They've been using you, you know, that almost at safety role of stuff. How much is it grown? Did you can put your finger on? Yeah, I was growing immensely. I mean, Caleb, he makes a lot of checks. Latham makes a lot of checks. I listen to them. Whatever they need, if I need to cover somebody, I'll go cover anybody. If they need me to do run support, I'll do run support. And it's really what Caleb does, what we do in Latham. It just goes back to the Cogees preparation. And everyone's preparation to give us more flexibility. And it doesn't matter who's in those positions. And we can all play every position, whether it's covering somebody or running and tackling. Did you feel like that was the case before the Oregon game? You're saying what I'm saying? I mean, is that something's been added? It just, you know, rely on a little bit more. Go ahead. Yeah, it did. I was probably playing a Nebraska game, me getting more safety reps. And we had a five week to prepare. So I really learned to play, but a lot more. Even though I knew to play, but I learned a lot more. I was just in the amount, like in debt.
So really just after the Oregon game, it helped me a lot to go back to safety, go to NICU everywhere. Thanks, man. You Dan, hold on. Let me know, are you sure? Do you guys have had a lot of issues of giving up a big plays in the passing game of the first game against Oregon? What do you feel if you guys need to do better this time around to make sure that doesn't happen? Just the same mindset. We got to challenge these receivers. Every dog has their day. Maybe some people didn't have their day back game. But we'll look out there and hopefully change the narrative. And we still play with the same confidence, same technique. And yeah. Bill Rebino, it's a long list this batch. And Denzel obviously had a tough game. And that one, what have you seen from him and how he's responded? Do you get a sense of from him, how he's for this rematch? Oh, yeah, he's super stoked for this rematch. His preparation has been very good. He's always been preparing. Even though it didn't go the way he wanted to go that game. But he just always had his confidence.
And we're going to see a big game out of him this week. And I know you guys wanted to play them in anapolis. But the fact that you get to play them at the Rose Bowl, get a second chance. And people have said, you don't get that very often. How determined are you guys to take advantage of it? We're super, super determined. We watched film. I mean, we've lost a lot of film. The first time we played them, now we got another six games that they played of film to watch. And they've grown a lot as a team. Same as us. We've grown a lot. We're not the same team. We were when we played them week one or week six or whatever. But now we're out there and going to play fast, physical, and everything like that. All right, Jordan, we're going to jump to the Zoom question here from Joey Kaufman. Columbus, this match. Oh, my bad. Not too Joey. Cameron T. Robinson, the athletic. Hey, Jordan, you've moved around a lot in the second day in your career and now kind of getting some many more safety reps. What is it like at this point when Walt or Coach
Mills comes to you and asks you to do some else? And just how much can you lean on the experiences you've had moving around when you're trying to learn something new in the middle of the season? It means a lot. We always talk about this is even being on selfish, whether that's making plays or not making plays or doing your job so another person can make plays. That's kind of what we pride ourselves on. And it's just fun. Me moving around different positions. I'm always up for a new challenge. And a lot of people in the country can't do that. I just hold myself to that standard where I can play any position and excel at it. OK. If anybody else needs a question, let me know. But otherwise, we can go to Austin Moore, the podcast. Jordan, when you were talking about watching film Oregon, which one do you think is more valuable to you watching it against yourself seven games ago, even if you've changed, or the ensuing six games for Oregon? Which one do you put more stock in? Kind of both. For me, I kind of watched what I did, things I did well,
things I didn't do too well against them. And their team is changing, their scheme has changed. Some players have been out those stretch of games. So I really watched the past game we played. And I know they're going to go back to some of the stuff that they liked, of course. And different games like Penn State, maybe Illinois, they run a lot of men. So just watching stuff like that, every game matters. So yeah. Jordan, thank you very much. Thank you. We plan as much. So I just wanted to get more experience under my belt. So I can bring younger guys with me because I've been going a lot. One of those younger guys, we're seeing it out here. It's the first time in this world. It's like, what have you seen from Lille? Because I don't know. I actually don't real forgot about it because he was hurt. Now he's running almost a second man out behind you and Ty. And what have you seen from that? Well, it was a workhorse. He got to stay quiet. He got to work hard. And that's what I love about him. He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's going to get the job done, do a job right. Rarely has any mistakes.
So what would be a successful season? A national championship? A ring, win, all the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't be beat. And we just got to go show it. That mindset, different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year. This year, even more so. You guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like enough as a month. Is that just to keep feeling different? Or is there not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go bigger, go home, and we're not trying to go home. So it's finished big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute. Right? You know what I mean? I mean, you were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that, hey, you guys won a winner national championship. But you played to the 59th minute with the team
that won the national championship last year. Like you're that close. So I'm saying we just work harder. That's kind of a coach makes a saying. Nobody cares. Just work harder. Those won't play Georgia. Same thing. Last play. They went on the win in 90. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year. And hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought that was working harder than you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing? Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought, fresh me here, I was working as hard as I could. But now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. If the stamina is a 60, then the answer to what do you need it to be to be your best?
It is at 75. It's only at 85. 80, 85? I mean, I can, it's all on me. I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny. But I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder. Get the shape. So that's the stamina. You young the hard man. It's been a failure. The idea of a potential is 16 or 17 or 17. You're right. How do you do it? I'm sad about that idea. There's a make you nervous about can you last that long? Do you really need your worries? I'm just going to let that go. I think I can kill that out there. I think I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody, like, online, online. We got to get those younger guys to play, you know. Get that pieces on the D-line and online. And everywhere else. So we can last that long. Speaking of the top light playing, I don't know if any of us were really expected to be playing that next time. Ah, yeah, I did. Unless we were like winning by like a lot.
I thought like, there are no moments you know, I can go sit down or something. But we're playing them big games, like, you know, Notre Dame, too, or those kind of games. Of course I want to be, because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald and the ski guy that came up with you guys a little second? Oh yeah, definitely. K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal. Y'all, you haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has to work ethic. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook, things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to Sixth, or you're three-twenty-seven. He's three-twenty-six. Yeah, he's a very honest. I kind of look at him like my junior, but, you know, K-Mac, he's going to be a great player. He's just got to develop more and get in the playbook. So really a lot on you, older guys. There's that large group of young guys, and then there's the seniors in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We've got to be leaders. Like I said, we've got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They've got to get in there and get some work.
And we've got to get them right, burn all season, so they can play. And not just play, they want to, like, contribute, like, make plays, tackle with sex. He's like, let's stay right about this first. You can do it. You can. It seems like these guys get bigs. Each one of the first-man class is bigger or bigger. And those guys kind of, it doesn't kind of allow you to solve the first. Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of some of the day two when I'm passing on. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard. They're determined to, I would say that. It looks like they're ready to work in the future. How important is that it feels like, because a lot of great defense is that you have big, athletic, defensive tactics who can eat up space, but also move, you know, right to this back. Is that an inquire that maybe for great defense, to have guys like you that have some fault, but also have great team? I think that is definitely. I think if you look at the last couple, not some championship winners, like, team of Northe,
you know, they got two good, uh, detaco, two athletic detacos. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacos. I think that's definitely need if you want to go on that big run, and beat those big teams. If you think about that, they're going to divide by the defense with actors like, what's Georgia, is Jordan Davis and Daniel Carter? What's Michigan? It's Chris Jenkins. Tell them more questions. It is funny how, I mean, you understand it because you play it, but I feel like sometime I don't know. Are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacos. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving forward to 478 and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about those freakiest out there, how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacos, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch it do the drills.
I have tape to you like, look at my film. So I think I'm up there with all those lines. I mean, you're like, you're like a, you become like a artist and it comes in bad young passes. Yeah. I think your legs have your things. I mean, you're going to spring practice. You're not doing as much a 11 on 11. That's gross. How do you work on that? Do you have like a goal in mind? I don't remember how many that last year, but you have a goal in mind. How many do you want to have? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that. But I think he said it on the, I think it counts some of them. And it's some of them where I like just missed it. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's, uh, goes big. And, uh, what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarter of the against. Any way you can is just great for the defense, you know, just that little thing you cover in his eye, you know, he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player. So, so let's something that you really, really have to work on. You can do that with what you can do. It's, it's a theory that's one of the things that you can maybe work on the most. You can do your time here because there are a few guys
that I've seen, like, oh, that passed me two times. We don't have to ask this, but kind of, kind of, kind of expect it for some of those people. I think I just have like a, like, a eye for the ball kind of, I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him like, load up. I just try to get in his ways. And sometimes he just throws it to me. Oh, I'm irritated if you want to be a high state quarterback. So, I'm going to be a bad dumb pass. I mean, they get frustrated, but, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. I should lot of, a lot of different backs, man, to just learn and grow for them. If you got a pick, you're top three, bags, you got a ball right now, one, two, three. Uh, I don't really have a top three, but I'll give you, I'll give you one. I would say, say, Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Although he was injured this year, I like McCaffrey. I appreciate it. Who's the best back in this drive? Best back in this drive. I'll lead that up to y'all. That's y'all, that's y'all decision. What do you think about your own member coach
that has played the best back in the world? Playing well, Howard? What I'm going to remember most? We're a Howard, man. He's just such a great leader, man. It's just like, in moments where, you know, usually a lot of players say, fold, man, he was just always calm and relaxed, man. He, just the leader that he was, man, that's one thing I'm going to remember about him. What do you think of James P. Yeah, he's, shoot. He's going to be really good, man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia. Just that one, two punch with them both as well. They're going to be really good backs. And so James P. was, man, he's smart the way that he goes about his business, man, he's mature. And so, man, he's growing, you know, just as a person in as a player. And so, man, yeah, definitely Ohio State, you know, that running back room is in great hands. I was riding on my dad's looking at his POC spot and put on his top face, and personality, and the coach helped keep that up. It's all in the same way. Yeah, Coach Hartline, man, he's full of energy, man.
And he's creative as well, you know, I'm just learning from him as well, you know, trying to run more outside the backfield, was being able to learn from Coach Hartline. And so, he's definitely creative at what he does, and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well. And so, I think that would do really good. Straight away, he's got a way to play off run. I can't wait to see what strength it takes. Just that intensity, man. And since he got the playoffs, every game, man, is like the intensity got higher and higher. And so, you know, being able, I know in the lead, it's the same thing, even if it's not the playoffs, just every game and the intensity, it keeps getting higher and higher. And so, yeah, you just, I know you got to bring it, you know, each and every day, and come in and work, just like Ohio State. You know, I definitely feel like Ohio State, they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that. You know, I just remember, even before going through this process, I'll talk to a lot of players before that. And they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them, you know, for the NFL. And so, yeah. You should've been here, Richard. I'm not sure if you could talk about it.
You should be able to play off run. Yeah. Yeah, I know I took a couple of days off after the National Championship. And then, shoot, right after that, I'm right in Sample Florida, and I'm right to it. And so, yeah, I think while I trained, I trained at Yo-Murth Performance. I think it's called the House of Athlete or the Compound now. They did a good job, man. They're just bringing us in. And the way they went about training us, man, they did a really good job. I mean, that would be cool, you knew it? The bucking nears. No, I haven't. Do you think it's a city champion? Temple, a champion, nice. It's a nice city, man. Really nice. I think it's really easy for me. The 40, the broad and the vert. Train, you've been on the races, it's an awesome locker. Do you speak to your mentality of when you've got a line back or something in the shaft, bigger than you and you're in ready to score a ball? Yeah. Yeah, no, man. It's really all about technique. And then it's about mindset as well. And so I say, it's for the love of my brother.
It's for the love of Wil Howard. It's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter. Just making sure, first of all, my quarterback doesn't get sacked. And I told Wil I think it was before the first game. I was like, I got your brother. It's like, I said, man, I'm not going to let you get hit. And so I don't know if I gave up a sack. I'm not sure that. But I know if I did, I haven't given up too many. And so, man, it's for the love of my brothers, though, man, making sure that the ball get in their hands, the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed. So you had to hit the practice field later today. What is something you've been working on right now? In my game, you can't really work on this. In all season, I feel like it's more so. You got to put the pads on. You got to go through some inside run. Maybe it's really just continuing run through tackles. And so that's one of the areas in my game. I want to continue to get better. I feel like I did a good job at that my senior year. And so I just want to continue to build on that. So you get all the sides of your team? Yes, I did. Yes, I did.
So people trained on it, you look like a lot of them are out there. You get back in nursing. Have you met them before? I did meet with New Orleans as well. I never got that comparison. Actually, I know I have a Camera shoe. Yeah, man, I have a Camera. Great, great back, man. Just what he does and those 101 matchups, he's dangerous, man. And he's so smooth. He's so smooth as well. I'm not going to lie. He's smooth. So it's your favorite offence? Yeah. Yeah. Inside zone from stack, being able to hit that thing downhill. And I'll say the next one is probably just an option out of the backfield. And man coverage, you're getting on that line backer. And so. Maybe it will be here a couple of years, Jeremiah. You'll have the perfect course. It will be a challenge. It's how you approach it. It's always a good thing. And that pressure is so much attention. Like I said. Yeah, I say to man, the biggest thing is the way
that he carries himself, man, and the way that man, he approaches the game. He comes in with the mindset, you know, he's going to work every single week. You know, every practice, you know, he's working hard, you know, even shoot it. I don't know. I think he had a, every game was a good game for him, man. So, but still, man, he always has the mentality to mindset that, you know, he's going to come in each and every day. He's going to continue to work and get better, man. And so he's definitely man. He's going to be a special player, man. He really is. Man, a lot of ups and downs, man, it's just how you respond to adversity. And I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better. Is this, I'm not having something to lean on now. You know, I remember before I met him, you know, going through those adversity, I had nothing to run to. You know, you can run to people, but they still can't, it's not too much. They can't truly help you. You know, I feel like, you know, I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ.
And so, being able to lean on him, you know, he gives you, in those moments where it's tough, you know, where it's low. And when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about, he gives you, he gives you that peace and comfort. You know, even in those moments, man, where it's so hard that you can't, you can't explain. It's like, man, I'm going through this, but like, how am I still filled with this internal joy? You know, how do I have so much peace in this situation? And so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you. And so, The back of the firm, Peterson Power and Judges, who are Black men? Which aspect could be to those other individuals that you run to, and from being around power and... Um, man, those guys have such a great mentality, man. I just really love their mentality, especially Q as well. You know, I talked about Will Howard, his leadership, but Quincham mentality, man. That boy just, yeah, that boy just gifted. You know, you see, you know, sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like, you know, he should have a negative five yards.
And as soon as you know it, you know, he, that running through somebody, still farming somebody, and shoot, it's a game to 10. And so... You some of the things he does, he just realizes two different things actually. Shoot, I think... Yeah, man, I think it's just like, he's just gifted, man, to be honest. He's just gifted, you know, he's a big back, you know, he's strong, and so, you know, he's able to do those things. Yeah, man, it's definitely, you know, I look at his game, and I want to, you know, at the same time, I want to learn from Quincham. You know, I want to look at his game, and it's like, man, where can I get better at as well? You know, that's the type of player I am. I'm always looking to get better, man. I'm always looking to grow as a player. What are your last moments of dreams? Juel and San. Oh, yeah, he's going to be a great, he's going to be a great quarterback, man. So accurate, and so, he's definitely, man, I know Coach Dez is definitely going to get him right. Just, you know, continuing to grow as a leader, continuing to grow as a player. And so, he's going to be really good for a high state. I know just the quarterback position, I feel like, you know, the quarterbacks in the past, they've definitely been vocal.
And so, I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to ask of Juel and San as well. It's to be that vocal leader and lead the offense and lead the team. Next track. Shoot, man, he has a build like JK Dobbins. And I kind of see them, you know, similar, similarities in their game as well. And I know JK Dobbins, he was a great running back. I feel like he's not talked about his none. A lot, but man, his career here, you watch his highlights is great. I remember before I recruit, before I committed here, I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every, every one of his years here, like four or five times. And so, man, he was such a great back. And I feel like, you know, when I see JK Dobbins, when I see James people, I see similarities to both of their games, I feel like they play the same. And so, appreciate you all.
Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you. Well, I got coming in last year. I knew the role, so I just tacked Eric Dave, really the same way. I think I got a lot bigger. I'm like 240. I'm like 240-4 right now. Last year I played
it like 236-237. What does it feel like at 244 or a belly? You feel like almost a different machine out there. Yeah. What does it feel like to be running around out there like you are but with more and more back? I just feel like I'm like like like more downhill like stronger like I'm taking all blocks better. It's a big knee. Maybe that's not the correct term but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year and stuff. What do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more? This is going to get ready to just play 30 more snaps. How would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-stand point? I'm looking forward to it. I'm ready for it. My thing. I'm ready for it. The Texas opener is a rematch in the so-to-state but it's not really two different teams compared to the last time you all played and stuff. How has that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the where an opener of that magnitude? Yeah, with an opener
like that we've been emphasizing it a lot. We know we got coming so we know we got to do what we're prepared for it. I think Riley ready to play right now. He advanced freshman like he ended up hitting a buck. He stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy like he saw line to saw line to him. I said you're ready. What was that process like during last season? Could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready? Because every team needed for you? Yeah because that's pretty much what my role was. Whenever I was needed I had to step up so I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year. When you say ready is it more a physical thing? Is it a mental thing? When I say ready I think it's pretty much like everything physically, mentally, mostly. I think I'm there. How different is that feeling this year of the last year? How different is that response? I feel like it's a way bigger responsibility
with me having to step up this year but I kind of go about it the same way like last year I was attention over to everything I did. I feel like this year is going to be the same thing. It's probably a little bit more. And what word? I don't know how many words you want. I say describe like when you think of me you think of like a bullet like a silver bullet. I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm always on the ball. That's how I like to play and think. No I ain't ain't got to be my nickname but. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm a more questions-people. How does that fit the queue? And what are you enjoying about and how do you like that kind of style? I think it fit me because I just like the defense. I feel like we got like you said we got a lot of freedom and we're moving around a lot a lot of the terms is
like no I don't know I don't really not answer that. That's okay. You can go on your instincts a little bit more maybe. That's not so thinking of too much. I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on but it's like I just like it's defense. I like the position of defense. I like what you got going on. What was it sad when CJ left the ring? Now I wanted to say that I was kind of like happy fun. Like yeah. That's what you want. No. No. All right. No that's my dog. So yeah. Kind of missing a little bit but yeah I'm happy fun though. Well don't thank you. Go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own. How much do you feel that is a guy who certainly contributed last year but will be in this bigger role and a lot more some of your classmates? Yeah I do feel like yeah I do feel like I did win a natulash but like you said my role wasn't
same as how's going to be this year so yeah I definitely want to go get another one experienced that like feeling maybe on the field a lot more plays. That's great. Oh Bill thank you very much. I mean I feel like I just need to take you right now. Sometimes like basketball I want to be on that just like defend but you know I got to stay and stay square in some box. Exactly. Yeah that's a great question. I mean I feel like these two can answer that for the beer right now. I think KJ and Hero can answer that. I don't know what to say about that. What do you guys think? I go against every day you know this man is strong. Ready? I'm talking about like you get the basketball key like you know. You sound like you can just see what this is. He really has a really fast leg just the overall shape that he has. And he got the grip right in his head. He doesn't give up on the play and like you said he's going to go in and watch the film.
He's doing everything better than you can see the 100 beer line. From like this one he's now got this 19-digit improvement at the game. Hero can you just follow us around all the way there? He's sound like a coach man. He's sound like a coach. The chip Kelly's in for exchange your mind about maybe like the idea of tack over his jargon because obviously his offensive predilection was for like offensive line play. He's a great game. Has you been a part of you settling in the guard? That's um I want to say maybe I don't know but I mean when I'm when I'm pretty sure you got the job I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo I can run with the tempo you know I mean I'm I'm playing basketball all life instead of football and I feel like just the fast pace off and so we're running really fits the guys we have right now I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw a football like 65 yards but can you kick a football 75 yards like Lincoln? Probably question Lincoln what was your question? How is your um your roommate?
He's a blessing man I can't complain um he's a great guy His name's Lincoln Keen Holtz Oh he's a cleaner I think we're both really clean that's why we kind of take each other's roommates because we're very clean and we don't like our rooms really messy Well it's true though it's true they're both pretty clean so Luke are you still a cross-training at TACO? Some or have you just been all guard this break? Oh so far I've been all guard um I really don't know like I said I'm taking it practice I practice I could end up being back at TACO I could not but you know I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next one we've shown. What do you mean? Yeah oh that mean a lot um you know you put a lot of work in to play here and it's been a dream just from being in Ohio kid is I'm from Ohio kid's perspective it's I mean that's the biggest wish possible I would have I would say that's it'd be pretty cool What was it like just last year at first game getting on the field for the first time?
It didn't like this is gonna be a weird answer but it could feel like I was playing a game if that makes sense I hit I was pretty locked in I felt like just no anxiousness no stress no nothing really I just went in that first game was like shoot out here now it's time to roll you know It didn't really hit me I was like it didn't even hit me after but my mom was like what'd you feel there and if like getting out there at Indiana I just like honestly yeah I don't know I felt less nervous I didn't high school and it makes no sense Um a lot I mean I'm learning from Josh Ann Austin I think prior to one of my biggest role models here is my bigger big brother my first game over here. So I'm up Adean? I don't want to do okay yeah no yeah yeah so yeah Adean Austin those are my guys man I'm even miles to I mean all three of them that's those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well on and I'm excited to see where they where they can get to I'm excited to play on the field with them oh yeah you know it's been really helpful you know just keep in my mind just settled and straightforward on the next play
it's a great question um like I said I mean that I just need to say consistent in my work I think that's the biggest thing for me is just ain't consistent in worry about the next play so you got it from the guy you were in the place yeah wow that's weird yeah I mean I guess they didn't want to get my nerves up but like I was ready I mean I did I took most of the ones that solved camping I mean I was already I was pretty much it yeah I wasn't really nervous to start the game yeah what was his advice please yeah he said you got it you mean you're going against Tylee and Kyle every day in practice I mean this is not different almost different are you now both you and the two starts in the game as a as a player you know having having that under your belt um yeah I'm more confident I know what's going on I can see like I can see what's going on with the defense I know what's going on I know what's coming I mean I understand the game's a lot better than what it was like I don't say last year but you have to up to what fast the start yeah yeah yeah playing with that
I mean if we get out early it's get the defense change in place it's changing their defense you start fast I mean they're trying to get the call in the play but you start faster I'm not going back but trust a lot of sessions yeah of course they isn't pretty much said though you deserve the play man you know let's come forward with what were you expecting this week in terms of your role um where they need me if it's left right wherever it's I didn't go in I'm going to talk to you in front of me I'm going to play in check um took me back to high school days but I should back at high school it wasn't really you ran the ball a lot really didn't do in passes but it was fun change you got my made my feet better I would say how confident you feel like you could play there if they if they want me there I'll guess I'll play there I mean they need me they need me also in the illness that's up through the office of the line room a lot of times coaches and players that said like I was still relying for the groom you know getting you experience among others
what was that like for you and double-dipping playing some tag or playing some guard the same practice um it was based like a group effort like for me you know we had guys out and we just had to go back practice um all five guys there's wherever they were playing we just got to go how much of that accelerate your development like that time with the ones you were actually doing they really said it did um I was jumped in there I didn't really know so we get like one or two practices with practices but like after those I was like you're out of good you're in my confidence grew um yeah it seemed like you're was sort of a settling in practice process for you and the Akron game maybe play got better if the game went on it and really do especially in the ground game things seem to take on but was there a moment when it clicked on the field for you like was there nerves and then a time of settling in I guess how take me through kind of that first game mentally yeah um first game obviously you go have nerves for your first time starter but then like after the first couple plays meaning you have nerves
naturally that's first couple play that was good I was rolling also it's a weird you were trying to try to find out how to say it was also the first start yeah um you yeah it's but like I prepared well um and camp and practice all week and I was I was ready um yeah I have two multi-year starters I did a lot I mean I couldn't ask them hey what we got here but I was prepared well I mean I was telling Jimmy and said it's like a way our class happy emotional excited it was just that's a guide from Ohio what does it mean to start at the game um it was always my dream to come here and play and start and having that like me I just got to keep going keep building those days and go games and keep building but what a much younger Austin don't you know I don't think even I told like me I asked my younger self even
committed I wouldn't believe that now I have a couple of starts yeah awesome has this happened faster than you I guess you're technically a softball player's a richer question no I knew that year two I was gonna see you some playing time now starting week one year two I didn't would see that but like I was ready in spring ball like a new I was going I was going to play some softball but what does it mean to you to it's not only get the opportunities to play but it's like you play well enough now coaching staff trust you to be able to put it out there whatever the situation was like that so early on the year two um I guess it shows like my preparation my hard work and just everything I put into this and I just finally show up on a field there a moment the top season in the end of the spring and you can't really realize that you could play at this high level power with the ones you know if you need to yeah uh the definitely was in training camp
means blocking highly can tie every day like it feels it feels a lot of confidence and doing it well and not like getting balled or anything so there's defensive tag wasn't that was the hero in Jason Moore and Taiwan all those guys me pretty much anyone on the deepened line you just feel it's all the time so and Kay mag as well so yeah he also you've heard a lot of my work collected how about the stability and the great thing about how much can he help you he helped me a quite a lot and I'm proud that he's our starting center not someone else's but um I mean he's like the captain of the line he's another voice on the line with guys like Josh Fryer and Josh Simmons dining Tiger that means another voice and another captain look way so having that and I'm with this much experience help yeah a lot he can tell you like before the play was going on like how to block someone like
what you need to do and like that's a lot Tiger talking about how calm he is how much does that benefit you have a guy who's kind of been there and it makes us more calm like especially me and Tay as a first star so like we were up here with with Seth like he brought us down and we were like fine like our emotions weren't high we were settling is that like something he tells you is that something you pick up on by how he's acting how do you kind of mean sense what he's trying to say about how he's acting and what I mean him when we're on the side of him both Josh Donnie like he was telling us like hey we're cool like we got it but it's pretty much like everyone oh cool group how much do that as a first time starter how much did you add that so me and a lot and that was my first time ever using high pads we didn't use the high pads in high school but I mean you can say like try to remember the defense you can just come on a silent bring up a play and get help up really not right
probably the first or second but after that I thought we say oh seven great awesome thank you very much it seems like training part is a part of but it's not the whole thing they're getting bigger it's like the culture part of the part of the entire part how much of the fact reduce that in a part it took your change it's it's also it's a lot and I mean it's and I feel like you can't be able to transform your body like I like I have like people here come and do that without having that mentality part with it it's like we we always talk about competitions here our culture is fight so we're always here to compete and I feel like that is just that's what gets you in this mindset when you talk about that transformation can you just give us a little sense maybe with numbers or body fat or like you're what do you do with the weight group how big is that transformation? I don't have really specific numbers but I just like it's more just like I can just I feel like
feeling when I'm playing like I remember how I felt to play when I just got here and now I know how how it feels to play like like like just today like it feels physically different on my body it's like it's just it's I'm getting used to that makes sense I can't imagine feeling like that Kadea also said about you that you are just a completely different guy from last year do you hear the word this year's club? Let's get it done yeah do you feel like you weren't at that place mentally? I think I was but I think I had some I would say like kind of like confidence issues like I was just but you know I mean I work past it and I know I know why I am and I know I can be here so if you have confidence issues how do you get through it? Is it yourself? Is it teammates? there's somebody in your family that makes you believe that you can do it?
I know I can do it it's not like that's those are those are all it's on the past now Did the past of play time in the very obvious opportunity guys had to step up the deal with the other business that helped you crank you know that confidence issue there because it's now a demo and so your opportunity? So kind of it's just like just I mean it's just just being here like I feel like being here every day working with the guys every day it's just like you know you become this person that you might not have like you might not have like felt like you were before that but like coming here working every day stacking these days like like you know I mean I just feel like I realized who I am and I know what I can do now I knew I knew I could play here I mean it's just it was like the
like I just I don't know how to explain I just like I've always known I could play here it's just I'm just like let's go like I'm ready like I'm ready to attack with our guys the room to help you to figure that out for sure I think KJ was a big influence tie Hamilton tie league they all they all helped me a bunch last year kind of just pushing through you know I really plan as much so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt so I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been through a lot of those younger guys we're seeing it out here it's the first time I've heard all these last years what have you seen from Will because I feel like last year we all forgot about it because he was hurt now he's running you know almost a second man up behind you and tied what have you seen you remember well as a workhorse he he goes stay quiet you go and work hard and that's all I love about he focuses he don't really talk much he's going to get a job done do a job right really has any mistakes so what what it would be is successful season a national championship I ring when all the games
we don't want to lose anything we got a mindset that we can't be beat and we just gotta go show it so that mindset different seems like you guys expect the national championship every year this year even more so you guys have all come back for this you guys have all decided like enough is it not because that is you can feel the difference or is there not really any difference it's just the same word it's definitely a difference everyone working harder we noticed our last run like we most of us don't have any years after this so we got to go go bigger going home and we not trying to go home finished big we know what you guys think of Michigan but when you look at what they did they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute right you know what I mean I mean you you were right there something goes a little different you guys could have been one that game against them does that tell you anything about like that hey you guys want to win a national championship but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year like you're that close so I'm saying we just like work harder
this that's kind of coach makes of saying you know nobody cares just work harder like those you know when we played Georgia it's the same thing yeah last last play you know they went on the win in 90 so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season I think we'll be fine how frustrating is that you're that close against the last two national title uh of course as you know it's frustrating but you can't change the outcome you can't really dwell on it you just got to you know come back and work harder do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change as that is you get older you kind of learn I thought I was working harder than you always find out there's a little more you could have been doing yeah definitely I mean that's how that's what growing up is basically in college and I thought freshman year I was working it's hard as I could but now I look back at it I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now so just to learn anything 80 85 I mean I can it's all
on me I just I think it's a little higher I was just trying to be funny but I mean it's all on me I just got to run harder in shape I think I think I think I definitely can last I was just you know we got to get the young guys to come along with us we can't play 50 snaps again that's just too much on our bodies uh just everybody like online D-line we got to get those younger guys to play you know get that pieces on the D-line and the online and everywhere else so we can last that long run speaking of my life plan I'm gonna snap to here I don't know if any of us were really expected oh yeah I did unless we were like winning by like a lot I thought like there are no moments you know I can go sit down or something but we're playing them big games like you know
Notre Dame too or North those kind of games of course I want to be because I know I can contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I get the job done what stands out about Kaden McDonald is he got the kid you guys in a second oh yeah definitely K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal y'all you haven't really seen it yet but in practice he shows all the time he's just he's just he's grown right now he has to work I think he just has to get you know in the playbook things like that you guys are about the exact same size you're both listen to six three you're three 27 he's three 26 yeah he's I kind of look at him like my my junior but you know K-Mac he's gonna be a great player he's just got to develop more and get into playbook so really a lot on you older guys there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well yeah definitely we've got to be leaders um like I said we got to have them play this year we can't just play all the snaps they got to get in there and get some work and we got to get them right during the all season so they can play and not just play they want to like contribute like make plays tackles sex
you kind of while you yourself yeah they're definitely some big dudes um and they all work hard I'm really seeing much it's only a day two and I'm passing on but throughout the workouts they've been working hard you know they they're determined I just say that and it looks like they're ready to work immediately I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last uh a couple of national championship winners are like team of north they you know they got two good uh detacled two athletic detacles look at Georgia two athletic detacles so I think that's definitely need if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams really if you think about this
if they want to fight by the defense because actors like what's Georgia Jordan Davis and James Carter let's miss you again it's Chris Jenkins tell them more questions how I mean you understand because you play it but I feel like some time I don't know are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to I think so uh I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles yeah like in the combine just now you see in like those guys they're moving four to four seven eights and things like that so we'll see and when you think it when you think about this freakish out like how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player you watch that and say yeah that's me yeah definitely I think I'm top-notch when it comes to detacles but I don't want to you know get a big head but you know I watch it come on I watch it do the drills I have tape here you're like you're looking like my film so I think I'm up there with all those things you know do you become like a artist you think your legs have your things I mean you're going
you can see Frank practice you're not doing as much a weapon on the weapon do you have like a goal one months I don't remember how many I've last year but you have a goal one I mean as many as I can have I think I have more than that but I think he said it on me he said it on me I think they didn't count some of them and it's some of them where I like just listed so but I think we work on drills matching the hand I think that's uh goes big and uh we do as a deal on you know just affecting the quarterback is anyway you can it's just great for the defense you know just that little thing covering his eye you know he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player so let's something that you really really have to work on you that's one of the things that you've maybe worked on the most you can bring your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen like oh that past you did it we don't have to ask for the style I think I just have like a like a eye for the ball kind of I kind of just look at the quarterback and just I see him I load up I just try to get in his ways and sometimes he just throws it to me I mean they get
frustrated by you know we're team you know we're just good but I should lot a lot of different backs man they just learn to grow for them I don't really have a top three but I'll give you I'll give you one I would say sake one Gibbs and I like McCaffrey auto he was injured this year I like McCaffrey best back in this draft I lead out of the yard that's y'all that's y'all decision playing well Howard when I'm going to remember most we're a Howard man he's just such a great lead such a great leader man it's just like in moments where you know usually a lot of players they fold man he was just always calm and relaxed man he just the leader that he was man that's one thing I'm gonna remember about him
yeah he's shoot he's gonna be really good man he's um coast lock I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia just that one two punch with them both as well they're gonna be really good backs and so James people's man he's smart the way that he goes about his business man he's mature and so man he's growing you know just as a as a person in as a player and so man yeah definitely Ohio State you know that running back room is in great hands yeah coach coach hard line man he's full of energy man and he's creative as well you know I'm just learning from him as well you know I'm trying to run more outside the backfield was being able to learn from coach hard line and so he's definitely creative at what he does and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well and so I think they'll do really good just intensity man and since he got the playoffs um every game man it's like the
intensity got you know higher and higher and so you know being able I know in the lead it's it's the same thing even if it's not the playoffs just every every game and intensity it keeps getting higher and higher and so yeah you just I know you got to bring it you know each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State you know I definitely feel like Ohio State they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that you know I just remember even before going through this process I'll I'll talk to a lot of players um before then and they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them you know for the NFL and so yeah yeah yeah I know I took a couple days off after the um national championship and then shoot right after that I'm right in right in Tampa Florida and I'm right to it and so um yeah I think while I trained I trained at your worth performance I think it's called the House of Athlete or the compound now they did they did a good job man they're just bringing us in and the way they went about training us man they were
they did a really good job the bucking years no I haven't breathing in the city Tampa Tampa Tampa nice this night it's a it's a nice city man really uh the 40 to broad and avert yeah yeah no man uh it's really all about technique and then it's about mine said it's well and so um I say you know it's for the love of my brother it's for the love of will highway it's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter just making sure you know um first of all my quarterback doesn't get sacked um and I I told will I think it was before the first game I was like I got your brother it's uh I said man I'm not gonna let you get hit you know um and so I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack I'm not sure that um but I know if I did I haven't given up too many and so man it's for the love of my brother's though man making sure
that the ball getting their hands you know the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed in my game uh you can't really work on this you know in all season I feel like it's more so you know you got to put the pads on you got to go through some inside run you know maybe uh it's really just continuing run through tackles and so that's I feel like that's one of the areas in my game you know I want to continue to get better I feel like I did a good job of that my senior and so I just want to continue to build on that yes I did yes I did uh I did meet with um New Orleans as well um I never got that comparison actually um I know I have a Camera shoe yeah man I have a Camera great great back man um just what he does and knows 101 matchups he's dangerous man and he's so smooth he's so smooth as well I'm not going to lie he's smooth yeah um inside zone from stack being able to hit that thing downhill and I say
the next one it's probably just an option route out of the backfield you know and man and man coverage you're getting on that line backer and so yeah I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself man in the way that man um he approaches the game he comes in with the mindset you know he's going to work every single week you know every practice you know he's working hard you know um even shoot I don't know every good I think he had every game was a good game for him man and so but still man he always has the mentality to mindset that you know he's going to come in each and every day he's going to continue to work and get better man and so he's definitely man he's going to be a special player man he really is man a lot of ups and downs man it's just how you respond to adversity and I feel like that's
something that God has definitely helped me to do better is this um not have something to lean on now you know I remember before I met him you know going through those adversity I had nothing to run to you know you can run to people but they still can't it's not too much they can't truly help you you know I feel like you know I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ and so being able to lean on him you know he gives you in those moments where it's tough you know where it's slow and um when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about um he gives you he gives you that peace and comfort you know um even in those moments man where it's so hard that you can't you can't explain it's like man I'm going through this but like how am I still filled with this internal joy you know how do I have so much peace in this situation and so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you and so um man eight those guys have such a great mentality man oh my just really love their mentality
especially um Q as well you know I talked about Will Howard his leadership but Quench I'm mentality man um that boy just yeah that boy just gifted you know you see you know sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like you know he should have a negative five yards and as soon as you know it you know he that running through somebody step on him somebody and she that's again a 10 and so I think yeah man I think it's just like he's just gifted man to be honest he's just gifted you know he's he's a big back you know he's strong and so um you know he's he's able to do he's able to do those things and so yeah man it's definitely you know I look at his game and I want to you know at the same time I want to learn from Quenchon you know I want to look at this game is like man where can I get better at as well you know that's the type of player I am I'm always looking to get better man I'm always looking to grow as a player saying oh yeah he's gonna be a great but he's gonna be a great quarterback man he's so so
accurate and so um he's definitely man I know Coach Dez definitely going to get him right just you know um container grow as a leader container grow as a player and so he's going he's gonna be really good for how I stay uh he's that I know just the quarterback position um I feel like you know the quarterbacks in the past they've they've definitely been vocal and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to um ask them truly and saying as well it's to be that vocal leader and lead the um and lead to offense and lead to steam sure man he has he has a build like JK Dobbins and um I kind of see them you know similar similarities in their game as well and I know JK Dobbins he was a great running back I feel like he's not talked about his none um a lot but man his career here you watch his highlights is great I remember um before I recruit before I committed here I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every every um one of his years here like four or five times and so man he was such a great
back and um I feel like you know um when I see JK Dobbins when I see um James people I see similarities to both of their games I feel like they play the same and so I appreciate you all y'all be going
you all I got coming in last year I knew we're all so I just attack every day really the same way it's taking advantage very rough physically how different are you weight wise body wise on that from the year ago um I think I got a lot bigger I'm like 240 you know like 244 right now last year I played it like 236 to 37 what does it feel like a 244 or a belt you feel like an almost a different machine out there yeah what does it what does it feel like to be run around out there like you are but with more uh more back I just feel like I'm like like like like more downhill like stronger like I'm taking all bloods better it's big yeah is it daunting uh maybe that's not the correct term but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year instead what do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more this is gotta get ready to just play 30 more snaps so
but are you are you how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8-stand point yeah I'm looking forward to it I'm ready for it my I'm ready for it I think the Texas opener is a rematch so to say but it's not really two different teams compared to the last time y'all played and stuff but how's that enhanced uh this camp for you and this team getting ready for they were an opener with that magnitude yeah with an opener like that we've been um we've been emphasizing it a lot and we know we got coming so we know we gotta do we prepared for it um I think Riley ready to play right now he he advanced freshmen like he ended he in the book he stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy like he saw like the saw line too or like you said you're ready right you know you're ready what was that process like during last season could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready for whatever the team needed for you yeah because that's pretty much what my role was just whenever I was needed I had to step up so I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year
when you say ready is it more a physical thing is it a mental thing when I say ready I think it's pretty much like everything physically mentally mostly I think I'm there a different um ask the one more time how different is that responsibility I feel like it's uh it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year but I kind of go about it the same way like last year I was intentional with everything I did I feel like this year it's gonna be the same thing it's probably a little bit more somebody and what work how's anybody worked you watching uh I say describe like now I say like when you think of me you would think of like a like a bully like a
silver bullet but I'm really a bully I'm always on the ball that's how I like to play a thing no I ain't ain't gotta be my nickname but so I'm saying that the thing to be that's all oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah that's it all right come on for the first question for the nutritious style and how it's free I mean how does that fit you and what are you enjoying about bullying in that kind of style um think it fit me because I don't know I just like the defense I feel like we got like you say we got a lot of freedom and we're moving around a lot a lot of the terms is like no I don't know I don't really know how to answer that that's okay does it you can go on your instincts a little bit more baby and it's not so thinking of too much I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on but it's like I just like it's deep I like culture pretty deep because I like what you got going on uh now I wanted to much sad I was kind of like happy for you yeah that's what you want no that's my dog I'll say yeah kind of missing a little bit but yeah
I'm happy for you though I don't think go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own yeah how much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year but will be in this bigger role and along with some of your your classmates yeah I do feel like um yeah I do feel like I did win a nattie last year but like you said my role wasn't same as how's gonna be this year so yeah I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling maybe on the field a lot more place okay oh Bill thank you very much I'm so unique offense compared to NFL especially with the way he uses receivers how do you anticipate your role changing it how do you view the offense from a receiver perspective specific yeah um I mean I think he likes to really push the ball down the field um he likes to be balanced he likes to give different looks to a difference you know we're gonna not to try to get too much into it but you know we're gonna use some motion move some guys
around and things of that nature um I think for myself I feel comfortable playing any of the positions that is that is asked whether it's the slot the outside positions and um unique part about our offense is I don't think necessarily you play the X or the Z because the pit on the formation of the hash you can be the opposite you could you can be the X but then you're to the field now you're the Z so you got to really learn uh the entire concept and know where you're out of in the field which I think makes everybody smarter players because you don't pigeonhole yourself I just play X you know I'm only know this position like you get in two minutes you're the Z now you got to know what to do you may have the clear out router you may have the backside dig like you got to know uh what you're doing so I think he doesn't just say like we're going to do this offense he's really trying to create an offense that hits our personnel really well that that field boundary thing yeah that's the thing in college but it seems like it's more to you to clip is that is that something you're used to seeing another offense has it been yeah definitely I mean I think if if I'm on the left hash like technically um I'm the X you know I'm in the boundary but if
we're on the right hash I'm still on the left side I'm really the Z in the concept because I'm to the field I'm to the strength of the tie-down so um I've been in offenses like it's similar like that before and um you know I just think he he one thing I think that's really stood out as the compliments of our routes that we have so far um I feel like we have a chance to really run similar stems but there's different routes off those stems and things like that which I think for receiver like myself who uh you get you know a really good look at DBs and they study your film they study your splits like having routes uh that look the same but break off a different different angles is extremely important because it feels like you have some versatility in your bag to go out with versus like you got this hitch again you're back side like that's all you got you know I mean so um yeah he's just been a really good player's person to work with and he's been really communicated with the leaders and how we want this offense to look like in some of the ideas that we may have as well so it's it's been a really uh cool transition you talk about the transitions
you've heard offense in three years probably your fourth and six years yeah how do you not kind of build up some barriers yeah man I gotta do this again right um I think you know human nature is is always um a factor in whatever you do in life but I think I try to make a conscious choice of coming in with a new year mentality each and every year and I think it's easy because we've had so many changes and um it's been great working with Marcus and Jaden and Jeff and Sam all of everybody like it's it's been great with working with all the quarterbacks and um I just have a mentality and not really being complacent like I try to really focus on the things that I I can come back better at this year and I've been working my my butt off to do that so um I think the easy thing and when I was younger you're like dang like you just want that consistency you know I mean like you want that um something you could depend on but like life isn't life isn't always like that so um I've
been reinvigorated because of just the energy that DQ brings into our building each and every day and and the coaches as well like it's fun competing you know what I mean and sometimes I could get lost in the grind but um I think the reason why you make it here at this level is because you you fall in love with the competition of it and I think the competition breathes the success because that is really where you the iron truly sharpens iron so you know other guys are going to make plays but when you get excited to go in there and and know that um the next day we're going to go right back after the defense so um for myself I'm just looking forward to continue to grow with the quarterbacks that we have um I mean year six now which is extreme blessing and um leader one of the leaders in our room and I just try to take the bull by the horns with that and so uh that's really been my focus and uh you know I'm excited for another year to us it's looked like you're being more vocal on the sideline to help young guys definitely something you decided this off
season or uh I think that's uh been a part of my maturation process as a leader um I've always seen myself as somebody that was a uh a leader by example um but from coaches and other teammates I've had over the years um guys like to hear what I have to say for whatever reason sometimes you know and I think the biggest thing where I've tried to figure out where I fit in with my vocal leadership is I never wanted to be like a dictator you know I mean I never wanted to tell guys what to do or or be a yellow or things like that like when I say something I wanted to have power I wanted to have meaning and I hope you know the guys would feel the same way if they were to ask them that question um because I want to see all these guys win man like it's it's hard to make it in this league and staying a career and so anyway I could help the receivers the DBs I'm talking to some alignment Johnny who's who's rehabbing his foot you know what I mean like everybody has a role and everybody has a different story and path and so if I could share what I've been through my testimony to help them or uh do things that kind of slow down the process I'm gonna try to do that because um we need
everybody from the rookies to the ten year vets to to make this thing work so um more so I try to speak to what I what I know and and really those honest conversations that I try to have with guys what they know I'm coming from a good place and I think I'm not the type of guy where I'm just gonna want talking at them like if they see something like I could take a coaching point from Luke McCaffrey I could take a coaching point from Deami from Jahan from uh Marcus from anybody you know like I think that's what makes you a great player when you can really uh be coachable from anybody and and not take it from a personal standpoint hi are you good um going back to what you were saying about Cliff and how was he as a teacher in teaching all this yeah I mean I think he does a really great job of making things simple first and foremost he doesn't over coach and I think that's the trust that he has in our group and his in his coaches our position coaches to um fill in the details so we'll have an install meeting and um it'll be a good amount of time but then
our position coaches will have time and we'll make it specific to that position and so um then we'll come in and have a walkthrough um and then after that we'll have another walkthrough and so I don't think there's been a time where I've come out here and I'm kind of worried about what I got you know what I mean and when you get into certain offices there could be so many details where you could be overwhelmed and I think then it forces it kind of separates guys in a sense that like one guy may study more than another guy but when you have these these sessions that we have where we're having an installs in the morning we're having two walkthroughs and then we're coming on the field and doing it like I think you notice a lot of guys are playing a lot faster and more confident because he's keeping it simple but also he's very particular in in what he's expecting but it's not a lot so um there's not a pressure of to get it right but at the same time um you know it's expected of you and and you know you're going to have the tools given to you to be successful out there on the field and this offseason just the totality of change from front office players coaches the turf field
I mean what what does that been like for you just to see what's going on? It's been fun um you know I think from uh Mr. Harris and the entire ownership group down to uh Adam Peters down to DQ down to Jada who he drafted and bringing in Marcus and Jeff and all those guys and down to leaders we have on our team I think it was extremely specific on the way they tried to build this thing going into this year um first having the right people bringing in leaders bringing in guys who love to compete first thing that DQ said when he came here was and his first meeting like if you love to compete this is going to be the place for you and I love it you know I mean I love bags and and going at it with the DBs every day like the little mundane stuff can seem a little boring but that's I think that was the the where you make the gains during the offseason where you're really focused on I'm hey like I'm gonna I'm gonna give all I got for this day and I'm gonna get better and then I'm gonna I'm gonna learn from the film and come back tomorrow and ready to do it again and he also understands like the the benefits of having breaks like he's given us breaks we've had
you know weeks off here in the other week and compose ourselves but then come back and give it all we got you know what I mean and when you got a coach that understands the physicality of an entire season where you guys do need breaks by the same time we're going to get after it uh it makes it fun as a leader because you can take that to your room and be like yo we got these we got this week you know I mean that's extremely important but you know we have this little break coming up um where you're gonna get your your mind and your body and your soul right so um coming into this season I'm I'm really optimistic of what we can be this year and I think it started with the foundation that uh the ownership group and the entire staff has built and now it's on myself as a leader to continue to hone that in into the locker room but I think it's great because we have so many great leaders from all across the league uh who have won and had we got Bobby Wagner in there you know I mean I asked a hall of fame or so like you know being able to have kind of guys like that that you can lean on that can sometimes take over that leadership role where it doesn't fall on one person I think it's uh uh extremely refreshing and knowing that everybody's on the same page and
the message is the same um allows you to go out there with confidence and always expect to know Terry you seem to spend many of your off seasons learning about things beyond football hobbies what have you did you do anything to this off season so far to hobbies or increase your knowledge of the world around you uh let's see the question um play a lot of golf uh as they just keeps my competitive juices flowing um uh planning the wedding um that's going well and uh I mean I've just been grinding like honestly you know I mean I've been hungry uh this off season like uh I started working out you know pretty early and uh you start to see guys like coming back and it's just fun to like to be here and competing and feeling like everybody's on the same page you know what I mean like and so for me I'm a grind every off season but just this one just feels like it's the start of something you know new and special and the foundation of is extremely important and to be a part
of that to have a hand in that um you know it's it's an honor you know and I put a lot of expectation on myself to come out here and and be the guy that I know I'm capable of and also like take him the next step and uh being somebody that our quarterback that can trust and and believe in so um this off season was pretty simple for me um it was just really about you know working and and and grinding and getting better you talked about Jayden before and you're anything so far I know we haven't seen everything but in terms of his his arm strength the throws he's making anything surprising so far about the types of his ability in that regard definitely uh I think after the second or third crosser that he threw I started telling receivers like hey you gotta get your head around you know I mean because again each quarterback throws the ball differently and sees the field differently so sometimes on crossers a lot of quarterbacks may like to see you cross the ball and get into that open zone over there if it's man flattened off they like to see you get open where him he has a really good anticipation over the middle of the field where he can make those throws and give you a chance to catch and run and uh he he's really accountable too like we had
a play today where he felt like he missed me and you know it's not a big deal at all you know I mean him and I could talk to those things and there's been a play that I've talked to him about I could do a better job but again like that open that open form of communication from a rookie I think is it's very rare and I think it speaks to the confidence he knows who he is but he's also not afraid to say when he's wrong and he knows he needs room to improve but his touch on the D ball is it's amazing um you know I love getting extra reps with practice after practice with him we're just catching the top end of a deep ball as big for me you know I mean I get to track the ball over my shoulder and as big for him to be able to get used to dropping the ball in the bucket but he just naturally has an ability to throw the ball he sees the windows really well and now he's just you know continue to get adjusted to the speed in the past rush I think he's these reps that he's getting our unbelievable during 11 on 11 because he's getting the field pain and Allen and DA and Cleveland Farrow like we got some dogs up there who are gonna come after him you know what I mean and we got some great guys up front who are gonna protect them and so these reps I feel like
are even better than just seven on seven seven on seven I think he could do in the sleep to be fair like he throws the ball really well but when you get this 11 on 11 in two minute drill you're putting them in game like situations and I'm looking them in his eye I'm like we play a real ball now like we we we playing you know what I mean and you just see no no anxiousness in his game in his demeanor which is extremely exciting and and then you know he's extremely lighthearted and he's always smiling so he's joking with lime and D line he's just cool with everybody and like I said like for a rookie quarterback to come in like that where guys are gravitating to him and he's not afraid to be who he is that's dope I think he has a bright future for himself the tough losses the tough seasons can weigh on a player sure you're entering the prime of your career J.A. kind of mentioned it last year all he cares about is winning he wants to win now is there a sense of urgency you obviously always want to win yeah knowing that you know you're you're getting to the prime of your career like you want to win now yeah I think that's a fair question I think you know you start to evaluate when
you I'm in year six and you know it's how fast it goes and I try not to put the cart before the horse we're looking too far ahead by the same time you do want to win you want to be a part of a winning culture and have a chance to win the Super Bowl and the playoffs and all those things that's why we we do this personally and I'm just excited with being a part of a organization in a environment where now like everybody's on the same page in the in the in the message is uniform and it speaks from the top down and it reflects the guys that they're bringing in you know all the guys that they brought in are guys who are hungry who are competitors who not only fighting for spots but we're going to help us win games and when you're around environment like that like that that makes you excited makes you hopeful and you know you don't know how it's going to turn out until we start playing games but the foundation is extremely important and I think this off season we've really done a great job of building that they have and then when a coach Quinn guy here
building with this team so I feel like we're going to be going into this off season really knowing what we all got to do individually to become ready for camp but the the message is clear to come back to camp ready to compete and and and be ready to win thanks very appreciate you guys you're playing as much so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt so I can you know bring younger guys with me because I've been to one of those younger guys we're seeing uh well as a workhorse he he goes stay quiet you're going to work hard and that's all I love about he focuses he don't really talk much he's going to get a job done do a job right really has any
mistakes what would be a successful season national championship I ring when all the games we don't want to lose anything we got a mindset that we can't be beat which we got to go show it seems like you guys expect the national championship over here this year even more so you guys have all come back for this you guys have all decided like that that's a lot because that you can feel the difference or is there not really any difference it's just the same word it's definitely a difference everyone working harder um we noticed our last run like we most of us don't have any years after this so we got to go go bigger going home and we not trying to go home finished big we know what you guys think of Michigan but when you look at what they did they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute right you know what I mean I mean you you were right there something goes a little different you guys could have been won that game against them does that tell you anything about like that hey you guys want to win a national championship but you played to the 59th minute with the team that
won the national championship last year like you're that close so I'm saying we just like work harder that's that's kind of coach makes of saying you know nobody cares just work harder like those know when we played Georgia it's the same thing last last play you know they went on the win in 90 so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season I think we'll be fine how frustrating is that you're that close against the last two national title uh of course as you know it's frustrating but you can't change the outcome you can't really dwell on it you just gotta you know come back and work harder do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change is that as you get older you kind of learn I thought I was working hard and then you always find out there's a little more yeah definitely I mean that's how that's what growing up is basically in college I thought freshman year I was working it's hard as I could but now I look back at it I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now so just to learn anything
80 85 I mean I can it's all on me I just I think it's a little higher I was just trying to be funny but I mean it's all on me I just got to run harder get in shape I think I think I think I definitely can last I was just you know we got to get the young guys to come along with us we can't play 50 snaps again that's just too much on our bodies uh just everybody like online D line we gotta get those younger guys to play you know get that pieces on the D line and online and everywhere else so we can last that uh yeah I did unless we were like winning by like a line uh I thought like there are no mommies you know I can go sit down or something but we're playing them big games like you know
in order to enter or north those kind of games of course I want to be because I know I can contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kaden McDonald's he got a few guys in a second oh yeah definitely K-Mac is a K-Mac's animal y'all you haven't really seen it yet but in practice he shows all the time he's just he's growing right now he has to work I think he just has to get you know in the playbook and things like that you guys are about the exact same size you're both listen six three you're three twenty seven he's three twenty six yeah he's I kind of look at him like my my junior but you know K-Mac he's gonna be a great player he's gotta develop more and getting a playbook so really a lot on you older guy there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in your back is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well yeah definitely we've got to be leaders um like I say we've got to have them play this year we can't just play all the snaps they got to get in there and get some work and we got to get them right during the all season so they can play and I just play they want to like contribute like make plays
tackles sex yeah they're definitely some big dudes um and they all work hard I've only seen much it's only day two when I'm passing on but throughout the workouts they've been working hard you know they they're determined and it looks like they're ready to work with me how important this notes feels like there's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defensive tactics you can eat up space but also move you know right that is that because that's important maybe for great defense to have guys like you that have some balls but also a great team I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last uh a couple of nice and championship winners are like team of north they didn't know they got two bit uh detaco two athletic detacles look at Georgia two athletic detacles so I think that's definitely need if you
want to go on that big run the beat those big teams if you think about that they're going to find by the defense attack what's Georgia Jordan Davis and Dylan Carter what's Michigan is Chris Jenkins tell them more questions you might as well as how I mean you understand it because you play it but I feel like some time I don't know are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to I think so uh I think there's darn novella to develop more and more of these like freakish detacles yeah like in the combine just now you see in like those guys they're moving four to four seven eights and things like that so we'll see and when you think it when you think about this freakish off like how do you think you fit into that all of that kind of player you watch that and say yeah that's me yeah definitely I think I'm top-notch when it comes to detacles but I don't want to you know get a big head but you know I watch it come on I watch it do the drills I have taped here you're like looking like my film so I think I'm up there with all the time I think you know you become like a artist who comes to batting up passes the
figure wags can't you think I mean you're going to spring practice you're not doing as much a weapon of a weapon how do you work on that do you have like a goal one mine I don't remember how you had last year but you have a goal one mine I mean as many as I can have I think I have more than that but I think they're counting I think they're counting some of them and it's some of them where I like just listed so but I think we work on Joe's matching the hand I think that's goes big and what we do is a D line you know just affecting the quarter bag is anyway you can it's just great for the defense you know just that little thing covered is I you know you might throw it a little bit to the left to our player so let's something that you really really have to work on you that's one of the things that you maybe worked on the most you can bring your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen like oh that passed I think I just have like a like a eye for the ball comment I kind of just look at the quarter bag
and just I see him like load up I just try to get in his ways and sometimes he just throws it to me I mean they get frustrated but you know we're a team you know we're just getting better watch a lot a lot of different backs man they just learn to grow for them I don't really have a top three but I'll give you I'll give you one I would say say quan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey auto he was injured this year I like McCaffrey who's the best back in this draft I lead out of the yard that's y'all that's y'all decision playing well Howard when I'm going to remember most we're a Howard man he's just such a great lead such a great leader man it's just like in moments where
you know usually a lot of players they fold man he was just always calm and relaxed man he just the leader that he was man that's one thing I'm gonna remember about him yeah he's he's gonna be really good man he's um coastal lock I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia just that one two punch with them both as well they're gonna be really good backs and so James people's man he's smart the way that he goes about his business man he's mature and so man he's growing you know just as a as a person in as a player and so man yeah definitely Ohio State you know that running back room is in gray hands yeah coach coach hard line man he's full of energy man and he's creative as well you know I'm just learning from him as well you know I'm trying to run more outside the backfield was being able to learn from coach hard line and so he's definitely creative at what he's he does and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well and so I think
they'll do really good just intensity man then since he got the playoffs um every game and it's like the intensity got you know higher and higher and so you know being able I know in the lead it's it's the same thing even if it's not the playoffs just every every game and then since he keeps getting higher and higher and so yeah you just I know you got to bring it you know each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State you know I definitely feel like Ohio State they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that you know I just remember even before going through this process I'll talk to a lot of players um before then and they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them you know for the NFL and so yeah yeah I know I took a couple days off after the um national championship and then shoot right after that I'm right in right in Tampa Florida and I'm right to it and so um yeah I think while I trained I trained
at your birth performance I think it's called the House of Athlete or the compound now they did they did a good job man they're just bringing us in and the the way they went about training us man they were they did a really good job the bucket near know I haven't anything in the city Tampa Tampa nice this nice it's a nice city man really nice uh the 40 to broad and avert yeah yeah no man uh it's really all about technique and then it's about my set as well and so um I say you know it's for the love of my brother it's for the love of will highway it's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter just making sure you know um first of all my quarterback doesn't get sacked um and I I told will I think it was before the first game I was like I got your brother it's uh I said man I'm not gonna let you get hit you know um and so
I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack I'm not sure that um but I know if I did I haven't given up too many and so man it's for the love of my brothers though man making sure that the ball get in their hands you know the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed in my game uh you can't really work on this you know in all season I feel like it's more so you know you got to put the pads on you got to go through some inside run you know maybe uh it's really just continuing run through tackles and so that's I feel like that's one of the areas in my game you know I want to continue to get better at I feel like I did a good job of that my senior and so I just want to continue to build on that yes I did yes I did I did meet with um New Orleans as well um I never got that comparison actually um I know I have a Camera shoe yeah man I have a Camera great great back man um just what he does and
knows 101 matchups he's dangerous man and he's so smooth he's so smooth as well I'm not going to lie he's smooth yeah um inside zone from stack being able to hit that thing downhill and I say the next one it's probably just an option route out of the backfield you know and man and man coverage you're getting on that linebacker and so yeah I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself man in the way that man um he approaches the game he comes in with the mindset you know he's going to work every single week you know every practice you know he's working hard you know um even shoot I don't know every good I think he had every game was a good game for him man and so but still man he always has the mentality the mindset that you know he's
going to come in each and every day he's going to continue to work and get better man and so he's definitely man he's going to be a special player man he really is so I think I'm going to look like I'm going to be a star kid you know some injuries man a lot of ups and downs man it's just how you respond to adversity and I feel like that's something that God has definitely helped me to do better it's just um not have something to lean on now you know I remember before I met him you know going through those adversity I had nothing to run to you know you can run to people but they still can't it's not too much they can't truly help you you know I feel like you know I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ and so being able to lean on him you know he gives you in those moments where it's tough you know where it's slow and um when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about um he gives you he gives you that peace and comfort you know um even in those moments man where it's so hard that you can't you can't explain
it's like man I'm going through this but like how am I still filled with this internal joy you know how do I have so much peace in this situation and so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you and so um man eight those guys have such a great mentality man I might just really love their mentality especially um cue as well you know I talked about will Howard his leadership but Quincham mentality man um that boy just yeah that boy just gifted you know you see you know sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like you know he should have a negative five yards and as soon as you know it you know he that running through somebody step on him somebody and shoot it's a game of 10 it's uh just realized it's too different to actually uh um shoot I think
yeah man I think it's just like he's just gifted man to be honest he's just gifted you know he's he's a big back you know he's strong and so um you know he's he's able to do he's able to do those things and so um yeah man it's definitely you know I look at his game and I want to you know at the same time I want to learn from Quincham you know I want to look at this game is like man where where can I get better at as well you know that's the type of player I am I'm always looking to get better man I'm always looking to grow as a player Julian San oh yeah he's gonna be a great but he's gonna be a great quarterback man he's so so accurate and so um he's definitely man I know Coach Dez definitely going to get him right just you know um container grow as a leader container grow as a player and so he's going he's gonna be really good for our state uh he's uh I know just the quarterback position um I feel like you know the quarterbacks in the past they've they've definitely been vocal and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to um ask Julian San as well it's to be that vocal leader and lead the um and lead to offensive lead to steam
shoe man he has he has a bill like JK Dobbins and um I kind of see them you know similar similarities in their game as well and I know JK Dobbins he was a great running back um I feel like he's not talked about his none um a lot but man his career here you watch his highlights is is great I remember um before I recruit before I committee here I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every every um one of his years here like four or five times and so man he was such a great back and um I feel like you know um when I see JK Dobbins when I see um James people I see similarities to both of their games I feel like they play the same so appreciate you
so all I got coming in last round I knew it was all just a tacky everyday really the same way it's taking advantage very well physically how different are you weight wise body wise on that from the year ago um I think I got a lot bigger I'm like 240 you know like 244 right now last year I played it like 236 to 37 what does it feel like a 244 or a belt you feel like almost a different machine out there yeah what's it what does it feel like to be running around out there like you are but with more more back I just feel like I'm like like like like more downhill like stronger like I'm taking all the bloods better it's bigger no is it daunting uh maybe that's not the correct term but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year and stuff what do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more this is gotta get ready to just play 30 more snaps so but are you are you
how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8th standpoint yeah I'm looking forward to it I'm ready for it my I'm ready for it it's a rematch so to say but it's not really two different teams compared to the last time y'all played and stuff but how does that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the we're an opener of that magnitude yeah we're the opener like that we've been um we've been emphasizing it a lot we know we got coming so we know we got to do we've been prepared for it I already just probably worked today I think Riley ready to play right now he he advanced freshman like he ended up here in the book he stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy like he saw like a saw line to him or like you said you're ready I don't know you're ready what was that process like during last season could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready for whatever the team needed for you yeah because that's pretty much what my role was just whenever I was needed I had to step up so I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year when you say ready is it more a physical thing
is it a mental thing when I say ready I think it's pretty much like everything physically mentally mostly I think I'm there oh I still have one more time oh I feel like it's a uh it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year but I kind of go about it the same way like last year I was intentional with everything I did I feel like this year it's going to be the same thing it's probably a little bit more and what work I say describe like now I say like when you think of me you would think of like a like a bullet like a silver bullet I don't really a
bullet I'm always on the ball that's how I like to play a thing no I ain't got to be my nickname but so I'm not saying that the thing can be that's all oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah it's like more questions for Patricia's style and how it's free I mean how does that fit you and what are you enjoying about it? I'm laying in that kind of style oh think it fit me because I don't know I just like the defense I feel like we got like you said we got a lot of freedom and we're moving around a lot a lot of the terms is like you know I don't know I don't really not answer that that's okay does it kind of you can go on your instincts a little bit more maybe and it's not so thinking of too much I don't even know if I say that because there's a lot of thinking going on but it's like I just like it's deep I like how to put it deep because I like what you got going on what was it sad when CJ left the ring? yeah uh now I wanted to much sad I was kind of like happy for you like yeah that's what you want? don't miss him in that?
no no no no that's my dog I'm gonna say yeah kind of missing a little bit but yeah I'm happy for you well don't thank you go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own yeah how much do you feel that is the guy who certainly contributed last year but will be in this bigger role and along the summer year your classmate? yeah I do feel like um yeah I do feel like I did win a natur but like you said my role wasn't same as how's my beaters here so yeah I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling with me beyond the field a lot more place great oh bell thank you very much so I feel like I kind of have a lot of meters on the D line at the D in position so we kind of all kind of just count off each other and all
um we're competitive and we love it we're all competitive people we all look at fish each other and that's really the thing in the best side of all this we're all just kind of bouncing off each other and see what one person does and we kind of brittle into our toolbox and we all kind of just kind of build one great thing one okay do you ever go around last year and you got to get the shot at the full back and get the day of coaching with that idea and two coach them I mean how did that come about because you're a jackson all yourers not me okay get the test down so I definitely didn't high school I was full back and a little bit tired and so I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in coach Wilson honestly you left watching it too before you and I feel like you playing that seed in coach day's head and coach day kind of just went for it and I tried to do the best I could to do it. Does that continue now? Do anything in the spring? New playbook I did not know you haven't got that far. I like to think myself as a football player I can really play any position on the field you need me
to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and I'll try to do my best for you. Kid Jack you the same thing. Oh yeah. Don't like what you're talking about. Graphically that's why. Kid is talking to coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of saw you and got out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back just got to win into those real perspectives and how did that help you maybe get the right mindset I guess I'm going to lose control. Um definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it how long the season is now. What you got to do to prepare for and what to happen in all that time from here to to this. So I feel like we definitely just coached in me kind of connected and we kind of just talks man-to-man and uh he kind of just sent straight to me and I feel like we kind of both are pretty honest and we know we're making it. Yeah. Making each other better every day and we got the four best DNs. Five best DNs honestly and we're in college football and we're going to be one of the best D-wines in college football. How do you feel like a better player today at any more of DNs here?
Well I feel like I'm taking big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. How do you record your head around the process to see the TKFC? Does that sound? I mean it sounds bizarre but I mean the season goes by so fast already so when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow it's already week 10 so now it's kind of gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of save for it because I'm already here for a feeling of freshness for face crazy. But you don't want to spend all your power in the first first month of the year right? Oh yeah. There is a mindset that I did in the season. Yeah definitely definitely going to have that the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys about like that? Last question right here.
He doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watched the film. We see him all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become so we know we we're right at the same right place at the right time and God wanted us to be here and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together and I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together at something special. We plan as much so I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt so I can know bring younger guys with me because I've been going a lot. One of those younger guys we're seeing it like it's the first time it's heard all your lectures. What have you seen from Will? Because I don't know if I should have real forgot about it because he was heard and now he's running you know almost a second man out behind you and tied. What have you seen in the next few years? Will is a workhorse. He he goes stay quiet. He don't work hard and that's what I love about him. He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's going to get the job done. Do a job right. He rarely has any mistakes. What would be a successful season?
A national championship? I'm running when all the games we don't want to lose anything. We got a mindset that we can't be beat. We just got to go show it. Seems like you guys expect the national championship every year. This year even more so you guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like an opposite one. Does that just keep you feeling different or is there not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Like most of us don't have any years after this. So we got to go go bigger going home and we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan but when you look at what they did they won the national championship and you guys took them down to the final minute. Right? You know what I mean? I mean you were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that? Hey you guys want to win a national championship but you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year.
Like you're that close. So I'm saying we just like work harder. That's kind of what you make of saying you know nobody cares. Just work harder. Like those you know won't play Georgia. It's the same thing. Last play you know they went on the win in the 90s so we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Uh of course it's frustrating but you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change. As soon as you get older you kind of learn. I thought that was working hard but then you always find out there's a little more Yeah definitely. I mean that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. I thought freshman year I was working. It's hard as I could but now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. If the stamina is a 16 then the answer is like what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh 80 85 I mean I can it's all on me.
I just I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny but I mean it's all on me. I just got to run harder. Get the shape. I think I think I definitely can lie. I was just you know we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps again. That's just too much on our bodies. Uh just everybody like online. DeLine we got to get those younger guys to play you know get that pieces on the DeLine and online and everywhere else so we can last that long. Speaking of the top of life plan. I'm not sure if you like playing that new snap to the end. I don't know if any of us were really expected to play that next time. Uh yeah I did unless we were like winning by like a lot. Uh I thought like there are no moments you know I can go sit down or something but we're not playing them big games like you know Notre Dame too or North those kind of games.
Of course I want to be because I know I can contribute and I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. What stands out about Kevin McDonald is he got the key. Have you guys ever seen him? Oh yeah definitely. Came back is a came back to animal. Y'all you haven't really seen it yet but in practice he shows it all the time. He's just he's growing right now. He has to work ethic he just has to get you know in the playbook and things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen you're both listening to six three you're three twenty seven he's three twenty six. Yeah he's I kind of look at him like my my junior but you know came out he's going to be a great player. He's got to develop more and get into playbook. So really a lot on you older guys there's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in your back is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys Yeah definitely we got to be leaders um like I say we've got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps they got to get in there and get some work and we got to get them right during the all season so they can play and not just play they want to like contribute like make plays tackles sex.
Yeah they're definitely some big dudes um and they all work hard. I've only seen much of some day too when I'm passing on but throughout the workouts they've been working hard you know they they're determined to I'd say that and it looks like they're ready to work with me. I'm important to this. It feels like there's a lot of great defenses that you have big athletic defensive tactics you can eat up space but also move you know right that is that. Is that an aquarium maybe for great defense to have guys like you that have some balls but also a great feature? I think that is definitely I think if you look at the last uh a couple of nice and the championship winners uh like see my North they didn't know they got two good uh detacled two athletic detacles look at Georgia two athletic detacles uh I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. Well if you think about this they're almost defined by the defense attackers like what's Georgia's Jordan Davis and Janet Carter and what's Michigan is Chris Jenkins.
Couple more questions. How do you understand this? You play it but I feel like some time I don't know are people realizing how important defense tackles are a little bit more than they used to? I think so uh I think they're starting to develop to develop more and more of these like freaky defense tackles. Yeah like in the combine just now you see in like those guys they're moving forward to 478 and things like that so we'll see. And when you think about this freaky attack how do you think you fit into that all of that kind of player? You watch that and say yeah that's me. Uh yeah definitely I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles but I don't want to you know get a big head but you know I watch it come on I watch it do the drills. I have tape here you like you're looking like my film so I think I'm up there with all those times. Do you become like an artist who comes to batting up passes the figure wags have your claims? I mean when you're going to spring practice you're not doing it as much a weapon on the level. I don't know how you work on that. Do you have like a goal where you are?
I don't remember how many you have a goal. I'm like how many people do you want to have? I mean as many as I can have I think I have more than that but I think he said it on the level. I think he made it count some of them and it's some of them where I like just missed it so but I think we work on drills matching the hand I think that's uh goes big and uh what we do is a deal on you know just affecting the quarter bag is anywhere you can it's just great for the defense you know just that little thing you cover it is I you know he might throw it a little bit to the left to our player so. So it's something that you really really have to work on. It's really that's one of the things that you maybe worked on the most. It's really your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen like oh that passes through the guys. We don't have to ask for this trial. I don't know if we're kind of kind of expected for it. I think I just have like a like a eye for the ball kind of I kind of just look at the quarter bag and just I see him like load up I just try to get in his ways and sometimes he throws it in his ball. I'm here to do it to the Ohio State quarterbacks get your back down passes.
I mean they get frustrated but you know we're a team you know we're just getting better. I should lot of a lot of different backs man to just learn and grow for them. You got to pick your top three backs you have to go right now home to two. I don't really have a top three but I'll give you I'll give you one. I would say say Juan Gibbs and I like McCaffrey. Auto he was injured this year I like McCaffrey. Best back in this draft I'll lead that up the yard that's y'all that's y'all decision. Playing well Howard when I'm going to remember most. We're a Howard man he's just such a great lead such a great leader man. It's just like in moments where you know usually a lot of players they fold man. He was just always calm and relaxed man. He just the leader that he was man that's one thing I'm going to remember about him.
Yeah he's shoot he's going to be really good man. He's on Coach Lock. I think he got the transfer in as well from West Virginia just that one two punch with them both as well they're going to be really good backs and so James people's man he's smart the way that he goes about his business man he's mature and so man he's growing you know just as a person in as a player and so man yeah definitely Ohio State you know that running back room is in gray hands. Yeah coach Coach Hartland man he's full of energy man and he's creative as well you know I'm just learning from him as well you know I'm trying to run more outside the backfield was being able to learn from Coach Hartland and so he's definitely creative at what he does and he brings a lot of energy to the team as well and so I think they'll do really good. Just intensity man then since he got the playoffs every game man it's like the intensity got
you know higher and higher and so you know being a but I know in the lead it's the same thing even if it's not the playoffs just every every game and intensity it keeps getting higher and higher and so yeah you just I know you got to bring it you know each and every day and come in and work just like Ohio State you know I definitely feel like Ohio State they definitely do a good job of preparing us for that you know I just remember even before going through this process I'll talk to a lot of players before then and they told me a lot of just about how much Ohio State prepared them you know for the NFL and so yeah yeah I know I took a couple days off after the national championship and then shoot right after that I'm writing right in Tampa Florida and I'm right to it and so yeah I think while trained I trained at your birth performance I think it's called the House of Athlete or the compound now they did they did a good job man it just bringing us in and the way they went about training us man they were they did a really good job the bucket in the years no
I haven't Tampa Tampa nice this is nice it's a nice city man really nice uh the 40 to broad and avert yeah yeah no man it's really all about technique and then it's about mine said as well and so I say you know it's for the love of my brother it's for the love of will highway it's for the love of the receivers who I got on the perimeter just making sure you know first of all my quarterback doesn't get sacked and I I told will I think it was before the first game I was like I got your brother it's uh I said man I'm not gonna let you get hit you know um and so I don't know if I don't know if I gave up a sack I'm not sure that um but I know if I did I haven't given up too many and so man it's for the love of my brothers don't man making sure the the ball get in their hands you know the guys on the outside and making sure they get fed
in my game uh you can't really work on this you know in the offseason I feel like it's more so you know you got to put the pads on you got to go through some inside run you know maybe I was really just continuing to run through tackles and so that's I feel like that's one of the areas in my game you know I want to continue to get better I I feel like I did a good job of that my senior and so I just want to continue to build on that yes I did yes I did uh I did meet with um new Orleans as well um I never got that comparison actually um I know I have a Camera sure yeah man I have a Camera great great back man um just what he does and those 101 matchups he's dangerous man and he's so smooth he's so smooth as well I'm not going like he's smooth yeah um inside zone from stack being able to hit that thing downhill and I say
the next one is probably just an option route out of the backfield you know and man and man coverage you're getting on that linebacker and so yeah I say the man the biggest thing is the way that he carries himself man in the way that man um he approaches the game he comes in with the mindset you know he's going to work every single week you know every practice you know he's working hard you know um even shoot I don't know every good I think he had every game was a good game for him man and so but still man he always has the mentality the mindset that you know he's going to come in each and every day he's going to continue to work and get better man and so he's definitely man he's going to be a special player man he really is man a lot of ups and downs man it's just how you respond to adversity and I feel like that's
something that God has definitely helped me to do better is this um not have something to lean on now you know I remember before I met him you know going through those adversity I had nothing to run to you know you can run to people but they still can't it's not too much they can't truly help you you know I feel like you know I feel like the only person that can truly help you is your relationship with Jesus Christ and so being able to lean on him you know he gives you in those moments where it's tough you know where it's low and um when you're behind the scenes and you're going through things that people don't know about um he gives you he gives you that peace and comfort you know um even in those moments man where it's so hard that you can't you can't explain it's like man I'm going through this but like how am I still filled with this internal joy you know how do I have so much peace in this situation and so that's something that only Jesus Christ can give you and so
man those guys have such a great mentality man I might just really love their mentality especially Q as well you know I talked about will Howard his leadership but Quinch on mentality man um that boy just yeah that boy just gifted you know you see you know sometimes he put in a situation where he looked like you know he should have a negative five yards and as soon as you know it you know he that running through somebody step on somebody and shoot it's a gain of 10 it's uh uh um shoot I think yeah man I think it's just like he's just gifted man to be honest he's just gifted you know he's he's a big back you know he's strong and so um you know he's he's able to do he's able to do those things and so um yeah man it's definitely you know I look at his game and I want to you know at the same time I want to learn from Quinch on you know I want to look at this game is like man where where can I get better at as well you know that's the type of player I am I'm always looking to get better man I'm always looking to grow as a player
Julian San oh yeah he's gonna be a great but he's gonna be a great quarterback man he's so so accurate and so um he's definitely man I know Coach Dez definitely going to get him right just you know um container grow as a leader container grow as a player and so he's going he's going to be really good for high state uh he's uh I know just the quarterback position um I feel like you know the quarterbacks in the past they've they've definitely been vocal and so I feel like that's something that they're definitely going to um ask Julian San as well it's to be that vocal leader and lead the um and lead to offensive lead to steam shoot man he has he has a build like JK Dobbins and um I kind of see them you know similar similarities in their game as well and I know JK Dobbins he was a great running back I feel like he's not talked about his now um a lot but man his career here you watch his highlights is is great I remember um before I recruit before I committee here I remember watching JK Dobbins highlights like every every um one of his years here like four or five times and so man he was such a great
back and um I feel like you know um when I see JK Dobbins when I see um James people I see similarities to both of their games I feel like they play the same and so I appreciate you all yeah
so well I got coming in last year I knew the role so I just attacked Eric Dave really the same way it's a very very rare physically different are you weight wise body wise on that from the year ago oh I think I got a lot bigger I'm like 240 you know like 244 right now last year I played it like 236 to 37 what does it feel like a 244 or a belly you feel like an almost a different machine out there yeah like what does it feel like to be running around out there like you are but with more more back I just feel like I'm like like like more downhill like stronger like I'm taking all blocks better it's a big knee is it don't think uh maybe that's
not the correct term but to think you're going to be playing much more than you did even last year and you played quite a bit last year instead what do you have to get straight in your head about being on the field that much more this is gotta get ready to just play there any more snaps so but are you are you how would you describe how much you're looking forward to it from an 8cm yeah I'm looking forward to it I'm ready for it my I'm ready for it the Texas opener it's a rematch so to speak but it's not really two different teams compared to the ones time you all played and stuff but how's that enhanced this camp for you and this team getting ready for the where an opener of that magnitude yeah with an opener like that we've been um we've been emphasizing it a lot we know we got coming so we know we got to do we've been prepared for it I already just broadly worked today I think Riley ready to play right now he he advanced freshman like he in the here in the book he stood in like he advanced and his measurements was crazy like he saw like saw like to him what was that process like during last season
could you feel yourself becoming more and more ready for whatever the team needed for me yeah because that's pretty much what my role was just whenever I was needed I had to step up so I feel like that's what built me into me being able to say I'm ready for this year when you say ready is it more a physical thing is it a mental thing when I say ready I think it's pretty much like everything physically mentally mostly I think I'm there oh um I feel like it's uh it's a way bigger responsibility with me having to step up this year but I kind of go about it the same way like last year I was attention over to everything I did I feel like this year it's gonna be the same thing it's probably a little bit more for somebody who some really
it won't work I don't know where you want uh I say describe like now I say like when you think of me you would think of like a like a bullet like a silver bullet like I'm really a bullet I'm always on the ball that's how I like to play a thing you know I ain't got to be my nickname but oh yeah yeah yeah um think it fit me because I don't know I just like the defense I feel like we got like you said we got a lot of freedom and we're moving around a lot a lot of the terms is like no I don't know I don't really know how to answer that that's okay does it you get to go on your instincts a little bit more baby and it's not so thinking of too much I don't even know if I say that because there's
a lot of thinking going on but it's like I just like it's defense I like how to put it to defense I like what you got going on uh now I want to say that I was kind of like happy for you yeah that's what you want no that's my dog I'm gonna say yeah kind of missing a little bit but yeah I'm happy for you though oh well thank you go ahead one last but coach days talked a lot about the guys who played some last year but maybe weren't the starters and the hunger for that wasn't maybe your national championship you guys will win your own yeah how much do you feel that as a guy who certainly contributed last year but we'll be in this bigger role and I want to some of your your classmates yeah I do feel like um yeah I do feel like I did win a national championship but like you said my role wasn't same as how's gonna be this year so yeah I definitely want to want to go get another one experienced that like feeling maybe on the field a lot more place I said oh well thank you very much I'm so I'm so championship in Nican you know before and everything like that and also
to get your your teeth knocked in you know first game and you know can't have that happen because you know really doesn't mean anything and so just the constant mindset to continually get better but on the forefront of my mind and forefront of anyone here you can ask yeah yeah I know we we look at the class stats every now and then I can be like oh man they're gone they're gone but no it's been it's been good I mean the guys here are still here I'm as I've definitely kind of bonded together pretty good so yeah yeah yeah I mean uh you know Mark came in the other day is like that class 21 best class ever and like yeah sure okay you know I can't really can't really even you know just sitting to that you know I don't have much left but um uh yeah I mean to do what we can and do what we can for this team has been really important for all
of us and I think um us now realizing where the veterans you know like with all guys not just been um kind of strange at least to begin with you know because you go from um all those guys you like Donnie and Josh and those guys and all of sudden it's Sunday we have a team meeting after the um like the celebration the shoe and all of a sudden the next day there's gone and you know it's just very different so I think us being able to step up as you know leaders and as as vets to help bring out you know along the team our units and um this program has been really important. What I do overall give you more questions uh just to try um but then you was your honest life for the first year Luke said that Jake has been in the rest of so far he didn't continue to talk about you but he's playing for somebody who went through that would have been impressed by Jake. No it could have been doing really well I mean I could go and he goes to work um he's extremely athletic extremely flexible um you know he's a young kid obviously he's a lot
of um a lot of development a lot of he's a little adversity at all of us do um but I think he's going through that right now but he's been um coming out on the better end of it so far and um excited to see what he can do because he's very impressive at this young stage. So it's easier overall level of excitement just to be back with the rest of this interior off the line group you guys having something just good to back there. Yeah extremely excited I mean trying to just build that culture back up again you know like what we had last year uh I were trying to do a little stuff here and there and I know I think we're going to Ray race of barbecue I think tomorrow um so shout out Ray race but uh um but yeah I just trying to uh get that brotherhood back get that you know that oblock spirit back uh sure it's coming to you soon um hopefully um but uh just to kind of get those uh not those same faces but those same kind of mindsets back and our our group is important right now and it's it's been fun to meet new guys from different backgrounds and stuff like that um and try to figure out how to
you know build that and mend that together it's been pretty cool. Now as you are one of the most experienced veterans on this team how much do you feel like you have to be a leader for the yeah for sure I mean I think that comes um it's obviously I don't feel like it's natural to anyone to immediately step up and that's something I've been working on every day and talking to God about um but I obviously understand that and that's something I want to continue to work on I want to be able to um be a guy that people can fall back on and like coach just saying before like we're gonna have highs in those but the great players the ones being set our clocks to and I kind of want that's my goal is to be one of those people that you can do that um and I think for especially a very new set of eyes um in the woody um not only coaches but players um I think it's very important to kind of keep that steady um mindset and I think for me learning how to be a leader has been important just to not be too hard on myself but also not let myself kind of slack off in some departments to try to keep um steady just your story itself though is
testament of what it means to like for perseverance and stuff too though right Carson I mean you know that's uh that's gonna have to stand up from somebody to say that right I mean just yeah what do you what do you think you've shown more than anything else in every card yeah I mean I've been blessed you know I've you know I've been blessed with a lot of adversity I think that's definitely made me better on the back end and um you know coach so it coach day always talks about it and you don't you know great leaders aren't you know they can show it but you know a lot of people can show a lot a lot of people can just talk about it um but to be about it is important and I think um to be enough went through a lot of that adversity I went through a lot of that stuff and um my testament you know has been um written in an interesting way but I think for me to take that next step is really important for not only for this team but for myself personally what's your opinion about your impressions of Ethan yeah uh he's been doing great I mean he came in big freaking strong uh he's fun to be in the weight room with uh he's uh he's kind of quiet
like that's kind of my first impression on him but he's actually pretty funny dude he he and his dad come over and they kind of joke around and he's so he's been doing a great job all right he's been doing a great job um for his size he has like freaky athletic feet like watching do the ladders and that's a lot of massive overrun on those things you know doing the little icky shuffle but I mean he he's he was killing it and so he's been doing a great job I can't wait to see um how he kind of continues to develop um throughout this summer and uh throughout this fall camp yeah piggy has been doing great I mean he um he stepped up piggy yeah yeah everyone refers to this piggy is his username one time nice everyone's piggy anyway um you know pig's been doing great he uh he's been able to step up and kind of bring around the long those younger guys um you know everyone's kind of trying to figure out their their new roles and I think he's been uh he'd been doing a lot of things big body guy that he catched a buyer can run between the tacos his feet are quicker than once you think for a big guy that really good feet
and get balanced so that's what makes him good that's what I saw him good morning back well tidy and background now I don't know many with that type of background but when he's high school we see that they try to play as an h-back well really good for you looking the portal for running actually we want to try to recruit running backs does it matter to you if you have two different styles of running backs maybe one guy can do certain things better one guy can do certain things other or is it you'll just say the best running back you can find you want to have different styles yeah I want different styles you're trying to take the same but you know take the same thing you're going to take guys with different students uh whether they're big guys small guys, tall as catchers in between the tapping runners and you know you know I don't want to take the same thing you know different different different backs
you know I have my own opinion on the side they're coming to risk I had Jordan James out of the world and I he's my risk on running show yards and freshman in probably way the two ten or five which is not very big but they ain't got nothing to do with him you know some guys you got the most sticking about his own and you play with a lot of aggression down here running and that could be CJ that could be James or what could be the freshman go Jackson it's just who has a nose for getting his own but that's that's where I'm going over here nah just because you're being there I'm making a pop we need to get obviously you know freshman running backs coming in about what is there here but what do you need to see from a freshman to feel comfortable with that so in the first thing with it on the ball well it would they do they little small detail but take care of the ball the second thing would be
how good they know and pass for them because it's the hardest thing for high school backs because they're not really sure in high school you have to understand the pass but by all their falls on who so like they said I'm in person right now so but that's why I need to see first for everything yes I will understand to be feel comfortable with with go and I say where they're at or at least you know where their time lies yeah I think they're gonna find I can say I tell all the young guys he's a marathon I was playing the first day first you've been an armistice I'm special to know you're a spot special to you then you you're in the right to be a a book I'll be so they'll get that down the field so I think they're cheering me right there's just first practice like it wasn't merit some to build off for him cleaning stuff to work on
long day I've just seen some of the younger guys that you're really developed about like Etrick Houston is coming in this year seeing him working with you guys Joshua would make it sounds like you come home I feel like they're definitely picking up quick I mean I was in their shoes one time and I had Zach Harrison and Javonte and Tyler Freidael in front of me so I feel like I'm just trying to be kind of one of those peers that they work for me and kind of just give them the steps to get there and I feel like they're definitely picking up quick and they're definitely going to be one of the great rushmen JT and Jack Buffy and Anita are on their way to spring same as some of the opportunities for me and Trippin is there a difference in the work going because you've been getting through the epic champ with you in the last couple of minutes um I feel like all the camps I've definitely got a big course learned and I love that side of Asco's J4 and I love getting more reps because I just like protecting my craft so I mean some people may not need it some other people needed but I mean it's like you have me reps like you have some little things on that course later
so I'm working on it um I mean for me it's always just kind of getting my uh little details perfectly like my steps my footing kind of just affecting my toolbox is what we call it my craft and uh it's trying to be a it's like a whenever every place you kind of do yeah um definitely just getting stronger faster everything all the above but uh one of my big things would be a leader and kind of just not trying to look still look up to Jack and JT and kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into so I feel like kind of have a lot of leaders on the D-line and at the D-In position so we kind of all kind of just counts off each other and others. I'm competitive and we love it. We all competitive people we all live to fish each other and that's the way to bring the best out of all of us. We're all just kind of bouncing off
each other and see what one person does and we kind of build it into our actual box and we all kind of just kind of build one great thing. You're going to be like last year and you've got to get the shot at the full back and the day of coaching that I there in two coach's film I mean how to get come about because you're a judge actually you're sloppy. You get to test that. So I definitely did it in high school I was pulled back and a little bit of tidying so I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson honestly he loved watching it too before he loved and I feel like he planned that seat in Coach Day's head and Coach Day kind of just went for it and tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that the chin wing now? Do you have anything in the screen? New playbook I did not know yet. I haven't got that far. I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field you need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and I'll try to do my best for you. Kid Jack you the same thing. Oh yeah. Graphically that's why.
Kid was talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of sight you and you got out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back. Just got to wait into it as we were expecting him and how did that help you maybe get the right mindset I guess when it needs to come. I'm definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it how long the season is now. What you got to do to prepare for and what could happen in all that time from here to to then. So I feel like we definitely just coached in me kind of connected and we kind of just talks man-to-man and he kind of just sent it straight to me and I feel like we kind of both are pretty honest and we know we're making it. We're making each other better every day and we got the four best Dn's, five best Dn's honestly. We're going to be one of the best D lines in comfortable. I think it's like a better player today than you were again this year. I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of
bring people in and I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. I think record-in-run costs to see the TKFC. Is it sound? I mean it sounds bizarre but I mean the season goes by so fast already so when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow it's already week 10 so now it's kind of gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it because I'm already here for you. I'm freshness for the face crazy. But you don't want to spit on your powder for the first first month of the year right? Oh yeah. There is that pace yourself there. There is a mindset there. Yeah definitely definitely going to have that the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys about like that? Last question right here. From 2016 to 2017, four NFL defense events all in the same rotation. How much does he talk to about that? I mean he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know what we could become. So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time and God wanted us to be here and He knew we wanted us all to come
together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together. It's something special. Great. How did your expectations like us meet up with how do you feel when you're playing at this point of guess? I feel like I made the plays that came to me and that's where the Ockman control. Had more opportunities as he years progressed and been in spots to be around the ball. But the expectation was to come here and contribute to the team and try to help find a way to put the team to win games at high level and to be better than they were actually and for me to play better than I was last year. So really just coming to try to grow with myself and with the team. So that was my big goal and I feel like I've done a good job and the team has done a good job progressing through the year and getting better. So yeah, that's all I can say about that. We're here to the right. 10 May. Let him grow up. Yeah, okay. Just stay here right now.
Does this feel like like a different season? What does it feel like for you to go in and play else? You know, you don't get the goal you want it necessarily to rig your season but here you are. Right? I mean, what is that sense that you have right now that's different from the rigging season? I mean, everybody wants to say it's a new season in terms of because if everybody's one zero and zero right now, when you keep going, if you lose, you're done. So I mean, but generally that's how you play every game. You know, they play every game like it's your last game. So for me, I don't think it's really any difference. You know, they go play at a high level every game that can't be based upon. They're playing every game like it's the same thing. So I would say in terms of that, no, you just have to play the game. Play the game is there. What feels difficult is defense right now going into this. Y'all feel even more work. You know, up by tight and we close together. What was that? I mean, what was your sense of
the further it's so to speak of the defense? I feel like we progressed throughout the season. We didn't make a change after game six because we lost and we didn't play well again. And I feel like we'd grow from that and add to a better place. And over these past two weeks, we're all just realizing, okay, these are the things that we messed up throughout the year. These are what we need to face. These are what this team is trying to exploit on us. So just really going back through everything, seeing what can do better for this kind of game and for the next coming year. Let's come to questions. Deep. Tony, you heard me. Fuck. How does the Tennessee's wide split with your receivers? In fact, you, as a country. I feel like it makes the game more, more, more, more game. I make you receivers and you're in DBs at the place that we're being in the guys up front. And it makes it, truthfully, like those guys have to do their job and these guys have to do your job. You got to be able to stop the run with the people that you have in the run fit and you have to be able to stop their path with the people that you have out there. So that's what they do
and they do it at a really low. So it's going to be tough to go in. And finally, question. Joey Coppin on this discussion. Coach Knowles, we're talking about the speed at which there, you guys are at the call end lane. Is this built for 10-hundreds of the top facts that you can play call end? What is a player kind of end? Is it that gives you just speed at which point you're just calling them? It allows you to get your clean senator. I said earlier just ability to see the formation, see what keys that you have before the play and have knowledge of your job and not really thinking. Being able to play and not make during the games is a really big thing. So whenever you can get the call that's faster and play at a high level and play without thought, that's a really good thing for you team. Okay, look, thank you very much. Appreciate you. Yeah, come on, Patrick. Did you ever do a Jackson? All your was lobby. Oh yeah. You get to test that. So I definitely didn't in high school. I was pulled back in a little bit of tidan. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson. And honestly, he left Washington to Forty-Left.
And I feel like he planned that seed in Coach Day's head and Coach Day kind of just went for it and tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that continuing now? I mean, are there anything in the screen? New playbook. I did not know you hadn't got that far. Yeah, good. How tough was that to you? You're looking back on it. Um, I like to think myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field you need me to. Just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and I'll try to do my best for you. Could you check me the same thing? Oh yeah. But what about what? Graphically, that's why. Can you just talk into Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of start you and you've got out to outside conversations after JT and Jack decided to come back? Just kind of lean into those and you're expecting to do it. And how did that help you maybe get the right mindset against being in this question? Um, definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like the people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it, how long the season is now, what you got to do to prepare for and what's happening all that time from here to to then.
So, I feel like we definitely just coached JT and me kind of connected and we kind of just talks man-to-man and he kind of just sat straight to me and I feel like we kind of both have been honest and we know we're making it. We're making each other better every day and we got the four best Dn's, five best Dn's, honestly, in the coach football and we're going to be one of the best D lines in coach football. How do you feel about the better player today at any more game this season? Well, I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader and kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. I mean, it sounds bizarre but I mean the season goes by so fast already so when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow it's already week 10 so now it's kind of gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it because you've come already here for a feeling of refreshments for each crazy. But you don't want to spend all your powder for the first month of the year right?
Oh yeah. There is a not pace yourself that but I mean there is a mindset that I did that season. Yeah definitely definitely going to have to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys about like that? Last question right here. He doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. We see it in every day. We watch the film. We see him all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become. So we know we're at the same, we're at the right place at the right time and God wanted us to be here and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together and I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together at something special. You get like good coaches who believe in you and like they give you the tools to go out there and just play with confidence and you know not out there doubting yourself like you got your teammates who got your back like my first play when I got up there to the seat like when to sail the IGB and remain like first thing they say is like no worry just go out there and play with confidence you know you know the tools is usual tools just go out there and make a play
and we're about to play coming to you now we're just so time to show a job and just do it and then like saying what coach Roy is like he gives me he puts me in a position like at the drills we put in the work you put in the 101 so just go out there and just perform at the highest level how much better are you right now than maybe last month and four spring practice? I mean I got way better just because I've transitioned a little bit to the inside Nicholas Fawcett I'm like now I seem to like catch catch technique and it's often pepper's not it's not always press at the line so it's like not able to like move my feet move my hands like see like what I got to do just like just a case I got to go back in corner I can I'm playing off now I'm very confident out there do you think that was a natural fit for you or have you had to kind of convince yourself to transmission around? I mean I feel like it's natural for me because I feel like me individually I'm a fast learner a fast learner like coaches help us like learn fast and like like because they're always honest about the techniques and stuff so you like you might down like you pick up all the things and then like when we get out here they coach us to like the techniques always you just go out there and play like fast spot
and it's like it would be like reverse until you're able to go out there and just compete Is that where you kind of stuff is spring or do you think how to mount there? So I've really been stuck there this springed a little bit right whenever you get us like other things I just bounce out there every once in a while just like have just have fun see if I still got it every once in a while so it's as good as going through the compete at most spots You mentioned the technique what technique you know tips and things if you had to pick up and learn from what you're from I mean this is why he always like he always because what coaches ask you hands like see it you see it move your feet and then get your hands with the two hands on the mat so it's like when you get like when you out there you able to like just process like the way the receiver comes off the ball looking at the hips and seeing like the way he moves and are you able to pick up like the row concepts you can get out of that like so it's being like other coach walls for me like as a player and just like him breaking out football to like one-on-one it's like very beneficial what was the hardest part of making that transition from outside inside I really say like the corner you got your cover two you cover three you
cover one us like it's easy but you got nickel now so many responsibilities you got to see like the row concepts you got to be able to process like dying those rows faster then what you got to do in that corner and just be able to like everything's quid like you're transitioning you got like you got to move fast you got to just learn to move fast it's like game recognition where do you think maybe from the most since you got to I'll definitely say I'll definitely say hasn't because how you get like college it's a little bit different high school we don't got to worry about things like that when I want you get to like college in school like this like your recognition of plays and like you know your drops the way like the coverage is supposed to be played I understand all your teammates are supposed to get them feel like it's easy what if you're a proudest man it's very talented he's a great dude he's a humble guy great teammate very supportive as I got into the one wrong because you know you can feed off your energy because you can see like we make it plays he's like he like IGB it's like IGB 2.0 so he's like when you get out there with
guys like that with good energy it makes you play a little bit harder and it's like when you make a play it's out there like it's helping you like it's being out there with him he's a good very good player. One of those guys questions and four kids come to Ohio State obviously over the last few years so there's probably so many things now what is it about one build that gets you through any play at Ohio State? It's a big question I know. Let me just ask a few questions because we have so many kids come out of Glebville and just play at Gleb's schools and then like like tracks a big part of it because I mean it's really good actually everybody got to run track like it's mandatory you don't really get a choice. Can you ever just like get out here and like know how to compete and then like G like Glebville's that mental toughness into you so like have you like I've heard now you got to be mentally tough because I'm not like life's not going to be easy so it's like being out here being able to compete when you down just pick yourself back up I mean that's a dance dance for me and that's a game that's a challenge. So yes, what happened? Did you how would you describe the mentality of the defense right now getting this opportunity
for a rematch award in? Yeah hungry and thankful I mean we know how the last last time when you know we we had a chip on our shoulder I mean we were riding high before that game and we took that loss and we came back how to make a couple changes but I think we understand what you know everything's that stick right now you know just fighting to where another house stage is for next year and that's what's on stake and just to be able to represent this this this stay in this this team I mean we understand what's as what's on the line and you know we're just hungry and blessed that we get this opportunity playing the Rose Bowl. Right behind your Adam King WBNS what do you remember most about walking off the field in Eugene? What was kind of also your mind in that moment? I mean there is a I don't think anybody imagine it imagine us losing you know I didn't that's for sure and I think after that it was a kind of head deep understanding that man we still there's still a lot of ball left to be played I mean you can let it sting for a little bit but you know if you let it carry over too long then
you know there there goes there goes your whole season by I think we did a great job of just understanding coming together in this room right here not being afraid of display or hold accountability for one another and you know as as that happened he came back regrouped and you know we're just you're going right now and I'm just blessed for those specific moments you know losing I mean no one wants to lose but the testimonies and the things you're taught within those little situations speaks of all of them. After all we're all right. Hey Jay what did you see from King Yada the last couple of weeks that was there like a push from him and there may be conversations with him we can see that he's playing some of his best football and things. Yeah I mean that's that's my boy he's in the R2X club too but you know Keata I mean every time his numbers call he goes out there and makes the most of it no no matter where where we are in the game when he goes out there he's just hungry he wants to go
make plays and you know we see it in practice so it's not surprising to us. Bill Rebino has played this back. Bill and Gabriel's obviously very elusive and are talented and he's not very tall. How important it could be to just kind of stay in your past rush lanes and neglect a lot of balls and kind of make a difference that way. Yeah I think it just comes on being disciplined knowing who you're playing against like you said Bill he's a he sure but he's very elusive I mean he can he is making throws I mean he get out the parking to everything so I think for us we just got to discipline and just continue to just meet with Coach Jay me with the coach knows and understand how we can just eliminate that. I should about you and Jack I mean your personality seems to be a little different you more on the quiet side he's how well you've played together four years both five store guys kind of describe your relationship with him friendship with him and just kind of how you cop with each other. Man that's my brother like you said we're different but very alike
think outside like you said he's louder I'm quiet but you know once we're on that field we're like the same person we'll do anything for this team you know we'll die for our players and we'll give everything we got. Room together for four years correct? Yeah fall camp? yeah sometimes go over there so go over there. We have our share of days when we when I'm neat he's neat or you know we might both be messy but we do we do a good job yeah I'd probably say I would better kick the jack though. Tony Gurgman like I held when you're playing a team for the second time and that was almost a season to go by now. How much of are you at square one with with the scouting and preparation or how much do you take from that game how much do you avoid taking so that you don't have any pre-heat and seat notion to much of going up against offense on the offense. I say it's it's pretty 50-50 I mean that game like you said it was a while ago but at the same time they elevated as a team and so did we so we understand that they they had they made some changes for sure you know there's
there's a certain density we can take back from that game but we also understand that they went on a low run after that and we can see that they elevated as offense so we just got to continue to watch those games dissect the other games and just continue to see what stands out and what they change from the past game. We got a couple calls on zoom that will wrap up with first we have Nick Hamilton from nightcast media Nick. I just wanted to ask you basically about the synergy of this defense and how you guys were able to not only celebrate the triumphs but get through the adversity be able to be this top notch defense that you are in college football today. Here's the question one more time yeah no problem. I wanted to ask you about the synergy you are we're able to develop over course of the season obviously celebrating the triumphs but also getting through the adversities to where you go all the top notch defense that you all are today. Yeah I mean like you said that we went through a lot of trials to trials but there's
also there's a lot of things we can take away from all the wins and losses and from those those wins we understood that hey we can be the best defensive country and from those losses we understand that there's still things that need be fixed and I think when you take all that in at once that comes out to the the common goal or the common talk which is you can there's always learning points everywhere and depending how we dissect those games or how we just continue to come as one and elevate you know we continue to just collect all those those learning points and just continue to grow from them. Man one final question Joey Coffin Columbus dispatch Joey. JT what have what have you guys done better in the especially in the Tennessee game and just late in the season you think about turning some of the the pressures that you've got on a quarterbacks in the sacks and getting home in some of those situations. Yeah I think it was more just understanding the defense as a whole understanding everybody's job thing as the season went on we
had to understand that you know we have to know what's going on the back can we have to know what's going on the linebacker crew to understand what plays we have room with freedom and I think once we understood that and got a better understanding of the of everybody's job I mean it it showed display because you know everybody knows what each other's doing it's not like the lineback's know what they're doing and the corners and be I they know only their job I think we all know each other's job and we continue to ask each other questions on you know if they're listening how they can get to the quarterback and you know if I'm dropping and playing quarterbacks by I can ask Cody on how to open field tackle so you know we just we just kind of lean on each other's understanding because you know like I said like Denzel knows how to play corner-bending then I know how to play corner so you know he has more more wisdom at that position than I do. JT thank you very much. Definitely a little bit of both obviously I just wanted the team to win I think we got a chance
to win not definitely towards it into the stretch that last drive I was a couple plays here a couple calls that he maybe should have gotten but I think the frustration more so it just comes from you know wanting to win more anything. He said he was a little surprised so much attention you got right away from your defense I have a view. Yeah definitely though we maybe killed a more one-on-ones kind of how the game playing was set up. You didn't got like different covers on the cloud to my side and this is kind of how the game goes. What's the process been like sometimes where whatever reason just just see that. Yeah definitely especially in color there's a lot of the game fans defensively were tick me away you know they had a lot of success I was they obviously were one of the boys having different the weapons kind of still get the victories and I was yeah you continue to do better jobs doing it here. Why is the communication the process been like post-game getting on the same page with Kyler just you guys exchange taxed or you guys didn't know. Yeah they're filming definitely kind of asking what did I see there kind of go
over and play and I just how I get him what I saw and kind of different feedback there. Change words. Mark I get it we're asking questions about the previous game bar are you the type of guy to let a game like that winger or how do you flush it. You got to move on got to move on some long season got like 16 more of them hopefully no I can stay healthy throughout the year and just continue to build and get better each week. You guys did so much work throughout the off season to get on the same page how different is it when you get into that regular season. Yeah it's totally different it's totally different um you can do a lot of things you know in shirts and shorts and then once you go out there put practice and get pads on you do like the the point practice you do with the colds but there's nothing like actually going out there and live action and really trying to get a same case so I think that would really shift with the team to develop and it would be better. Did it just a matter of rubs them as much as anything. Yeah I do definitely definitely um like I said I was kind of my first live action together um so I can continue with when you're early impressions on it. I'm gonna feel together
yeah but now obviously I have a death respect no JG's call or preseason and I obviously would be also really healthy that's kind of the most important thing that I was to get a lot of healthy going forward so um that's it I can say. Marvin why are you early impressions of the Rams what do you think of the Rams? Yeah I mean they're a good team they're good physical team I got a new lot of new guys up front I think that's kind of where they're strong so it is kind of a little different to Buffalo come over a little match coverage so I'm excited to build this one. Personally when the belts take you one of them it's how do you sell today? Yeah wasn't many of them. Wasn't many of them so uh I thought I could be good. I'm sure you think game versus just playing you're not getting a preseason game actually. Definitely definitely thinking a lot out there and um yeah I think I'll come with reps think to think and less and just going out there and playing definitely come with reps and it's something you're out and get better at but um I think definitely say I was thinking a lot Is there anything you can do to prove that that's where I covered anything you did in the past?
Because you're you're going to face that a lot obviously. Yeah I mean you just got to team you get open for yourself make yourself you're self-available uh and when the ball does get away making the play um this he's just taking you away that means other guys are having a chance to get open so that's how kind of how I look at it it's no longer since it's you know offense that's the best thing of course. That kind of thing would be with Kylo. Is this something that comes pretty quickly in a new game or something like that? Hopefully sooner or later I think um I'll continue to see we'll see I don't think we're in a bad place right now at all obviously I don't really think that but uh just a live reps will continue to grow and show. So that's kind of how I want to be going on um really my whole life I want to get I felt team captain like specifically and I felt I wasn't a captain in high school
wasn't a captain in college but I want to make a joke because I was in high school so yeah I feel like I'm not going to get a captain like it's that I felt yeah um but that would be awesome you know but you know that happens I'd be great but not either way I want to assume a role as a captain from perspective of guys wanting to be a visual word and to get back to that point. Yeah I mean I can't say that um I mean I guess the biggest thing is that I felt like how you used to move past but it didn't take just the first day LTAs it took train and left and right once this season ended because I don't know what it was going to be so I just went a lot of yeah reps um just to get back to feeling like myself for day one LTAs and then now all first week but now like today specifically just changing some small things with my feet that is it talking about the long coach
some things I'm doing my feet to get to that to sell my nutritional angle that I love to sit on thought even I thought I felt I thought I felt great already but I'm okay I felt even better so I need more exercise tomorrow now I'm getting my feedback and how I like the right side and on the left side so I'm excited I mean obviously I feel like um in the league whether I left the right you're still going in Premier guys obviously the high expectations for the left hand on tackle but um there's definitely like the level of energy and like the expectation definitely taking the human side because now compared to blind side that's the as a detackle well you know so um so yeah I would say in terms of communications far as this even outside of the facility you just stuff like that like really creating that but tackle quarterback body more off the field I think has been something that's even the cool I got the text one day
as I had you put it up I was like you know yeah I've been training both I've been training both you know I I asked after the season they're like honestly you know we'll talk to you supplement season and I just got a text on how does what the free agency then so I was like you know what I have Oseason right tackle so if I get the word I'm going I'm standing right tackle I'll just do what I did before I'm built on that but I saw I was like I might as well as training the left tackle now as if I'm going to be left tackle and I'd rather do that than training on right time with the color you know what I mean so I'm like let me just prepare an advance I was like yeah it's got you know I think occasionally on third down there'd be a lot of twists that was just not like it's automatically good and I think that was my mindset for like the first half of the season like I didn't have to go once again with surprise like oh my gosh they did that I try to figure like okay like this is this is the type of rush I mean again this is how
this guy usually rushes if I get the vibe this is how the ends like the rush you know tackles that first year guys you got the premier patch on already you know what it was going to be already you know every stud and honestly just knowing that's kind of an advantage to so you're not you're not you're not oh the brother twist on my side it was never air dog but it come out the hot like three plays in a row in two minutes I do that you know what I mean I'm watching more everybody else and he rarely really goes out there occasionally third down I was like you know what I mean so that's kind of it's also kind of an engine away but it's also exciting okay I'm gonna get the hardest look you know those are real real reps you know really out on our way to kind of process that I was like hey when they tell me let me know about I'm just gonna train it I was training all left to TAs I guess if I didn't hear anything about TAs I came in like
so you know what I mean because just like I'm cool with training both continuing I would have been cool training both continually but I feel like anybody any position will be like okay like you want as soon as possible give your feet kind of settle in your hips settle in your hands so then a certain kind of way we've been hard to get you work both very healthy you know but they're definitely but sometimes the development um definitely a lot faster to stay on one side but I think having that the weeks that we had the transitional seasons over you know good um contract me up what I'm gonna try to have any weak things at a time right now but when it comes back I'm gonna show them the one house I've got a house not too far from so I told them I got the house like I could yell outside that DJ you know I mean so yeah that's doesn't have any stock
or anything doesn't mean anything so um we're we have to play on Friday and that's really all that matters we're gonna take two more from zoom before turning it back our first one's gonna come from Stephen from Cleveland dot com go ahead the fun I'm sorry hey Caleb we've seen you were talking about the Ohio State Office the success that they've had obviously Jeremiah has been a big part of that what's it been like this year going against him in practice and you know after doing that there's a surprise at all to see him having a success he's had as a freshman no it doesn't bring surprises it was pretty pretty easy to see the talent that he has and the blessings that God has put on his plate but it's always a it's always a challenge going against Jeremiah and the other receivers and Mecca and Karnelen practice and even guys like Brandon and his impression Rogers they do a great job bringing looks for the defense and create a lot of obstacles I found a question from zoom is gonna come from Dan Hope go ahead Dan Caleb you Quinn had a lot of success against you guys when
you played him at Alabama last year just what do you remember from going up against him last year and what can you learn from that game really smart quarterback knows how to operate their offense post the ball in the right places and then of course our keys and does a great job putting him in position to win all right back to you yeah thank you Rob all our Columbus this match Caleb JT and Jack land opposite sides and they is opposite off the field as they are on in terms of personality and just the people they are they're offices but they also like one of the closest people I know they spend a lot of time together they've come from different sides of the country so they're different people for sure but they're both really great people are really great men sorry I respect both of them I'm not gonna do that I'm sorry I'm not gonna do that
throughout the throughout the season we would always see you on Wednesday nights you and late and we'll be some of the last people off the field for the things that you're working on after a practice always the same is it a routine what are the things that you're hoping to get out of those extra moments after practice so routine pretty much the keys that we need to go into the game with and then also changes week to week on based on what our jobs are gonna put us into doing so every week we go through the same things and then we add certain things that we do for the week for the what the team that we play is gonna ask us a comment Bill we've been on Columbus this yeah I already got one here okay do it go up and Columbus this back Kelvin one takes us to use his play action and basically use play action a fair bit what's what do they do well and those spots and what's the key for you guys in those moments with Quinn they do a really good job with I candy and it creates a lot of challenges for defense in order to see if it's
runner path and see because that's when they're gonna take those shots too as well so really just having great eye discipline seeing the line is seeing what is telling us so that's what it does keep right Nick Walker Letterman role hey you guys had a pretty good game plan for Tyler Warren when you guys play you guys have another Texas has a good tight end and Gunnar Hound what are you guys gonna have to do to limit him and how do you think about his game he's a really good player he makes a lot of plays and he's has a lot of receiving yards this year so really just do the same thing we've done all year just be disciplined in our responsibilities and if you're on him you got to make a play when it comes right one of the major builders claim on dot com when you look at their receivers it's kind of a whole you know they spread ball around seems like a lot of what stands out about you know the way that they can spread ball around those different guys a lot of really good athletes I play with Isaiah Bond last year who's a really great receiver a lot of
speed and then all the receivers have made a lot of plays so I mean everybody has to be on that peasy queue as if we're gonna stop them and have it do a really good job. Front row here Tim May Letterman role yeah Kale but you moved up here and I don't have to tell you when you moved basically a year ago and stuff it was a little bit of a leap of faith because you know you know how many athletes are on this team get athletes to stuff but when did you really feel this defense come into its own and then then pass that man watching in the Rose Bowl you're you're recognition of what was coming seem to be on point did it feel like that I mean you personally I think the defense has played really well throughout the season I think we've had games where we played better and games where we haven't put it all together but I think that's how all defenses are so I can't say there's a certain moment where I think we put it together but was it second party question you seem really on point against Oregon about recognizing what
was what was coming I mean you were really active out there directing and things like that did it feel like that I guess I feel like as Luke said earlier the preparation that we put in goes into that and just feeling comfortable and what we're doing comfortable what we're seeing with the other teams I feel like that's a that allows us to play fast and can me and Laketon to communicate to everybody else do I miss anyone for questions here Steve how long and 24 seven sports yeah Caleb but you came to Ohio State to play for national championship and there were a lot of ups and downs throughout the season just to be in this position the last four teams still live just you feel validated by that and did you always have faith that this is how it was going to turn out I came to Ohio State to become a better player and to help the team be as good as it can be not to win a national championship not like that wasn't the only goal for me coming here really just wanted to be in the team and be my be with the brotherhood but it's a great feeling
being in the final four and being with the team and everything that comes with that but it's a blessing to be here and one final question Boomer Ben what's the club is this bad yeah I did want to follow up when I talked to you at that time of the game you said when they scored their first and second touchdown you were really hot on the sidelines what was what was your message to the team and you know that's a good offense they're gonna score against mostly but why were you so hot really just because we didn't execute which let them score so we've done that a lot which is something we can't do in these big games and these games where it's winter go home so we got to make the plays when they come and get our competitive excellence as coach Dases make the play where your numbers call I feel like they're definitely picking up quick I mean I was in their shoes one time and I had Zach Harrison, Javonte and Tyler Friadow all in front of me so I was just trying to be one of those peers that they were for me and kind of just giving them the steps to get there and I feel like they're definitely picking up quick and they're definitely going to be one of the great
freshmen um I feel like all the camps I've definitely got a big course learn and I love that so I asked Coach Jay for I love getting more reps because I just like affecting my craft so I mean some people may not need it some people need it but I mean I just like to give me a rep for some years I mean for me it's always just kind of getting my little details perfectly like my steps my footing kind of just perfecting my toolbox is what we call it my craft and just trying to be a like a win ever every place we're trying to do yeah um definitely just getting stronger faster everything all the above but uh one of my big
things would be a leader and kind of just not trying to look still look up to Jack and JT kind of have my own kind of leadership and be able to bring people into so I feel like kind of have a lot of leaders on the D line and at the D in position so we kind of all kind of just kind of talk to each other and we love it so we all competitive people we all love to fish together and I feel like the springing the best side of all is we're all just kind of bouncing off each other and see what one person does and the kind of build into archival box and we all kind of just kind of build one great thing one you remember last year when you got the shot of the full back and and did they approach you with that idea and you could actually help me out of that come about because you're a good jack saw your clock in okay get a test deck um so I definitely did it in high school I was full back in a little bit of tidan so I feel like it kind of saw
what I could do there in coach Wilson honestly you love watching it too before you left and uh felt you playing that seed in coach day's head and uh coach day kind of just went for it and tried to do the best I could to do it exactly chin ring now I mean uh new playbook I did not know yeah we've got that far um I like to think myself as a football player I can really play any position on the field you need me to just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and uh try to do my best for you Jack you the same thing oh yeah rathly that's why kids is talking to coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations and sort of saw you and got out to have some conversations after jt and jack decided to come back just got to win into those and your perspective and and how did that help you movie get the right mindset I guess community is good um definitely kind of seeing it all the way through I feel like uh people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it how long the season is now what you got to do to prepare for and what happened in all that time
from here to to then so uh I feel like we definitely just coached getting me kind of connected and maybe kind of just talks man oh man and uh he kind of just sent straight to me and I feel like I'm kind of both a person I'm making it yada making each other better every day we got the four best the ends five best the ends honestly and then college football and we're going to be one of the best D lines and college football how do you feel like the better player today anymore game this year um I feel like I'm checking big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader and uh kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in and uh I feel like we kind of helping out more I mean the season goes by so fast already so I mean you're kind of like week 10 in you're like wow it's already week 10 so now it's kind of keep you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of save it because you know you're feeling like I'm fresh with my face crazy
it's here once been on your powder for the first month of the year right there is that that pace yourself that I mean there's a mindset that I did that season yeah definitely definitely gonna have that the mental stability that I hand all those weeks and all those practices how much is Larry talked to you guys about like that last question right here 2016 2017 four and a five different to the dollar so much does he talk to that man I mean he doesn't have to talk about it we know about it we've seen it every day we watch the film we see them all working together we know what it could be we know we could become so we know we we're right at the same right the right place at the right time and God wanted us to be here and he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together and I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together it's something special doing it what what the deliberation surprises even a conversation like it should always be live let's tell you tell you tell you play football so obviously there's a proximity to the season which is it's a little reckless I understand that but in spring when you're
competing for jobs I mean if I'm a quarterback I'm asking to be live so I can show him how I'm different than you know anyone that can't be live you know what I mean they're always trying to find an edge and if you're never fully alive I don't think you fully give guys the opportunity to to be who they want to be or who they can be so that being said you know I will cast my vote but that will not be my final decision on that but I will cast my vote the guys have handled well it was good for all parties involved and more we can do that the better but I'm sure that is coming to a close here very quickly so right uh General Maya off the field we saw after practice on this Saturday that the mob that came to get autographs and things when you're working with him on all these things you're talking about but also dealing with the life of being one of the biggest names in college football how do you help mentor him in that aspect yeah I mean it's a blessing to be able to be in a position where you know can provide insight or I wouldn't say
recommendations but just you know give perspective um well how he chooses to receive the perspective or not one and not me he always does but which is fine but to be in that position is really humbling that being said he does a really good job on his own he doesn't need to check on too much he's really done a great job again the way he was raised in his morals and humble and always sign and taking pictures I'm always trying to be the bad guy for him because he's not going to be and uh just says again more about his character uh but he's not the only I mean he's not the only guy any guy would kind of do that we have a group full of awesome young guys uh but Jeremiah has done a great job with it hang on it and uh it's definitely growing at an exponential rate to say the least but um I think he's built for it and he's been handled at a high level uh but oh those around them we're trying to help him out a little bit yeah what made uh Quincy the first freshman to do this black striped mission uh uh yeah I mean uh that's a good question
I think that uh you know frankly you know I don't I know I'm not really fully involved with that so that can be but I wasn't you know I think that people on the outside would it be defense or even coach day or anybody brought it to my attention you know we're kind of just going about practice and that's our expectation and make plays not make mistakes um and he was starting to make a lot of a lot of plays consistently and I think the consistent level uh that he's been as a person uh being on being on time and and doing what his job description on each play and the ball is coming your way and making some big plays and uh you know it starts it starts being seen by your peers and your peers start asking for it they start barking getting a stripe off all those kind of things that's the ultimate sign of respect I think uh with your peers um you know go to your bat and he's not going for his bat no one uh people are bringing it to your position coach I think it uh speaks volumes of the uh the general respect that you're earning uh through the process so I think it's something like that happened and uh you know as well deserve based on his peers and
the other coaches. Ryan Day was talking about how impressed he's been this spring with Austin Sarovale all that he's been able to do and Tyler Bohn was talking last week about the importance of the cross-training and all that that goes into that just how much have you seen Austin benefit from this spring and everywhere that he's been and how big of a piece do you think he's going to be regardless of where he fits on this offensive line? Yeah I think Austin's been awesome I mean he literally and you know what I'm gonna say he played every split every position which is the move around you know and uh he handles it and you know he's one of those guys I feel like you watch film over and over again day after day and his name never really gets brought up you know in a good way like you know the old line your name gets brought up when uh usually not going as well you know I mean they're literally at the point of the attack on every single play so there's nowhere to hide and so but Austin when his name gets brought up he's like man that was a good job right good job pass off that combo whatever it's always positive and uh they're really impressed with him he started in the winter did a great job through the winter um again continuing to build their respect for his peers
and then he's gonna good job really good job just being uh very consistent to spring. Are left Jeff Gilbert press pros Brian since you've been working more with the whole offense of him comes the quarterback play what has grown in your kind of a appreciation of that position and what those guys have to do and go through what do you think more about those guys versus maybe what he thought before it's just a wide receiver guy yeah I mean I mean there's no just a wide receiver guy if you are just wide receiver guy you won't be a very later on it's all about it's all about quarterback play you know so I think in that same world though to the point is that you know in order to be a great receiver or a great receiver or you know receiver guy whatever you want to call it uh there's only one page it's the quarterbacks page so everything is based off them there whether they're progression they're timing the the stresses they have is what we're trying to minimize so uh if you don't fully understand the quarterback play it's hard to you know maximize receiver play I think you know uh that being said um yeah I'm still always
learning you know I think that uh I can't say anything's jumped out massively right now uh but I would say that uh you know I I guess I would say that the preparation level I mean the what is required to execute and play at a high level it's just not capable in the a lot of time right I mean there's only so much time where I'd be with players if you're not willing to spend you know your own time getting prepared for practice to be uh to maximize one's ability uh there's a good chance you're not going to maximize your ability so you know in other positions I mean align same thing I mean receiver play sometimes can can you know get away from it we do a great job studying and being in the room extra for sure but the requirement of a quarterback to know uh the fixed protections uh the BR run game coordinator based on the calls you know to get us in different checks I mean there's so much they need to know and uh and frankly uh the uh you know the old line's only as good as the quarterback the receiver's line is good as the quarterback the offense is only as good as the
quarterback and it's our responsibility to put guys in position to maximize with their capable of maximizing but their inability uh to notice that they need to spend extra time outside the a lot of time I think it's critical and the amount that it takes I guess that's maybe a little naive but uh the guys are doing a great job doing it. At the time just a couple more coaches got a uh meeting uh Rob all our Columbus dispatch yeah Brian you know you guys reached the mount top you got to ban around their national champs I think you keep these guys grounded being in the moment looking ahead not back do you are you tougher on them because no I think that I mean I think we have a lot of guys you know what I think it's understanding that we were trying to build the map to get to where you wanted to get to but now that we have the map doesn't mean we've traveled the path so like we know what it looks like the guys that are here know what it's supposed to look like the guys that floor us sitting on believe we'll example how to get to where you want to get to um so the focus
is on trying to you know replicate what they just did and how they operated can't say we've done that right now so it's very easy to stay motivating because they already know it's not good enough frankly and so uh the last thing they want to do is put in a ton of effort and then not reach their goals so uh motivation I don't think is needed I think there is a catching up of those and maybe aren't quite sure what it takes you know and but overall um motivation is not what we've needed uh clarity of message is definitely what we've been focused on and uh I think the message is being received so uh not concerned about you know motivation and and the uh uh looking back if you will I think everyone's pretty pretty focused on being forward and knowing we haven't accomplished anything so Steve and me, it's Cleveland Doctor. Who would you say is the leader of your wide receiver in the room right now? Well I would say Colonel Tate, Brennan Innis, probably done the most most outspoken you know in the room uh yeah I would say that they're
doing a good job those are probably the two guys that would jump out my room yep I mean because Brennan he's been in vocal obviously you Carno taking on that role yeah more and being more vocal he's a good football player obviously and he's the under there but that process for him and becoming a more vocal leader took to bring you to say that on him what was the question? Carno like what do you see like the growth of it uh yeah I mean he's I think he's pulled guys aside you know have one-on-one conversations with them uh these locked in uh you know just I think he saw the impact that I met him made and uh the role he played and to think that we're gonna lose that and then be a better group probably doesn't mathematically make sense to him so someone's got to set up in that role and one I don't want to respect some two you know he's capable of it and uh it's just the desire and the appreciation I think to be at the order table now at the orderhead and uh and appreciate the way I met Capri went about his his business and so um he probably valued that appreciated that and he's just being assured we still have that. Find a question better than it to close this back
could you assess the running back room uh I think it's pretty much assumed both those running backs to CJ and uh and uh James think that's hand in systems probably the way you better go again how do you think it's working and you see third and maybe fourth guys up in them there? I think that you know in college football uh in a football any football really you got to have depth in running back room I think that uh it's very apparent in the NFL it's usually a two-backed system you know very very rarely is it one guy uh but in college I think we saw the benefit of that last year uh the ability to compliment each other is really important the ability for us to identify what they do great and put them in good positions to be what they are uh what their best that I should say uh it's really important as a coaching staff it's been very impressed with uh even the younger guys Sam and and uh Bo and the way they've come along um the consistency so what you're chasing right you're always able to that's why you're here but how often you do it ultimately dictates how much you play so but uh overall I think locksmen on them they'd understand
the standard and in pass pro and uh not being a guy we got to sell them out because you can't pass protect so we were blessed what especially with Trey last year and and Quen Sean so um but no these guys are done a good job they're competing uh they've been very coachable uh you know it's it's it's shown a plot on film um but uh yeah I mean it's always hard on backs I mean every opportunity you get to go live and and break tackles really gives you the most feedback on what these guys are capable of you're just playing tag out there you never get any art at least you shouldn't uh but the running backs um you know on contact days it's done a good job James has done a really good job growing really excited about him everyone's really excited about him and CJ so uh you know I think ultimately now group the uh how good will all go with the group B is probably based on you know the top the bottom rising right I mean you're gonna have some guys at the top but you know where's the floor and so I think uh uh Bo and Sam has got a done really
good job and many some more guys to get healthy and more more guys on campus but uh very encouraged and you saw him improve and then um McLean I think is a is a great plus I mean he is a guy that has football intelligence he's picked it up you know he's kind of of those incoming freshmen who still should be in high school he's a guy I think you're gonna point to and you can see right now he's gonna be a player over to the right Austin Ward the podcast a healthy Mitchell Melton how does he fit in for your defense what does he bring to it yeah he's you know Mitch is that combination player you know in um in our four down um you know he's a guy that can do a lot of things uh drop fold in there and make plays you you see some of that all the time really athletic um you know we're kind of loaded at that end position so he's gonna play there but you know like I said last
year we we haven't needed it but he's a guy you would point to along with CJ Hicks you know for the for the long season um people get injured you get a little light inside it's always hard on the defensive tackles but if you're gonna play with uh three ends you know that Mitch is a guy who definitely can do all that he has that over to the left Joey Kaufman Columbus dispatch Jim you've talked about this before but I think in past years where you're going up against a really talented receiver group offense to encourage your players to it's not okay if they give up the play and to go nearly almost the first half today where you the offense didn't get in the end zone until the late in the second half just and you guys have guys down the second area just what what did you think of that sort of trend and how it's evolved and the way you guys almost shut him out of the first that yeah I think it's become um you know an expectation now um you know our DB's you know our BIA best in America we led the country in past defense right I think uh it was 96 what I uh what I
got here and it was number one last year so they've they've taken that spirit so it's a competitive spirit it's an expectation now it doesn't matter who we're going against it's it's they they view it as a standard so that was good to see in the first first half over to the right Spencer Holbrook Letterman role Jim we've talked about safety changing the way that you play defense in the Leo and the linebackers but how much does having the depth that you guys have a defensive tackle change the way that you can do things defensively yeah I mean you're gonna play to your strengths you know and uh that's that's my job is to what do we have and what do we do best and when you have defensive tackles um but I've said it before it it helped our defense so much last year when you have defensive tackles that actually make tackles which is what we have right now it changes the way you call a game you know it certainly helps you be um in better shape on explosive
plays on the back end you don't have to do a whole lot to help those guys out because they're making tackles so you got to go you got to go with that you know you got to you got to let those guys play and and and they're good so um you can't get too far away from the scheme of having those defensive tackles make place because they're doing it and it works uh over to the left Tony Gurdman Buckeye Huddle Jim Ryan talked about the quarterback run being more of a thing with the offense here during the season how much of uh when you're facing a team like that how much does that impact your day to day throughout the week preparing for that yeah it's a ton you know it I think it changes everything you do on defense um you see it everywhere from the NFL on down if you have a quarterback who can make plays with his feet your scheme better be designed that you know to to take that away into account for it so it changes the way you look at everything when you're game planning thank you Donovan over here to the right uh Tim May the Tim May podcast when I asked uh Ryan about just
for example Calvin Simpson Hunt but the uh corner scene did we play in almost with the chip owner shelter to a certain extent I mean Davis and Nick Benoson took today personally it looked like you know to make is uh some of the height going into the game but what what do you see from that group in particular that uh Buie's you going into this offseason yeah when you can when you have corners that you can count on again it's just like having defensive tackles in the run game when you have corners you can count on that are going to compete all the time no matter what the situation is and we've developed that again it changes the way you call the entire game I mean you you're able to leave those guys on an island um you're able to switch out coverages and they know what they're doing and they take great pride in it so um having those guys out there in the development it's a big deal it really is yeah I mean he's he did come in late and you know um he compete he's
one of those guys that just competes every day doesn't say much you know he's trying to live up to the standard of the other guys and you you see him coming along you know you see him step by step coming along and and you know put him in a you know competitive atmosphere same step up that's a great sign and final question for coach Knowles Dan Hope 11 Warriors you mentioned CJ Hicks a few minutes ago have you seen him take the strides you need to see the spring to trust him as a guy who could be a potential starter on his defense yes I mean uh I think CJ has shown that uh he has talent and I think it's my job to put him in the best situations for him because he can be a force um you know he's much better when he's bloodsing or he's directed because he's able to use his athletic ability but he has certainly shown that he's going to be able to help this defense coach thank you very much for your time all right and uh we will bring
uh offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Chip Kelly to the podium now we'll open up the questions over to the left bill Rebenowitz Columbus dispatch at Chip um what are your just general impressions of the offense coming out of spring especially quarterback we'll look at all 15 so I think you know um this day is is a big part of it you know because it was the first time they were got to play some of those guys that were got to play in from the crowd and that was an amazing crowd and you need to get 80,000 for spring game now you could see some of the young guys kind of looking around like wow this is different than the indoor um but that's what they have to get ready to play it so um we got better from practice one practice 15 you know it's still an evaluation through the whole process but um it's not something in in the players bill to the we're not making a decision walking off the field today saying hey this is the direction that we're going in we'll we'll be very authentic and and look through everything and make sure that we get a really good feel for what it all looks like and then who will best move this offense that's that's what our decision is going to be so I do I think we got a lot of guys there um that part's tough I think
because you got you there's guys that deserve reps you know and they're all competing for it so you know sometimes you'd like to be sometimes when you had a guy who was an initial starter well he's going to get the bulk of the reps to get him better but um they capitalize on it we really rolled them you know if you were at some of our screen practices you're watching all those guys rotate and rotate out um and as we talk about all the time you know the old adj is don't count your reps make your reps count you know and we'll put it all together and really come up with you know which guy do we really feel is going to make gonna help us move this offensively over to the far right bill landis the podcast kings of the north hey chip um you some of me first talked you that the the basis of a lot of your success running the football just kind of figuring out what your guys do best and then leading into that over 15 practices now how good of a field do you think you have for that and then what are the next few months look like as you try to piece that all together really good question um it's it's interesting because the one thing that I think sometimes makes it tough and an evaluation is what a good front we want to get um you know so
for 15 practices those guys on the other side of the ball were pain you know jack and jt and tileek and those guys but I know come fall there's not gonna be anybody more happy that we have those guys on the defensive side of the ball because of what they can do so um I still think what we'll have to really evaluate that what we're good at what we're not what we got to get better on what we got to work on but I think the work we got against such a quality defense was uh was really key for us uh over to the far left nathan baird cleveland dot com so you were going this time um came out of the spring with still a lot of question marks about the offensive line um and even I guess that last season came out with question marks what have you seen that progress in the time that you've been here and and what's your confidence level that that offensive line is gonna allow this offense to do everything it wants to do this fall yeah I mean I've been here short amount of time so I didn't know I really don't have anything to compare to so I kind of tabula rasa come in with a blank slate and just observe it I think we're really athletic um I think goddy and and and Seth and those guys inside are really smart and really
intelligent um they allow you to to be able to make adjustments in game um just tucking football with some of those guys it's like well there's these guys are wired the right way and a lot of those guys have played a lot of football so um they can bank on their experience there you know I think we we've got about four guys that have played significant amount of snaps and we got to make sure we can find out who the fifth guy is um but that's similar to where the quarterback spot is I think and I also think in the offensive line you you're not gonna play a 16-17 game season and just playing with five guys you know you really have to develop your depth there um there's gonna be a number two center that's gonna play a lot of football it's gonna be a number two guard whether it's on either side of the ball there's gonna be a third tackle I think you you're gonna get tested especially with this new in this new playoff format you really have to think that way so you know you're not looking for five starters you're really looking for 10 starters because you're gonna have to you're gonna have to probably play 10 guys to get when you get through a 16-17 game season over to the right Austin Ward the podcast chip I think it was the first play of the game the T-formation and then the reverse I don't know spin move with Will Howard under what's the
inspiration for that package and that sort of uh rink of what the quarterback mr. Hayes do you have uh there's a looming figure around this whole program you know we get to go to work every day and the Woody Hayes athletic center so um it was good enough for Woody we're gonna stay there we we're gonna do it we ran some last year I think we took 21 snaps at UCLA and T been a short yardage formation for us and we've done some different things with it but um also I think our players had a lot of fun you know practicing that and doing some different things so um it's a small part of our offense you know we will not be in the T 21 times in one game but you know we may get it in some short yardage situations and I think it's come back there's a lot of schools right now that um are starting to do that you know it's really just you're trying to you know you got a half a yard to get you know you're trying to get your big guys in the game and I think we use three tight ends and two running backs in our formation today with Packard being the the full back in that situation so um there's a lot of different things you can do in short yardage but um a little bit of a tribute to coach coach Hayes and and then what he means in this program.
Joey Kaufman Columbus dispatch over to the left. Chip did you look back now you've been here two months 15 spring practices or something you feel best about what you've been able to accomplish with this offense? Well I haven't accomplished anything because I didn't take a snap but um I think the most impressive thing since I've been here is how close close this football team is you know some programs talk about a brotherhood this is really a brotherhood um our practices as we talked about how good our defense is it's they're highly competitive but they're not combative and those guys really work very very well together both the whole line in the D line the secondary and the receivers um the competition is the but it's got to be the best there is in the country you know and that makes you better but I think sometimes competition you know guys can lash out and it gets really combative and then all of a sudden the fight breaks out and the fight breaks out and we're trying to accomplish and get footballed on but I think the way these guys cooperating work together as a group uh as a special bond and I think you're you're going to need the the closest team and the most connected teams on the ones that win uh over to the right here Andy Baxter and Letterman
Jay Bobbyssad there's been a lot of talk about Jeremiah but Ameca is the big return in this group he kind of reminded everyone what he can do today what's it been like working with him and what kind of weapon can he be for you guys good point and Ameca has reminded me and the other 14 practice sessions of what he can do special player you know and and and JJ is a really talented player also but you know I think I think all of the the whole group and Cornell tape did some really good things watching him this spring and for all of them you know I mentioned it with the offensive line I came in with a blank slate you know I had no opinions formed not that really just wide-eyed and just observant but you know that I think that wide receiver is really special and I I think there's a bunch of guys in there and again when you have to play multiple multiple games after the regular season is over you're gonna make sure you're gonna need depth like that and the fact that it's you feel a little bit comfortable right now that we got some guys there that can make some plays on the perimeter and that really dictates how people are gonna defend you you know so you got a couple really good running back you know so are they gonna load the box are you really
gonna load the box and leave those guys in one on one coverage well then it's the quarterback responsibility to decipher that and get the ball of those guys so or do they at least a double coverage they list a double coverage and now it's a little bit lighter boxing you can run the ball so having too many weapons is a is a good problem to have second roll left pat Murphy 24-7 sports chip we've talked a lot about kind of the quarterbacks maybe vying for the the story spot but some of the younger guys what have you seen from them we got an opportunity to see more of them today than we probably have what's your assessment of them as they kind of get in this I always am so impressed with young guys that enroll early in watching how they get acclimated and what they do you know when you look at Julian and Aaron and JJ you know they should be in the hot lunch line of their high school and they're out here playing in front of 80,000 people and they've really progressed when you watch them in meetings and listen to them and they interpret you know so basically the whole concept here is we throw them in the deep end and see if they can
swim you know this we didn't baby anything we don't put the install in with hey you guys are in stop we're an install this with the older players and then you guys you know go set at the kitty table and we're just gonna do the really simple things with you you know we're they get it all in the more they can digest the more when you're in a room when you're checking for understanding and asking questions and they can spit back to you the more confidence you have when they get in there with the plays that you can call for them so those guys have been in process they're still learning you know they were the the guys today that were kind of looking around and saying wow there's like 80,000 people here along with the offensive coordinator and the quarterback coach because I was kind of looking around because I had actually never been in the stadium until yesterday when we had our 14th practice in there so I played Ohio State once when I was at Oregon but that was in the Rose Bulls high had never been actually in the stadium until yesterday so I caught myself when I went into the stadium today looking around saying 80,000 for spring game that's impressive Got time for just a few more folks over here to the right Dylan Davis Delaware Gazette
given what you just said about throwing them into the deep end what stood out the most to you about Julian's progression through 15 practices and where he is as you guys head out of spring Julian is a very fast processor you know he really thinks very very quickly on his feet like he he makes really quick decisions he doesn't stick on and read he can progress and any sees things really well for for a young player you know and not having been exposed to a lot of college defenses and especially what Jim does you know Jim can make Jim can make a young freshman quarterback cry with some of the stuff he does but you know I never saw that with Jules and I that's been in press of his his ability to retain and you know him and JJ the compliment I would say them is if you got here and you didn't know what class they were and you wouldn't say that those guys were freshmen in terms of how they've picked things up and you know sometimes freshmen act like freshmen but the guys who are special they don't act like freshmen you know they act like
their football players and those are two guys that are examples of that far left Cameron T. Robinson the athletic chip you on the topic of freshmen James people's exam got around the second half you talk about how deep you need to be in this era of college football but as you search for RB3 what did you see from them today and what is what is their growth been like in this spring yeah James really flashed early for for me not knowing again kind of let's just take don't worry about what the background is where they're from who they are the this guy of this stars this guy of that stars it's they're all bakais and there's how they do and I think James has got really good field and vision he can hit things I thought San did some really good things today T.C. is another guy who really came along during the spring and in work constantly talking in our staff meetings about depth we're very cognizant of the fact that the playoff situation has changed so you have to develop that depth you know used to be maybe have a parent of spare was what everybody says but I think you may have to have more than that you're talking about 16-17
games you're you're really going to be tested that way so I was really happy with with how those young guys have come along here in the 15 training sessions that we've had over here to the right Tim May the Tim May podcast thank you Jerry you have your own podcast yeah like these guys all have like a name next to their team name okay let's be cool he must have some juice if you got you got your name in your podcast definitely okay by the way I like it it's not just the lunch last hot lunch last it's a hot lunch line yeah just two quickies number one do you feel compelled to let these quarterbacks know where they stand here you know it's coming up Tuesday you know to me they're yeah you know where does that go I mean in your mind yeah we're all sit down as a staff and visit meet on it and then nine maybe he does an unbelievable job of I think all our players understand where they fit and what what the picture is and we'll give him our assessment this isn't you know we're not going to come back but we do it after every day they know where they stood after practice one after two after three after four we grade everything they're getting
constant feedback in terms of where we are and then after 15 which we had today but but we we can't do it unless you watch the film and can can really look at the the things because you may see something but you're on the sideline you know why did he make that decision well I couldn't really see the field safety from where he was okay now I understand why you made that decision so you know what what but they'll we'll have meetings with all our players and that's that's always been the method so this week during you know between one day through Friday we're all scheduled no one's going on the road recruiting until after that but we're all a player meeting said every position you know offensive line defensive line linebacker safety is everybody everybody's going to sit down with their position coaches and know where they fit and we see them but do you feel a pressure with with the transfer portal looming I mean you've been a head coach for a long time I mean is that on your mind at Tuesday yeah I think all the words you got to wear of it and I'm 100 percent and I don't think it's pressure but I think you just open lines of communication and everybody knows you know which what your evaluation was through the training sessions that we have
guys we got to have we got real quick got last two questions Dan Hope and then Rob Aller feel like you need to have a starting quarterback named by and whatever the biggest things you're going to be looking for between now and then and determining who that guy's going to be well between now and and whatever then is we're not allowed as coaches to go back out and practice with him you know in college football you get 15 training sessions in the in the offseason and then they'll go back to working with Mick in the in the weight room and getting bigger getting faster getting stronger they'll have organized activities themselves and they they do a really good job of that but once there's a football out like we're not allowed to be there to evaluate and even assess so they're really from a football standpoint on their own until August so you always want to do it earlier but I also believe every time I've been involved in this is that it kind of happens organically and authentically you know because the players know and if you say hey we decided we're going to be with Joe and they all think it's
Tim you know they know they're in the locker room with them every day players players understand you know who they'd feel is the guy and most of the time it the decision is very obvious you know when you just say hey this is where we are with it you know but there's that timetable thing I don't I don't I can't give you an exact timetable on that so Rob Chip you talked about Julian but typically in your experience you've done again like Tim said a long time how long does it take for the game to slow down for for a young QB I think it depends on the individual you know I've had some kids where early you know you're like wow Marcus Murray Odo was like that remember vividly second practice and he got to the fifth reading the progression and threw it out here in this big game and I asked him why I do it all I like I asked why because I don't understand it why did you do that and he goes I don't know what we call that defense but there was like a lot of guys over there and they didn't seem like there was anybody over there
but for him to process at that time he was right and he came back the other day whether that was cover six the other day coach like I learned what you guys call the coverage is but it all happens differently I've got guys that for two years seem like they're just you know they're really struggling and then the light bulb goes off and you know whoa like they got it so everybody has different learning styles you know our job and the evaluation process is to identify those learning styles so you know they're cognitive learning they're an auditory learner you know do they learn by field is it is it more a field guy you know a more film guy you know it's all different and I think we have to keep poking and prodding and in in in for us as coaches that's the challenge too is what is their best learning style and how can we convey it because education basically is just the transportation knowledge but it really doesn't matter what I know or what Ryan knows it matters what they know so that's that's always kind of what we're working on and study it and thinking about and kind of where we are and how much can they handle and then how much is too much you know
because this may be a great play I agree 100% but if you don't feel it's a good play then then why is it in you know I mean and that's that's this whole feeling out process that we're all they're learning awesome we're learning them so I have identities so to coaches really running quarterbacks that's something you've always sort of lean toward or is it year by year case by case what advantages do you like about because all your guys can run a little bit yeah I think a running quarterback causes problems for defense so when when plays break down the unscheduled plays you know if you just go back to the recent Super Bowl on that last drive the two big plays were my homes run the petrol my homes is not a runner and he's not calling design quarterback runs for Pat but when the defense matches up and plays two men and turns their back to the quarterback well maybe the best decision is to take off you know the second one he took out I'm like he may score you know a lot of guys go and they want a hook side you know and and there's times where you have
to understand if you do have a running quarterback and we talk about the best of the best ability is availability you know you're not low on your shoulder and taking people on but we are always looking for quarterbacks that have the ability to run we're not looking for running backs that can throw you know so you're not going to see us 20 times a game we're running the quarterback there are people that run it offensive styles and are really successful with it but with this group we have right now that's not now they can hurt you with the feet will did it when he was at case date you know obviously Devon took off a couple times today air took off a couple times today Lincoln's a really really good athlete Julian can run but you know we're not calling design quarterback runs you know you're not going to see you know I tremendous for matter respect for coach Hayes and the legacy that he left here the straight T is about as far as we go we are not going single wing so we are not going to snap and run quarterback ISO and quarterback power so but it is a it's another weapon you know and if it also keeps defense is honest you know if your defense event is going to continue to bend from the quarterback closing he's on the edge
and he's getting first downs within the defensive and has to stay outside and contain the quarterback well then we can run the ball up and and hand the ball off sometimes in our running game our quarterback really is a blocker he's responsible for a defender if the defender was cheating and fitting in on the run well then his responsibility is to make make the defense be honest and and that's really air did that a couple times today and we had a block that safety was sticking his face in there so we're took off around the edge what happens in next play the defense is wider than what we have to do we have to get a chance to hand the ball off to the running game great coach thank you so much for your time and thank you for being a buck I all right thanks it was definitely addressed here you know this pretty easy I think Austin Saribel stepped up in a big way you know with Donnie being out and and then you know you know Carson can can play both guard and center which is good and you know we've actually you know send has done a nice job as well but it was good to see Austin you know he moved from guard to tackle a couple times and even with the ones he was in there battling his tail off so I think we have built some depth there but again you know we got to go play some games and see
yeah you know again whether it's whatever happened last year is last year but I know that the message to our to our offensive line is we want to play I want to be the hardest playing offense line in the country now we've got to play with technique but at the end of the play like knock the line of scrimmage back and play with your hair on fire as hard as you possibly can there's a lot to go with the playing in the offensive line it's all the communication there's a lot of things that have to get into place I think Seth has done a nice job of communicating and understands the offense better now he takes control up front and brings everybody together well which is great but but to me like that's it now we could list a bunch of other things but to me we've got to move the line of scrimmage we've got to be just playing with our hair on fire and knocking people back and playing physical and that's the start to game that's the ending game you know we've got to be a good player in the system I think that we should have the best
offensive line in the country that's that's the standard here has been for a long time and you know and so you know we'll keep pushing towards that this year and you know I think you know everybody in our room it's the same thing Tony Garbin Brian how's the situation with real linebacker you should look for it right now I don't know if I see that ball but it's good yeah so Sonny has really stepped up and played well he's made this transition from safety to linebacker very well I think he did a nice job in the spring but you could definitely see as he went into the the summer it's just you know bigger stronger being more comfortable closer to the line of scrimmage it's different when you're closer to the line of scrimmage I was doing a better job getting his you know hands on on you know on offense alignment and getting off of blocks and using a better job going a better job with his hands I think he understands the communication the linebackers always have to be involved at the front they can be involved and fitting to the back end he's doing that you know I think he's he's you know looking forward to play
playing in the game and you know getting an idea of what it all looks like but I can tell you in practice he's playing fast he's playing violent and I think he's you know he does a nice job of taking the meeting in the field being very intentional about his work but playing really hard yeah I haven't talked to Jim because you know we'll make that final decision here over the weekend but he's certainly leader in the club boss can you tell Ryan I mean Seth McLaughlin can tell he's been there done that is he as he projected that to the offensive line you're still and I'm safe with a leadership stand going a grown man yes how does that just come up how does that show up a bunch of ways it just poise it's not getting rattled when you know coach parks at you it's you know okay I got this let me get it under control it's seeing something in practice and being able to adjust on the move it's being prepared when you walk on the field it's recognizing how hard you have to play at the position it's you know kind of all of those things
into one but he's got great communication up front he talks to the guys he's moving quickly in there and when you have experience like he has you know the game seems to slow down at times yet you know he seems to be playing it off you got a fast lover hey there was a point where you got a black stripe off and I feel like you took a step in the right direction when you come in in the summer it is very difficult to get on the field especially early in the season whether he does or not I will see but if he continues to practice the way that he's been practicing then he'll give himself a chance to be in a rotation midway through the season or later in the season which is similar to some of the wider series he's packed before you know you've seen some of those guys get some reps really in the season but then make an impact later in the season I think that's probably more his path right now now you know he shows up
and starts doing great and you know we'll you know we'll give him the reps he deserves or like Jeremiah is in a different situation because he came in here in January and he was a little bit ahead anybody who comes in and January to me I don't look at them as a freshman anymore they've been here they're in the program and we expect them to contribute to the program and it's a matter of course for the coach there and it's not a major thing still in there right there I'm talking and communicating but in the scrimmages we've had it's you know it's it's been offense very defense so I've mostly been in the offensive side still kind of going through all those types of things and there's a lot to work through this year just with the play clock and then to want to mean that is close to play communication inside of 15 goes off. There's a lot of things that go on there. We don't really get
notification on that. So I'm trying to just help chip with that and some communication that way, personnel. But I'm going to very much involve with special teams. I think with a two minute warning, there's some strategic things that are going to go on again and again that have been really involved with. But to your point, just overall, just looking guys in the eye and making sure that, you know, they have to right look in their eye that, you know, they understand, you know, with the situation, what's going on in the game. You know, I think that happens sometimes with young players, you know, they're just like playing the next play. And that's not just how it works. We'll get to win the situations. And so, all those things will come into play and make an in-game adjustments, you know, be involved with all three faces, you know, watching the game on a tablet to try to identify what happened in the last series. I think all those things will be happening. Right now, Nick is going to be the starter. And, you know, that competition will go into next week. But right now, as we head into the weekend, he is the starter.
And the plan is ready to go. The first hundred of all up and go inside of him. Exactly. He's got a strong leg. He's made it a good transition into the country, but also just playing, you know, football and not Australia, but football, which is very, very different. The, you know, snap to kick has really improved. You know, that was one thing. He's a taller guy. So the ball has to get out of this, you know, get off his foot faster. I think he's done that his hand time has been good. And he's been more consistent. You'll see, you know, he'll kick a few, just go right out of the stadium and then you just got a strong, strong leg. So we're looking for that consistency. He's shown that here most recently. So he's got the upper hand right now. I don't know if it's because Will maybe took a little bit longer to make a decision in December than some of the other top of the line quarterback who actually did or because maybe there was a thought he wasn't going to be the starter to state this year. But it seems like people
have viewed him kind of as a game manager type of quarterback. After eight months with him, where do you see his ceiling? What, what, what is Will's special trait to you? Where do you see him taking something? I see, you know, a bunch of traits there. I think the first trait is size. He can stand in the pocket and see he's strong. So I mean, that's the first thing you notice about him. Again, whether he's standing in the pocket with boys, I think that's another trait that he has. That's excellent. He, he feels the rush, but he stands right in there. I think the next trait is just, you know, his top end speed. And he can run 22 miles an hour at that size, which there's not a lot of guys who can do that. So I think that's the extraordinary trait. And that would, I would say his overall leadership command in the huddle is is another, you know, something that he's, he's really, you know, grown into in the last few months when he's been here. And then his accuracy, he's been very accurate since he's been here. And when he knows what's going on and he can't, to spell what's
happening, I mean, it looks right. Just feel it. And he can hurt you, you know, a bunch of different ways. So, you know, his ceiling, you know, that that's, that's going to be kind of, you know, up to how he plays his season, but, you know, I see a player who has a lot of great skills that, you know, translates well to the next level. So we'll see. But I know his first focus is on winning games around here. Coach, thank you. Coach, you have take care of the goal line and down to the jacks. plays mean you have nerves naturally. So that's the first complaint I was good. I was rolling. Also, it was also Yeah. You, yeah, it's, but like, I prepared well and camp and practice all week. And I was, I was ready. Yeah. I have two multi-year starters.
It did a lot. I mean, I couldn't ask them, hey, what we got here, but I was prepared well. I mean, I was telling Jimmy and said, it's like, hey, we're like blocks. I'll be emotional. What is it? It's a guy from Ohio. What is it mean? They started me. It was always my dream to come here and play and start and having that like me. I just got to keep going, keep building those days and those games and keep building. What a much younger Austin. No, not I don't think even I told my life. As kind of younger self, even committed. I wouldn't believe that now I have a couple of starts. Awesome. Has this happened faster than you? I guess you're technically a sophomore. No, I knew that year two, I was going to see you some playing time. Now starting week one, year two, I didn't see that, but like, I was ready in spring ball.
I knew I was going to play some soft games. What does it mean to you to not only get the opportunities to play, but to play well enough now, because coaching staff trust you, they've been out there, whatever the situation is, but they earn that so early on in the year two. I guess it shows like my preparation, my hard work, and just everything I put into this, and I just finally show it up on a field. There are moments, the top season, the end of the spring, and the end of the season. I don't realize that you could play at this high level, with the ones, but definitely was in training camp. I mean, blocking highly-conciting every day. It feels a lot of confidence in doing it well, and not getting balled or anything. Hero in Jason Moore in Taiwan, all those guys, pretty much anyone on the deepened line, gets your face out of time. And Kay and Mack as well.
I was more collected how about this ability, and the great thing in the line. How much can he help you in your experience? He helped me a lot, and I'm proud that he's our starting center, not someone else's, but I mean, he's like the captain of the line. He's another voice on the line, with guys like Josh Fryer, Josh Simmons, Donnie, and Tegra. That means another voice and another captain on the line. He's a good way to having that, and I'm with this much experience. He helped me a lot. He can tell you, I before the play was going on, how to block someone, like what you need to do, and it helps a lot. Tegra is talking about how calm he is, how much does that benefit you? You have a guy who's kind of been there in some of my life. It makes us more calm, especially me and Tegra, as our first star, so we were up here with Seth. He brought us down, and we were fine.
Our emotions weren't high, we settled in. Is that something he tells you? Is that something you can pick up on by how he's acting? How do you kind of mean sense what he's trying to do? By how he's acting, and what I mean, him, when we're on the side of him, both Josh and Donnie, he was telling us, we're cool, we got him, but it's pretty much like everyone. Oh cool group. I said, how much do you do that? As a first time starter, how much did you add in that? Me a lot. That was my first time ever using iPads. We didn't use the iPads in high school, but you can say, try to remember the defense. You can just come on a silent and bring up a play and get help. Probably the first or second move back. After that, I thought we'd say all right and settle it. Awesome, thank you very much. Thanks, Bob. Well, you're welcome. Best move can you be a part of you, settle again to go? That's um, I want to say, maybe I don't know, but I mean,
when I'm pretty sure you got the job, I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo, I can run with the tempo, you know what I mean? I've been playing basketball all my life in the center football, and I feel like just the fast pace often, so we're running, it really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw a football at 65 yards, but can you kick a football? 75 yards a quick of a second. Probably a question. Lincoln, what was your question? How is your, uh, your roommate at the community? He's a blessing, man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. What's his name? His name's Lincoln. Keen Holtz. Oh, he's a cleaner. I think we're both really clean. That's why we kind of pick each other's roommates because we're very clean and we don't like our rooms really messy. Well, it's true though. It's true, they're real pretty clean. Luke, are you still a cross-training attack or some, or have you just been all-dark this break? Uh, so far I've been all-darked. I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking it practice, I practice. I could end up being back attack like good and on, but
no, I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next thing. Yeah. Oh, that mean a lot. You know, you put a lot of work in to play here. And it's been a dream just for being an Ohio kid. It's from a Ohio kid's perspective. I mean, that's the biggest wish possible out of it. I would say that's going to be pretty cool. What was it like just last year at first game getting on the field for the first time? It didn't fly. This is going to be a weird answer, but it I feel like I was playing a game, if that makes sense. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing. I just went in that first game. Shoot out here now. It's time to roll. You know, it didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't even hit me after. I'm like, what'd you feel doing? It's like getting out there at any end. I just like honestly, I don't know. I felt less than there is that in high school. And it makes no sense. A lot. I mean, I'm learning from Josh Aniston.
I think, prior to when my biggest role model series, my big brother, when I first made it. I'm up for the end. I don't want to stay up for the end. Okay. Yeah, no. Yeah. So, yeah, for the end of Austin, those are my guys, man. I mean, even Miles too. I mean, all three of them. That's those are my roommates and they're progressing every day as well on. And I'm excited to see where they can get to. I'm excited to play on the field with them. Oh, yeah, he's been really helpful. You know, just keep in my mind just settled and straightforward on the next play. That's a great question. Like I said, I mean, I just need to take consistent in my work. I think that's the biggest thing for me is just any consistent and worry about the next play. I think it's actually not those big ones. You guys started turning out. It's handplugs here, but did it feed off each other? Absolutely. I mean, when you see defensive, when you see defensive start arguing with each other and things like that, I mean, that makes it a lot easier. You know, I have those 10-11 play drops.
What was that like? This was a question of being a starting dealer. Like, you guys were doing an outstanding fall in the first game. I was good playing good football. But then they found it in the second match. I mean, it feels good to rip off these runs because I mean, we put them so much work on those. And practice them. You know, seeing the product of that hard work. Tech, reserve sense that is how it's aligned. Why does it y'all prepare this week with the top and back in there? They tell our hope for the first time in a really good season. You know, it's not pretty good in Austin. It's just more of Donald Jackson, pretty seasonal American, etc. I mean, enjoying the group, you know. Donald Jackson is a very good football player here. When he's on the field, he makes his presence tough. I mean, we've all been training on my home. There's no margin. Just going to move and you know, it's him we know it can be. Yeah, there's sheet to be. There was a sense of watching you guys last week. You know, even more of a force, it felt like watching you guys. It made me maybe even a little bit feel like that.
Yeah, I mean, we put in a work during practice. We practice really hard. Coach, they really challenge us to practice hard. Positions, coaches really challenge us to practice hard. I was just a result of it. But when it's rolling like that, what does it feel like being in the mix with that? Being on the mix. It's us. It's. When you work hard for something and you're able to see like, what comes out of it, like that's, there's no better feeling in there. No, I mean, I was really funny to see. Tiger, what has Seth been off on? We brought some guys for the first of the games. What's it been like playing XM for the last two? He's, you know, he's really calm and stormy. You never see real panic and having a guy like that messy
when you know, you're having really played as many meetings with snaps. I mean, there's no one outside of the other apps in my left and some in my right. You know, for our handset. Those guys, they do so much for this offensive line of peace. People talk about his intelligence really kind of show it up in the film room and on the field. Where have you noticed that intelligence and how has that helped you? Oh, yeah, like I said, and crunched him, you know, when things aren't exactly looking like how we practice it, you know, having a guy like that, like, well, we'll do this, this, this, and then we execute having a guy like that, like, there's none better than that. You know, what you got? I'm very from this one. I'm, what's my favorite cake? No, brother.
Uh-huh. Uh-huh, and now, that, I almost came back with a couple of sunnages and more. Tell you we're looking at Marshall. They got a couple guys with a deep inside of it that have big tin bodies. Absolutely. What do you see when you look at their tape and see 15, 7, a couple of those guys have pretty deep inside of their. Yeah, and those guys here, they're real players. They're real players. You can sell their coach well. You can sell, they go hard, you know, they're real players over there. We've been practicing to the best of our abilities, you know, and expect that. And I'm prepared for that. I mean, we see they made their G-Tech last year. Another day? They take the... Yeah, they play a good ball over there. And, you know, their defense plays hard. They challenge teams, you know, sometimes they might be overlooked and they still challenge teams, you know. You can sell, they come out there with the mentality,
like, no matter who's in front of us or when the blowout. I mean, the actions right there right in front of you right now, which is kind of a good thing and kind of a bad thing. You should shut off the rest, you know, hidden back in it. Inside... You talked to your searchers and you know, that's not something you need to say. Yeah, I mean, I hear from Paris every once in a while, trying to not sit by there. I'm too much about... It's always good to hear from Gellite, guys like D'Wan, even Matt Jones, return him back. And for this year, just be able to confront that job. We want to go skill some. I think it's a lot of... My weight, my height is more regard height. When I'm faster, my feet and I'm just thinking that you need to kind of...
Sometimes, sometimes, like basketball, I want to be on that just like defend, but you know, you got to stay in the stage where you're somewhere. Exactly. Yeah, that's a great question. I mean, I feel like these two can answer that for the year right now. I think KKN Hero can answer that. Well, I don't know what to say about that. What do you guys think? I don't know. I don't know. I go to the age of a day, you know. This man is strong. Ready? I'm talking about like, you have the basketball fear. You know, you can't just do a thing. He's like, man, he's really fast. Just the whole world, I'm sure he's the high. And he got the grip right in the back. He doesn't give up on the play. Like you said, he's going to go in and watch the film. He's doing everything better. He's going to see the 100 feet on that one. From the practice one, to now practice, now he can see the proof in that again. Here, if he was following us around, we'll all be in the same place. He sounded like a coach, man. He sounded like a coach.
I was just going to check Kelly's influence. Change your mind about maybe like the idea of tackle versus driving because obviously his offensive predilectionals were like, yeah, the offensive line play, when they... Has he been a part of you settling in the guard? That's um, I want to say maybe, I don't know, but I mean, when I'm pretty sure you got the job, I was really excited because I'm one of those guys who's the tempo. I can run with the tempo, you know what I mean? I'm playing basketball all life in the set of football and I feel like just the fast pace often so we're running. It really fits the guys we have right now. I'm really excited for that. I know you can throw for ball, 65 yards, but can you kick a football? 75 yards and think of it. Probably question. Lincoln, what's your question? How is your, uh, your roommate at the pub? He's a blessing, man. I can't complain. He's a great guy. What's his name? His name's Lincoln. Keen Holtz. Ooh, who's cleaner? I think we're both really clean.
That's why we kind of pick each other's roommates because we're very clean and we don't like our rooms really messy. Well it's true though. It's the truth. They're both pretty clean so. Luke, are you still cross-training at Tag Bullsom or have you just been all guard this time? Uh, so far I've been all guard. Um, I really don't know. Like I said, I'm taking it practice, I practice. I could end up being back at Tag Bull, I could not, but I'm just really focused in on this past practice and the next one. Yeah. Oh, that mean a lot. Um, you know, you put a lot of work in to play here. And I spend a dream just from being in Ohio kid, and I'm from a Ohio kid's perspective. It's, I mean, that's the biggest switch possible. I would just, I would say, that's, that'd be pretty cool. What was it like to class your first game getting on the field for the first time? It didn't fly. This is gonna be a weird answer, but it didn't feel like I was playing a game yet, if that makes sense. I did. I was pretty locked in. I felt like just no anxiousness, no stress, no nothing, really. I just went in that first game, was like, shoot out in here now.
It's time to roll, you know? It didn't really hit me. I was like, it didn't even hit me after, but my mom was like, what'd you feel there? And it's like getting out there in the end. I was like, honestly, I don't know. I felt less nervous that I didn't high school, and that makes no sense. A lot. I mean, I'm learning from Josh and Austin. I think Friars is one of my biggest role models here. He's my bigger brother in my first game. So I'm up to Dia. Yeah, I'm up to Dia, okay. Yeah, no. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, to Dia and Austin, those are my guys, man. I mean, even Miles too, I mean, all three of them. Those are my roommates, and they're progressing every day as well. And I'm excited to see where they can get to. I'm excited to play on the field with them. Oh yeah, he's been really helpful, you know? Just keeping my mind just settled and straightforward on the next play. It's a great question. Um, like I said, I mean, I just need to stay consistent in my work, I think.
That's the biggest thing for me is just staying consistent and worrying about the next play. To my game, and I was like, whoa, I never had that happen. No other school, like just Ohio State field can't win. And I was like, wow, that's crazy. Do you like, I mean, you're quiet, but also do you like that? Do you want everything that comes to you? I do, but at the same time, I don't just like to be a normal person. I don't really like that. What's going on in the field? Are you a showman? I mean, how does he describe this kind of like your art form? Yeah, I mean, yeah, I want to feel, I'm a little bit more chipy a little bit, but sometimes I still be quiet on the field. What's the competitive part of you? What did that, when did you know to set about yourself? Oh, I've been having that. I mean, since I was like eight, nine years old, you know, happens, I mean, just high-end house rate, just to be competitive. That's the reason why chose to come to Ohio State, just to compete each and every day, just to go against the best DB group in the country. I was told what to say is, it's been enhanced in the last several months. I mean, you want to get in the notes and then, then sell perks, etc.
Oh, yeah, for sure. Just going to get them to God, the best two DBs in the country. I mean, that's the reason I came here. This is going to get God just to make me better each and every day. That's the day. Yeah. I did. I said, I said, I said, well, he said, when he defed little boy, he said, I'm here. I said, okay, we'll be back. And that's some be back. Then when I'm in a bit of play, I just, I'll just walk off. That's it. When you talk to ball, yeah, I said, I told you, I'm coming back, right? You're about to, what's your like, you back to car now, say, you're going to miss your ass. You're asking to meet me. Okay. It feels great just us three to be on the field together. We got to make a lot of plays this year. I learned a lot, especially from Cardinal, because we both play outside. So me just learning from him and, you know, the things he learned, he just teaching me. And you know, he was behind Mar and stuff like that. So he just teaching me the game for sure. What specifically you got better at that in your team?
You heard the one you first got. I said my footwork. That's the biggest game. My coach at Lyon was looking at that's one thing I need to get better on. So I mean, I just worked on that in all seasons and just got better over time. What, what can still be a work ethic in here? What can still be my work at the end? I mean, just, I really don't know. I can't really answer that. But it just, it's just in me like, I just want to work. That's one thing. I think I say, I get it from my dad. My dad really the reason why I worked so hard, because since I was like eight years old, he just wanted me to just work and be the best at what I do. So I mean, I really, I said, get from my dad. Why do you see the clip of my day? You know, I'm tiny day. What show? I've got a lot more to it. Yeah, yeah, sitting. And how close did you come to the team? I wasn't, I wasn't. So if I had a, I don't know why. Can we make it to see my game with that? I was a black car and that's it. How did you get that set? Oh, he said a big example.
Me just, I ain't go sales only just my dad. It was me. I have a cousin's name. You know, it's really pretty fun to see how to see how. So I was, I looked at him as well. I mean, seeing what he was doing at West Virginia, with Teywan Austin and Steadin and Bayley. Something he was a motivation for me. And just old the guys that grew up before me in a minor garden area, a brow area for sure. I mean, just looking at those guys. Guys like, I say Brandon Enders for sure. He was a class ahead of me. So I seen things he was doing in eighth grade. And I was just like, whoa, I mean, that's something I want to do. We know about the expectations. I mean, I Chris Carter on my podcast team, who takes you to be? Who takes you to be a factor from the first place, first day, first game, etc. Those are big expectations. What do you mean, bracelets? Um, I, I really don't. I mean, I know it's big expectations for me because, you know, no one playing the country coming in and all the hype around me. So I mean, I just try to block out all that stuff and just focus on the main thing. Just the team and I receive a room and a locker room and know just first game come. If I don't, you know, see the expectations that you have for me.
I mean, I don't really care. I just want to go out there and win a game. That's good. How much of a confidence these girls have for you when people like Chris Carter, Marvin Harrison Jr. are saying, this guy can be the next favorite basketball match. Uh, I mean, it's, it's something great. I mean, I just got, I just got to go out there on the field and just show you guys that I could be the next, you know, part of the great, uh, great Ohio State receiver to come through here. So I mean, it's a blessing and know how that, and that's how I go out there and play and show you guys. What does it mean? All it means a lot for me to be, uh, was it the first freshman? Uh, yeah, I mean, just that's the best of me, uh, for sure. Just, you know, shows all the hard work that I put in of the main, uh, in the way, Mr. What's your majority come from? Uh, my dad really, I mean, the maturity, um, no, just be older than, no, act my age, act older than my age. I mean, a lot of people tell me that I don't act my age. I'm, I weigh, I'm weighed because I might, weigh beyond my years, um, it just, it just got to be mature and, you know,
act don't I like it here. What is the couple more questions for Jeremy? What is the cost for you? 70, 30, 30. What's your name's like? Uh, it just, no, when I see a 50-50 ball, I mean, just, I just think it's, I got to make the play. And it's on me, you know, matter how the ball is, or if it's a bad ball, I just feel like I got to make that play, no matter what the certain sense of this, you know, matter if it's a bad ball, I feel like the ball is mine, no matter who I'm turning me, or no, no matter. What's your name? Getting between the ball and the fender come from them. I mean, that talent sets you apart in my opinion a lot of ways. What do you always have that nice? Oh, yeah, I did. Always had that next. I was like, since I started to parents see you right like eight or nine years old, I just found the way to, you know, make sure that ball is mine when it's in the air. And I just, I always find a way, to find a way to make my quarterback look good. Oh, yeah, for sure. He definitely made a big jump from industry.
I like his confidence. He's starting to talk more, talk a lot of mess on the field. And I like that about my quarterback, I love quarterback, I like to talk and, you know, just get around his players and make him feel good about it. He talked on the field, you know, just, you just say a lot of stuff I can't say, but he goes talk for sure. Okay. Jeremiah, thank you very much. Thank you guys. Thank you. It was on me. My split was two, he wanted me to come my split now. So that was, that was on me. That wasn't a good one. That was it. There was also that play aside. It's clear that will be offense, correct it is. If you're single about one on one, brats man, they're willing to take that shot to you every time. Were you expecting to have this bigger role in the offense this early? Not at all. Not at all. Just coming in, no, this is a high estate and just all the receivers that been here and I was here before I got here. So I did not have no expectation that was having the role
that I had right now. So I mean, I just get all the things they got and then just be able to be in this position. Is that so real to you then? To be putting up kind of numbers you already have? Oh, yeah, it's for sure. I mean, but no job. Not finished. I said, it's me finished him. What was the same on the trust? I mean, he tells me a lot each and every day that if you're single, single covers one on one, going to you don't matter who or you don't matter. Just throwing it up. You just go me, I just got to make a play as a do you realize if you press the you know, was there a moment of spring or just in the trend camp or? I say, I say fall camp. That's really when he would just trust him. He just throwing it up. And I'm just going to go get it. You're on the play Saturday with the thing you said you're supposed to do. Yeah, to why yeah. I should have cut my spit. Now I think I was, you know, out like bottom of the numbers. I should have been like numbers plus numbers plus two, I believe. Yeah, something like that. So that's the reason why he just played over top.
Yeah, that's an essential. We think our numbers have made a history as a partial. I don't know how it's made. This is the whole coach. We've got a program. You feel like a normal parchment? I mean, you're an exceptional freshman for the state of national. I mean, I love it. I still feel like I'm just a regular freshman, but you know, a lot of people say I'm not, but, I mean, just the role that I have just coming in is just, it's been a blessing. I just can't think, can't say it's on me, it's on God and just the coaches for trusting me to have a put a freshman out there and just to go out and make plays and just do what I do. You're hearing from your teammates and you've been involved in confidence in you, but you said you didn't expect to have playing time when you came in. So what did you actually expect? How much do you think you would have gotten? Not that much, because you know, you're about cardinal tape. You got mecha, Google I came back. You got Brandon, is that big of your, JD Ballet,
all of them guys. So really, my mentality just coming in just working, learning and just, you know, play special teams and make plays on special teams. A lot of moments I was worse. You're about to expect, you know, expect this will be different from the big team in the leg. You're on the cards now. Yeah. What do you expect to be different about big teams in the top half? I mean, just watching them, they played better team than the last three teams in play. So I mean, it's going to be a better team that I heard from the last couple years that we played, a higher state player, as we call it, they said. So I mean, it's going to be a good game, you got to go to a higher state as always. Better be as a good guy. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, man. Yeah. I'm on the roll. Oh, yeah, for sure. We hungry right now. I can see in everybody, I was everybody in office. All of us along. Quarterback will however, receiving one. We definitely hungry for sure. We're ready to go out there and has a dinner and just put on the show. Austin Moore, the podcast. Did you know I have to bet it, but what would it know you more? Being interfered with and not getting the call or not being able to catch you? I say be able not to make the catch anyway.
I feel like everybody is throwing me. I have to catch it no matter how if the defender on me or not. I just feel like I have to make it play no matter what. I mean, I played Saturday. I feel like I could have caught it, but you know, it was a pass in the friends, but it touched my hands. I should have caught it. Dan, hold on. Let me worry. Jeremiah, there's a lot of discourse from fans this week about you not winning the Sean Alps and the freshman year of or just what's your thoughts on that? I mean, me calling is a great player as well. I mean, I can't really not kill. No, Sean is a great guy. I talked to him two weeks ago. It's a great guy. I learned a lot of things from him outside of football as well. So I mean, I really can't focus on that. I'm just worried about beating Oregon and just going out there to pass it and just putting on the show. Anybody else have questions? Tom Moore, a fuck-eye huddle. You mentioned getting bragged by mission and he's that. frustrating when we see that from the father teams. Is that frustrating? Is that, you know, you and it feels like you always think you're open. Are you still open when you're bragged? Oh, yeah, for sure. I'm still open. No matter what, bragged or not.
I mean, they just came out with a good game plan to break it me and a mecca. And you know, I mean, just, you know, things didn't go as planned as we thought it would, but we just got to keep moving on. Just move forward. Let's see. Steven Hellway did 24-7 sport. Did you mind that the two touchdown plays that you had with Will Howard? How many times do you think you guys rep that to get, you know, those were perfect throws, perfect patterns. And you beat your guy off the line of scrimmage just how many times do you think and what does it take to perfect that? Oh, I think we read the least. I don't know how many times in practice over the weeks that we had off. I mean, just came down to, you know, they press me. We we taking a shot. That's what they told me. The weeks we was off. And he told me her before they get in the locker room. I just got to get you a shot. That's what he did. And I just made a play. The first game to get started. And just how tough was that challenge against their secondary? I know you have to get into the game, but you guys made plays all day long against them. Just what what's your thought about the challenge
those guys gave you? I say the challenge is going to be, you know, a good challenge. They have some great global guys there. Jabal Muhammad number seven, a Nikoari, a other corner in Manayan over there. They're great global guys. I mean, probably the best we go see all year for sure. We just got a good name, you know, Bio-Haiyo State. That's all. Tony Gurdman, fuck I have a name. Did you ever buy that? So why don't you not open? You know, probably when the whole team on me I should say, uh, I mean, I'm always open to me for sure. Me just, no, throw the ball in my area. I'm going to find a way to make a play as I always say. Step on Christ Nick, Cleveland.com. You talked earlier about, you know, some of the great athletes that you got challenged and you aspire to be like, I guess, where's that confidence kind of come from for you? How long have you had that confidence that, you know, you have the ability to be one of the greatest in this sport? Uh, I mean, a lot of people tell me that I'm going to be great at what I do, since I was about,
um, going into high school, a lot of people tell me that, um, me just, you know, football is all I know, and that's all I really want to do. Like, I live, breathe, sleep football. Like, that's all I really care about. I don't care about everything outside of football. Like, football is all I know, and I just want to play football rest my life. So, and for homework, lettering and roll. It seemed like you have a role where we tried to connect on some of those defaults throughout the year. You know, be able to finally do those in that moment and kind of carry that forward. What is that? Was it the same other way that you had to continue to progress just in chemistry? Um, I mean, just, you know, the weeks that we had all, we were just working on deep, deep shots, because they tell us, uh, immediately that we have, uh, we got to take shots down, feel, um, we just got to connect on them and, you know, will tell me before, before the games, like I said, um, you just got to throw the ball out, then just give me a chance, and I'm going to make a play for you. That's what, that's what he told me, and I just got to make a play for him. That's what I'm saying. Adam King, don't be a bad ass. We can all joke, we can all talk about the expectations and the start of this, become,
you know, you were just 13 games. How do you handle that? I mean, just a freshman, how do you take all these expectations? Know when you step on the field that you're always open and still go out there and play? Uh, mean, expectations. I mean, I can't know how you're staying for a reason. That's what I wanted. Um, when it be challenged, I wanted the expectation, expectations, I should say. Um, mean, Coach Hotline just helped me, uh, throughout the whole year, just preparing me for each game, each week, uh, a Mecca, Boca, a Cardinal Tey, Brendan Enders, really the whole receiver on, just helped me, uh, stuff I don't really know about, uh, it just helped me throughout the whole week. And, you know, I can't really say it's all on me because my talent is, but they really been a big part of the reason. I'm having the season that I'm having for sure. Uh, Andrew Gillette, what do you mean, that kind of, Jeremiah, over a thousand years, both those years, when you look back at your freshman year, what was the most that go part about adjusting to the college game? What was the part that you had, you know, the hardest part about trying to train this one? Uh, learning that playbook. Uh, uh,
I playbook a certain else, uh, just coming in, uh, spring ball, uh, Mecca's new plays in every week. I'm like, well, what is this? Like, this new plays every day in Coach Hotline, like, you, you're gonna be good. Uh, we got no summer fall camp. You're gonna be great. So I mean, just, you know, that's it. That's definitely was the hardest part to learn the playbook and, uh, a lot of other things has to say for sure. How long have you been trying to get that down? How long have you been taking these field covers? What was the playbook? Uh, uh, I'm pretty, I'm pretty sure I got it down a pat right now, but, uh, net season, I really want to learn everything. The H, Z, uh, yeah, I really want to learn everything in, uh, playbook for net sure for sure. That would be 24-7 sports. You mentioned, how many guys it might take because you do not feel a little bit. So when you are one-on-one, and Will's talking about when he sees you being one-on-one, what is going through your mind as you wind up and realize there's one guy covering you. Win. That's all I could say. I mean, as a, uh, Coach Hartlan, uh, we do something like,
in a hotel, uh, Friday night before the year, he asked me like a question like, you get one-on-one, something like that, he asked me, uh, what do you do? I say win. And everybody just started laughing. I don't know where I'd be like, is it true? Like you got one-on-one, uh, battle. So, Um, where's the right-field landed? Kings of the North. Jeremiah, did you move to your round? So I'm going to send a seat to the point where you get a couple matchups against linebackers. Yeah. What goes through your mind when you find yourself matched up against linebackers? Uh, I just started laughing in my head a little bit. Um, I'm going to be a question. Um, I mean, linebackers can't really cover, receivers like that. So I just know like, it's, I'm most likely going to be open. Um, but you know, they just try to move me around a lot because you know, people try to bracket me when I'm outside, just alone by myself. So that's why they just move me around a lot. Or less, they live in more in the land. Jeremiah, you mentioned the most difficult part of your freshman campaign. Has been learning the playbook? What has been the best part so far? My way is going to rub off on people eventually. Um, and I would also say that,
you know, you kind of have to understand who you're talking to. You know, people, certain stuff makes different people tick. So you kind of kind of know your guys. You know, if you got to get harder on somebody to, to make them go or if you got to kind of relate to them, and you know, pull them aside, I haven't talked so I think that all goes into leadership and you have to be able to, that has to be a skill that you have to be able to develop. What's been going on about Coach Day now? He's a true coach now. He's given political indue as well as step into that. What's been different about him? Um, I want to say, you know, too much has, has necessarily changed, but you can tell the average tremendous trust in Coach Kelly. I mean, what he's, what he's going to do in the, uh, kind of the schemes and everything that he's brought into our program. So, um, the fact that, you know, he has such confidence in him and his play calling ability makes us tremendously confident. So, um, Coach Day is, has always been coached in, he's going to continue to stay that way. Um, but I'm glad he's able to, you know, focus more on what he needs to focus on. Okay. I'm just Caleb Brown. I'm back to the background. Um, he's kind of a field general in a sense,
kind of a quarterback on that side. A lot of people may think just, you know, the Mike linebacker and we have Cody Simon, who does that as well. But, um, Caleb's kind of that for our secondary, how to make sure things are clicking on all cylinders. And he's just a very cerebral kid, very smart. And he's able to kind of take control of the defense. So, um, make, make the right calls, make the right checks. So, um, he's definitely annoying for the office to deal with, but it makes us better. Is that basically the impact you have anyway? I think it's pretty much wherever you are. It's up to we don't really know where you are. I would say, impacting entire offense. Um, it's not like, you know, we're not oblivious to the fact of the caliber of player. He is, but, um, you know, as, as an offense, you come out and you expect to execute on anybody who's lined up a question. So, thank you for your time. Yeah, I never really thought about it like that, but we definitely come a, come a long way. Um, since my freshman year, um, thankful to the Lord, they've come, you know, these years and come ahead and illustrate and allow me to, you know, develop into the person that I am now.
But so, you know, coming full circle, it is really surreal moments to be in my senior year playing against, you know, the people I got my first freshman. So it's really cool. I remember, I remember Kyle getting yelled at. He was a ball. He was not supposed to throw. And I also remember getting pushed out at like the one or two year line. So that's kind of a bittersweet memory, but, um, it was a great memory. I mean, I have to say, yes, if I don't think I should explore it, I don't think I should be playing football. Who's a, my, um, yeah, my, I came in. He kind of has all the intangibles ever received. You can tell he just loves the game the way he goes about his business. Um, he runs every route to perfection. He's a, he's a very cerebral kid. Um, and every time he gets on the field, he expects perfection. So, um, he's just got to continue to develop, continue to work. And I'm really excited to see what he's able to do for us. I'm like, I held that DC and Jeremiah's made roll over camp to be able to cook for this opportunity. So I'm done today.
Yeah, um, I think, you know, it's no secret that he has all the physical capabilities that you would want to receive a really any position. He could play any position on the football field with his athletic ability. But, um, so a lot of it for him was putting together the mental piece of the game, you know, not just understanding what he has on a specific play, but the whole concept, um, understanding defense and all that type of stuff. So, um, there's nothing really that can get you ready for that moment for your first nap in college because it is different than high school. But, um, you know, once you, once it gets acclimated, it gets you to have no, I know, I'm no doubt it's going to take off for us. We do too many things. And how do you see him face continuing to bring the team together? Yeah, I mean, it's been a, it's been a huge part of everything that we've done. Been a huge part of a lot of the reasons why the series came back and everything like that. So we have a team by the study that we continue to do and continue to grow. I'm kind of just pre-sistered with the other gospel, the other guys on the team. And, um, it's definitely permeated throughout the team throughout the years because, you know, looking back a couple of years ago, there wasn't that many people on the team heavily into their faith. And along came a couple of special people who really changed the time and the time of our program.
But, um, you know, the Bible says one man plans and the other man watches. But God ultimately brings the increase. So we're just trying our best to stay obedient to the Lord and He's done tremendous things. Who does choose special people you just mentioned? Um, I'll say kind of the, uh, the founders. I'll say of the team's faith. Um, we're definitely, um, master team for one, uh, Cameron Bab and Xavier Johnson. So, those guys. What do you view as your responsibility? Um, really what I view my responsibility as a captain is just as a, as a person in general, is to push, um, everybody closer to Christ. Um, and, you know, by doing that, I try to walk as close to Christ as I can myself. I'm kind of lead that example and be that life for people to look up to. Um, and I think all the basic principles that are found in the Bible in the United Kingdom, China, for sure Christ will naturally naturally make you a better leader, a better person, better football player in the sense. So, um, I just try my best to innovate in. We have a good job.
When people are glad it's not true today, but listen toärchen don't plan it, physical, exponential, Yeah, I mean, we have specific goals going into every single week. Some of our goals for this week is, you know, things can get sloppy in the week one. You see it all across the country. You know, false stars penalty is all these types of stuff. So we're really just trying to be clean. Go out there, play a fast, complete football game, clicking on and firing on all of the same. So by no means are under estimating any opponent we go out there on the field every Saturday, expecting to pull out whoever lines up across from us. So that's just our mentality. So we're going to hold true to them. Yeah, very, very un-series guy, very funny guy kind of lines the room when he walking, when he walks in.
And he's just, he's a true joy to be around. You can kind of throw will into any setting and he's going to get along with everybody there. So definitely up the team chemistry locker room. We love having him around. So we're super glad he's part of this team. And we're all on there. We're getting back there a little quicker than football. And we also expected them to play, oh, come out with an edge. We knew that they were in the team that played in the audience. Like you mentioned, there was some paths for that kind of shoes. A card and some things that maybe rushed a little on the plays. But when the ball did come out, you guys were efficient in the passing game. 13 or 16 or between eight years of the chances. What allowed is the passing of action. Stay that prolific as even the off at the bottom. We're going to be strong and strong. The ball just had to come out quicker and throw. But then we have to see every day. And the line up just had to be in that fitting hand and they're running faster and quicker. How much do you feel like that game to be a building block for you in terms of continuing to be a big and big party off at? I feel like each game a building block. A stack each game and stuff like that. So I just made big plays and games. So like that's a, I just thought I could come out and block it from the top.
I don't know how much of line been working so far this season. They've been doing pretty good. I mean that and stuff like that. New guys, new places and stuff like that. We're all trying to pick up from the injuries and stuff. And you guys are the one being with this one last level game. How can the flagers do their help in that particular factor? We do got a good end getting the box down. And the wide end of the guy getting in there probably gets the safety. Get linebackers or the end and stuff like that. Whatever they need us to do. On your touchdown catch, so this is like a distance ball a while to come down. They came. That's all. They're throwing into the wind. Yeah. Colonel, what's it like? Like I asked you a little bit, did you, did you figure the ball was going to be coming you sooner or later this year to call them a girl. Meaning, you know, they'll get free big time. I appreciate it. Maybe four or five. If you figure them out, it would find you insignificant, insignificant. Yeah, I knew it would all come my way. Each and every week. We have plays for each and all of us and stuff like that. It just really depends on what the defense gives us. Like, give us one thing, you know, it's not a ball goes away from me or goes coming to me and stuff like that.
So ultimately, it's not in my decision or ball goes. And yet you're blocking a state of point. So like you're blocking, is that important? Yeah, our blockers from the wide end has been a big emphasis this year and stuff like that. Because we like that pretty much all last year. So they may be a big emphasis, but block them this year from the wide end. And when you look at Vince made on video, what just stands out about there maybe that past with Vince. What you, what you're going to be personally up against. They are pretty good solid corners. They played man and a lot of things like that. So we got to win our 101s. I thought it was on the perimeter. I'm similar to today. I know you got to get in the game last year. I'm similar to, like, just show the corner back to what you made yourself last year. I'm pretty much the same. I'm a man covered all around. They got a little size on them. And stuff like that. They all probably pretty much the same side all around. Thank you guys. Thanks for coming. Hi guys. I'd say Ben at pressure. He's walked away. He kind of brings some good energy. Jason Middleton right there too.
He kind of oversees Max the Bronx a little bit. So that's pretty fun. And then catching we all have some pretty good opportunities for catching. Especially practice we're going to make some pretty good catches. Very competitive for a fish here. Yeah. Definitely competitive but in a good way. We're all there supportive. We all know our same conditions. We're all going to have to practice. We're working with each other and hoping to get better. We all know that we need each other. We'll see what's going to be on season. There we are. You know, he just dropped his foot off. Ben, he's going to be in the pressure for a month or two. I'm in there ever point where he pushed. I'm in there. I'm part of it. I need to be like, understand. I'm not really sure if you're not sure how some people are going to help you. Speaking with a town of Elbeau right there.
I have a question I think it's used on that. It's something that's taught in New York. So I mean, it was before Rutgers when I knew Rutgers was just a minute or so. I mean, I think it's a lot of work. I mean, that's where our unit is. We're talking about the first person. I would say we definitely have room. What he's starting in this room. That's where it was all started. Trying to get it hard. You know, the hundred percent of the room. I know I didn't know. I don't know if you guys have a room.
I mean, I want to really say it's drilling in the toughness. That's drilling and counting abilities right there. So, you know, if it's a lab, I wouldn't fall sorry. I would say our indie, I kind of drill some roughness. I think it's probably the toughest way to start. You know, full wraps. I mean, I mean, being 20 minutes from home is pretty nice. And my dad plays here. I mean, I think it's a big one too. So, just being able to go back home and spend time with family is good. How often do you go back? I would say probably once a week, but as soon as we're somewhere around there,
not that far. There's some good people. Yeah, get a family dinner. Yeah. Do you ever go back for any high school events? Yeah. For the schedule for next? I feel like when we have byweeds or this week, I can go back. When things ramp up for a school of 100 dollars fast, give your cover. Yeah, it does. Especially when the skin and the stomach are a little bit. You really have to go to the nursing school and get a good deal of maintenance. Now that we're under so much time, what excites you about getting on field and playing meaningful football? Being able to see the brothers succeed. You're just knowing that all the work that we put in and doing will go through. That's awesome. Are you a big guy that had on taking the environment where you just fall business once you step out of the honest field? I'd probably say it's in the whole business.
I kind of just kind of went out there and was really fun. There's moments when we had a big run at Notre Dame on the table now. That was awesome. There's moments like that when we just kind of have to look at it and run into that environment. When you were at Rutgers and getting a lot of things, what snacks? What kind of prepare for that for everything? Practice. Practice. Practice a hundred percent here. So that's when you say, you're doing anything. And then if you jump into the screen and you don't get enough work on it, at the game it needs to just work there about practices. What's the purpose of that? Well, you're talking about the D.D. You know what's the type of working and defense practice? How do they push you as to having a better experience? A little quicker than me.
So I'd break the game here. A little bit of my camera and just kind of break off of that. That, you know, their quickness kind of helps me get my sheet moving. I'm a cat with us. Let's make a face out of that by coming with a friend. I'm a product. I have the cat that I'm going to get. I'm a person who has a love and a good relationship with a guy that seems to be in real, but what if they might see their comfortable zone? I mean, you see a lot of those guys who are in front of you. I mean, the cable is in a studio and so we're on the great side of the system. So that's how that world's going to bring them on. We all know how that is. From the school to an annual ceremony. When you think about how many guys who have a new impact on play, how many people are there to add in, and the one of them are like, the heck is the first cell of the year? No. I think that's good. Well, I would be very happy to see you. I'm a lot of things on the big screen. Yeah, I think that's the rest. It's not a media. I'm not a media expert. How important is the relationship of them to be on this? Good.
Yeah, we're close. We talk a lot. I'll leave it to you. I'll wait for you. I'll wait for you. We'll talk about it. Okay. Thank you. Thanks a lot. Absolutely. Thank you. I'll wait for you. Thank you. Bye. Thank you. Thank you for having me. Absolutely. But I would say during mid-Spring, I would say I said, okay, I'm going to do better at this. I've had a really good summer. Really good fall camp. And I grew up on a dirty team. What's like that reaction? Yeah, I mean, again, I've been a year ago. And I'm way past it. I'm ready for this. What do you feel like your role can be? Whatever the name you could do. I'm a self-employed player. I can invite a lot of black men and black men. So, it's been really, really, really. For some technically, with all the guys. I like to know that it's been great. It's been great. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And again, I'd be back down the street. So, at some point I was going to watch a film. I don't know if that's me or if I'm going to watch a film. It takes me a second. Okay, like you don't. It's really great that you're just. Walking. Walking. Walking. Walking. Walking. Walking. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I'm like I said, there's a batch in the country. There's a station. And in the dough, you can stand. Or they're working on my technique. My hand plays my feet for a year. I think not, not, not, not to be able to play, I developed a career. Yeah. Yeah. It, it's been by the same time we were different. You know, we were tapped down 26 pound points, 26 pounder plays.
The year is more than that. We do do that one. It's that four times. So it's different footwork and different body than this one. I'm just, I continue to show, they don't want to do it. I don't see you feel like there's just an opportunity for all of you in the tight end room, you know, with K now. Yeah, we're at this cage, the chair, but, you know, we're, kind of, like, giving them. We're making sure that they're. It's your five months. It's a strength of, we're in a thousand footwork, you're going to spend a spring game. One clock. One is now, one of the four years. I mean, it just, it just shows how, what we have going on in the highest days. And we're fortunate enough to have a program having a game on national programs. I think it shows the power of. This week, until Cody said maybe that started last week before high. I love your thoughts on how you guys move back here. I think going back to this foundation of the team, we believe that we're built on toughness. It's one thing to say, but I believe that we show up weekend.
We got we showed toughness. But to your point last week, I believe, you know, there was position groups that were challenged. Not necessarily taking a personal, but just challenged to practice harder. Let's see how hard can we practice? And so I think ever since then, there has been another step that we've taken. But that's the whole goal. I mean, I hope in two or three weeks from now, there's even another step that we take forward for where we are now. That's just the evolution of getting better as a team. And I think one thing I've noticed with this football team is I think every. Every single week we play, we've continues to get better. But I mean, that's just life, right? I mean, the thing you continue to do, you have the hopes to continue to get better at it. But I think we're seeing that here with this football team as well. I think when we talked to you in camp, you said you were excited about how you guys are going to run the ball this year. And I'm just going to say, you've done that. At what point did it become clear to you that you guys are going to be able to kind of hang your hat on the ball the way you are now? I just think we're such a balanced offense. I think this kind of going against our team, especially in specifically against our offense.
I think there's just too many things you have to respect. You've got to respect the perimeter and you have to respect the run game. You have to respect the stretch and the inside zone, all the different things that we can do, putting the ball over the field in perimeter or even taking shots down the field. You have to respect so many things that just leaves gaps in the ability to catch the ball for six and seven and eight yards. So I guess to answer your question, the more dynamic we're ever to be on the perimeter, the more we're able to connect when we hit on shots, I think the better it's going to be able to open up the run game as well. But I think Coach Kelly and Coach Day they do an amazing job just putting us in the right position and we don't have to think about that kind of stuff. We just awful minds that is 4 to 6, 8 to V plus 2 to play as hard and as violent as we can. And we'll look at the scoreboard at the end of the game and see what we are. Is that balance the best you've had in here? How would you guys characterize the balance of the ball? Yeah, I just think I don't know, I don't want to sum up, I don't want to compare. But I think we're just a very balanced team. I don't, it's not much weakness.
Now when I say that, we still have the humility to know that we must continue to be better weekend and week out. But when I just look at our team as a whole, I don't just see like, let's go pick on this guy because this guy can't do X-1-Z or we can leave him. I think we have 11 guys on both side of the ball that are able to be dynamic and the physical and strong players. And I think we're just a complete team. But again, I say that with humility, we want to continue to weekend and week out be the best team. We know we have to show up because on any given week you can lose. So we show up every week with the intentions of the National Championship. What's going to help you grow as a leader and what's going to help you grow more comfortable? I guess it's being kind of a voice in my mind. I would just attribute that to my faith and my Lord's David Jesus Christ. I think before you can lead anybody else, you have to have a sense of foundation who you are, having a sense of self and idea of self.
And I think the more that I've been able to be strong in my faith, the more confidence it has given me into being leaders to other people, being able to be a leader to other people. But I think that's where it starts. How can you lead people if you're not really sure of where you are? And then also when it comes to practice, practicality of football, I think the more you have an understanding of an author and the more vex you are in the author, the more that you know, the more ability you can then hand-know into the next group of younger guys coming behind you. So that all helped the leadership. But I would attribute that to my faith and my strong foundation and knowing who I am. Maybe some of the better instrumentalist of years that you kind of were able to learn from as well. I know that they were pretty good leaders as well. You asked who were some? Others, there were so many. This name I fit for you. I've seen many, many leaders all the way going back to my freshman who was just in and pastful and Jonathan Cooper. Those guys to the next group of guys with Chris and all the different guys going up coming through here. I've seen many great leaders.
And I think there's something I would definitely say is something special with the leaders on this team. I would say there's not the leaders that we have on this team, but not just leaders due to seniority, due to it's just my turn. But I would look at the leaders that we have on this team and say they're sincerely leaders. Not just by leaders, but it's not as hemi-down. They're truly, we have great leaders on this team. The first question for Brandon was saying that he feels like Will is just built in the moment. Do you kind of feel that way too? Yeah, I feel like he never gets too high, he never gets too low. He's always locked in and focused. And that's the kind of, I don't know, temperament is the right word, but the right attitude, if you will, for like a better word. That's the right attitude that you want from a quarterback. No matter what spot we are in the game, we look to Will and who will be able to lead our huddle. And we have confidence in that. All right, gee, thank you. Really, man, these tough practices, you know, hard camping so far and tough practices. So really just coming in each and every day, man. It's just trying to get better.
So, how important is that? I think we're on, especially now in big time. Man, it's very important. The coaches, they stress that a lot. We've got to run the ball, stop the run, especially in these match-up games. You know, these big game. So we've definitely been working to try to do that. What's the most intense memory you have, the most lost one, you've got here? I ain't going to lie. It's so many. It's so many. Fuck out, no, fuck out, man. I got so many there. Fuck out. But yes, it's a lot, man. Okay, what was the first impression when you went down all you guys first met? I think when he first got here, he came in the room. And man, he gave us this speech. Jesus, like, I'm a dog. I'm a dog. That's right, I knew I was like, we in it, man. We in it. I love Coach Log, man. It's out of the deep, brings him. Thank God for bringing him here, man. He's been amazing.
In this room, on the same man, he's been a huge part of the same. I was talking to you about that. Have you ever had a coach quite intense as with Carlos? Oh, yeah, man. Coach Offer was that way. He coached me that way. And, you know, Coach Log does it as well. And so, yeah, man, both of those guys, man, I'm so thankful. You know, that God has allowed us to cross paths. You know, they both been really helpful in my life. Maybe on whether it's that stuff, I'm not going to solve the other thing, or we just kind of generally keep it in balance sometimes. I was born as a for running back to work on stuff with the kind of off hand, and you're not carrying this over. I mean, I feel like it's just a tool. You know, you can use, you know, sometimes that comes out. And so, one thing that Coach Log helped us work on, is just using different tools. And so, it definitely comes to show on Saturday, you know, sometimes. So, man, that's, yeah, it's really important to just try to work on those tools as a running back. What about contact now? I'll do the proof that over the post-procure thing.
It seems like that's going to scream for you really, really. Yeah. Shoot, really, man. Just like the part of this program is getting developed. And so, really just getting developed here, you know, on the coaches here. They've been doing a good job of helping me, you know, grow and become, you know, a better running back. And so, especially having Coach Log here, you know, he's been a huge part of, you know, the success. I'm praise God, you know, first and foremost, but, you know, with him bringing Coach Log here, and leading Coach Log here, man, he's been a huge part of that. With Coach Log, you know, we've talked so much, you guys have talked about it. You know, split carries, but now that you're actually in the season, you feel, you're in for a drive, and then Coach Log comes in, you go over that third drive where you feel that defenses are more worn down where you're not in first time going the way. You split back, it feels before, but you've always been in the future back. Now you're kind of split carries. Do you feel like, when you feel that defenses are a little more worn down than you are, do you get in there in, you know, first, light first quarter or early second quarter? Every now and, I mean, it really depends on the team.
You know, there are some teams that play hard, you know, four-four-quarters. And so, yeah, it really depends on the team, to be honest. Do you think split carries might kind of help you at all in any way? Yes. It has helped me in so many ways. And you know, it's a long season for real. And so, the biggest thing is just helping, you know, with the wear and tear. And I'm just building off each other moment of two. So, it's helped in so many ways. And you kind of live in any way in here, does it even help? When you get down up, like, you know, you're not maybe getting the volume, you just might sound harder, or if it doesn't, it helps at all. Coach, they actually talked about that, too, be honest. Does he express to the team, you know, if you get tired, you know? We got, we got, we got death on the same, you know, guys who can come in and make plays. So, he actually expressed that. We got your tests to come, but what's impressed you about the offense and why in the month of last season? Man, really the work they've been playing in, you know, their practice. I mean, I know y'all see it, you know, during on Saturdays, but man, really the work they're playing during practice. You know, it's hard, man. And those guys do a good job of, you know, just coming in each and every day and trying to get better.
So, you talk about your thinking, getting off from Sean. And he comes out with a step arm. You guys, you got speed off that mentality. I want to, one of another, one of another. Yeah, man. Like I said, man, there is definitely, we build momentum, you know, off each other. And I'll definitely build momentum off my Sean, man. When Sean is a great running back, I believe the best running back in the country, man. That boy, talented man. And, you know, I'm so thankful, man, to have him here, man. He's going to be a huge part of the scene. Thanks for having me. You guys together. I was got on the field and executed. I thought it was just amazing to see. So, as it's team, you know, I gave him the arms and the props. And we got to the end of my bro. That's the hell the block. But, is this good? You should. Did you hear him yell from the side, man? No. It was so loud, you could hear it on a TV microphone. No, actually, I did, man. I just seen the blitz click up. I was glad to hear that. It makes you want to go out there and get one. For sure. Yeah, for sure. How was your past bro and center? Oh, I thought. Definitely, you know, I didn't get a lot of blitzes as far as, I think on that, like, yeah, I didn't have any pressure on Saturday.
So, definitely want to share. Yeah, I just got coach Kelly yesterday. Is he here? Does he call things differently when you're in the game? When he sees you're in the game or in when he sees Pravegan in the game? Yeah, I think that's the biggest thing, you know, like, I don't totally play it. I don't draw anything else because I just got there and just executed my name. Yeah, I know you're trained the same. You look at the guy you see. He's a little bit different from that guy. Yeah. Who? How do you like this package? How about we shot this office? You know, it's only the first game. So, I wish I could say. Yeah. I definitely how much I like it so far, but I think as we continue throughout the season, we get to showcase a lot of different, more other things. Yeah, that's why it's, how does it compare to like what's your game? The Ole Miss stuff, the variety of plays, et cetera. I think just starting off the season at the point that we're now like, we haven't really done too many, you know, crazy games. Yeah, I mean, it's a bit of a practice for you.
Yeah, you already made it. I mean, does it feel pretty deep to you? Oh, yeah, definitely. It's going to be fun and it's time to share. Which one does it feel like you guys are close in the run game, the bus you open? Yeah, I definitely think so. Like I said, we see on the fan, you know, how everybody has collectively come together and improve things that we're missed or love like that, but I think we definitely will. I'm sorry, I got that fake wall. What's that branded in it? No, what was your point of view of that? And we're watching back on film, what's that reaction to you and how much of an emphasis it is that? Yeah, definitely, definitely a big emphasis, especially at our position, super important, just to see what we do in practice together in the Eagle XB. What was the reaction to seeing the NF lock for that? I mean, at the moment, I just like, dang, it might be far. Sure. Coach Kelly was talking about you, Jamie on James Peoples, doesn't matter who's in the game, they call it the same way.
What did you see in his first performance and you see some similarities that all between you guys? I think in James, man, just saying, I'm going to go out there and be super excited with the performance. Like go out there for his first game and see him get the run and get the dirties out. And just see him get the experience of like his first game, me and Trayfol just enjoy it. Are you surprised at all the sea terrorizing happen versus ever game is done? I think just as a team and like we're so talented and everybody just works so hard since we've been here and you get to see what each of your teammates can do. So it's like when they go out on Saturdays, it feels so fast. Great, which one? Thank you very much. Thank you guys. Thanks for watching. Really just coming in each and every day, man, it's just trying to get better.
How important is Navajo and the run especially now in big time? Man is very important. The coaches, they stress that a lot. We've got to run the boss, not to run especially in these match-up games, these big-game games. We've definitely been working to try to do that. But what's the most intense memory you had the most lost one? I ain't going to lie. It's so many. It's so many. Paul Countdown, no, Paul Countdown, man. I got so many there. It's a lot, man. Okay, what was the first impression when you went shot and all you got first met? I think when he first got here, he came in the room. He gave us the speech. He was like, I'm a dog. I'm a dog. That's right, I knew I was like, we in it. I love Coach Lugman, mentality, friends here. Thank God for bringing him here.
He's been amazing in this room. He's been a huge part of this game. I thought you'd go around with that. Have you ever had a coach quite intense as with Carlos? Yeah, man. Coach Ophor was that way. He coached me that way. Coach Lug does it as well. Both of those guys, man, I'm so thankful that God has allowed us to cross paths. They both been really helpful in my life. Maybe on whether or not you're still far from up to something the other day, or do we just kind of generally keep you balanced sometimes? I was born as a herd running back to work on stuff with a kind of off hand, and you're not carrying it slow. I mean, I feel like it's just a tool. You know, you can use sometimes that comes out. And so one thing that Coach Lug helped us work on, which is using different tools. And so it definitely comes to show on Saturday. You know, sometimes. So, man, that's, yeah, it's really important to just try to work on those tools as a running back.
What about contact now? I don't even prove that over the course of your career. It seems like that's going to be something you're really going to see. Shoot really, man. Just like the part of this program is getting developed. And so really just getting developed here. You know, the coaches here, they've been doing a good job of helping me grow and become a better running back. And so, especially having Coach Lug here, he's been a huge part of the success. I praise God, first and foremost, but with him bringing Coach Lug here, and leading Coach Lug here, man, he's been a huge part of that. But with Coach Lug, we've talked so much. You guys have talked about it. You know, split carries. But now that you're actually in the season, you deal with your aim for a drive, and then Coach Lug comes in and you go over that nerve drive where you feel that defenses are more worn down, where you're not in first time building the place. You split back, it feels like you've always been in the future back. Now you're kind of split carries. Do you feel like, when you feel that defenses are a little more worn down than you are, when you get in there, you know, it's first, light first quarter or early second quarter?
Every now and I mean, it really depends on the team. You know, there are some teams that play hard, you know, full four quarters. And so, yeah, it really depends on the team to be honest. Do you think split carries, what kind of help you at all in the end? Yes, it has helped me in so many ways. And you know, it's a long season for real. And so, the biggest thing is just helping, you know, with the wear and tear. And I'm just building off each other moment of two. So, it's helped in so many ways. And you kind of live in any more inter to even help you get down up like you could just know you're not maybe getting the volume, you could like, it's not harder, because then I don't have any help at all. Coach, they actually talked about that to be honest. Does he express to the team, you know, if you get tired, you know? We got, we got, we got definitely on the same, you know, guys who can come in and make plays. So, he actually expressed that. You can't test his account, but what's impressed you about the offense and why in the month of last year? Man, really the work they've been playing in, you know, they're in practice. I mean, I know y'all see it, you know, during, on Saturdays, but man, really the work they've been in during practice, you know, it's hard, man.
And those guys do a good job of, you know, just coming in each and every day and trying to get better. So, you talk a lot, thank you. You've been getting off from Sean. And he comes out with a step arm. You come out with a step arm. You guys, you guys speed off that mentality. I want to, one of another, one of another. Yeah, man, like I said, man, there's definitely, we build momentum, you know, off each other. And I'll definitely build momentum off when Sean, man. When Sean is a great running back, I believe the shoot, the best running back in the country, man. That boy, talented man. And, you know, I'm so thankful, man, to have him here, man. He's going to be a huge part of the scene. Thanks, right? Thanks, right? Yeah. Yeah, man, he's been working really hard, man. Even before the season, he had a great spring, great summer, especially throughout fall count. He took a lot of reps and went against Shooter, the top players, taught defense in the country. So I think, I think he's ready to hit the field. As a bad team, when you recognize what team does happy with it, bring homestead in as you go, or then coming in, or against two players, those kind of things.
I'm not going to lie. Sometimes I'm too locked in, I don't really know to it. But we might be able to go down, and he'll still clear that as in came in. And so this is trying to motivate anybody, you know, he can do it, man. He's in as a great tackle. We have the team, right? I'm not too long for them. For me, on whatever things you can do, add the veteran, add the back, then to help those guys out front. I think the biggest thing, you know, is just continuing to carry each other. In those tough times, you know, when it gets hard, I think that's the biggest thing. I think there's a lot of time, the time to be hard, you know, you can get selfish, I think, at times. And so that's something that God has been helping me work on. And those tough times, you know, to not be selfish, you know, at all. And really encourage the God, you know, around me and spread his life. Is that when you've seen throughout the team here, it's actually going to happen? Yes, I definitely have seen that, man. We definitely have been listening each other up and encouraging each other.
You know, just really trying to put the page and focus on the grass. We'll talk yesterday about how this roster has been in the right place. You have an idol on a chance. How do you feel like you guys are turning the page of the game? I think really that was the biggest focus when we came in after that loss. I met as a team. It's just like Coach Day really did a good job with that. You know, just like, man, we all got to own up to the mistakes that we made. But you know, one thing I love and respect about Coach Day is that he took it upon himself. You know, he called himself out and was like, that's on him. And really it is on all of us, you know, as a team. So that's one thing I really love about Coach Day is that, you know, he was willing to check himself. What was the last week's practice like specifically coming off that game? It was tough now. It was a great week of development, you know, getting better and cleaning up the little details of the games. I think, you know, we continue to strive on the little things, the little details, you know, we can really go forward.
What's different about coming off the loss early on in this season here to coming up that first loss later in the year? I think the biggest thing is it humbles us. You know, it keeps us focused on the right thing. Like, I believe this is a test of our faith, you know, in the Lord. I think this, I believe, you know, he wanted it to go this way, you know, and test our faith. You know, we can see him trusting even when things are going to go our way. And, you know, he's helping us pass that test. You said Coach Day called himself out. What did he call himself out on? What kind of things do you say? Really just as a head coach, you know, this is his team. You know, he's like the guy. And so he was just like it really starts with me. And so we love that. I think a lot of times, you know, coaches were 10 pointed on everyone else for Coach Day. Man, he just took the bottom stuff and like, that's how he's going to get it big. And, you know, he's definitely been pushing us, man, and pointing us in the right direction, man, and helping us clean up things. Try to punch on a few leaders with ball in the ground.
So how many couples have experienced? What do you see from him kind of bouncing back from that? This, we have, this is the faculty of the procedure down as well. But where is the ad in terms of responding? Um, um, Coach Simon, and he's been responding to that virtually really well. Um, yeah, he's definitely not used to putting, putting the ball on the ground. So I mean, he's definitely been working hard in practice to get that, to get that fix. And then Coach Simon is a really great player. And he's definitely going to bounce back. It's even kind of guy you have to go over to write out for that happens. And give him some motivation to comfort. You kind of leave it well. Uh, yeah, I mean, we always go to the bench and we, we encourage each other, man, Coach Simon. You know, he encourages me. I encourage his parents. So man, it's like, man, we just sharpened each other and then and therefore each other. You know, when you meet him. You're on the 2014 title team getting on inside of there. Ten day anniversary. Do you remember watching the weekend? Those guys as a kid and how did they, uh, put your memories of them? Um, not going to lie. I did not watch it at the kids. I'm not going to lie.
Have you, have you gotten to know them now or just what's what's what's your sort of like, uh, you with that team? Uh, yeah, I, that team was loaded. That's what I heard about the team. Like it was, it was really loaded. I see highlights every now and then. I think we went off to like the champions. Whether you can't sell them, right? Yeah, yeah, like four. Right? Four tuts. For the four. Um, yeah, I, I think so, but I know that team was back. Now it's loaded. So a lot of great guys on the team. Thank you. Appreciate. Nothing. That's why you know, just coming in, you know, with the right mindset, trying to put it in the work each and every day and get better as um as a team. So what are some ways that you and Gen Shion trying to contrast the compliment one of the things that you may not be able to do as well as him and vice versa? Uh, shoot. I don't know. We'll see. Where is James step number before some.
Man James has been so good man. He's, man, he's a, he's a really good person and good player. And he comes in every day, you know, just trying to get better. You know, he kind of reminds me a lot about myself and so this is home and everything is coming in. He's going to be a great player there man. He's continuing to buy you know, it's a little bit here and you know where we're trying to go and you know, he's going to be a decent part of this offense. And you said good person to what's going out about this very home. Uh, man, he just brings someone to it man. He's a funny dude and, uh, man, yeah, I just, I just love him as a brother man. I got you, you know, just just just a chance. You know, I knew James when he was recruited and so we talked a little bit and just like being here, man, just being able to help him in the search family. Like the local is the group is being done and conversation that we have, you know, just off the field. And so just being able to be that one, you know, when he, when he was with, you know, just make this that. They trade with, um, with real dollars every situation is set of bills.
How does the impact affect the money? Running down. Yeah. How does it go down? How does it go down? How does it affect the game? Oh man, Caleb down. He's a good player man. I was so glad. You know, he's here man. He's, he's been really good for the defense man and, um, yeah man. He's, he's all around the field, you know, making plays in the ranked game, past game everywhere. He's showing them everywhere. What is it we with your response? As a captain, um, Jesus teaches greatness and serving. And so I just, you know, I think for me, you know, I just want to be, you know, the Lord's humble servant and just be able to serve others. You know, the players on my team, you know, how I reckon do so and be the captain that the Lord wants me to be. So, you know, it's a, um, big responsibility, you know, the biggest thing is just like, um, that I pray on it and that the Lord helps me to remember is that, you know, I'm trying to please him and not others. And so, you know, just keep my eyes on the Lord and continue to allow him to work on my heart to be a better team.
Captain for my team. I think that's, it's, it's going to be really good. That's how you would go for your God here. You'll see the captain. It's a team. Uh, she's not really, man, it's just, yeah, not really, man, I'm just so thankful, you know, that God has placed me in this position and my teammates, you know, they, they picked me to be in this position. And, um, yeah, I'm just so thankful, man, and just being in this position, like, I just want to be able to bring more to the Lord's name. So like I said, man, just leaning on him, you know, it's tough, man. It's tough, uh, being a captain because every day, you know, you got to come in and people are looking at you, um, do things right? And so, um, there's been days where I struggle and, um, just gotten to see the place with the Lord and just asking the Lord to for help, you know, and he, he bought me through, man, and he's continuing to make me a better person, a better team. What if you were to point on you to step in his first center of Saturday and you're going to sit there and get me in?
Uh, I don't even think we talk much about that yet. Yeah, I don't know how much we talked about that. We still locked in there right now, man, it's just when that time comes, what would you tell them about the atmosphere going on on Saturday? Uh, it's a side of man. It's a side, especially first game, being back in the shoe, um, the walk and seeing a fans and everything. You know, it's, it's a huge environment. So yeah, I'm, man, I know he's going to be so excited. You guys are bringing over two in the country. You're loaded. People expect y'all to make a run all the way to the championship game. Who knows what happens in? How legit is that in your bandage form in your city? More your city? I'll trade you on about this team. Yeah, sure, man. Um, you know, it's a long season. And so I think the biggest thing is that we're trying to do as a team. You know, this year, it's not look too far ahead and just taking one game at a time. You know, I think that's the biggest thing right there, man. Let's, like, let's just focus on hacking and marshal in the next game, the next game.
And then eventually, like, we'll get there, man. We'll get there. But just every day, just trying to focus on one day at a time, putting in the work. And I'm preparing for the opponent. You know, we have each week. All right, right. Thank you. Thanks for having me. Appreciate y'all. Appreciate it, man. I'm so, you know, it's been great. And the more that I just throw to these receivers and just get, you know, get around these guys, you know, the more, or we're coming together and becoming a team. And it's, it's cool to see and we just got to keep, keep doing it and keep practicing as hard as we as men. So, I think I've done a pretty good job protecting football and being smart with my decisions. You know, I think that I want to continue to push the ball down the field when I have opportunities to and be accurate down the field and get some more arrow on my, on my deep balls. Those are just a couple things that I've, I've thought about personally, but, you know, I think, I think one of the bigger things is, you know, what are we doing as a team?
And, you know, obviously, you know, I'm thinking about myself and how I can be better. But, you know, the bigger thing is, how can we be better as a team? How can I facilitate that being a quarterback? You know, how can I encourage somebody, you know, before we go out there to remind them, hey, you know, if it's a running back, you know, make sure on 60 and whatever protection, you know, you got these guys. You know, doing things like that is something I want to continue to grow in for my team, you know, because that's at the end of the day, you know, all 11 guys have to do their job every single play. And, you know, being the quarterback, you kind of have to facilitate that a little bit and help those guys and make sure that, you know, we're being the best team we can be. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I felt fast. It was nice to get out and running a little bit. You know, I, I, we made a little, made a little QB call on that play and got out and ran and. It was fun, you know, obviously it's it's nice to compete with those guys and running, you know, trying out runs and some, some TVs that are really, really fast.
But yeah, it was a good play. No way, no, when you're in your, you talk like you want to do a public pass or not, big, priority, you feel like you're like, oh yeah, absolutely. That's a big part of my game and it's going to need to be a part of our game as an offense, you know, whether that's in the re-game and in the scramble game, whatever it may be. And, you know, I just want these guys on my team to know that, you know, I'm willing to run the ball and go get that extra yard when I need to, you know, because at the end of the day, that's what really, that's what it really comes down to. Are we going to run some quarterback, you know, run place, sure, but, you know, at the end of the game when it's third and five and everyone's, you know, everyone's covered down the field, am I going to be able to tuck the ball down and go, you know, go get 60 yards and run someone over that. That's that's one of the bigger things and I think, you know, I want those guys, you know, they're out there with me to know that, you know, I'm going to go get that extra yard. It's been part of the day, but some quarterbacks are able to run, but not willing to be. I mean, folks, yeah, as a visit you were P way, I mean, I've always, I've always definitely, you know, when I was a young kid, I was a pretty good runner when I got to high school, I was a tall, you know, skinny pocket passer kind of.
And I wasn't really known for my running ability. I ran it, you know, from time to time, but when I got to K state, I put on a little weight. And I started to get a little stronger in the, you know, in my leg areas and, you know, I actually my first start against TCU third play of the game, I ripped off like an 80 yard, QB draw, which I surprised myself a little bit. Like, you know, I had had some good runs in camp and people knew I was good athlete, but like, I was like, man, I just really just do that. And from then on, you know, it just kind of became a part of my game. And, you know, I just got more and more confident with it. And, you know, the more you do it, the better you get at it. You know, throughout my whole career there, I obviously I ran the ball, I get a mountain. I enjoy running the ball. I think, you know, people always ask me, is it more fun to run a touchdown or throw a touchdown? I like to run it. I think it's pretty cool to, you know, run in there and celebrate with the teammates, but, you know, yeah, it's definitely been a big part of my game. It's a good question. Everything is everything's heightened here, you know, I think, you know, the, you know, you feel, you feel the eyes a little bit and you feel, I think, I think that, you know, the one thing I would say is that I don't feel like I have to be a hero here.
And I feel like I have the guys around me to where I just need to facilitate and just get them to ball and make good decisions. And at the end of the day, I don't have to go out there and do anything super, super human, you know, I just have to be myself and trust the guys around me. And, you know, in going through camp and through spring ball, like, it was talking to you earlier, Adam, like going against his defense every single day is a, is a blessing, man.
