And it shows, man. He's a skill for player, smart, instinctive. He's got all the athletic ability in the world. And I think he'll hear a big, great piece to the team. Harris, your opportunity on this thing is I think 13, right? And how do you view this opportunity one year contract? How are you looking at your situation? Yeah. To be honest with you, man, my career to this point has been a lot of ups and downs. I tend to harp on the downs more than the ups. But another opportunity is all I need. At the end of the day, that's all I want it. I'm just a guy that's going to try to make the most of the opportunity. Whenever it comes, whenever it shows, and you're not taking pride in that, obviously, you know, the number of opportunities, wherever you are, may be limited. But that's why I say you got to make the most of them. And each and every day, man, I'm just trying to get better, better at my craft, better teammate, better person, all the intangible things.
Like I said, when I'm going to make the most of it. Along those downs instead of the ups, is that a conscious decision? Or is that something that just kind of happens? I think a little bit of both. I think just the guy that I am, my competitive nature. Obviously, I love it to compete with others in this game, in this sport. But I compete with myself a lot. And obviously, some of my downs have been things I hadn't been able to control. Obviously, talking about injuries and things of that nature. But some of the other things, on a day-to-day basis, I think, just being the competitive guy that I am, is just something that's inside of me. I always want to be better than I was the previous day. There's a talk about the look at the speed in the room with you. And also John Ross. I mean, what did he notice about that, especially, you know, if you went to John Ross. Yeah. I mean, you can look out there on the field, man, and find around, trying to make plays. And, you know, for me, and I'm sure John, as well, every time you're on the field,
you just want to put that speed on tape. No matter if you're number one reading the play, or the last reading play, you're always just going to put that speed on tape. And obviously, the quarterback's to see that, the coaches to see that, and hopefully, my opportunities come from that, which is always going on. There's a talk around the NFL that they might want to ship the workouts to Lee Jr. to live, thinking about like injuries and prevention towards that. And some have talked about how offseason's coach for players, what that was like. What are your thoughts on that? What do you consider? Yeah. To be honest, I haven't really quit much thought into it. I feel like now, like I'm a year six and a week, I kind of got to, not kind of, but I have a pretty good routine. You know, how I schedule my offseason in terms of dates and, you know, report dates and all that stuff like that. I'm not going to be mad because that kind of just gives us more time. Obviously, with our families, and kind of doing the same things, just working out, like the first two weeks of OTA is kind of just working out and training and stuff like that.
Which, I mean, we're kind of doing already, you know what I mean? But then I see the side of it coming in when we do because we got a lot of new faces, guys that you sign up for agency, and then obviously the draft. So I mean, it's not a bad thing that we come in when we do because guys get to kind of be around each other and know each other and create that bond early on. Any second memory history for yourself, do you think that schedule should help in terms of injury recovery and streamlining that to the ceiling? I mean, yes and no. Speaking personally, I feel like a lot of my energies have been things out of my control. I feel like I've had a lot of free injuries. And, you know, can prevent, I don't know. But I mean, more time off, more recovery. I mean, if you're doing it the right way, then it's definitely beneficial. Except around back in the 19, the Eagles were very interested in you. What do you remember from that period, that process? Yeah, it's actually funny because I took a top 30 visit here. And I remember my visit, vividly, coming in, like just really loving the place, loving the staff, loving the people, especially like just having conversations with how we just
kind of just being in the building. Like it felt right to me. And I remember going home after my top 30 visit, talking to my girlfriend, wife at now, but in my mom, I really liked the Eagles. And that was kind of one of my teams going into the draft that I might be here. And I know that there's been talks that it almost happened or whatever. But, I mean, in hindsight, things always work out how they're supposed to be. Now I'm here. So I don't know if that meant to be like that, obviously it was, but now I'm here soon. You want me to be installed here. Do you feel that levels of playing field for you with your competition at all? So I think obviously with Kelley being here, at the end of the day for me, like football is football. And obviously, like I said, like being with a familiar face and Nick. So working with him and kind of like knowing what he's done in the past. And then obviously Kelley being a different dynamic. The good thing is like a lot of that stuff is similar to just different terms and different names. So for me, it's been very easy to kind of just be in here and get an offensive understanding.
So yeah, I think that's a credit. So another reason why I came here is just knowing Nick has some type of hand in the offense with Kelley. So it definitely helps me. Did that get a fraction of the jail hurts so far? Keep saying it again. In presence of jail hurts so far. Yeah. So I remember when I first agreed to terms to come here. The first person I got a text with was from Jalen. And he was basically just saying like excited to have you here. He said he kind of watched me from afar just knowing that I was a speedy guy, a good player, whatever. But just know that that meant a lot to me for him to reach out during that time. And since I've been here, man, he's been knows down like this works hard. He's a great leader. Just kind of his presence is aura. It just speaks volumes of the player he is, the leader he is, the person he is, he is man. And he's grinding to get better each and every day. When you're in the building, when a guy like that, you just want to play for them and want to get better with them. I'm saying for my take some more. Do you notice that the way that they do things here is different than the other places
you have said? Yes. I would say they are very, very, very detailed. Like Fernando and his team, they're like super, super detailed. Like even today, like we got these little things where we kind of rate our soreness from the prior practice and things like that. And talking with the staff and the nutritionists, just about plans and all that stuff. They're very, very detailed. And I've been in places where it's been like that. But I think this is kind of a step up just how they're so intense with those things. And I think it's definitely been a fish trip to the players. And that's in a couple of times as far as why you came here, even Kevin and Jason, but having a change of botan in that room as a fellow receiver, how does that sort of get a lot of 101? Yeah. To be honest with you, like looking at the room, looking at the situation, it's like I'm blessed to be with two of the best receivers in the game. And from the outside looking in, like the question is, oh, why would you go there? They already got these guys. And I'm like, man, I want to be around greatness.
I want to be in there and be with these guys and work with these guys and learn from these guys. Obviously me and AJ came in together, Devonce came in a year after. And so I've known AJ prior because we trained together for the combine and all that stuff. And I like to be in a room with those guys, like it's only room for opportunity to learn more. Like these are two of the best. And if you're in a room with that, like getting all the knowledge you can, like playing competing with those guys, like it's only going to make you better. So like I'm blessed to be in this opportunity, blessed to be in that room. For sure. Thanks guys. You guys are welcome. Thank you. Thank you. Right now, he hasn't done any interceptions. So hopefully Russian coverage can work together so we can cause his first turn over the season. I know the guy, he's been a guy in the past that those lots of interceptions because he takes shots. And I know he's even at the ball as far as he can in front of our crowds. So you got to do a good job of plastering them. Statistically, the run against was a lot better in the second half Sunday than the first half. Does anything really change there at all? Our aggression.
Just to piggyback off that, we got to continue to be better. Personally for me, I don't like seeing the amount of yards on the board granted. We did win. But I don't want to be the hindsight guy and forget about the run game. Still, I think an issue for us. It's an issue for me. We got to be better. I don't want to be one of the last teams in the league in a run game. So we're doing a good job. Are my assets right? The coaches are emphasizing it and eventually he's going to get going. Obviously, number one, have a teammate be treated away like Jerome. But with Ernest Jones coming in, he's highly touted. There's a pretty good run defense kind of linebacker. Does that do for your defensive room? Terrier in my book, I. But it does it. It does. I can't really speak on it because I don't really know Jones that well. I don't know his game. I've heard from others that I know that plays for the Rams. I said he was good. But as far as that, I don't know. Hopefully this move works out for the betterment. Obviously, we all want that too. But we'll see how it goes.
I feel like a positive thing obviously when John Schneider and your coach are working to get an impact player and your team when the NFC is kind of this wide open. It can be viewed as a positive or negative thing. It depends on what window you look through. What's that process like for you in terms of having to learn guys and their tenet season communicate with the new players that are coming in during the middle of the season? It's a big process. It's definitely not easy to rework your roster in the middle of the season. They're going to do what they're going to do regardless. And obviously, I respect that. I'm forward. I believe in their system and what they want to do. But it's an adjustment for all of us to learn a new guy and kind of reestablish a new relationship and reestablish a new voice that you're going to hear and make a call in the middle of the field, especially because he's the quarterback of the defense. So it's just something you've got to get adjusted to, all of us. Playing in a different weight this season, has that been any sort of an adjustment for you? It has been. Just getting comfortable with my body again and figuring out my strengths and weaknesses and how to make sure all my weaknesses are just completely strange.
So it's been a challenge in that aspect too. And I think I'm doing a good job out there so far. But in this past rush is going well. How much of it is guys playing off each other? I'm thinking a boy his sack force from was, you know, two U collapse of pocket and then he's able to get them. Yeah, you're all in a, yeah. I would say last game was probably the best game. Surprisingly, it was all working together as good as we did. I think these past couple games prior before that game, it's been a lot of us just, we just went in and just happened to be like that. I feel like this Atlantic game was a good game of us communicating. The past game schemes, whether it's a game or just going to straight, straight rush and just reading off each other. And we had to get better at that. It's only been a couple games. Well, it's only been seven games. We have a lot more football to play to get better and build our relationship on that aspect. If you dropped in coverage as much as you thought you might have or. Um, but on par. I've dropped a good amount of time so far this year. I'm talking about doing it now. So she put me on whoever not put me on George Kittle.
No. Have you seen Derek Hall grow in the last, from my season this year, being around him? I mean, he's the same type of player. Honestly, only thing that's been different is mindset and it's applying to the field. And he has to continue. You and the organ, how's that game? I was. Yeah. Jackson had a duck jersey on the week after. Did you have something that you had to do? I had to do something that was a little more. I don't know why we didn't run the ball in the last extension of the game. So talk to them boys down the Columbus and tell them to run the damn ball next time and just get trusted kicker. But it's not good. Did you get the penalty, the intentional penalty late in the game? I don't know if that was on purpose. We I think Mike brought that up to me and asked me. Do you think it's on purpose or they did by accident? I don't know. But it was intentional. It was intentional. It was a very serious move. I didn't I want to expect that. So that was actually you know, big brain played by him. Did you think there should have been a second left?
No, I'm be real. I don't want to be biased. No, we ran out of time. We just my boy, my boy 18 was back there just too comfortable. But it's all good. He's going to learn. First game with Roy Robertson Harris. What were your impressions of him? I was like 68 and it's crazy. He's super, super strong. I've been watching him. I've been seeing this game from afar from a while. I shouldn't have been watching it above. And seeing I saw him in Chicago. I saw him in Jacksonville. You know, he just watched a lot of football and a lot of tapes. So eventually you just see guys. You pay attention to who they are. So you know, it's been a unique process of just bringing them in. And he's picked up a defense pretty well. Very powerful guy. Versus was well. And I think it's going to add a lot of a lot of good plays to our defense here. So you can do for the defensive lineman have arms that long. Shoot. Can nobody touch your chest? You in the ball game. You don't want big strong lineman grabbing you and trying to rough out you because they're already bigger than us in the first place, especially me. They like 68, 330.
And I'm wherever my weight is. So playing with extensions is very key for a D-Lime. It's a desire that can be addicted for people. I think I fell into that, no younger age, but super worth it. That's not cool. I am. And so do you get it? I watched the last episode of Landman on the plan. I downloaded it. It's a great show. What do you think of it? A little hard, but I don't know that. His wife seems a little bipolar. I don't know how he handles it. It's a good show, bro. It seems to be coming on the film up. It's been a while right? So I'm excited to see how it goes. What did you like about Jared? Oh, I thought he'd been a good child. I was surprised. Honestly, he seemed like he knew what he was doing. He was cool. So do you put it in question?
You say you hit your mom in salary. You get to win it all. Does mommy get a pay raise or? I don't know. We'll have to talk about that. Just sure. You'll have a meeting or something. You can see it. We'll figure it out. Everybody seems to have a good band trust. People are going to be on the beach. Peace. I don't know if you know. I don't know if you know. I don't know if you know. I don't know if you know. I don't know if you know. I don't know if you know. I'm just going to help you. As other people, I just want to spend five minutes on that trip. Yeah, well, I mean, first off, I think I'd be doing this service to my teammates. You know, me even think about what's next. What's right in front of us is an over-year. And that's another thing I got as help me. So much. Drew is just being present in every single room that I'm in. You know, not looking too far ahead because I'm tripping on what's right in front of me. So, again, I just, that's the true self-inspirational of the thing. It's a media to be thinking about what's next to me. Are you at least aware that there's a lot of speculation out there that people are going to throw a huge number
and a few are going to board all the season? I mean, right now I'm just not worried about all that stuff. I mean, people can say all they want to say, but, you know, I'm just focused on, focus on Friday. Nervous? I mean, I still get nervous for sure, but I just don't think. I think I do a good job just understanding that, that moment, whatever moment it is that I'm nervous about, it doesn't define who I am as a person, and it doesn't define who I am and God's eyes. And understanding and knowing that has just kind of put like this forceful of peace around me that, I think, it allows me to be able to be calm in certain situations, but it doesn't, that's not good. It's not good. What makes you nervous? I mean, I just love the game so much, and if you don't get nervous or a little bit of butterflies,
I don't think you have that same love. I mean, I've got butterflies since, you know, going into football games since I was, you know, five, six years old. So I don't want that feeling. I just don't know. I just, you know, football just doesn't mean as much as it did to me back then. I want it to always mean that much. I've been told, but I think so. Who's in the most field of high-stakes in the world? It's going to be high-stakes. What? I'm really playing as much, so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt. So I can bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot. One of those younger guys, we're seeing it out here. It's the first time in the sport all these last years. What have you seen from Will? I've kind of felt like last year, we all forgot about him because he was hurt. Now he's running, you know, almost a second man out of the hang you and Ty. What have you seen from that experience? Will is a workhorse. He's going to stay quiet, he's going to work hard, and that's all I love about him.
He focuses, he don't really talk much. He's going to get the job done, do a job right. He rarely has any mistakes. What would be a successful season? A national championship. I ring when all the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't beat and we just got to go show it. That mindset different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year, this year even more so. You guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like that, that's enough. Does that just keep feeling different? Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder, we noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this, so we got to go bigger, go home and we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan, but when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute, right? You know what I mean? You were right there, something goes a little different.
You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that, hey, you guys want to win a national championship, but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year, like you're that close? So I'm saying, we just like work harder. That's kind of a coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares, just work harder. Like those, you know, we'll play Georgia, it's the same thing. Last, last play, you know, they went on the win in 90s, so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, as you know, it's frustrating, but you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year, and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you can learn. I thought I was working harder than you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing? Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how growing up is basically in college. I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could, but not look back at it.
I really wasn't working hard at all, compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. If the stamina is a 16, then the answer to, like, what do you need it to be to be your best? It is a 75. 80, 85? I mean, I can, it's all on me. I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder. Get the shape. It's like the stamina that you have to have, it's been a thing. The idea of a potential to be 16 or 17 or 17, is how do you... I'm sad about that idea. There's a making nervous about, can you last that long? Where are you? Where are you? Where's your right eye? I think I killed that eye. I think I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with it. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody, like, online, D-line. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know. Get that pieces on the D-line and the O-line and everywhere else. So we can last that long.
Speaking of that, the last game we've done, then we'll snap it. If you like playing that new snap again, last year because I don't know. I don't know if any of us were really expected to be playing that next time. Yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought, like, there are no moments you know I can go sit down or something. But we're playing in big games, like, you know, Notre Dame, too, or North, those kind of games. Of course I want to be in, because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I need to jump in. What stands out about Kaden McDonald is he got it. You guys, it was a second. Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac animal. Y'all, you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's grown right now. He has to work, I think. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 630, you're 327, he's 326. Yeah, he's a real good guy. I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's got to develop more in getting the playbook. It's really a lot on you, older guys. There's that large group of young guys, and then there's the seniors in your back.
Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right during the off season. So they can play. And not just play, they want to contribute, like, make plays, tackle, and sex. It's a state that I work this freshman. It seems like these guys get bigs. Each one of the freshmen class is a bigger, bigger, bigger. Do those guys kind of, does those kind of value themselves the first? Yeah, they definitely use some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of some of the day too when I'm passing on. Throughout the workouts, they've been working hard. They're determined. I can say that. It looks like they're ready to work with me. How important this dude feels like. There's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defensive tactics who can eat up space, but also move, you know, right? Did his back beat? Does that have an inquire that maybe through great defense? Do have guys like you that have some balls, but also have great feet?
I think that is definitely. I think if you look at the last couple of national champions and winners, like Team up North, they got two good detacles, two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacles. I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, they're almost defined by the defense attack. What's Georgia? Jordan Davis and Daniel Carter. Let's miss again. It's Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions. You might as well know how. I mean, you understand it because you play it. But I feel like some time I don't know. Are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop more and more of these like freakish detacles. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four, seven, eights and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about the freakish athletic defense attack, how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely.
I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch it do the drills. I have a tape here. You're like, look at my film. So I think I'm up there with all these guys. Tyler, can you become like an artist who comes to the bad guy's dumb classes? The figure wags have your things. When you're going to spring practice, you're not doing as much a weapon on the left. That's the problem. How do you work on that? Do you have like a goal one, Martin? I don't remember how many Ad绍 you're going. I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that, but I think they've encountered. I think they've encountered some of them and some of them were like just missed it. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's goes big and what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter of the against anyway you can is just great for the defense. You know, just that little thing covering his eye, you know, he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player. So, it's something that you really, really have to work on.
You do that with what you've been doing. It's really, that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You've done your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that pastor takes a good look at it and we don't have to ask for this. We're kind of, kind of, kind of expected for the people. I think I just have like an eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like load up. I just try to get in his way and sometimes he just throws it to me. I don't know. How are your experiences if you want to be a high state quarterback? I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just good. I've got you a lot of different backs, man, they just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs and you got to go right now. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Auto, he was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. Who's the best back in this draft?
Best back in this draft. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all decision. Playing well with Howard. What I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard, man. He's just such a great leader. It's just like in moments where usually a lot of players they fold, man, he was just always calm and relaxed, man. He, just the leader that he was, man, that's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's, he's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. So James people's, man, he's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so, man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so, man, yeah, definitely Ohio State. You know, that running back room is in great hands. I was right there looking at the UFC spot. I'm just helping me raise my personality and I'm just helping them.
I'm helping them. Yeah. Coach, Coach Hartline, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well. You know, I'm just learning from him as well. You know, I'm trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartline. And so, he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so, I think they'll do really good. So, what's your answer to this guy? Just intensity, man. And since he got the playoffs, every game, man, is like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and intensity keeps getting higher and higher. So, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day and come in and work. Just like Ohio State, you know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL.
And so, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think where I trained, I trained at Yo-Murth Performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man. They did a really good job. The bucking nearest, no, I haven't. Tampa, Tampa, nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40, the broad and the vert. It's a great season, awesome locker. Do you speak to your mentality of like when you've got online hackers, or the staff, or the bigger than you, and you're in red, just wear a locker. Yeah. Yeah. No, man.
It's really all about technique. And then it's about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receiver, so I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit, you know. And so, I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that, but I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man, making sure the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you've been working on right now? In my game, you can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe it's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so, that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better at it. I feel like I did a good job of that in my senior year.
And so, I just want to continue to build on that. So, you know what I'm saying? Yes, I did. Yes, I did. I didn't mean to look like I'm going to be in the middle of the game. I did mean to be in New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. I know I have a Camera shoe. Yeah, man, I have a Camera great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. So, I mentioned playroom on the table. You know, the transition is going to be a little bit more. Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield. You know, a man and man coverage. You're getting on that linebacker. And so. Yeah, I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man.
And the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard. You know, even shoot him. I don't know. Every good. I think he had a every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely man. He's going to be a special player, man. He really is. Man, a lot of ups and downs, man. It's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just not have something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't. It's not too much. They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments, where it's tough, you know, where it's slow.
And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort. You know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so. How are you feeling about the power of Jesus? Man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. I just really love their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham mentality, man. That boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know. You see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And then as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, still forming somebody, and shoot, it's a game to 10.
And so. You some of the things that he does, he just realizes two different things actually. Shoot, I think. Yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, too, beyond it. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong. And so, you know, he's able to do, he's able to do those things. Yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quincham. You know, I want to look at his game and it's like, man, where, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. Julian Sand. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate. And so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, continuing to grow as a leader, continuing to grow as a player. And so he's going to be really good for high state. I know just the quarterback position. I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've definitely been vocal. And so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask Julian Sand as well.
It's to be that vocal leader and lead the offense and lead the team. Shoot, man, he has a build like JK Dobbins. And I kind of see them, you know, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his none. A lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is great. I remember before I recruit, before I committee here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same. And so, appreciate you all. Yeah, I'll be going.
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I got coming in last shot, I knew the role. So I just tacked Eric Dave really the same way. Thank you, James. Thank you very much, Eric. Physically, how different are you? Weight wise, body wise on that from the year ago. I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240. I'm like 244 right now.
Last shot, I played it like 236, 237. What does it feel like at 244 or a belt? You feel like almost a different machine out there. Yeah. What does it feel like to be running around out there like you are with more, more back? I just feel like I'm like, like, like more downhill, like stronger. Like I'm taking all the blood to better. It's bigger. No. Is it daunting? Maybe that's not the correct term. But to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year. And you played quite a bit last year instead of what you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more. Is it going to get ready to just play 30 more snaps? So. But are you, are you, how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-stand point? Yeah. Yeah. I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My, I'm ready for it. I'm ready to match in the service space. But it's not really two different teams. Compared to the ones that I'm going to play and stuff. How does that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for it, were an opener
of that magnitude? Yeah, what an opening like that. We've been, we've been emphasizing in the line. We know we got coming. So we know we got to do, we did the cool prayer for it. How are you. He just brought me with to it. Here has to play right. Um, I think Rowlie ready to play right now. He, he, his friends, like he ended up, he ended up in the book. He stood in like he had been. was crazy like he saw like the saw like to. Or like you said you're ready. You know you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready for whatever the team needed for you? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was which is whenever I was needed I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. What difference is that feeling this year is the analyzed figure? That's the most possible thing to have. Oh, asked that one more time.
How different is that responsibility? That should be that you should be emotionally called out. But if you were to ask if you knew you were a role player? I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year I was intentional with everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Is somebody you... Some reason I was in the first place. And what word? How's everybody's word you want? I say... Scrabbing. Now I say, when you think of me, you would think of like a bully, like a silver bully. I don't really bully. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play a thing. No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but... I'm saying that the nickname... Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I'm going to come to court question for Patricia's style and how it's free.
I mean, how does that fit you? And what are you enjoying about bullying in that kind of style? Um, I think it fit me because... I don't know, I just like the defense. I feel like we got... Like you said, we got a lot of freedom and we moving around a lot... A lot of the terms is like, you know, I don't know. I don't really know how to answer that. That's okay, does it? You can go on your instincts a little bit more, maybe? And it's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like... I just like it's deep, I like her Patricia's deep because I like what you got going on. What was it sad when CJ left the room? Uh, now I wanted to mention that, I was kind of like happy fun. No, that's what you want. No, no. No, that's my dog, I'm going to say it. Kind of missing a little bit, but yeah, I'm happy fun, though. Well, don't thank you. Go ahead, one last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for...
That wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own. How much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and along the summer year, your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like... Yeah, I do feel like I did win the national championship, but like you said, my role wasn't the same as how it's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to go get another one experienced that, like feeling maybe on the field, a lot more place. Great, well, thank you very much. Thanks for having been using you, you know, and that almost saved you whole stuff. How much is it grown? Did you can put your finger on? Yeah, I was growing immensely. I mean, Caleb, he makes a lot of checks. Latham makes a lot of checks. I listen to them. Whatever they need, if I need to cover somebody, I'll go cover anybody. If they need me to do run support, I'll do run support. And it's really what Caleb does, what we do, and Latham. It just goes back to Coach G's preparation, and everyone's preparation to give us more flexibility, and it doesn't matter who's in those positions,
and we can all play every position, whether it's covering somebody or running and tackling. Did you feel like that was the case before the Oregon game? You're saying what I'm saying? I mean, is it something that's been added? It just, you know, rely on a little bit more, go ahead. Yeah, it did. I was probably playing Nebraska game, Megan and more safety reps, and we had a five week to prepare, so I really learned to play, but a lot more, even though I knew the play, but I learned a lot more, like in debt, you know, so really just after the Oregon game, it helped me a lot to go back to safety, go to NICU everywhere. Thanks, Ben. You Dan, both left and right. You guys had a lot of issues of giving up big plays in the passing game of the first game against Oregon. What do you feel if you guys need to do better this time around, just to make sure that doesn't happen? Just the same mindset. We got to challenge these receivers. You know, every dog has their day. Maybe some people didn't have their day that game, but we'll look out there and hopefully change the narrative,
and we still play with the same confidence, same technique, and, yeah. Bill Rebellion, what's the problem with this patch? And Denzel obviously had a tough game, and that one. What have you seen from him and how he's responded? Do you get a sense of from him, how he's helped you for this rematch? Yeah, he's super stoked for this rematch. His preparation has been very good. He's always been preparing, even though it didn't go the way he wanted to go. That game, but he just always had his confidence. And we're going to see a big game out of him this week. And, you know, I know you guys wanted to play them in anapolis. But the fact that you get to play them at the Rose Bowl, I mean, get a second chance. And people have said, you don't get that very often. How determined are you guys to take advantage of it? We're super, super determined. We watched film. I mean, we've lost a lot of film. The first time we played them, now we've got another six games that they played. Of film to watch. And it's just, they've grown a lot as a team. Same as us.
We've grown a lot. We're not the same team. We were when we played them week one or weeks six or whatever. But now we're out there and going to play fast, physical, and everything like that. All right, Jordan, we're going to jump to the Zoom question here from Joey Kaufman. Club is this back. My bad, not too Joey. Cameron T. Robinson, the athletic. Hey, Jordan, you've moved around a lot in the second day in your career. And now kind of getting some many more safety reps. What is it like at this point when Walt or Coach Mills comes to you and asks you to do some else? And just how much can you lean on the experiences you've had moving around when you're trying to learn something new in the middle of the season? It means a lot. We always talk about this is if it's being on the surface. Whether that's making plays or not making plays. Or doing your job so another person can make plays. That's kind of what we pride ourselves on. And it's just fun. Me moving around different positions. I'm always up for a new challenge. And a lot of people in the country can't do that.
I just hold myself to that standard where I can play any position and excel at it. Okay. If anybody else needs a question, let me know. But otherwise we're going to go to Austin more of the podcast. Jordan, when you were talking about watching film, Oregon. Which one do you think is more valuable to you watching that against yourself? Seven games ago, even if you've changed or the ensuing six games for Oregon? Which one do you put more stock in? Kind of both. For me, I kind of watch what I did. Things I did well. Things I didn't do too well against them. And their team is changing that life. Their scheme has changed. Some players have been out those those stretch of games. So I really watched the past game we played. And I know they're going to go back to some of the stuff that they liked, of course. And different games like Penn State, maybe Illinois, they run a lot of men. So just watching, watching stuff like that. Every game matters. So yeah.
Jordan, thank you very much. Thank you. I'm really playing as much. So I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt. So I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been doing a lot of good. One of those younger guys we're seeing right here. It's the first time I've heard all your lectures. What have you seen from Will? Because I kind of felt like last year we all forgot about him because he was hurt. Now he's running, you know, almost a second man out behind you and Ty. What have you seen in the memories? Will is a workhorse. He goes, stay quiet. He goes work hard. And that's what I love about him. He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's going to get a job done. Do a job right. He rarely has any mistakes. So what would be a successful season? A national championship. A ring. When all the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't beat. And we just got to go show it. That mindset different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year. This year even more so. You guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like that. That's a lot of things.
Does that just keep feeling different? Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same word. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go bigger, go home, and we're not trying to go home. So it's finished big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute. Right? You know what I mean? You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have been one that came against them. Does that tell you anything about like that? Hey, you guys want to win a national championship. But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year. Like you're that close. So I'm saying we just like work harder. That's kind of coach makes a saying. You know, nobody cares. Just work harder. Like those, you know, when we played Georgia, it's the same thing. Last, last play. You know, they went on the win in 90. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles.
Of course it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year. And hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought I was working hard. Did you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing? Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could. But now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all. Compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. If the stamina is a 16, then the answer to what do you need it to be to be your best? It's a 75. 80, 85. I mean, it's all on me. I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny. But I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder. Get in shape. It's been a thing. The idea of a potential to 16 or 17 or 17. I said about that idea.
Does it make you nervous about, can you last that long? You really need to worry. You still need to worry about that. I think I can tell that out there. I think I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with it. We can't play 50 snaps a game. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody, like online, D-line. We got to get those younger guys to play. Get that pieces on the D-line and O-line. And everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of that, Blightfield and the Snaps. Did you like playing that new Snaps a game last year? I don't know if any of us were really expected to be playing that next time. Yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought like, there are no small mucinat and go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame, too, or North, those kind of games. Of course, I want to be, because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Keaton McDonald is he got it. You guys are the second. Oh, yeah, definitely. He came back as an animal. You haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time.
He's just, he's growing right now. He has a work ethic. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 630, you're 327, he's 326. Yeah, he's a kind of look at him like my junior, but you know, he may be a great player. He's got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you older guys. There's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys? Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right during the all season. So they can play and not just play. They want to like contribute like make plays tackles sex. It seems like these guys get bigger each one of the first in the class. It's a little bigger. Do those guys kind of, does it kind of why you want to solve the first? Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes.
And they all work hard. I've only seen much of some day too when I'm not on the ads on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined. I can say that. It looks like they're ready to work with you. How important this notes feels like. There's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defense attacks who can eat up space. But also move, you know, right? That is that is that environment maybe for great defense to have guys like you that have some fault. But also a great feat. I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last couple of national champions and winners. Like team up north, they got two good detaco, two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacles. I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this, they were going to fight by the defense attack. It was like, what's Georgia, Jordan Davis and DL Carter and what's Michigan? It's Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions for you.
You might as well tell me how. I mean, you understand it because you play it. But I feel like some time I don't know. Are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Like in the combine, just now you see in like those guys, they're moving four to four seven eights and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about this freakish attack, how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles. But I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch the come on. I watch the dude who's the dude who drove. I have a tape here. Like, you're looking like my film. So I think I'm going to. I think you become like a artist and a bad guy passes the figure away. It's kind of your thing. When you're going to spring practice, you're not doing a bunch of left and right. How do you work on that? Do you have like a gold one?
I don't remember how many ad lines you're like, you have gold lines. How many do you want to have? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that. But I think they're counseling. I think they're counseling some of them. And it's some of them where I like just missed it. So, but I think we work on drones matching the hand. I think that's goes big. And what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter of that is. Any way you can is just great for the defense. You know, just that little thing you cover in his eye, you know, he might throw it. A little bit to the left to our player. So, so it's something that you really, really have to work on. It's really, that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most. You can turn your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that passed me about. We don't have to ask for this. We kind of kind of expected. I think I just have like a like a eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just I see him like load up. I just try to get in his way and sometimes he throws it to me. I'm here to do it to the high state quarterbacks. I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better.
Yeah, a lot of a lot of different backsman is just learning to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs. You got to go right now. One, two, three. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you. I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey auto. He was injured this year. I like McCaffrey best back in this draft. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all decision. Playing with Howard. What I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard man. I just such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where usually a lot of players they fold. He was just always calm and relaxed. Man, he just the leader that he was, man, that's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's going to be really good, man.
He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. So James people's man, he's smart. The way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so man, yeah, definitely Ohio State. You know, that running back room is in great hands. I was right there looking at the UFC spot and I was helping me raise my personality. And I'm just going to keep that up until the same end. Yeah, Coach Hartline, man. He's full of energy, man. And he's creative as well. I'm just learning from him as well, you know, trying to run more outside the backfield. It was being able to learn from Coach Hartline. And so he's definitely creative at what he does. And he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think they'll do really good. Straight away, he's going to play off of Ohio State. That's what he was most interested in. Just the intensity, man. And since he got the playoffs, every game, man, is like the intensity got, you know, higher and higher.
So, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and the intensity keeps getting higher and higher. Yeah. Yeah. I know I took a couple days off after the National Championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at YoMurf Performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in. The way they went about training us, man, they did a really good job.
The Bucking Nears, no, I haven't. Temple, a Tampa nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. The 40 to broad and avert. Yeah. Yeah. No, man. It's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well. And so, I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother. It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. It's, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit, you know. And so, I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that, but I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brother's, though, man, making sure that the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside
and making sure they get fed. You had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you've been working on right now when you need to. In my game, you can't really work on this, you know, in all season. I feel like it's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run, you know, maybe. I was really just continuing to run through tackles. And so, that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better. I feel like I did a good job of that in my senior year. And so, I just want to continue to build on that. Yes, I did. Yes, I did. So, people, you look like now that you are out there, you get back in nursing. Have you met them before? I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera. Sure, yeah, man, I have a Camera. Great, great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie, he's smooth. Yeah.
Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the building. The option out of the backfield, man coverage, you're getting on that line backer. And so. Great, but you have to do what he needs to be here in a couple of years, Jeremiah. You have to turn it towards the world. It's not just how you press it. It's always a little bit of a bad pressure. It's always a little bit too much. Like I said, I say to the man, the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man. And the way that man approaches the game, he comes in with the mindset, he's going to work every single week. Every practice, he's working hard. Even shoot it. I don't know. I think he had a, every game was a good game for him, man. But still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely, man, he's going to be a special player, man. He really is. Man, a lot of ups and downs, man.
It's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm not having something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't, it's not too much, they can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. And so being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments where it's tough, you know, where it's slow. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you that peace and comfort. You know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't, you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so... The back of the firm, the entrance of power and judgment is through our effectiveness.
Which aspect, the future, those other individuals that you run to, from being around power and... Um, man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. I just really love their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham mentality, man. Um, that boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted. You know, you see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards. And then as soon as you know it, you know, he, the running through somebody, stiff arm, and somebody, and shoot, it's a game to 10. And so... You some of the things he does, he just realizes two different things actually. Yeah. Shoot, I think... Yeah, man, I think it just like, he's just gifted, man, to be honest. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong, and so, um, you know, he's able to do those things. So, um, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game, and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quincham.
You know, I want to look at his game, and it's like, man, where, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. What's your last experience in the game? Druel Insan. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. So, so accurate, and so, um, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right, just, you know, um, container grow as a leader, container grow as a player, and so he's going to be really good for a high state. Thanks for having us. Uh, he's, I know just the quarterback position, um, I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've, they've definitely been vocal. And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to, um, ask him Julian Insan as well, is to be that vocal leader, and lead, um, and lead to offense and lead to steam. I'm going to ask you an extra question. Shoot, man, he has, he has a bill like JK Dobbins, and, um, I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his, no, um, a lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is great.
I remember, um, before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every, um, one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And, um, I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see, um, James people, I see similarities to both of their games. I feel like they play the same. And so, appreciate you all. Yeah, I'll be going. This. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I got coming in last round, the role. So I just tacked Eric. They really the same way. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240, I'm like 244 right now. Last year, I played it like 236 to 37. What does it feel like a 244 or a bell? You feel like almost a different machine out there. Yeah. What does it feel like? More back. I just feel like I'm like like, like, like more downhill, like stronger. Like I'm taking all the bloods better. It's a big. Maybe that's not the correct term, but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year.
And you played quite a bit last year and stuff. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? You just got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps. Are you? How would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an eight. Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My I'm ready for it. The text is open. It's a rematch. But it's not really two different teams compared to the last time you all played and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming. So we know we got to do. We've prepared for it. Already just probably. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman like he in the here in the book. He studied in like he advanced and his measurements crazy. Like he saw a lot of silence. I said you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready?
Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Just whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. I think that's a thing. Ready. Is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling this year. I asked I one more time. How different is that response? I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year, but I kind of go about it the same way like last year. I was attention over everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. And what word? I say, describe my game. I say like when you think of me, you would think of like a like a bully like a silver bullet.
I don't really. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but I'm saying that. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's like. I was free. How does that fit you? And what are you doing about? I think it fit me because I just like the defense. I feel like we got, like you said, we got a lot of freedom and we're moving around a lot. A lot of the times is like, no, I don't know. I don't really not answer that. That's okay. Does it? You could go on your instincts a little bit more, maybe? That's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like I just like his defense. I like how the defense. I like what you got going on. Now I want to say that I was kind of like happy fun. Yeah. That's what you want. No. No. That's my dog.
I'm going to say yeah. Kind of missing a little bit. I'm happy fun. Go ahead. One last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own. Yeah. How much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your classmates? Yeah. I do feel like, um, yeah. I do feel like I did win a national. But like you said, my role wasn't same as how's going to be this year. So yeah, I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling maybe on the field, a lot more place. Great. Oh, Bill. Thank you very much. I feed and I just see me. I'm still sometimes like basketball. I want to be on that just like the fed, but you know, I got to stay stitch going some blocks. Exactly. Yeah. That's a great question. I mean, I feel like these two can answer that for the beer right now.
I think KJ and hero can answer that. I don't know what to say about that. What do you guys think? I go against every day. This man is strong. Well, I'm talking about like you get the basketball feel like you can just do a thing. I mean, he was really fast. Just over a shirt. He got the great. He doesn't give up on the play. And like you said, he's going to go in and watch the film. He's not like a coach, man. He's not like a coach. Chip Kelly's in for exchange. Your mind about maybe like the idea of tack over his job because obviously his offensive was for like offensive line play. That's part of you settling in the guard. I want to say maybe I don't know, but I mean, when I'm pretty sure you got the job, I was really excited because I'm one of those guys is the tempo.
I can run with the tempo. You know what I mean? I'm playing basketball all life in set of football and I feel like just the fast pace often. So we're running really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw a football like 65 guys, but can you kick a football 75 years ago? Probably question Lincoln. What was your question? How is your your room amp? He's a blessing man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. His name's linking keen hoes. Oh, he's a cleaner. I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of picked each other's roomies because we're very clean. We don't like our rooms really messy. Well, it's true though. It's the truth. They're both pretty clean. Luke, are you still a cross-training at Tagel some or have you just been all guard this break? Oh, so far I've been all guard. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking it practice by practice. I could end up being a back attack or I could not, but you know, I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next one.
Oh, that mean a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here. It's been a dream just for being in Ohio kid. I'm from a Ohio kid's perspective. I mean, that's the biggest wish possible. I would say that's going to be pretty cool. What was it like last year at first game getting on the field for the first time? It didn't feel like it was going to be a weird answer, but it felt like I was playing a game if that makes sense. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing. I just went in that first game. I was like, shoot out of here now. It's time to roll. You know, it didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't even hit me after. I was like, what would you feel there? And if like getting out there in the end, I just like, honestly, I don't know. I felt less nervous. I didn't high school and it makes no sense. A lot. I mean, I'm learning from Josh Ann Austin. I think prior to where my biggest role model series, my bigger brother, my first game. I'm up to deal. I don't know if it's to deal. Okay. No, yeah. Yeah. So, yeah, I'm asking those are my guys, man. I mean, even miles to all three of them. That's those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well.
And I'm excited to see where they where they can get to. I'm excited to plan the field with them. Oh, yeah, you know, it's been really helpful. You know, just keeping my mind just settled and straightforward on the next play. It's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to take consistent in my work. I think that's the biggest thing for me is just ain't consistent and worry about the next play. So you got it from the guy you were playing. Yeah. Wow, that's weird. Yeah, I mean, I guess they didn't want to get my nerves up, but like I was ready. I mean, I did I took most of the ones that solve camping. I mean, I was already I was pretty much that I wasn't really nervous to start the game. Yeah. Which is a nice piece. Yeah. He said you got it. You mean you're going against Thai League and Kyle every day and practice. I mean, it's not different. Almost different. Are you now, though, to attend to the two starts? As a player, you know, having having that under your belt.
I mean, I'm more confident. I know what's going on. I can see like I can see what's going on with the defense. I know what's going on. I know what's coming. I mean, I understand the game's a lot better than what it was. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Playing with that does for a line. I mean, if we get out early, it's get the defense change in place. They're changing their defense. They start fast. I mean, they're trying to get the calling play, but you start faster. I'm not going back. I trust a lot of sessions. Yeah. Of course, they pretty much said those. You deserve to play. You know, some warm up. What would you expect this week? In terms of your role? Where they need me. If it's left right. Wherever I need to go in, I go in and go back to do the front of me. I'm just like playing tackle. I'm. Took me back to high school days, but I should back in high school was really random all up really into and passes, but it was fun. Change got my made my feet better, I would say.
How confident you feel like you play there? They want me there. I guess I'll play. I mean, they need me. They need me. Also in the illness that swept through the office, the line room. A lot of times coaches and players said that I was still relying for the groom. You know, getting you experience among others. What was that like for you and double dipping playing some tackle, playing some guard and same practice. It was based like a group effort like for me. We knew we had guys out and we just had to go back practice. All five guys is wherever they were playing. We just got to go. How much of that accelerate your development like that time with the ones you actually did. They really said it did. I was jumped in there. I didn't really know. We wanted to practice with practices, but like after those, I was like, you're my confidence grew. It seemed like you were sort of a settling in process for you and the Akron game. Maybe play got better if the game went on.
Especially in the ground game, things seem to take on. What was there a moment when it clicked on the field for you? Like was there nerves and then a time of settling in? I guess how taking you through kind of that first game mentally? Yeah. First game, obviously you can have nerves for the first time, so I'm sorry. But then like after the first couple plays, meaning I'm nerves naturally. So that's the first complete I was good. I was just rolling. Also, it was a weird thing. I was trying to play the whole state. It was also a good thing for me first start. Yeah. You, yeah, it's, but like I prepared well and camp and practice all week. And I was, I was ready. Yeah. I have two multi-year starters. I did a lot. I mean, I couldn't ask them, hey, what we got here? But I was prepared well. I mean, I was telling Jimmy and said, it's like a way our blocks were. Probably emotional side of it. What is it guys from Ohio? What does it mean to start a game?
It was always my dream to come here and play and start and having that like me. I was going to keep going, keep building those days and go to games and keep building. What a much younger Austin. No, not I don't think even I told like me I asked my younger self, even committed here. I wouldn't believe that now I have a couple of starts. Awesome. Has this happened faster than you? I guess you're technically a sophomore. No, I knew that year two, I was going to see you some playing time. Now starting week one year two, I didn't see that, but like I was ready in spring ball. I knew I was going to play some soft games. What does it mean to you to not only get the opportunities to play, but to like you play well enough now. Coaching staff trust you. You've been out there, whatever the situation was. So it's the earn that so early on the year.
I guess it shows like my preparation, my hard work and just everything I put into this. And I just finally show up on a field. There are moments, the soft season, the end of the spring, and the end of the season. I don't realize that you could play at this high level, with the ones, you know, if you needed to do it. Yeah, but definitely was in a training camp. I mean, it's like I can highly can tie every day. Like it feels a lot of confidence in doing it well and not like getting balled or anything. So there's defensive tag wasn't that easy. He wrote in Jason Moore in Taiwan. All those guys, I mean, pretty much anyone on the deepened line gets your face out of time. So, and came back as well. So yeah, I'm more collected how about this ability and the great thing is a lot. How much can he help you? He helped me a lot. And I'm proud that he's our starting center, not someone else's, but. I mean, he's like the captain of the line.
He's another voice on the line with guys like Josh Fryer and Josh Simmons, Donnie and Tiger. That means another voice and another captain on the line. Look, ways of having that. And I'm with this much experience. I mean, a lot, he can tell you right before the play was going on. How to block someone like what you need to do. That's a lot. Tiger, talk about how calm he is. How much does that benefit you? You have a guy who's kind of been there and seen the line. It makes us more calm, especially me and Tay, those are the first stars. So we were up here with Seth. He brought us down. I mean, we were like five. Our emotions weren't high. We were settling. Is that something he tells you? Is that something you could pick up on by how he's acting? How do you kind of mean sense what he's trying to do? How he's acting and what I mean, him, when we're on the side of him, both Josh and Donnie, he was telling us,
like, we got it, but it's pretty much like, oh, everyone, old, cool group. How much do you do that? As a first time starter, how much did you add in that? Me a lot. That was my first time ever using iPads. We didn't use the iPads in high school, but you can say, like, try to remember the defense. You can just come on the sideline and bring up a play and get help up really not. Probably the first or second, but after that, I thought we'd say all right. Awesome. Thank you very much. It seems like training part is important, but it's not the whole thing. They're getting bigger and stronger. It's like the culture part. Yeah. How much of a factor is that in a part of your change? It's also, it's a lot. I mean, I feel like you can't be able to transform your body like I have with people here come and do that without having that mentality part with it. It's like we always talk about competitions here and our culture is fight, so we're always here to compete.
I feel like that is just, that's what gets you in this mindset. When you talk about that transformation, can you just give us a little sense maybe with numbers or body fat or like your... What do you do in the weight group? How big is that transformation that feel? I don't have really specific numbers, but it's more just like I can just, I feel like feeling when I'm playing. I remember how it felt to play when I just got here and now I know how it feels to play like just today. It feels physically different on my body. It's like, it's getting used to it, that makes sense. I can't imagine feeling like that. Kadea also said about you that you are just a completely different guy from last year. You hear the word this year, so let's get it done. So you're here? Do you feel like you weren't at that place mentally? I think I was, but I think I had some, I would say like, kind of like confidence issues, like I was just, but you know, I mean, I work past it and I know I can, I know who I am and I know I can be here.
So if you have confidence issues, how do you get through it? Is it yourself, is it teammates, is there someone in your family that makes you believe that you can do it? I know I can do it. It's not like those are all, it's on the past now. Did the past play time, the very obvious opportunity, guys had the stuff up to be able to be on the business? That helped you get over that confidence issue there because it's now a never-ending situation. So, kind of, it's just like... I mean, it's just being here. I feel like being here every day, working with the guys every day, just like, you know, you become this person that you might not have, like, you might not have felt like you were before that, but like coming here, working every day, stacking these days, like, you know, I just feel like I realized who I am and I know what I can do now.
Well, I want to be able to have some of this for all of you, but are you, as they said, you've had to like, convince yourself that you actually belong here and you've been... I knew I could play here. I mean, it's just it was like the... I don't know how to explain it. I've always known I could play here. I'm just like, let's go. Like, I'm ready to attack. What are the guys that helped you to figure that out? First of all, I think KJ was a big influence. Ty Hamilton and Ty League, they all helped me a bunch last year, kind of just pushing through, you know. I really plan as much, so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt, so I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot of it. One of those younger guys, we're seeing it out here. It's the first time I've heard all of your last years. What have you seen from Lille? Because I feel like I should have real forgot about him because he was hurt. Now he's running, you know, almost a second man out behind you and Ty.
What have you seen him doing? Well, as a workhorse, he goes, stay quiet, he's going to work hard, and that's what I love about him. He focuses, he don't really talk much. He's going to get a job done, do a job right, rarely has any mistakes. What would be a successful season? A national championship? When all the games we don't want to lose anything, we got a mindset that we can't beat and the leads we got to go show it. That mindset is different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year, this year even more so, you guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like enough as it went up to me. Does that just keep feeling different? Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same word. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this, so we got to go bigger, go home and we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan, but when you look at what they did, they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute.
You know what I mean? You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that, hey, you guys want to win a national championship, but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year, like you're that close? So I'm saying, we just like work harder. That's kind of coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares, just work harder. Like those, you know, we'll play Georgia, the same thing. Last, last play, you know, they went on the win in 90. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles? Of course it's frustrating, but you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought that was working harder than you always find out there's a little more you could have been doing? Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's what growing up is basically in college.
I thought French Mira was working as hard as I could, but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. What do you need it to be to be your best? 80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder in shape. The idea of a potential is 16 or 17 years. What about that idea that makes you nervous about can you last that long? I think, I think I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys that come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody, like, online, D-line, we got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get deaf pieces on the D-line and online and everywhere else so we can last that long.
Speaking of that, what's your name? If you like playing that new snap to game last year because I don't know if any of us were really expected to be playing that next time. Yeah, I did, unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought like, there are no moments you know I can go sit down or something, but we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame, two or North, those kind of games. Of course I wouldn't be because I know I can contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Taden McDonald? Is he got the game? Have you guys ever seen him? Oh, yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac animal. You haven't really seen it yet, but in practice he shows all the time. He's just, he's just, he's growing right now. He has a work ethic. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook, things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to 6-3, you're 3-27, he's 3-26. Yeah, I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's just got to develop more and get in the playbook. So really a lot on you older guys, there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well?
Yeah, definitely. We got to be leaders. Like I said, we got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we got to get them right during the all season. So they can play. And not just play, they want to contribute, like make plays, tackle a sex. Each one of the freshmen class is a little bigger or bigger. Do you know this guy's kind of, it doesn't kind of allow you to solve the first. Yeah, there definitely is some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of some of the day too. And I'm not as on, but throughout the workouts, they've been working hard, you know, they're determined. I can say that. And it looks like they're ready to work with me. How important this notes feels like. There's a lot of great defense is that you have big athletic defense attack to get up space. But also, you know, right? Is that because I have a choir maybe from a great defense to have guys like you that have some balls, but also a great team.
I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners are like team of North, they got two good, uh, detaco two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia two athletic detacles. I think that's definitely need if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. You think about this. They don't define by the defense. Like what's Georgia, Jordan Davis and James Carter and let's Michigan is. Chris Jenkins. Tell me more questions. You know, how I mean, you understand it because you play it, but I feel like some time I don't know are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to. I think so. I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah, like in the combine just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving for the 478s and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think it when you think about this freakish attack, how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch the calm on.
I watch it. Do the drills. I have to see you like looking like my film. So I think I'm up there. Well, I think you become like a artist. The way you're going. You're not doing as much a level. Do you have like a goal? I don't remember how many. I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that. But I think he said it. I think they can count some of them and some of them were like just missed it. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's goes big and we do as a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter. That is anyway you can. It's just great for the defense. You know, just that little thing covered his eye. You know, he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player. So, so it's something that you really, really have to work on. That's one of the things that you can maybe work on the most.
There are a few guys that I've seen. Oh, that past. We don't have to ask. I think I just have like a like an eye for the ball kind of. I kind of just look at the quarterback and just I see him like load up. I just try to get his ways. And sometimes he's those. I'm here to do it. I mean, they get frustrated by you know, we're team. You know, we're just getting better. I should lot of a lot of different backs, man. They just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs. I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you I give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey auto. He was injured this year. I like McCaffrey. Best back in this drive. I lead out of the yard. That's y'all decision.
Playing with a Howard. When I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard man. He's just such a great lead. Such a great leader, man. It's just like in moments where you know, usually a lot of players they fold man. He was just always calm and relaxed, man. He just the leader that he was, man. That's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah, he's shoot. He's going to be really good, man. He's on Coastal like I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James people's man. He's smart. The way that he goes about his business man. He's mature. And so man, he's growing, you know, just as a person and as a player. And so man, yeah, definitely Ohio State. You know that running back room is in great hands. I was driving up looking at the U.S. spot and I was talking about the race and personality and the approach of the federal defense. Yeah. Coach, Coach Hartlan, man. He's full of energy, man.
And he's creative as well, you know. I'm just learning from him as well. Trying to run more outside the backfield was being able to learn from Coach Hartlan. And so he's definitely creative at what he does and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so I think that'll do really good. Straight away. Straight away. Straight away. Straight away. Straight away. Straight away. Straight away. Straight away. Straight away. Straight away. Straight away. Straight away. And so being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing. Even if it's not the play, I'll just every game and the intensity keeps getting higher and higher. So yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it. You know, each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State. You know, I definitely feel like Ohio State. They definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship and then shoot right after that. I'm writing sample Florida and I'm right to it. And so yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at your birth performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us, man. They did a really good job. I mean, that would be cool. The bucket in the air. No, I haven't. Do you think it's a city champion? Tampa, Tampa nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. I think it's really easy. The 40, the broad and the vert. You've been on races in Austin, Walker. Do you speak to your mentality of like when you've got a linebacker or something in the shaft? You're the new and you're in training as well. Yeah. Yeah, no, man. It's really all about technique and then it's about mindset as well. And so I say, you know, it's for the love of my brother.
It's for the love of Will Howard. It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, you know, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Will, I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. It's like, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit. And so I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that. But I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so man, it's for the love of my brothers, though, man, making sure that the ball get in their hands, you know, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. You had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you'd be working on right now when you need to? In my game. You can't really work on this, you know, in all season, I feel like. It's more so, you know, you got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run. You know, maybe it's really just continuing to run through tackles. And so that's, I feel like that's one of the areas in my game. You know, I want to continue to get better. I feel like I did a good job of that in my senior year. And so I just want to continue to build on that. So you know what I'm saying? Yes, I did. Yes, I did.
So people say you look like now that you are out there. You get back in nursing and you've been meddling with people around. I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera shoe. Yeah, man, I would come here great, great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield. And man coverage, you're getting on that line backer. And so. Yeah, I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself, man.
And the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard. You know, even shoot, I don't know, every game, I think he had a, every game was a good game for him, man. And so, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely, man, he's going to be a special player, man. He really is. I think you're going to have to look like you're actually coming for a one-star kid, you know, some injuries. I think he's a master's in, when he went back on it, what do you want to stand down on? Man, a lot of ups and downs, man, it's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. It's just, I'm not going to have something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't. It's not too much, they can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ.
And so, being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments, where it's tough, you know, where it's slow. And so, that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so, you know, the back of the firm, Peterson Power and Judges, is through that effect. Which aspect do you do those other individuals that you run to come from being around power? Man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. Am I just really loved their mentality? Especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham mentality, man. That boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted, you know. You see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards.
And as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, stiff arm, and somebody, and she, that's a gain of 10. And so, you know, some of the things he does, he just realizes two different things actually. Yeah. Shoot, I think, yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, too, beyond it. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong, and so, you know, he's able to do those things. So, yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game, and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quincham. You know, I want to look at his game, and it's like, man, where, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. What's your last experience in the game? Julian Sand. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, but he's going to be a great quarterback, man. He's so, so accurate. And so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, I'm continuing to grow as a leader, continuing to grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for high state. Thanks, boss. I'm sorry. I know just the quarterback position. I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've definitely been vocal.
And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask Julian Sand as well. I remember before I recruited, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see James people, I see similarities to both of their games, I feel like they play the same. So, appreciate you all.
Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Well, I got coming in last year. I knew the role. So I just tacked Eric Dave really the same way. Thank you. It's taking advantage. Very rep physically. How different are you? Weight wise body wise on that? From the year. I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240. You know, like 240 for right now. Last year, I played at like 236 to 37. So what does it feel like at 240 for? I feel like almost a different machine out there.
Yeah. What does it feel like to be running around out there like you are? But with more, more back. I just feel like I'm like, like, like more downhill, like stronger. Like I'm taking all the bloods better. It's bigger. Yeah. Is it daunting? Maybe that's not the correct term. But to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year. And you played quite a bit last year instead. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? You just got to get ready to just play 30 more snaps. But are you, are you, how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-stand point? Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My, I'm ready for it. The text is open. It's a rematch. But it's not really two different teams compared to the last time you all played and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener like that, we've been, we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming. So we know we got to do, we've been prepared for it.
I already just broadly worked with him. Yeah, I think he has to play right now. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman like he in the, he in the book, he stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy. Like he saw like the saw line to him. Or like you said, you're ready. You know, you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready? So every team needed for me? Yeah, because that's pretty much what my role was. Just whenever I was needed, I had to step up. So I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready, is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready, I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, most of me. I think I'm there. A different is that feeling this year than last season? That's possible. Asked one more time. How different is that with trial and field? That's just the emotional thing called that. If it was last year, you knew you were a homemaker.
I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year. But I kind of go about it the same way. Like last year, I was attention over everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. Some reason I was in the same place. I was a little bit tired. It won't work? Nobody worked your watch. I say... Scrab my gun. I say, like when you think of me, you would think of like a bullet, like a silver bullet. I don't really know bullet. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. You know what I want to body that? No, I ain't got to be my nickname, but... I'm saying that the... Oh yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's it. I'm going to ask you a question for Patricia's style and how it's free. How does that fit you? And what are you enjoying about the playing and that kind of style?
I think it fit me because... I don't know, I just like the defense. I feel like we got... Like you said, we got a lot of freedom and we moving around a lot of the times. It's like, you know, I don't know. I don't really know how to answer that. It's okay, does it... You can go on your instincts a little bit more, maybe? And it's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on, but it's like... I just like it's defense. I like her Patricia defense. I like what you got going on. What was it, Sadwin? CJ left the ring. Uh... No, I wanted to much sad. I was kind of like happy for him. Yeah, that's what you want. No. No. All right. That's my dog. I'm kind of missing a little bit, but I'm happy for him. Well, Val, thank you. Go ahead. One last question. Coach Daze talked a lot about the guys who played some last year, but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for... That wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own. Yeah.
How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year, but will be in this bigger role and along the summer year, your classmates? Yeah, I do feel like... I did win the Nadi Lash, but like you said, my role wasn't the same as how it was going to be this year. So, yeah, I definitely want to go get another one experienced that feeling, maybe on the field, a lot more place. Great. Oh, Val, thank you very much. Thanks, I got the answer. You need to offense compared to NFL. Especially with the way he uses receivers, how do you anticipate your role? Changing it, how do you view the offense from a receiver perspective specifically? Yeah. I mean, I think he likes to really push the ball down the field. He likes to be balanced. He likes to give different looks to a difference. You know, we're going to not to try to get too much into it, but you know, we're going to use some motion, move some guys around and things of that nature. I think for myself, I feel comfortable playing any of the positions that is asked whether it's the slot, the outside positions, and unique part about our offense is, I don't think necessarily
you play the X or the Z because the pit on the formation or the hash, you can be the opposite. And be the X, but then you're to the field now you're the Z. So you got to really learn the entire concept and know where you're out in the field, which I think makes everybody smarter players because you don't pigeonhole yourself, I just play X. I only know this position. Like, you get in two minutes, you're the Z. Now you got to know what to do. You may have the clear out route or you may have the backside dig. Like, you got to know what you're doing. So I think he doesn't just say, like, we're going to do this offense. He's really trying to create an offense that fits our personnel really well. That feel boundary thing. Yeah. That's a thing in college, but it seems like it's more unique to clip. Is that something you're used to seeing in other offenses? Yeah, definitely. I mean, I think if I'm on the left hash, like technically I'm the X, you know, I'm in the boundary, but if we're on the right hash, I'm still on the left side, I'm really the Z in the concept because I'm to the field, I'm to the strength of the tie-down. So I've been in offenses like it's similar like that before and I just think he, one thing
I think that's really stood out as the compliments of our routes that we have so far. I feel like we have a chance to really run similar stems, but there's different routes off those stems and things like that, which I think for receiver like myself who you get, you know, a really good look at DBs and they study your film, they study your splits. Like having routes that look the same, but break off at different angles is extremely important because it feels like you have some versatility in your bag to go out with versus like you got this hitch again, your backside, that's all you got, you know what I mean? So, yeah, he's just been a really good person to work with and he's been really communicative with the leaders and how we want this offense to look like and some of the ideas that we may have as well. So it's been a really cool transition. You talk about the transitions, your third offense in three years, probably your fourth and sixth years. Yeah. How do you not kind of build up some barriers? Yeah, man, I got to do this again. Right.
I think, you know, human nature is always a factor in whatever you do in life, but I think I try to make a conscious choice of coming in with a new year mentality each and every year. And I think it's easy because we've had so many changes and it's been great working with Marcus and Jaden and Jeff and Sam, all of everybody. Like it's been great with working with all the quarterbacks and I just have a mentality and not really being complacent. Like I try to really focus on the things that I can come back better at this year and I've been working my butt off to do that. So I think the easy thing and when I was younger, you're like, dang, like you just want that consistency. You know what I mean? Like you want that something you could depend on, but like life isn't always like that. So I've been reinvigorated because of just the energy that DQ brings into our building each and every day and the coaches as well. Like it's fun competing, you know what I mean?
And sometimes I could get lost in the grind, but I think the reason why you make it here at this level is because you fall in love with the competition of it. And I think the competition breathes the success because that is really where you, the iron truly sharpens iron. So you know other guys are going to make plays, but you get excited to go in there and know that the next day we're going to go right back after the defense. So for myself, I'm just looking forward to continue to grow with the quarterbacks that we have. I mean, year six now, which is extreme blessing and one of the leaders in our room and I just try to take the bull by the horns with that. And so that's really been my focus and you know, I'm excited for another year. So us, it's looked like you're being more vocal on the sideline to help young guys. Definitely. Something you decided this offseason or? I think that's been a part of my maturation process as a leader. I've always seen myself as somebody that was a leader by example.
But from coaches and other teammates I've had over the years, guys like to hear what I have to say for whatever reason sometimes. You know, and I think the biggest thing where I've tried to figure out where I fit in with my vocal leadership is I never wanted to be like a dictator. You know what I mean? I never wanted to tell guys what to do or be a yellow or things like that. Like when I say something, I wanted to have power. I wanted to have meaning. And I hope, you know, the guys would feel the same way if they were to ask them that question. Because I want to see all these guys win, man. Like it's hard to make it in this league and stay in a career. And so anyway, I could help the receivers, the DBs. I'm talking to some alignment, Johnny, who's rehabbing his foot. You know what I mean? Like everybody has a role and everybody has a different story and path. And so if I could share what I've been through my testimony to help them or do things that kind of slow down the process, I'm going to try to do that because we need everybody from the rookies to the 10 year vets to make this thing work. So more so, I try to speak to what I know and really those honest conversations that
I try to have with guys, what they know I'm coming from a good place. And I think I'm not the type of guy where I'm just going to talk to them. Like if they see something, like I could take a coaching point from Luke McCaffrey. I could take a coaching point from Deami from Jahan from Marcus from anybody. You know, like I think that's what makes you a great player when you can really be coachable from anybody and not take it from a personal standpoint. Hi. How are you doing? Good. Going back to what you were saying about Cliff and the offense, how is he as a teacher in teaching all of us? Yeah, I mean, I think he does a really great job of making things simple first and foremost. He doesn't over-coach. And I think that's the trust that he has in our group and his coaches, our position coaches to fill in the details. So we'll have an install meeting and it'll be a good amount of time. But then our position coaches will have time and we'll make it specific to that position. And so then we'll come in and have a walkthrough. And then after that, we'll have another walkthrough.
And so I don't think there's been a time where I've come out here and I'm kind of worried about what I got. You know what I mean? And when you get into certain offices, there could be so many details where you could be overwhelmed. And I think then it forces, it kind of separates guys in a sense that like one guy may study more than another guy. But when you have these sessions that we have where we're having an installs in the morning, we're having two walkthroughs and then we're coming on the field and doing it. Like, I think you'd notice a lot of guys are playing a lot faster and more confident because he's keeping it simple. But also he's very particular in what he's expecting. But it's not a lot. So there's not a pressure of to get it right. But at the same time, you know it's expected of you and you know you're going to have the tools given to you to be successful out there on the field. And this is just the totality of change from front office players coaches, the turf field. What does that been like for you just to see what's going on? It's been fun. You know I think from Mr. Harris and the entire ownership group down to Adam Peters, down
to DQ, down to Jada who he drafted and bringing in Marcus and Jeff and all those guys. And down to leaders we have on our team. I think it was extremely specific on the way they tried to build this thing going into this year. First, having the right people, bringing in leaders, bringing in guys who loved to compete. First thing that DQ said when he came here was, and his first meeting like if you love to compete, this is going to be the place for you. And I love it. You know what I mean? I love bags and going at it with the DBs every day. The little mundane stuff can seem a little boring. But I think that was where you make the gains during the off season where you're really focused on, hey I'm going to give all I got for this day and I'm going to get better and then I'm going to learn from the film and come back tomorrow and ready to do it again. And he also understands like the benefits of having breaks. He's given us breaks. We've had weeks off here and there that we can compose ourselves but then come back and give it all we got. You know what I mean? And when you got a coach that understands the physicality of an entire season where you guys do need breaks by the same time we're going to get after it.
It makes it fun as a leader because you can take that to your room and be like, yo we got these, we got this week. It's something that's extremely important but you know we have this little break coming up where you're going to get your your mind and your body and your soul right. So coming into this season I'm really optimistic of what we can be this year and I think it's started with the foundation that the ownership group and the entire staff has built and now it's on myself as a leader to continue to hone that in into the locker room. But I think it's great because we have so many great leaders from all across the league who have won and we got Bobby Wagner in there. You know what I mean? I asked a hall of fame or so like you know being able to have kind of guys like that that you can lean on that can sometimes take over that leadership role where it doesn't fall on one person. I think it's extremely refreshing and knowing that everybody's on the same page and the message is the same allows you to go out there with confidence and always expect to let you. Terri, you seem to spend many of your off seasons learning about things beyond football
hobbies. What have you been doing in this all season so far to hobbies or increase your knowledge of this the world around you? That's a good question. Play a lot of golf. That day just keeps my competitive juices flowing. Planning the wedding. That's going well and I just been grinding like honestly. You know I mean I've been hungry this all season like I started working out you know pretty early and you start to see guys like coming back and it's just fun to like to be here and compete and feel like everybody's on the same page you know what I mean like and so for me I'm a grind every off season but just this one just feels like it's the start of something you know new and special and the foundation of is extremely important and to be a part of that to have a hand in that you know it's an honor you know and I put a lot of expectation on myself to come out here and be the guy that I know I'm capable
of and also like taking the next step and being somebody that our quarterbacks that can trust and believe in so this all season was pretty simple for me it was just really about you know working and grinding and getting better. Talk to me Jayden before. If anything so far I know we haven't seen everything but in terms of his arm strength the throws he's making any surprises so far about the types of his ability in that regard. Definitely I think after the second or third crosser that he threw I started telling receivers like hey you got to get your head around you know I mean because again each quarterback throws the ball differently and sees the field differently so sometimes on crossers a lot of quarterbacks may like to see you cross the ball and get into that open zone over there if it's man flattened off they like to see you get open with him he has a really good anticipation over the middle of the field where he can make those throws and give you a chance to catch and run and he's really accountable too like we had to play the day where he felt like he missed me and you know it's not a big deal at all you know I mean him and I could talk to those things and there's been a play
that I've talked to him about I could do a better job but again like that open that open form of communication from a rookie I think is is very rare and I think it speaks to the confidence he knows who he is but he's also not afraid to say when he's wrong and he knows he needs room to improve but his touch on the deep balls is amazing you know I love getting extra reps with practice after practice with him we're just catching the top end of a deep ball as big for me you know I mean I get to track the ball over my shoulder and as big for him to be able to get used to dropping the ball in the bucket but he just naturally has an ability to throw the ball he sees the windows really well and now he's just you know continue to get adjusted to the speed in the past rush I think he's reps that he's getting are unbelievable during 11 on 11 because he's getting to feel pain and all in and DA and Cleveland Farrow like we got some dogs up there who are gonna come after him you know what I mean and we got some great guys up front who are gonna protect them and so these reps I feel like are even better than just seven on seven seven on seven I think he could do in the sleep to be fair like he throws the ball really well but when
you get this 11 on 11 two-minute drill you're putting them in game like situations and I'm looking them in his eye I'm like we play a real ball now like we we we playing you know what I mean and you just see no no anxiousness in his game in his demeanor which is extremely exciting and and then you know he's extremely light hearted and he's always smiling so he's joking with lime and D line he's just cool with everybody and like I said like for a rookie quarterback to come in like that where guys are gravitating to him and he's not afraid to be who he is that's dope I think he has a bright future for himself the tough losses the tough seasons can weigh on a player sure you're entering the prime of your career J.A. kind of mentioned it last year all he cares about is winning he wants to win now is there a sense of urgency you obviously always want to win yeah knowing that you know you're you're getting to the prime your career like you want to win now yeah I think that's a fair question I think you know you start to evaluate when you I'm in year six and you know it's how fast it goes and I try not to put the cart before the horse were looking too far ahead by the same time
you do want to win you want to be a part of a winning culture and have a chance to win the Super Bowl and the playoffs and all those things like that's why we we do this personally and I'm just excited with being a part of an organization in an environment where now like everybody's on the same page in the in the in the message is uniform and it speaks from the top down and it reflects the guys that they're bringing in you know all the guys that they brought in are guys who are hungry who are competitors who not only fighting for spots but we're going to help us win games and when you're around an environment like that like that that that makes you excited makes you hopeful and you know you don't know how it's going to turn out until we start playing games but the foundation is extremely important and I think this offseason we've really done a great job of building that they have and then when a coach Quinn guy here building with this team so I feel like we're going to be going into this offseason really knowing we all got to individually become ready for camp but the the message is clear to come back to camp ready to
compete and and be ready to win thanks Derek appreciate you guys one of the funniest guys on the team right here we plan as much so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt so I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been through well as a workhorse he he goes stay quiet he gonna work hard and that's all I love about him he focuses he don't really talk much he's going to get a job done do a job right really has any mistakes what would be a successful season national championship I ring when all the games we don't
want to lose anything we got a mindset that we can't be beat we just gotta go show it seems like you guys expect the national championship over here this year even more so you get all come back for this you guys have all decided like that not as a lot but is that this can feel the difference or is there not really any difference it's just the same work I was definitely a difference everyone working harder we noticed our last run like we most of us don't have any years after this so we got to go go bigger going home and we're not trying to go home finished big we know what you guys think of Michigan but when you look at what they did they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute right you know what I mean I mean you you were right there something goes a little different you guys could have been one like that against them does that tell you anything about like that hey you guys want to win a national championship but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year like you're that close so I'm saying we just like work harder that's that's kind of
coach makes of saying you know nobody cares just work harder like those no one played Georgia the same thing yeah last last play you know they went on the win in 90 so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season I think would be fine how frustrating is that you're that close against the last two national title uh of course as you know it's frustrating but you can't change the outcome you can't really dwell on it you just got to you know come back and work harder do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change is that as you get older you kind of learn I thought I was working hard and then you always find out there's a little more you could have been doing yeah definitely I mean that's how that's what growing up is basically in college I thought freshman year I was working it's hard as I could but now I look back at it I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now so just to learn anything 80 85 I mean I can it's all on me I just I think it's a little higher I was just trying to be
funny but I mean that's all on me I just got to run harder get the shape I think I think I think I definitely can last I was just you know we got to get the young guys that come along with us we can't play 50 snaps again that's just too much on our bodies uh just everybody like online D line we got to get those younger guys to play you know get that pieces on the D line and online and everywhere else so we can last that long run speaking of that uh yeah I did unless we were like winning by like a line uh I thought like there are no moments you know I can go sit down or something but we're playing them big games like you know Notre Dame too or North those kind of games of course I want to be because I know I can contribute
and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald's you got the kick of you guys in a second here? Oh yeah definitely K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal y'all you haven't really seen it yet but in practice he shows all the time he's just he's just he's growing right now he has to work at the thing he just has to get you know in the playbook things like that you guys are about the exact same size it's listed your boat listen six three you're three twenty seven he's three twenty six yeah he's I kind of look at him like my my junior but you know K-Mac he's gonna be a great player he's got to develop more and get into playbook so really a lot on you older guy there's that large group of young guys and then they see seniors in the back as part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well yeah definitely we got to be leaders um like I say we got to have them play this year we can't just play all the snaps they got to get in there and get some work and we got to get them right during the all season so they can play and not just play they want to like contribute like make plays tackle sex yeah they're definitely some big dudes um and they all
work hard I'm really seeing much of something day two you know I'm passing on but throughout the workouts they've been working hard you know they they're determined I just say that and it looks like they're ready to work at me I'm going to support this notes feels like there's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defense attack which you can eat up space but also move you know right that is that is that an environment maybe for great defense to have guys like you that have some balls but also a great feeling I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners uh like team of north they didn't know they got two good detacled two athletic detacles look at Georgia two athletic detacles so I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams if you think about this they're going to fight by the defense attack what's Georgia Jordan Davis deal harder let's miss again it's Chris Jenkins I mean you understand it was you play it but I feel like some time I don't know
it's about people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to I think so I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakish detacles yeah like in the combine just now you see in like those guys they're moving four to four seven eights and things like that so we'll see and when you think about this freakish how do you think you fit into that old of that kind of player watch that and say yeah that's me uh yeah definitely I think I'm top-notch when it comes to detacles but I don't want to you know get a big head but you know I watch it come on I watch it do the drills I have Tate here you like look at my my film so I think I'm up there with all the time I think you become like a artist who comes to batting up passes the way I think when you're going to spring practice you're not doing as much a weapon of 11 I mean as many as I can have I think I have more than that but I
think they're counseling I think they're gonna encounter some of them and some of them where I like just listed so but I think we work on Joe matching the hand I think that's uh goes big and uh what we do is a D line you know just affecting the quarterback is anywhere you can it's just great for the defense you know just that little thing covering his eye you know he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player so so it's something that you really really have to work on you know you can do that with what you can do that's one of the things that you can maybe work on the most you can bring your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen like oh that past you guys we don't have to ask for the style I think I just have like a like a eye for the ball kind of I kind of just look at the quarterback and just I see him like load up I just try to get in his ways and sometimes he throws it to me I mean they get frustrated by you know we're a team you know we're just getting back a lot of a lot of different backsman and just learn to grow for them
you gotta pick your top three backs you gotta go right now I don't really have a top three but I'll give you I'll give you one I would say say quan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey auto he was injured this year I like McCaffrey best back in this draft I'll lead that up the yard that's y'all that's y'all decision playing well Howard when I'm going to remember most uh we're Howard man he's just such a great lead such a great leader man it's just like in moments where you know usually a lot of players they fold man he was just always calm and relaxed man he just the leader that he was man that's one thing I'm gonna remember about him yeah he's shoot he's gonna be really good man he's um coast lock I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia just that one two punch with
them both as well they're gonna be really good backs and so James people's man he's smart the way that he goes about his business man he's mature and so man he's growing you know just as a as a person in as a player and so man yeah definitely Ohio State you know that running back from his engraved hands yeah coach coach hard line man he's full of energy man and he's creative as well you know I'm just learning from him as well you know I'm trying to run more outside the backfield was being able to learn from coach hard line and so he's definitely creative at what he does and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well and so I think that'll do really good that's probably what you're interested in just intensity man then since the other playoffs um every game and it's like the intensity got you know higher and higher and so you know being able I know in the lead it's it's the same thing even if it's not the playoffs just every every game and then
since it keeps getting higher and higher and so yeah you just I know you got to bring it you know each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State you know I definitely feel like Ohio State they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that you know I just remember even before going through this process I'll I'll talk to a lot of players um before then and they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them you know for the NFL and so yeah yeah yeah I know I took a couple days off after the um national championship and then shoot right after that I'm right in right in Tampa Florida and I'm right to it and so um yeah I think while trained I trained at um your morph performance um I think it's called the house of athlete or the compound now um they did they did a good job man they're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us man they were they did a really good job the bucking near you know I haven't Tampa Tampa nice this is nice this is a nice city man really nice
uh the 40 to broad and avert yeah yeah no man uh it's really all about technique and then it's about mine said as well and so um I say you know it's for the love of my brother it's for the love of will highway it's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter just making sure you know um first of all my quarterback doesn't get sacked um and I I told will I think it was before the first game I was like I got your brother it's uh I said man I'm not gonna let you get hit you know um and so um I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack I'm not sure that um but I know if I did I haven't given up too many and so man it's for the love of my brother's though man making sure that the ball get in their hands you know the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed in my game uh you can't really work on this you know in all season I feel like it's more so
you know you got to put the pads on you got to go through some inside run you know maybe uh it's really just continuing to run through tackles and so that's I feel like that's one of the areas in my game you know I want to continue to get better I I feel like I did a good job of that my senior year and so I just want to continue to build on that yes I did yes I did uh I did me with um new Orleans as well um I never got that comparison actually um I know I'm a Camera sure yeah man I have a Camera great great back man um just what he does and those 101 matchups he's dangerous man and he's so smooth he's so smooth as well I'm not going like he's smooth yeah um inside zone from stack being able to hit that thing downhill and I'll say the next one it's probably just an option route out of the backfield you know and man
and man coverage you're getting on that linebacker and so yeah I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself man in the way that man um he approaches the game he comes in with the mindset you know he's going to work every single week you know every practice you know he's working hard you know um even shoot I don't know every good I think he had it every game was a good game for him man and so but still man he always has the mentality the mindset that you know he's going to come in each and every day he's going to continue to work and get better man and so he's definitely man he's going to be a special player man he really is man man a lot of ups and downs man it's just how you respond to adversity and I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better is
not have something to lean on now you know I remember before I met him you know going through those adversity I had nothing to run to you know you can run to people but they still can't it's not too much they can't truly help you you know I feel like you know I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ and so being able to lean on him you know he gives you in those moments where it's tough you know where it's low and when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about he gives you he gives you that peace and comfort you know even in those moments man where it's so hard that you can't you can't explain it's like man I'm going through this but like how am I still feel with this internal joy you know how do I have so much peace in this situation and so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you and so man those guys have such a great mentality man I might just really love their mentality especially
Q as well you know I talked about Will Howard his leadership but Quench your own mentality man that boy just yeah that boy just gifted you know you see you know sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like you know he should have a negative five yards and as soon as you know it you know he that running through somebody still farming somebody and she was just gaining a 10 just realized he's different to God yeah um shoot I think yeah man I think it's just like he's just gifted man to be honest he's just gifted you know he's he's a big back you know he's strong and so you know he's he's able to do he's able to do those things and so yeah man it's definitely you know I look at his game and I want to you know at the same time I want to learn from Quench on you know I want to look at this game is like man where where can I get better at as well you know that's the type of player I am I'm always looking to get better man I'm always looking to grow as a player Julian San oh yeah he's gonna be a great but he's gonna be a great quarterback man he's so so accurate and so um he's definitely man I know Coach Dez definitely going to get him right just you
know um container grow as a leader container grow as a player and so he's going he's gonna be really good for high state uh he's that I know just the quarterback position um I feel like you know the quarterbacks in the past they've they've definitely been vocal and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to um ask him Julian San as well it's to be that vocal leader and lead the um and lead to offense and lead to steam shoot man he has he has a build like JK Dobbins and um I kind of see them you know similar similarities in their game as well and I know JK Dobbins he was a great running back um I feel like he's not talked about his none um a lot but man his career here you watch his highlights is is great I remember um before I recruit before I committed here I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every every um one of his years here like four or five times and so man he was such a great back and um I feel like you know um when I see JK Dobbins when I see um James
people I see similarities to both of their games I feel like they play the same and so appreciate you all yeah I'm going
so all I got coming in last round new world so I just attacked every day really the same way it's taking advantage very rare physically how different are you weight wise body wise on that from the year ago oh I think I got a lot bigger I'm like 240 you know like 244 right now last year I played it like 236 to 37 what does it feel like 244 or you feel like almost a different machine out there yeah what's it what does it feel like we run around out there like you are but with more more bad I just feel like I'm like like like like more downhill like stronger like I'm taking all the bloods better it's bigger no is it don't think uh maybe that's not the correct term but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year and stuff what do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more this is gotta get ready to just play 30 more snaps so but are you are you
how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8th standpoint yeah I'm looking forward to it I'm ready for it I'm ready for it I'm ready for it I think the text is open it's a rematch so to speak but it's not really two different teams compared to one time y'all played how's that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the where an opener of that magnitude yeah with an opener like that we've been um we've been emphasizing it a lot we know we got coming so we know we gotta do we're prepared for it I think Riley ready to play right now he he advanced freshman like he ended he in the book he stood in like he advanced and his measurable is crazy like he saw like saw like so I tell you said you're ready what was that process like during last season could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready so whatever the team needed for you yeah because that's pretty much what my role was just whenever I was needed I had to step up so I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready
for this year when you say ready is it more a physical thing is it a mental thing when I say ready I think it's pretty much like everything physically mentally mostly I think I'm there oh I still want one time how different is that response bill oh I feel like it's uh it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year but I kind of go about it the same way like last year I was intentional with everything I did I feel like this year it's gonna be the same thing it's probably a little bit more and what word? uh I say describe my game I say like when you think of me you would think of like a like a bullet like a silver bullet
I don't really a bullet I'm always on the ball that's how I like to play and think no I ain't ain't gotta be my nickname but oh yeah yeah yeah yeah it's like oh think it fit me because I don't know I just like the defense I feel like we got like you say we got a lot of freedom and we moving around a lot a lot of the terms is like no I don't know I don't really know how to answer that that's okay does it kind of you can go on your instincts a little bit more baby that's not so thinking of too much I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on but it's like I just like it's deep I like how it's pretty different I like what you got going on now I wanted to much sad I was kind of like happy for you like yeah that's what you want no
all right that's my dog I'll say yeah kind of missing a little bit but yeah I'm happy for you though I don't think go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own yeah how much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your classmates yeah I do feel like um yeah I do feel like I did win a nati last year but like you said my role wasn't same as how's gonna be this year so yeah I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling maybe on the field a lot more place that's it great oh Bill thank you very much thank you so I feel like I kind of have a lot of leaders on the D line at the D In position so we kind of just count off each other and I'm just going to talk to you guys so you need to know what's the most important thing you have to do is just try to put this in place so you need to know what's the most important thing to do
um it's very competitive and we love it we all competitive people we all love to fish each other and that's really the thing in the best side of all this we feel like we all just kind of bouncing off each other and see what one person does and we kind of build it into our actual box and we all kind of just kind of build one great thing one do you remember last year and you got to get the shot at the full back in the boat and uh did they approach you with that idea and two coached him I had to get come up out because you're a judge actually all your club being okay get a touchdown so I definitely did it in high school I was pulled back and a little bit of tidying so I feel like they kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson honestly you left watching it too before you left and uh feel like you playing that seed and coach day's head and uh coach day kind of just went for it and uh try to do the best I could to do it exactly continuing now new playbook I did not know yeah I've got that far um I like to think myself as a football player I can really play any position on the field
you need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and uh try to do my best for you kid jack you the same thing oh yeah graphically that's what came just talking to coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of saw you and got out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back just got a win into those respected and and how did that help you maybe get the right mindset I guess when it gets going um definitely kind of seeing it all the way through I feel like uh people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it how long the season is now what you got to do to prepare for and what to happen in all that time from here to to then so uh I feel like we definitely just coached in me kind of connected maybe kind of just talks man oh man and uh he kind of just sent it straight to me and I feel like we kind of both are going on and we know we're making it yada making each other better every day we got the four best the ends five best the ends honestly and then college football and we're going to be one of the best D-Rimes and college football you feel like a better player today anymore if you have a
well I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader and uh kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and uh feel like I'm kind of helping out more I mean it sounds bizarre but I mean the season goes by so fast already so when you're kind of like week ten and you're like wow it's already week ten so now it's kind of gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of save it because you're in your career for like refreshments for this crazy but you don't want to spend all your power in the first first month of the year right in here is that not pace yourself that I mean there's a light thing yeah definitely definitely going to have to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices how much is Larry talked to you guys about the last question right here 2016 2017 four NFL two-fetched all in several just know what you've talked about I mean he doesn't have to talk about it we know
about it you see it in every day we watch the film we see them all working together we know what it could be we know we could become so we know we we're right at the same at the right place at the right time and god wanted us to be here and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and uh just perfect our craft together and I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together it's something special really playing as much so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt so I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been doing one of those younger guys we're seeing it's the first time it's hurt all your life seriously what have you seen from well because kind of a question we all forgot about it because he was hurt now he's running you know almost a second man out of time you and tie what have you seen in the legend? uh well as a workhorse he he goes stay quiet you don't work hard and that's all I love about it focuses he don't really talk much he's going to get the job done do a job right really has any mistakes what would be a successful season uh a national championship?
I'm reading when all the games we don't want to lose anything uh we got a mindset that we can't be beat we just got to go show it. That mindset different it seems like you guys expect the national championship every year this year even more so you guys have all come back for this you guys have all decided like enough as a lot because that is you can feel the difference or it's not really any difference it's just the same work. It's definitely a difference everyone working harder um we noticed our last run like we most of us don't have any years after this so we got to go go bigger go home and we're not trying to go home. Finish big we know what you guys think of Michigan but when you look at what they did they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute right you know what I mean I mean you you were right there something goes a little different you guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that hey you guys want to win a national championship but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year like you're that close. So I'm saying uh we just like work harder
that's that's kind of coach makes uh saying you know nobody cares just work harder like those you know when we played Georgia it's the same thing. Last last play you know they went on the win in 90 so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that you're that close against the last two national titles? Uh of course as you know it's frustrating but you can't change the outcome you can't really do dwell on it you just gotta you know come back and work harder do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older you kind of learn I thought that was working harder than you always find out there's a little more. Yeah definitely I mean that's how that's what growing up is basically in college I thought freshman year I was working as hard as I could but now I look back at it I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now so just to learn anything. 80 85 I mean I can it's all on me I just I think it's a little higher I was just trying to be
funny but I mean it's all on me I just gotta run harder in shape. I think I think I definitely can last I was just you know we got to get the young guys to come along with as we can't play 50 snaps a game that's just too much on our bodies uh just everybody like online D-line we gotta get those younger guys to play you know get that pieces on the D-line and the online and everywhere else so we can last that long run. I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that next time. Oh yeah I did unless we were like winning by like a lot uh I thought like there are no moments you know I can go sit down or something but we're playing them big games like you know Notre Dame 2 or Notre Dame 2 those kind of games of course I want to be because I know I can contribute
and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Taden McDonald is you got a few you guys in a second? Oh yeah definitely K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal y'all you haven't really seen it yet but in practice he shows all the time he's just he's growing right now he has the work I think he just has to get you know in a playbook things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. It's listed you're both listed six three you're three twenty seven he's three twenty six. Yeah I kind of look at him like my junior but you know K-Mac he's going to be a great player he's got to develop more and get into playbook. It's really a lot on you older guys there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in your back is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well. Yeah definitely we got to be leaders um like I say we got to have them play this year we can't just play all the snaps they got to get in there and get some work and we got to get them right during the all season so they can play and not just play they want to like contribute like make plays tackle sex.
Yeah they're definitely some big dudes and they all work hard I'm really seeing much as only a day to when I'm passing on but throughout the workouts they've been working hard you know they're determined and it looks like they're ready to work with me. This feels like there's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defensive tactics you can eat up space but also move you know right that is that is that an important maybe for great defense to have guys like you that have some balls but also a great feeling. I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last uh a couple of nice and much amazing winners uh like see my North they didn't know they got two good uh detacled two athletic detacles look at Georgia two athletic detacles so I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on a big run and beat those big teams. If you think about this if there was defied by the defense attack there's like what's Georgia? Jordan Davis and Janet Carter and let's miss again it's Chris Jenkins.
Couple more questions. We might as well how I mean you understand this was you play it but I feel like some time I don't know are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to? I think so uh I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freaky deep tackles yeah like in the combine just now you see in like those guys they're moving four to four seven eights and things like that so we'll see and when you think it when you think about this freaky stuff about defense attack how do you think you fit into that all of that kind of player you watch that and say yeah that's me yeah definitely I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles but I don't want to you know get a big head but you know I watch the come on I watch the doodoo drills I have tape here you're like you're looking like my film so I think I'm up there with all these guys. Can you become like a artist who comes in bad young passes the figure wags can be cleaned? When you're going to bring practice you're not doing as much a weapon or a weapon. How do you work on that? Do you have like a goal when you're in mind?
I don't remember how much you have like you have going on that's good in mind how many do you want to have? I mean as many as I can have I think I have more than that but I think he said it on the I think they can count some of them and it's some of them where I like just missed it so but I think we work on drills matching the hand I think that's uh goes big and uh what we do is a D line you know just affecting the quarter bag is anywhere you can it's just great for the defense you know just that little thing you cover in his eye you know he might throw it a little bit to the left to our players so it's something that you really really have to work on and that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most you can bring your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen like oh that past really takes a little bit and we don't have that to style it. You're kind of kind of expected for something that you want. I think I just have like a like a eye for the ball kind of I kind of just look at the quarter bag and just I see him like load up I just try to get in his ways and sometimes he's just those are two minutes. I mean they get frustrated by you know we're team you know we're just getting better.
I should lot of a lot of different backs man they just learn to grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs and you got to go right now. I don't really have a top three but I'll give you I'll give you one I would say say Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey auto he was injured this year I like McCaffrey best back in this draft I lead out of the yard that's y'all that's y'all decision playing with Will Howard when I'm going to remember most We're a Howard man he's just such a great lead such a great leader man it's just like in moments where you know usually a lot of players they fold man he was just always calm and relaxed man he just the leader that he was man that's one thing I'm going to remember about him. Yeah he's he's going to be really good man he's um
Coach Luck I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia just that one two punch with them both as well they're going to be really good backs and so James people's man he's smart the way that he goes about his business man he's mature and so man he's growing you know just as a as a person in as a player and so man yeah definitely Ohio State you know that running back room is in great hands. Yeah um coach coach heartline man he's full of energy man and um he's creative as well you know I'm just learning from him as well you know I'm trying to run more outside the backfield was being able to learn from coach heartline and so he's definitely creative at what he's he does and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well and so I think they'll do really good. Just intensity man then since he got the playoffs um every game man it's like the intensity got you know higher and higher and so you know being able I know in the lead it's
it's the same thing even if it's not the playoffs just every every game and intensity it keeps getting higher and higher and so yeah you just I know you got to bring it you know each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State you know I definitely feel like Ohio State they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that you know I just remember even before going through this process I'll talk to a lot of players um before then and they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them you know for the NFL and so yeah. Yeah yeah I know I took a couple days off after the um national championship and then shoot right after that I'm writing right in Tampa Florida and I'm right to it and so um yeah I think while trained I trained at um Yo Merch performance um I think it's called the House of Athlete or the compound now um they did they did a good job man they're just um bringing us in and the the way they went about training us man they were they did a really good job I mean you know what you mean the bucket in the airs you know I haven't
Tampa Tampa nice this is nice it's a nice city man really nice uh the 40 to broad and avert so you've been uh racist and awesome locker these big tier mentality of like when you've got a line back or so you're gonna get a figure that you and you're getting ready just where you're off of it yeah uh yeah no man uh it's really all about technique and then it's about mine said it's well and so um I say you know it's for the love of my brother it's for the love of will highway it's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter just making sure you know um first of all my quarterback doesn't get sacked um and I I told will I think it was before the first game I was like I got your brother it's uh I said man I'm not gonna let you get hit you know um and so I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack I'm not sure that um but I know if I did I haven't given up too many and so man it's for the love of my brother's though man making sure the ball get in their hands you know the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed
in my game uh you can't really work on this you know in all season I feel like it's more so you know you got to put the pads on you got to go through some inside run you know maybe uh it's really just continuing to run through tackles and so that's I feel like that's one of the areas in my game you know I want to continue to get better at I feel like I did a good job of that my senior and so I just want to continue to build on that yes I did yes I did uh I did me with um New Orleans as well um I never got that comparison actually um I know I'm a Camera sure yeah man I would come here great great back man um just what he does and those 101 matchups he's dangerous man and he's so smooth he's so smooth as well I'm not going to be moving like he's smooth yeah um inside zone from stack being able to hit that thing downhill and I'll say the next one it's probably just an option route out of the backfield you know
and man and man coverage you're getting on that linebacker and so yeah I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself man in the way that man um he approaches the game he comes in with the mindset you know he's going to work every single week you know every practice you know he's working hard you know um even shoot I don't know every good I think he had it every game was a good game for him man and so but still man he always has the mentality the mindset that you know he's going to come in each and every day he's going to continue to work and get better man and so he's definitely man he's going to be a special player man he really is man a lot of ups and downs man it's just how you respond to adversity and I feel
like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better is this um not have something to lean on now you know I remember before I met him you know going through those adversity I had nothing to run to you know you can run to people but they still can't it's not too much they can't truly help you you know I feel like you know I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ and so being able to lean on him you know he gives you in those moments where it's tough you know where it's low and um when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about um he gives you he gives you that peace and comfort you know um even in those moments man where it's so hard that you can't you can't explain it's like man I'm going through this but like how am I still filled with this internal joy you know how do I have so much peace in this situation and so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you and so you um man those guys have such a great mentality man I might just really love their mentality
especially um Q as well you know I talked about Will Howard his leadership but Quench John mentality man um that boy just yeah that boy just gifted you know you see you know sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like you know he should have a negative five yards and as soon as you know it you know he that running through somebody step on somebody and shoot it's a game to 10 it's uh shoot I think yeah man I think it's just like he's just gifted man to be honest he's just gifted you know he's he's a big back you know he's strong and so um you know he's he's able to do he's able to do those things and so yeah man it's definitely you know I look at his game and I want to you know at the same time I want to learn from Quench John you know I want to look at this game is like man where where can I get better at as well you know that's the type of player I am I'm always looking to get better man I'm always looking to grow as a player Julian San oh yeah he's gonna be a great but he's gonna be a great quarterback man he's so so accurate and so um he's definitely man I know Coach Dez definitely going to get him right just
you know um continue to grow as a leader continue to grow as a player and so he's going he's gonna be really good for high state uh he's uh I know just the quarterback position um I feel like you know the quarterbacks in the past they've they've definitely been vocal and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to um ask Julian San as well it's to be that vocal leader and lead the um and lead to offensive lead to steam shoot man he has he has a build like JK dobbins and um I kind of see them you know similar similarities in their game as well and I know JK dobbins he was a great running back um I feel like he's not talked about his none um a lot but man his career here you watch his highlights is is great I remember um before I recruit before I committed here I remember watching JK dobbins highlights like every every um one of his years here like four or five times and so man he was such a great back and um I feel like you know um when I see JK dobbins when I see um James people I see similarities to both of their games I feel like they
play the same and so I appreciate you all yeah I'm going
to all I got coming in last year I knew the role so I just attacked every day really the same way it's taking a very rare principally different are you weight wise body wise all that from the year um I think I got a lot bigger I'm like 240 you know like 244 right now last year I played it like 236 to 37 what does it feel like a 244 or well you feel like almost a different machine out there yeah like what does it what does it feel like to be running around out there like you are but with more more back I just feel like I'm like like like like more downhill like stronger like I'm taking all the bloods better it's bigger yeah is it don't think uh maybe that's not the correct term but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year and stuff what do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more
does it got to get ready to just play there any more snaps so are you are you how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8th hand yeah I'm looking forward to it I'm ready for it I'm ready for it I'm ready for it the text is open it's a rematch so it's good but it's not really two different teams compared to the ones that I'm going to play the stuff but how does that enhance this camp for you and this team getting ready for like we're an opener of that magnitude yeah we're an opener like that we've been um we've been emphasizing it a lot we know we got coming so we know we got to do we've been prepared for it I already just probably worked today I think Riley ready to play right now he he advanced freshman like he ended he in the book he stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy like he saw like a saw line to him or like you said you're ready right you know you're ready what was that process like during last season could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready to go wherever the team needed to do yeah because that's pretty much what my role was just whenever I was needed I had to step up so I feel like that's what built me into
me being able to say I'm ready for this year when you say ready is it more a physical thing is a mental thing when I say ready I think it's pretty much like everything physically mentally mostly I think I'm there oh I still one more time oh I feel like it's uh it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year but I kind of go about it the same way like last year I was intentional with everything I did I feel like this year it's gonna be the same thing it's probably a little bit more and what word I say describe like now I say like when you think of me you would think of like like a like a bully like
a silver bullet like I'm really a bully I'm always on the ball that's how I like to play a thing no I ain't got to be my nickname but oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah it's like um think it fit me because I don't know I just like the defense I feel like we got like you say we got a lot of freedom and we're moving around a lot a lot of the terms is like no I don't know I don't really not answer that I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on but it's like I just like it's deep I like I'm pretty deep because I like what you got going on now I wanted to much sad I was kind of like happy for you yeah that's what you want
that's my dog I don't see it kind of missing a little bit but yeah I'm happy for you all right well don't thank you go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys know when you're out how much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your classmates yeah I do feel like um yeah I do feel like I did win an ad-lash but like you say my role wasn't same as how's my beat is here so yeah I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling we'll need to be on the field a lot more place it's great oh bell thank you very much the championship and you can you know be full and everything like that and also need to get your teeth knocked in you know first game and you know you can't have that happening because then you know really doesn't mean anything and so just the constant mindset to continually get better but on the forefront of my mind and forefront of anyone here you can ask
yeah yeah I know we uh we look at the uh class stats every now and then I can be like oh man they're gone they're gone but uh no it's been um it's been good I mean the guys who are still here I'm as I've definitely kind of bonded together pretty good so yeah yeah yeah yeah I mean uh you know Mark came in the other days like that class sweat 21 best class ever and like yeah sure okay you know I can't really can't really even you know just sitting to that you know not much left but um uh yeah I mean to do what we can and do what we can for this team has been really important for all of us and I think um us now realizing we're the veterans you know like we're the old guys now in the group has been um kind of strange at least to begin with you know because you go from um all those guys you like Donnie and Josh and those guys and all of sudden it's Sunday we have a team meeting after the um like the celebration the shoe and all of a sudden the next day there's gone
and you know it's just very different so I think us being able to step up as you know leaders and as as vets to help bring out you know along the team our units and this program has been really important. What are you doing overall two more questions just to try um but then you would you have a small picture for sure Luke said that Jacob did it so far he didn't take it to yeah somebody who went through that would have been impressed by the Jake no it could spend doing really well I mean I could go and he goes to work um he's extremely athletic extremely flexible um you know he's a young kid obviously he's a lot of a lot of development a lot he's a little adversity at all of us do um and I think he's going through that right now but he's been um coming out on the better end of it so far and um excited to see what he can do because he's very impressive at this young stage. So I steer overall level of excitement just to be back with the rest of this interior off the blind room with you guys having something just here to back
yeah extremely excited I mean um trying to just build that culture back up again you know like what we had last year uh I we're trying to do a little stuff here and there and I can know I think we're going to Ray-Rays barbecue I think tomorrow so shout out Ray-Rays but uh um but yeah I just trying to get that brotherhood back get that you know that oblock spirit back uh sure it's coming soon soon um hopefully um but uh just to kind of get those uh not those same faces but those same kind of mindsets back and our our group is important right now and it's it's been fun to meet new guys from different backgrounds and stuff like that um and try to figure out how to you know build that and mend that together it's been pretty cool now as you are one of the most experienced veterans on this team how much do you feel like you have to be a leader for the students here yeah for sure I mean I think that comes um it's obviously I don't feel like it's natural to anyone to immediately step up and that's something I've been working on every day and talking to God about um but I obviously understand that and that's something I want to continue
to work on I want to be able to um be a guy that people can fall back on and like Coach is saying before like we're gonna have highs in those but the great players the ones we can set our clocks to and I kind of want that's my goal is to be one of those people that you can do that um and I think for especially a very new set of eyes um in the woody um not only coaches but players um I think it's very important to kind of keep that steady um mindset and I think for me learning how to be a leader has been important just to not be too hard on myself but also not let myself kind of slack off in some departments is trying to keep um steady just your story itself though is testament of what it means to like for perseverance and stuff too though right car some mean you know that's sort of have to stand up from somebody to say that right I mean just yeah what do you what do you think you've shown more than anything else in every guard yeah I mean I've been blessed you know I've you know I've been blessed with a lot of adversity I think that's definitely maybe better on the back end and um you know coach to coach day always talks about it
and you don't you know great leaders aren't you know they can show it but you know a lot of people can show a lot a lot of people can just talk about it um but to be about it is important and I think to be not I've went through a lot of that adversity I went through a lot of that stuff and um my testament you know has been um written in an interesting way but I think for me to take that next step is really important for not only for this team but for myself personally yeah uh he's been doing great I mean he came in um big freaking strong uh he's fun to be in the weight room with uh he's uh he's kind of quiet like that's kind of my first impression on but he's actually pretty funny dude he he and his dad come over in the kind of joke around and so he he's been doing a great job all right he's been a great job um for his size he is like freaky athletic feet like I watched him do the ladders and I was a lot of massive around on those things you know doing a little itch shuffle but I mean he he's he was killing it and so he's been doing a great job I can't wait to see um how he kind of continues to develop
throughout this summer and uh throughout this fall camp yeah piggy has been doing great I mean he uh he stepped up piggy yeah yeah everyone refers to his piggy is his username one time nice everyone's speed anyway um you know pig's been doing great he uh he's been able to step up and kind of bring around on those younger guys um you know everyone's kind of trying to figure out their their new roles and I think he's been uh he's been doing a lot of things big body guy that he catched by a can run between the tacos um his feet are quick and once you think for a big guy that really good feet we get balanced so that's what makes me good that's what I saw him right now I see it's probably a good way coming running backs in the tight end back now uh well tight end back ground now I don't know many with that type of back ground but when he's high school we see that they try to play as an H-Bat well really good for him
when you look in the portal for you know running back so we want to try to make your running back does it matter to you if you have two different styles of running backs maybe one guy can do certain things better one guy can do something so there is it you know you'll just say the best running back you can find you know I want to have different styles yeah I want different styles you know try to take the same thing you know take the same thing you know take guys with different skills uh whether they're big guys small guys past catchers in between the type of runners I don't know you know I don't want to take the same thing you know different different different types of backs you guys have built a new impression a lot of them are a slower red zone story for you guys actually is it important to find the back of the match the size leapsy j-hast up and down in the most of the game? um no I have my own opinion on the size they've been becoming the brands I know I had Jordan James out of order and I he's my brand zone uh running show y'all is a freshman and probably waiting two ten twelve five which is not very big but they ain't got the energy with them and some guys you got to know so sticking about his own
and you play with a lot of aggression down here running so that could be CJ that could be James or it could be the freshman go Jackson you know it's just who it has a nose for giving his own that's that's what I'm going to do now just because you're being there don't make a talk we knew we had obviously you know freshman running back from it and the boat is there here but what do you need to see from a freshman to feel comfortable with that playing so in the first day we were there on the ball well it would they do they know small detail but take care of the ball the second game will be how good they know pass ball because it's the hardest thing five school backs because they're not really here in high school but you have to understand the past but by all their falls on who so like they say I'm here so but that's why I need to see first everything Jackson I will come to speak to you so I can go get in there do you feel comfortable with with bow and then I say where they're at or at least you know where
their time is at there yeah I think they're gonna be fine I can say I tell all the young guys he's a marathon that was fun the first day the first you've been to arm a spot on a specialty know your own spot specialty then you you earn the right to be a buck out I'll be so they'll get that down the field so I think they're turning the right towards you first practice like it wasn't there it's time to build off for him I can't stop the work on you yeah I've just seen some of the younger guys in your room develop I think about like Edgar Custon just coming in this year seeing him working with you guys Joshua Mekin's house he's coming home I feel like they're definitely picking up quick I mean I was in their shoes one time and I had Zach Harrison and Javonte and Tyler Friedell in front of me so I feel like I'm trying to be kind of one of those peers that they were for me and kind of just giving them the steps to get there and I feel like they're definitely picking up quick and
no they definitely need to be one of the great Russian so we got Joshua Salk about it JT and Jack probably need a ton of their experience seeing that some of the opportunities for me have been a lot of different to the work really good you've been getting a new half of camp pretty much the last couple I feel like all the camps I've definitely gotten a big course learned and I love that side I asked Coach J4 I love getting more reps because I just like protecting my craft so I mean some people may not need it some other people needed but I mean I just like to give me reps like I mean for me it's always just kind of getting my little details perfectly like my steps my footing kind of just affecting my toolbox is what we call it my craft and trying to be like a whenever you play some kind of different yeah um definitely just getting stronger faster everything all the above but uh one of my big
things is being leader and kind of just not trying to look still look up to Jack and JT and kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into so I feel like kind of have a lot of leaders on the D-line at the D-In position so we kind of all kind of just counsel off the channel. There's been a tough challenge for you to go through all the uptiles guys um we're competitive and we love it we all competitive people we all love to fish each other and that's really the best set of all we feel like we all just kind of bouncing off each other and see what one person does and we kind of build it into our toolbox and we all kind of just kind of build one great thing. You are going to last year and you've got to get the shot of uh with full backing work and uh they approach you with that idea and two coach's film I have to get to come up out because you're just uh checks all your sloppy. Okay. So I definitely did it in high school I was pulled back in a little bit of tidying so I feel like it kind of saw what I
could do there in Coach Wilson honestly he loved watching it too before he left and uh he felt like he planned that seat and coach day's head and uh coach day kind of just went for it and uh tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that considering now? I mean I'm just gonna do anything in the screen. New playbook I did not know yet. Yeah we've got that far. But yeah we have been people and how tough was that to do that? Yeah look at that. Um I like to think myself as a football player I can really play any position on the field you need me to just give me a week or two to learn it and kind of perfect it and uh try to do my best for you. Kid Jack need the same thing. Oh yeah. Graphically that's why. Kid was talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and he sort of saw you and got out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just got to win into those from your perspective and how did that help you maybe get the like mindset I guess when I need this for. Um definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like uh people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it how long the season is now. What you got to do to prepare for and what
happened in all that time from here to to then. So uh I feel like we definitely just coached getting me kind of connected and we kind of just talks man oh man and uh he kind of just sent it straight to me and I feel like you kind of both are pretty honest and we know we're making it yada. Making each other better every day and we got the four best DNs, five best DNs honestly in the college football and we're gonna be one of the best DLines in college football. How do you feel like a better player today than you were again this season? I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles uh just being responsible and being more of a leader and uh kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and uh feel like we're kind of helping out more. How do you record your head around the class at the same time as the TDC? Is it sound? I mean it sounds bizarre but I mean the season goes by so fast already so when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow it's already week 10 so now it's kind of gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it because I'm already here for you to feel like I'm a freshman
school and a college grader. But you don't want to spend all your time in the first uh first month of the year right? Oh yeah. There is a mindset that I didn't have the season. Yeah definitely definitely gonna have the mental stability to handle all those weeks all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys around the year? Last question right here. He doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We see it in every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become so we know we we're right at the same at the right place at the right time and God wanted us to be here and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and uh just perfect our craft together and I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together at something special. Great. How did your expectations like this meet up with how do you feel you put it up to this point of guess? I feel like I've made the plays that came to me and that's really awesome. I can control. I've had more opportunities as years progressed and
been in spots to be around the ball. But the expectation was to come here and contribute to the team and try to help find a way to push the team to win games and I level and to be better than they were latching for me to play better than I was latching. So really just coming to try to grow with myself and with the team. So that was my big goal and I feel like I've done a good job and the team has done a good job progressing through the year and getting better. So yeah that's all I can say about that. Okay, the right pretend to be a lot of mineral. Yeah, I feel to stand here right now. Does it feel like like a different season? What does it feel like for you going into the playoffs? You know, you'll get the goal you wanted necessarily to make your season but here you are, right? I mean, what is that sense that you have right now that's different make about the rigging season? I mean everybody wants to say it's a new season in terms of because it is. Everybody's 1-0 and 0 right now. When you keep going, if you lose your
done. So I mean, but genuinely that's how you play every game. You know, they play every game like it's your last game. So for me, I don't think it's really any difference. You have to go play at a high level every game that can't be based at home. You know, go play every game like it's the same thing. So I would say in terms of that. No, you just have to play the game. Play the game is there. What feels different about this defense right now going into this? You know, you'll feel even more work. You know, done by tight and we close together. What was that? I mean, what is your sense of the further it's so to speak of the defense? I feel like we progressed throughout the season. We didn't make a team chapter game six because we lost and we didn't play well again and I feel like we've grown from that and got into a better place and over these past two weeks off just realizing, okay, these are the things that we messed up throughout the year. These are what we need to fix. These are
what this team is trying to exploit on us. So just really going back through everything, seeing what can do better for this kind of game or for the next couple of years. Let's go for questions. Tony, you hurt me, fuck out. How does the Tennessee's wire splits with their receivers? In fact, you, as a Thunder. I feel like it makes the game more or more one game. It makes your receivers and your DBs at the place at the game than the guys up front. And it makes it, truthfully, like those guys have to do their job and these guys have to do your job. You got to be able to stop the run with the people you have and the run fit and you have to be able to stop the pass with the people you have out there. So that's what they do and they do it at a really level. So it's going to be tough to go in.
It allows you to get your clean senator. Earlier just a ability to see the formation and see what keys you have before the play and have knowledge of your job and not really thinking. Being able to play and not think during the games is a really big thing. So whenever you can get the call out faster and play a high level and play without thought, that's a really good thing for you team. Appreciate you. So I definitely did it in high school. I was pulled back and a little bit tired and so I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson. Honestly, he left Washington too, the poor he left and he felt like he playing that seed in Coach Day's head and Coach Day kind of just went for it and tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that the chin ring now? Do anything in the spring? New play, but I did not know you hadn't got that far. I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field.
You need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and try to do my best for you. Kid Jack, do the same thing. Oh yeah. Graphically, that's what... Ken is talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of side you and you've got to out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just want to get a win into those, we respect him and how did that help you maybe get the right mindset I guess we need to do this for him. Definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it how long the season is now, what you got to do to prepare for and what could happen in all that time from here to then. So I feel like we definitely just Coach Day and me kind of connected and we kind of just talks man-on-man and he kind of just sent straight to me and I feel like we kind of both are pretty honest. We're making it together. We're making each other better every day and we got the 4 best Dn's, 5 best Dn's honestly. Coach football and we're going to be one of the best Dn's and coach football. How do you feel about it today at any more against the season?
Well, I feel like I'm taking big steps in my rules of just being responsible and being more of a leader and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. I ain't record anywhere in the past since the TKFC. Is it sound? I mean, it sounds bizarre but I mean the season goes by so fast already so when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow it's already week 10 so now it's kind of getting more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it because I'm already in your career feeling. I feel like I'm fresh and still feeling straight. But you don't want to spend all your time in the first month or a year right? Oh yeah. There is a mindset in the season. Yeah definitely definitely going to have to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much is Larry talking about you guys? Last question right here. The 2016 2017 4 and the 5200 all in the same location. How much does he talk about that? I mean he doesn't have to talk about it.
We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know what we could become. So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time and God wanted us to be here and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together with something special. You get like good coaches who believe in you and like they give you the tools to go out there and just play with confidence. You know that they're doubting those stuff. Like you got your teammates who got your back. Like my first play when I got a third Tennessee like when DeZel, IGB and Japan. Like first thing they say is like no where you just go out there and play with confidence. You know the tools, it's usual tools. It's just go out there and make a play. And we're about to play coming to you. You know where there's no time to show a job. You just do it and then like say what goes wrong. Like he gives me, he puts me in a position like like the drills we put in, the work we put in, the one-on-one, so just go out there and just perform at the highest level. How much better are you right now than maybe last month before spring practice? I mean I got way better just because I've transitioned a little bit to the inside.
Nick was far so I'm like now I actually just like catch, catch, take me. And it's been often preversed not as not always press at the line. So it's like not maybe to like move my feet, move my hands. Like see like what I got to do just like just in case I got to go back in the corner. I can I'll plan off now. I'm very confident out there. Do you think that Nick was a natural fit for you or have you had the kind of convinced yourself to transition around? I mean I feel like it's natural for me because I feel like me, individually I'm a fast learner. A fast learner like coaches help us like learn fast and like because they're always honest about the techniques and stuff. So you like you write down like pick up all the things you did. Like when we get out here they coaches do like to take me so we used to go out there and play like fast spot and it would like like reverse until you were able to go out there and just compete. Is that where you kind of stuff just spring or do you get kind of mountain? So I've really been stuck there this spring a little bit right whenever you get us like other things. I just bounce out there every once in a while just like have just have fun. See if I still got it every once in a while so it's as good as go out there to compete at most spots.
You mentioned the technique what technique you know tips and things that you had to pick up and learn from what you're from. I mean this is always like you are because what coaches ask you hands like see it you see it move your feet and then get your hands on the man so it's like when you get like when you out there you able to like process like the way the receiver comes off the ball looking at the hips and seeing like the way he moving so you're able to pick up like the row concepts you can get out of that like so it's being like under coach walls for me like as a player and just like him breaking out football to you like one on one side very beneficial. I really say like the corner you got to cover two you cover three you get to cover one us like it's easy but then you got nickel there are so many responsibilities you gotta see like the row concepts you gotta be able to process like dying those rows faster than what you gotta do at corner and just be able to like everything's quick like you're transitioning you gotta like you gotta move fast you gotta learn to move fast it's like game recognition
great you think maybe from the most since you got it you got it. I'll definitely say I'll definitely say yes because how you get to like college it's a little bit different high school we don't got to worry about things like that when I want you get to like college and school like this like your recognition of plays and like you know your jobs the way like the coverage is supposed to be played understand all your teammates or pluses you have what you feel it's like it gets easy. What if you're proud of the band? It's very talented. He's a great dude he's a humble guy a great teammate very supportive it's like a guy that you don't want to wrong because you like you can feed off your energy because you can see like we make a play he's like he like IGB it's like IGB 2.0 so he's like maybe after what guys like that with good energy it's made you play a little bit harder and then like when you make a play it's out there and I'm just helping you like it's being out there with him he's a good player. One of those guys questions and four kids come to Ohio State obviously in the last few years you just help me see your parents now what is it about one bill that gets you
to play at Ohio State? It's a big question I know. Let me just start some questions because we have so many kids come out of the blue and just play at leagues like league schools and they like like tracks a big part of it because I mean like actually everybody got to run a track like it's mandatory you don't really get a choice. You able to just like get out here and like know how to compete and then like G like game builds that mental toughness into you so like have you like if you're down you got to be mentally tough because I'm not alive. My whole life's not going to be easy so it's like being out here you know we could pee when you down just pick yourself back up I mean that's a being it's done for me that's a being that's a good one. Did you how would you describe the mentality of the defense right now being this opportunity for a great half the world in? Yeah hungry and thankful I mean we know how the last last time when you know we had a chip on our shoulder I mean we were right in high before that game and we took that loss and we came back how to make a couple changes but I think we understand what you know everything's
that stick right now you know just fighting to where another house they jersey for next game that's what's on stake and just to be able to represent this this this state and this this team I mean we understand what's what's on the line and you know we're just hungry and blessed that we get this opportunity playing the Rose Bowl. Right behind your Adam King WBNS what do you remember most about walking off the field in Eugene? What was kind of going to see your eyes in that moment? I mean there is a I don't think anybody imagined it imagine a solution you know I didn't that's for sure and I think after that it was a kind of head deep understanding that man we still there's still a lot of ball left to be played I mean you can let it sting for a little bit but you know if you let it carry over too long then you know there there goes there goes your whole season by I think we did a great job of just understanding coming together in this room right here not being afraid to display or hold accountability from one another and you know as as that happened
we came back we grouped and you know we're just you're just going right now and I'm just blessed for those specific moments you know losing I mean no one wants to lose but the testimonies and the things you're taught within those little situations speaks of all of you. After all right Vladimir D'Rome. Jay what did you see from King WBNS the last couple of weeks that was there like a push from him and then there was an operation to put him and we can see like he's playing some special warm things in. Yeah I mean that's that's my boy he's in the R2X club too but you know Kiata I mean every time his numbers call he goes out there and makes the most of it no matter where where we are in the game when he goes out there he's just hungry he wants to go make plays and you know we see it in practice so it's not surprising to us. Bill Rebino, it's fun this is back. Don't give us obviously very elusive in our talent and he's not very tall. How important it could be to just kind of stay in your past rush lanes and neglect a lot of balls
and kind of make a difference that way? Yeah I think it just comes out being disciplined no one who you're playing against like you said then he's a he sure but he's very elusive I mean he can he is making throws I mean he get out the puck he can do everything so I think for us we just have to discipline and just continue to just meet with Coach Jay me with the coach knows and understand how we can just eliminate that. Your personality seems to be a little different you're more on the quiet side he's how well you've played together four years both five store guys kind of describe your relationship with him friendship with him and just kind of how you cop with each other. Man that's my brother like he said we're different but very alike I think outside like you said he's louder I'm quiet but you know once we're on that field we're like the same person we'll do anything for this team you know we'll die for our players and we'll give everything we got. Room together for four years correct? Yeah fall camp yeah sometimes go over there so go over there.
We have our share of days when we when I'm neat he's neat or you know we might both be messy but we do a good job yeah I'd probably say I'm a better coach Jack though. Tony Gertman like I held. When you're playing a team for the second time and that was almost a season to go by now. How much of are you at square one with with the scouting and preparation or how much do you take from that game how much do you avoid taking so that you don't have any preconceived notions of what you're going up against on the offensive line. I say it's pretty 50-50 I mean that game like you said it was a while ago but at the same time they elevated as a team so did we so we understand that they they had they made some changes for sure you know there's there's a certain density we can take back from that game but we also understand that they went on a little run after that and we can see that they elevated as offense so we just got to continue to watch those games dissect the other games and just continue to see what stands out and what they change from the for the past game. We got a couple calls on zoom that will wrap up
with first we have Nick Hamilton from nightcast media Nick. I just wanted to ask you basically about the synergy of this defense and how you guys were able to not only celebrate the triumphs but get through the adversity be able to be this top notch defense that you are in college football today. Here you have the question one more time yeah no problem. I wanted to ask you about the synergy you are we're able to develop over course of the season obviously celebrating the triumphs but also getting through the adversities to where you go all all the top notch defense that you all are today. Yeah I mean like you said that we went through a lot of trials to trials but there's also there's a lot of things we can take away from all the wins and losses and from those those wins we understood that hey we can be the best defensive country and from those losses we understand that there's still things that need to be fixed and I think when you take all that in at once that comes down to the the comical or the comment talk which is
you can there's always learning points everywhere and depending how we dissect those games or how we just continue to come as one and elevate you know we continue to just collect all those those learning points and just continue to grow from them. And one final question Joey Coffin Columbus dispatch Joey. JT what have you guys done better and the first in the Tennessee game and just lateness season you think about turning some of the the pressures that you've got on the quarterbacks and the sacks and getting at home in some of those situations. Yeah I think it was more just understanding the defense as a whole understanding everybody's job. I think as the season went on we got to understand that you know we have to know what's going on the back can we have to know what's going on the lineback recruit to understand what plays we have room of freedom and I think once we understood that and got a better understanding of the of everybody's job. I mean it it showed this play because you know everybody knows what each other's doing it's not like the lineback's know what they're doing
the corners and be I they know only their job I think we all know each other's job and we continue ask each other questions on you know if they're listening how they can get to the quarterback and you know if I'm dropping and playing quarterbacks by I can ask Cody on how to open field tackle. So you know we just we just kind of lean on each other's understanding because you know like I said that's how it knows how to play corner better than I know how to play corner so you know he has more more wisdom at that position than I do. JT thank you very much. Thank you. I'm definitely a little bit of both um obviously I just wanted the team to win I think we got a chance to win no definitely towards it and to stretch that last drive. I was a couple plays here a couple calls that he maybe should have gotten but um I think the frustration more so it just comes from no wanting to win or anything. What did you say he was a little surprised so much attention you got right away from your defense how about you? Yeah definitely we maybe killed him or one of ones kind of how the game playing with set up um getting about different covers
out of cloud to my side and I just kind of had the game goes. What's the process been? Sometimes where whatever reason just just see that. Yeah definitely um especially in college a lot of the game fans defensively were to take me away um you know we had a lot of success at a high state obviously one of the boys having different um the weapons they're kind of still get the victories and um obviously I continue to do better jobs when I hear. Why are the communication the process been like post game getting on the same page with Kyler just you guys exchange text or you guys getting the film? Yeah film definitely um kind of asking what did I see there kind of go over and play and um I just kind of give him what I saw and kind of different feedback to exchange words. Mark I get it we're asking questions about the previous game bar are you the type of guy to let a game like that winger or how do you flush it? You got to move on got to move on some long season guy what 16 more of them hopefully no I can stay healthy throughout the year and uh just continue to build
and get better each week. You guys did so much work throughout the office season to get on the same page how different is it when you get into that regular season? Yeah it's totally different it's totally different um you can do a lot of things you know in shirts and shorts and then once you go out there put practice and get pads on you do like the joint practice we did with the colds but there's nothing like actually going out there um not in live action and really trying to be on the same game so I think that relationship will continue to develop and we'll get better. Did it just a matter of reps then this month? Yeah definitely definitely um like I said I was kind of my first live action together um so I can continue with when you're early impressions are you on the field together and in the preseason with cows? Uh yeah but now obviously I have a death respect you know JG's call or preseason and obviously be also really healthy that's kind of best the most important thing that obviously that's all healthy even going forward so that's it I can say. Marvin what are your early impressions of the Rams? what do you think of the Rams? Yeah I mean they're a good team they're a good physical team I got a new lot of new guys up front I think that's kind of where their strong suit is um kind of
a little different to Buffalo come more of a little match coverage so I'm excited to build this one. Personally when the bells did give you one of my opportunities how do you feel today? Wasn't many of them. Oh wasn't many of them so uh Bethlehem did you? I'm just where you think game versus just playing you know not getting a preseason game actually. I think it was pretty easy. There's definitely definitely thinking a lot out there and um you know I think I'll come with reps. I think to think and less and just going out there and playing definitely come with reps and it's something you know I'll get better at but um I think definitely I was thinking a lot out there. Is there anything you can do to improve that that's for all coverage? Anything you can do to improve the past because you're you're going to face that a lot on all of this. Yeah I mean you just got to team you get open for yourself making yourself available on to when the ball does get away making the play um this he's just taking you away that means other guys are having a chance to get open so that's how kind of how I look at it. It's no longer since you know offense. That's the best thing of course. That continuity with Tyler. This is something that comes pretty quickly in a new game or something like that. Hopefully sooner or later
I think um I'll continue to see we'll see. I don't think we're in a bad place right now at all. Obviously I don't really think that but uh just a live reps we'll continue to grow and show the thing and how I believe maybe different than somebody else maybe you know like to practice at least like to be positivity you know I mean so but he the energy had would be on just though hyper the beyond so I think so that's kind of how I want to be going on um really my whole life I want to get I felt team captain like specifically and I felt I wasn't captain in high school wasn't a captain in college but I want to make a joke because in high school I feel like I'm not going to be a captain like he's that I felt yeah um but that would be awesome you know but you know that happens I'd be great but not either way I want to assume a role as a captain from perspective the guys onto a visual word and get back to that point. Yeah I mean I can't say that um
I mean I guess the biggest thing is that I felt like how you used to in the past but it didn't take just the first LTAs it took training left and right once this season because I know what it was going to be shared so it's like a lot of reps just to get back to feeling like myself for day one LTAs and then that whole first week but now like today specifically just changing some small things with my feet that is it talking about the long coach about some things I'm doing my feet to get to that to sell my nutritional angle that I love to sit on I thought I felt I thought I felt great already but okay I felt even better so I need more excites tomorrow now I'm getting my feet back and how I like the right side and on the left side so I'm excited I mean obviously I feel like in the league whether I left the right you're still going against premier guys obviously you have high expectations for the left angle I'm tackled but um there's definitely like
the level of energy and like the expectation definitely taking the human side because now can I get blind side that's the as the tackle wall you know so um so yeah I would say in terms of communication as far as this even outside of the facility you just stuff like that like really creating that the tackle quarterback bond even more off the field I think has been something that's even the cool I got the text one day as I had you put it up I was like you know yeah I've been training both I've been training both you know I I asked after the season they're like honestly you know we'll talk to you some free season and I just got the text on I have this with the free agency then so I was like you know what I had a O-season right tackle so if I get the word I'm going I'm standing right tackle I'll just do what I did before I'm built on that but I was like I might as well as train the left tackle now as if we're going to be left tackle and I'd rather do that than train on right
time with the call A and do the left tackle I was like I'm switching my feet you know what I mean so I'm like I'm just preparing to advance I was like it was God you know I think occasionally I'm third down there be a lot of twists I was just not like it's automatic and I think that was my mindset for like the first half of the season like I didn't have to go into game with some pros like oh my gosh they did that I tried to figure out okay like this is this is the type of rush man again this is how this guy usually rushes if I get the vibe this is how the ends like the rush you know tackles that are first year guys you got the premier patch on already you know what it was going to be already you know every stud and honestly just knowing that's kind of an advantage to so you're not you're not you're not oh the problems with my side it was never aeratomic but it come out the hot like three plays in a row two minutes I do that you know what I mean I'm watching more everybody else and he rarely really goes out there occasionally third down I was like
he's gonna pick me you know what I mean so effect it's kind it's also kind of an engine away but it's also exciting okay I'm gonna get the hardest to look you know those are real real reps you know the day so really out on our way to kind of process and I was like hey when I tell me let me know about I'm just gonna train it I was training all left so TAs I guess if I didn't hear anything about TAs I came in like so you know what I mean because just like I'm cool with training both continue I would have been cool training both continually but I feel like anybody any position will feel like okay like you want as soon as possible give your feet kind of settle there your hips settle there your hands settle there and I'm starting to have that we've been hardly a good work bowl very good to you no but they're definitely but in terms of the development it's definitely a lot faster to stay on all one side but I think having that the
weeks that we had the transitional seasons over you know it would go trying to get up put up on the ground and weak things out of town right now but when it comes back I'm gonna show them the house I've got a house not too far from so I told them I got that house like I could yell outside having you stalk or anything doesn't mean anything so we're we have to play on Friday and that's really all that matters we're gonna take two more from zoom before turning it back our first one is gonna come from Stephen from Cleveland dot com go ahead the final sorry hey Caleb we've seen you were talking about the Ohio State Office the success that they've had obviously Jeremiah has been a big part of that what's it been like this year going against him in practice and you know after doing that there's a surprise at all to see him having a success he's had as a freshman
no it doesn't bring surprises it was pretty pretty easy to see the talent that he has and the blessings that God has put on his plate but it's always a it's always a challenge going against Jeremiah and the other receivers and Mecca and Carnival practice and even guys like Brandon and his impression Rogers they they do a great job bringing looks for the defense and create a lot of obstacles a final question from zoom is gonna come from Dan Hope go ahead Dan Caleb you Quinn had a lot of success against you guys when you played him at Alabama last year just what do you remember from going up against him last year and what can you learn from that game really smart quarterback knows how to operate their offense uh... possible in the right places and then coach Narkeeson does a great job putting him in positions to win all right back to you yep thank you Rob all our Columbus dispatch Caleb uh JT and Jack land opposite sides and they is opposite off the field as they are on in terms of personality and just the people they are
they're offices but they uh they're also like one of the closest people I know they've spent a lot of time together um they've come from different sides of the country so they're different people for sure but they're both really great people are really great men sorry I respect both of them um I'm not gonna do that I'm sorry I'm not gonna do that it's about to ask the war and podcast throughout the throughout the season we would always see you on like Wednesday nights you and Nathan would be some of the last people off the field for the things that you're working on after a practice always the same is it a routine what are the things that you're hoping to get out of those extra moments after practice uh some routine pretty much the the keys that we need to go into the game with and then also changes week to week on based on what our jobs are gonna put us into doing um so every week we go
through the same things and then we add certain things that we do for the week for the what the team that we play is gonna ask us a comment Bill we've been on Columbus dispatch yeah I already got one okay uh Joey Gothman Columbus dispatch killin when takes us uses play action and they use play action a period of what's what do they do well and those spots and what's the key for you guys in those moments with Quinn they uh they do a really good job with eye candy um and it creates a lot of challenges for defense in order to see if it's runner path and see um because that's when they're gonna take their shots too as well so really just having great eye discipline seeing the line is seeing what it's telling us um so that's just what it does uh deep right uh Nick Walker Letterman role hey you guys had a pretty good game plan for Tyler Warren when you guys played him you guys have another Texas has a good tight in and Gunnar Kahn what do you guys gonna have to do to limit him and how to what do you think about his game uh he's a really good player he makes a lot of plays and he's has a lot of receiving yards
this year um so really just do the same thing we've done all year just be disciplined in our responsibilities and if you're on them you gotta make a play when it comes right one of the man you're dealing with uh playman doc how when you let your receivers just kind of a hole you know they spread ball around seems like a lot of what stands out about you know the way that they can spread the ball around with the guys a lot of really good athletes um I play with Isaiah Bond Lasser who's a really great receiver a lot of speed um and then all the receivers have made a lot of plays so I mean everybody has to be on their peasy cues if we're gonna stop them and uh have it do a really good job uh front row here 10 May Letterman role yeah kill but you moved up here and I don't have to get to you when you move it basically a year ago and stuff it was a little bit of a leap of faith because you know you know how many athletes are on this team and get athletes to stuff but when did you really feel this defense come into its own and then then pass that man
watching in Rose Bowl you you recognition of what was coming seem to be on point did it feel like that I mean you personally um I think the defenses played really well throughout the season uh I think we've had games where we played better and games where we haven't put it all together but I think that's how all defenses are um so I can't say there's a certain moment where I think we put it together um but was it second part of your question you seem really on point uh against Oregon about recognizing what was what was coming I mean you were really active out there directing and things like that did it feel like that I guess uh I feel like as Luke said earlier the preparation that we put in goes into that and just feeling comfortable and what we're doing comfortable and what we're seeing with the other teams I feel like that's uh that allows us to play fast and come uh me and Laketon to communicate to everybody else do I miss anyone for questions here Steve how long in front of you in sports yeah Caleb but you came to high state to play for
national championship and there were a lot of ups and downs throughout the season just to be in this position the last four teams still alive just you feel validated by that and did you always have faith that this is how it was going to turn out I came to high state to become a better player and to help the team be as good as it can be not to win a national championship not like that wasn't the only goal for me coming here uh really just wanted to be in the team and be my be with the brotherhood um but it's a it's a great feeling being in the final four and being with the team and everything that comes with that but it's a blessing to be here and one final question Boomer Ben once club is this bad yeah I did a lot of follow up when I talked to you at that time of the game you said when they scored their first and second touchdown you were really hot on the sidelines what was what was your message to the team and you know that's a good off that they're going to score against most people why were you so hot really just because we didn't execute which let them score so we've done that a lot which is something we can't do in these big games and these games where
it's winter go home so we got to make the plays when they come and you got our competitive excellence as coach Dases make the play where your numbers call I feel like they're definitely picking up quick I mean I was in their shoes one time and I had Zach Harrison Javonte and Tyler Friedel in front of me so I was trying to be kind of one of those peers that they were for me and kind of just giving them the steps to get there and I feel like they're definitely picking up quick and they're definitely going to be one of the great rushmen so so we got to start about it the last couple um I feel like all the camps I've definitely got a big course learned and I love that so I asked coach Jay for I love getting more reps because I just like affecting my craft so I mean Some people may not need it, some people need it, but I mean, I'm just like, you guys may represent something like that. What do you think about that course that I would like to have?
I mean, for me, it's always just kind of getting my little details perfectly, like my steps, my footing, kind of just perfecting my toolbox, what we call it, my craft, and just trying to be a like, whenever, every place we try to do. Yeah, definitely just getting stronger faster, everything all the above, but one of my big things being a leader, and kind of just not trying to look, still look up to Jack and JT, and kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into, so I feel like we kind of have a lot of leaders on the B line, and we have to be in position, so we kind of all kind of just kind of talk to each other, kind of host. Is that been a tough time for you to be able to help us, and I'm talking to you guys playing with the role of you, and you're on the field, and just kind of trying to help us, and try to help us be like, so you need this big guys, how does that transition into? Um, it's really competitive, and we love it. We all competitive people, we all live with the fish together, and I feel like we're bringing the best side of all of this.
I feel like we're all just kind of bouncing off each other and seeing what one person does, and kind of building into our actual box, and we all kind of build one great thing. Hey, do you ever roll last year, and you got to get the shot of the full back in the club, and did they approach you without adhering to a coach's day on my habit of getting to come about, because you're a good jack sawyer, it's not me. Okay. It gets a test day. Um, so I definitely did it in high school, I was full back, and a little bit tired, and so I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there, and Coach Wilson, honestly, he left watching it too, before he left, and I feel like he planned that seed in Coach Day's head, and Coach Day kind of just went for it, and I tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that the genuine now, man? Do you have anything in the screen? New playbook, I did not know you, and got that far. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. How tough is that? Yeah, look at that. Um, I like to think myself as a football player, I can really play any position on the field, and you need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it, and kind of perfect it, and I'll try to do my best for you.
I can't check you the same thing. Oh yeah. And what about football? We're athletes, that's why. Kids is talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations, some of the sort of saw you and got out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just got to win into those, perspective, and how do that help you move in good, the light mindset I guess, when you need this playbook. Um, definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened, and they don't know everything that goes into it, and how long the season is now, what you got to do to prepare for, and what could happen in all that time, from here to then. So, I feel like we definitely just coached in, we kind of connected, and we kind of just talked, and man-o-man, and he kind of just sent straight to me, and I feel like we kind of both had a good time. Rest, rest, and we know we're making it. We're making each other better every day, and we got the four best D-ins, five best D-ins, honestly, and then college football, and we're going to be one of the best D-lines in college football. How do you feel like a better player today at any work in this season? Well, I feel like I'm taking big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader,
and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team, and kind of bring people in, and I feel like we kind of helping out more. I ain't record a hit around the past, so the TKFC, and it's a good thing. I mean, it sounds bizarre, but I mean, the season goes by so fast already, so when you're kind of like week 10, and you're like, wow, it's already week 10, so now it's kind of, it keeps you more time to kind of enjoy it, and kind of savor it, because I'm already here for you, so I'm freshness for you, so please praise me. But you don't want to spit on your powder for the first month of the year, right? I mean, there is that pace yourself, but I mean, there's a light set that I did in that season. Yeah, definitely, definitely going to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks, and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys around the game? Last question right here. Can you succeed 2017? Four NFL D-French and Orange All in Australia? How much does he talk to that? I mean, he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become, so we know we're at the same, we're at the right place at the right time,
and God wanted us to be here, and we knew we wanted us all to come together, and kind of play together, and be able to bounce off, and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals, and we come together at something special. Doing it? What are the deliberations? I'm surprised it's even a conversation. It should always be live. Let's tell you. Tell you play football. Obviously, there's a proximity to the season, which is a little reckless, I understand that. But in spring, when you're competing for jobs, I mean, if I'm a quarterback, I'm messing with you live, so I can show him how I'm different than anyone that can't be live. You know what I mean? They're always trying to find an edge, and if you're never fully alive, I don't think you fully give a guy's opportunity to be who they want to be, or who they can be. So that being said, I will cast my vote, but that will not be my final decision on that, but I will cast my vote. I think I can handle it well. It was good for all parties involved, and more we can do that, the better,
but I'm sure that is coming to a close here very quickly. Can we have a 20% of our... Right. General Maya off the field, we saw after practice on the Saturday, the mob that came to get autographs and things. When you're working with him on all these things you're talking about, but also dealing with the life of being one of the biggest names in college football, how do you help mentor him in that aspect? Yeah, I mean, it's a blessing to be in a position where you know, can provide insight or I wouldn't say recommendations, but just give perspective. How he chooses to receive a perspective or not one and not, he always does, but which is fine. But to be in that position is really humbling. That being said, he does a really good job on his own. He doesn't need to check all on too much. He's really done a great job. Again, the way he was raised in his morals and humble and always sign and taking pictures,
I'm always trying to be the bad guy for him because he's not going to be and just says again more about his character. But he's not the only guy, any guy would kind of do that. We have a group full of awesome young guys, but General Maya has done a great job with it, handling it. And it's definitely growing at an exponential rate to say the least. I think he's built for it and he's been handled at a high level, but those around them were trying to help him out a little bit. What made Quincy the first freshman to do this black trade issue? Yeah, I mean, that's a good question. I think that, you know, frankly, you know, I don't, I'm not really fully evolved with that. So I can be, but I wasn't. You know, I think that people on the outside, whether it be defense or even coach day or anybody brought it to my attention, you know, we're kind of just going about practice.
And that's our expectation to make plays, not make mistakes. And so I'm starting to make a lot of a lot of plays consistently. I think the consistent level that he's been as a person, being on, being on time and doing his job description on each play and the ball is coming your way and making some big plays. And, you know, it starts, it starts being seen by your peers and your peers are asking for it. They start barking, getting a stripe off all those kind of things. That's the ultimate sign of respect. I think when your peers, you know, go to your bat. And he's not going for his bat. No one knows. People are bringing it to your position coach. I think it speaks volumes of the general respect that you're earning through the process. So I think something like that happened. And, you know, as well as they're based on his peers and other coaches. Steve, I'm Chris. Cleveland dot com. Ryan Day was talking about how impressed he's been this spring with Austin, Sarah, all that he's been able to do and Tyler Bones talking last week about the importance of the cross training and all that that goes into that. How much have you seen Austin benefit from this spring and everywhere that he's been and helping with peace, do you think he's going to be regardless of where he fits on this offensive line?
Yeah, I think Austin's been awesome. I mean, he literally, you know, what was they say, he played every split every position, we just move around, you know, and handles it. And you know, he's one of those guys. I feel like you watch film over and over again day after day. His name never really gets brought up, you know, in a good way. Like he on the online. Your name gets brought up when usually not going as well. You know, I mean, they're literally at the point of the tack on every single play. So there's nowhere to hide. And so, but Austin, when his name gets brought up, he's like, man, that's a good job. Right. Good job. Pass off that combo. Whatever. It's always positive and been really impressed with him. You start in the winter. Did a great job through the winter again, continuing to build their respect for his peers. And then he's going to good job. Really good job. Just being very consistent to spring. Are left, Jeff Gilbert, press pros. Brian, since you've been working more with the whole offense, I'm close to quarterback play. What has grown in your, I don't know, appreciation of that position and what those guys have to do and go through. What do you think more about those guys versus maybe what you thought before is just a wide receiver guy?
Yeah, I mean, I mean, there's no just a wide receiver guy. If you are just wide receiver guy, you won't be a very late or long. It's all about, it's all about quarterback play. You know, so I think in that same world, though, to the point is that, you know, to be a great receiver or receiver guy, whatever you want to call it, there's only one page, just a quarterbacks page. So everything is based off them. There, whether it be their progression, their timing, the stresses they have is what we're trying to minimize. So if you don't fully understand the quarterback play, it's hard to maximize receiver play, I think. That being said, yeah, I'm still always learning. I think that I can't say anything's jumped out massively right now. But I would say that, you know, I guess I would say that the preparation level, I mean, what is required to execute and play at a high level? It's just not capable in the a lot of time, right? I mean, there's only so much time where I'll be with players. If you're not willing to spend, you know, your own time, getting prepared for practice to be to maximize one's ability.
There's a good chance you're not going to maximize your ability. So, you know, other positions, I mean, online same thing, I mean, receiver play sometimes can, can, you know, get away from it. We do a great job studying and being in the room extra for sure, but the requirement of a quarterback to know the fixed protections, the BR run game coordinator based on the calls, you know, to get us in different checks. I mean, there's so much thing you know. And frankly, the, you know, the online is good as the quarterback. The receiver's line is good as the quarterback. The offense is only as good as the quarterback and it's our responsibility to put guys in position to maximize with their capable of maximizing, but their inability to notice that they can just spend extra time outside the a lot of time. I think it's critical and the amount that it takes, I guess I was maybe a little naive to, but the guys are doing a great job doing it. Just a couple more coaches got a meeting. Rob all our Columbus dispatch Brian, you know, get reached the mount top. You got a banner out there national champs. I think you keep these guys grounded. Being in the moment, looking ahead. Not back.
Are you tougher on because? No, I think that. I mean, I think we have a lot of guys. You know what? I think it's understanding that we were trying to build the map to get to where you wanted to get to. But now that we have the map doesn't mean we've traveled the path. So like we know what it looks like. The guys that are here know what it's supposed to look like. The guys before us. Stay unbelievable. Example how to get to where you want to get to. So the focus is on trying to replicate what they just did and how they operated. Can't say we've done that right now. So it's very easy to stay motivating because they already know it's not good enough. Frankly, and so the last thing they want to do is put in a ton of effort and then not reach their goals. So motivation. I don't think is needed. I think there is a catching up of those and maybe aren't quite sure what it takes. You know, and. But overall motivation is not what we've needed. Clearly, a message is definitely what we've been focused on. And I think the message is being received. So not concerned about, you know, motivation and and the looking back, if you will.
I think everyone's pretty pretty focused on being forward and knowing we haven't accomplished anything. So. Steve, who would you say is the leader of your wide receiver right now? I would say carnal tape. Brandon and his. Probably done the most most outspoken, you know, in the room. Yeah, I would say they're doing a good job. Those are probably the two guys that would jump out my room. Yep. Brandon, he's been in trouble. Obviously. Carnal taking on that role. Yeah, more and being more vocal. He's a good football player. Obviously, he's the only thing that process for him and becoming a more vocal leader to say that on him. What was the question? What do you think like the growth? Part of it. Yeah, I mean, he's I think he's pulled guys aside. You know, it had one-on-one conversations with him. He's locked in. You know, just I think he saw the impact that a mecha made in the role he played. And to think that we're gonna lose that and then be a better group. Part doesn't mathematically make sense to him.
So someone's got to sit up in that role and one-on-one respects him to. He knows he's capable of it. And it's just the desire and the appreciation. I think to be at the order table now, the overhead and appreciate the way a mecha probably went about his business. And so he probably valued that appreciated that. And he's just being assured we still have that. Final question. Bill Rebellion. On this this time. Could you assess the running back room? I think it's pretty much assumed both as running backs to CJ and James. I think that's hand-in-systems probably the way you've got to go again. How do you think it's working? And you see third and maybe fourth guys up in the mirror? I think that, you know, in college football, in a football ball, really, you got to have depth in the running back room. I think that very apparent in the NFL. It's usually a two-back system, you know, very very rarely is it one guy. But in college, I think we saw the benefit of that last year. The ability to compliment each other is really important. The ability for us to identify what they do great and put them in good positions to be what they are.
What they're best at, I should say, is really important as a coaching staff. It's been very impressed with even the younger guys, Sam and Bo. And the way they've come along, consistency, so what you're chasing, right? You're always able to. That's why you're here. But how often you do it ultimately dictates how much you play. So, but overall, I think locksmen on them, they understand the standard and in pass pro and not being a guy we got to sell out because you can't pass protect. So, we were blessed, especially with Trey last year and Quinchon. But no, these guys have done a good job. They're competing. They've been very coachable. It's shown a blog on film. But yeah, I mean, it's always hard on backs. Every opportunity you get to go live and break tackles really gives you the most feedback on what these guys are capable of. If you're just playing tag out there, you never get any art. At least you shouldn't. But the running backs on contact days have done a good job. James has done a really good job growing, really excited about him. Everyone's really excited about him and CJ.
So, you know, I think ultimately, you know, how group the, how will, how good would the group be? It's probably based on, you know, the top, the bottom rising, right? You're gonna have some guys at the top, but, you know, where's the floor? And so I think, uh, bow and Sam has done a really good job. And many more guys to get healthy. More guys on campus, but very encouraged. And you saw him improve. And then, um, McLean, I think is a, is a great plus. I mean, he is a guy that has football intelligence. He's picked it up. You know, he's kind of of of those incoming freshmen who still should be in high school. He's a guy, I think you're going to point to and you can see right now he's going to be a player over to the right Austin Ward, the podcast. A healthy Mitchell Melton. How does he fit in for your defense? What does he bring to it? Yeah, he's, you know, Mitch is that combination player, you know, in, um, in our four down, you know, he's a guy that can do a lot of things, uh, drop fold in there and make plays.
You see some of that all the time. Really athletic, um, you know, we're kind of loaded at that end position. So he's going to play there. But, you know, like I said last year, we, we haven't needed it. But he's a guy you would point to along with C. J. Hicks, you know, for the, for the long season. Um, people get injured, you get a little light inside. It's always hard on the defensive tackles. But if you're going to play with three ends, you know, that's Mitch is a guy who definitely can do all that. He has that over to the left. Joey Kaufman Columbus dispatch. Jim, you've talked about this before, but I think in past years where you're going up against a really talented receiver group offense to encourage your players to it's not okay if they give up to the play and to go nearly almost the first half today where you. The offense didn't get them the end zone until the late in the second half just. And you guys have guys down the second area. Just what, what did you think of that sort of trend and how it's evolved in the way you guys almost shut them out of the first.
Yeah, I think it's become, you know, an expectation now. You know, our DB's, you know, our BIA, best in America, we. Let the country and past defense. Right. I think it was 96 what I, what I got here and it was number one last year. So they've taken that spirit. So it's a competitive spirit. It's an expectation now. It doesn't matter who we're going against. It's, it's they view it as a standard. So that was good to see in the first, first half. Over to the right Spencer Holbrook, Vladimir and roll. Jim, we've talked about safety changing the way that you play defense and the Leo and the linebackers, but how much does having the depth that you guys have a defensive tackle change the way that you can do things defensively. Yeah, I mean, you're going to play to your strengths, you know, and that's, that's my job is to what do we have and what do we do best? And when you have defensive tackles, but I've said it before, it helped our defense so much last year when you have defensive tackles that actually make tackles, which is what we have right now.
It changes the way you call a game, you know, it certainly helps you be in better shape on explosive plays on the back end. You don't have to do a whole lot to help those guys out because they're making tackles. So you got to go, you got to go with that, you know, you got to let those guys play and and they're good. So you can't get too far away from the scheme of having those defensive tackles make place because they're doing it and it works. So I'm going to go to the left Tony Gerberman, Buck Eye Huddle Jim Ryan talked about the quarterback run being more of a thing with the offense here during the season, how much of when you're facing a team like that, how much does that impact your day to day throughout the week preparing for that? Yeah, it's a ton, you know, it I think it changes everything you do on defense. You see it everywhere from the NFL on down if you have a quarterback who can make plays with his feet. And it seems better be designed that, you know, to to take that away into account for it. So it changes the way you look at everything when you're game planning.
Thank you, Donovan. Over here to the right. Tim May, the Tim May podcast. Yeah, Jim, you brought me to you when I asked Ryan about just, for example, Calvin Simpson, Hunt, but the corner seemed to be playing almost with the chip owner, shelter to a certain extent. I mean, Davis and Nick, but no sin took today personally. It looked like you know, to make us some of the height going into the game, but what do you see from that group in particular that? Who is you going into this off season? Yeah, when you can when you have corners that you can count on again, just like having defensive tackles in the run game, when you have corners, you can count on that are going to compete all the time, no matter what the situation is. And we've developed that again, it changes the way you call the entire game. I mean, you you're able to leave those guys on an island. You're able to switch out coverages and they know what they're doing and they take great pride in it. So having those guys out there in the development. It's a big deal. It really is.
Yeah, I mean, he's he did come in late and you know, he compete, he's one of those guys that just competes every day, doesn't say much, you know, he's trying to live up to the standard or the other guys. And you see him coming along, you know, you see him step by step coming along and you know, put him in a, you know, competitive atmosphere, same step up. That's a great sign. And final question for coach Noel's, Dan Hope, 11 Warriors. You mentioned CJ Hicks a few minutes ago. Have you seen him take the strides you need to see the spring to trust him as a guy who could be a potential starter on his defense? Yes, I mean, I think CJ has shown that he has talent and I think it's my job to put him in the best situations for him because he can be a force. You know, he's much better when he's bloodsing or he's directed because he's able to use his athletic ability, but he has certainly shown that he's going to be able to help this defense coach.
Thank you very much for your time. All right, and we will bring offense of coordinator and quarterbacks coach Chip Kelly to the podium now. We'll open up questions over to the left bill Rebinovitz Columbus dispatch. Chip, what are your just general impressions of the offense coming out of spring, especially a quarterback? We'll look at all 15. So I think, you know, this day is a big part of it, you know, because it was the first time they were going to play some of those guys that were going to play in from the crowd. And it was an amazing crowd. You needed 80,000 for spring game. Now you could see some of the young guys kind of looking around like, wow, this is different than the indoor. But that's what they have to get ready to play it. So we got better from practice one practice 15. It's still an evaluation through the whole process, but it's not something in the players, though, to the will, we're not making a decision, walking off the field today saying, hey, this is the direction that we're going in. We'll be very authentic and look through everything and make sure that we get a really good feel for what it all looks like and then who will best move this offense. That's what our decisions can do.
I do. I think we got a lot of guys there. That part's tough. I think because you got it. There's guys that deserve reps, you know, when they're all competing for it. So, you know, sometimes you'd like to be sometimes when you had a guy who was an initial starter, well, he's going to get the bulk of the reps to get them better, but they capitalize on. We really rolled them, you know, if you were at some of our spring practices, you're watching all those guys rotate and rotate out. And as we talk about all the time, you know, the old adage is don't count your reps, make your reps count. You know, we'll put it all together and really come up with, you know, which guy do we really feel is going to help us move this offensively. Over to the far right, Bill Landis, the podcast, Kings of the North. Hey, Chip, you said when we first talked to you that the basis of a lot of your success running the football just kind of figuring out what your guys do best and then leading into that over 15 practices now. How good of a field do you think you have for that? And then what are the next few months look like as you try to piece that all together? Really good question. It's interesting because the one thing that I think sometimes makes tough and an evaluation is what a good front we want to get.
You know, so for 15 practices, those guys on the other side of the ball were pain, you know, Jack and JT and Ty Lee can those guys. But I know come fall, there's not going to be anybody more happy that we have those guys in the defense side of the ball because of what they can do. So I still think we'll have to really evaluate that what we're going to what we're not what we got to get better at and what we got to work on. But I think the work we got against such a quality defense was really key for us. Over to the far left, Nathan Barrett, Cleveland dot com. So you were going this time, it came out of the spring with still a lot of question marks about the offensive line. And even I guess that last season came out with question marks. How have you seen that progress in the time that you've been here and what's your confidence level that that offensive line is going to allow this offense to do everything it wants to do this fall? Yeah, I mean, I've been here short amount of time. So I didn't know. I really don't have anything to compare it to. So I kind of tabular rassa come in with a blank slate and just observe it. I think we're really athletic. I think Donnie and Seth and those guys inside are really smart and really intelligent.
They allow you to be able to make adjustments in game. Just tucking football with some of those guys. It's like, well, these guys are wired the right way. And a lot of those guys have played a lot of football. So they can bank on their experience. I think we've got about four guys that have played significant amount of snaps and we've got to make sure we can find out who the fifth guy is. But that's similar to where the quarterback spot is. I think. And I also think of the offensive line. You're not going to play a 16-17 game season and just playing with five guys. You really have to develop your depth there. There's going to be a number two center that's going to play a lot of football. There's going to be a number two guard, whether it's on either side of the ball. There's going to be a third tackle. I think you're going to get tested, especially with this new in this new playoff format. You really have to think that way. So you're not looking for five starters. You're really looking for 10 starters because you're going to have to probably play 10 guys to get when you get through a 16-17 game season. Over to the right. Austin Ward, the podcast. I think it was the first play of the game, the T-Formation and then the reverse center spin move with Will Howard. What's the inspiration for that package and that sort of wrinkle with the quarterback?
Mr. Hayes. Do you have a there's a looming figure around this whole program. You know, we get to go to work every day and then Woody Hayes athletic center. So it was good enough for Woody. We're going to stay there. We're going to do it. We ran some last year. I think we took 21 snaps at UCLA and T-Metish Short Yardage Formation for us. And we've done some different things with it. But I also, I think our players had a lot of fun, you know, practicing that and doing some different things. So it's a small part of our offense. You know, we will not be in the T-21 times in one game. But, you know, we may get it in some short yard situations. And I think it's come back. There's a lot of schools right now that are starting to do that. You know, it's really just you're trying to, you know, you got a half a yard to get. You know, you're trying to get your big guys in the game. And I think we use three tight ends and two running backs in our formation today with Packard being the full back in that situation. So there's a lot of different things you can do with Short Yardage. But a little bit of a tribute to Coach Hayes and what he means in this program.
Joey Kaufman, Columbus Dispatch, over to the left. Chip, did you look back? Now, you've been here two months, 15 spring practices. Is there something you feel best about what you've been able to accomplish with this offense? Well, I haven't accomplished anything because I didn't take a snap. But I think the most impressive thing since I've been here is how close close this football team is. You know, some programs talk about a brotherhood. This is really a brotherhood. Our practices, as we talked about, how good our defense is. They're highly competitive, but they're not combative. And those guys really work very, very well together, both the whole line in the D line and the secondary and the receivers. The competition is the best, it's got to be the best there is in the country. You know, and that makes you better. But I think sometimes competition, you know, guys can lash out and it gets really combative. And then all of a sudden the fight breaks out, the fight breaks out. And we're trying to accomplish and get footballed on them. But I think the way these guys cooperate and work together as a group is a special bond. And I think you're going to need the closest team and the most connected teams on the ones that win. Over to the right here, Andy Baxter and Letterman-Roll.
Jay, obviously there's been a lot of talk about Jeremiah, but Ameca is the big return in this group. He kind of reminded everyone what he can do today. What's it been like working with him and what kind of weapon can he be for you guys? Good point. And Ameca has reminded me and the other 14 practice sessions of what he can do. Special player, you know, and J.J.'s a really talented player also. But, you know, I think all of the whole group, a Cornell tape, did some really good things watching him this spring. And for all of them, you know, I mentioned it with the offensive line. I came in with a blank slate and I had no opinions formed. Not that really just wide-eyed and just observant, but, you know, that, I think that wide-receiver is really special. And I think there's a bunch of guys in there. And again, you have to play multiple games after the regular season is over. You're going to make sure you're going to need depth like that. And the fact that it's, you feel a little bit comfortable right now. That we got some guys there that can make some plays in the perimeter. And that really dictates how people are going to defend you. You know, so you got a couple really good running backs, you know.
So, are they going to load the box? Are you really going to load the box and leave those guys in one-on-one coverage? Well, then it's the quarterback's responsibility to decipher that and get the ball to those guys. So, or do they at least a double coverage? They list a double coverage and now it's a little bit lighter boxing. You can run the ball. So, having too many weapons is a good problem to have. Second roll left, Pat Murphy, 24-7 sports. Chip, we've talked a lot about kind of the quarterbacks maybe vying for the starting spot. But some of the younger guys, what have you seen from them? We got an opportunity to see more of them today than we probably have. What's your assessment of them as they kind of get into this? I always am so impressed with young guys that enroll early in watching how they get acclimated and what they do. You know, when you look at Julian and Aaron and JJ, you know, they should be in the hot lunch line of their high school. And they're out here playing in front of 80,000 people. And they've really progressed when you watch them in meetings and listen to them. And they interpret, you know, so basically the whole concept, too, is we throw them in the deep end and see if they can swim.
You know, this, we didn't baby anything. We don't put the install in with, hey, you guys are in, we're in install. We're in install. This with the older players. And then you guys, you know, go sit at the kitty table and we're just going to do the really simple things with you. They get it all in the more they can digest the more when you're in a room, when you're checking for understanding and asking questions. And they can spit back to you the more confidence you have when they get in there with the plays that you can call for. So those guys have been impressive. They're still learning, you know, they were the, the guys today that were kind of looking around and saying, wow, there's like 80,000 people here along with the offensive coordinator and the quarterback coach because I was kind of looking around because I had actually never been in the stadium until yesterday when we had. Our 14th practice in there. So I played Ohio State once when I was at Oregon, but that was in the Rose Bulls. I had never been actually in the stadium until yesterday. So I caught myself when I went into the stadium today looking around saying 80,000 for spring. Again, that's impressive. Got time for just a few more folks over here to the right Dylan Davis Delaware Gazette.
Given what you just said about throwing them into the deep end, what stood out the most about Julian's progression through 15 practices and where he is that you guys head out of spring. Julian is a very fast processor. You know, he really thinks very, very quickly on his feet like he makes really quick decisions. He doesn't stick on and read. He can progress and any ceasing is really well for a young player. You know, in not having been exposed to a lot of college defenses and especially what Jim does. You know, Jim can make Jim can make a young freshman quarterback cry with some of the stuff he does. But you know, I never saw that with Jules and I that's been impressive his his ability to retain and you know him and JJ. The compliment I would say to him is if you got here and you didn't know what class they were in, you wouldn't say that those guys were freshmen in terms of how they've picked things up and you know sometimes freshmen act like freshmen. But the guys who are special they don't act like freshmen, you know, they act like football players and those are two guys that are examples of that far left.
Cameron T. Robinson, the athletic chip you on the topic of freshman James people's exam. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you talk about how deep you need to be in this era of college football. But as you search for RB three, what did you see from them today and what is what has their growth been like in this spring? Yeah, James really flashed early for for me not knowing again kind of. Let's just take. Don't worry about what the background is where they're from who they are. The this guy of this stars this guy of that stars. It's the raw back ice and there's how they do it. I think James is got really good feel and vision. He can hit things. I thought sand is really good things today. T.C. is another guy who really came along during the spring and in work constantly talking in our staff meetings about depth. We're very cognizant of the fact that the playoff situation has changed. So you have to develop that depth, you know, used to be maybe have a parent affair was what everybody says, but I think you may have to have more than that. You're talking about 16, 17 games.
You're really going to be tested that way. So I was really happy with how those young guys have come along here in the 15 training sessions that we've had. Oh, here to the right. Tim May the Tim May podcast. Thank you, Jerry. You have your own podcast. Like these guys all had like a name next to their. Okay. He must have some juice if you got your name in your pocket. Definitely. By the way, I like it. It's not just the lunch last hot lunch last night. It's a hot lunch. Yeah. Just two quickies. Number one, do you feel compelled to let these quarterbacks know where they stand here? Yeah, it's coming up Tuesday. You know, to me there. Yeah. Where does that go? I mean, in your mind, they're all sit down as a staff and visit me. Not in the nine. I mean, he does an unbelievable job of I think all our players understand where they fit and what the picture is. And we'll give them our assessment. This isn't, you know, we're not going to come back. But we do it after every day. They know where they stood after practice. One after two after three after four. We grade everything. They're getting constant feedback in terms of where we are.
And then after 15, which we had today, but we can't do it unless you watch the film and can really look at that. You can really look at the things because you may see something, but you're on the sideline. You know, why did he make that decision? Well, I couldn't really see the field safety from where he was. Okay. Now I understand why you made that decision. So, you know, what, what they'll, what meetings with all our players and that's, that's always been the method. So this week during, you know, between one day through Friday, we're all scheduled. No one's going on the road. We're recruiting until after that. But we're all a player meeting. We're in every position. You know, offensive line, defensive line, linebacker safety is everybody. Everybody's going to sit down with their position coaches and know where they fit. And we see them. But do you feel a pressure with the, with the transfer portal looming? I mean, you've been a head coach for a long time. I mean, is that on your mind at TSD? Yeah, I think all the work you got. I'm aware of it. I'm 100%. And I don't think it's pressure. But I think you just open lines of communication and everybody knows, you know, which, what your evaluation was through the training sessions that we have.
Guys, we've got to have, we got real quick. Last two questions. Dan Hope and then Rob Aller. Feel like you need to have a starting quarterback named by and whatever biggest things you're going to be looking for between now and then and determining who that guy's going to be. Well, between now and, and whatever then is we're not allowed as coaches to go back out and practice with him. You know, in college football, you get 15 training sessions in the, in the off season. And they'll go back to work and with Mick in the, in the weight room and getting bigger, getting faster, getting stronger. They'll have organized activities themselves. And they, they do a really good job of that. But once there's a football out, like we're not allowed to be there to evaluate and even assess. So they're really from a football standpoint on their own until August. So you always want to do it earlier. But I also believe every time I've, I've been involved in this is that it kind of happens organically and authentically. You know, because the players know. If you say, we decided we're going to be with Joe and they all think it's Tim.
You know, they're in the locker room with him every day. Players, players understand, you know, who they'd feel is the guy. And most of the time it, the decision is very obvious. You know, when you just say, hey, this is where we are with it. You know, but there's that timetable thing. I don't, I don't, I can't give you an exact timetable in that. So Rob. Chip, you talk about Julian, but typically in your experience, you've done it again, like Tim said a long time. How long does it take for the game to slow down for a young QB? I think it depends on the individual. You know, I've had some kids. And we're early, you know, you're like, wow, Marcus Murray, I was like that. Remember vividly second practice. He got to the fifth reading, the progression, and threw it out here in this big game. And I asked him, why I do it all? I asked why, because I just want to understand it. And I said, why did you do that? And he goes, I don't know what we call that defense, but there was like a lot of guys over there. And they didn't seem like there was anybody over there. But for him to process it that foul, and he was right.
And he came back the other day, whether that was cover six the other day coach, I learned what you guys call the coverages. But it all happens differently. I've got guys that for two years seem like they're just, you know, they're really struggling. And then the light bulb goes off and you know, whoa, like they got it. So everybody has different learning styles, you know, our job in the evaluation process is to identify those learning styles. You know, they cognitive learn, they an auditory learner, you know, do they learn by feel? Is it more a feel guy, you know, a more film guy? You know, it's all different. And I think we have to keep poking and prodding. And for us as coaches, that's the challenge too, is what is their best learning style? And how can we convey it? Because education basically is just a transportation knowledge. But it really doesn't matter what I know or what I know, it doesn't matter what they know. That's always kind of what we're working on and studying and thinking about and kind of where we are and how much can they handle and then how much is too much, you know, because this may be a great play. I agree 100%. But if you don't feel it's a good play, then why is it in, you know, I mean, and that's that's this whole feeling of process that we're all, they're learning us and we're learning them.
So, this is have identities, so do coaches really? Running quarterbacks, is that something you've always sort of lean toward or is it year by year case by case? What advantages do you like about it? Because all your guys can run a little bit. Yeah, I think a running quarterback causes problems for defense. So when, when plays break down, the unscheduled plays, you know, if you just go back to the recent Super Bowl. And while that last drive, the two big plays were Mahomes run. The Petra Mahomes is not a runner. And he's not calling design quarterback runs for Pat. But when the defense matches up and plays two men and turns their back to the quarterback, well, maybe the best decision is to take off. The second one he took out, I'm like, he may score. You know, a lot of guys go and they want to hook side, you know, and there's times where you have to understand if you do have a running quarterback, we talk about the best of the best ability is availability. You know, you know, you're not going to be able to run your children taking people on, but we are always looking for quarterbacks that have the ability to run.
We're not looking for running backs that can throw, you know, so you're not going to see us 20 times a game. We're running the quarterback. There are people that run offensive styles and are really successful with it. But with this group we have right now, that's not. Now they can hurt you with the feet. We'll did it when he was at case date, you know, obviously Devon took off a couple of times today. We're really good athlete. Julian can run, but, you know, we're not calling design quarterback runs, you know, you're not going to see, you know, a tremendous reminder of respect for co-chays and the legacy that he left here. The straight T is about as far as we go. We are not going single wing. So we are not going to snap and run quarterback ice on quarterback power. But it is a, it's another weapon, you know, and if it also keeps defenses honest, you know, if your defense event is going to continue to bend from the quarterback, closing the edge and he's getting first downs, within the defensive end has to stay outside and contain the quarterback. Well, then we can run the ball up and hand the ball off sometimes in our running game. Our quarterback really is a blocker. He's responsible for a defender if the defender was cheating and fitting it on the run.
And then his responsibility is to make, make the defense be honest and that's really air did that a couple of times today. And we had a block that safety was sticking his face in there. So we took off around the edge. What happens in next play the defense is wider. Then what do we get to do? We get a chance to hand the ball off to the running man. Coach, thank you so much for your time and thank you for being a buck eye. All right. Thanks. It was definitely addressed here, you know, this pretty easy. I think Austin Saragall stepped up in a big way, you know, with the thought of being out. And then, you know, Carson can play both guard and center, which is good. And, you know, we've actually, you know, sent us done a nice job as well. But it was good to see Austin, you know, he moved from guard to tackle a couple times and even with the ones he was in their battle in his tail off. So I think we have built some depth there, but again, you know, we got to go play some games and see what we're going to do. Rob Aller. What's the main thing you want to see out of your mind? Yeah, you know, again, whether it's whatever happened last year is last year, but I know that the message to our to our offensive line is we want to play one of the hardest playing offense line in the country.
Now, we got to play with technique, but at the end of the play, like knock the line of scrimmage back and play with your hair on fire. It's hard as you possibly can. There's a lot that goes with the playing of the offensive lines. All the communication is a lot of things that have to get into place. It's not a nice job of communicating and it's getting the offense better now takes control up front and brings everybody together, which is great. But to me, like that's it. Now, we could list a bunch of other things, but to me, we've got to move the line of scrimmage. We've got to be just playing with our hair on fire and knocking people back and playing physical. And that's the start to game. That's the end of the game. The destination spot for wide receiver. You see that definitely? How do you get over that? No, I don't see it that way at all. I think we'll see what we got this year, but I feel like we've got some really good young players in the system. I think that we should have the best offensive line in the country. That's the standard here. It has been for a long time. And so we'll keep pushing towards that this year. And I think everybody in that room will take the same thing.
So, Sonny has really stepped up and played well. He's made this transition from safety to linebacker very well. I think he did a nice job in the spring, but you could definitely see as he went into the summer, just bigger, stronger, being more comfortable closer to the line of scrimmage. It's different when you're closer to the line of scrimmage. It's doing a better job getting his hands on, on offense alignment and getting off of blocks. He's going to better job with his hands, or he understands the communication. The linebackers always have to be involved with the front. They can be involved and fit into the back end. He's doing that. I think he's looking forward to playing in a game and getting an idea of what it all looks like. But I can tell you in practice, he's playing fast, he's playing violent. I think he's a nice job of taking the meeting in the field, being very intentional about his work, but playing really hard. Is he going to see the number one in there? Yeah, I haven't talked to Jim because we'll make that final decision here over the weekend, but he's certainly the leader in the club boss.
Can you tell Ryan, I mean, Seth McLaughlin, can tell he's been there, done that. Has he projected that to the offensive line? You're still, when I'm saying, for the leadership stand going a grown man. How does that just come up? How does that show up? He's just poised. It's not getting rattled when, you know, coach parks at you. It's, you know, OK, I got this. Let me get it under control. It's seeing something in practice and being able to adjust on the move. It's being prepared when you walk on the field. It's recognizing how hard you have to play at the position. It's kind of all of those things into one, but he's got great communication up front. He talks to the guys. He's moving quickly in there. And when you have experience like he has, you know, the game seems to slow down at times yet. You know, he seems to be playing it at fast lover. He's going to spend some over.
See that. And there was a point where you got a black stripe off and I feel like he took a step in the right direction. When you come in in the summer, it is very difficult to get on the field, especially early in the season. Whether he does or not, I will see. But if he continues to practice the way that he's been practicing, then he'll give himself a chance to be in the rotation midway through the season. Or later in the season, which is similar to some of the water seevers that you've had before. You've seen some of those guys get some reps really in the season that then make an impact later in the season. I think that's probably more his path right now. Now shows up and starts doing great. And you know, we'll, you know, we'll give him the reps he deserves or like Jeremiah is in a different situation because he came in here in January. And he was a little bit ahead. Anybody who comes in and January to me, I don't look at them as a freshman anymore. They've been here during the program and we expect them to contribute.
I'm still in there right there talking and communicating. But in the skirmishes we've had, you know, it's been offense for his defense. So I've mostly been in the offensive side still kind of going through all those types of things. And there's a lot to work through this year just with the play clock and then to want to mean that is you know, the close to my communication inside of 15 goes off. There's a lot of things that go on there. We don't really get notification on that. So I'm trying to, you know, just help chip with that and some communication that we're a person. But I'm very much involved with special teams. I think with the two minute warning, there's some strategic things that are going to go on in the half of the game that I really be involved with. But to your point, just overall just looking guys in the eye and making sure that, you know, they have to right look in their eye to, you know, that they understand. You know, with the situation, what's going on in the game, you know, I think that happened sometimes with young players, you know, they just like playing the next play. And that's not just how that's not how it works. We'll get to win the situations. And so all those things will come into play and making and gain adjustments.
You know, be involved with all three faces, you know, watching the game and a tablet to try to identify what happened last series. I think all those things will be happening. Right now, Nick is going to be the starter. And, you know, that competition will go into next week. But right now, as we head into the weekend, he is the starter and the plan is ready to go. The first part of what we go on Saturday and Saturday. He's got a strong leg. He's made it a good transition into the country, but also just playing, you know, football and not Australian, but football, which is very, very good. The snap to kick is really improved. You know, that was one thing. He's a taller guy. So the ball has to get out of his foot faster. I think he's done that his time time has been good and he's been more consistent. You'll see, you know, he'll kick a few.
He'll just go right out of the stadium and he just got a strong, strong leg. So we're looking for that consistency. He's shown that here most recently. So he's got the upper hand right now. I don't know if it's because Will maybe took a little bit longer to make a decision in December of them. Some of the other top of the line quarterback, who much was there. Or because maybe there was a thought he wasn't going to be the starter. It can't be state this year. But it seems like people have been kind of as a game manager type of quarterback. After eight months with him, where do you see his ceiling? What is Will's special afraid to you? Where do you see him taking something? I see a bunch of traits there. I think the first trait of size is big. He can stand in the pocket and see strong. So I mean, that's the first thing to notice about him. And then whether it's standing in the pocket with poise. I think that's another trait that he has that's excellent. He he feels a rush. But he stands right in there. I think the next trade is just, you know, his top end speed.
And he can run 22 miles an hour at that size, which there's not a lot of guys who can do that. So I think that's the extraordinary. And I would I would say his overall leadership command in the huddle is is another, you know, something that he's he's really, you know, grown into in the last few months. And he's been here. And then his accuracy. He's been very accurate since he's been here. And when he knows what's going on and he can't to spell what's happening. I mean, it looks right. He's still. And he can hurt you. You know, a bunch of different ways. So, you know, his ceiling. That's that's going to be kind of up to how he plays this season. But, you know, I see a player who has a lot of great skills that, you know, translates well to the next level. So we'll see. But I know his first focus is on winning games around here. Coach, thank you. Coach, you have to go. And the goal line and down to the Jackson.
Please, I mean, you have nerves naturally. That's the first complaint I was good. I was rolling. Also, it's a weird. I was trying to say it was also the first start. Yeah. You, yeah, it's like I prepared well and camp and practice all week. And I was, I was ready. Yeah. I have two multi year starters. I did a lot. I mean, I couldn't ask them, hey, what we got here, but I was prepared well. I was telling Jimmy and says, like, I would play our blocks. Probably emotional. What is it? What is it? It started. It was always my dream to come here and play and start and having that like me. I just like keep going keep building those days and those games and keep building. What a much younger Austin.
No, not I don't think even I told like me, I asked my younger self, even committed. I wouldn't believe that now having a couple of starts. Awesome. Has this happened faster than you? I guess you're technically a soft one. No, I knew that year two. I was going to see you some playing time now starting week one year two. I didn't see that, but I was ready in spring ball. I knew I was going to play some stuff. What does it mean to you to not only get the opportunities to play, but like you play well enough now. Coaching staff trust you. Right there. What are the situations that earn that so early on the year? I guess it shows like my preparation, my hard work and just everything I put into this. And I finally show up on a field. There are moments of season in the end of the spring.
I realized that you could play at this high level. I was with the ones. Yeah, but definitely was in training camp. I mean, blocking highly can tie every day. Like it feels, it feels a lot of confidence and doing it well and not like getting balled or anything. There is defense attack wasn't that easy. Hero and Jason Moore and Taiwan. Pretty much anyone on the deepened line. Okay, Mack as well. I was more collected how about the security. How much can he help you? He helped me a lot and I'm proud that he's our starting center not someone else's. But I mean, he's like the captain of a line. He's another voice on the line with guys like Josh Fryer and Josh Simmons dining and Tiger. That means another voice and another captain on the look ways of having the men.
It's much experience helps. You're in the middle of the middle of the line. I mean, a lot. He can tell you like before the play was going on. Like how to block someone like we need to do. And it helps a lot. I mean, we're talking about how calm he is. How much does that benefit of you? You have a guy who's kind of been there and seen. It makes us more calm. Especially me and Tay, that's our first start. So we were up here with Seth. He brought us down. We were like five. Our emotions weren't high. Is that something he tells you? Is that something you can pick up on by how he's acting? And what I mean, him. We're on the side of him. Both Josh Donney. Like he was telling us like, hey, we're cool. Like we got it. But it's pretty much like everyone. Oh cool group. How much do you do that? As a first time starter, how much did you end that? Me in a lot. That was my first time ever using iPads. We didn't use the iPads in high school.
But you can say like try to remember the defense. You can just come on a silent and bring up. We'll play and get help. Probably the first or second after the, I thought we say all right. So great. Awesome. Thank you very much. Thanks for playing. You're welcome. I just need to. I'm part of you. I said I'll get in the go. That's um, I want to say. Maybe I don't know, but I mean, when I first heard you got the job, I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's. The tempo, I can run with the tempo. You know, I mean, I'm, I'm playing basketball all life in set up football. And I feel like just the fast pace often, so we're running really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw a football at 65 yards, but can you kick a football? 75 yards of Lincoln. No. Probably question. Lincoln, what was your question? How is your, uh, your room after you. He's a blessing man. I can't complain.
He's a great guy. What's his name? His name's Lincoln. He's a clean host. Oh, he's cleaner. I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of pick each other's roomies because we're very clean. We don't like our rooms really messy. Well, it's true though. It's true. The real pretty clean stuff. Luke, are you still cross training in Taggolson or if you just been off guard this morning? Oh, so far I've been all guard. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking the practice, I practice. I did end up being back at Taggolson and I, but you know, I'm just really focused in on this past practice and actually. Yeah. Oh, that mean a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here. And I spent a dream just from being in Ohio kid. I'm from Ohio kid's perspective. It's, I mean, that's the biggest wish possible. I would say that's going to be pretty cool. What was it like to cross your first game getting on the field for the first time? It didn't fly me.
This is going to be a weird answer, but it feels like I was playing a game yet that that makes sense. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing. I just went in that first game and was like, shoot, I'm here now. It's time to roll. You know, it didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't even hit me after. I'm like, what'd you feel doing? It's like getting out there at the end of the game. I'm just like, honestly, I don't know. I felt less nervous that I didn't high school and it makes no sense. What did you see in the middle of the game last time? A lot. I mean, I'm learning from Josh Aniston. I think, prior to one of my biggest role models here, my bigger brother, my first major. Come up with me. I don't want to say this. You do, okay. Yeah, no. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, for being awesome, those are my guys, man. I mean, even Miles too. I mean, all three of them. Those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well. And I'm excited to see where they can get to. And I'm excited to plan and feel with them. Oh, yeah, you know, it's been really helpful. You know, just keep in my mind, just settled and straightforward on the next play.
It's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to stay consistent in my work, I think. That's the biggest thing for me is just staying consistent and worried about the next play. I think it's actually not those big ones. You guys started turning out. It's half plus there, but I just didn't beat off each other. Absolutely, I mean, when you see defensive, when you see defensive start arguing with each other and things like that, I mean, that makes it a lot easier, you know, to have those kind of 11 plays out. What was that like? This was a question of being to start and feeling like you guys were feeling out and having fun with the first game. I couldn't quite get my hold in, they got to be the second one, actually. I mean, it was good at rip off these runs because I mean, we put in so much work to lose and practice and, you know, seeing a product, you know, that hard work. Tech Reserve says that this offensive line wise is young prepare this week with Donald, back in there, they tell her, hold for the first time really, this season.
It's not particularly in Austin, it's just more of Donald and Jackson, pretty season-all-american, etc. I mean, John, you know, Donald and Jackson is a very good football player in there. When he's on the field, he makes his presence tough. I mean, we've all been training on that. If there's no tomorrow, just go through and you know, okay. We know it can be. Yeah, there's a seat to be, there's a seat, so watch it, you guys must be very good. Or even more of a force, it felt like watching the guys. Maybe even if you know, did it feel like that? Yeah, I mean, we put in a work during practice, we practice really hard. Coach, they really challenge us to practice hard. Positions, coaches really challenge us to practice hard. I was just a result of it. When it's rolling like that, what does it feel like being in the mix? It's awesome. When you work hard for something and you're able to see, like, what comes out of it, like, there's no better feeling in that. Can you do it?
Can you do it? Can you do it? No, I mean, I was really funny to see. What has Seth been off on? We've brought you guys for the first two games. What's it been like playing XNN for the last two? He's, you know, he's really, you know, he's really, you know, he's really calm and stormy. You never see real panic and having a guy like that mess you, you know, you're having really played as many meetings for the snaps. There's no one outside rather absent my left and some are right. For Seth, you know, those guys, they do so much for this offensive line. People talk about his intelligence really kind of showing up in the front. And the film room and then on the field. Where have you noticed that intelligence and how has that helped you? Yeah, like I said, and crunch time, you know, when things aren't exactly looking like how we practice it, you know,
having a guy like that, like, we'll do this, this, this, and then we're going to execute it. Having a guy like that, like, there's none better than that. You know, what you got? I'm very from this one. What's my favorite cake? Red velvet. Uh-huh. I almost came back to the coldest time of this one more. I'm going to take a look at it Marshall. They got a couple guys in the deep bits of red that have big tin bodies. Absolutely. What do you see when you look at their tape and see 15, 7 and a couple of those guys are pretty big pieces of size. Yeah, those guys here, they're real players. They're real players. You can sell their coach well. They go hard, you know, they're real players over there.
We've been practicing to the best of our goldies, you know, and the spec pool. And I'm prepared for that. You see they've been for G.A. Tech and Flash. They're different. They take the look. Yeah, they play good ball over there. You know, their defense plays hard. They challenge teams, you know, sometimes they might be overlooked and they still challenge teams. And so they come out there with the mentality like, no matter who's in front of us, they're going to blow out. I mean, the actions right there right in front of you right now, which is kind of a good thing and kind of a bet. And you should shake off the rest, you know, hitting back in it inside. You talking to your friends? Yeah, I mean, I hear from Chris every once in a while trying to not survive there. I'm too much of a... It's always good to hear from guy like that, guys like the one, even Matt Jones returning back.
All right, Patrick, thank you. Appreciate it. Thank you very much. Patrick, for this year, just be able to contend to that job. We're going to go skill set. Thank you. I think it's a lot of things. I wait my weight, my stomach height, this, more regard height. And I'm faster than my feet and I'm just thinking of using it that you can sometimes, like basketball, want to be on that just like defend, but you know, you're going to stay in the stage where you're somewhere else. Exactly. Yeah, that's a great question. I feel like these two can answer that for the year right now. I think KKN here will answer that. I don't know what to say about that. What do you guys think? What do you guys think about that? I'm talking about that. I go and drink today. This man is strong.
I'm talking about that. You get the basketball here. You can just do a thing like that. He's the kind of guy that's really fast. And he got the risk right in the back. He's going to go in and watch the film. He's going to be there. He's going to feel it on the field. I'm not just one. He's not going to have to say he's going to be there. If he was far off, you're all going to be there. He's something like a coach, man. He's something like a coach. Chip Kelly's in full exchange. Your mind about maybe like the idea of tackle versus driving. Obviously his offense of predilections for like, the offense of flying flying. Has he been a part of you settling in the guard? I want to say maybe I don't know, but I mean, when I'm pretty sure you got the job, I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo. I can run with the tempo. I'm playing basketball all life in set up football. And I feel like just the fast pace often, so we're running really fits the guys we have right now.
I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw a football like 65 yards, but can you kick a football? I'm going to say 75 yards, I think. I'm probably question. Lincoln, what was your question? How was your, your roommate at the pub? He's a blessing, man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. What's his name? His name's Lincoln. Keen Holtz. He's cleaner. Oh, he's cleaner. I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of pick each other's roommates because we're very clean and we don't like our rooms really messy. That's true though. It's true. It's a real pretty clean stuff. Luke, are you still a cross-training attack, or some, or have you just been all guard this break? So far, I've been all guard. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking it practice by practice. I could end up being back attacked, but I could not. But, you know, I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next one is some. What do you think? Yeah. Oh, that mean a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here.
I just been a dream just from being in Ohio kid. I'm from Ohio kid's perspective. I mean, that's the biggest wish possible. I would have thought it would be pretty cool. What was it like last year at first game getting on the field for the first time? It didn't fly. This is going to be a weird answer, but it didn't feel like I was playing a game. If that makes sense. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing. I just went in that first game. I was like, shoot out in here now. It's time to roll. You know, it didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't even hit me out there. But I'm all the like, what would you feel there? And if like getting out there at Indiana, I'm just like, honestly, I don't know. I felt less nervous than I did in high school and it makes no sense. What is the value of this game? What is it? What is it? What is it? What is it? What is it? What is it? A lot. I mean, I'm learning from Josh Aniston. I think prior to it, it was one of my biggest role models here. It was my bigger brother in my first game. It's all about the deal. I don't know. It's the deal, okay. Yeah, no. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, Padeon Austin, those are my guys, man.
I mean, even Miles too. I mean, all three of them. Those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well on. And I'm excited to see where they can get to. I'm excited to play on the field with them. Oh, yeah. You know, it's been really helpful. You know, just keep in my mind and just settle it straight forward on the next play. What is this? It's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to say consistent. I think that's the biggest thing for me is just taking a consistent and worrying about the next play. It's my game. And I was like, whoa, I never had that happen. Like no other school, like just Ohio State players can't win. And I was like, wow, that's crazy. Do you like, I mean, you're quiet, but also do you like that? Do you want everything that comes to mind? Do you want to do what you want? I do, but at the same time, I just like to be a normal person. But I don't really like to just like that. I don't know if you're a showman. I mean, I always be described as kind of like your art form. Yeah, I mean, yeah. I want to feel I'm a little bit more chipy a little bit, but sometimes I still be quiet on the field.
What's the competitive part of you? What did that point that you know to satisfy yourself about? Oh, I've been had that, I mean, since I was like eight, nine years old. I mean, happens. I mean, just high-end house rate, just to be competitive. That's the reason why I chose to come to Ohio State. Just to compete each and every day, gets to go, gets the best DB group in the country. That's what I was saying. It's been enhanced in the last several months. I mean, you want to get to the next and then, then sell for it, etc. Oh, yeah, for sure. I'm just going to get to the best two DBs in the country. I mean, that's the reason I can't hear. Just going to get to the guys just go, maybe better each and every day. Yesterday, you played the right zone. Yeah. Yeah. You just had work. And then the two plays later, you called, well, yeah, I worked in the squad. Yeah. You just had work there. I did. I said, I said, I said, well, he said, when he defed little boys, he said, I'm here. I said, okay, I'm going to be back. And I said, I'm going to be back. Then when I'm going to be able to play, I just, I'll just walk off. When you talk to ball, you say, well, I said, I told him, I'm coming back, right?
What's it like getting back to the car now, say, bring the ass to the ass. Okay. It feels great just us two to be on the field together. We're going to make a lot of plays this year. What did you learn from that? I learned a lot, especially from Cardinal, because we both play outside. So, he just learned it from him. And the things he learned, he just teaching me. And he was behind Mar, and stuff like that. So he just teaching me the game for sure. What specifically, did you got better at that? And compared to what you've heard, Scott? I said my footwork, that's the biggest game. My coach, I was looking at that's one thing I need to get better on. So, I mean, I just worked on that in all seasons and just got better. Over time. What, what can still be a work ethic in the end? Still my work at the end. I mean, just, I really don't know. I can't really answer that. But it just, it's just in me, like, I just want to work. That's one thing. I think I say, I get it from my dad. My dad really, really good reason why I worked so hard, because since I was like eight years old, he just wanted me to just work and be the best at what I do.
So, I mean, I really, I say different. Why do you see the clip of my day, you know, like on Johnny Day, when I was on show, and I think I got a lot more shit. And how close did you come to the show? I wasn't, I wasn't super out of, I don't know why. We made a scene like it was that, I was a bugger and that's it. How did your dad set me to? He said a big example. I mean, just, I ain't go say it was only just my dad. It was me, I have a cousin named Jean, it's maybe pretty good for the Seattle Seahaw. So, I was, I looked up to him as well, I mean, seeing what he was doing, I was Virginia would take Austin and Stem and Bayley. So, I mean, he was a motivation for me. And just, all the guys that grew up before me in a minor artist area, a brow area for sure, I mean, just looking at those guys. Guys like, I say Brandon and his for sure, he was class ahead of me. So, I seen things he was doing in 8th grade, and I was just like, whoa, I mean, that's something I want to do. What do you think about the expectations for you? I mean, I Chris Carter on my podcast, he was, he's actually the, he gets to be a factor from the first place, first day, first game, et cetera.
Those are big expectations. Do you have breaks folks? I really don't, I mean, I know it's big, especially for me because, you know, no one playing the country coming in and all the hype around me. So, I mean, I just try to block out all that stuff and just focus on the main thing, just the team and I receive a room and a locker room and, you know, just, first game come if I don't, you know, see the expectations that y'all have for me. I mean, I don't really care. I just want to go out there and win a game. How much of a confidence do you for you when people like Chris Carter, Marvin Harrison Jr. are saying, this guy can maybe next great to see you in Ohio State? I mean, it's, it's something great. I mean, I just got, I just got to go out there on the field and just show you guys that I could beat it and that's, you know, probably great, Ohio State receiver to come through here. So, I mean, it's a blessing and know how that, but, and I just got to go out there and play and show you guys. All it means a lot for me to be, was it the first freshman? Yeah, I mean, just, that's a blessing for me for sure, just, you know,
shows all the hard work that I put in and out to, I mean, on the way to the room, Mr. My dad really, I mean, the maturity, they'll just be older than, don't act my age, act older than my age. I mean, a lot of people tell me that I don't act my age. I'm, I, way, way beyond my, way beyond my years. I mean, just, it just got to be mature and, you know, act, don't act like a kid. What is the couple more questions for Jeremiah? What is it about? It's about 7.30. It's about the age that I put in. It's just, no, when I see a 50-50 ball, I mean, just, I just think it's, I got to meet the players. It's on me, you know, matter how the ball is, or if it's a bad ball, I just feel like I got to meet that player, you know, matter what the certain sense of this, you know, matter if it's a bad ball, I feel like the ball is mine, it's no matter who, I'm fronting me, or, no, no matter. We're getting that, I'm getting between the ball and the fender come from, though. I mean, that kind of sets you apart in my opinion in a lot of ways.
Do you always say that, that? Oh, yeah, I did. I always had that next. I was like, since I started to play with C, right, like eight or nine years old, I just found the way to, you know, make sure that ball is mine when it's in the air. And I just got to always find a way, you know, find a way to meet my quarterback, look good. Can you explain how it's working? Can't Brian or St. Gohar is looking more, thinking so more confident. What do you say, can I say something? Oh, yeah, for sure. He definitely made a big jump from industry. I like his confidence. He's starting to talk more, talk a lot of mess on the field. And I like that about my quarterback, about my quarterback, about the talk, and, you know, just get around his prayers and make him feel good about himself. He talked on the field, you know, just, you just said a lot of stuff, I can't say, but he'll talk for sure. Okay, Jeremiah, thank you very much. Thank you, guys. I was on me, my split was two, he wanted me to come and spit down.
So that I was, that was on me, that wasn't a good, I was in it. The result of that play is science. Clear that will the offense recognizes your single goal, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, one, take that shot to you every time. Were you expecting to have this big role in the offense, this, this, this, not at all. Not at all. Just coming in, you know, this is a high estate. And just all the receivables that been here and I was here before I got here. So I did not have no expectation, no, having the role that I had right now. So I mean, I just get all the things that go and then just be able to be in this position right now. Is that surreal to you then to do me putting up time numbers you already have? Oh, yes, for sure. I mean, but no job, not to not still got to do me finish the hand. What does this say about the trust? I mean, he tells me a lot each and every day that you know, single, single covers, one on one, I'm going to you, no matter who or you don't matter, just throwing it up. You know, you school me, I just got to make a play as well. You realize that the rest of you, I think. Was there a moment of spring or this drink camp or?
I say, I say for a camp. That's really when he was just trusting me, just throwing it out. And I'm just going to go get it. Yeah, for you. On the place that day was the day you said you were supposed to see why? Yeah, to why. Yeah. I should have cut my spit. Now I think I was, you know, like bottom of the numbers, I should have been like numbers plus numbers plus two, I believe. Yeah, something like that. So that's the reason why he just played over top. And that's who is the only great intersection. When you look at your numbers, you've made history as a professional in the Ohio State. This is the goal coach to go program. You feel like a normal parchment. I mean, you're an exceptional freshman for the University of New York National. I mean, I love it. I still feel like I'm just a regular freshman, but you know, a lot of people say I'm not, but. I mean, just the role that I have just coming in is just, it's been a blessing. I just can't think.
Can't say it's on me, it's on God and just the coaches were trusting me to have a put a freshman out there. And just to go out there and make plays and just do what I do. Hearing from your teammates, you've been involved in confidence in you, but you said you didn't expect to have playing time. And you came in. So what did you actually expect? How much do you think you would have gotten? Not that much, because you know, you got a card in theotape. You got mecha, Google, I came back. You got Brandon, is that big of your all? Jaden Ballet, all on God. So really, my mentality just coming in, just working, learning, just no special teams and make plays on special teams. A lot of my mentality was. I don't expect this to be different, big teams play. Yeah. What do you expect to be different about big teams? I mean, just watching them, they played better team than the last three teams in play. So I mean, it's going to be better team than I have in the last couple years that we played, a higher state play them as we could they said. So I mean, it's going to be a good game. You got to go to the higher state as always.
Better be as a player. Thank you. Thank you. Thanks, man. I'm off to my own role. Oh, yeah, for sure. We hungry right now. I can see it in the air. Everybody, everybody on the office, officer line, quarterback, will, Howard, receiverman. We definitely hungry for sure. We had to go out there and have a dinner and just put on the show. Austin Moore, the podcast, should you? I have to tell you what would it know you more. Being interfered with and not getting the call, or not being able to make the catch anyway? I say be able not to make the catch anyway. I've flattened everybody, I've thrown in me, I have to catch it no matter how. the defender on me or not. I just felt like I had to make a play no matter what. I mean, I played Saturday. I feel like I could have scored it, but you know, it was a pass in the friends, but it touched my hands. I should have scored it. Dan, hold on, let me worry. Jeremiah, there's a lot of discourse from fans this week about you not winning the Sean Almson Interfresh in the year of orange. What's your thoughts on that? I mean, me calling as a great player as well. I mean, I can't really not kill. No, Sean is a great guy. I talked to him
two weeks ago. It's a great guy. I learned a lot of things from him outside of football as well. So I mean, I really can't focus on that. I'm just worried about beating Oregon and just going out there to pass it, then just put on the show. And anybody else with questions, Tom Moore, a fuck guy huddle. You mentioned getting bragged by mission and he's that frustrated when we see that from the father teams. Is that frustrated? Is that, you know, you and it feels like you always send your own. Are you still open when you're bragged? Oh, yeah, for sure. I'm still open, no matter if I'm a bragged or not. I mean, they just came out with a good game plan to break it me and a mecha. You know, I mean, just, you know, things didn't go as planned as we thought it would, but you just got to keep moving on and just move forward. Steven, how are you doing? 24-7-Sport. Did you mind that the two touchdown plays that you had with Wil Howard? How many times do you think you guys rep that to get those are perfect throws, perfect patterns? And you beat your guy off the line of scrimmage just how many times do you think and what does it take to perfect that?
Oh, I think we read the lease. I don't know how many times and practice over the weeks that we had off. I mean, just came down to, you know, they press me. We we taking a shot. That's what they told me the week we was off and he told me her before they get in the locker room. I just got to get you a shot. And that's what he did and I just made a play. The first game to get in Storgan, just how tough was that challenge against their secondary? I know you have to finally get into the game, but you guys made plays all day long against them. Just what what's your thought about the challenge those guys gave you? I'll say the challenge is going to be, you know, a good challenge. They have some great global guys there. Jabbar Muhammad number seven, a Nikoari, a Dakota, a Manana and over there. They're great global guys. I mean, probably the best we go see all year for sure. We just got a good name, you know, Bio, Ohio State. That's all. Tony, you're not open. Probably when the whole team on me, I should say, I mean, I'm always
open for me for sure. Let me just know, throw the ball in my area. I'm going to find a way to make a play. I'll say. You talk earlier about, you know, some of the great athletes that you got challenging and you aspire to be like, I guess, where's that confidence kind of come from for you? How long have you had that confidence that you have the ability to be one of the greats in this sport? I mean, a lot of people tell me that I'm going to be great at what I do since I was about going into high school. A lot of people tell me that. I mean, just, you know, football is all I know and that's all I really want to do. Like I live, breathe, sleep, football. Like that's all I really care about. I don't care about everything outside of football. Like football is all I know and I just want to play football rest of my life. Thanks for all, Brett. Let her me grow up. We seem like you have a role where we've tried to connect on some of those deep balls throughout the year. You'll be able to finally do those in that moment. That was kind of carried that forward. Was it the same on the way that you had to continue to progress just in chemistry? I mean, just, you know, the weeks that we had
all, we were just working on deep, deep shots because they tell us, uh, in meetings that we have, we got to take shots downfield. Um, we just got to connect on them and, you know, will tell me before, uh, before the games like I said, um, you just got to throw the ball out there and just give me a chance and I'm gonna make a play for you. That's what that's what he told me and I just got to make a play for him. We can all joke, we can all talk about the expectations and the start of this become, you know, you were just 13 games. How do you handle that? I mean, just the freshmen, how do you take all these expectations? Know when you step on the field that you're always open and still go out there and play? Uh, I mean, expectations. I mean, I can't know how you're staying for a reason. That's what I wanted. Um, when it be childless, I wanted the expectation, expectations, I should say. Um, I mean, Coach Hotline just helped me, uh, throughout the whole year, just preparing me for each game, each week, uh, Mecca, Buka, uh, Cardinal Tey, Brendan Enders, really the whole receiver on just helped me, uh, stuff I don't really know about, uh, it just helped me throughout the whole week.
And, you know, I can't really say as all of me because my talent is, but they really been a big part of the reason I'm having the season that I'm having for sure. I'm Andrew Gillette, please go to the dot com. Jeremiah, over a thousand years, full questions in your first year. When you look back at your question here, what was the most difficult part about adjusting to the college game? What was the part that you had, you know, the hardest part about trying to train learning that playbook? Uh, I playbook is something else, uh, just coming in, uh, spring ball, Mechis new plays in every week. I'm like, well, what is this? Like this new plays every day in Coach Hotline, like, you, we go, you go to be good. Uh, we got no summer fall camp, you go to be great. So, I mean, just, you know, that's it. That's definitely was the hardest part just learning to playbook and a lot of other things have to say for sure. Uh, I'm pretty, I'm pretty sure I got it down pat right now, but, uh, net season, I really want to learn everything, the HZ, uh, yeah, I really want to learn everything in the uh,
playbook for net sure, for sure. That would be 24 seven sports. You mentioned how many guys in my table, you did not feel that so when you are one on one and Will's talk about what he sees, you mean one of what what is going through your mind as you wind up and realize there's one guy covering. When, that's all I could say. I mean, as with uh, Coach Hotline, uh, we do something like in a hotel, uh, Friday night before again, he asked me like a question like, you get one on one, something like that. He asked me, uh, what do you do? I say when and everybody just start laughing. I don't know where I be like, it's true. Like you got to win your one on one about it. So, yeah. Oh, you're right. Bill Landis. Jeremiah, did you move around? So I'm gonna send a seat to the point where you get a couple matchups against linebackers. Yeah. Uh, what goes through your mind when you find yourself matched up against linebackers. Uh, I just started laughing in my head a little bit. Um, um, I mean, linebackers can't really cover, uh, receivers like that. So I just know like it's
I'm most likely going to be open. Um, but you know, they just try to move me around a lot because, you know, people try to bracket me when I'm outside just alone by myself. So that's why there's movement. Me around the world. Or less. They'll have more. Jeremiah, you mentioned the most difficult part of your freshman campaign has been learning the playbook. What has been the best part so far? My way is going to rub off on people eventually. Um, and I would also say that, you know, you kind of have to understand who you're talking to. You know, people, certain stuff makes different people to it. So you've got to kind of know your guys. You know, if you got to get harder on somebody to to make them go or if you got to kind of relate to them, you know, pull them aside, have to talk. So I think that all goes into leadership and you have to be able to that has to be a skill that you have to be able to do. Um, I want to say, you know, too much has necessarily changed, but you can tell the as tremendous trust and coach Kelly. Um, and what he's what he's going to do in the, uh,
kind of the schemes and everything that he's brought into our program. So, um, the fact that, you know, he has such confidence in him and his play, calling ability makes us tremendously confident. So, um, Coach, Dave's has always been coached in the continuing to stay that way. But I'm glad he's able to, you know, focus more on what he needs to focus on. I'm just um, he's kind of a field general in a sense, kind of the quarterback on that side. A lot of people might make things just, you know, the Mike linebacker, we have Cody Simon who does that as well, but um, Caleb's kind of that for our secondary kind of make sure things are clicking on all cylinders. And he's just a very cerebral kid, very smart. And he's able to kind of take control of the defense. So, um, make make the right calls, make the right checks. So, um, he's definitely annoying for the office to deal with, but it makes us better. I would say, in fact, the entire offense, um, it's not like, you know, we're not oblivious to the fact of the caliber of player he is, but, um, you know, as, as an offense, you come out and you expect
to execute on anybody who's lined up a question. So, yeah, I never really thought about like that, but um, we definitely come a, come a long way, um, since my freshman year, um, thankful to the Lord, they've come, you know, these years and come ahead on straight and allow me to, you know, develop into the person that I am now. Um, but so, you know, coming full circle, it is really surreal moments to be in my senior year, pendigants, you know, the people I got my first touch on this, it's really cool. I remember, I remember Kyle getting the yada, he was a ball, he was not supposed to throw, and I also remember getting pushed out at like the one or two year online. So, that's kind of a a bittersweet memory, but, um, it was, it was a great memory. I mean, I have to say yes, if I don't think I should just go down, think I should be playing football. So, um, yeah, my little came in, he kind of has all the intangibles of his
year, you can tell you just love the game, the way he goes about his business. Um, he runs every route to perfection. He's a, he's a, you know, very cerebral kid. Um, and every time he gets on the field, he respects perfection, so, um, he's just got to continue to develop, continue to work, and I'm really excited to see what he's able to do for us. I think, um, I think, you know, it's no secret that he has all the physical capabilities that you would want to receive a really any position you could play, because there's another football field with his athletic ability, but, um, so a lot of it for him was putting together the mental piece of the game, you know, not just understanding what he has on a specific play, but the whole concept, understanding defense, it's all that type of stuff. So, um, there's nothing really that can get you ready for that moment for your first nap in college, because it is different than high school, but, um, you know, once he gets acclimated, gets used to it, I have no, I have no doubts it's going to take off for us and do too many things. I don't know, do you see him face-consuming the team together? Yeah, I mean, it's been a, it's been a huge part of everything that we've
done, been a huge part of. A lot of the reasons why the students came back and everything like that. So, we have a team by the study that we continue to do and continue to grow. I'm kind of just preaches truth of the gospel, to the guys on the team, and um, is definitely permeated throughout the team throughout the years, because, you know, looking back a couple of years ago, there wasn't that many people on the team heavily into their faith, um, and along came a couple special people who really changed the time and the summer program, but, um, you know, the Bible says one man plans and the other man watches, but God ultimately brings the increase. So, um, we're just trying our best to stay at being so Lord, and he's done tremendous things. I'll say kind of the, the, uh, the founders, I would say, of the team's faith. Um, we're definitely, uh, master team for one, Cameron, bad and Xavier Johnson. So, those guys, um, really what I view my responsibility as a captain is just as a, as a person in general, is to push, um, everybody closer to Christ. Um, and, you know, by doing that, I try to walk as close to Christ as I can myself. I'm kind of be that example, be
that life for people to look up to. Um, and I think all the, the basic principles that are found in the Bible and the tribal pursuit Christ, we naturally, naturally make you a better leader, a better person, a better football player in a sense. So, um, I just try my best to anyway him. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, we have specific goals going into every single week. Um, some of our goals for this week is, you know, things can get sloppy in the week one. You see it all across the country. Um, you know, false stars penalty is all this type of stuff. So, we're really just trying to be clean, go out there, play a fast, complete football game, um, clicking on and firing on all of the
things. So, um, by no means are you underestimating it and you're pulling it, we go out there on the field every Saturday, spitting the ball out, whoever lines up the cost for us. So that's just our mentality. So we're going to hold true to that. Yeah, very, very un-series guy, very funny guy, um, kind of lines the room when he walking, when he walks in and he's just, he's a true joy to be around. Um, you can kind of throw will into any setting and he's going to get along with everybody there. So, um, definitely up the, the team chemistry locker room. We love having him around. So we're super glad he's part of this team. A line they were getting back there, looked for him and so forth. And we also expected that in the play, uh, come out of the edge. We like, we knew that they were in the team that they did the honor. Like you mentioned, there was some past attack on the shoes of cards and some things that they used to rush the wheel on the plays. But when the ball did come out, you guys were efficient in the passing game, Virginia, 16, 13, 13, 20, 20, 10, just one allowed with the passing attack to stay that prolific as even the off of the wide room.
Um, the ball has just had to come out quicker and forth, but we have to see that we're doing both in the line. I've just had to do that for the end and they're running faster and quicker. How much do you feel like that game can be a building block for you in terms of continuing to be a big building? How do you feel about that? I feel like each game a building block was a stack each game and so like that. So I just made bigger plays in games. So like that's a, I just thought I was going to go to the block from the mat. They've been doing pretty good. They've been not in stuff like that. New guys, new places and stuff like that. We're all trying to pick up from the injuries and stuff. You guys have the one game that's been swung last year, but how come the flag is the first Oh, we just got a good end getting the box down. We got a good end there. Probably get the safety, get a lot of backers or a DN. It's like that, whatever they need us to do. On your touchdown catch, so this thing like a ball will allow us to come down? They came. I think they're throwing into the wind. Colonel, what's it like? Like I asked you a little bit, did you, did you figure the ball was going to
be coming sooner or later this year? You called him a girl, meaning you know, you've got three big time I've received it made in four or five. It's a figure of bitch. It would find you insignificant, insignificant times. I knew the ball would come my way each and every week. Oh, we have plays for each and all of us. It's a really different know what the difference gives us. Like the give us one thing that we've got a ball goes away from you. It comes to me and stuff like that. So ultimately, it's not in my decision. And yet you're blocking a state of point. So like you're blocking, is that important? Yeah, our blockers from the wide open has been a big emphasis this year. So like that because we like that pretty much all last year. So they've been a big emphasis of block energy from the wide open. And when you look at Vince made on video, what just stands out about there maybe their past with fans. What are you going to be personally up against? They're pretty good. I like going to do play man alive and stuff like that. So we got to win our 101. I thought of them on the perimeter. I'm similar to today. I know you got to get it in the game last year. How similar is there? I'm pretty much the same man covered
all around. They got a little size on the foot and stuff like that. They all probably think we're going to take guys all around. Thank you guys. Five guys, I'd say Bennett pressure. He's walked away. He kind of brings some good energy. Jason Middleton right there too. He kind of oversees Max and Bronco a little bit. That's pretty fun. We all have some pretty good opportunities for catching. Especially practice we're going to make some good. Definitely competitive but a good way. We're all there support of we all know our same thing. We're all going to have to practice. We're working with each other. Hope we totally get better because we all know that we're moving to others.
