us, man, they did a really good job. I mean, that would be cool, you knew it? The bucking nearest. No, I haven't. We think it's City Tampa. Tampa. Tampa, Tampa, nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. It's a pretty good city. The 40, the broad and the vert. You've been on races and awesome lockers.
Do you speak to your mentality of like when you've got a linebacker or something? Yeah. Yeah, man. It's really all about technique. And then it's about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Wil Howard. It's for the love of the receiver. It's where I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Wil I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit. And so, I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that. But I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man. Making sure the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You had to hit the break just a few days later today. What is something you've been working on right now? In my game. You can't really work on this, you know, in all season. I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on.
You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe. It's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so, that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better at it. I feel like I did a good job of that in my senior year. And so, I just want to continue to build on that. Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So, people trained me to look like now, but tomorrow, you get back in nursing every day. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera. Sure, yeah, man, I have a Camera. Great, great back, man. Just what he does and knows, 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie, he's smooth. Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield. You know, a man and man coverage, you're getting on that linebacker.
And so. Yeah, I say the man, the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man. And the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard, you know, even shoot. I don't know, every good, I think he had a, every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely, man, he's going to be a special player, man. He really is. Man, a lot of ups and downs, man, it's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better.
It's just, I'm not having something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't, it's not too much, they can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so, being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments where it's tough, you know, where it's slow. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort. You know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't, you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so, that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so, The back of the firm, Peterson Power and Judgment, what aspect can be to those other individuals that you want to follow and be around power and peace? Um, man, those guys have such a great mentality, man.
Am I just really loved their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham mentality, man, um, that boy just, yeah, that boy just gives me a lot of peace. Yeah, that boy just gifted, you know, you see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, still forming somebody and shoot, it's a game to 10. And so, You know, You know, he's just really like this two different guys. Yeah. Um, shoot, I think, Yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, too, beyond it. He's just gifted, you know, he's, he's a big back. You know, he's strong and so, um, you know, he's, he's able to do, he's able to do those things. And so, um, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quincham. You know, I want to look at this game and it's like, man, where, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. What are your last two tweets? Julian Sand. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man.
He's so, so accurate. And so, um, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, um, container, grow as a leader, container, grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for high state. Thanks, boss. I know just the quarterback position. Um, I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to, um, ask Julian Sand as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead, um, and lead the offense and lead the team. Thanks, Tray. Thanks, boss. Shoot, man. He has, he has a build like JK Dobbins. And, um, I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins. He was a great running back. Um, I feel like he's not talked about his, no, um, a lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights. Is, is great. I remember, um, before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights. I remember every, every, um, one of his years here, like four or five times.
And so, man, he was such a great back. And, um, I feel like, you know, um, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see, um, James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same. And so, I appreciate you all. Yeah, I'll be going. This. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Alright. Hey. Okay. Okay. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. You're. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. I take this. Let me apologize. Okay. Okay. Okay. I got coming in last year I knew the road so I just tacked Eric really the same way.
It's taking advantage very well. Physically, how different are you weight wise, body wise on that from the year? I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240. You know, like 240 for right now. Last year I played at like 236 to 37. What does it feel like at 244 or better? You feel like an almost a different machine out there. What does it feel like to be running around out there like you are, but with more back? I just feel like I'm like like more downhill, like stronger like I'm taking a little blood to better. It's bigger. Yeah. Is it daunting? Maybe that's not the correct term. But to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year and stuff. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? Is it going to get ready to just play 30 more snaps? But how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-stand point? I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. I'm ready for it.
The text is open. It's a rematch. But it's not really two different teams compared to the last time you all played and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming, so we know we got to do it. We've been prepared for it. I already just broadly worked today. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman. He ended up here in the book. He stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy. He saw it like the saw line too. I said you're ready. I know you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Did you feel yourself becoming more and more ready? So every team needed for me? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Which is whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly.
I think I'm there. What's the difference between feeling this year and then life? I asked the one more time. How different is that responsibility? Is that you just know what you're going to call that? It was last year. You knew you were a homemaker. I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was intentional with everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Is somebody who's some reason that you see me as a child? And what word? How's anybody worth your watch? I say, describe my game. I say, when you think of me, you would think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet. I don't really know bullet. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. I don't think I'm going to be my nickname.
I'm not saying that the nickname can be that's what I'm saying. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's like. How much of a trick is this style and how it's free? How does that fit you? And what are you going to be showing about the whole aim in that kind of stuff? I think it fit me because I just like the defense. I feel like we got, like you said, we got a lot of freedom. We're moving around a lot of the terms. You know, I don't know. I don't really know how to answer that. That's okay. You can go on your instincts a little bit more, maybe. That's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on. But it's like, I just like his defense. I like how the pressure deep is. I like what he got going on. What was it, Sadwin? CJ left me. Yeah. Now I wanted to much sad. I was kind of like happy for him. Yeah. That's what you want. No. No. No, no, no. That's my dog. I'm going to say it. Kind of missing a little bit. But yeah, I'm happy for him though. Well, Bill, thank you. Go ahead. One last question.
Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship. You guys will win your own. How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and I want him to come here. Your classmates. Yeah, I do feel like, um, yeah, I do feel like I did win a national championship, but like you said, my role wasn't the same as how it's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to go get another one experienced that like feeling with me, be on the field, a lot more place. That's it. Great. Oh, Bill, thank you very much. I'm sure they've been using you, you know, in that almost that safety role of stuff. How much is it grown that you can put your finger on? Yeah, I was growing immensely. I mean, Caleb, he makes a lot of checks. Latham makes a lot of checks. I listen to them. Whatever they need, if I need to cover somebody out, I'll go cover anybody. If they need me to do run support, I'll do run support. And it's really what Caleb does, what we do and Latham. It just goes back to the coach G's preparation and everyone's preparation to give us more flexibility
and doesn't matter who's in those positions. And we can all play every position whether it's covering somebody or running and tackling. Did you feel like that was the case before the Oregon game? You're saying what I'm saying? I mean, is it something that's been added to just, you know, rely on a little bit more, go ahead. Yeah, it did. I was probably the Nebraska game, Megan and more safety reps. And we had a five week to prepare. So I really learned to play, but a lot more, even though I knew the play, but I learned a lot more, it's like in debt, you know, so really just after the Oregon game, it helped me a lot to go back to safety, go to NICU everywhere. So, Dan, what are you guys having a lot of issues of giving up a big play in the passing game of the first game against Oregon? What do you feel you guys need to do better just to have a round of some, make sure that doesn't happen? Just the same mindset we got to challenge these receivers. You know, every dog has their day. Maybe some people didn't have their day that game, but we'll look out there and hopefully change the narrative.
And we still play with the same confidence, same technique and, yeah. Bill Rebinoff, what's the best match? And Denzel obviously had a tough game and that one. What have you seen from him and how he's responded? Do you get a sense of from him? How pumped he is for this rematch? Oh, yeah, he's super stoked for this rematch. His preparation has been very good. He's always been preparing, even though it didn't go the way he wanted to go that game. But he just always had his confidence and we're going to see a big game out of him this week. And, you know, I know you guys wanted to play them in anapolis, but the fact that you get to play them at the Rose Bowl, I mean, get a second chance and people have said he don't get that very often. How determined are you guys to take advantage of it? We're super, super determined. We watched film. I mean, we've watched a lot of film. The first time we played them, now we've got another six games that they played of film to watch. And it's just they've grown a lot as a team, same as us. We've grown a lot.
We're not the same team. We were when we played them week one or weeks six or whatever. But now we're out there and going to play fast, physical and everything like that. All right, Jordan, we're going to jump to the to assume a question here from Joey Kaufman. Columbus, this match. Oh, my bad. Not too Joey. Cameron T. Robinson, the athletic. Hey, Jordan, you've moved around a lot in the second day in your career. And now kind of getting some many more safety reps. What is it like at this point when Walt or Coach Mills comes to you and asks you to do some else? And just how much can you lean on the experiences you've had moving around when you're trying to learn something new in the middle of the season? It means a lot. We always talk about this is if it's being on selfish. Whether that's making plays or not making plays or doing your job so another person can make plays. That's kind of what we pride ourselves on. And it's just fun. Me moving around different positions. I'm always up for a new challenge. And a lot of people in the country can't do that.
I just hold myself to that standard where I can play any position and excel at it. Okay. If anybody else needs a question, let me know. But otherwise we're going to go to Austin more of the podcast. Jordan, when you were talking about watching film Oregon, which one do you think is more valuable to you watching that against yourself? Seven games ago, even if you've changed or the ensuing six games for Oregon, which one do you put more stock in? Kind of both. For me, I kind of watch what I did, things I did well, things I didn't do too well against them. And their team is changing, some players have been out those stretch of games. So I really watched the past game we played. And I know they're going to go back to some of the stuff that they liked, of course. And different games like Penn State, maybe Illinois, they run a lot of men. So just watching stuff like that, every game matters. So yeah.
Jordan, thank you very much. Thank you. I really plan as much. So I just wanted to get more experience under my belt. So I can bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot of these. One of those younger guys, we're seeing it out here. It's the first time I've scored all those last years. What have you seen from Lill? I'm actually a real forgot about it because he was hurt. Now he's running almost a second man out behind you and Ty. What have you seen from Lill? Well, it was a workhorse. He goes, stay quiet, you go work hard. And that's what I love about him. He focuses, he don't really talk much. He's going to get the job done, do a job right. He rarely has any mistakes. What would be a successful season? A national championship? A ring? When all the games we don't want to lose anything, we got a mindset that we can't be beat. And we just got to go show it. That mindset different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year. This year even more so, you guys all come back for this. You guys have all decided like enough as enough.
Does that keep feeling different? Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. We got to go bigger, go home and we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute. You know what I mean? You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that, hey, you guys want to win a national championship? But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year. Like you're that close. So I'm saying we just like work harder. That's kind of coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares. Work harder.
Is that as you get older, you're going to learn. I thought that was working hard, but then you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought, fresh me, I was working as hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. If the stamina is a 60, then the answer to what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder in shape. It's been a thing. The idea of a potential 16 or 17 year old season. I've heard about that idea.
There's a making nervous about can you last that long? Really? I think I can tell that I've been there. I think I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody's like, oh, line, D line. We got to get those younger guys to play. You know, get that pieces on the D line and all line and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of that, I'm not playing that long. I'm not playing that long. If you like playing that long, last year because I don't know. I don't know if any of us were really expected to be playing that long. Uh, yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a lot. Uh, I thought like there are no moments you know I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame, too, or North. Those kind of games. Of course, I want to be because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald is he got the key. You guys in a second. Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac animal. Y'all, you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time.
He's just, he's growing right now. He has to work at the, he just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 6th or you're 327, he's 326. Yeah, he's, I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you older guys. There's a large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in your back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right, burn all season so they can play. And not just play, they want to like contribute, like make plays, tackle the sex. It seems like these guys get bigger. Each one of the first in the class is bigger and bigger. Do those guys kind of, those are going to kind of while you're in the cell? Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes.
And they all work hard. I've only seen much of some of the day too when I'm passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined. I can say that. It looks like they're ready to work with me. How important this is. It feels like there's a lot of great defenses that you have big, athletic defensive tactics that you can eat up space, but also move, you know, right? That is that. Is that an inquiring maybe for a great defense to have guys like you that have some balls, but also a great senior? I think that is definitely. I think if you look at the last couple of national champions and winners, like Team up North, they got two good detacles, two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacles. I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about that, they're almost defined by the defense attack. It's like, what's Georgia, Jordan Davis and Daniel Carter? What's Michigan? It's Chris Jenkins. How are the four questions for you guys?
It is funny like how, I mean, you understand this is your play. I feel like some time I don't know, are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah. In the combine, you see in those guys, they're moving four to four, seven, eights and things like that. And when you think about those freakish attack attacks, how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to get a big head, but you know. I watch the comment. I watch the dude do the drills. I have a tape here, you're like, you're looking at my film. So I think I'm going to do it all the time. Tyler, can you become like a artist that comes to the bad end of passes? Yeah. Think of ways to have your things. When you're going, spring practice, you're not doing a bunch of 11 on 11. That's gross. Do you have like a gold one, I don't remember how many I've lost.
You have gold. I'm 35. How many do you want to have? I mean as many as I can have, I think I have more than that. But I think he said it. I think they didn't count some of them. And some of them were like just listed. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's goes big and what we do is a D line, you know. Just affecting the quarter of that is anywhere you can. It's just great for the defense. You know, just that little thing you cover in his eye, you know, he might throw it. A little bit to the left to our player. So, so it's something that you really, really have to work on. You can do that. What you can do. It's a theory that's one of the things that you maybe worked on the most. You can bring your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that passes down. It takes a few days. We don't have that. It's a strategy. We're kind of kind of expected for things. I think I just have like an eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just seeing my load up. I just try to get in his way. And sometimes he throws it to me. I don't know. I hear it's either you like to be a high state quarterback. You're not going to be a bad dog passes. I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better.
That's a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs. You got to go right now. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey auto. He was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. Who's the best back in this draft? Best back in this draft. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all decision. Playing with Will Howard. When I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard man. He's just such a great lead. Such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold, man. He was just always calm and relaxed, man. He just the leader that he was, man. That's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's shoot. He's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock.
I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people's man. He's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man. He's mature. And so man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so man. Yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands. Yeah, Coach Hardline, man. He's full of energy man. And he's creative as well. You know, I'm just learning from him as well, you know, I'm trying to run more routes and to run more outside the backfield was being able to learn from Coach Hartline. And so he's definitely creative at what he does and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think that would do really good. Just intensity, man. And since he got the playoffs, every game, man, it's like the intensity got higher and higher. And so being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing even if it's not the playoffs.
Just every game and intensity keeps getting higher and higher. And so yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work. Just like Ohio State, you know, I definitely feel like Ohio State, they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I know I took a couple of days off after the national championship and then shoot right after that. I'm writing right in sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at your morph performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man, they did a really good job. The bucket near, no, I haven't.
Tampa, Tampa, Tampa nice. This is nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. I get many awesome people. The 40 to broad and avert. Yeah. Yeah. No, man. It's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well. And so I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. It's a, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit, you know, and so I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that, but I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brothers, though, man, making sure the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed.
In my game, you can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe it's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better. I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year. And so I just want to continue to build on that. Yes, I did. Yes, I did. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I've been coming here. Shoot, yeah, man, I've been coming here great, great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man, and he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. Yeah. Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield, you know,
and man and man coverage, you're getting on that linebacker. And so. Yeah, I say to man, the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man, and the way that man he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week, you know, every practice, you know, he's working hard, you know, even shoot it. I don't know, every good, I think he had it. Every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely man. He's going to be a special player, man. He really is. Man, a lot of ups and downs, man, it's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better.
It's just, I'm not have something to lean on now, you know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to, you know, you can run to people, but they still can't. It's not too much. They can't truly help you. But I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so, being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments where it's tough, you know, where it's slow. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort, you know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't, you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so... Which aspect do you do those other individuals that you want to come from being around power to Him? Um, man, those guys have such a great mentality, man.
I just really love their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham and Tallahdee, man, that boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know, you see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, still farming somebody and she would just gain a 10. And so... I think, yeah, man, I think it just like... He's just gifted, man, too, beyond. And he's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong and so, you know, he's able to do those things. And so, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quincham, you know, I want to look at his game and it's like, man, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. Julian Sand. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man.
He's so, so accurate and so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, container grow as a leader, container grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for how I stay. I know just the quarterback position. I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask Julian Sand as well, is to beat that vocal leader and lead the offense and lead the team. Yeah, that's right. Shoot, man, he has, he has a build like JK Dobbins. And I kind of see them, you know, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his none. A lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is great. I remember before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back.
And I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same. And so, appreciate you all. Yeah, I'll be going. This. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Well, I got coming in last year. I knew the road. So I just attacked every day really the same way. It's technically the van der Repp. Physically, how different are you? Weight wise, body wise, all that from the year. Oh, I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240, you know, like 240, 4 right now. Last year, I played it like 236, 237. What does it feel like at 244? I feel like almost a different machine out there. Yeah. What does it feel like to be running around out there like you are, but with more, more back? I just feel like I'm like, like, like more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all blocks better. It's a big. No. Is it daunting? Maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year instead of what you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more. I just got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps. So, I would describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-stand point.
Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My, I'm ready for it. The text is open, it's a rematch, but it's not really two different teams compared to the last time we all played and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the, where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been, we've been emphasizing it a lot and we know what we got coming, so we know what we got to do. We've been prepared for it. I already just probably worked today. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman, like he ended up here in the book. He stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy, like he saw it on the saw line too. I said you're ready. Like I know you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Did you feel yourself becoming more and more ready? So where did the team needed from you? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was, just whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing?
Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. What's the difference between feeling this year and then last year? I asked a whole more time. How different is that responsibility? That should be that you should just be emotional. That's one last year. Who knew you were a homemaker? I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year, but I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was attention over everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. What word? I say describe like when you think of me, you think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet. I don't really have bullet.
I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. You like one of my body? No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but I'm not saying that the Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's like think of fit me because I just like the defense. I feel like we got like you said, we got a lot of freedom and we're moving around a lot. A lot of the times is like, no, I don't know. I don't really know the answer that. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like, I just like it's deep. I like how it's pretty deep is I like what you got going on. I wanted to my sad. I was kind of like happy for me. That's what you want.
All right. That's my dog. I'll say yeah, kind of missing a little bit, but I'm happy for you. I don't think you go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship. You guys will win your own. How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and along the summer year. Your classmates. Yeah, I do feel like. Yeah, I do feel like I did win a national championship, but like you said, my role wasn't same as how it's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling with me beyond feel a lot more place. That's great. Well, thank you very much. I feel like I'm so I feed and I'm actually used to it. That you need right now. Sometimes I'm still sometimes like basketball. I want to be on that just like the fed, but you know, you got to stay. Stay square in some parts. Exactly. Yeah, that's a very question. I mean, I feel like these two can enter that for the beer.
I know I think KJ and Nero can answer that. Well, I don't know what to say about that. What do you guys think? What do you guys think? I don't know. I go against here today. No. This man is strong. Right? I'm talking about the beer. I'm talking about the beer. You know, you can just do a thing. He's like, he's really fast. Just the whole way I'm shaking his hand. And he got the grip. He doesn't give up on the playing. Like you said, he's going to go in and watch the film. He's going to make a day with the better man. Just see the 100 beer man. From like this one. So now it's not even considered a beer but like a game. You know, can you just follow us around or be ready? He's like a coach, man. He's like a coach. Chip Kelly's in fourths. Change. You're my. He's not like a coach, man. He's not like a coach. Chip Kelly's in fourths. Change. You're mine. About maybe like the idea of tack over his guard. Because obviously his offensive predilection is for like offensive line play. Hey, you can. Apart from you settle in the guard. That's um, I want to say. Maybe I don't know, but I mean, when I'm when I first heard he got the job, I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's.
The tempo I can run with the tempo. You know, I mean, I'm playing basketball all life instead of football and I feel like. Just the fast pace often so we're running really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw a football exercise. But can you kick a football 75 years of wake up? No. Probably question. Lincoln, what was your question? How is your. Your roommate. He's a blessing man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. What's the name? His name's Lincoln. He's a clean hoes. He's a cleaner. Oh, he's a cleaner. I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of pick each other's roomies because we're very clean and we don't like our burns really messy. Well, it's true though. It's the truth. It's a good one pretty clean stuff. Luke, are you still a cross training at Tag Bullsum or if you just been all guard this break? Oh, so far I've been all guard. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking it practice by practice. I could end up being back at Tag Bullsum, but I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next one is fine.
What do you want to do? Yeah. Oh, that means a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here. You spend a dream just being in Ohio kid. I'm from a Ohio kid's perspective. I mean, that's the biggest switch possible. I would have thought it would be pretty cool. What was it like just last year at first game getting on the field for the first time? It didn't feel like it was going to be a weird answer, but it didn't feel like I was playing a game yet. That made sense. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness and no stress and nothing really. I just went in that first game. I was like, shoot out in here now. It's time to roll. You know, it didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't even hit me after. I was like, my mom was like, what would you feel there? And if like getting out there at Indiana, I was just like, honestly, I don't know. I felt less nervous than I did in high school and it makes no sense. What do you feel about the game? A lot. I mean, I'm learning from Josh Aniston. I think Friars was one of my biggest role models here. It was my big brother. My first game.
Tell him I'm a Padea. No, I'm a Padea. Okay. No. Yeah. So yeah, Padea and Austin, those are my guys, man. I mean, even Miles too. I mean, all three of them. Those are my roommates. They're progressing every day as well. I'm excited to see where they can get to. I'm excited to play with them. Turn off the camera. Oh, yeah, you know, it's been really helpful. You know, just keep in my mind just settled and straightforward on the next play. What do you think the biggest stuff is? It's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to take insisted in my work. I think that's the biggest thing for me is just taking insisted and worry about the next play. So you got it from the guy you were in the play. Yeah. Wow, that's weird. Yeah, I mean, I guess they didn't want to get my nerves up, but like I was ready. I mean, I did, I took most of the ones. That's all camping. I mean, I was already, I was pretty much it. Yeah. I wasn't really nervous. It started the game. What was his advice to you? Yeah.
He said, you got it. You mean, you're going against Ty League and Ty, every day in practice, I mean, it's not different. Almost different. You now, though, do we tend to get two starts in the game? As a player, you know, having that under your belt. I mean, I'm more confident. I know what's going on. I can see, like, I can see what's going on with the defense. I know what's going on. I know what's coming. I mean, I understand the game's a lot better than what it was. I don't say that last year. Which adds up to what? Fast, the start, the end, etc. Yeah. You playing with that dust for a while. I mean, if we get out early, it's get the defense change in place. It's changing their defense. You start fast. I mean, they're trying to get the call in the play. But you start fast. I'm not going back. We'll trust a lot of touchdowns. Yeah, of course, Dave is pretty much dead, though. You deserve to play, man. You know, let's come to our last. But will you expect this week in terms of your role? Um, wherever they need me, if it's left right, wherever it's I need to go in, I go in and go to the box to do the front of me. I'll play in tackle. Um, took me back to high school days, but I should back in high school.
I wasn't really random ball, wasn't really into him passes. But it was fun. Change. You have my, made my feet better, I would say. How confident you feel like you could play there if you need me? If they want me there, I guess I'll play there. I mean, they need me, they need me. Also in the illness that swept through the office of the line room. A lot of times coaches and players have said that I was still relying for the groom, you know, getting you experience among others. What was that like for you and double-dipping, playing some tag with playing some guard, the same practice. Um, it was based like a group effort like for me, you know, we had guys out and we just had to go back practice. Um, all five guys is wherever they were playing. We just got to go. How much of that accelerate your development, like that time with the ones you were actually playing? They really said it did. Um, I was jumped in there. I didn't really know. So we like wanted to practice with practices, but like after those, I was like,
I was good. You know, my confidence grew. Um, yeah. It seemed like there was sort of a settling in process for you and the Akron game, maybe play got better if the game went on and it really needs to, especially in the ground game, things seem to take off. But was there a moment when it clicked on the field for you? Like was there nerves and then a time of settling in? I guess how, take me through kind of that first game mentally. Yeah. Um, first game, obviously you can have nerves for the first time, so I'm sorry. But then like after the first couple of plays, meaning I'm nerves naturally. So that's the first couple of play that I was good. I was just rolling. Also, it's a weird game. I was trying to try to play in real life. It was also the first start. Yeah. Um, you, yeah. It's, but like, I prepared well. Um, and camp and practice all week. And I was, I was ready. Um, yeah. I have two multi-year starters. I did a lot. I mean, I couldn't ask them, hey, what we got here, but I was prepared well.
I mean, I was telling Jimmy and said, like, hey, we're like a classroom. I'll be emotional. I was like, what's the guy from Ohio? What does it mean to start a game? Um, it was always my dream to come here and play and start. And having that played me, I just got to keep going, keep building those days. And go to the games and keep building. What a much younger Austin, though, you do it. People from you with that. Uh, no, not, I don't think. Even I told him, like, when I asked him, yeah, younger self, even committed here, I wouldn't believe that that. Now I have a couple of starts. Yeah. Awesome. Has this happened faster than you? I think we're going to come here with the players. I guess you're technically a sophomore. You can play as a richer question. No, I knew that year two. I was going to see you some playing time. Now starting week one year two, I didn't see that, but like I was ready in spring ball. I knew I was going, I was going to play some soccer.
But what does it mean to you to not only get the opportunities to play, but like you played well enough now. Coaching staff trust you. Yeah, they put it out there. Whatever the situation was. That earned that so early on the year. I guess it shows like my preparation, my hard work, and just everything I put into this. And I just finally show up on a field. There are moments, the top season, the end of the spring, and the end of the camp. I'm going to realize that you could play at this high level, high up with the ones, you know, if you need to. Yeah, but definitely was in a training camp. I mean, black and highly can tie every day. It feels a lot of confidence in doing it well and not like getting balled or anything. There is defensive tag wasn't that easy. Hero in Jason Moore in Taiwan, all those guys. Pretty much anyone on the deepened line gets your face all the time. And Kay and Mag is well. Yeah. We've put a lot of them on. I've worked with Paul about the stability.
That was really a lot. How much can he help you? He helped me a lot. And I'm proud that he's our starting center and not someone else's. But I mean, he's like the captain of the line. He's another voice on the line with guys like Josh Fryer and Josh Simmons, Donnie and Tiger. That means another voice and another captain on the line. What ways of having the men and women with this much experience help? During the year in the middle of the month. He can tell you before the play was going on. How to block someone. What you need to do. It helps a lot. Tiger is talking about how calm he is. How much does that fit in between you and the guys who's kind of been there in season? It makes us more calm. Especially me and Tay, those are the first stars. So we were up here. What Seth, he brought us down. We were like five. Our emotions weren't high.
Is that like something he tells you? Is that something you pick up on by how he's acting? How do you kind of mean sense what he's trying to do? It's by how he's acting. And what I mean him when we're on the side of him, both Josh Donnie, like he was telling us, like, hey, we're cool. Like we got it. But it's pretty much like everyone. Oh cool group. How much do that? As a first time starter, how much did you end that? Me a lot. That was my first time ever using iPads. We didn't use the iPads in high school. So I like trying to remember the defense. You can just come on a silent and bring up a play and get help. That's really nice. Probably the first or second after the, I thought we'd say all right. Awesome. Thank you very much. It seems like training part is a part of the acceptable thing. They're getting bigger and stronger. It's like the culture part. Yeah. How much of a fact is that in a part of your team?
It's also, it's a lot. I mean, I feel like you can't be able to transform your body like I have or like people here come and do that without having that mentality part with it. It's like we always talk about competitions here and our culture is fight. So we're always here to compete. I feel like that is just, that's what gets you in this mindset. When you talk about that transformation, can you just give us a little sense maybe with numbers or body fat or like what you do with the weight group? How big is that transformation that feel? I don't have really specific numbers, but I just like, it's more just like I can just, I feel like feeling when I'm playing. I remember how I felt the play when I just got here and now I know how it feels to play like, like just today. Like it feels physically different on my body. It's like, it's, I'm getting used to it. That makes sense. That's what you guys are doing. I can't imagine feeling like that.
Padilla also said about you that you are just a completely different guy from last year. We're here to work this year. Let's get it done. So you're here? Do you feel like you weren't at that place mentally? I think I was, but I think I had some, I would say like, kind of like confidence issues, like I was just, but you know, I mean, I work past it and I know I can, I know why I am and I know I can be here. So, if you have confidence issues, how do you get through it? Is it yourself, is it teammates, is there someone in your family that makes you believe that you can do it? I know I can do it. It's not like that's, those are all, it's all in the past now. Did the past play time in a very obvious opportunity? Guys had the stuff up with you on the business. That helped you crank over that confidence issue there because it's now a memory of your opportunity. So, kind of, it's just like, just, I mean, it's just, just being here.
Like, I feel like being here every day, working with the guys every day, it's just like, you know, you become this person that you might not have like, you might not have felt like you were before you were. Like, you were before that, but like, coming here, working every day, stacking these days, like, like, you know, I mean, I just feel like I realized who I am and I know what I can do now. Well, I wanted to maybe open up for my future, but are you, as I said, you kind of like, convince yourself that you actually belong here in the beginning. I knew, I knew I could play here. I mean, it's just, it was like the, like, I just, I don't know how to explain it. I just, like, I've always known I could play here. It's just, I'm just, like, let's go. Like, I'm ready to, like, I'm ready to attack. What are guys to do to help you to figure that out? For sure, I think KJ was a big influence, Ty Hamilton, Ty League, they all, they all helped me a bunch last year, kind of just pushing through, you know.
I really plan as much, so I just wanted to get, like, more experience under my belt. So I can, you know, bring the other guys with me because I've been through a lot of good. One of those younger guys we're seeing right here, it's the first time I've heard all of them last year, it's the first time I've seen it. What have you seen from Lill? I've kind of felt like I shouldn't be all forgot about it because he's heard it. Now he's running, you know, almost a second man up behind you and Ty. What have you seen in your memory? He's a workhorse, he goes, stay quiet, you go and work hard. And that's all I love about him. He focuses, he don't really talk much. He's going to get a job done, do a job right, really has any mistakes. What would be a success in the season? The National Championship? A ring, win, all the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't be beat, and we just got to go show it. That mindset is different. It seems like you guys expect the National Championship every year, this year even more so. You guys have all come back for this, you guys have all decided that that is not for you. Because that is to keep feeling different, or it's not really any difference, it's just the same work.
It's definitely a difference, everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this, so we got to go bigger, go home, and we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan, but when you look at what they did, they won the National Championship, and you guys took them down to the final minute. You were right there, something goes a little different, you guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that, hey, you guys want to win a National Championship, but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the National Championship last year, like you're that close. So I'm saying, we just like work harder, that's kind of a coach makes a saying, nobody cares, just work harder. Like those, you know, when we played Georgia, it's the same thing. Last play, you know, they went on the win in 90s, so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season, I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're back close against the last two national titles. Of course, as you know, it's frustrating, but you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it.
You know, come back and work harder, do things better than you did last year, and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn, and I thought that was working hard, but then you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing? Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought freshman year I was working. It's hard as I could, but now I look back at it, I really wasn't working hard at all, compared to what I'm doing now, so just to learn anything. If the stamina is 16, then what do you need it to be to be your best? It is at 75, is it? 80, 85? I mean, I can, it's all on me. I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder. It's been a fact. The idea of a potential is 16 or 17 or 17. What's the most exciting about that idea that makes you nervous about, can you last that long? I think, I think we, I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us.
We can't play 50 stamps a game. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody, like online, we got to get those younger guys to play, you know. Get that pieces on the D-line and online, and everywhere else, so we can last that long. Did you like playing that many snaps again last year? I don't know. I don't know if anyone else would really expect to be playing that many snaps. Yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought like there are no moments you know, I can go sit down or something, but we're playing them big games, like, you know, Notre Dame too or North, those kind of games. Of course, I want to be, because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about taking McDonald's, you got it, you got some little stuff again. Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal. Y'all, you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's grown right now. He has to work, I think. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook, things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 6th, 3rd, 3rd, 27th, 3rd, 26th.
Yeah, I kind of look at him like my junior, but, you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's just got to develop more and get in the playbook. So really a lot on you, older guys, there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back, is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right, throwing all season so they can play. And not just play, they want to like contribute, like make plays, tackles, sex. It seems like these guys get bigger each one of the freshmen class. Do those guys kind of, it doesn't kind of allow you to solve the first? Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes and they all work hard. I've only seen much of some of the day too. I'm not bad at one, but throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined. I'd say that. And it looks like they're ready to work with me. I think that is definitely, I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners, like Team on North, they got two good, uh, detaco, two athletic detacles.
I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on a big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, they won't define by the defense. What's George, Jordan Davis and James Carter? Let's Michigan is Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions for you. How, I mean, you understand this as you play it, but I feel like sometimes I don't know. Are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving forward to 478 and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about this freakish tackle, how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch the come on. I watch it. Do the drills. I have to see you like looking like my film. So I think I'm up there with all this.
Do you become like a artist who comes to batting up passes the way? I mean, you're going to bring practice. You're not doing as much a weapon. I mean, is many of us have, I think I am. I think I have more than that. But I think they're counting. I think they're counting some of them. And some of them are like just listed. So, but I think we work on Joe's match in the hand. I think that goes big. What we do is a deal on, you know, just affecting the quarter of the against anyway you can. It's just great for the defense. You know, just that little thing covering his eye. You know, he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player. So it's something that you really, really have to work on. It's one of the things that you've worked on the most. There are a few guys that I've seen. Oh, that passes. We don't have to ask.
I think I just have like a eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just I see him. I load up. I just try to get his ways. And sometimes he's just throws it to me. I'm here to do it to the high state quarterbacks. I mean, they get frustrated by you know, we're team. We're just getting better. Yeah, a lot of a lot of different backs. Man, they just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you. I'll give you one. I would say, say, quan, Gibbs and. I like McCaffrey auto. He was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. Best back in this drive. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all decision. Playing well. How are when I'm going to remember most.
We're a Howard man. He's just such a great lead. Such a great leader man. It's just like a moments where you know, usually a lot of players they fold. He was just always calm and relaxed. Man, he just the leader that he was. That's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's shoot. He's going to be really good. He's on. Coach lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people's man. He's smart. The way that he goes about his business. He's mature and so man. He's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so man, yeah, definitely Ohio State. You know, that running back room is in great hands. Yeah. Coach Coach Hartline, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well. You know, I'm just learning from him as well. You know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield.
But to learn from coach Hartline. And so he's definitely creative at what he's he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think that do really good. Just intensity, man. And since he got the playoffs, every game. And it's like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able. I know in the lead. It's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every every game. And the intensity keeps getting higher and higher. And so, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it. You know, each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State. You know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them. You know, for the NFL. And so yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship.
And then shoot right after that. I'm writing sample Florida. And I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at your birth performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man. They did a really good job. The Bucking Nears. No, I haven't. Temple of Tampa. Tampa, nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and avert. Yeah. Yeah. No, man. It's really all about technique. And then it's about mindset as well. And so I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receiver. So I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked.
I told Will I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit. And so I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that. But I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's though, man, making sure the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you've been working on right now? You know, you know, you can't really work on this. You know, in all season, I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run. You know, maybe it's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so that's I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better. I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year. And so I just want to continue to build on that. Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So, you could play ball to look like now, but tomorrow, you get back in nursing and you can play ball with him. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I haven't come here.
Shoot, yeah, man, I haven't come here great, great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. Yeah, inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I say the next one is probably just an option route out of the backfield. You know, a man and man coverage, you're getting on that linebacker. So, yeah, I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man, and the way that man he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week, you know, every practice, you know, he's working hard, you know, even shoot. I don't know, every good, I think he had every game was a good game for him, man.
And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day, he's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely man, he's going to be a special player, man. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort, you know. Even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't, you can't explain.
It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so... The back of the front of the entrance of power in judgment is through what effect does. Which aspect, the future, those other individuals that you run to, the Bible, are being around power and... Um... Man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. Am I just really loved their mentality? Especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quenchon mentality, man. That boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know. You see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, still farming somebody, and shoot, it's a game to 10. And so... You some of the things he does, he just realizes two different things actually. Yeah. Shoot, I think... Yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, to be honest.
He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong, and so, you know, he's able to do those things. So, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game, and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quenchon. You know, I want to look at his game, and it's like, man, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. What's your last speech? Julian Sand. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so accurate, and so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, container grow as a leader, container grow as a player, and so he's going to be really good for a high state. I know just the quarterback position. I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've definitely been vocal, and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask Julian Sand as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead the offense and lead the team. Thanks, guys. Thanks, guys.
Shoot, man, he has a build like JK Dobbins, and I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well. Appreciate you all. Yeah, I'll be going. This.
Yeah. Yeah.
Well, I got coming in last year. I knew we were all so I just tacked every day really the same way. It's taking advantage very well. Physically, how different are you? Weight wise, body wise on that from the year. I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240. You know, like 244 right now. Last year, I played it like 236 to 37. What does it feel like a 244 or a belt? You feel like an almost a different machine out there. Yeah, like what does it feel like? I'm just running around out there like you are, but with more, more back. I just feel like I'm like, like, like more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all the blocks better. It's big. Yeah. You see, don't think, maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year. And you played quite a bit last year instead of what you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more. I think you're ready to just play 30 more snaps. So, but are you, are you, how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8.
Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My, I'm ready for it. The Texas opener is a rematch, so it's good, but it's not really two different teams. The better the last time you all played and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the, where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming, so we know we got to do, we're prepared for it. Already this probably work today. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman like he ended here in the book. He studied in like he advanced and his measurements crazy. Like he saw like the saw line to. Well, you said you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was, just whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing?
Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling this year than last season. Asked a one more time. How different is that response? That's just the most great callback. If it was last year, you knew you were a homemaker. I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was intentional with everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Some reason I'm saying this. How do you do that? It won't work? How's everybody working? I say... describe my game. I say, when you think of me, you think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet.
I don't really know bullet. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. No, I ain't got to be my nickname. But... I'm not saying that the nickname... Oh yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's it. How do you feel about the first question of a nutritious style? And how it's free? How does that fit you? And what are you and your work about? The whole aim in that kind of style? I think it fit me because... I don't know, I just like the defense. I feel like we got... Like you said, we got a lot of freedom. We're moving around a lot. A lot of the times is like... You know, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's okay. You can just go on your instincts. A little bit more, baby. And it's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on. But it's like... I just like the defense. I like how the pressure defense. I like what you got going on. What was it, Sadlin? CJ left the way. Yeah. Uh... No, I wanted to say that. I was kind of like happy for you. Yeah.
That's what you want. No. All right. No, that's my dog. I'm kind of missing a little bit, but yeah, I'm happy for you. Well, don't think... Go ahead one last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for... I don't know. That wasn't maybe your national championship you guys were going around. How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and along the summer year, your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like... I did win a national championship, but like you said, my role wasn't the same as how it's going to be this year. So, yeah, I definitely want to go get another one experienced that feeling. Maybe on the field, a lot more place. Great. Oh, Bill, thank you very much. Thanks, I got you. You need to offense compared to NFL. Especially with the way he uses receivers. How do you anticipate your role? Changing it, how do you view the offense from a receiver perspective? Yeah. I mean, I think he likes to really push the ball down the field. He likes to be balanced.
He likes to give different looks to a difference. You know, we're going to not to try to get too much into it, but you know, we're going to use some motion, move some guys around and things of that nature. I think for myself, I feel comfortable playing any of the positions that is asked whether it's the slot, the outside positions, and unique part about our offense is, I don't think necessarily you play the X or the Z because the pit on the formation of the hash, you can be the opposite. You can be the X, but then you're to the field now you're the Z. So you got to really learn the entire concept and know where you're out in the field, which I think makes everybody smarter players because you don't pigeonhole yourself, I just play X. You know, I only know this position. Like you get in two minutes, you're the Z. Now you got to know what to do. You may have the clear out route or you may have the backside dig. Like you got to know what you're doing. So I think he doesn't just say like we're going to do this offense. He's really trying to create an offense that pits our personnel really well. That field boundary thing. Yeah.
That's the thing in college, but it seems like it's more unique to clip. Is that something you're used to seeing in other offenses? Yeah, definitely. I mean, I think if I'm on the left hash, like technically I'm the X, you know, I'm in the boundary, but if we're on the right hash, I'm still on the left side. I'm really the Z in the concept because I'm to the field, I'm to the strength of the tight end. So I've been in offenses like it's similar like that before. And you know, I just think he, he, one thing I think that's really stood out as the compliments of our routes that we have so far. I feel like we have a chance to really run similar stems, but there's different routes off those stems and things like that, which I think for receiver like myself who you get, you know, a really good look at DBs and they study your film, they study your splits, like having routes that look the same, but break off a different, different angles is extremely important because it feels like you have some versatility in your back to go out with versus like you got this hit you again, you're back side, like that's all you got, you know what I mean?
So, yeah, he's just been a really good player's person to work with and he's been really communicative with the leaders and how we want this offense to look like in some of the ideas that we may have as well. So, it's been a really cool transition. You talk about the transitions, you've learned offense in three years, probably your fourth and sixth years. How do you not kind of build up some barriers? Yeah, man, I got to do this again. Right. I think, you know, human nature is always a factor in whatever you do in life, but I think I try to make a conscious choice of coming in with a new year mentality each and every year. I think it's easy because we've had so many changes and it's been great working with Marcus and Jaden and Jeff and Sam, all of everybody, like it's been great with working with all the quarterbacks and I just have a mentality of not really being complacent. Like I try to really focus on the things that I can come back better at this year and I've been working my, my butt off to do that.
I think the easy thing and when I was younger, you're like, dang, you just want that consistency. You know what I mean? You want that something you could depend on, but life isn't always like that. So, I've been reinvigorated because of just the energy that DQ brings into our building each and every day and the coaches as well. Like it's fun competing, you know what I mean? And sometimes I could get lost in the grind, but I think the reason why you make it here at this level is because you fall in love with the competition of it. And I think the competition brings the success because that is really where you, the iron truly sharpens iron. So, you know, other guys are going to make plays, but when you get excited to go in there and know that the next day we're going to go right back after the defense. For myself, I'm just looking forward to continue to grow with the quarterbacks that we have. I'm in year six now, which is extreme blessing and leader, one of the leaders in our room and I just try to take the bull by the horns with that.
And so, that's really been my focus and you know, I'm excited for another year. To us, it's looked like you're being more vocal on the sidelines to help young guys. Definitely. Something you decided this offseason or? I think that's been a part of my maturation process as a leader. I've always seen myself as somebody that was a leader by example. But from coaches and other teammates I've had over the years, guys like to hear what I have to say for whatever reason sometimes. You know, and I think the biggest thing where I've tried to figure out where I fit in with my vocal leadership is I never wanted to be like a dictator. You know what I mean? I never wanted to tell guys what to do or be a yellow or things like that. Like when I say something, I wanted to have power. I wanted to have meaning. And I hope, you know, the guys would feel the same way if they were to ask them that question. Because I want to see all these guys win, man. Like it's hard to make it in this league and stay in a career. And so, anyway, I could help the receivers, the DBs. I'm talking to some alignment.
Johnny, who's who's rehabbing his foot. You know what I mean? Like everybody has a role and everybody has a different story and path. And so if I could share what I've been through my testimony to help them or do things that kind of slow down the process, I'm going to try to do that because we need everybody from the rookies to the 10 year vets to make this thing work. So more so I try to speak to what I know. And really those honest conversations that I try to have with guys, what they know, I'm coming from a good place. And I think I'm not the type of guy where I'm just going to talk at them. Like if they see something, like I could take a coaching point from Luke McCaffrey. I could take a coaching point from Deami from Jahan from Marcus from anybody. You know, like I think that's what makes you a great player when you can really be coachable from anybody and not take it from a personal standpoint. Hi. Good. Going back to what you were saying about Cliff and how was he as a teacher in teaching all this?
Yeah, I mean, I think he does a really great job of making things simple, first and foremost. He doesn't overcoach. And I think that's the trust that he has in our group and his coaches, our position coaches to fill in the details. So we'll have an install meeting. And it'll be a good amount of time. But then our position coaches will have time and we'll make it specific to that position. And so then we'll come in and have a walkthrough. And then after that, we'll have another walkthrough. And so I don't think there's been a time where I've come out here and I'm kind of worried about what I got. You know what I mean? And when you get into certain offices, there could be so many details where you could be overwhelmed. And I think then it forces kind of separates guys in a sense that like one guy may study more than another guy. But when you have these sessions that we have where we're having an installs in the morning, we're having two walkthroughs and then we're coming on the field and doing it. Like I think you notice a lot of guys are playing a lot faster and more confident because he's keeping it simple. But also he's very particular in what he's expecting. But it's not a lot. So there's not a pressure of to get it right. But at the same time, you know it's expected of you.
And you know you're going to have the tools given to you to be successful out there on the field. And this offseason, just the totality of change from front office players coaches, the turf field. Yeah. What does that been like for you just to see what's going on? It's been fun. You know I think from Mr. Harrison, the entire ownership group down to Adam Peters, down to DQ, down to Jada, who he drafted and bringing in Marcus and Jeff and all those guys. Down to leaders, we have on our team. I think it was extremely specific on the way they tried to build this thing going into this year. First having the right people, bringing in leaders, bringing in guys who love to compete. First thing that DQ said when he came here was in his first meeting like if you love to compete, this is going to be the place for you. And I love it. You know what I mean? I love bags and going at it with the DBS every day. Like the little mundane stuff can seem a little boring. But I think that was where you make the gains during the offseason. Where you're really focused on, hey, I'm going to give all I got for this day and I'm going to get better.
And then I'm going to learn from the film and come back tomorrow and ready to do it again. And he also understands like the benefits of having breaks. He's given us breaks. We've had weeks off here in the other week and composed ourselves. But then come back and give it all we got. You know what I mean? And when you got a coach that understands the physicality of an entire season where you guys do need breaks by the same time we're going to get after it. It makes it fun as a leader because you can take that to your room and be like, yo, we got these, we got this week. You know what I mean? That's extremely important. But you know we have this little break coming up where you're going to get your your mind and your body and your soul right. So coming into this season, I'm really optimistic of what we can be this year. And I think it started with the foundation that the ownership group and the entire staff has built. And now it's on myself as a leader to continue to hone that in into the locker room. But I think it's great because we have so many great leaders from all across the league who have won and had we got Bobby Wagner in there. You know what I mean? I asked a hall of fame or so like, you know, being able to have kind of guys like that that you can lean on that can sometimes take over that leadership role where it doesn't fall on one person.
I think it's extremely refreshing and knowing that everybody's on the same page and the message is the same allows you to go out there with confidence and always expected. Teri, you seem to spend many of your off seasons learning about things beyond football, hobbies, what have you, did you do anything to this off season so far? Hobbies are increasing your knowledge of the world around you. Let's go question. Play a lot of golf. That day just keeps my competitive juices flowing. Planting the wedding. That's going well. And I just been grinding like, honestly, you know, I've been hungry this all season. I started working out, you know, pretty early and you start to see guys like coming back and it's just fun to like to be here and compete and feel like everybody's on the same page, you know what I mean? And so for me, I'm a grind every off season, but just this one just feels like it's the start of something new and special and the foundation of is extremely important and to be a part of that to have a hand in that.
You know, it's an honor, you know, and I put a lot of expectation on myself to come out here and be the guy that I know I'm capable of and also like taking the next step and being somebody that our quarterbacks that can trust and believe in. So this all season was pretty simple for me. It was just really about, you know, working and grinding and getting better. And so far, I know we haven't seen everything but in terms of his arm strength, the throws, he's making anything surprising so far about the types of his ability in that regard. Definitely. I think after the second or third crosser that he threw, I started telling receivers like, hey, you got to get your head around, you know what I mean? Because again, each quarterback throws the ball definitely and sees the field differently. Sometimes on crossers, a lot of quarterbacks may like to see you cross the ball and get into that open zone over there if it's a man flattened off. They like to see you get open where him. He has a really good anticipation over the middle of the field where he can make those throws and give you a chance to catch and run.
And he's really accountable too. Like we had a play today where he felt like he missed me and, you know, it's not a big deal at all. I can talk to him and I can talk to those things and there's been a play that I've talked to him about. I could do a better job. But again, like that open that open form of communication from a rookie, I think is very rare. And I think it speaks to the confidence he knows who he is, but he's also not afraid to say when he's wrong and he knows he needs room to improve. But his touch on the deep balls is amazing. You know, I love getting extra reps after practice with him. We're just catching the top end of a deep ball. That's big for me. You know, I mean, I get to track the ball over my shoulder and it's big for him to be able to get used to dropping the ball in the bucket. But he just naturally has an ability to throw the ball. He sees the windows really well. And now he's just, you know, continue to get adjusted to the speed in the past rush. I think he's these reps that he's getting are unbelievable during 11 or 11 because he's getting the field pain and Allen and DA and Cleveland Farrow. We got some dogs up there who are going to come after him. You know what I mean? And we got some great guys up front who are going to protect them.
And so these reps, I feel like are even better than just seven on seven. Seven on seven, I think he could do it in the sleep to be fair. Like he throws the ball really well. But when you get this 11 on 11, two minute drill, you're putting them in game like situations. And I'm looking them in his eye. I'm like, we play real ball now. Like we, we, we plan. You know what I mean? You just see no, no anxiousness in his game and his demeanor, which is extremely exciting. And then, you know, he's extremely lighthearted. And he's always smiling. So he's joking with lime and D line. He's just cool with everybody. And like I said, like for a rookie quarterback to come in like that, where guys are gravitating to him. And he's not afraid to be who he is. That's dope. I think he has a bright future for himself. The tough losses, the tough seasons can weigh on a player. You're entering the prime of your career. J.A. kind of mentioned it last year. All he cares about is winning. He wants to win now. Is there a sense of urgency? You obviously always want to win. Knowing that, you know, you're getting to the prime of your career. Like you want to win now. Yeah, I think that's a fair question. I think, you know, you start to evaluate when you, I mean, year six. And you know how fast it goes. And I try not to put the cart before the horse.
And we're looking too far ahead by the same time. You do want to win. You want to be a part of a winning culture and have a chance to win the Super Bowl and the playoffs and all those things. That's why we do this personally. And I'm just excited with being a part of an organization in an environment where now like everybody's on the same page in the in the message is uniform. And it speaks from the top down. And it reflects in the guys that they're bringing in, you know, all the guys that they brought in are guys who are hungry who are competitors who not only fighting for spots, but we want to help us win games. And when you're around an environment like that, like that, that makes you excited, makes you hopeful. And, you know, you don't know how it's going to turn out until we start playing games. But the foundation is extremely important. And I think this offseason, we've really done a great job of building that they have. And then when a coach, Quing guy here building with this team. So I feel like we're going to be going into this offseason really knowing what we all got to do individually become ready for camp. But the message is clear to come back to camp ready to compete and and be ready to win.
Thanks, Dary. Appreciate you guys. One of the funniest guys on the team right now is playing as much. So I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt. So I can bring younger guys with me because I've been going. One of those younger guys we're seeing it. It's the first time it's heard all the lectures. What have you seen from Will? Because I'm going to ask you a real forgot about it because he was heard. Now he's running almost a second man up on the table. What have you seen? What was a workhorse? He goes, stay quiet. He's going to work hard. And that's what I love about him. He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's going to get a job done. Do a job right. Rarely has any mistakes. So what would be a successful season? A national championship. I'm reading when all the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't be beat.
We just got to go show it. That mindset different. Seems like you guys expect the national championship over here this year even more so you guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like that. That's a lot. Does that just keep feeling different? Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same word. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go go bigger, go home and we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute. You know what I mean? You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that? Hey, you guys want to win a national championship. But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year. Like you're that close. So I'm saying we just like work harder. That's that's kind of coach makes a saying. You know, nobody cares. Work harder.
Like those, you know, when we played Georgia, the same thing. Last, last play. You know, they went on the win in 90. So we just got to get over that hump at them in the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles? Of course, you know, it's frustrating, but you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you can learn. I thought I was working hard and then you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. What do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, 85. 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher.
I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder. I'm just trying to be a better player. Yeah, the shape. It's kind of the idea of potentially the 16 or 17 of the 17. I mean, I said about that idea, there's a make you nervous about, can you last that long? I think, I think we, I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D line and the online and everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of that, if you like playing that means after that last year, I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that next time. Yeah, I did, unless we were like winning by like a line. I thought like there are no moments you know, I can go sit down or something, but we're playing them big games like, you know, Northern Dan, too, or North, those kind of games.
Of course, I want to be, because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald and his heat guy, that you guys are the second? Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac animal. You haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has the work I think he just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 6-3, you're 3-27, he's 3-26. Yeah, he's, I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you older guys, there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in your back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right, during the all season. So they can play and not just play, they want to like contribute, like make plays, tackle sex.
It seems like these guys get things each with the first McLeod because they're not bigger or bigger. So those guys kind of, those are going to kind of while you're in the cell. Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of something a day too when I'm passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined. I'd say that it looks like they're ready to work. I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last couple of nice and the championship winners, like team of North, they didn't know they got two little detaco, two athletic detacos. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacos. So I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams.
If you think about this, they're going to find what's Georgia, Jordan Davis and Daniel Carter. Let's miss you again. It's Chris Jenkins. Tell me more questions. I mean, you understand it because you play it, but I feel like some time I don't know. Are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacos. Yeah, like in the combine, just now you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four, seven, eight, and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think it, when you think about this freakish attack, how do you think you fit into that bowl of that kind of player? Will you watch that and say, yeah, that's me? Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacos, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch it through the drills. I have to say you like to look at my film. So I think I'm going to say what all of those guys are. Do you become like an artist who comes to batting up passes the figure wags and your things?
When you're going to spring practice, you're not doing as much a weapon or the weapon. How do you work on that? Do you have like a goal when you merge? I don't remember how much I've lied to you. Do you have a goal in mind? How many do you want to have? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that. But I think they've counted. I think they've counted some of them and it's some of them where I like just missed it. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's goes big and what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter Vegas. Anyway, you can. It's just great for the defense, you know, just that little thing covering his eye, you know, he might throw it. A little bit to the left to our players. So it's something that you really, really have to work on. It's really, that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You can bring your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Oh, that passes. We don't have to ask. We're kind of expected for this one. I think I just have like an eye for the ball comment. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up.
I just try to get in his way and sometimes he throws it to me. I don't know. How your advantage would you like to be a high sleep quarterback? I mean, they get frustrated, but you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. I should lot of, a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs and you got to go right now. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Auto, he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. Who's the best back in this draft? Best back in this draft. I'll lead that up to y'all. That's y'all decision. Playing well with Howard, but I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard, man. He's just such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players they fold, man.
He was just always calm and relaxed, man. He, just the leader that he was, man, that's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's, he's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. And just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people's, man, he's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so, man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so, man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands. I'm going to write a line out looking at his POC spot and put on his top face in personality. And I'm going to keep that up until they can see him. Yeah. Coach, Coach Hartline, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well, you know, just learning from him as well, you know, trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartline. And so, he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so, I think that would do really good.
Straight away, and it's a place where you can play all cards. That's what we put in my training to. Just the intensity, man. And the intensity of the playoffs, every game, man, is like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and the intensity of keeps getting higher and higher. So, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State. You know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before then. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know I took a couple of days off after the national championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida and I'm writing to it.
And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at your performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man. They did a really good job. The Bucking Nears, no, I haven't. Temple, temple, nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and the vert. It's really all about technique and then it's all about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receiver, so I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother.
I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit. You know, and so I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that, but I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man, making sure the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you've been working on right now? In my game. You can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like it's more so. You know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe. It's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better. I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year. And so I just want to continue to build on that. So you know what I did? Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So people, you look like, I'll let you bar out there. You get that comparison. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camarit.
Sure, yeah, man, I have a Camarit. Great, great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. Yeah. He's so smooth. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I say the next one is probably just an option route out of the backfield. You know, and man and man coverage. You're getting on that linebacker and so. What do you have to do? What do you have to do? He made two bigger, make couple of years to realize. You'll have the perfect person. But I'll just have to push it. But I'm going to have to push it. You're not going to get too much attention. Yeah, I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man. And the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard, you know, even shoot it. I don't know, every good, I think he had it.
Every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely, man, he's going to be a special player, man. He really is. How do you look like to our, you know, your last game, you know, going for a one-star game, you know, spin-down spin-trees. I know it's a match of champions, when you look back on it, what do you want to stand down on? Man, a lot of ups and downs, man. It's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm not going to have something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity. I had nothing to run to, you know, you can run to people, but they still can't. It's not too much, they can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments where it's tough, you know, where it's low. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort, you know.
Even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so... The back of the firm, Vincent Howard and John Jackson, do you want to explain what aspect of each of those other individuals have shown to come from being around Howard and Sam? Um, man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. I just really love their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quinch, I'm a mentality, man. That boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know. You see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And then as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, stiff arm, and somebody, and shoot, it's a game to 10. So, you know, you're trying to use some of the things he does, he just realizes two different guys.
Yeah. Um, shoot, I think... Yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, too, beyond it. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong, and so, um, you know, he's able to do those things. So, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game, and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quinch, you know, I want to look at his game, and it's like, man, where, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man, I'm always looking to grow as a player. What's your last name? Julian Sand. Oh yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate, and so, um, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, um, continuing to grow as a leader, continuing to grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for high state. Uh, he's, I know just the quarterback position. Um, I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to, um, ask Julian Sand as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead, um, and lead the offense and lead the team.
Thanks, you're an extra. Shoot, man, he has, he has a bill like JK Dobbins. And, um, I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. Um, I feel like he's not talked about his, no, um, a lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is, is great. I remember, um, before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every, um, one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And, um, I feel like, you know, um, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see, um, James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same. Appreciate you all. You have a good one. This.
I'm. Well, I got coming in last round. So I just tacked Eric Dave really the same way. Thanks for taking advantage, very rare physically. I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240, I'm like 244 right now. Last year, I played it like 236 to 37. What does it feel like a 244 or a belt? You feel like almost a different machine out there. Yeah. What does it feel like to be running around out there? Like you are with more, more bands. I just feel like I'm like, like, like more downhill, like stronger. I'm taking all blocks better. It's big. Yeah. You said don't think, uh, maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year.
And you played quite a bit last year and stuff. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? I just got to get ready to just play. I already more snaps. But are you, are you, how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an age standpoint? I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My, I'm ready for it. The text is open. It's a rematch. So it's not really two different teams compared to the ones that I'm going to play and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the word opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming. So we know we got to do. We've been prepared for it. I already just probably went to the field. I think Riley ready to play right now. He, he advanced freshman like he in the, he in the book. He studied in like he advanced and his measurements crazy like he saw like the saw line to him. I'll tell you, you said you're ready. I know you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready for whatever the team needed for you?
Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Just whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling it's your bandwagon. That's the one more time. How different is that response to? That's the most. All that was last year. You knew you were a homemaker. Oh. I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was intentional with everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Somebody you, somebody you may be seeing. I was in the chat. And what work? How's anybody worked your watch?
I say, describe my game. I say, when you think of me, you would think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet. I don't really know what it's going to be. That's how I like to play and think. No, I ain't got to be my nickname. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I was like, what's the most important question? How does that fit you? And what are you enjoying about playing in that kind of style? I think it fit me because I just like the defense. I feel like we got, like you said, we got a lot of freedom. We're moving around a lot. A lot of the terms is like, no, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's okay. You could go on your instincts a little bit more. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on. But it's like, I just like it's deep.
I like how the truth is I like what you got going on. What was it sad when CJ left the ring? No, I wanted to much sad. I was kind of like happy for him. Yeah, that's what you want. No, no. That's my dog. Kind of missing a little bit, but yeah, I'm happy for him. Well, go ahead one last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship. You guys will win your own. How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and a lot of some of your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like, yeah, I do feel like I did win a national last year, but like you said, my role wasn't same as how it's going to be this year. I definitely want to go get another one experienced and like feeling we need to be on the field, a lot more place. Great. I feel like we kind of have a lot of leaders on the D line and at the D in position,
so we kind of all kind of just kind of talk about each other. It's been a tough turn. We've been up to these guys. Playing with them all. You know, the field and the teams. So you need those guys. I was like, I'm just an agent. We love it. You're all competitive people. We all love to fish each other. And I feel like the springing is the best side of all of this. I feel like we're all just kind of bouncing off each other, and we see what one person does, and we kind of split it into our actual box. And we all kind of just kind of build one great thing. Hey, do you ever go around last year and you got to get the shot at the full-back in the world? And the day of coach you, that I there in two coached in, I mean, how did that come about? Because you're a Jackson all yearers lobby. You get to test that. So I definitely did it in high school. I was full-back and a little bit of Titan. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson. Honestly, you love watching it too, before you left. And I feel like you're playing that seed in Coach Day's head. And Coach Day kind of just went for it. And I tried to do the best I could to do it.
Does that continue in gaming? Do you think you can screen it? New play, but I did not know yet. Yeah, we've got that far. How tough is it to be? Yeah, look at that. I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any professional in the field. You need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and try to do my best for you. Kit, Jack, do the same thing. Oh, yeah. But what about what it was like? Graphically, if that's what I... I was talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of sought you and got out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just got to wait into those relationships. That didn't. And how did that help you maybe get the right mindset? Definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it, how long the season is now, what you got to do to prepare for and what happened in all that time from here to to this. So I feel like we definitely just pushed in, we kind of connected, and we kind of just talked, man-on-man, and he kind of just sent it straight to me.
And I feel like we kind of both agreed on it. That's the question we know we're making it. Yeah, I don't. Making each other better every day. I've got the four best DNs, five best DNs, honestly, and college football, and we're going to be one of the best DIs and college football. I do feel like a better player today than you were in this season. I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in. And I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. I do recommend Ryan to pass it to the TKFC. That sounds bizarre, but I mean, the season goes by so fast already. So when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like, wow, it's already week 10. So now it's kind of, you get you more time to kind of enjoy it, kind of, save it, because I'm already here for a feeling of freshness, freshness, freshness, freshness. But you don't want to spend all your power in the first month, the whole year, right? There is a mindset that I didn't know the season had.
Yeah, definitely. Definitely going to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much is Larry talking about? Last question right here. From 2016, 2017, 4 NFL 2 Finch and 1 Dollar and San rotation. How much does he talk about that? I mean, he doesn't have a talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know what we could become. So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time. And God wanted us to be here. And He knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together at something special. We plan as much. So I just wanted to get more experience under my belt. So I can bring younger guys with me because I've been going on. One of those younger guys, we're seeing it on it. It's the first time it's heard all year last year. What have you seen from Lowe? I've been going to go to the last year and we all forgot about it because he was heard. Now how he's running, you know, almost a second man off the high. What have you seen from Lowe?
Well, it's a workhorse. He goes, stay quiet. He's going to work hard. And that's what I love about him. He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's going to get the job done. Do a job right. He rarely has any mistakes. So what would be a successful season? A national championship? A ring? When all the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't be beat. And we just got to go show it. That mindset different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year. This year even more so. You guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided what that happens. Does that just keep feeling difference? Or is it not really any difference? It's just the same. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go bigger going home then. We're not trying to go home. So it's finished big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute.
Right? You know what I mean? You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that? Hey, you guys want to win a national championship. But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year. Like you're that close. So I'm saying we just work harder. That's kind of what you make of saying. You know, nobody cares. It's work harder. Like those, you know, one plate Georgia is the same thing. Last, last play. You know, they went on the win in the 90s. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year. And hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought that was working hard. And you always find out there's a little more. You could have been doing it. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college.
I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could. But now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all. Compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. But to stand up as a 16th. And the answer to what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, 85. 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny. But I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder in shape. It's kind of the idea of a potential 16th. I think I can tell that. I think we, I definitely can. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys that come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Uh, just everybody's like online. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D line and the online and everywhere else.
So we can last that long. Speaking of the light. If you like playing at me snap to me. I don't know. I don't know. Yeah, I did unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought like there are no moments you know, I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame, too, or those kind of games. Of course, I wouldn't be because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. It stands out about feeding McDonald's. You got to keep up with your guys. It looks like a good. Oh, yeah, definitely came back as a came back to animal. Y'all you haven't really seen it yet. But in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has to work ethic. He just has to get, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know, he has to work ethic. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening six. You're three 27. He's three 26. Yeah, I kind of look at him like my junior. But you know, Kate might be a great player. He's got to develop more in getting the playbook.
So really a lot on you older guys. There's that large group of young guys. And then there's the seniors in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely, we got to be leaders. I said we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right during the all season. So they can play and not just play. They want to like contribute, like make plays tackle a sex. It's a great fight about this question. Thank you. It seems like these guys get bigger. Each one of the freshmen classes is bigger or bigger. Do those guys kind of, does it kind of allow you to solve the first? Yeah, they definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. They probably seem much of somebody day to pass on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard. They're determined to do that. It looks like they're ready to work at me. I'm going to put this note. It feels like, you know, there's a lot of great defenses. That you have big athletic defense attacks so you can eat up space. But also, you know, right?
That is that. Does that require maybe for great defense? To have guys like you that have some fault, but also a great team. I think that is definitely. I think if you look at the last couple of national champions and winners, like Seema North, they didn't know they got two good, uh, detackled, two athletic detackers. Look at Georgia, two athletic detackers. I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, if they want to fight by the defense attack, what's Georgia? Jordan Davis and Janet Carter. What's Michigan? It's Chris Jenkins. So, couple more questions. Do you mind if I just wonder how, I mean, you understand this as you play it, but I feel like some time, I don't know, are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop more and more of these like freakiest detackers. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving forward to 478 and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about those freakish athletic defense
tackles, how do you think you fit into that, bold of that kind of player? Watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detackers, but I don't want to get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch it do the drills. I have Tate here, you're like, look at my, my film. So I think I'm up there with all those guys. Tyler, can you become like an artist or come to the bad guy's class? Is the figure wags kind of your clanks? I mean, you're going to say, Frank Praxis, you're not doing it as much as the other level of athletic. I'm not going to have this person who's been working on that. Do you have like an award, Mark? I don't remember how many Ad Lions you're going. Do you have a gold eye scurvy? How many people do you want to have? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that. But I think he's, he said it. I think it counts some of them. And some of them were like just missed it. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's, uh, goes big. And, uh, what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarterback is anywhere you can. It's just great for the defense. You know, just that little thing you cover
in his eye, you know, he might throw it. A little bit to the left to our player. So, so it's something that you really, really have to work on. You can do that. What you can do to happen. It's really, that's one of the things that you can maybe work on the most. You can do your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen, like, oh, that pastor just takes a good, we don't have to ask for this title. You're kind of kind of, kind of, expect it for the future. I think I just have like a, like, a eye for the ball, kind of, I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. I just try to get in his ways. And sometimes he just throws it to me. I don't know. I'm irritated if you want to be a high state court next game. You're in your back down passes. I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know. We're just getting better. That's a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. If you got to pick your top three backs, you get a goal right now, one, two. Uh, I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey.
Although he was injured this year, I like McCaffrey. Who's the best back in this drive? Best back in this drive. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all, that's y'all decision. Playing well with Howard. What I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard man. He's just such a great lead, such a great leader, man. He's just like in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players, they fold, man, he was just always calm and relaxed, man. And he just the leader that he was, man, that's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's, he's going to be really good, man. He's on Coastal Lug. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people's man, he's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running backroom is in great hands. I was right about looking at the U.S.
but I'm just not the greatest personality. And I'll keep that up until the end. Yeah, Coach, Coach Hartline, man, he's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well, you know, I'm just learning from him as well, you know, trying to run more outside the backfield was being able to learn from Coach Hartline. And so he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think that would do really good. It's right right. It's a way to play on the way. That's what we want to share to this guy. Just the intensity, man. And since he got the playoffs, every game, man, it's like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and intensity, it keeps getting higher and higher. And so, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State. You know, I definitely feel like Ohio State, they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that.
And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship and then shoot right after that. I'm writing sample Florida and I'm writing to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at your performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. I just bring that sand in the way they went about training us, man. They did a really good job. I mean, that was the beginning. The bucket in the air. No, I haven't. We think it's a city Tampa. Tampa, Tampa. Nice. This is a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and avert. The 40 to broad and avert. I'm trying to make a great, this is an awesome offer. You need to be here with your mentality of like when you've got online records or something. I think it's a good thing to be here with your friends.
Yeah. Yeah, no, man. It's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Wil Howard. It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Wil, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. It's like, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit. You know, and so I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that, but I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brothers, though, man, making sure that the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you've been working on right now in the game? In my game. You can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like it's more so, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe it's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better. I feel like I did a good job of that in my senior year.
And so I just want to continue to build on that. Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So people say you look like a lot of people are out there. You get back in nursing. I think that's a lot of people. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. I know I have a Camera. Sure, yeah, man, I have a Camera great, great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield. And man, man, coverage. You're getting on that line backer. And so.
Yeah, I say to man, the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man. And the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, he's going to work every single week. Every practice, he's working hard. You know, even shoot, I don't know. Every good, I think he had a, every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely, man, he's going to be a special player, man. He really is. Yeah, man, a lot of ups and downs, man. It's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm not have something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't, it's not too much. They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is
your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so, being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments, where it's tough, you know, where it's low. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you, he gives you that peace and comfort, you know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't, you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? How do I have so much peace in this situation? And so, that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so, which aspect to each of those other individuals that shoot right to God, from being around power to Him? Um, man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. I just really love their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quencha, I'm mentality, man, that boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know, you see, you know, sometimes he put
in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, stiff arm, and somebody, and shoot, it's a game of 10. And so, I think, yeah, man, I think it's just like, you know, I'm going through this game. Yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, too, beyond it. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong, and so, you know, he's able to do, he's able to do those things. And so, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game, and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quencha, you know, I want to look at this game, and it's like, man, where, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. Julian Sand. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate. And so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, continuing to grow as a leader, continuing to grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for a high state.
He's, I know just the quarterback position. I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask of Julian Sand as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead the, and lead the offense and lead the team. Right, right. Backstreet. Right. Right. Right. Right. Shoot, man, he has, he has a build like JK Dobbins. And, um, I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his, not a lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is, is great. I remember, um, before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember, um, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every, um, one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And, um, I feel like, you know, um, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see, um, James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they played the same. And so, appreciate you all. Yeah, I'll be going.
Oh, I got coming in last year. I knew it was all so I just tacked every day really the same way. It's a very, very rare. Instically, how different are you? Weight wise, body wise, all that. From the year ago. Um, I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240, you know, like 240, 4 right now. Last year, I played it like 236 to 37. What does it feel like at 244? Or maybe I'll be able to feel like an almost a different machine out there. Yeah. I just feel like I'm like, like, like more downhill, like stronger, like I'm taking all blocks better. It's a big. Yeah. It is. Don't think, uh, maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year instead. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? I just got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps.
So, but are you, are you, how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an age standpoint? Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My, I'm ready for it. The text is open. It's a rematch. So it's, but it's not really two different teams compared to the ones that I'm going to play and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the, where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been, um, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming. So we know we got to do, we've been prepared for it. I already just broadly. I think Riley ready to play right now. He, he advanced freshman like he and the, he and the book, he stood in like he advanced and his measurements crazy like he saw like the saw line to him. I said you're ready. Like, what was that process like during last season? Did you feel yourself becoming more and more ready? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Just whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year.
When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. What's the difference between feeling this year and then last year? I asked a one more time. How different is that? It's probably over 50, that's just the most important call that. When it was last year, you knew you were a whole player. I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year, but I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was attention over to everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Is somebody who's some reason to stand by? What word? How's anybody worth your watch? I say, describe my game. I say, when you think of me, you would think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet.
I don't really know bullet. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. I don't think I'm going to be my nickname, but I'm saying that the nickname could be. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's like. How does that fit you? What are you and what are you doing about playing in that kind of stuff? I think it fit me because I just like the defense. I feel like we got, like you said, we got a lot of freedom and we're moving around a lot of the terms. I don't know. I don't really know how to answer that. That's okay. You can go on your instincts a little bit more, maybe. That's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like, I just like it's defense. I like how it's pretty different. I like what you got going on. What was it sad when CJ left the watch? Now I wanted to say that I was kind of happy for him. That's what you want.
No. No, that's my dog. I'm kind of missing a little bit, but I'm happy for him. Well, don't think, go ahead one last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship. You guys will win your own. How much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and a lot of some of your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like, I did win the national last year, but like you said, my role wasn't the same as how it's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to go get another one experienced that feeling, maybe on the field, a lot more place. Great. Well, Bill, thank you very much. The championship in Nican, you know, before and everything like that, and also in the game, your teeth knocked in, you know, first game, and you can't have that happen because I don't really know what it was. So just the concept mindset to continually get better has been on the forefront of my mind, and forefront of anyone here you can ask.
70s, about the end of the year. Yeah. Yeah, I know. We look at the class stats every now and then I'm like, oh man, they're gone. They're gone. No, it's been good. I mean, the guys who are still here have definitely kind of bonded together pretty good. So, yeah, I mean, you know, Mark came in the other day is like, in that class, 21 best class ever. I'm like, yeah, sure. Okay. You know, I can't really can't really even, you know, just sitting to that, you know, not much left, but, yeah, I mean, to do what we can and do what we can for this team has been really important for all of us. And I think us now realizing where the veterans, you know, where the old guys now in the group has been, kind of strange, at least to begin with, you know, because you go from all those guys,
you like Donnie and Josh and those guys and all of a sudden, it's Sunday. We have a team meeting after the, like the celebration, the shoe and all of a sudden, the next day that it's gone. And, you know, it's just very different. So I think us being able to step up as, you know, leaders and as, as vets to help bring out, you know, along the team are units and this program has been really important. What are your overall two more questions just to try? Um. But then he was your office long country, for sure. Luke said that Jay has been a bus of so far. He didn't continue to talk about him, but he's playing for us. Somebody who went through that would have been impressed by Jay. No, it could spend doing really well. I mean, I can't go as any goes of work. Um, he's extremely athletic, extremely flexible. Um, you know, he's a young kid, obviously. He's a lot of, um, a lot of development, a lot of, he's a little adversity at all of us do. Um, but I think he's going through that right now, but he's been coming out on the better end of it so far. And excited to see what he can do because he's very impressive at this young stage.
So I'm a little bit more, um, so I'm sure overall level of excitement just to be back with the rest of this interior office of Lyon. Yeah, extremely excited. I mean, um, trying to just build that culture back up again. Like what we had last year, uh, I, I'm trying to do a little stuff here and there. And I can know I think we're going to Ray race of barbecue. I think tomorrow. So shout out Ray race. But, um, but yeah, just trying to get that brotherhood back. Get that, you know, that oblock spirit back. Sure it's coming soon. Hopefully, um, but just to kind of get those, uh, not those same faces, but those same kind of mindsets back and, uh, our, our group is important right now. And it's been fun to meet new guys from different backgrounds and stuff like that. Um, and try to figure out how to, you know, build that and mend that together. It's been pretty cool. Now, as you are one of the most experienced veterans on this team, how much do you feel like you have to be a leader for the students here? Yeah, for sure. I mean, I think that comes, um, it's, it's obviously, I don't feel like it's natural to anyone to immediately step up and that's something I've been working on every day and talking to God about.
Um, but I have to understand that and that's something I want to continue to work on. I want to be able to be a guy that people can fall back on and like coach just saying before like we're going to have highs and lows, but the great players, the ones being set our clocks to and I kind of want. That's my goal as to be one of those people that you can do that. Um, and I think for especially a very new set of eyes in the Woody, um, not only coaches, but players. I think it's very important to kind of keep that steady mindset. And I think for me, learning how to be a leader has been important just to not be too hard on myself, but also not let myself kind of slack off in some departments to try to keep steady. Just your story itself, though, is testament of what it means to like for perseverance and stuff, too, though, right? Carson, I mean, you know, that's, that's gonna have to stand up from somebody to say that, right? I mean, just, what do you, what do you think you've shown more than anything else in every card? Yeah, I mean, I've been blessed, you know, I've, you know, I've been blessed with a lot of adversity.
I think that's definitely made me better on the back end and, um, you know, coach, so it, Coach, they always talks about it and you don't, you know, great leaders aren't, you know, they can. Show it, but you know, a lot of people can show it. A lot of people can just talk about it, but to be about it is important. And I think to me, now I've went through a lot of that adversity. I went through a lot of that stuff and my testament, you know, has been written in an interesting way. But I think for me to take that next step is really important for not only for this team, but for myself personally. What's your, your impressions of Eastern? Yeah, he's been doing great. I mean, he came in big, freaking strong. He's fun to be in the weight room with. He's, uh, he's kind of quiet. That gets kind of my first impression on, but he's actually pretty funny, dude. He, he and his dad come over and they kind of joke around. And so he's been doing a great job. He's been doing a great job for his size. He has like freaky athletic feet, like I watched him do the ladders and that's a lot of massive overrun on those things.
You know, doing a little achy shuffle, but I mean, he's he was killing it. And so he's been doing a great job. I can't wait to see how it kind of continues to develop throughout this summer and throughout this fall camp. First thing I want to say is that I'm not going to hire him. What it all has to be. Yeah, Piggy's been doing great. I mean, he, he stepped up. Piggy, yeah, everyone refers to this. Piggy is his username one time. Nice. Everyone is Piggy. Anyway, um, you know, Pig's been doing great. He, uh, he's been able to step up and kind of bring around on those younger guys. You know, everyone's kind of trying to figure out their, their new roles. And I think he's been, uh, he made a lot of things. Big body guy that he catch the bar can run between the tacos. His feet are quicker than once you think for a big guy. Yeah, really good feet. We get balanced. So that's what makes it good. That's what I saw. Is that a common for bigger back like the personality? I don't know. I'm probably good. I'm running back some time back. Well, tight end background. I don't know many with that type of background, but he's high school.
We see that they try to play as an age back. Well, really good. What do you look in the portal for running actually? Try to make your running back. Does it matter to you if you have two different styles of running backs? Maybe one guy can do certain things better. One guy can do certain things. He'll just say the best running back. I want to have different. I want to talk to you. You know, take guys with different. Whether they're big guys, small guys, tall, small characters in between the type of runners. No, I don't want to say the same thing. Different. Different. Different. You guys have built and clinched a lot of their shoulder red zone story. You guys are actually really good. Is it important to find the back of the size that you see in your head as the ultimate? No, I have my own opinion on the size they've been in the company. I had Jordan James out of order. He's my grandson. I'm running a show y'all run as a freshman in probably way to two 10 to five, which is not very big.
But they ain't got any deal with being in it. Some guys you got to know. So sticking about his own. And you play with a lot of aggression down here. And that could be CJ. That could be James or what could be the freshman. Go Jackson. It's just you who has no one to give an in zone. But that's that's who I'm all over. I'm just because you're being there. I'm making a lot of. You can get obviously you know freshman running back to you when it's there here. But what do you need to see from a freshman to feel comfortable with that. In the first thing with it on the ball. When they do the little small detail. Take care of the ball. The second thing will be how good they. You feel comfortable with. And I say where they're at or at least you know where their time lives. Yeah. I think they've been fine. I'd say I tell all the young guys. He's a marathon. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was.
I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. I was. The young guys. He's a marathon. I was. The first day he first you been an earner. Spine on special teams. You earn a spot on special teams. You. You earn the right to be a book out. So they get that down the field. So I. I think they're turning the right. Which is first practice. Not wasn't merit. So the build off. And cleaning stuff to work on. I feel like they're definitely picking up quick. I mean I was in their shoes one time and I had Zach Harrison, Jibonta and Tyler Friday all in front of me. So I feel like I'm trying to be one of those peers that they work for me and kind of just give them the steps to get there. And I feel like they're definitely picking up quick.
And they're definitely going to be one of the great Russian players. I think Coach Jackson is talking about it. JT and Zach probably need a ton of their experience. Maybe that's the new opportunity for you to be a lot of people. Is there a difference in the work going to be getting through half of camp in the last couple? I feel like all the camps I've definitely got in a big course learn and I love that. I ask Coach Jay for it. I love getting more reps because I just like protecting my craft. So I mean some people may not need it. Some people need it. But I mean I just like to get my little details perfectly like my steps and my footing. Kind of just affecting my toolbox and what we call it and my craft and just trying to be a second whenever every place is what kind of difference. Yeah, definitely just getting stronger faster everything all the above. But one of my big things is being a leader and kind of just not trying to look still look up to Jack and JT and kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into.
So I feel like I kind of have a lot of leaders on the D line and we have to be in position so we kind of all kind of just count off the children and others. So we all competitive people, we all look at fish each other and that's the way to bring the best side of all of this. We all just kind of bounce off each other and see what one person does and we kind of build into our toolbox and we all kind of build on one great thing. Hey, do you remember last year when you got the shot at full back and the day of the shoot that I there in two coached them. I mean, I didn't come up out because you're a jack saw your sloppy. So I definitely did it in high school. I was pulled back and a little bit of tidying. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson honestly. He loved watching it too before he loved and he played in that seat and Coach Day's head and Coach Day kind of just went for it and tried to do the best I could to do it.
Is that the children we're now? I mean, do you have anything in the screen? New play about Guy DiNano, you haven't got that far. How tough was that? Yeah, look at that. I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field and need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and try to do what I'm for you. I can't jack you the same thing. Oh yeah. What about you? Roughly, that's what. Kayden is talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of side you and about how to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just want to wait until those movies are expected and how did that help you maybe get the right mindset against what I'm doing in this screen? I'm definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. People kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it, how long the season is now. What you got to do to prepare for and what could happen in all that time from here to to then. So I feel like we definitely just coached in, we kind of connected, we kind of just talked, man on man, and he kind of just sent straight to me and I feel like we kind of both are pretty honest.
I'm just kidding. We know we're making it. We're making each other better every day and we got the four best DNs, five best DNs, honestly. Coach football and we're going to be one of the best DLs in Coach football. How do you feel about a player today that you work in this year? I feel like I'm taking big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. I think I'm right behind the line for the CPC. I mean, it sounds bizarre, but I mean, the season goes by so fast already. So when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow, it's already weekend. So now it's kind of, it's getting more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it because I'm already here for a feeling of freshness for this crazy. But you don't want to spit on your powder for the first month of the year, right? Oh yeah, there is that, not pace yourself that, but I mean, there is a mindset that I did that season. So definitely, definitely going to have that mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices.
How much has Larry talked to you guys around here? Last question right here. 2016, 2017, 4 and 5, 2, 5, 2, 5, 2, 5, 2, 5, 2, so much. Does he talk to that guy? I mean, he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know what we could become. So we know we were right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time and God wanted us to be here and we knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together. And then be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and you come together with something special. How did your expectations, like, as you get up with how do you feel, you've played at this point in the past? I feel like I've made the plays that came to me. And that's really awesome. I've had more opportunities as years progressed and been in spots to be around the ball. But the expectation was to come here and contribute to the team and try to find a way to push the team to win games at our high level.
And to be better than they were in Lashian for me to play better than I was in Lashian. So really just coming to try to grow with myself and with the team. So that was my big goal and I feel like I've done a good job and the team has done a good job progressing through the year and getting better. So yeah, that's all I can say about that. We're here in the right place. And many of them are out there. Yeah, I'm okay. I'll just stand here right now. Just feel like a different season. What does it feel like for you going into playoffs? You know, you'll get the feeling you want and necessarily the regular season. But here you are. What is that sense that you have right now that's different from the regular season? I mean, everybody wants to say it's a new season in terms of because if everybody's 0-0 right now, when you keep going, you lose your time. But genuinely, that's how you can play every game. You know, they play every game like it's your last game. So for me, I don't think it's really any difference to be able to go play at a high level every game that can't be based at home.
I don't think it's the same thing. So I would say in terms of that. No, you just have to play the game. Play the game this day. What feels difficult about this defense right now going into this? You all feel even more. You know, the fight that we close together. What was that? I mean, what is your sense of the brotherhood in sort of state of the defense? I feel like we progressed throughout the season. We did make a change after game 6 because we lost and we didn't play well that game. And I feel like we'd grown from that and add to a better place. And over these past two weeks, off just realizing, okay, these are the things that we messed up throughout the year. These are what we need to fix. These are what this team is trying to exploit on us. So just really going back to everything and seeing what can do better for this kind of game and for the next couple of years. Let's come to questions. Tell me your purpose. How does the Tennessee's wise.
What's the previous years impact you? I feel like it makes the game more. Again, I make sure you receive it as a DVD set the place that they're being in the guys' hearts. And it makes it truthfully like those guys have to do their job and these guys have to do your job. You got to be able to stop the running with the people they have to run with it and you have to be able to stop the path with the people they have out there. So that's what they do and they do it at a really low level. So let's give it up for going. And I find a question. Joy Coffin on this discussion. So Coach knows the time of the speed at which there you guys are going to call them. The lines is built for 10 buildings in the past. And the player kind of manages it and they give to you just speed at which point. All right. It allows you to get your clean senator. So earlier just a ability to see the formation and see what keys that you have before the play and have knowledge of your job and not really thinking. Being able to play and not think during the games is a really big thing.
So whenever you can get the call that faster and play a high level and play without thought. That's a really good thing. Thank you. Thank you very much. Appreciate you. Thank you. But you are a good guy. Check all your slot. Oh yeah. You get to test that. So I definitely didn't in high school. I was pulled back and a little bit of tidied in. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson. He loved watching it too. He loved it. I feel like he playing that seed in Coach Day's head and Coach Day kind of just went for it and tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that continuing now? Do you have anything in the screen? New play about Guaidanano. Yeah. I've gotten that far. How topos have you stayed? You're looking back on it. I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field you need me to. Just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and try to do my best for you. Can't you check me the same thing? Oh yeah. What? What? Graphically. That's why. I can't just talk into Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of start using that out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back.
Just put a weight into those from your perspective and how did I help you maybe get the right mindset against being in this country? I'm definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it. How long the season is now. What you got to do to prepare for and what to happen and all that time from here to then. So I feel like we definitely just coached JT and me kind of connected and we kind of just talked to the man or man. And he kind of just sent straight to me and I feel like we kind of broke it. Rest blessed. I mean, we're making it. We're making each other better every day. We got the four best DNs, five best DNs honestly. And the coach for the ball and we're going to be one of the best D-wines and coach for the ball. Are you still the better player today at any more again this season? I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader. And kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in. And I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. How do you record your head around the cost of the C&T?
Is that sound? I mean, it sounds bizarre, but I mean the season goes by so fast already. So I'm kind of like week 10 and you're like wow it's already week 10. So now it's kind of gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it because you've come already here for a really freshness. But you don't want to spend all your time here for the first month of the year right? Oh yeah. There is a pace yourself that. I mean, there is a mindset for the season. Yeah, definitely. Definitely going to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys about like that? Last question right here. 2016, 2017, 4 and 5, 2, 5, 2, 5, 2, 5, 2, 5. So much has he talked to that? I mean, he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know what we could become. So we know we're at the same, we're at the right place at the right time. And God wanted us to be here and He knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together at some special.
Great. You get like good coaches who believe in you and like they give you the tools to go out there and just play with confidence. You know, not their doubting yourself. Like you got your teammates, you got your back. Like our first play when I got up there to the seat, like when to sail, like IGB and Jermaine. Like personally, they say like, no worry, just go out there and play with confidence. You know, you know the tools, it's usual tools. Just go out there and make a play. And we're about to play coming to you. You know, we're just so time to show job. You just do it. And then like, say what goes well. He gives me. He puts me in a position like at the drills we put in the work you put in the one on one. So just go out there and perform at the highest level. How much better are you right now than maybe last month before spring. I mean, I got way better just because I've transitioned a little bit to the inside. Nicholas Fawcow. I'm like, now I seem to like catch catch technique and it's been often covers. That's not always press at the long. So it's like not maybe like move my feet, move my hands, like see, like what I got to do just like just in case I got to go back in corner. I can I plan. Well, now I'm very confident out there. Do you think that was a natural fit for you or have you had to kind of convince yourself to transition around?
I mean, I feel like it's natural for me because I feel like me individually. I'm a fast learner. A fast learner. Like coaches help us like learn fast and like because they're always honest about the techniques and stuff. So you like you write down like pick up all the things and then like when we get out of the coaches to like the techniques always go out there and play like fast spot. And it's been like it would like reversit. You're able to go out there and just compete. Is that where you kind of stuff this spring or you've been kind of out there? So I really been stuck there this spring a little bit right whenever you get it's like other things. I just bounce out there every once in a while just like have just have fun. See if I still got it every once in a while. So it's as good as going through the compete at most spots. You mentioned the technique. What technique tips and things that you had to pick up and learn from what you're from in the meantime. I mean, it's always like you're like because what preachers are asking hands like see it. You see it move your feet and then get your hands on the man. So it's like when you get like when you out there you able to like process like the way the receiver comes off the ball looking at the hips and seeing like the way he move.
And are you able to pick up like the row concepts you can get out of that like so it's being like undercodes walls for me. Like as a player and just like him breaking out football to you like one on one is very beneficial. What was the hardest part of making that transition from outside that sense? I really say like the corner you got your cover to cover three each cover once. I mean it's easy. And you got nickel. There are so many responsibilities you got to see like the row concepts. You got to be able to process like diagnosed rouse faster than what you got in the back. You got to do my corner and just be able to like every game. Quaid like transition you got like you got to move fast. It's like game recognition. Where you think maybe from the most since you got to. I'll definitely say I'll definitely say has because how you get to like college is a little bit different. High school. We don't got to worry about things like that when I when you get to like college in school like this. You know recognition of plays and like you know your jobs the way like the coverage is supposed to be played. Understand why your teammates are supposed to have to feel like it is easy.
What if your product man? It's very talented. He's a great dude. He's a humble guy. Great teammate. Very supportive. As I got into the one around because you like you feed off of energy because you can see like when you make a place. He's like he's like I.G.B. It's like I.G.B. Two-pointer so he's like you got to go guys like that with good energy. I made you play a little bit harder and it's like when you make a place out there. It's helping you like it's being out there with him. He's a great player. One of those guys questions. Can't four kids come to Ohio State obviously. I'm probably serious now. What is it about one bill that gets you to play at Ohio State? It's a big question. I know. I'm just a good player because we have so many kids come out of the blue and just play at games. I leave like the league schools and they like like tracks a big part of it because I mean to actually in a blue. Everybody got to run track like it's mandatory. You don't really get a choice.
You able to just like get out here and like know how to compete and then like G like. Game builds that mental toughness into you so like. Have you like I've heard now you got to be mentally tough because I'm like life. I'm going to be easy so it's like being out here. Being able to compete when you down just pick yourself back up. I mean that's a dance down to me. That's a dance. That's a dance. How do you describe the mentality of the defense right now getting this opportunity for a rematch for the world? Yeah. Hungry and thankful. I mean we know how the last last time when you know we had a chip on our shoulder. I mean we were riding high before that game and we took that loss and we came back how to make a couple changes. But I think we understand what you know everything's at stake right now. You know just fighting to where another house stage is for the next game. That's what's on stake and just to be able to represent this state and this team. I mean we understand what's on the line and you know we're just hungry and blessed that we get this opportunity playing the Rose Bowl. Right behind your Adam King. WBNS. What do you remember most about walking off the field in Eugene?
What was kind of lost your mind in that moment? I mean there was a... I don't think anybody imagined it. Imagine us losing. You know I didn't. That's for sure. And I think after that it was kind of hit deep. But understanding that man we still... There's still a lot of ball left to be played. I mean you can let it sting for a little bit but you know if you let it carry over too long then you know there goes. There goes your whole season by. I think we did a great job of just understanding coming together in this room right here. Not being afraid of display or hold accountability from one another. And you know as that happened we came back we grouped and you know we're just going right now. And I'm just blessed for those specific moments you know losing. I mean no one wants to lose but the testimonies and the things you're taught within those little situations speaks of all of you. After all we're all right.
You know what did he say from King Gala the last couple of weeks? Was there like a push from him? Did there be conversation with him? He can see that he's playing in the same basketball court and things. Yeah I mean that's my boy he's in the R2X club too but you know Keata. I mean every time his numbers call he goes out there and makes the most of it no matter where we are in the game. When he goes out there he's just hungry. He wants to go make plays and you know we see it in practice so it's not surprising to us. Bill Rebino has put this back. Dylan gave us obviously very elusive in our talent and he's not very tall. How important it could be to just kind of stay in your past rush lanes and neglect a lot of balls and kind of make a difference that way? Yeah I think it just comes on being disciplined. No one who you're playing against like you said, he's a he sure but he's very elusive. He can he is making throws. I mean he get out the parking to everything. So I think for us we just have to discipline and just continue to just meet with Coach Jay.
Me with the coach knows and understand how we can just eliminate that. One question about you and Jack. I mean your personality seems to be a little different. You're more on the quiet side. He's not. Yeah. How about you play together four years both five four guys. Kind of describe your relationship with him, friendship with him. Yeah. Just kind of how you cop among each other. Man that's my brother like you said. We're different but very alike. I think outside on like you said he's louder I'm quiet but you know once we're on that field we're like the same person. We'll do anything for this team. You know we'll die for our players and we'll give everything we got. Room together for four years correct? Yeah. Fall camp. Every room. Yeah. Sometimes go over there. So move over there. So yeah. I can meet one who's the messy one. We have our share of days when we when I'm neat he's neat or you know we might both be messy but we do a good job. Yeah. I would probably say I would better kick the jack though.
Tony Gertman, Buck I Hell. When you're playing a team for the second time and that was almost a season to go by now. How much of are you at square one with with this scouting and preparation or how much do you take from that game? How much do you avoid taking so that you don't have any pre-heat notions of what you're going up against on the offense. I say it's pretty 50-50. I mean that game like you said it was a while ago but at the same time they elevated as a team so did we. So we understand that they had they made some changes for sure. There's a certain density we can take back from that game but we also understand that they went on a low run after that and we can see that they elevated as an offense. So we just got to continue to watch those games dissect the other games and just continue to see what stands out and what they change from the past game. We got a couple calls on zoom that will wrap up with first we have Nick Hamilton from Nightcast Media. Nick? I just wanted to ask you basically about the synergy of this defense and how you guys were able to not only celebrate the triumphs but get through the adversity be able to be this top notch defense that you are in college football today.
Here you need to question one more time. I wanted to ask you about the synergy you are able to develop a course of the season obviously celebrating the triumphs but also getting through the adversity to where you are all the top notch defense that you are today. Yeah, I mean like you said that we went through a lot of trials to trials but there's also a lot of things we can take away from all the wins and losses. From those wins we understood that we can be the best defense in the country and from those losses we understand that there are still things that need to be fixed and I think when you take all that in at once they come down to the common goal or the common talk which is you can always learning points everywhere. And depending how we dissect those games or how we just continue to come as one elevate you know we continue to just collect all those learning points and just continue to grow from them. And one final question. Joey Coffin Columbus dispatch. JT what have you guys done better in the Tennessee game and just late in the season you think about turning some of the pressures that you've got on the quarterbacks and the sacks and getting home in some of those situations.
Yeah, I think it was more just understanding the defense as a whole understanding everybody's job thing as the season went on we had to understand that we have to know what's going on the back and we have to know what's going on the lineback recruit to understand what plays we have room of freedom and I think once we understood that and got a better understanding of everybody's job. I mean it showed this play because you know everybody else we're doing it's not like the lineback is no what they're doing the corners and be I they know only their job I think we all know each other's job and we continue to ask each other questions on you know if they're listening how they can get to the quarterback and you know if I'm dropping playing for backs back and as Cody on how to open field tackle so you know we just we just kind of lean on each other's understanding because you know like I said like Denzel knows how to play corner bend it and then I know how to play corner bend the ball. So you know he has more more wisdom at that position than I do. Thank you very much. I just want to team the win. I think we got a chance to win.
Definitely towards it and to stretch that last drive. I was a couple plays here a couple calls that you maybe should have gotten but I think the frustration more so it just comes from no one's going to win more anything. He said he was a little surprised how much attention you got right away from defense. How about you? Yeah definitely. We maybe killed a more one of ones kind of how the game play was set up. You didn't got a different coverage out of cloud to my side and this is kind of how the game goes. What's the process then? Sometimes where or whatever reason just just see that. Yeah definitely. Especially in college a lot of the game fans defensively were taking your life. You know we had a lot of success out of stay out of the way. One of the boys had a different weapons and kind of still get the victories and I was the only team to do better jobs doing it here. Why are you taking the game? The process has been like post game getting on the same page with Kyler. You guys exchange tax terms. Yeah I'm definitely kind of asking what did I see there and kind of go over and play.
I just kind of give him what I saw and kind of different feedback there. Mark I get it we're asking questions about the previous game bar. Are you the type of guy to let a game like that winger or how do you flush it? You got to move on got to move on. It's a long season guy. 16 more of them. Hopefully no I can stay healthy throughout the year and just continue building and get better each week. So it's so much work throughout the off season to get on the same page. How different is it when you get into that ring of the season? Yeah it's totally different. It's totally different. You can do a lot of things and shirts and shorts and then once you go out there and put practice and you got pads on. You do like the point practice we get with the colds but there's nothing like actually going out there and live action and really trying to get the same case. So I think that relationship will continue to develop and we'll get better. Is that it? It's just a matter of reps then. Yeah definitely definitely. Like I said I was kind of my first live action together. So it can continue to improve. What are your early impressions on the field together and what's your opinion on the previous game?
Yeah but now obviously I have a death certificate. JG's call or preseason and obviously be off to a really healthy. That's kind of the most important thing. I was thinking about what healthy is going for it. Marvin what are your early impressions of the Rams? What do you think of the Rams? Yeah I mean they're a good team. They're a good physical team. I got a new lot of new guys up front I think. That's kind of where they're strong to it is. Kind of a little different to Buffalo. Come over a little match coverage. So I'm excited to build this. Personally when the belts take taking one of my turns it's having fun today. Wasn't many of them. Wasn't many of them so Beth and I think I'm going to be good. I'm just what you think versus just playing. You know not getting a preseason game actually. Definitely thinking a lot out there. I think I'll come with reps. I think they're thinking less and just going out there and playing. Definitely come with reps and something you don't get better at. But definitely say I was thinking a lot out there. Is there anything you can do to improve that?
That's from coverage. Anything you can do to improve that? You're going to face that a lot obviously. Yeah I mean you just got to team you get open for yourself. Make yourself available. The one the ball does. He's just taking you away. I mean some other guys are having a chance to get open. That's not kind of how I look at it. It's no longer since the senior offense. That's the best thing of course. That kind of thing would be with Kyler. This is something that comes pretty quickly in a new game or something like that. Hopefully sooner or later I think. I'll continue to see. I don't think we're in a bad place right now at all. Obviously I don't really think that. But just the live reps will continue to grow and show. And how I believe maybe different than somebody else may believe. And how I like to practice. It's like a positive. You know what I mean. But the energy I would be on just like the beyond. So that's kind of how I want to be. Go on. I'm living my whole life. I felt like I was in a captain in high school.
I wasn't a captain in college. But I want to make a joke. I was in high school. I feel like I'm not going to be a captain like it's that I felt. But that would be awesome. But it happens I'd be great. But not either way. I want to assume the world as a captain from perspective of guys. I think the visual world. And to get back to that point. Yeah. I can't say that. And I guess the biggest thing is that I felt like how you used to move past. But it didn't take just the first LTAs. It took training and left and right. Once this season ended because I know what it was going to be. So I just went a lot of reps. Just to give back to feeling like myself for the LTAs. And then that whole first week. But now like today specifically just changing some small things with my feet. That is it.
Talking about the long coach. Some things I'm doing my feet to get to that. To sell that traditional angle that I love to sit on. I thought I felt great already. But I felt even better. Sorry. The more excited tomorrow now. I'm getting my feet back. And how I like the right side. And I'm on the left side. So long side. I mean, obviously I feel like in the league, whether I left the right, or you're still going against Premier Guy. So obviously, you're high expectations for the left and right tackle. But definitely the level of energy and like the expectation definitely take the human side. Because now tonight applies. That's the, that's the tackle world. So yeah, I would say in terms of communications far as this. Even outside of the facility. You just stuff like that. Really crazy. But the tackle quarterback. Bonnie, the more off the field, I think has been something that's even cool.
I got the text one day. Is that hey. Thank you. Well, I was like, you know, yeah, I've been training both. I've been training both. You know, I asked after the season there, like honestly, you know, we'll talk to you. So please season. And I just got the text. And I'm like, I'm having what happens with the free agency. And so I was like, you know, what? I had an O season right tackle. So if I get the word, I'm going, I'm standing right tackle. I'll do what I did before I'm built on that. Plus I was like, I might as well just train the left tackle now. As if I'm going to be left tackle. And I'd rather do that than train on right tackle with the club. I was like, who? I was like, I'm going to switch my feet. You know what I mean? So I'm like, let me just prepare an advance. I was like, yeah, it's God. You know, I think occasionally on third down, there would be a lot of twists. That was just not like it's automatically going. And I think that was my mindset for like the first half of the season. Like I didn't have to go into the game with surprise. Like, oh my gosh, I did that. I try to figure out, okay, like this is this is the type of rush.
I mean, again, this is how this guy usually rushes. Like get the vibe. This is how the ends like the rush, you know, tackles that first year guys. You got the premier patch on. I already know what it was going to be. I already know every step. And honestly, just knowing that's kind of an advantage to, so you're not, you're not, oh, the problems with my side. It was never airy-dommit. But it comes out the hot side. Three plays in a row. Two minutes. I knew that. I was in the way. I said a lot. You know what I mean? I'm watching more everybody else. And you really, you know, it goes out there occasionally. Third down, I was like, you know, I was like, are you going to pick me? You know what I mean? So, effect, effect. It's kind of, it's also kind of an advantage in a way. But it's also exciting, like, okay, I'm going to get the hardest look. You know, those are the real, real reps, you know, the bigs. And really, I went into kind of process. And I was like, hey, when they tell me, let me know about, I'm just going to train it. I was training all the way to TAs.
I guess if I didn't hear anything about TAs, I would have came in like, so, you know what I mean? Because just like, I'm cool with training both continuing. I would have been cool with training both continually. But I feel like anybody in any position will be like, okay, like, you want as soon as possible, to get your feet settled in, your hips settled in, your hands, so then, second half of that. Would it have been harder to get your work ball very healthy? No. You know. But they're definitely, but in terms of the development, it's definitely a lot faster to stay on one side. But I think having that week, we had the transitional season over, and the bike goes fine. You know, it would have been good, I'm trying to get up, put up my car and week things out of town right now. But when it comes back, I'm going to show them the one house. I've got a house that's not too far from, so I told them, I got that house, like a yellow side.
Like, these days. You know, I mean, so. Yeah. That doesn't have any stock or anything. Doesn't mean anything, so we had to play on Friday, and that's really all that matters. We're going to take two more from Zoom before turning it back. Our first one's going to come from Stephen from Cleveland.com. Go ahead. It's the fun, I'm sorry. Hey, Caleb, we've seen you were talking about the Ohio State Office, the success that they've had. Obviously, Jeremiah has been a big part of that. What's it been like this year going against him in practice, and, you know, after doing that, does it surprise at all to see him having a success he's had as a freshman? No, it doesn't bring surprises. It was pretty, pretty easy to see the talent that he has, and the blessings that God has put on his plate. But it's always a challenge going against Jeremiah and the other receivers who are going to be playing in the back end, and in practice,
and even guys like Brandon and his impression Rogers, they do a great job bringing lifts for the defense, and create a lot of obstacles. Our final question from Zoom is going to come from Dan Hope. Go ahead, Dan. Caleb, you've been had a lot of success against you guys when you played him at Alabama last year. Just what do you remember from going up against him last year, and what can you learn from that game? Really smart quarterback. He's got to operate their offense, push the ball in the right places, and then Coach Narkeeson does a great job putting him in positions to win. All right, back to you. Yep, thank you, Rob Aller. Columbus Dispatch, Caleb, JT and Jack Lannop, and obviously they are on in terms of personality and just the people they are. They're offices, but they're also like one of the closest people I know. They spend a lot of time together. They've come from different sides of the country, so they're different people for sure,
but they're both really great people, and really great men. I'm sorry, I respect both of them. Did you have the personality? How did you do that? I'm not going to do that. I'm sorry. I'm not going to do that. Throughout the season, we would always see you on Wednesday, night, two, and late, and we would be some of the last people off the field. Are the things that you're working on after a practice always the same? Is it a routine? What are the things that you're hoping to get out of those extra moments after practice? It's a routine, pretty much, the keys that we need to go into the game with, and then also changes week to week on based on what our jobs are going to put us into doing. So, every week we go through the same things, and then we add certain things that we do for the team that we play is going to ask us to accommodate. Bill, we're going to win. Pull him as dispatch. Yeah, I already got one here.
Oh, okay. Joe and Goplin, pull him as dispatch. Kill him. When Texas uses play action, and they use play action a fair bit, what do they do well in those spots? What's the key point you guys in those moments with Quinn? They do a really good job with IKANDY, and it creates a lot of challenges for defense in order to see if it's runner-path and see, because that's when they're going to take their shots too as well. So, really just having great eye discipline, seeing the line and seeing what it's telling us. So, that's what it is. Deep right, Nick Walker, Letterman, roll. Hey, look, you guys had a pretty good game plan for Tyler Warren, when you guys played him, you guys have another Texas has a good tight end and Gunnar Homme. What do you guys going to have to do to limit him and how do you think about his game? He's a really good player. He makes a lot of plays, and he has a lot of receiving yards this year. So, really just do the same thing we've done all year. Just be disciplined in our responsibilities, and if you're on them, you've got to make a play when it comes.
Right, one of the main drillists. Clayman.com. When you look at their receivers as kind of a whole, they spread ball around a season. What stands out about the way that they can spread ball around those different guys? A lot of really good athletes. I play with Isaiah Bond, last year, who's a really great receiver, a lot of speed. And then all their receivers have made a lot of plays. So, I mean, everybody has to be on that peasy queue as if we're going to stop them and have a do a really good job. From everyone here, Tim May, Letterman, roll. Yeah, Kale, you moved up here, and I don't have to get to tell you when you moved it, basically a year ago. It was a little bit of a leap of faith, because you know how many athletes are on this team, and get athletes to stuff. But when did you really feel this defense come into its own? And then, past that, man, watching in Rose Bowl, your recognition of what was coming seemed to be on point. Did it feel like that? I mean, you personally. I think the defense has played really well throughout the season.
I think we've had games where we played better, and games where we haven't put it all together. But I think that's how all defenses are. So I can't say there's a certain moment where I think we put it together. But what's your second party question? You seem really on point against Oregon about recognizing what was coming. I mean, you were really active out there directing and things like that. Did it feel like that? I feel like, as Luke said earlier, the preparation that we put in goes into that and just feeling comfortable and what we're doing, comfortable, and what we're seeing with the other teams. I feel like that allows us to play fast and me and Laketon to communicate to everybody else. Do I miss anyone's questions here? Steve, how long have you been playing in the sports? Yeah, Caleb, but you came to Ohio State to play for National Championship, and there were a lot of ups and downs throughout the season. Just to be in this position, the last four teams still alive. You feel validated by that,
and did you always have faith that this is out that was going to turn out? I came to Ohio State to become a better player and to help the team be as good as it can be, not to win a National Championship. Like that wasn't the only goal for me coming here. I really just wanted to be in the team and be with the brotherhood. But it's a great feeling being in the final four and being with the team and everything that comes with that. It's a blessing to be here. And one final question, Bill, where Ben wants to play this game? I did want to follow up. When I talked to you at the after the game, you said, when they scored their first and second touchdown, you were really hot on the sidelines. What was your message to the team? That's a good off, that's their going to score against most teams. Why were you so hot? Really just because we didn't execute, which let them score. So we've done that a lot, which is something we can't do in these big games and these games where it's when I go home. So we got to make the plays when they come and get our competitive excellence as Coach Dases make the play where your number's called.
Caleb, thank you very much. I feel like they're definitely picking up quick. I mean, I was in their shoes one time and I had Zach Harrison, Javonte, Tyler Friedell, I'm trying to be one of those peers that they work for me and kind of just giving them the steps to get there. And I feel like they're definitely picking up quick and they're definitely going to be one of the great rushmen. So, I think Coach Johnson's talking about it. JT and Zach probably need it. It's not a big spirit. So you have some real opportunities for you to be able to do a lot of things. Is there a difference in the work going that you've been getting through after the chance when you're in the last couple? I feel like all the camps I've definitely got in a big course load and I love that. Coach J4, I love getting more reps because I just like protecting my craft. So, I mean, some people may not need it, some people need it, but I mean, it's like he has me right beside me. I feel like he's big on that course load. So what's on right there? I mean, for me, it's always just kind of getting my little details perfectly, like my steps, my footing,
kind of just perfecting my toolbox as well as what we call it, my craft, and just trying to be a second winner every place we're trying to do. We're going to take our biggest success and we're going to take our biggest success. We're going to take our biggest success. We've seen what we've just got in the water this morning. Yeah, I'm definitely just getting stronger, faster, everything all they've got, but one of my big things is being a leader and kind of just not trying to look still look up to Jack and JT and kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into it. So I feel like we kind of have a lot of leaders on the D-line and we have to be in position so we kind of all kind of just count off the children. That's a bit of tough for me to go through. So I hope you guys play with the ball and keep it on the table and just try to keep it. What do you need for those guys? What does that transition mean? We love it. We all competitive people. We all love to fish together. And I feel like the spring and the best side of all is we're all just kind of bouncing off each other and seeing what one person does and the kind of better than the archival box
and we all kind of just kind of build one great thing. You have a role last year and you have to get the shot of the full back in the vlog. And the day of proxies that I dare to do I'm not going to get caught up in. Because you heard checks on your vlog. It gives a test back. So I definitely didn't in high school. I was full back and a little bit of tidying. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there and coach Wilson. So he left watching it too before he left. And he played that seed in Coach Day's head and Coach Day kind of just went for it and tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that continuing now? Do you need anything in the screen? New playbook. I do not know yet. I haven't got that far. How tough was that for you? You're looking back. I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any professional field you need me to. Just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and try to do my best for you. Kit Jack, you're the same thing. Oh yeah. And what about what? Graphically, that's what.
He's just talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of sought you and got out to have some conversations. After JT and Jack decided to come back. Just went ahead and went into those and respected them. And how did that help people be good? The right mindset I guess. Definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it. How long the season is now. What you got to do to prepare for and what happened in all that time from here to to then. So I feel like we definitely just coached in. We kind of connected. And we kind of just talked man-to-man and just sat straight to me. And I feel like we kind of both have been on this. And we know we're making it. We're making each other better every day. We've got the four best DNs, five best DNs, honestly, in the college football. And we're going to be one of the best DLines in college football. But you feel like the better player today than you were in this season. I feel like I'm taking big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader.
And kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and I feel like we kind of helping out more. How do you record your head around the past to see the TKFC? That's how you get to see the best. I mean, it sounds bizarre, but I mean, the season goes by so fast already. So I mean, you're kind of like week 10 in. You're like, wow, it's already week 10. So now it's kind of, it keeps you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it. Because you've come already here for the freshman's place, praise me. It's here once been on your powder for the first month of the year, right? There is a, not pace yourself there. I mean, there is a light set. Yeah, definitely. Definitely going to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys around the game? Last question right here. Okay, 16, 2017, four NFL D-French and Orange, so much as he talked about that. I mean, he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become. So we know we're right at the same,
we're at the right place at the right time. And God wanted us to be here and be new. We wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together at some discussion. Great. Doing it, what were the deliberations? I'm surprised it's even a conversation. Like, it should always be live. Let's tell you. Tell you. Tell you, tell you play football. So obviously there's a proximity to the season which is a little reckless, I understand that. But in spring, we're competing for jobs. I mean, if I'm a quarterback, I'm messing with you live. So I can show him how I'm different than, you know, anyone that can't be live. You know what I mean? You're always trying to find an edge. And if you're never fully alive, I don't think you fully give guys opportunity to be who they want to be or who they can be. So that being said, you know, I will cast my vote. But that will not be my final decision on that. But I will cast my vote. I think I can handle it well.
It was good for all parties involved. And more we can do that, the better. But I'm sure that is coming to a close here very quickly. So. At Murphy, twenty percent. Right. General Maya off the field, we saw after practice on Saturday that the mob that came to get autographs and things. When you're working with him on all these things you're talking about, but also dealing with the life of being one of the biggest names in college football, how do you help mentor him in that aspect? Yeah, I mean, it's a blessing to be able to be in a position where, you know, can provide insight or I wouldn't say recommendations, but just give perspective. How he chooses to receive the perspective or not one and not me. He always does, but which is fine. But to be in that position is really humbling. That being said, he does a really good job on his own. He doesn't need to check the one too much. He's really done a great job.
Again, the way he was raised and his morals and humble would always sign and taking pictures. I'm always trying to be the bad guy for him because he's not going to be. And just says again more about his character. But he's not the only guy. Any guy would kind of do that. We have a group full of awesome young guys, but General Maya has done a great job with it, handling it. And it's definitely growing at an exponential rate to say the least. But I think he's built for it and he's been handled at a high level. But those around him were trying to help him out a little bit. What made Quincy the first freshman to do this black track mission? Oh, yeah, I mean, that's a good question. I think that, you know, frankly, you know, I don't, I'm not really fully evolved of it. So I can be, but I wasn't. You know, I think that people on the outside would be defense or even coach day
or anybody brought it to my attention. You know, we're kind of just going about practice and that's our expectation and make plays, not make mistakes. And he was starting to make a lot of plays consistently. I think the consistent level that he's been as a person, being on time and doing his job description on each play and the ball is coming their way and making some big plays. And, you know, it starts, it starts being seen by your peers. And your peers are asking for it. They start barking, getting a stripe off all those kind of things. That's the ultimate sign of respect. I think with your peers, you know, go to your bat. And he's not going for his bat. No one, no, people are bringing it to your position coach. I think it speaks volumes of the general respect that you're earning through the process. So I think it's something like that happened. And, you know, as well as there are based on his peers and the other coaches. Step on the christianekleadland.com. Ryan Day was talking about how impressed he's been this spring with Austin Sarewell. All that he's been able to do and Tyler Bohn was talking last week about the importance of the cross-training and all that that goes into that.
How much have you seen Austin benefit from this spring and everywhere that he's been? And how big of a piece do you think he's going to be regardless of where he fits on this offensive line? Yeah, I think Austin's been awesome. I mean, he literally, you know, what was they say? He played every split, every position. We just move around, you know, and he handles it. And, you know, he's one of those guys. I feel like he watched film over and over again day after day. His name never really gets brought up, you know, in a good way. Like you know, the old line, your name gets brought up when usually not going as well, you know, I mean, they're literally at the point of the tack on every single play. So there's nowhere to hide. And so, but Austin, when his name gets brought up, he's like, man, that was a good job. A good job. A good job. Pass off that combo. Whatever. It's always positive. And they're really impressed with him. He started in the winter. They did a great job through the winter. Again, continuing to build their respect for his peers. And then he's going to a good job. Really good job just being very consistent through spring. Our left, Jeff Gilbert, press pros. Brian, since you've been working more with the whole offense, when it comes to quarterback play,
what has grown in your, I don't know, appreciation of that position and what those guys have to do and go through? What do you think more about those guys versus maybe what he thought before is just a wide receiver guy? Yeah, I mean, I mean, there's no just a wide receiver guy. If you are just a wide receiver guy, you won't be a very late or long. It's all about quarterback play, you know, so I think in that same world, though, to the point is that, you know, it would be a great receiver or a great receiver or receiver guy, whatever you want to call it. There's only one page, just the quarterbacks page. So everything is based off them. Whether they're progression, they're timing the stresses they have is what we're trying to minimize. So if you don't fully understand the quarterback play, it's hard to maximize receiver play, I think. That being said, yeah, I'm still always learning. I think that I can't say any is jumped out massively right now, but I would say that, you know, I guess I would say that the preparation level, I mean,
the what is required to execute and play at a high level, it's just not capable in the a lot of time, right? I mean, there's only so much time where I'd be with players. If you're not willing to spend, you know, your own time, getting prepared for practice, to be to maximize one's ability. There's a good chance you're not going to maximize your ability. So, you know, other positions, I mean, aligns, same thing. I mean, receiver play sometimes can, can, you know, get away from it. We do a great job studying and being in the room extra for sure, but the requirement of a quarterback to know the fixed protections, the BR run game coordinator based on the calls, you know, gives them different checks. I mean, there's so much they need to know. And frankly, the, you know, the online is good as the quarterback. The receiver's going to the quarterback. They're often silly as the quarterback. And it's our responsibility to put guys in position to maximize with their capable of maximizing, but their inability to notice that they can just spend extra time outside the a lot of time. I think it's critical. And the amount that it takes, I guess, that was maybe a little naive to, but the guys are doing a great job doing it.
Just a couple more coaches got a meeting. Rob all our Columbus dispatched Brian. You know, get reached the mount top. You got a banner out there national champs. I think keep these guys grounded. Being in the moment, looking ahead. Not back. Are you tougher on them? Because no, I think that I mean, I think we have a lot of guys. You know, I think it's understanding that we were trying to build the map to get to where you wanted to get to. But now that we have the map doesn't mean we've traveled the path. So like we know what it looks like. The guys that are here know what it's supposed to look like. The guys before us, standing on the blue, we'll example how to get to where you want to get to. So the focus is on trying to replicate what they just did and how they operated. Can't say we've done that right now. So it's very easy to stay motivating because they already know it's not good enough, frankly. And so the last thing they want to do is put in a ton of effort and then not reach their goals. So motivation. I don't think is needed. I think there is a catching up of those and maybe aren't quite sure what it takes.
You know, but overall, motivation is not what we've needed. A clarity of message is definitely what we've been focused on and I think the message is being received. So not concerned about, you know, motivation and looking back, if you will, I think everyone's pretty pretty focused on being forward and knowing we haven't accomplished anything. Steve, who would you say is the leader of your water see right now? I would say Cornell Tate, Brandon and his pride done the most, the most outspoken, you know, in the room. Yeah, I would say they're doing a good job. Those are probably the two guys that would jump out my room. Yep. Brandon, he's been in trouble. Obviously. Cornell taking on that role. More and being more vocal. He's a good football player. I was interested in doing that, but that process for him and becoming a more vocal leader to bring you to say that on him. What's the question? What do you think like the growth part of it? Yeah, I mean, he's I think he's pulled guys aside, you know, it had one-on-one conversations with him.
He's locked in, you know, just I think he saw the impact that I make him made and the role he played and to think that you're going to lose that and then be a better group. Part of the math math makes sense to him. So someone's got to set up in that role and one, I don't want to respect them too. He knows he's capable of it and it's just the desire and the appreciation, I think, to be at the order table now and the overhead and appreciate the way I met him probably went about his business. So he probably valued that, appreciated that and he's just being sure we still have that. Final question. Bill Rebellt, what's the bonus this time? Could you assess the running back room? I think it's pretty much assumed both as running back to CJ and James. I think that's hand in the system is probably the way you've got to go again. How do you think of how is it working and you see third and maybe fourth guys up in the mirror? I think that, you know, college football, NFL football, any football really you got to have depth in running back room. I think that very apparent in the NFL.
It's usually a two back system, you know, very fairly is it one guy, but in college, I think we saw the benefit of that last year. The ability to compliment each other is really important. The ability for us to identify what they do great and put them in good positions to be what they are. What they're best at, I should say, is really important as a coaching staff. It's been very impressed with even the younger guys Sam and in a bow and the way they've come along. Consistency. So what you're chasing right you're always able to that's why you're here, but how often you do it ultimately dictates how much you play. So, but overall, I think locksmen on them, they'd understand the standard and in past pro and not being a guy we got to sell them out because you can't pass protect. So we were blessed, especially with tray last year and in Quenchon. But no, these guys are going to a good job. They're competing. They've been very coachable. It's shown a plot on film. But yeah, I mean, it's always hard on backs. I mean, every opportunity you get to go live and break tackles really gives you the most feedback on what these guys are capable of.
You're just playing tag out there. You never get any art. At least you shouldn't. But the running backs on contact days have done a good job. James has done a really good job growing. Really excited about him. Everyone's really excited about him and CJ. So, you know, I think ultimately how group the how will all go with the group be is probably based on, you know, the top, the bottom rising. Right. You're gonna have some guys at the top, but you know, where's the floor. And so I think bow and Sam has done a really good job. And many some more guys to get healthy. More guys on campus, but very encouraged. And you saw him improve. And then McLean, I think, is a great plus. I mean, he is a guy that has football intelligence. He's picked it up. You know, he's kind of one of those incoming freshmen who still should be in high school. He's a guy I think you're going to point to and you can see right now he's going to be a player over to the right Austin Ward, the podcast.
A healthy Mitchell Melton. How does he fit in for your defense? What does he bring to it? Yeah, he's, you know, Mitch is that combination player, you know, in our four down. You know, he's a guy that can do a lot of things, drop fold in there and make plays. You see some of that all the time. Really athletic. You know, we're kind of loaded at that end position. So he's going to play there. But you know, like I said last year, we, we haven't needed it. But he's a guy you would point to along with CJ Hicks, you know, for the for the long season. People get injured. You get a little light inside. It's always hard on the defensive tackles. But if you're going to play with three ends, you know, that's Mitch is a guy who definitely can do all that. He has that. Over to the left, Joey Kaufman, Columbus dispatch. Jim, you've talked about this before, but I think in past years where you're going up against a really talented receiver group offense
to encourage your players to, it's not okay if they give up the play and to go nearly almost the first half today where you, the offense didn't get them the end zone until the late in the second half. Just and you guys have guys down the second area. Just what did you think of that sort of trend and how it's evolved in the way you guys almost shut them out of the first half? Yeah, I think it's become, you know, an expectation now. You know, our DB's, you know, our BIA, best in America, we led the country in past defense. I think it was 96 when I got here and it was number one last year. So they've taken that spirit. So it's a competitive spirit. It's an expectation now. It doesn't matter who we're going against. It's, they view it as a standard. So that was good to see in the first first half. Over to the right Spencer Holbrook, Vladimir and Roll. Jim, we've talked about safety changing the way that you play defense and the Leo and the linebackers, but how much does having the depth that you guys have a defensive tackle change the way that you can do things defensively?
Yeah, I mean, you're going to play to your strengths, you know, and that's, that's my job is to what do we have and what do we do best? And when you have defensive tackles, but I've said it before, it helped our defense so much last year when you have defensive tackles that actually make tackles, which is what we have right now. It changes the way you call a game. You know, it certainly helps you be in better shape on explosive plays on the back end. You don't have to do a whole lot to help those guys out because they're making tackles. So you got to go, you got to go with that. You know, you got to let those guys play and, and they're good. So you can't get too far away from the scheme of having those defensive tackles make place because they're doing it and it works. Over to the left, Tony Gerberman, Buckeye Huddl. Jim Ryan talked about the quarterback run being more of a thing with the offense here during the season. How much of when you're facing a team like that, how much does that impact your day to day throughout the week preparing for that?
Yeah, it's a ton, you know, it, I think it changes everything you do on defense. You see it everywhere from the NFL on down if you have a quarterback who can make plays with his feet. Your scheme better be designed that, you know, to, to take that away into account for it. So it changes the way you look at everything when you're game planning. Thank you, Donovan. Over here to the right. Tim May, the Tim May podcast. Yeah, Jim, you might be doing it right when I asked Ryan about just, for example, Calvin Simpson, Hunt, but the corner scene did be playing almost with the chip owner, shelter to a certain extent. David, Sonig, but no, son, took the day personally. It looked like you know, to make us some of the height going into the game, but what, what do you see from that group in particular that? Who is you going into this off season? Yeah, when you can, when you have corners that you can count on, again, it's just like having defense of tackles in the run game. When you have corners, you can count on that are going to compete all the time, no matter what the situation is.
And we've developed that again, it changes the way you call the entire game. I mean, you, you're able to leave those guys on an island. You're able to switch out converges and they know what they're doing and they take great pride in it. So having those guys out there in the development, it's a big deal. It really is. And it's not just an issue a little bit more. I was just giving it light back a little bit. Yeah, I mean, he's, he did come in late and you know, he compete, he's one of those guys that just competes every day, doesn't say much. You know, he's trying to live up to the standard of the other guys and you see him coming along. You know, you see him step by step coming along and you know, put him in a, you know, competitive atmosphere, same step up, that's a great sign. And final question for coach Knowles, Dan Hope, 11 Warriors. You mentioned CJ Hicks a few minutes ago. Have you seen him take the strides you need to see the spring to trust him as a guy who could be a potential starter on his defense?
Yes, I mean, I think CJ has shown that he has talent and I think it's my job to put him in the best situations for him because he can be a force. You know, he's much better when he's bloodsaying or he's directed because he's able to use his athletic ability, but he has certainly shown that he's going to be able to help this defense coach. Thank you very much for your time. All right. And we will bring offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Chip Kelly to the podium now. We'll open up the questions over to the left bill Rebenowitz Columbus dispatch. Chip, what are your just general impressions of the offense coming out of spring, especially at quarterback? We'll look at all 15. So I think, you know, this day is is a big part of it, you know, because it was the first time they were going to play some of those guys that were going to play in front of a crowd.
And it was an amazing crowd. You know, 80,000 for spring game. Now you could see some of the young guys kind of looking around like, wow, this is different than the indoor. But that's what they have to get ready to play it. So we got better from practice one practice 15. You know, it's still an evaluation through the whole process, but it's not something in the players, though, too, that we want to make a decision walking off the field today. And hey, this is the direction that we're going in. We'll be very authentic and look through everything and make sure that we get a really good feel for what it all looks like and then who will best move this offense. That's what our decision is going to be. What do I do? I think we got a lot of guys there. That part's tough. I think because you got it. There's guys that deserve reps, you know, and they're all competing for it. So, you know, sometimes you'd like to be sometimes when you had a guy who was an initial starter, well, he's going to get the bulk of the reps. He got him better. They capitalize on it. We really rolled him. You know, if you were at some of our screen practices, you're watching all those guys rotate and rotate out. And as we talk about all the time, you know, the old adges is don't count your reps, make your reps count. You know, we'll put it all together and really come up with, you know, which guy do we really feel is going to help us move this offensively.
Over to the far right, Bill Landis, the podcast, Kings of the North. Hey, Chip, you said when we first talked to you that the basis of a lot of your success running the football just kind of figuring out what your guys do best and then leading into that over 15 practices now, how good of a field. Do you think you have for that? And then what did the next few months look like as you try to piece that all together? Really good question. It's interesting because the one thing that I think sometimes makes tough and an evaluation is what a good front we want to get. You know, so for 15 practices, those guys on the other side of the ball were pain, you know, Jack and JT and Ty Lee can those guys. But I know come fall. There's not going to be anybody more happy that we have those guys on the defensive side of the ball because of what they can do. I still think we'll have to really evaluate that what we're going to what we're not what we got to get better on what we got to work on. But I think the work we got against such a quality defense was really key for us. Over to the far left, Nathan Barrett Cleveland dot com.
So you were going this time. It came out of the spring with still a lot of question marks about the offensive line. And even I guess that last season came out with question marks. What have you seen that progress in the time that you've been here and what's your confidence level that that offensive line is going to allow this offense to do everything it wants to do this fall. Yeah, I mean, I've been here short amount of time. So I didn't know. I really don't have anything to compare to. So I kind of tabular rassa come in with a blank slate and just observe it. I think we're really athletic. I think that in and in Seth and those guys inside are really smart and really intelligent. They allow you to to be able to make adjustments in game. Just talking football with some of those guys. It's like, well, these guys are wired the right way and a lot of those guys have played a lot of football. So they can bank on their experience. I think we've got about four guys that have played significant amount of snaps and we've got to make sure we can find out who the fifth guy is. But that's similar to where the quarterback spot is. I think. And I also think of the offensive line. You're not going to play a 16-17 game season and just playing five guys. You really have to develop your depth there.
There's going to be a number two center that's going to play a lot of football. There's going to be a number two guard, whether it's on either side of the ball. There's going to be a third tackle. I think you're going to get tested, especially with this new in this new playoff format. You really have to think that way. So you're not looking for five starters. You're really looking for 10 starters because you're going to have to. You're going to have to probably play 10 guys to get when you get through a 16-17 game season. Over to the right Austin Ward, the podcast. I think it was the first play of the game. The T formation and then the reverse spin move with Will Howard. What's the inspiration for that package and that sort of wrinkle with the quarterback? Mr. Hayes. There's a looming figure around this whole program. We get to go to work every day and then Woody Hayes Athletics Center. It was good enough for Woody. We're going to steal it. We're going to do it. We ran some last year. I think we took 21 snaps at UCLA and T. We've got a short yardage formation for us and we've done some different things with it. I also think our players had a lot of fun practicing that and doing some different things.
It's a small part of our offense. We will not be in the T21 times in one game. We may get it in some short yardage situations. I think it's come back. There's a lot of schools right now that are starting to do that. You've got a half a yard to get. You're trying to get your big guys in the game. I think we use three tight ends and two running backs in our formation today with Packard being the full back in that situation. There's a lot of different things you can do with your yardage. But a little bit of a tribute to Coach Hayes and what he means to this program. Joey Kaufman. Columbus dispatch over to the left. What's the difference between the two teams that you've been here two months, 15 spring practices? You feel best about what you've been able to accomplish with this offense? Well, I haven't accomplished anything because I didn't take a snap. I think the most impressive thing since I've been here is how close this football team is. Some programs talk about the brotherhood. This is really a brotherhood. Our practices, as we talked about, how good our defense is. They're highly competitive but they're not combative.
They're both the old line and the secondary and the receivers. The competition is the best there is in the country. That makes you better. But I think sometimes competition guys can lash out and get really combative. Then all of a sudden the fight breaks out and the fight breaks out. We're trying to accomplish and get footballed on them. But I think the way these guys cooperate and work together as a group is a special bond. I think you're going to need the closest team and the most connected teams on the ones that win. Over to the right here. Andy Baxter from Letterman Rol. Jay, obviously there's been a lot of talk about Jeremiah but Ameca is the big returner in this group. He kind of reminded everyone what he can do today. What's it been like working with him and what kind of weapon can he be for you guys? Good point. And Ameca has reminded me and the other 14 practice sessions of what he can do. Special player. And J.J.'s are really talented player also. But I think all of the whole group, a Cornell tape, did some really good things watching him this spring. And for all of them, I mentioned it with the offensive line. I came in with a blank slate. I had no opinions formed. Not that really just wide. I didn't just observe them.
But I think that wide receiving is really special. And I think there's a bunch of guys in there. And again, you have to play multiple games after the regular season is over. You're going to make sure you're going to need depth like that. And the fact that you feel a little bit comfortable right now. We got some guys there that can make some plays in the perimeter. And that really dictates how people are going to defend you. So you got a couple of really good running backs. Are they going to load the box? Are you really going to load the box and leave those guys in one on coverage? Well, then it's the quarterback responsibility to decipher that and get the ball to those guys. Or do they list a double coverage? They list a double coverage. And now it's a little bit lighter boxing. You can run the ball. So having too many weapons is a good problem to have. I can roll F, Pat Murphy, 24-7 sports. Chip, we've talked a lot about the quarterbacks maybe vying for the starting spot. But some of the younger guys, what have you seen from them? We got an opportunity to see more of them today than we probably have. What's your assessment of them as they get in this?
I always am so impressed with young guys that enroll early in watching how they get acclimated and what they do. When you look at Julian and Air and JJ, they should be in the hot lunch line of their high school. And they're out here playing in front of 80,000 people. And they've really progressed when you watch them in meetings and listen to them. And they interpret. So basically the whole concept here is we throw them in the deep end and see if they can swim. We didn't maybe anything. We don't put the install in with, hey, you guys are in install. We're in install. This with the older players. And then you guys, you know, go sit at the kitty table and we're just going to do the really simple things with you. You know, they get it all in the more they can digest the more when you're in a room, when you're checking for understanding and asking questions. And they can spit back to you the more confidence you have when they get in there with the plays that you can call for them. So those guys have been in process. They're still learning, you know, they were the guys today that were kind of looking around and saying,
you know, I just like 80,000 people here along with the offensive coordinator in the quarterback coach because I was kind of looking around because I had actually never been in the stadium until yesterday when we had our 14th practice in there. So I played Ohio State once when I was at Oregon, but that was in the Rose Bulls. I had never been actually in the stadium until yesterday. So I caught myself when I went into the stadium today looking around saying 80,000 for spring. Again, that's impressive. Got time for just a few more folks over here to the right Dylan Davis Delaware Gazette. Given what you just said about throwing them into the deep end, what stood out the most about Julian's progression through 15 practices and where he is as you guys head out of spring. Julian is a very fast processor. You know, he really thinks very, very quickly on his feet like he makes really quick decisions. He doesn't stick on and read, he can progress in any ceasing. It's really well for a young player, you know, in not having been exposed to a lot of college defenses. And especially what Jim does, you know, Jim can make Jim can make a young freshman quarterback cry with some of the stuff he does.
But you know, I never saw that with Jules and I that's been impressive his his ability to retain and, you know, him and JJ, the compliment I would say to him is if you got here and you didn't know what class they were in, you wouldn't say that those guys are freshmen in terms of how they've picked things up and, you know, sometimes freshmen, act like freshmen. But the guys who are special, they don't act like freshmen, you know, they act like football players and those are two guys that are examples of that. Far left Cameron T. Robinson, the athletic chip, you on the topic of freshman James peoples and Sam got on the second half. Yeah, you talk about how deep you need to be in this era of college football. But as you search for RB three, what did you see from them today and what is what is their growth been like in this spring? Yeah, James really flashed early for me, not knowing again, kind of, let's just take don't worry about what the background is where they're from, who they are. The this guy of this stars, this guy of that stars, it's they're all bakais and there's how they do it. I think James has got really good feel and vision. He can hit things.
My thoughts and it's really good things today. T.C. is another guy who really came along during the spring and work constantly talking in our staff meetings about that. We're very cognizant of the fact that the playoff situation has changed. So you have to develop that depth, you know, used to be maybe have a parent of spare was what everybody says, but I think you may have to have more than that. You're talking about 16, 17 games. You're really going to be tested that way. So I was really happy with how those young guys have come along here in the 15 training sessions that we've had. Oh, here to the right. Tim made the Tim May podcast. Thank you, Jerry. You have your own podcast. Yeah. Like these guys all had like a name next to their. Yeah, I like it. It's not just the lunch last hot lunch last hot lunch. Yeah, just too quick. He's number one. Do you feel compelled to let these quarterbacks know where they stand? You know, it's coming up Tuesday. You know, to me.
Yeah, you know, where does that go? I mean, in your mind, they were all sit down as a staff and visit me on it. And then nine. I mean, he does an unbelievable job of I think all our players understand where they fit and what what the picture is and we'll give them our assessment. This isn't. You know, we're not going to come back. But we do it after every day. They know where they stood after practice. One after two after three after four. We grade everything. They're getting constant feedback in terms of where we are. And then after 15, which we had today, but we can't do it unless you watch the film. And can can really look at the things because you may see something, but you're on the sideline. You know, why did he make that decision? Well, I couldn't really see the field safety from where he was. Okay, now I understand why you made that decision. So, you know, what, but they'll meetings with all our players. And that's that's always been the method. So this week during, you know, between one day through Friday, we're all scheduled. No one's going on the road to recruiting until after that. But we're all a player meeting at every position. You know, offensive line defensive line linebacker safety is everybody. Everybody's going to sit down with their position coaches and know where they fit. And we see them. Do you feel a pressure with the transfer portal looming? I mean, you've been a head coach for a long time. I mean, is that on your mind at TSD? Yeah, I think all the words you got aware of it. I'm 100% and I don't think it's pressure. But I think you just open lines of communication and everybody knows, you know, which what your evaluation was through the training sessions that we have.
We got to have real quick. Last two questions. Dan Hope and then Rob Aller. Feel like you need to have a starting quarterback named by and whatever the biggest things you're going to be looking for between now and then and determining who that guy's going to be. Well, between now and whatever then is we're not allowed as coaches to go back out and practice with him. You know, in college football, you get 15 training sessions in the off season. And then they'll go back to work and with Mick in the weight room and getting bigger, getting faster, getting stronger. They'll have organized activities themselves. And they do a really good job of that. But once there's a football out, like we're not allowed to be there to evaluate and even assess. So they're really from a football standpoint on their own until August. So you always want to do it earlier. But I also believe every time I've been involved in this is that it kind of happens organically and authentically. Because the players know if you say we decided we're going to be with Joe and they all think it's Tim. They're in the locker room with him every day. Players understand who they'd feel is the guy. And most of the time the decision is very obvious.
You know, when you just say, this is where we are with it, you know, but there's that timetable thing. I don't I can't give you an exact timetable on that. So Rob chip, you talk about Julian, but typically in your experience, you've done again, like Tim said a long time. How long does it take for the game to slow down for a young QB? I think it depends on the individual. You know, I've had some kids. We're early, you know, you're like, wow, Marcus Murray, I was like that. Remember vividly second practice. He got to the fifth reading the progression and threw it out here in this big game. And I asked him why I do it all. I asked why, because I just want to understand it. And I said, why did you do that? And he goes, I don't know what we call that defense, but there was like a lot of guys over there. And they didn't seem like there was anybody over there, but for him to process that that thought he was right. And he came back the other day, whether that was cover 60 other day coach, I learned what you guys call the coverage is. But it all happens differently.
I've got guys that for two years seem like they're just, you know, they're really struggling. And then the light bulb goes off and you know, whoa, like they got it. So everybody has different learning styles, you know, our job in the evaluation process is to identify those learning styles. So you know, they cognitive learn, they an auditory learner, you know, do they learn by field? Is it more a field guy, you know, a more film guy, you know, it's all different. And I think we have to keep poking and prodding in in in for us as coaches, that's the challenge too is what is their best learning style and how can we convey it? Because education basically is just a transportation knowledge. But it really doesn't matter what I know or what Ryan knows, it matters what they know. So that's that's always kind of what we're working on and study it and thinking about and kind of where we are and how much can they handle and then how much is too much, you know, because this may be a great play. I agree 100%. But if he don't feel it's a good play, then then why is it in you know, I mean, and that's that's this whole feeling of process that we're all they're learning us and we're learning them.
So, this is have identities, so to coaches really, running quarterbacks, is that something you've always sort of lean toward or is it a year by year case by case? What advantages do you like about it? Because all your guys can run a little bit. Yeah, I think a running quarterback causes problems for defense. So when when plays break down the unscheduled plays, you know, if you just go back to the recent Super Bowl. On that last drive, the two big plays were my home's run. The picture my home is not a runner. And he's not calling design quarterback runs for Pat. But when the defense matches up and plays two men and turns their back to the quarterback, well, maybe the best decision is to take off. You know, the second one he took out, I'm like, he may score. You know, a lot of guys go and they want a hook side, you know, and and there's times where you have to understand if you do have a running quarterback, we talk about the best of the best ability is availability. You know, you're not lowering your children, taking people on, but we are always looking for quarterbacks that have the ability to run.
We're not looking for running backs that can throw, you know, so you're not going to see us. Twenty times a game will run in the quarterback. There are people that run offensive styles and are really successful with it. But with this group we have right now, that's not now they can hurt you with the feet will did it when he was at case date, you know, obviously, Devon took off a couple times today air took off a couple times today. Lincoln's a really, really good athlete. Julian can run, but you know, we're not calling design quarterback runs, you know, you're not going to see. You know, I tremendous respect for coach Hayes and the legacy that he left here. The straight T is about as far as we go. We are not going single wing. So we are not going to snap in and run quarterback ice on quarterback power. But it is a it's another weapon, you know, and if it also keeps defenses honest, you know, three defensive and it's going to continue to bend from the quarterback, closing the edge and he's getting first downs. Well, then the defensive and has to stay outside and contain the quarterback. Well, then we can run the ball up and hand the ball off sometimes in our running game or quarterback really is a blocker.
He's responsible for a defender if the defender was cheating and fitting it on the run. Well, then his responsibility is to make make the defense be honest. And that's really aired. Did that a couple of times today. We had a block that safety was sticking his face in there. So we took off around the edge. What happens in the next play the defense is wider than what we get to do. You can't stay in the ball off the run. Great coach. Thank you so much for your time and thank you for being a buck. I was definitely addressed here. You know, this pretty easy. I think Austin, Sarah, they'll stepped up in a big way, you know, with Donnie being out. And then, you know, Carson can play both guard and center, which is good. And, you know, we've actually, you know, sent us done a nice job as well. But it was good to see Austin, you know, he moved from guard to tackle a couple times and even with the ones who's in their battle is tail off. So I think we have built some depth there. But again, you know, we got to go play some games and see what. Rob all right. What's the main thing you want to see out of the old line?
Yeah, you know, again, whether it's whatever happened last year is last year, but I know that the message to our. To our offensive line is we want to play. I want to be the hardest playing offense line in the country. Now we got to play with technique. But at the end of the play, like knock the line of screaming back and play with your hair on fire. It's hard as you possibly can. There's a lot to go with the play in the offensive line. It's all a communication. There's a lot of things that have to get into place. I think chef has done a nice job of communicating and it seems the offense better now takes control up front and brings everybody together, which is great. But to me, like that's it. Now we could list a bunch of other things, but to me, we've got to move the line of screaming. We've got to be just playing with our hair on fire and knocking people back and playing physical. And that's the start to game. That's the end. This is a destination spot for privacy. We can do it. We'll see that. Definitely. How do you get over that? No, no, I don't see it that way at all. I think. You know, we'll see what we got this year, but I feel like, you know, we've got some really good young players in the system. I think that we should have the best offensive line in the country. That's that's the standard here has been for a long time.
And, you know, and so we'll keep pushing towards that this year. And, you know, I think, you know, everybody in that room, it's the same thing. Tony Gerbin. How's the situation? Will linebacker? Sure. Right now. Yeah. So, uh, sunny has really stepped up and played well. He's made this transition from safety to linebacker. Very well. I think you did a nice job in the spring, but you could definitely see as he went into the summer, just, you know, bigger, stronger, being more comfortable closer to the line of scrimmage. It's different when you're closer to the line of scrimmage. I was doing a better job getting his hands on. On offense alignment and getting off of blocks using a better job, doing a better job with his hands. I understand the communication. The linebackers always have to be involved at the front. They can be involved and fit into the back end. He's doing that. I think he's, you know, looking forward to play, playing in a game and, you know, getting an idea of what it all looks like.
But I can tell you in practice, he's playing fast, he's playing violent. And I think he's, you know, he does a nice job of taking the meeting in the field, being very intentional about his work, but playing really hard. Yeah, I haven't talked to Jim because, you know, we'll make that final decision here over the weekend, but he's certainly leader in the clubhouse. Can you tell Ryan, I mean, Seth McLaughlin, can tell he's been there, done that. Is he projected that to the offensive line? You're still, and I'm saying for a leadership standpoint, a grown man. Yes. How does that just come up? How does it show up? A bunch of ways. It just poised. It's not getting rattled when, you know, coach parks at you. It's, you know, okay, I got this. Let me get it under control. It's seeing something in practice and being able to adjust on the move. It's being prepared when you walk on the field. It's recognizing how hard you have to play at the position. It's kind of all of those things in the one, but he's got great communication up front.
He talks to the guys. He's moving quickly in there. And when you have experience like he has, you know, the game seems to slow down at times yet. He seems to be playing it fast. Thanks for over. Hey, those are point where you got a black stripe off and I feel like you took a step in the right direction. When you come in in the summer, it is very difficult to get on the field, especially early in the season, whether he does or not, I will see. But if he continues to practice, boy, he's been practicing. And he'll give himself a chance to be in the rotation, maybe with you the season or later in the season, which is similar to some of the wider series that I've been back before. You've seen some of those guys get some metrics early in the season that they make an impact later in the season. I think that's probably more his path right now.
He shows up and starts doing great. And we'll give him the reps he deserves, like Jeremiah is in a different situation because he came in here during the war. And he was a little bit ahead. Anybody who comes in and generates to me, I don't look at them as a freshman anymore. They've been here. They're in the program. And we expect them to contribute. I'm still in there right there talking and communicating. But in the skirmishes we've had, it's been offense very deep. And so I've mostly been on the offensive side still kind of going through all those types of things. And there's a lot to work through this year just with the playcock and one of me that is close to my communication inside of 15 goes off.
There's a lot of things that go on there. We don't really get notification on that. So I'm trying to help chip with that and some communication that we're a person now. But I'm going to be very much involved with special teams. I think with the two minute warning, there's some strategic things that are going to go on again and again in the half in the game. I'd really be involved with. But to your point, just overall just looking guys in the eye and making sure that, you know, they have to right look in their eye. They understand, you know, with the situation, what's going on in the game. I think that happens sometimes with young players. They're just like playing the next play. That's not just how it works. We've got to win the situations. So all those things will come into play and make it in game adjustments. You know, be involved with all three faces, you know, watching the game and a tab with the try to identify what happened in the last series. I think all those things will be happening. Right now, Nick is going to be the starter.
And you know, that competition going for next week. But right now, as we head into the weekend, he is the starter. And the plan is ready to go first part of what we go on Saturday and exactly. He's got a strong leg. He's made it a good transition into the country, but also just playing football and not a string with football, which is very, very different. The snap to kick is really improved. You know, that was one thing as he's a taller guy. So the ball has to get out of this. You know, get out of this fish faster. I think he's done that his time time has been good and he's been more consistent. You'll see, you know, he'll kick a few. I'm just going to go right out of the stadium and we just got a strong, strong leg. So we're looking for that consistency. He's shown that here most recently. So he's got the upper hand right now. And last question, do you ever win? Well, I don't know if it's because Will maybe took a little bit longer to make the decision in December than some of the other top of the line quarterback to last week's date.
Or because maybe there was a thought he wasn't going to be the starter to take the short. But it seems like people have been kind of as a game manager, type of quarterback. After eight months with him, where do you see his ceiling? What, what, what is Will's special faith to you? Where do you see him taking stuff? I see a bunch of traits there. I think the first trait of size is big. He can stand in the pocket and see he's strong. So I mean, that's the first thing he noticed about him. Again, whether it's standing in the pocket with poise, I think that's another trait that he has that's excellent. He, he feels a rush, but he stands right in there. I think the next trait is just, you know, his top end speed. And he can run 22 miles an hour at that size, which there's not a lot of guys who can do that. So I think that's the short and narrow trait. And I would say his overall leadership commands in the huddle is is another, you know, something that he's, he's really, you know, grown into in the last few months and he's been here.
And then his accuracy, he's been very accurate since he's been here. And when he knows what's going on and he can explain what's happening, I mean, it looks right. He just feel and he can hurt you, you know, a bunch of different ways. So, yeah, he's sealing that that's that's going to be kind of, you know, up to how he plays the season, but I see a player who has a lot of great skills that, you know, translates well to the next level. So we'll see, but I know his first focus is on winning games around here. He plays, meaning up nurse naturally, the answer first come play that was good. I was rolling. Also, it was also, yeah, but like I prepared well and camp and practice all week. And I was, I was ready.
I have two multi year starters. I did a lot. I mean, I could ask them, hey, what we got here, but I was prepared well. I mean, I was telling Jimmy and said, it's like a way or blocks. I'll be emotional. It was just, it's a guy from Ohio. What does it mean? It started me. It was always my dream to come here and play and start and having that played me. I was like, keep going, keep building those days and those games and keep building. What a much younger Austin, don't you? No, not really. I don't think even I told my like, I asked my younger self, even committed here. I wouldn't believe that now. I have a couple of starts. Yeah. Awesome. Has this happened faster than you? I guess you're technically a sophomore. No, I knew that year two. I was going to see you some playing time now starting week one year two.
I didn't see that, but I was ready in spring ball. I knew I was going, I was going to play some soft. What does it mean to you to not only get the opportunity to play, but like you play well enough now, coaching staff trust you. I guess it shows like my preparation, my hard work and just everything I put into this and I just finally show it up on the field. There are moments of season in the end of the spring. I don't realize that you could play at this high level with the ones. Yeah, the definitely was in training camp. I mean, blocking highly can tie every day. Like it feels a lot of confidence and doing it well and not like getting balled or anything. There is defensive tag wasn't that easy. Hero and Jason Moore and Taiwan. All those guys. Pretty much anyone on the defensive line gets a bit tough.
That's how it's done. So, and Kay and Mack as well. I was more collected how about this ability and the way how much can he help you. He helped me a lot and I'm proud that he's our starting center not someone else's but I mean, he's like the captain of the line. He's another voice on the line with guys like Josh Fryer, Josh Simmons, Donnie and Tiger. That means another voice and another captain. Looked ways of having that and every this much experience helped. You're in the middle of the line. You can tell you like before the play was going on and like how to block someone like what you need to do. It helps a lot. Tiger is talking about how calm he is and how much does that benefit you? You have a guy who's kind of been there and seen a lot of us. Like us more calm like especially me and Dave let's first start. So like we were up here with what's said like he brought us down.
I mean we were like fine like our emotions weren't high. We were selling. Is that like something he tells you? Is that something you pick up on by how he's acting? How do you kind of mean sense what he's trying to say? It's by how he's acting and what I mean him when we're on the side of him. Both Josh Donnie like he was telling us like a cool like we got it. It's pretty much like everyone. Oh cool group. How much do you think as a first time starter? How much have you had in that? Me in a lot. That was my first time ever using high pads. We didn't use the high pads in high school but you can say like try to remember the defense. You can just come on a silent bring up a play and get help. Probably the first or second. After that. I thought we'd say all right in the middle. Awesome. Thank you very much. That's a live play. That's what you've been a part of me several years ago. I want to say maybe I don't know but I mean when I'm pretty sure you got the job I was really excited
because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo. I can run with the tempo you know I mean I'm playing basketball all life in the middle of football and I feel like just the fast pace often so we're running really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw a football at 65 yards but can you kick a football at 75 yards and wake up? No. Probably question. Lincoln, what was your question? How is your room after cleaning? He's a blessing man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. What's his name? His name's Lincoln. Teen hoes. Oh, he's cleaner. I think we're both really clean and that's why we kind of picked each other's roomies and we're very clean and we don't like our burdens really messy. Oh, it's true though. It's true. It's a real pretty clean stuff. Luke, are you still a cross-training attack or some or if you just been off guard this way? So far I've been all guard. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking the practice I practice. I can't end up being back attack like good and on but you know I'm just really focused in on this past practice is an excellent song.
Yeah. Oh, that mean a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here. You spend a dream just for being in Ohio kitties and from a Ohio kitties perspective. I mean, that's the biggest wish possible out of that I would say. That's going to be pretty cool. What was it like to slice your first game getting on the field for the first time? It didn't fly. This is going to be a weird answer but it feels like I was playing a game with that makes sense. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing. I just went in that first game and was like shoot out here now. It's on the road. You know, it didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't hit me after. I was like, what would you feel there? And if like get out there at the end of it, I just like honestly, I don't know. I felt less than there is the identity of school and it makes no sense. What is the value of the snow? What does it look like? What does it look like? A lot. I'm learning from Josh Ann Austin. I think, prior to my biggest role model series, my big brother, my first game ever.
I'm a PDN. I'm a PDN. I'm a PDN. OK. No. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, PDN Austin, those are my guys, man. I mean, even Miles too. All three of them. Those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well on. And I'm excited to see where they can get to. I'm excited to play on the field with them. Oh yeah, you know, it's been really helpful. You know, just keeping my mind just settled and straightforward on the next play. What do you think, Legos? Yeah. It's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to take consistent in my work. I think that's the biggest thing for me is just, I can't just worry about the next play. I guess there's something in connection with the big ones. You guys started turning out. The 10 plus rare, but did it beat off each other? Absolutely. I mean, when you see defense and start arguing with each other and things like that, I mean, that makes it a lot easier to have those 10-11 play jobs. What does that like? It's a nice location for me to start arguing.
Like you guys were dealing with that. I think that's the first thing. I'm good playing good on the role. But they've got to be the same in the last couple of years. I mean, it feels good to rip off these runs because I mean, we put them so much work on those. What are you going to do? You know, seeing a product of that hard work. You know, it's just a little bit of a shit. Tech Reserves since it gets off its line, why does it still prepare this week? We've got Donald from back in there. They tell her, oh, first time really? This season. It's not pretty good to us, it's just more of Donald and Jackson, pretty seasonal American, etc. I'm enjoying the group. You know, Donald and Jackson is a very good football player. Everyone who's on the field, he makes his presence stuff. I mean, we've all been training on my own. There's no tomorrow just going to move and he's on the ground. We know it can be. Yeah, there's a seat to be. There's a seat. Watching you guys last week. You're even more of a force. It felt like watching you guys. Maybe even if you feel like that. Yeah, I mean, we put in a work during practice.
We practice really hard. Coach, they really challenge us to practice hard. Positions. Coach, they really challenge us to practice hard. I was just a result of it. When it's grown up, what does it feel like being in the mix with that vehicle? It's us. It's. When you work hard for something and you're able to see like what comes out of it, like that's there's no better feeling in that. I grab. Can you do it with the car? I can do it. Can you adjust for it? It feels good that you're swaying. No, I mean, I was really funny to see. Thank you. Thank you. What is Seth Benwaff? What is Seth Benwaff? I brought some of you guys for the first two games. What's it been like playing next end for the last two? He's. You know, he's really calm and stormy. You never see real panic and having a guy like that mess you and you know, you're having
really played as many men as the snaps. I mean, there's no one outside of the other apps in my left and some in the right. I mean, for Seth, you know, those guys, they do so much for this offensive line of use. People talk about his intelligence really kind of showing up in the film room and on the field. Where have you noticed that intelligence and how has that helped you? Yeah, like I said, in crunch time, you know, when things are exactly looking like how we practice it, you know, having a guy like that, we'll do this, this, this. We execute it. Having a guy like that like this, there's none better than that. You know, what you got? I'm there from this one. What's my favorite cake? No.
I almost came back with a couple of suns of this and more. Take a look at it Marshall. They got a couple guys in the deep inside. They have big tin bodies. Absolutely. What do you see when you look at that tape and see just team seven, a couple of us guys are pretty big. Yeah, those guys there, they're real players. They're real players. They play good ball over there and you know, their defense plays hard. They challenge teams, you know, sometimes they might be overlooked and they still challenge them. They're not going to be able to do that. They're not going to be able to do that. They're not going to be able to do that. They challenge teams, you know, sometimes they might be overlooked and they still challenge teams. You know, so they come out there with the mentality like, no matter where he's in front of us,
or when he's in front of us. I mean, the adjuncts right there right in front of you right now, which is kind of a good thing and kind of a bad thing. And then you know, you should off the rest, you know, hitting back in the inside. You talking to your team? Yeah, I mean, I hear from Chris every once in a while trying to not to bother him so much, but it's always good to hear from guy like that guys like the one even Matt Jones returning back. All right, Tiger, thank you. And for this year, just be able to convince that you're on the level. I'm thinking of my weight, my height is more regard height. When I'm fast and my feet and I'm just thinking of you and I sometimes like basketball.
I want to be on that just like defense, but you don't have to stay in stage playing to stop and block. Exactly. Yeah, that's a great question. I mean I feel like these two can answer that for the year right now. I think KK here. I don't know what to say about that. What do you know? I'm going to say today, you know, this man is strong. I'm talking about that. I was giving him comments. He hasn't given up on the play. I said. Just going走 Step I'm not going to say that you're a guy. If you were to follow us around, we'll have to make sure that you sound like a coach, man. I don't know. I don't know. I'm just going to check Kelly's influence.
You're mine about maybe like the idea of tackle versus Darwin because obviously his offensive predilections were like, yeah, the offense blind play room game. Has he been a part of me settling into that? I don't know. I mean, when I'm pretty sure you got the job, I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo. I can run with the tempo. You know, I mean, I'm playing basketball all life in 7 football and I feel like just the fast paced offense that we're running really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw football at 65 guys, but can you kick the football 75 yards? I think it's. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. You're a roommate at the community. He's a blessing man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. What's the name? His name's Lincoln. Teen Hoes. Okay. Who's Peter? I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of pick each other as roommates because we're very clean and we don't like our burdens really
messy. Well, it's true though. It's true. The broke pretty clean stuff. Luke, are you still cross training at TACO or if you just been off the guard this break? Oh, so far I've been all guard. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking it practice by practice. I did end up being back at TACO. I could not, but you know, I'm just really focused in on this past practice is the next one. Yeah. Oh, that mean a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here. It's been a dream just for being in Ohio. Kidding from Ohio. Kid's perspective. It's, I mean, that's the biggest switch possible. I would say that's pretty cool. What was it like to last year at first game getting on the field for the first after that? It didn't, like, this is going to be a weird answer, but it feels like I was playing a game that that makes sense. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing. I just went in that first game was like, shoot out here. Now it's time to roll. You know, it didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't even
hit me after. I'm like, what would you feel there? Like getting out there at the end of it. I just like, honestly, I don't know. I felt less nervous. I felt like it made senseore that. Damn it, man. 크 True Leafs. The logo of the game is what is it in the state of the match? Maybe it touched? What do you think of what you think you've got in the ground. Isn't that extreme? Just being peggy? Yeah, so, you think that's amazing from our toolbar. see where they can get to. I'm excited to play on the field with them. Oh yeah, you know it's been really helpful. You know, just keep in my mind just settled and straightforward on the next play. That's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to take consistent in my work. I think that's the biggest thing for me is just
taking consistent and wearing my next play. To my game and I was I was like whoa I never had that happen. Like no other school like just Ohio State field can't wait. I was like wow that's crazy. I do but at the same time I don't just like to be a normal person. I don't really like to.
