Next coming year. Just how different your super-hero and just the term, if you had a college student, you get a couple of, and that and all the same, but just how different you feel. Not different than just the neighborhood and the community and the distance. Yeah, I mean, I can figure you kind of realize that, you know, this is, you know, this is your life, you know, you got to, you know, come in here, go play single-highest day, playing with the best ever single-day, you know, you got the time in, you know, you got to make sacrifices, you know, to what you want to get out of it in the end. You know, long-of-life, you know, school and just, you know, live on your own, and you know, it's good for you to teach us a lot, and you know, as you get, it just makes you better overall. You graduate from here one year, two years, you have got like Riley and he's the interviewer, and you look up to, you know, guys, and you're going to pick that role now, but you have got to, you know, what kind of leaders and employees you have to offer to the agency, grow, or those guys on the other side. Yeah, I mean, just kind of, you know, just shown the way around this building, you know, just, you know, how we do it here at a high-stay, how we operate, you know, they've, you know,
I think all three young guys coming in have done a great job, you know, they've, you know, great work ethic, you know, I think, you know, for me, you know, the offseason, it was more like, you know, like, you know, for example, kind of thing, and, you know, and just bring a little bit of, you know, vocal leadership in there as well, but, you know, just kind of, you know, just kind of work with them, and, you know, kind of showing them how, you know, build a guy's, and how we do things in the room, is, you know, definitely carried on to that. And being a part of that championship round last year, I guess, what did you learn from that one thing went on? You guys went on, and, I guess, what do you learn about, like, what do you think? What do you think? I would just say, you know, staying together, you know, our biggest thing was each week was just trying to keep, keep that group together each week, and, you know, I think last year we had such a strong bond together, you know, with all the guys, I think that was really the motivation, you know, just staying together and, like, like, a band of brothers. James has popped down the pass, and I think I've been deciding in our battle, you know, kind of made that two-deep,
but James has popped the pass on the map, and you're playing well, you're making plays, and just, you know, practice. You're going to play playing well, you're going to be doing things really good, how much pressure you set that approach, you know, you're not going to long, just guys you're going to use your best way of playing well, and you're going to be doing a lot of things. Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, just starts with, you know, coming out to practice every day, you know, put your head down, just, you know, making sure you're going hard every single play, you know, you know, what you're doing, you know, so you can build that trust. But I think, you know, just having the guys around, and letting the likes on you, our Val Payton, you know, you know, you know, who's, you know, been in there, you know, playing in games, and everything like that, you know, to lean on and ask some questions and stuff. So, so you're ready. Where you set that approach? I'm like 227. It's still 225 right now, I think it will bubble up to like, 238. So, get a little more. Greatness, Rachel. We should. You saw that, do you feel a sense of urgency to be part of that 2D to provide depth,
or maybe more than that, this season, how do you go into your 2D? Uh, yeah, I mean, I think, all right now, I'm kind of focused on just getting better someday. I think it's kind of what it springs for, is, you know, individually, just, you know, continue to perfect your craft every single day, before that second, you know, scheme or whatever, but, uh, yeah, I mean, I think, uh, that's, you know, definitely, you know, something in my hand, you know, obviously, you know, can't really play. So, I think that's definitely, it's not one big thing. I think Coach Gohan's a really good asset to the team. He's really good coach, really good person, and then obviously we got Coach Dickey, Coach Johnson, Coach Felix, we're all good at this season. We're a lot more split up, because we got more coaches to do, more drills and stuff, so it's a lot. It's more efficient and stuff. Are you rapping strictly with R, or you're doing so, I don't know. Right, Garden Month, Eric. You got a little bit more upwards
of activity on the finish day, so you can turn off your coach. Uh, being, obviously, need to be versatile, because last year, people went down, we had to go down, get Jimmy go down, and like, you always, you got to be ready, 100% of the time, otherwise, you just got to be ready. You guys being there, you're not different from what you're doing right now. Well, seeing that throughout all the guys on the list. Uh, I would say, like, half-go-line is doing that. Okay. Can you come from Michigan? I feel like that's not too common, or a higher-state player to come from there. What does that experience like? I would say, it's not. I wouldn't say it's that crazy, because I grew up in Michigan State fan. But obviously, I committed to Northwestern, because I never got, I never got really, like, looked at by the Michigan State coaching staff. And then, obviously, they didn't have, like, a great, obviously, my mom's talker got fired. So, obviously, and then, I know,
I'll say, call me something like, you can't pass it up. So, obviously, not here. What is your goal for this season, start for this season? My goal is to get better every day, and just be what I need to be for this season to go when the game is. Where have you been primarily working this spring? About position. Right guard left guard. How have you changed physically? Last year, like, what, wait, are you up to your decide if you changed physically? Uh, I got here, because I came, I was in summer and roly. So, I came in at, like, 295, and now I, this is like, consistently group of team. Yeah, yeah. You play both guard spots, I think you're saying, right? That seems like everybody would talk at this, play multiple spawns, as you were saying. You need to be, you guys learn last year, you have to be personally going on. Yeah. Before about that, if you would. Obviously, because it's not good when you're all American center, going down last year. But obviously, Carson was a really good asset, so he started the year before, so he's really good.
It's not like we had a big drop off, so he was going to be ready, even the other spot. I think the coach probably, the guy you've got a little relationship with, if you're getting your gear on campus, but then someone coached the phone, come there, and they obviously, the coach John, coming in right now, you knew from Purdue a little bit at least. Well, always a like to hear that he's coming in, but like, oh, this is familiar, and that kind of already, you know? It's good seeing familiar faces, and yeah, obviously, I like both of them. So, it's, I mean, it's not really a drop off, it's right, so it's good. Especially a very new set of ones. I think they're in Jerry's gone. So, is he going to say any other questions? Did they tell you about the opportunity here in Asfari's, meaning a player of your sort at a position on the offensive line? Well, I mean, you know, they see me at the left tackling with, I'll be a good fit, you know, coming in. But I was, the coach knows all the stress, you know? They're also at other great, all kinds of linemen in the portal that have lost the great scope, because they're saying that, fill-wise, I mean, I'll be good fit when it comes to,
what you guys do, what, if you see does, and what is like the people here, you know? What's kind of the ultimate feeling now about FSU? I think it's all just a big experience with them. What's kind of the feeling about them? Yeah, it's, it's a, it's definitely good feeling. It's great. I'm glad that I was actually able to come down here, because I mean, Zoom calls, and phone calls are nice, but, you know, in person is a lot different. And this is, again, to know the staff here, and to know Coach Herb, and to know Coach Noel, like, who else have you checked out during this process? What are their schools? I've talked to some others, so I've talked to, a house here in Iowa, and Ann, really just, yeah, that's what I've been, I've tried to keep it short, try to keep it sweet, or really need to be 200 bucks of schools. I mean, that's not the main priority, like, is, are you entering decision mode now, or do you intend to take some trips in early January? Yeah, I'm done with it, when do you want to decide? Sometimes I'm a full Christmas. But all.
For those of us who only seem to make me highlights of you, what are kind of your strengths and areas that you're looking to improve on? So, shrink wise, I would say, prior to this movement, I mean, I've been told by Coach Herb, I would very well for a 300, 45 pound guy, definitely, if I ever done on phone, this time, I've been able to get on my stances and make things for me so big, and I've been able to move people. But at the same time, also just being consistent and can't place any punch on a forward in general to technique. So, I mean, if you're, if you're a big strong guy, you can only do so much by, like, do not have the right technique. So, that's a big reason why I want to have a good, a good, a good work of discipline, to find that technique to be precise in everything, and that's kind of like what I'm looking for to improve in. I appreciate it, man. It's just something that's inside of me. I was going to be better than I was the previous day. There's a talk about the U.
When you look at the speed in the room, when you look at the speed in the room, when you look at the view, and also John Ross, I mean, what if you notice about that, especially, you know, if you went down the road there. Yeah, I mean, you could look out there on the field, man, and find around, try to make plays. And, you know, for me, I'm not going to put that speed on tape. No matter if you're the number one reading the play, or the last reading play, you're always going to put that speed on tape, and obviously, the quarterback's to see that, the coaches to see that, and hopefully, my opportunities come from that. There's a talk around the NFL that they might want to ship the workouts to Lee Jr., which alive, thinking about injuries and prevention, and was that what, and some, I've talked about how all season's good thoughts on that? What do you believe in Saturday? Yeah, to be honest, I haven't really put much thought into it. I feel like now, like, I'm a year six and a week, I kind of got to,
not kind of, but I have a pretty good routine, you know, how I schedule my off season, in terms of dates, and, you know, report dates, and all that stuff like that. But, shoot, they're willing to push it back, like, I'm not going to be mad, because that kind of gives us more time, obviously, with our families, just working out, like, the first two weeks of OTA, it's kind of just working out, and training and stuff like that. Which, I mean, we're kind of doing already, you know what I mean? But then I see the side of it coming in when we do, because, we've got a lot of new faces, guys that you sign in for agency, and then, obviously, the draft. So, I mean, it's not a bad thing that we come in when we do, because guys get to, kind of, be around each other, and know each other, and create that bond early on. You mentioned in your injury history, for yourself, do you think that schedule should help in terms of the risk of streamlining after the season? I mean, yes and no. Speaking of personally, I feel like a lot of my injuries have been things out of my control. I feel like I've had a lot of freak injuries. And, you know, can prevent, I don't know. But, I mean, more time off, more recovery.
I mean, if you're doing it the right way, then it definitely is beneficial. Check around back in 19, the Eagles were very interesting. What do you remember from that period, that process? Yeah, it's actually funny, because I took a top 30 visit here. And, I remember my visit, vividly, coming in, like, just really loving the place. Loving the staff, loving the people, especially, like, just having conversations with how we, and just kind of just being in the building. Like, it felt right to me. And, I remember, like, going home after my top 30 visits, talking to my girlfriend, wife at now, but, and my mom, like, I really liked the Eagles. I think that's why I think that I'm going into the draft. Like, I thought that I might be here. And, I know that there's been talks that, you know, it almost happened or whatever. But, I mean, in hindsight, things like, things always work out how they're supposed to be, you know, now I'm here. So, I don't know if that, it was meant to be like that. Obviously, it was, but, you know, now I'm here. So, you're on this being installed here. You feel that levels of playing field for you with your competition at all?
So, I think, obviously, with Kelly Meier here, you know, for me, like, football is football. And, obviously, like I said, like, being with the familiar face, and Nick. So, working with him and kind of like, knowing what he's done in the past. And, obviously, Kelly, being a different dynamic, the good thing is, like, a lot of that stuff is similar, just different terms and different names. So, for me, it's been very easy to kind of just be in here and get an offensive understanding. So, yeah, I think that's a credit. So, another reason why I came here is just knowing Nick has some type of hand in the offense with Kelly. So, it definitely helps me. Did that get a break from the jail and hurts so far? What did you say at the game? It's impressions of jail and hurts so far. Yeah. So, I remember when I first, like, agreed to terms to come here. The first person I got a text with was from Jalen. And, he was basically just saying, like, excited to, you know, have you here. He said he kind of watched me from afar just knowing that I was, you know, a speedy guy, a good player, whatever. But, you know, that meant a lot to me for him to reach out during that time.
And, since I've been here, man, he's been nose down, like, this works hard. He's a great leader. Just kind of his presence is aura. It just speaks volumes of the player he is, the leader he is, the person he is, he is, man. And, he's just grinding to get better each and every day. And, you know, when you're in the boot and want to go like that, you just want to play for them and want to get better with them. So, we got to say, for venture, some more. Do you notice that the way that they do things here is just different than the other questions you have said? Yes, I would say they are very, very, very detailed. Like, Fernando and his team, they're like super, super detailed. Like, even today, like, we got these little things where we kind of rate our soreness from the prior practice and things like that. And, talking with the, with Stefan and Chisholese, just about plans and all that stuff, like, they're very, very detailed. And, I've been, I've been in places where it's been like that. But, I think this is kind of a step up. Just how they're so intense with those things. And, I think it's definitely been efficient to the players, which is. You mentioned a couple of times as far as why you came here, even Kevin and Jason.
But, having H.A. debauching that room as a fellow receiver, how does that, it sort of is getting a lot of 101? Yeah, man, to be honest with you, like, looking at the room, looking at the situation, it's like, like, I'm blessed to be with two of the best servers in the game. And, from the outside looking in, like, the question is, oh, like, why would you go there? They already got these guys. And, I'm like, man, I want to, I want to be around greatness. Like, I want to be in there and be with these guys and work with these guys, and learn from these guys. Obviously, me and H.A. came in together, Devisee came in at your after. And so, like, I've known H.A. prior, because we trained together for the combine and all that stuff. But, like, to be in a room with those guys, like, it's only room for, to opportunity to learn more. Like, these are two of the best. And, if you're in a room with that, like, getting all the knowledge you can, like, playing, competing with those guys, like, it's only going to make you better. So, like, I'm blessed to be in this opportunity, blessed to be in our room. Sure. Thanks, guys. You have to go to the next meeting.
You talked about the personal diversity. What kind of personal diversity are you talking about? Off-field stuff. Yeah. Have you seen Fire Merby kind of progress and getting back on the field? And, like, what do you think about the field? I'm just thinking, I'm seeing his game continue to grow. He caught a little hiccup with the injury. He's off for a couple of weeks. And, I'm still seeing this progression. He's eager enough to learn. He knows where to be. And, he knows how to use his leverage, personally. He's a short guy. And, super strong. So, he has all the potential in the world to be great. What is about this field's offense makes them? Is dynamic as they are or the challenges they present to you guys this weekend? Starts with their 6-5, 250-pound quarterback. For real, that's the one that gets the horse going. I mean, without them, I'll throw it to the team they are and they know that. So, right now he hasn't thrown any interceptions. So, hopefully, Russian coverage can work together so he can cause his first turn over the season. I know that he's been a guy in the past that throws a lot of interceptions because he takes shots. And, yeah, I know he's eager to throw the ball as far as he can in front of our crowd.
So, you got to do a good job of plastering them. To, statistically, the run-definite was a lot better at the second half Sunday than the first half. Does anything really change there at all? All right, Russian. Just to piggyback off that, we got to continue to be better. Personally, for me, I don't like seeing the amount of yards on the board granted we did win. But, I don't want to be the hindsight guy and forget about the run game. Still, I think an issue for us has an issue for me. We got to be better. I don't want to be one of the last teams in the league in a run game. So, we're doing a good job. Are my sets right? The coaches are emphasizing it, and eventually he's going to get going. Obviously, you never want to have a teammate be treated away like your own, but with Ernst Jones coming in, he's highly touted. There's a pretty good run-definite linebacker. What does that do for your defensive room? Terrier, Terrier, my book guy. But, it does it. It does a... I can't really speak on it because I don't really know Jones that well. I don't know his game. I've heard from others that I know that place from the Rams.
I said he was good, but as far as that, I don't know. Hopefully this move works out for the betterment. Obviously, we all want that too, but we'll see how it goes. I feel like a positive thing, obviously, when Johnson and I are in your coach are working to get an impact player on your team when the NFC is kind of this wide open. It can be viewed as a positive or negative thing. It depends on what window you look through. What's that process like for you in terms of having to learn guys and their ten and season communicate with the new players that are coming in during the middle of the season? It's a big process. It's definitely not easy to rework your roster in the middle of the season. They're going to do what they're going to do regardless. Obviously, I respect that. I'm forward. I believe in their system and what they want to do. But, you know, it's an adjustment for all of us to learn a new guy and kind of reestablish a new relationship and reestablish a new voice that you're going to hear and make it a cause in the middle of the field, especially, you know, because he's the quarterback of defense. So, it's just something you got to get adjusted to, all of us. Playing in a different way this season, has that been any sort of an adjustment for you?
It has been. Just getting comfortable with my body again and figuring out, you know, my strengths and weaknesses and how to make sure all my weaknesses are just completely strengths. So, it's been a challenge in that aspect too. And I think I'm doing a good job at it so far. But in this past rush is going well. How much of it is guys playing on each other? Like, I'm thinking a boy is sack force from a two-you collapse of pocket and then he's able to get them. Yeah, you're all in a... I would say last game was probably the best game, surprisingly, of us all working together as good as we did. I think these past couple games prior before that game, it's been a lot of us just... We just went in and just happened to be like that. I feel like this Atlantic game was a good game of us communicating. The past game schemes, whether it's a game or just going straight where a straight rush and just reading off each other. And we had to get better at that. It's only been a couple games. Well, it's only been seven games. We have a lot more football to play to get better and build our relationship on that aspect. If you dropped in coverage as much as you thought you might have heard...
About on par. I've dropped a good amount of time so far this year. I'm talking about doing it now. So, should you put me on... Oh, whoever, now put me on George Kittle. No. Have you seen Derek Hall grow in the last season this year, being around him? I mean, he's the same type of player. Honestly, only thing that's been different is his mindset. And it's applying to the field. And he has to continue. You and the Oregon Fowl have a big game? I was. Jackson had a duck jersey on the week after. Did you have something that you had to do as well? I had to do something that was a little more personal. But I didn't make that bet. But speaking of that, I don't know why we didn't run the ball in the last extension of the game. So, talk to them boys down in Columbus and tell them to run the damn ball next time. And just, trust the kicker. But it's a lot better. Did you get the penalty, the intentional penalty late in the game? I don't know if that was on purpose. I think Mike brought that up to me and asked me, do you think it's on purpose or they did by accident?
I don't know. But... I think it was intentional. If it was intentional, it was a very serious move. I didn't, I wouldn't expect that. So, that was actually, you know, big brainplay by him. Did you think there should have been a second left? No. I'm be real. I don't want to be biased. No, we ran out of time. We just, my boy, my boy, 18 was back there just too comfortable. But it's all good. He's going to learn. First game with Roy Robertson Harris. What were your impressions of him? I mean, it's like 6-8. It was crazy. He's super, super strong. I've been watching him. I've been seeing this game from afar from a while. I shouldn't have been watching him above. I've seen I saw him in Chicago. I saw him in Jacksonville. You know, I just watched a lot of football and a lot of tapes. So, eventually you just see guys. You pay attention to who they are. So, you know, it's been a unique process of just bringing them in. And he's picked up a defense pretty well. Very powerful guy. Versus was well. And I think it's going to add a lot of good plays to our defense here. So, you've been very defensive lineman.
Have arms that long? Sure. Can nobody touch your chest? Are you in the ball game? You don't want big strong lineman grabbing you and trying to rough out you. Because they're already bigger than us in the first place, especially me. They like 6-8, 3-30. I don't know where my way is. So, playing with extensions is very key for D-London. Any other thing that could be a good play? His game? Yeah. I love Cogiro. You know what I'm saying? He's a great offensive mind. I truly believe that. But the main thing is the main thing. And it was prayer. The Lord led me here. So, maybe the Lord led me here to be with Giro. But the reason I am here is because I prayed only so hard. This is where I was led to. But Giro does. He can, I do believe in him. And I do believe that he will put me in a reposition at all times. What do you think about Gus' personality? Like, suits you or personality? Why don't you guys work together to work together?
I don't, that's a tough question. I really know his personality, like that will. Like, that's a tough one. Like, how? Oh no, I don't know how each other is personality with each other. Do you guys, like, what's he, do you guys hang out, like, feel like how well do you know him outside of football? I know I know him pretty well outside of football because, I mean, we're together in Baltimore for years. But, but, I, I, let's just put it this way. He's a good friend of mine, off the field. And he's a good friend of mine on the field. So that one's, that was a tough one. I like that one. I like that one. You're pretty outgoing. Is he the same or is he the same? What you think? What would you say about Gus? I would say it's difficult to be more outgoing. You think about going? Yeah, you come in, you smile. Is it a bad thing? No, not at all.
You, you, you, you guys, you guys kind of seem opposite. It's a good personality. Like, Gus seems very, like, you seem very bubbly and talkative. Or Gus seems very like, you know what I'm saying? So I think it's what we're trying to kind of get at. Like, what? Like, how does this, how does this work? Are you? Oh, yeah. Opposite a track. Look, look. Look. Look. Gus, Gus could be outgoing sometimes. He could be outgoing sometimes. But I mean, I mean, I just, I don't know. Maybe, God just gave me a gift of, you know, be a light, you know? Maybe, you know what I'm saying? Because even through like hard times, I'm still smiling though, you know? Because every, every day is a blessing, you know? And especially to do the job that I do, it's a blessing.
Especially after all the stuff that I've been through on the field. I got no reason but to smile, right? What do you think? Still here on the 53 man roster after the stuff that I've been through on the field. But I hope they feel the same way. Yeah, I hope it's not a bad thing. But look, let me tell you this though. When I'm losing, you will not see me smiling. There's only time, like one and only time you'll see that. My first impression was to see the offensive line blocking and seeing those holes open up and kind of imagining how you could fit in with that scheme. You know, man, those guys are beast. You know what I'm saying? Like I said earlier, the camp, like, I got a little bit experienced under me. So, like, it's always chemistry. Like, when you first get into camp, when you first put a line together and then you put the runner backs with it, it takes chemistry. Always does. It's never going to be like, sometimes it is.
You know, really it is. Like, you just, like, everybody's on the same track every time. You know? And the offense last year was nothing. I don't think it was anything like the offense we have this year, right? So, you got, these guys are trying to get their chemistry together and me with them. You know, I'm trying to get chemistry with them and we're seeing it, make sure we're seeing it the same way. And now, like, what you're talking about, I think everybody's seeing it the same way. We have a chemistry, which is a beautiful thing in a C, because it's going to keep getting better and better and better. And that's what you're going to be like. You're going to be like, dang. This is different, you know? So, I think that's what it is. And I love seeing it. I love seeing it because all those guys are my guys. Even the years you were healthy, did you ever not play in a preseason before, like, this just gear enough going into a week one? Yes. What was it, my third and fourth year, my third and fourth year.
The one time I did play in a preseason, because my rookie year, I didn't play in a preseason. We had COVID. Right. So, the one year that I did play in a preseason, we all know what happened. Nightmare. Nightmare, man. That was a nightmare. But, maybe a better man, you know? So, I appreciate that moment, too. I can look back on it now, and be in smile about it, because I made it through that storm. You know, you always got to make it through the storm. I ran into the storm, like, I think it was, I want to say, it's bulls compared to cows. Like, cows run away from the storm. Bulls run to the storm to get through it faster. You know what I'm saying? Have you ever heard of this story? So, yeah, my name is El Toro. You know what I'm saying? So, if it's me, like, they made it in Baltimore, and I'm running to the storm. Let's get this over with, because I know I'm going to get through it. You know what I'm saying? So, I mean, whenever, because I didn't know that, I really didn't know that one set of cows, I guess you could say,
they run away from the storm and the bull runs to it. I didn't know that. That's pretty cool to know. And then my name, so it happened to be from Baltimore, El Toro. So, I don't know man, some things I know, be stacking up. Oh, this guy named David Andre. He's a reporter, I think. Yeah, he's a reporter. He gave me that name, because I started speaking Spanish. So good. You know? Yeah. But yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You just speak Spanish? No, man. What? I'm not talking to that dude. Look, look, look, look, I'm open look. Me and this nice looking young lady right here, we were talking about how we, like, just learning, I love to, you know, be, learn people's cultures, you know, learn about people. Like you, I would love to learn about you. What makes you you, right?
Oh, you guys. We could, I bet you we can get it out in 15 seconds. Where are you from? Where are you from? Here. You from here? Mostly. Mostly, what's that mean? I was born in Milwaukee. Was there a birthday here? We filled out here. Take the boy out of Philly, but you can't take the Philly out of the boys. Okay, so you look, look, look, I already learned, I already know. You, you a tough guy. You, you, you, you a tough guy, but you got a soft spot in you because you've been living out here. Could be tough guy out here too. You've been on the 405, like, five weeks, right? Yeah, but you got it. You got it, man. You got it. Coach, hard to coach Jordan, getting better. All the older guys, helping me out. So I feel like, you have to get better. We've heard Coach Jordan made a lot of money, obviously. Coach Hardly has been a bit different all this year. What kind of impact has he had for you and maybe some of the other guys who just stepped in. Coach Hardly in the room, Coach Jordan stepped up and he helped us out. Everything we did, he's a big help.
And I just like make sure we stand up and all that stuff. We were just talking about stepping into a big room. Slime, how much do you watch, I like that every day, trying to take things, whether it's preparation, stuffy those on the field, and just learning from a guy like that. Yeah, every time I watch, I'm going to watch him. So I have to take some of this game and add it to my and Bryson Larger's too. I take some of this, all the receivers. Yeah, they always help me out. And I need to go. There's lots of life walking into this room specifically at the higher stage with all the history. I mean, you already smile. You know what it means to be a part of this room. What about that? It's a big step. It definitely holds a lot like a soldier. You gotta take quick. It's definitely a big dream for my team. It's never been a good job. I'm blessed to be here. You won that. Yeah, that's why you come. That's why you come. Yeah. What's that that I've come and advised you to ask
from some of the workers that is already even before spring while starting to talk to the Mecca, some of those guys are too hot. I try not to take everything personally. I'll say like, you know, it's your time to come. You know, we are making comments and making that play. And I'll be looking forward to it every day. And I'm standing up late, but because I still don't get you to find our life and find our next game. I liked it. Yeah, it was. As you got pregnant, you was a guy right away last two years to make a difference out of two years. How much is patient to require me to? Obviously, you'd love to get off the field. But how much is patient to afford to buy out? Not everybody has the same amount. So some people always have a living term. You just have a, you know, me and me. Like I say, a few days of time, you just have to make that play. And it's gonna go on for you. Awesome. Thank you. Do you like that? I heard, yeah. I mean, you know,
this is sometimes I just try to keep going and not take it to my head a little bit. I don't know how those governments say they're good, I know we have to do much. Yeah. I can't know how to say for having a loveous place. I wanted that to be a point of my career that stayed in this place a while ago. I know you were having a lot of fun. I know you were having a lot of fun. I don't know. I feel like doing like, I don't know. You never heard that one, but, I'm using it. Yeah. I mean, I think I'm definitely the new agent of God for all of you know, it's more money instead of, you know, term royalty, I guess, but I love everything about our state. I love how they, you know,
that's one thing about our team, like we go right for them, no matter what people make, I want to be stable. And I feel so many good, like long lasting friendship with these guys, I've been a part of this team, so I didn't know what I was going to change. I changed my mind. We're three. Yeah. I mean, I always cheer you as if I was. I'm a parent like I was. You know, I was also interested in guys hitting me. I knew that my time would come, and I'd be ready to take what's happening to come. So I'm going to chop you up. I'm going to do that, and I'm still trying to flip it over to be able to. Worst and most important work is being prepared. You know, since the first part of the women's game, it's amazing. We're, we're in the, I don't know, I'm a black girl, I'm a black girl, and I'm a big of a friend. I mean, we're a good team, and our conscious comes from our preparation. You know, we practice hard, and we want to make sure we get everything.
I'm a little, last look, and a little detail we can. And I think Coach knows a really big job of that. And I think we need to continue to do that, because everything that happened last week doesn't really matter if you don't do it this week, so. And our goal is to do a better level day last week, and to a control game, and one to get what I think gets. He's going to sing the really good song and want to really get in here. And we're going to have to do that. Everyone's trying to be the rest guy and make up. What's your best like out there? And so, it's a partner's part. Yeah, I mean, I think that's the biggest thing that football's meant to be a fun sport. You know, when you're at the end of the year, you're going to make plays and have fun. You really be brothers with each other, so, you know, the only time you really make plays when you're at a home, you know, I've been trying, you know, making plays, so, you really have those hands in hand, and we're just out there trying to have fun. I think we're going to have fun. We got here, and we're going to be skiing and telling around and can change that. But did you see what you saw? Emma, some of you. Yeah, actually, Will said, if he gets to play at noon, he can complete 80% of his passes.
So, I think the controversy's over. So, you get a noon kickoff, he'll complete 80. So, I think we can all, I know a lot of people have problems with what we're doing, but if it means a quarterback can complete 80% of his passes, we'll take it. So. Then when you watched him, and for you, got to know him here, did you see a 74% pass or that he is there? No, I just watched, I like to will when I got, he was already here, so I wasn't recruiting him, but it was just, you know, I got everybody that was on offense. They put together a hit tape for everybody at every position, you know, I got a chance to kind of buzz that, and then, you know, a week later, we were on the field, so. But I think with everything, his knowledge of the game continues to expand and the more he understands and has a real good feel for what we're doing. You know, Will has a lot of input in terms of what we do, game plan wise, what do you like, what don't you like, you know, what do you feel comfortable with, and as we get to know Will better, and he gets to know us better, I think you're starting to see that kind of really mesh together, so. I'm sure he's surprised you.
No, because I've seen it in practice. You know, the other thing that Will can do, he does two things really well. Number one, he can see, because he's so big, he stands in the pocket really, really well, and he's tough, you know, and I think that's one such an underrated, quality for any quarterback, you know, the ability to stand in the pocket, well, people are literally trying to take your head off, you know, and not worry about the rush, but always keep your eyes focused down field, looking for receivers, trying to get open at certain times, or if it's an off schedule play, trying to keep off schedule plays alive, but I think that's part of Will's nature that I think is toughness, is the ability to see the whole field while he's in the pocket, are two big things in terms of his accuracy. All right, I'm very WBNM. Coach, this is kind of uncharted waters with the new playoffs system and everything from an offensive standpoint. How much of the offense is in? And are you holding things back because there's some pooch, I mean, how do you manage all that? Yeah, I don't think we hold anything back. I think our offense is always game plan specific in terms of who we're playing,
and how do we attack what they do? Each defense, each defense, your face is somewhat unique, you know, and so you can say, hey, this team's a little bit like this team, but not totally like that team. So I think it's not, hey, this is a really good play. Let's not run it because we're going to need it down the road. You have to win every game. And I don't think you can take that approach of let's save this for another game because you don't know how games are going to express themselves during the course of the game itself. So everything we do is just game plan specific, especially now that we've gotten into a conference play. Pretty much in. You guys. Yeah, I mean, we could add stuff that I think we may have done in the spring, but we haven't used yet, just because we haven't faced that defense yet. Thanks for the whole work. I'm glad to have you all. Chip, in 2022, your UCLA offensive line was a semi-finals for the Joe War award. Today, there's some offensive lines, maybe semi-finals for that. Do you see similarities for the way that that unit was played and the way that Justin had your guys played right now?
Do I make me think back? I think they're different. I don't really upset it before. I'm not into comparing one group to another group. I didn't know that that's pretty cool for those guys. That's a prestigious award. You know, those guys usually go unnoticed. You know, that's the nature of the position if you're an offensive lineman. They, you know, they're either close or too valuable hardware. They don't really get a lot of attention. They're not the guys that are out in the limelight let some of these other guys, but they work their tails off. You know, I think that's the, the gist of any team that's going to be a really good football team. It has to be strong on both lines. And the fact that they've been recognized for that, that's something that's pretty cool. But now we got to live up to that standard every day. So you guys don't know how I started those awards. It's just to see the way that those guys have responded since losing Josh. That's the play car and the leader and the job. And so how have you, that I waited that, what do you think of being in the way that's played without you? I've been really impressed. And I think really Donnie and Seth have really stepped up in that leadership part.
You know, and I think the two of those guys have really kind of led from the front to tough, hard-knosed physical players. Obviously Donnie being selfish and moving from left card to left tackle was a really big deal for us. And he continues to work at his craft every day because, you know, I think everybody just thinks all line. But you know, all five of those positions are really different. And it's not easy to go from one position to another position. And the fact that Donnie's done that has been great. And I think Seth really, because he calls all of our, you know, identifications and directs what our blocking schemes will be. You know, it was really kind of fell into that leadership role for us. And I think our guys are rallying behind those two. All right, Dave Holmes. WSYF. Ryan talked a little bit about his upbringing at Fenway Park in the store at baseball. And he's willing to get your thoughts on playing a game in Wrigley. Yeah, I think it's cool. You know, I've not seen, I've seen just highlights of a football game in there. And I've been to a game at Wrigley when I was out recruiting once. But the fact that you can play in settings like that is, it's pretty cool. And I think it makes it unique. You know, obviously, they're refurbishing their stadiums.
So, you know, they got to be on the, they got to either build the one that they did on campus or go to Wrigley. So the fact that we get to be the one team that plays in Wrigley, I think it would be pretty cool. And I think our players won't enjoy that. Awesome. One of the podcasts, I know every game plan every week is different. Contention on the opponent. But it's felt like the last couple of game plans have leaned a little bit more on Will's over Russian threat. What's motivating that decision? The defense is that the people deploy, you know, sometimes they always have an extra guy in the box. And if you run the quarterback, then that evens numbers back out. It's as simple as that. You know, some teams don't do that. And other teams do do that. So, you know, it's just sometimes when you get, especially when you get in a conference play, I think there's a lot of people in this league that know how to stop the run. So, you know, you got to be able to have a mobile quarterback and it helps the Will has that mobility. Bill Landis, teams of the North. Do you ever interrate off the play or change something up just for the sake of doing it to break a tendency or put something different on film, or is it always opponent specific?
No, it's always opponent specific, but you still self-scout yourself. And what are we doing out of this formation and what is our run pass ratio? And even within that, within, out of this formation all runs are this. You know, and then that's always the fine line. Well, we should do something different. Well, what we're doing is working. Why would we do something different? You know, so you kind of play that game and go back and forth with it. But we're constantly working on self-scout of ourselves and tendencies that we're trying to just understand. But some tendencies are good tendencies. You know, you could be, hey, you're 90% run out of this formation. You're also 90% success out of this formation. So, you know, do you not call that ever again because you think that they think that you think this. You know, you can get into that real dilemma of just, you know, it's still about executing and still about lighting up and playing. So, but we do spend a lot of time on that. That's part of what our weekly game plan meetings are about. Any more emphasis on that in a college football season that can now be 17-18 games where you want to make sure you're sprinkling in different things so that if you could game 17,
and a team has a pretty expansive book on you guys, and why is that they can't, you know, key in on something you've done all year, and you want to make sure you have those changes in there. Yeah, there has to be some of those. But again, I think you can drive yourself crazy. Well, we put this on tape and they think that we can do this because they know that we can do that. They can't do that. Then we do that. And I didn't make any sense what I just said. And that's what's going on in your head when you're starting to think about all that stuff too. So, it's that process. You know, I still think you have to part of being really good at it is what are we good at? And how do we continue to be good at it so that everybody in the stadium doesn't know, hey, they're running the ball over the right side on this play because that's what they always do. You know, I think you're still trying to mass some of those things, but you still have to play to your strengths. Can you give your team a round of applause? Yeah, what? You can't offer a question about what's running. I think you're in class, you've got a couple of weeks ago, you mentioned, you don't have to talk about it to be power all the time. But how have you seen Will's progression in understanding or reading what he does his want?
And to do it when it comes to handing off to Q or Dre, holding more, is that more when you guys only have multiple visits or more? No, no, it's a good question. We don't tell him we want you to do this or want you to do that. It's totally a lot of that stuff is if it's a read play, it's he has to read it out and how he sees it. It's just like we don't tell him where to throw. You know, it's the place called to the Curl or the flat, but it depends, there's a defender defend the Curl or defend the flat. Like you can't tell him before the play, throw the curl, because I know the guy's going to chase the flat, well then he sits in the curl and you throw a pick, and it's coach told me to go there. You know, we told you to read this player. So it's the same thing with some of the read plays that we run. And I think he does a really good job. You know, he was really well trained. I think Chris climate does a great job and Colin climate did a great job at K-State. And you know, so Will's got a really, really good understanding of our running game. You know, it was more of just learning the terminology here as opposed to what it was like there. But I think he does a really, really good job of that. And when we put something in new, it may be new to this unit,
but it's not new to Will. It's just, oh yeah, we run this. And then we'll go back and actually look at K-State, take with him and kind of pick his brain. How do you read it? And how was it presented to you? And what's the best way for us to present it so that we can execute? You're like often, from this aspect. So what do you see as the advantage from huddling more and just sort of playing the slower pace of play at offense versus past couple of years? You have to remember where more plays are permitted than you are. Now, pace is a little slower. Just what's the advantage of that? Yeah, I think you can communicate better. You know, so obviously the thing that's changed this season, and I think a lot of people have slowed down, is the ability for the quarterback to communicate with everybody before the play. You know, before it was just everything was driven by signals and everybody was looking to the sideline and then getting everybody on the same page. So there's some teams, and sometimes when that's to your advantage. You know, I think more people do it to us because they don't want to mow in our hands so that I think the game has,
we don't get as many possessions right now as we have in the past, just because I think both sides are doing it a little bit more. But I think the communication thing that you're allowed to talk to the quarterback up to 15 seconds on the play clock is one of the advantages of huddling. You're not going to be able to do that? Do you think more of it? Does it keep you going to make it to the other team? Yeah, it gives us an advantage again from being able to communicate so what will can talk to the offensive line about. You know what I mean? Like normally you'd send a play, but he couldn't give them like, hey, these guys are 85% twist and boundary corner on this play. So make sure that we're really high alert for that. You know, so there's there's a lot more that goes on. It's not a two way conversation because he can't talk back to you, but you know, we have a style of speaking in that situation so that we can communicate some different things before it was. You just called the play and broke now you can give them a lot more information. You know what I mean? There may be a player got injured the play before. Hey, there's a new left corner in the number 15. We talked about him. We saw him on film. This is what he's susceptible to.
Let's make sure we're attacking him when you know he's in instead of you waited until you get to the sideline between series and go, hey, there's a new corner and I didn't know he was in, but you can communicate that stuff now. Give me a round. Thanks, Jerry. Hold up on that a little bit or just on offensive plays. Do you ever have times in games where you have to say to yourself, I got to be disciplined here. I got to call some run plays. I know it sounds kind of stupid, but I mean to have the balance when you look at this lineup with Jeremiah and Emma and Carnell and you could throw them all 50 times a game and nobody would question that either. You're saying, does it take discipline to also stay with the run game? I think it takes discipline to know what the defense is trying to take away from you. So, you know, for you to try to continue to throw it if they're going to play high safety and light boxes, you know, you should be running it more than, you know, and when people are loading up the box, take away your run and saying, hey, we're not going to let you run the ball in the situation. And you are still trying to run the ball in the situation.
That's, that's where I think the discipline is. So sometimes it's not consecutive plays in a row or series. It's just kind of what are they like? Because you take, say you're playing Northwestern, you have nine game break down Northwestern. This is what they've done for their last nine games. What, as you go into the really first, second, third series of a game, is what we saw in the last nine games actually happening in this game. And if it is, then we're pretty solid in terms of our game plan. If not, then you may have to morph a little bit towards run or a little bit towards pass based upon how they decided they were going to come out this week. Because they may have come out in the previous nine weeks and done this, but in your game, they're doing it a little bit differently. So it's the ability to make those adjustments and kind of lean one way or the other. You know, I think it's the discipline part you're talking about. Not just saying, well, we're just going to chuck it. You know, but if, if they're playing really deep and you're still trying to throw it deep, then that's, that's not smart either. How do we necessarily throw it deep every time? Okay. You just want us to throw it every time? Yeah, yeah. That's fine. My loss of winning it down aired out.
But follow up. You're not a what he has guy then, huh? Yeah. Well, come on. You can't go both ways. Okay. See you're not a bear brank guy. Yeah. When you walk into a place like Wrigley Field, you seem to have a feel for history and stuff. I mean, Gail Sayers ran there, you know, Dick Buck is playing there. Most people don't take that thing all played and so is your field and stuff. Do you think about that kind of where you are? I will Friday because we're actually going to get to the stadium and get a chance to kind of look around and see what it looks like. Which is that end of the day? Yeah. And always does. I mean, I love whenever we were wherever I've been when you get a chance to go play in some of these iconic stadiums and players that you saw when you were growing up and play here. That's always a really cool part about what we get to do. But yeah, that'll be, it'll be fun. I think everybody's excited about playing this game. Great. Go. Thank you very much. Okay, so whenever there's no energy, hit on Brandon, bring him more energy.
What do you thought of Brian Arlin kind of running this offence in a way? He's still managed working with the receiver through him. I'm happy for him. He finally got the keys. He's probably going to be able to throw us the ball more. And what else? How do you see Jeremiah pushing himself to keep getting better after a year or even last year? I'm just probably going to be more consistent. I mean, there's a lot of things he could probably, he thinks he can improve himself and probably support like making the hard catches or probably just blocking or like footwork, like little things like that. Do you guys see that? Just in practice here? Improvements with maybe we're not seeing, but you guys see behind the scenes. We see, we definitely see the improvement. We see, we see him when he first came here until now. He's improved a lot. He's only getting better. We also see a lot of that. What about what a mechanism for you guys that's a leader making a smile? I'm like, I'm not going to be a bad boy. Mecha talked to each and every one of us. He had a relationship, a connection with each and every one of us.
We were able to come to Mecha as a man before a player in the teammate. So he allowed us to do that and open up our eyes. How's that going for you? I was going good. I'm able to talk to more players. I'm connected with other guys I've never talked to before or hanging around other groups I've never hanged around. I'm also talking to the younger guys, helping them make sure they're good. Improvement probably just being more vocal. That's me coming out of my comfort zone. I'm usually just a lead by example guy. So being more vocal for the guys around me. It'd be a hurt more. What do they talk to you about? It was always something that I could work on myself. And then they also just told me, there's no leadership in the room now with a Mecha guy. There's really no leadership on the team outside of probably Lissani. And the guys that play, so when you talk to people who listen, we need that from you guys. What's it been like going up against these corners and practicing this? How talented is that group?
They've been really well. They're all really good. So you once on your loose, you'll never ever compete in your better. Who's the best draft talker of the corners and who's the best draft talker of the series? Corner is probably IGB. Receiver Brandon. I'm sorry if you've been to Asus already, but how obviously Brandon in his step up this spring? Brandon is more and more vocal. He's obviously has a bigger role this year. He's becoming more vocal. So I love that form. Is there any different physically with him? He looks like a fast. Brandon slipped down. We think it's a jersey number going from 11 to 1. He's slipped down and got faster. It's a like wall motion. Mine? Probably you see the ball more often this year. I mean, it's only one ball. It's only like we got probably like six offensive guys. I get the ball to two right of backs. Three good receivers. Side ends, a quarter back. It's only one ball. Maybe your impression is going to be so far.
Of course, he's a great guy. He's very determined. He's probably the hardest workout that I've seen around. What's the biggest differences between Chip Gowdy and what happened? Chip Coach Gowdy was more laid back. He wasn't in our position. Coach, we didn't really hear him talker. He probably just talked to the corner back. But Coach, you can hear him on the field yelling and screaming. What was the life that you thought about that chip was leading? I was happy for Chip. I probably didn't say he, I didn't think he'd probably go stay for too long. It's hard to turn down a job like that. Opportunity is like that. So I'm happy for him. I'm also very happy for Coach Arlon who's waiting his turn here and continue to be here and stay here through the ropes. From Ryan Day, promoting from the back. I just learned Ryan Day believes in his guys. He wasn't keeping it within the end of the day. I'm sure Ryan is. You're asking for more of open for two. That's not his birthday. All you see is him. He's definitely been talking more and more comfortable with it. Guys like him when he talks to people, listen and watch what he does.
Two more questions. Yeah. It was very special being back home. That's my first time playing back there since high school. So a lot to be in Chicago and also to getting there for my family. Probably 30, 40. Yeah. It was a blessing for me definitely. I'm never, now I've never been a baseball guy. That was my first time at Riggler. It was great. Riggler is a very short fill. Hopefully I could catch you getting this year. I was in one of our local men's brand of work. Last year was one of those years where he really didn't care about maybe his status. Yeah. And what he needs to do is to be like now to see him step up as a waiter and kind of fill in and pick him in the end of the world. My mom, brand is always got his hand high. He always knew he had the way his opportunities. When he did get on the field, he made plays and took the make the best of each and every opportunity.
He's happy. He's a great mentor. He knows that he has a big role this year. He's over-expecting a lot from him. So I'm happy for him. He's happy for himself and I just can't wait for him to go show it. He's quite all the way to Chicago. I don't know. That's the culture player. I'm not trying to look up to Jack and JT and kind of have my own leadership and be able to bring people into. I feel like I have a lot of leaders on the D line and at the D position. So we kind of all kind of just count off each other and come. It's been a tough time for me to be able to open up to these guys playing with them all. You know, the key and the team just got there. And trying to keep us from moving. So these guys, how's that transition going to be? We're competitive and we love it. We're all competitive people. We all love to push each other. And I feel like we're bringing the best side of all of this. I feel like we're all just kind of bouncing off each other and seeing what one person does. And we kind of split it into our actual box and we all kind of just kind of build one great team.
You've ever been around last year and you've got to get the shot at full back in the boat. And they approach you with that idea and you can tell us how to get to them about it. Because you heard checks all your slot being. To get the test done. So I definitely did it in high school. I was full back and a little bit of Titan. So I feel like it kind of saw what I could do there in Coach Wilson. Honestly, he left watching it too before he left. And he felt like he planned that seed in Coach Day's head and Coach Day kind of just went for it. And I tried to do the best I could to do it. Is that continuing now? Do you have anything to spring? New playbook. I did not know you haven't got that far. How tough is that? You're looking back on it. I like to think of myself as a football player. I can really play any position on the field you need me to. Just give me a weaker two to learn it and kind of perfect it and try to do my best for you. Kit Jack, do the same thing. Oh yeah. What about you? Roughly, that's what I'm talking about. Kitkins is talking to Coach Johnson on Tuesday about some of the conversations.
And he sort of saw you and got out to have some conversations after JT and Jack decided to conduct. So I just kind of went into those from your perspective and how did that help you maybe get the right mindset I guess going into this. Definitely kind of seeing it all the way through. I feel like people kind of just see what happened and they don't know everything that goes into it. How long the season is now. What you got to do to prepare for and what happened in all that time from here to then. So I feel like we definitely just coached in me kind of connected. And maybe we kind of just talk man or man. And he kind of just said straight to me and I feel like we kind of both are going on. And we know we're making it yada. Making each other better every day. And we got the four best DNs, five best DNs, honestly. And the coach football and we're going to be one of the best DLIs and coach football. How do you feel like the better player today at any more again this season? Well, I feel like I've taken big steps in my roles of just being responsible and being more of a leader. And kind of stepping up and taking a step to kind of get out there more on the team and kind of bring people in.
And I feel like I'm kind of helping out more. How do you record head around the basketball team at TKFC? Does that sound like a different thing? I mean, it sounds bizarre, but I mean the season goes by so fast already. So when you're kind of like week 10 and you're like wow it's already week 10. So now it's kind of, it gives you more time to kind of enjoy it and kind of savor it. Because I'm already here for a feeling of freshness and freshness. But you don't want to spend all your powder in the first month of the year, right? There is a, that pace yourself there. There is a mindset in the season. Yeah definitely, definitely going to have the mental stability to handle all those weeks and all those practices. How much has Larry talked to you guys around like that? Last question right here. 2016, 2017, 4 NFL 2 Fetchers, all in the same organization. How much does he talk to about that? I mean, he doesn't have to talk about it. We know about it. You've seen it every day. We watch the film. We see them all working together. We know what it could be. We know we could become. So we know we're right at the same, we're at the right place at the right time. And God wanted us to be here.
And he knew we wanted us all to come together and kind of play together and be able to bounce off and just perfect our craft together. And I feel like we all are just great individuals and we come together at something special. You, you, Caleb and Nathan, grown through, especially the last half of the season, you know, especially like they've been using you, you know, and almost at safety role of stuff. How much is it grown that you can put your finger on? Yeah, I was growing immensely. I mean, Caleb, he makes a lot of checks. Nathan makes a lot of checks. I listen to them. Whatever they need, if I need to cover somebody, I'll go cover anybody. If they need me to do run support, I'll do run support. And it's really what Caleb does, what we do and Nathan. It just goes back to Coach G's preparation. And everyone's preparation to give us more flexibility and doesn't matter who's in those positions. And we can all play every position whether it's covering somebody or running and tackling. Did you feel like that was the case before the Oregon game? You're saying what I'm saying? I mean, is that something's been added to just, you know, rely on a little bit more. Go ahead.
Yeah, it did. I was probably playing Nebraska game, Megan and more safety reps. And we had a five week to prepare. So I really learned to play book a lot more. Even though I knew the playbook, I learned a lot more. Like in debt, you know, so really just after the Oregon game, it helped me a lot to go back to safety. Go to NICU everywhere. You guys had a lot of issues of giving up big plays in the passing game of the first game against Oregon. What do you feel if you guys need to do better this time around to make sure that doesn't happen? Just the same same mindset. We got to challenge these receivers. You know, every dog has her day. Maybe some people didn't have their day that game, but we'll look out there and hopefully change the narrative. And we still play with the same confidence, same technique. And, yeah. Bill Rebellion, what's the problem with this batch? And Denzel obviously had a tough game and that one. What have you seen from him and how he's responded?
Do you get a sense of from him? How he's for this rematch? Oh, yeah, he's super stoked for this rematch. His preparation has been very good. He's always been preparing. Even though it didn't go the way he wanted to go that game. But he just always had his confidence. And we're going to see a big game out of him this week. And, you know, I know you guys wanted to play them in anapolis. But the fact that you get to play them at the Rose Bowl, I mean, get a second chance. And people have said, you don't get that very often. How determined are you guys to take advantage of it? We're super, super determined. We watched film. I mean, we've lost a lot of film. The first time we played them, now we've got another six games that they played up film to watch. And it's just, they've grown a lot as a team. Same as us. We've grown a lot. We're not the same team. We were when we played them week one or weeks six or whatever. But now we're out there and going to play fast, physical and everything like that. All right, Jordan. We're going to jump to the Zoom question here from Joey Kaufman.
Columbus Dispatch. Oh, my bad. Not too joint. Cameron T. Robinson, the athletic. Hey, Jordan, you've moved around a lot in the second day in your career. And now kind of getting some many more safety reps. What is it like at this point when Walt or Coach Mills comes to you and asks you to do some else? And just how much can you lean on the experiences you've had moving around when you're trying to learn something new in the middle of the season? It means a lot. We always talk about what this is being on selfish, whether that's making plays or not making plays or doing your job so another person can make plays. That's kind of what we pride ourselves on. And it's just fun. We move around different positions. I'm always up for a new challenge. And a lot of people in the country can't do that. I just hold myself to that standard where I can play any position and excel at it. Okay. If anybody else needs a question, let me know. But otherwise we're going to go to Austin more of the podcast.
Jordan, when you were talking about watching film, Oregon, which one do you think is more valuable to you watching that against yourself? Seven games ago, even if you've changed or the ensuing six games for Oregon, which one do you put more stock in? Kind of both. For me, I kind of watched what I did, things I did well, things I didn't do too well against them. And their team, their scheme has changed. Some players have been out those stretch of games. So I really watched the past game we played. And I know they're going to go back to some of the stuff that they liked, of course. And different games like Penn State, maybe Illinois, they run a lot of men. So just watching, watching stuff like that, every game matters. So, yeah. Thank you very much. Thank you. Me and Lil are very vocal, even in practice a lot of times, just things they go my way in the game, but even in practice a lot. Yeah, take care. I was very comfortable with Lil. More vocal guy.
But working in that offer put it back down here doing a little job. Just pulling to the ceiling, taking our feedback, not for its criticism, but just because we love it and we want to invest in it. Just doing that and just keep rolling on that all the way to far and all the interesting things that just takes you. You are doing some more outside for serious stuff as well. Yeah, I've been more, the more years you get under your belt, the more experience you get. You can start knowing this offense more and more and not just your position or what you're doing or like everybody's job. What you're doing, how you're doing and why you're doing it. So I mean, yeah, I've been wrapping the outside ZXH. Anywhere Coach Hanlon needs me to just really be that guy and go make a play on it. What's the biggest difference for you between outside and outside? The pace. A route concept you can kind of get. The pace you can play within the slides more for Nesgame and the slide. Something I got very comfortable with. Just the ways you can attack the defense, I think. Just you know, conceptually and also just, you're placed down.
But I mean, just doing both and just making me a better guy for the NFL. And that's what Coach Hanlon produces on the NFL, on the NFL, on the NFL. I'm feeling very comfortable with that. Do you have to have a different mindset as a slide receiver? That's what's going on. Absolutely. I think it's more thinking. I think it's more of a, you have to have understanding of the game a lot. And the slide you've got to have a feel. It's just natural. I feel like it's more natural position. On the outside, it's just more, you know, get different things and see different coverage. You see different player types of corners and nickel bats and safeties more in the slide. So just seeing how you can attack knowing your person now and how you can attack some people. That's how I say the biggest difference. Do you have that more courage? You have that more courage in the slide? Oh yeah, absolutely. Especially like being myself in the slide faster. A skinnier guy that want to put hands on and want to get physical with you. But you just got to match that and just let them know that you there too. So you as a ballast question, whatever gets you want to go regardless inside outside.
I'm just willing to make plays and show one one of the best receivers in America. So that's in the outside, that's in the inside. Whatever coach Hong Kong in this team needs me help us land in the show. And the best receivers in America. Thank you, sir. Thank you, sir. We're really deep. I was saying I'm not sure but I know that we are the toughest men on the team. I know we don't have anything. We got the cake and the screen. I was saying we wanted to be that in the screen but now we are in the ball. I don't know where that happened. I know that it's out of the way. We're bringing Max along. I'm trying to keep the sun going up. We're not going to go that way. We're going to dedicate. He's been picked that up and he's done really, really well. So I think the whole unit in the hour and we're tough and that's very, very cool. And I'm thinking about what's going to happen.
Yeah. How do you feel about that? Well, I would like to do a sideline. And you can see the line of the screen. And if you're going, if you're pushing the guy, pass last courage, it's a plus. If you're going back, come up the ball and hit the guy. And I would say I'm telling Max and other guys, I'm a teller. When I was in the off the ball and the first alignment, I was running through the screen. I was like, do I have to be very close? If I miss my missful state, you know, we're not, I'm not as big as that. I'm not as big as that. I'm not strong as those guys.
I was running the plane ball and we've seen some huge strides there. So this would be really physical downpill team. I'm excited for the reddish ones. I don't know. That'd be very, very good. I know that's what I can do. I wonder if I can run all my time. I don't know what I'm doing right now. I just hear that when you don't step very much. And then there's a couple of that legs. I mean, I don't know what I'm doing right now. Yeah. Yeah. So last year I was a non-travel, obviously. So I would come in and then three hours for it to be walking. I would set up a guy's back for a walker. And I would set up a satellite with my jersey on and walking. So I can't say it did it. But, you know, I have learned, like I've said before, I've learned from him. But like, man, when I have to be like set up like you guys do, it's like you really, you don't take it for granted really much. And I think I've had a game-based experience. So I decided to make a movie for you. I think I've had a game-based experience.
That's what I was doing. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. It's awesome. It's really smooth. How do you use the aloe vera? You're working on your tech heroes under the back. Yeah. I mean, I don't like the specs. I was thinking 50% was 25% for me. But, you know, it's a little bold and coverage. I, uh, I promise, I'll be a lot harder for this book, but I think I'll be best-for-ides in the past, but I'll be ready to run out of time. I've been really focused on the movie. Thank you. Thanks, Ben. You're welcome to see you. Yeah. Of course, the movie really helped me out. I'm really going to have some days I have trouble, and I'm really busy. Can you play in Lackel Rider? Yeah. Can you do that? Yeah. Are you going to have to pull time there? Are you still working on the movie? Uh, how was that?
I've been in the boat, too. You haven't tried the movie. How did you get in time? Um, maybe I don't know. It didn't really mean me halfway. You've got to be very lucky. I am about to act in. You obviously said the whole last week was really weird. You were in the sun and water. And now you're in the sort of window of the game. For this season, you feel like you're still trying to cover about the wall or is your wall just all bent apart? Um, I think my wall is aimed at like, they've been going to find some kind of place of play. It's wherever it is left right inside us. I feel like they were going to find a place to move the wall. And I'm just trying to get better at the play. And as I can... You say, take it from me. What makes that more fun? It's not the world that's like, it's not faster than like, I'm pulling myself like that. You can see what's going on. I like being out of the higher level. Yeah. You can talk to Donovan at all, whether it be during the last season or this whole season,
just about what was it he for him to be able to move around and do different things? Yeah. He's been back here, compared to him. I will talk to him about some stuff. And he's really been helping me like, like, priest snap with the VN, how the sword is turned, what's expected of the cast, where he runs around. And I'm grateful for that. He can't go in through it, and then help him go through it. How long have you been here? I've heard that. How long have you been here? I mean, just how I was raised, I just know how to work. That's all I have to do. He's given effort and just going east out of there. I want to say this with full respect. When we see JJ and Sonny, it's like, that makes sense. When you're the third guy, were you surprised to be named? What puts you in that same category? Yeah, I was a little surprised. I kind of have feeling, because like, it kind of like, I mean, I kind of, I could have guessed it, but like, I just knew, like, I was one of my goal to talk to him, be an iron bug guy, and I just couldn't work there with him.
So what did you get in now? What did it mean? How did you take it? It was very special. We're right after a text in my parents. And they really knew what it meant, until like, the video came out, and the question they explained it to us. So then, so then, that's what it's really, it's very special. Back really, in FLY-OFF, it was playing both rock, and white bars and games. Did you just detail the difficulties of going back and forth? Not just like, we were learning that we actually had to play both of those bars. Yeah, it's pretty difficult, especially dirt and game, you have to put the whole mind around. It's not easier in practice, because it's not getting like, several down, but like, going left and right in game. It's pretty hard, but like, like in high school, like I was, it was every other way I was going back and forth with the triple out. And so like, I knew, I knew it, I was comfortable with it. And sometimes, I just take it, and I'm walking to go around to my scrimmage, I had like, I say it to be the same, but I can't, and I'm more time to get into my head.
You bring in two factors, and then you put in the brain, and try to find a way to go up. You put it up, and you set it up like that. I put it out, and you try to keep it up, and it also helps. Yeah, so like, I got to set the example, and then, like, my first two weeks here, I was like teaching them, like, like, I don't know what they're expecting these plays, because I've seen some new plays for them, and even new defense, like, like, technique two, because I keep the same technique, but, just helping them out, because we need all of this. What do you like, when did you idea of playing, back what kind of kind of kind of about, that you, about like, the same middle, and what you're going to play, and how do you like to know about? It came close to the springtime. They wanted to have, they just wanted to have a good fight out there, and they wanted to play the best, so they just, yeah, I can choose. What do you want to do all of this? They're awesome. They're great. A lot of eyes, and it's awesome, because everyone's watching something. It's not like, someone's only watching this place, so you know what's going on.
You got to feedback to get, like, after a play, after a practice, when you're all three off, you're all five. It's awesome. They can, they can, they tell you like, everything, because they know like, what's the last I had, like coach Johnson, coach Dickie's watching, and coach him. But when it feels a lot, it's like, you really, you know what's going on, it's great. How was the experience that you got at the big reps and the big games, all that helped, like coming into the song? It really boosted my confidence, and like, and I can like, lead the young guys to, because I know it was going on, because they really don't really, this is first time spring, so like, they're doing my, my stuff's like, just that leadership of them. Resortability has also been mentioned a lot, it's been all both sides of all, playing in different spots, you know, I rate on that. Yeah, this, yeah. Congratulations. Before this draft, Denzel Ward was asked about what buckais he wanted to have on the team, and your name was brought up, and he said, there would be a great addition for you to come on to the team
and join him on this roster, and him to have said that about you before you were picked. What does that mean to you? Uh, I mean, you know, two, two, a higher guys growing up here, you know, three were high as just, it's a great feeling. You know, we know we're, we're familiar with the area, and you know, just they hear our whole career, I mean, from top-oriented, high school middle school, or to college, or high school middle school, or to college, or high school middle school, or to college, or high school middle school, you know, and then you still think, oh, I'm at the top of the, the peak of the level, so it's just great. Hey, Michael, we know you ended up at Streetsboro, but I understand you started at Benedict. Could you, where were you born and how did you end up in Streetsboro? Um, so I was born in Garford Heights originally, and then I lived there just about, uh, my title, I, and then, when I got to a H, or the 15, that was, uh, that was like at the end of the, uh, Benedict, and then my mom promised, and I bought my Streetsboro, that was a, uh, uh, it was a better pay. So she decided, you know, it was better for us to move out there, and Benedict, he was going to be an hour drive every day to get to school, so it just wasn't the best thing that I could do.
I was going to drive every day to get to school, so it just wasn't, uh, it's been a fishin' with her. So, my last three years of high school out there, Streetsboro, my sophomore year, uh, senior year. Hey, Michael, Tom, with us on the AP, we, we saw it on TV just a little while ago that you became a dad during the season last year. What, what's fatherhood been like for you? How's that changed you? Yeah, it's been the best, it's been a greatest addition to my life, for sure. Now teach me a lot of patience, uh, you know, just, uh, being a big role, I'm like a father, I'm a little bit scared. Uh, I mean, it's just the best feeling, uh, for him to even be on the outness of witnessing this, and he's in all the videos, and you know, just give him something good and look back on like, you know, dang, my dad did some real positive stuff. Hey, Mike, Chris Eastman, Reneak, and Beacon Journal. Uh, you've talked about playing, you know, coming, you know, staying in the same area, and, you know, playing in your backyard. Do you feel like, you know, I don't want to say, put pressure, but, the opportunity to sort of be,
you know, be a role model, be, you'll be someone that, hey, look, like you say, I came from here, I can, look where I can go. How much do you sort of take that, you know, take that mindset, take, you know, you'll take that responsibility on. So, I, I mean, I'm not, you know, I'm not one of those guys who's gonna run away from the pressure, I mean, I went to it, a little ahead on, so, you know, there's gonna be a lot of pressure on me playing in my hometown, you know, a lot of people are gonna have to buy a good nation, but, you know, at the end of the day, as a player, I still have the man, you know, that I have to be, and concentration. So, I'm gonna hold myself very, you know, high on that, hold myself accountable, and just gotta be the best player that I can be at control of the trouble. Michael, I'm sure you watched the, the success that Duane Jones had here last year, as a rookie. How excited are you to join Duane, and, maybe kind of follow in his footsteps in getting off to a great start as a rookie? Oh, yeah, that's my dog, you know, Duane, he just called me right before this.
I mean, just, we were talking about this the whole time, even, you know, even with my portal. In my, my 30 days visit, you know, there's a saying like, man, if you get here, it's, you know, it's over there. Like, you know, the best duo, like, and all of that, you know, off his defense-wise, and we bring a lot of juicin practice, even at the Ohio State, so I know it's gonna be, you know, 10 times more at the, you know, neck level, but really blessed to be able to play with my brother, I play with my brother for life. Hey, Mike, I guess your teammates started calling you baby Aaron Donald, pretty early on. Is, is that true? And I guess what did that mean to you? You're that from them. I mean, I feel like that's a, you know, that's a great, you know, that's a great experience. For sure, you know, a lot of, a lot of people can't just be compared to that. So, you know, I mean, it's just shows, you know, how, how my teammates are, you know, are about me, but, you know, just really appreciative of them, and just be around, surround the black eyes, and know this. Top of the top best of the best, you know, in the country. Hey, Michael,
Ashley Bastak from Cleveland.com again. I think we ask every D-Lineman who gets drafted here about the opportunity to play with Miles Garrett. Just how much does that excite you, knowing the season he's coming off of, and how excited are you to get a chance to pick his brain every day? Oh, yeah, no doubt. Me from day one, I'm definitely going to be, you know, whatever he does. I mean, he's just real, you know, aware of like, you know, how does he get his body right? What does he do? What does he do? What does he do? And after practice, you know, those guys, those veterans, they're not veteran or reason, they're not in this league, you know, playing multiple years back to back, having these great seasons, you know, so it's just, it's just a great honor to be around somebody like that. And, you know, it's just going to be, I got to come in and put my heart on, from day one to, you know, whenever I leave. Michael, how much interaction did you have with Jim Schwartz in this whole process? See the, pro day or your visit here? Yeah, it was just really just my visit here. Yeah, Coach Schwartz was just, you know,
he made me go to Jacques Rommie. It's all throughout there. We're, hey, we're all home, but they were just, you know, surrounded by me throughout the whole of the day. So, you know, just building a great relationship from the beginning. We came, we came back to, and Michael, I know obviously the Ohio State guys, there's a bunch of guys that went back this, this next year, were you tempted at all to, to go back and try to chase the championship with those guys? Like, how close did you actually come to that before you decided to go to the NFL? I kind of made my decision before I decided to see you and start it. I was pretty sure on that, you know, especially when I had my son late in the, late in the year, I was going to try to, you know, it wasn't like I was tempted to go back. I mean, for sure, I mean, I feel like, you know, it's still, it's still unfinished business, but, you know, Michael has to do what was right from our family, and it was just, it was just better for that, you know, that way. I got to, you can't think about it as just a me, a personal, you know, a preference. I got to think about it as a whole.
Darius, Darren Urban from AZCarnels.com. I know that, a lot of players these days aren't sticking to one school. For a long time, you did it for five years. I mean, you've, Marvin did it for three. Like, what, what, what behind that? And why wasn't meaningful for you to stand one school? Yes, I'm a Zura. You know, we had some tough seasons, but we were really built with a edge. Energy details, grit, emotional consistency. And I just find myself just trying to grow and get better each year. And also as a team, you know, win more games each year. And that was my, that was my home, that was my family, I was blessed, you know, get two degrees as well off the field. And I just love Mizzou. Two degrees. Wow. Okay. See you soon. Marvin, Bob McManum, Arizona Republic. Congratulations. Thank you. To both of you. You're known as all business. And I want to know how that's going to serve you well in this league from personal standpoint. Your brand, everything you do or a daily preparation. There's a lot that goes into being all business.
Tell me what that is to you. Yeah, I mean, it's just being a pro. It's kind of a raised and grew up to do. And keep the same mindset, same attitude that I've had throughout my whole career. Once I get here, continue to work hard, be consistent, disciplined, you know, and all that I do. So I'm looking forward to putting in the work. Hey, Marvin, Josh Wayne, trust ESPN. What were the best pieces of advice your dad gave you about being an NFL player? I mean, yeah, it takes a lot of work, a lot of preparation. No, from Monday to Saturday. It's all working. And then Sunday should be the easy part. I go out there, I have fun. I probably put the work in. So, I'll start with the work first. And then once Sunday comes, it's reap benefits. Hey, Darryus. Howard Balls are from CardsWire. I can't help but notice that ring on your fingers. Is that a Cotton Bowl ring? Yes, it is the Cotton Bowl ring. It's a short story. You showed it to Marvin very quickly. No, I just saw it to Marvin. I was telling Marvin,
you know, he was glad he didn't play. I mean, the whole week leading up. You know, you see how it stayed, everybody said, okay, Marvin Harrison. And then he was like, is he going to play? Is he going to play? He didn't play. So, you know, we lucked out. So, Hey, Marvin, Paul Kelvici, Cardinals Broadcasting. Do you believe that receivers have to earn the trust to their quarterback? And if so, what does that usually require? Absolutely. You got to earn the trust of the quarterback. And then it starts, you know, every day in practice, and being consistent, really. And you can't just do it one day. You can't just do it for one week. Has to be, you know, done over and over and over again. I think that's how trust is earned. So, no matter where you get picked, whether you're a first receiver, it's around seven. Doesn't really matter how to go in the earn, trust the quarterback. Your coaches, your teammates. So, it all starts in practice. What's going on, guys? Good to see you again, Tyler Drake. There's no sports systems for Darius. What's the feeling of just being able to represent your school as that first round pick? And what kind of impact can that have for those guys falling in your
footsteps? Yes, awesome. I feel like I'm setting the standard going for it, but that's named Mizzou, is known as D.L.A. Mizzou. So, I'm just added to the family, but now I feel like I'm setting the standard for my younger teammates, that this is attainable if you work really hard, be consistent, and really get the trust of strength coach. I feel like every program is built out to strength coach, and that develops all the habits on and off the field. Darius Zacher, Smenese, Carnels.com right over here. J.G. mentioned that he loves the violence that you play with. You mentioned the different tendencies that you picked up. The emotional consistency is the great. How do you balance that? The violence with discipline on the field. I also just do preparation and practice. I'm a big guy, I'm a big believer in inside hands, so that's why I'm always working my hand placement, and then I lift weights, so you know that's all connected. So, I'm just trying to be focused on my technique as much as possible. Hey, Marvin. Over here, David Brant, with the Associated Press. You know, a lot of rookies come into the league, and they get a little
bit of leeway. It's like, oh, he's young, he needs to grow and stuff like that, but obviously you're going to be expected to be the guy here really quickly. How do you deal with that pressure? How do you go about just so much being expected of you so quickly? I mean, yeah, I've high standards for myself, but I'm just going to go in there and try to work, you know, the best I can. I just want to help the team win really, so whether the role I play come September, let me do my best, and I'll do that role. Now, this one's for both of you guys. The fans want to know who you guys are on the inside. I don't know how much you're willing to reveal to us today. A lot would be nice. Can you tell us what you like to do away from football, what pisses you off about things, and you know, what makes you roll? I'm pretty simple, I like to be in my apartment. Watch the movie, if I go out and go to a restaurant, get some food, but I would not only do too much, and then I'm pretty easy going, guys, so I'll try not to let nothing bother me too much.
I say the same thing, a real chill guy, just really obsessed with football, but outside of football, like I said, I got my two degrees, I got my undergrad, hospitality management, and a minor in business. I got my master's in a positive culture with emphasis, athletic leadership. So just thinking about being well-rounded, and then I do philanthropy work, I start my own non-profit foundation, Darius Robinson, helping hands foundation, but really just football, and then everything else, honestly. Congratulations, guys. Welcome to the Valley, and Robbie Baker with Fox 10. Darius, this is for you. After the draft last night, you had a great response about how you're processing, preparing for a game. You're just kind of wondering where your love for kind of the grind comes from, and your love for that process comes from. I would say my junior year, because I play literally ball often on, but I got my junior year, and I was playing high school. And my whole goal was just to earn a scholarship. But during that process, I really fell in love with the game, fell in love with working out, relationships with teammates, and now I was kind of like my vice,
and I can't let it go, and just kind of finding ways to always get better, you know. Luke Lidden here with 12 Sports. Congrats both of you. Welcome to the Valley. This one's for you, Marvin. I'm curious to your thoughts, or what was that conversation like with your dad after your name was called, and you were able to be drafted by this organization, and how surreal is it for you to be following on your own father's footsteps, but in your own way? Yeah, it was very brief. Actually, just in the second graduations, I walk up to the stage, and then I had to do a bunch of interviews at the word. So I don't think I've hit both of us yet, and what's happened. I think one of my goals always made him proud, so I hope I did that. Marvin Bobrock, PHNX Sports. When do you anticipate catching your first passes from Kyle Murray? I don't know. I don't know, I guess we'll see. I hope we get as soon as possible. Derek, you mentioned philanthropy, and I know there's been, it's been talked about how you took some of the NIL money to do a get back to school for the kids in Columbia.
Where did that belief in doing those things come from? I say my family, my brother, my mom, really instilled that into me. And to me, out of young ages, give back your blessings to others. And my fifth year at Mizzou was the best year of my life, so why would I not share my blessings with others? So that's what really motivated me to do that, and now being in NFL, my goals are due three events each year. I just give back, because you know it's life outside of football and bigger blessings out there. Marvin, you obviously played with a number of highly drafted receivers at Ohio State. What sort of feedback have you gotten about the NFL from them, and about making the transition and the league itself? Yes, a long season. I think going from the 12 game-workout season, you have in college to, was it 17 games now, and you have three pre-season, I think actually just the biggest challenge. The game stays the same. Obviously, never all skilled and very talented athletes, so the mental part is probably the biggest thing, and the biggest change from the college to the pros. Marvin, what's your timeline for hiring an agent right over here?
I'm a way far right. You haven't hired an agent. Why is that? Is there a timeline for hiring one, and are you going to sign the NFLPA licensing agreement? I'll continue to talk on my team. We do what's best for me. I'm moving forward. We just take it one day at a time. I just got drafted, so I'm trying to enjoy the moment and be happy while I can. Got the moment. Hey, Marvin. I'll say a little bit more about growing up with your dad, and the experiences you had in Indianapolis and games, and so on and so forth. Yeah, I mean, there's no better role model, coach, mentor that you can have as someone who's played the game, and then he's actually a father too. He means a lot to me. He's helping get to the point I'm at right now, and she's been very detailed in everything I've done. Growing up with playing football, so we're thankful for him. I've got that he can be here with me today. Luke, letting again here with 12 sports. Is this for Daria Starris? M-I-Z? Zero, yeah, sir.
I'm a moderate as well. Curious, what do you think you learn the most from your time at M-ZU that has helped you be ready for this moment? I would say the biggest thing is not how you start as how you finish. I have to feel like me being drafted. That was the exclamation point on my career at M-ZU. But now I've got to start all over again and really earn respect on my teammates and coaches and then earn a role within our organization. But that's what I would say. Marvin over here. What's it like being another Buckeye out here in the desert or having Paris in the front row and getting to reunite with your guy out here? It's awesome, man. I think this is kind of like two years in the making of Paris and kind of had his conversation going back to even before he got drafted in the car. And I just get a chance to play with him again. And hopefully my score sometimes touches down so he raises me up. And his arms like he used to do in college. So I'm super excited to play with him. I mean, not only is he going to be a great teammate but a great friend of half as well. Well, the tapes speak for itself. But what would you say is the most underrated part of your game?
I think just my competitiveness. I mean, I mean, I'm not sure I'm not much of an emotional guy on the field but I'm very competitive because I'm very underrated part of my game. Yeah, that's it. So thank you so much. Of course, thank you. Thank you. I think he's really starting to mold into that role and really step into it. Is that an adjustment? Obviously, it's obviously that your brother, but also that somebody who is leading football team has that been in adjustment kind of separating those two things. I mean, not really. Like we always been on a team in our whole life. And I've seen him being those leadership roles prior to this. I mean, he was stepping into it already last year. But we had eight guys in the defense leaves. And now he has to really just elevate that. Yeah, not really. I've been seeing him. I knew he was going to mold in this for a while now. So what makes sense? I think he just knows how to talk to different players. Different players require different approaches. Some players you can rip them a little bit. Some guys you might need to pull them to the side.
Some guys might need, like they have some off the field things that like he just can give some insights. It just depends on the guy. Just being able to relate to each individual player and see the person connect. I hope that helps build trust with him as a leader. Lorenzo, I was watching an interview with Lately Ransom recently. He called you the most confident guy in the world. Yeah. What do you think he meant by that? When I came here, I was seventh on the depth tour. I was nowhere where I knew to be at. But I always knew you got to have that confidence to be able to play DB here at a high level. And I think it's just going to show. I'm excited to go out here and ball this year. So you got to be a little delusional. You got to be a little delusional coming into such a competitive place. I came here playing receiver. And I think I just want to show my boy lay that really well. I wasn't delusional. I was just going to put it all together this year. But I always just been a guy who's still talking trash. Even when I might not have it all together yet, just still trying to get better every day. As you worked your way up the depth tour, you were doing a lot on special teams.
And I know the coaches have been making that a priority with a lot of younger guys. What would your message be to some of those younger guys that are trying to find their way on special teams? Yeah, on special teams. It's not a free play like that down. It's critical when it has a direct effect on winning and losing games. And you see if we miss field goals or if we are our punt games not right, we're not hitting 40 plus yards things like that has direct correlation on winning and losing football games. And really at the next level, I have some guys who've been there and we have a week like Nate Ebner. He played 10 years and he was a special teams guy. So just especially for me being a guy in my role in my situation, special teams is the most important. And I want it to be a total keeping NFL for a while. And I think the other guy should look at it as a total do. They do the same thing at least and even get an opportunity on field. Give up to still do or be a part of the kick return unit as they're... Yeah, I'm trying to get back there and return some kicks for sure. But that's also me building the trust back there for allowing me doing it. I want to be on all four units.
I know playing nickel at the next level, you see guys you got to be on special teams. And I hold a little string, stay in a wide go play. So just being a asset there will be is critical stuff in the team when this year. How much of a couple of you feel now? I mean, I don't know. I've been getting comfortable. I feel comfortable playing for a while now. I'm being honest with you guys in front of me who are good football players. But to me it wasn't really really about that. Just continuing to get on the rise. I feel like my skill sets are getting better, my games are getting better. And as long as I'm playing football, I still want to keep getting better. Give me your impressions of your main matches. Jermaine's a ball player. He's an energy giver. He's one of those guys who gets the team excited. He's talking a lot of trash, you know, he has the full cell, he has everything like that. But I think he's starting to really, I've been with him since he first came in. So I've been seeing him mature, growing to more of a leadership role. And really just he's continuing, he's a guy on the rise to getting better every single day. He's a talented football player. He's a talented football player. Yeah, I think I think you have the chance to have a great year this year.
Marzo, we've really made a food we think in this spring. First half of this spring is caught your eye. I want to give a shout to my guy Malik Hartford. But it's, I don't really think it was just a spring like in the, in the offseason. He was going real hard. We have this thing we've read our champion and he holds himself to a high standard. And he did that. And then it's just translating the field. I've been, that's who I've been watching a lot of my film with. I've been seeing him apply to the field and you getting better every day. Yes, we see, we see a late the grants of leave. We've got to step into that spot here, made. That's the evolution of football. I'm going to say this is a high state too. I mean, I know that's a, late thing was a great player. Don't, don't get me wrong, but they're kicking the ball off in a high state. And they're sandwiched the standard. So we got to have players in the big place. Who, who's making, you know, nipple back, whatever, who's making some strides in that room. I was a lot of art. Okay, you should join the competition. But how would you describe it? Oh, yeah, I mean, we, we have a lot of guys. We're position flexibilities, a big thing here.
We've got a bunch of different guys in that position. So I think Bryce West has been playing well. And I think Miles is coming along too. I think the biggest thing for all of us is just really getting them to understand the defense, getting them to know what they're doing. And they all have the skill set. So really, as that mental part develops, the physical is already there. So just put it all together and they have the chance to be really good players here. When you got like the devastation, you want to have a five star. What are the top players in the country? The initiation process with players anymore. I could make a smart up remark. I'm just going to do that. But is there, do they see a guy grow up from your eyes? Yeah, I mean, the stars, like, yeah, like, am I, so like the skills that you have or like the God given abilities. But what I want to say about Devon is just the type of person he is. He's a real good guy. I think he's ego is not crazy. Like he's a real, a little humble guy. And then he's trying to get better every single day. The stars and all that really don't matter.
There's not really initiation process. You come here, you're freshman. You got your black stripe on, you got to earn your way. And I think that's getting your teammates trust and getting the trust in your coaches. How do you see him just like, like in terms of like competitiveness, like putting himself so hard in his first spring? Oh, yeah, he's competitive. But if I'm being honest, I don't really want to, I mean, he has the hype. He's a five star in all that, but like, Ohio State, like the standard to standard. So like everyone in our room is held to the standard. And I think he's getting there meeting that standard. Like he's getting better every single day. He has to continually get better. But the traits that you want and the thing about effort going hard, being a competitor, all those things that are not the technique, not the football part. He has that there. And I think when everything else comes along, it's a great player as well. How is that standard helped you personally going into your third year now? Kind of your development over the last couple of years. I mean, yeah, I was challenged. I mean, it's either you, the sinker swim. I had guys in front of me. I had to make a choice. Like, do I want to continue to get better every single day or just be complacent?
I could just sit here and be like, okay, like this is just my situation or try to find a way. So, I mean, that's it. I made a way out of the field. And that was my goal. I had to go hard. I had to do certain things. I had to go on special teams. And those things I weren't doing before, necessarily in my freshman year playing on those special teams. I don't know. I'm trying to learn Nickelback. I came here to play corner. I'm not here playing Nickelback. So, it's sinker, sinker's win. So, I think I did that. And now it's the time just to take it to another level and continue to get better. You mentioned the confidence earlier. It said, you have to be a little bit delusional. But is it important to have that confidence, either before maybe you have everything figured out, having a position in your advantage? I mean, clearly, I mean, I would never play it if I didn't. Yeah, I would have never played it if I didn't. I came here to play corner. We have a bunch of guys here at corner. Now, I'm trying to get at Nickel. We have a dude starting at Nickel. I want to play. I have to get it on the third down package. I have to go do this on special teams. I haven't done something on special teams. So, like, yeah, you got to be a little delusional. You got to be a little delusional. All right, Lorenzo. Thank you. Thanks, man.
Hi, O'Players. And some pretty, a greedy player, man. And a little bit more. Nathan, I'm sure you were asked this about a zillion times. I'm asking you, a zillion and one. Just you personally. Does it feel like this, everything is kind of, I mean, this is just, obviously, the ultimate payoff and reward. But just for you personally going through some of the trials and tribulations you have here at Ohio State. What does this mean for you? I mean, without sounding too stupid by asking that kind of question. It means everything to me. I'm just so thankful. And God gave me an opportunity after facing so much adversity to put me in this situation to be with my brothers, my team, my family members. And go out there and just play this game. I never take any game every meeting, every practice for granted. I never take any for granted. I'm just so thankful. Did you ever get to a point where you just thought, I don't know if I can keep doing this or did that ever cross your mind? Never did. Never. I love football. I love football, man. Yeah, I love football. I thank God that he allows me to play this game every day. And, yeah, I love football. What was it like after the game?
And, you know, there was talk that you guys all had a meeting. Things got supposedly heated. Is there any truth to that? As far as like the players and the coaches you guys talk with Ryan Day and just, I mean, just kind of had a hashing out like, hey, let's come, let's come full circle on this whole thing. And this and what happens behind closed doors stays behind closed doors, but whatever happened to me to help us with a national championship. So I want to change something for the way. Well, and there you go, right? So I mean, would you say in a stupid way, not that you guys obviously wanted to lose the game. But if you hadn't, do you think you would? You'd be sitting here where you're at. I don't know. I don't think about what if I think about that. How that ring could feel on my hand. Is it national championship? Austin Ward, podcast. Cody, was that the first moment you've ever cracked? I think so. I mean, I didn't even know at the time it was it was crack. I wish I brought my feet more in that play, but that was pretty cool. I mean, I've never seen that happen before.
So, except for my home. Did you, did you guys have any sense after that it was such a physical hit? It was also a key tackle to get off the field. Like, did you think that that sent any message both for the rest of you guys on the defensive side or to Tennessee about what that game was going to be like? Yeah, I mean, we knew how important it stops. We're in that game and, you know, more so than the hit just to be able to get off the field. I think that was the huge part for us because we know if they can drive the ball and create big plays, it would be tough. It's tough. I'm long day for us on defense. So, you know, I would just, I'm happy that we got those thoughts that we needed to get. And that was one of them. And, you know, all those stops really propelled us to have a good game on defense. Bill Romino, what's the climate this batch? Cody, what changed the most after the awarding game and the reengineering of the defense? Was it mindset? Was it a schematic thing? What changed the most? I'd say the most prominent change is really that attitude in that mindset. I mean, we played good before that and we'd done a lot of things.
But, you know, sometimes you need a little juice and a little bit of that. So, obviously stuff has changed. Scheme has changed. Stuff has, like, attitude has changed. But I think we had that mentality that we have to be able to win games no matter what on defense. And to be able to do that, I mean, we say it all the time in our meetings. It doesn't matter what the offense does. We should be out there and go out there and be able to win the game. So, I think we brought back that mentality and it's just got to keep going. You know, it can't just stop a tendency. It has to keep going to Oregon. You played so well before that. And then that kind of came out of nowhere. How about you, the legal awakening? Was it how much to make you realize, okay, we're not there yet? I know. We had, that was a rough two weeks for us after that game. We had to, like, really, we had a lot of tough conversations. We had a lot of overhaul and just, you know, really looking in words to ourselves. And what do we have to change? And, you know, I think what we've done so far has been pretty well. And we have to keep that going because it doesn't matter. It's really what you've done lately. So, you do have to do that for this next week.
Stephen, it means clip.com. If you were a coach, how would you grade a JT Snap with a linebacker? Because Tennessee. Snap is a linebacker. Now, I mean, I give a lot of credit to, to, to Nico as a quarterback. I mean, he did this thing, moving around the pocket. It's not easy, like, trying to, oh, you said JT as a linebacker. For me, how would you, how would you grade a JT Snap? As a linebacker? Oh, I mean, some tough plays. I mean, that's football though. Sometimes, you know, guys get juked, guys get whatever happens. But, you know, he always keeps coming. That's the best part about JT. Like, he'll never stop playing as hard as possible. So, we're, I'm just, I'm happy he kept going and he made a lot more plays after that too. You said that it's very different talking and running back than a quarterback. Just, you know, what's the main difference between having to tackle those two types of players? What I've noticed is, I mean, when quarterbacks are scrambling and they're particularly, like, good scramble threats, they use that ball fake a lot more.
And it's, no matter what, even if they're past a line, it's still threatening. Like, it's just the mentality, like, the playing defense. You're always worried about them throwing the ball. So, they can, they have a little bit more wiggle, whereas running backs, you know, there's a certain amount of jukes moves that they could use or whatever moves they use. So, I mean, I think a lot of the things that we do is just trying to just treat quarterbacks you scramble, like running backs, you know, just try to stay down because, you know, your presence affects it no matter what. So, if you're jumping for throws, you're probably going to be wrong. All right, we have time for a couple more. I think we just have one. If someone else wants to jump in, but we got Tim May, I'm in the wrong. I was trying to hold my hand up. Coven, what has your interaction been like with Caleb and Nathan especially from standpoint of feedback? You know, maybe between plays, maybe on the sidelines after series and stuff? Is it grown as the season has gone and what do those guys especially bring to the table in that regard? I mean, they've always been really great problem solvers throughout this entire year.
You know, our communication is strong, in-tune drives and everything. I think they do a wonderful job. Both of them just, you know, diagnosing what's going on and then, you know, if we need to fix, they're always on top of this stuff. Our coaches are great at that too. They make sure that any little issue is being taken care of and we communicate within the positions, but, you know, they really get that stuff. And one other thing with you, I'm just be honest, I thought from like the late and the fourth quarter on against Nebraska and then since then, you seem to have been a different player. Maybe I'm wrong. I mean, I don't know if there was an epiphany there or whatever, but can you describe your drive or whatever from, you know, that was a close game. It was, you know, I think surprised a lot of people. You understand what I'm saying? But you seem to be a, you're personally seem to be a more driven, different player. Am I wrong about that? Well, I mean, I don't, I feel like I've been taking, you know, the meetings to the field to practice everything. I want to say I've been consistent and, you know, I'm just being able to be in position to make more plays.
And, you know, I'm thankful for that, but I mean, we're just, really, it's really just me. Well, I'm just trying to be consistent and, you know, doing what day in day out, not taking any day for granted and not doing anything that I wouldn't do if I wasn't playing well. So. Is that a hailstorm? Yeah, I'm not sure what to come on. Okay. All right. Final question. Dan, hold. Love it. Cody, when you guys are looking bad for a good game, obviously, you know, statistically really annoying because he mentions here. How much do you look at it as we had an off night? How much do you look at it as they're really good offense that's capable of exposing blood. Is there a good game for you? I think it's a little bit of both. I mean, we definitely did not play to our standard no matter what. I mean, that's that's number one. But they also play a good game. And, you know, we're both a good team. That's why we're in the Rose Bowl and playing against each other. So, you know, it's going to be on us to be able to execute and do our job to the best of our ability. And, you know, that's what we're, that's what we're spending all this time practicing for.
Like we're doing walkthroughs everything because, you know, we need to, when we get to that moment, we got to do it right. And, uh, it didn't get to the last game. So, for whatever reason, we'll get those fix and we'll, uh, make the changes and just stare and go out there and get a win. Being in the last year, what do you want to do when you're in the last season? Yeah, I feel like, uh, Seth, he's definitely made a big impact on how I play the game now. I feel like I look at the, I look at like first and second down different because I feel like he's game a lot of information on how he sees the defenses, how they move and stuff like that. So, I feel like Seth has become like a really good factor in my game and how I improved. For a guy like that to come in from Alabama and immediately and I appreciate himself to you guys to fit in like that. What do you, what inside you get into, like what it means to be able to do? Yeah. In your group, you get up here and I'll say, I'm playing like you won the game last year. I feel like, you know, Seth, when Seth came in, I knew Seth was a really good player at BAMMA. He's playing those big games, so, you know, just learning and everything he's done and how he like takes the next step. And how he gives his features is something I took, took notes.
Josh, you guys obviously have quite a turning nucleus there. I'm into your line, you, Carson, you, Tecra, Austin, how have you seen just the chemistry of you guys growing up the last couple of years? Yeah, I feel like everything is just like binding together. I feel like we're all just playing really good next to each other and everything's been going really well. Do you feel just, you know, physically stronger when you're messing with those big interior linemen versus last play? Definitely. I feel like it's a really big thing. It's something I've noticed over the years is that I've improved on. It's definitely my strength and coach makes definitely got us going. How do you notice it just in the game? I feel like just over like these past summer, just getting stronger as I can. And then like you just see it over and over and over, you just like can stay in those reps. Those big time reps, you can just like stay in. I'm just kind of learning from the set, taking notes and things like that. How does that manifest itself in the heart before? Yeah, I feel like Seth, you know, what he's done, how he controls the offense, he makes the ID, gets everything going, makes sure it gets off and set.
I feel like it's something I took no time. What's the like going back home after the national championship? You know, it was, it felt surreal. I mean, something I like, you dream of as a kid, you know, as a kid you grow from Ohio. You always dream about playing for Ohio State, you know, it's just great that I'm able to be here and play in a national championship. It's like wrestling experience still helps you as you're changing the body. Oh, yeah, I feel like definitely. I feel like my mentality still is something like wrestling has definitely developed my mentality and my natural, like I go out there and I try and like basically just choice all the other time. Anyone I go against, I feel like I'm trying to show him. What's been your impression of the last one? Oh, yeah, Coach Bill on his death, a great person. He definitely gets his going. He's a really good, obviously I'm coach. I'm going to get the odds, they aren't strong on the 20s, the ones who aren't strong on the gold line. Just a big deal. Thank you, Josh. Good. Thanks, Chris. Yeah. I'd say it feels like a dream, but at the same time, I think you just take it day by day.
You can't look forward to the game. You have to have a good Tuesday practice, have a good Wednesday practice, have a good Thursday practice and just make sure that those days are complete to where you can build up to that game and see how you're going to do in the game. What's your point in the season this far and what are the things you've worked on in practice? I think it's more just mental. Just seeing what the defense is, what their scheme is, and then also just making sure that you have the right technique for those defenders and stuff like that. Josh, just talk to you guys on my screen, don't wear a red and dialysis. Just talk about that. All you guys are perfect. Hey, just a full version. It has been a grind. And then I mean, just plainly. Can you give me any insight on what's kind of hurt you before it office applying for? Yeah, you'd say everything. I mean, we hit on a daily basis all the time. So you could have knee pain, ankle pain.
You could have headaches, you have shoulder pains, you have hands, wrist, thumb, anything. But I think it just shows that we're willing to do whatever to play. What's driving? What an asses championship. What an asses championship. That's what's driving me more than ever because it's a memory that'll last a lifetime if you go and do it. They're trying to turn the path here. The chance of ordering you which players and what. You're one game. I think it's paid off. And for a national championship, if you were to tell me that when I was 10 years old, being a starting right tackle to how state. I would say I'd say some cuss words at you and then and tell you to go away. Not that much, but yeah, it's Indiana. So, yeah. I don't know, I guess you could say I'm gotten it out.
I just I don't look at myself more than I'm just looking inside that huddle during the offense when we're when I'm calling a play and I'm like, I got to do it for these guys. Put so much in for him. No, another name didn't recruit me when I was going out through high school. But I don't have any ill will against that. They didn't didn't think I was a good enough football player so. No, I don't think that's any motivation. I don't I don't look at it like that. Maybe that they recruited different guys and classes, but I don't look at it as any of will. I think it's just shows that it's like an NFL style season.
I mean, it's it's crazy to think what we were and we was at 16 or 17. And it's just I think it prepares you for the next level more than ever because it's basically I wouldn't say it's NFL, but the playoffs and all that stuff. It's kind of coming together as the NFL. Sleep. Sleep going in the train room. Spend hours in there. Then go in the film room with ice pack on or stem or something like that and start watching film. I think it's like a 20 24 7 thing that you always got to keep your body right to make sure that you're ready to perform at the level you want to perform at. So you're not another way to explain that they do it. Where y'all come from that home?
That day was an oh shit for me. It was. It was just to see where he went from the winter time to being the guy who wouldn't talk anything and being all American, Remy to winner. Yeah, it was it was a it was a dark point and in this season for us as a line, but I had confidence in Carson right away. I mean, I he played 12 games and he did find I thought he did find those 12 games. So I had complete another confidence in Carson. Yeah, I think it just shows that. It's just the center's guards tackle. They just need time. Time to I mean, you're not going to do amazing your first season. Unless you're Michael Jordan or something like that. But it's it shows that it's just a development.
And I mean are like our slogan is developed here. I mean, just to see him come from last season to this season. Yeah, I coach fries a great offense line coach. He knows what right what technique to use on every single play. He buses ask for us. Even though people give him hate all the time, I don't understand. I don't see why he's a he's a great human being. He just wants the best for us. And I think that's what you see at him every single day is he's trying to push us to be the best for ourselves. Do you think the job. Yeah, I think they've done an unbelievable job. And it just shows the selflessness of all three of those guys. Because Tegros starting for the season, Austin was left guard and then Luke jumps in there. But those guys haven't complained one bit of, oh, I want to get more playing time or something like that.
They've been selfless and it's amazing to see. I've got a lot of Jackson said that Jack Sawyer called him and recruited and tried to get some of these guys. What do you remember about Jack's goal and trying to get everyone to come back to you before more time? Yeah, I knew I was coming back. So there was no recruiting for me. I was kind of on the outside of that because it was only my first year of playing or first year starting. But I just remember just of fire and jack's eyes, you see, because Ohio native Ohio state guy, literally the buck guy I call him. And it's just a fire in his eyes of, hey, we can do this. We can go to a national championship and play for it. We just have to have everybody come back and it was awesome to see. It's right back child. It's going to be bad. Yeah, obviously it looks easier than it probably is. It's a lot of pressure and the difference between a good hold and a bad hold is one inch.
And then turning the laces, hopefully I don't do that too much. John's pretty good with these laces. So just about finding the spot and getting the tilt right. So I only like to think I do a pretty good job because you could ask Jayden. But yeah, it's sort of a very refined skill once you get good at it. Not too bad. I want to give you a bit of mistakes. The states have maybe just started two years. Yeah. There's a lot of cold for different suspects, but we're very exposed in Australia to American culture. So sort of you want to expect a little bit. We get all your TV shows. We will sport, you know, sports events over there. So it wasn't too bad. And I've been lucky that I should travel over America a bit before I moved here. So it's sort of new to expect. What are some of the bigger cultural ways you're in the back? Just the way people speak to each other, like joking around with each other. It's trying to be free to drive sometimes. And even though I go home and see my mate, so I say something that doesn't seem like a joke, but it is. So you're going to get used to that a little bit.
Yeah, it's the biggest ones I suppose. It's a little more sarcasm in Australia, saying. Yeah, a little bit more sarcasm. And the way we speak to each other is, like, the words we use for different things. I mean, I just need to have the last time, like, I was talking about gardening with Ronald mates, and we were talking about using a whipers in the back, which is a weed wacker. And like, just little things like that. You guys have no idea what I'm saying. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's exactly like, oh, this is, yeah, this is like a bunch of little words, I'd say, that, you know, I think in all of it, that I don't realise that he's actually Australian. I have to go back on it. Yeah, the guys are starting to learn. I hear that. One of the big things we, it's selective for the one. So you can't just sort of walk in, you have to try out. But most of the guys go up, playing Australian football, which the primary way to pass the ball is by planting it, essentially. It's a little bit different. But then we have a whole bunch of coaches that actually played a toy football,
and the Nathan Chapman played a few games at Green Bay. So he knows what to expect. He knows how to kick. And he still goes out and boots and he's old age, 45 or something. No, he, so yeah, and then they sort of, they teach exactly what to expect. They don't give you any false hope really. They say, you're going to go there. This is exactly what it's going to be like. So it's sort of like a one, two, three year simulation of what it's going to be like over here. So guys are ready to go. We're going to come. To culture. It depends. It depends how, hopefully you are, how a lot of it's mindset as well. So it's very, it's, you know, it's a unique off season. We might get two weeks, two weeks broken and we're into winter and then springing in the summer and then falling on season. So yeah. Two culture questions. One, have you ever had a Vegemite sandwich? Yeah, yeah. And two, I heard no real last story and we drink fast, respire. I've had my first foster in Nashville about two months ago. And? It's alright. It's fine. I won't be rushing back to it, but it's, it's easy. And Vegemite?
I love Vegemite. It's awesome. Yeah, I, I miss it a lot. I actually brought it over to Jarlos from Los Angeles in Australia. So yeah, I love my Vegemite sandwiches. Have you tried to share it with anybody other than Nick? I've tried, yeah. I mean, Nick doesn't mind it. I tried it with one of our previous case, you know, who's pretty upset when he tasted it. Yeah, it's some pretty good reactions out of the guys. But yeah, if you, you know, four to one ratio with butter on some toast, it's pretty nice. What's the biggest similarity between Australia and New York? Food. To be honest, the foods, the foods seem like, I mean, we, we're very multi-cultural country, it's America. I suppose we probably have more Asian influence, whereas America has more latin influence. That's probably the biggest food difference, but I mean, we have a whole bunch of Italian. We're from in Melbourne has one of the biggest great populations outside of Greece. I think it's the biggest out of Greece. Yeah, I mean, you could go either. You'd be, you'd be in the city, you'd be your art. Do you have to watch everywhere you stand? No, it's not that bad. Just every down there, you would sort of look up and it might be a spot there or something.
Like the size of your pet. Sometimes, I mean, there's a lot of daddy long legs, you know, these little ones with the big legs, but like you'll lean sick, so they're not sat around in corners. But it's not too bad. Joe, you got class. Thank you very much. Thanks, Joe. Is it different getting ready for it? Yeah, it's different. You know, I mean, you look at the last three games that we faced. Really, the offenses were different to what Notre Dame does well. So we have to make that adjustment because they'll be hard to handle. You know, you know, past rush lanes or everything and, you know, caging him because he is exceptional
at making those plays. But, you know, you also can execute a past rush unless you execute a past rush move. You know, so it's like you can't get a hit unless you swing the bat. So it's really going to be a constant balance and knowing that he can make those plays, everybody has to be aware of it. Thanks, Joe. Well, we always talk about limiting explosive plays, you know. Guys know that. They know that. We talk about, you know, all the standard things that defenses do.
But I think the expectation is important, you know, that from the jump, you know, I talked to them about chasing perfection, even though it's not possible, you know, that we have the talent to do that and we have to expect that from ourselves, that we're going to be as close to perfect as we can. Yeah, and I think you have veterans and guys who've been in the system and you spend a lot of time together and, you know, they start to understand how I think, which is really important, you know, when you know what the guy who's calling the defense is,
why he's calling it and how it works and, you know, because every call has strengths, but every call, every defense has weaknesses. So they just start to understand that the longer we're, longer we're around each other. Yeah, I mean, you can tweak things week to week in the game plan and they pick it up seamlessly, you know, and you can just go anywhere and other times you have to be careful, but when you have a veteran group that understands the system, it works well. Thank you.
Yeah, that's been a constant pursuit of perfection, you know, I want, I, and up to me to put them in the right call, get them in the right places and, well, when they make good plays that's on them, you know, and they know when they, if something goes wrong, it's on me. So I think it's that continually, you know, investing in them and trusting, trusting them and let them go play. Another thing, I would be a more serious last one in the club and it feels very hard to earn tens of guys. But keep working hard. Where did that come from for you? I grew up on the, on the mean streets of North Philly, that's why I came here. Yeah, it was raised by a Philly cop, so yeah, you know, there's an intensity that goes about that. You spend time around them and, you know, it's my job to be hard, hard on them in practice, you know, to be detailed and on top of my game and have all the answers and drive them and motivate them, you know.
Because on game day, that's not the time, that's the time for them to play. But that's my job during the week. My job during the week is to be the bad cop and let all the other guys be the good cop. Thank you. How much does it pressure? I mean, that's a ton of additional pressure. Yeah, I mean, that's a guy who can beat you with his feet or his arm and that changes everything about the game. I mean, it's a big deal. You know, Riley, he's really established his own mark and his own place because of his athletic skill, but his toughness. I mean, he's really, really a tough minded person and player.
Yeah, I think it did. I think it really did. You know, the sooner you can get back to playing, the sooner, you know, you can write a new script. You know, so I think that was a good thing for us. Definitely. It was a feel bad for a little bit and then we got to get back to work, you know. And anytime you can get back to work, it helps you get over those things. It's really a really serious pressure to win every game.
But if it does happen, that's the job as coaches is we have to find a way to get some benefit out of it, you know. And I feel like we did that. Thank you. I like the adjuster. That's why I named him the adjuster because he adjusts. Yes. What does being able to play in some of these different positions? Yeah, I think it allows all the things you talked about in terms of disguise. It gives coverage relief to the other guys.
I think he sees things, you know, even better from that position. You know, and so the results speak for themselves too. That's all theory until you get out there and do it. From the time we recruited him to, you know, yeah, I always knew that he could do that. And it was just a matter of getting to it as the best thing for the entire defense. Yeah, it hit us hard. I mean, we put a lot of time into it and, you know, thought we put our best foot forward. But that's why you don't overreact in those situations that, you know, give him his respect for his decision and his family and say, hey, if you ever need us, we're here because those things come around.
Absolutely, absolutely. Yeah, we're, you know, still using a lot of Oklahoma State film one way we're trying to recruit him. And another year gave us the opportunity to put more stuff on tape to show him. Yeah, he's a very serious student, you know, so it's almost like if he sees something when you're teaching, he's not going to say it right then. You know, he's one of those guys that'll come to you after class and, you know, like it and then bring it up. You know, but he's very serious about the flow of teaching and, you know, not interrupting, but he picks up on it.
He picks up on everything. You have to be on your toes. You know, I think what you said when Coach Day and Chip did was we experienced the benefits of that, right, because of less plays, you know, and shortening game. But defensively, you also said it. You really don't have a choice in the matter. You know, you get, it's, it's whatever the other team throws at you, you got to react to it. No, not me. I mean, we have that's Coach Day sets up the entire program to have all the nutrition people and the sports science and all that to do that.
I don't treat it any differently. Our job is defensive, you got one job, stop him. It's it. And then do it again in the next series. Yeah, I mean, there's luck involved. There's preparation. There's strength staff, nutrition, sports science, all that is a big deal. That's why we have great people who do it. And, and then you got to be fortunate. Yeah, I think it really started at Duke, be honest with you and it evolved. And you know, where Duke and you got great kids and maybe you're not quite as talented as your opponent sometimes.
You got to find ways to win. You know, so it allows you to be more creative and then you get to Oklahoma state and what you do at Duke doesn't work because the big 12 is different, you know, or was at the time, right? I mean, trying to score every play. So then you have to adapt to that. And then you get to a high state and, you know, you have the best players in the country. And that's an that's an adaption to right because you know, things that maybe you had to do in the past. You don't have to do anymore. So you look for different ways to get an edge. Yeah. Work, work and good kids, you know, put in the work, have the answers and then have good kids who want to be coached and listen. You know, it's really a big deal.
Work, same answer, it's work. Right? I mean, it's just you, you're working. But you have to study yourself. I think it's a big deal. You have to take accountability when something doesn't work. You know, we got to study all the ways that teams have beat you and have answers. But really, it's just a lot of study, a lot of time alone, a lot of work. I really try to take myself out of the equation. My job is to put the players in the right position to win and be successful and to serve the head coach. So, yeah, I mean, I would be thrilled for our players and for our head coach and realizing that a house state's a tough place. And you're right, we have had our ups and downs.
So, I would be thrilled for them to be able to come out on top. When he was there at a Virginia Tech and when he first came in, I remember going out spring workouts and he kind of just gave the vibe like he's a great dude. Like he really wanted to build connections with us. So, it's been amazing. It's been the biggest adjustment you've had to make since coming in on the last day. The biggest adjustment I would have to say is just really buying in to the coach. Because we're a big coach program. We keep the coach, and no matter what's going on, we are going to be the same way. So, just kind of buying in stuff like that. And you got to go to a couple of those bowl games and kind of see what that experience was like. What did that kind of do for you to help prepare you to do it yourself? It was crazy because there's my first time actually watching games from the field. So, I actually got to see steps. I got to see play call and I got to see coach Fry. I actually know those guys up on the sideline and actually forgot to talk that he's talking.
For freshmen offensive lineman, patience is required. It's a developmental mission. As a guy who comes from high school where you're playing a lot, how do you kind of reset coming in as an offensive lineman knowing it may be a year or two before you start to get real. You know, you kind of just want to learn from those guys that have been here because like you said, it's kind of tough coming in and being a young guy and then going against different fronts you might never seen before and talking different knowledge that you might not talk before. But for me, it's been kind of a learning process, but I'm picking up on it. I get very great coaching every day. And the older guys do a great job of communicating. So, it's kind of been really easy actually. I think that's a lot of different guys started last year. Like, what does that mean for this room in terms of you guys doing that for your play for any of you? So, how do you prepare for that? Just coming every day ready to work and coming with that mindset that we all need each other. It's not just one guy there's one guy that knows it's five guys out there.
They got to be able to trust their brother and the guys that are on the side, we got to be out there churning on our brothers. And when our names are called or whatever names call, you got to be able to step up. What more does that early on like right now for you trying to still your teammates can trust you? Just coming every day with the mindset that I'm here to work. Like I come in the building, I come in the wood and they know that I'm here to work. They know that I'm not here to play around. They know that I'm coming in the media to ask the questions. So, I figure I was going on picking the older guys brain, staying out the practice, either in getting extra work. You talked about this kind of scene improvement already. Where have you seen that the most in your games? I want to say knowing the game of football. That was the biggest improvement for me because coming out of high school is kind of a lot more simple. Coming to school plays like Ohio State, you got to know the start. And coach gives us a good look. I'm talking about Cusper.
The deepest of court, he gives great looks, different looks. Is that through film work that you've started to see that the most kind of the knowledge of the game going to set up on field? I want to say the film and on the field because you can work on it in the field. You can work on it in the world. But if you can't take it to the field, none of that really matters. Thank you. You can throw two of us in the world. We've got to start it all. What have you made of the quarterback? Three of them. Not too much. I feel like they all come in here working. I feel like everybody's making their throws, making their passes, everybody making their directions. When did you take away the last season? And you're the only one that's standing? Tell you again. When did you take away the last season? You got to take the ball and get it first. When the next game, that was it. When the next game, go out there outside of the day, beat the man in front of you, and then came out with a national championship and won a bench. The spring ball is about improvement, that's the thing that would you want to work on this first season?
I'm talking about everything I'm trying to get my game as well as my spice bar. I'm trying to come up to field it on. We hear about the leaders in the T-Rose not just for this really bad set of teams. You should get a step up who has started to step up and realize their place in the world. I feel like we've had leaders from last year that came back and I feel like we got new guys that stepped up into their roles and their roles and around the team. That would become a leader. Being a leader, you all always have to be vocal. You can have some examples on the field. Or you can be vocal, or do both. What is it like to have the same guy need more of the last couple of years to do that? I was happy for G.I.C. and I heard Grin and I said, I should grind and get in the extra work. The ball is ball. We come out here and play ball. He's out here doing a pro day yesterday. I just see him ready to make some real money. What place do you feel like you're a different player now going into this year, and maybe you were last year? I feel like every year I've just improved on my overall game. Blocking and catching, just as the wise people who used that were in.
But I feel like I'm just overall better. I came in here ready to go. How much does it push you when you're in a room of guys like Max and Will and Bennett that you know you've got to be on your game if you're going to get in the field? Man, I feel like Arya is sharp, but Arya are in every day. You come in and work and they go push me every day to work. It's just like I'm a do-go. It's not a crowded room. You got a mask first of winter, right? I love more, honestly. Max, Claire, Max LeBlanc, both of them. I love them. What's...you're flashed any time now? Is this the year where it all comes together? I feel like Arya was my year, but hey, you're going to see this year. I'm ready to come out here and put on a show for the Bug-Out Nation. I feel like everybody on the field is ready to go put on a show. We're trying to go back and back. You got to play quite a bit though last year, Tulane. What did you pick up from all of that, especially in a championship run? You know, and they were counting on you.
Honestly, just be ready at any time, honestly. You can be thrown in at any time, just like I was. I probably had some rest while I was just thrown in and you've got to get it done. If you don't get it done, they're going to find somebody who has to do it. I think we asked you this every time we get here. You've done it for five days. We're definitely seeing what you've progressed. It has a tight end, you know, the all of that means. I've been here even a year ago. I've been here over the spring and some of this, I feel like I've told them I've body a lot. I got stronger in the way we were. I've also got a little bit faster so I can get in and out of breaks a little bit. And just the mined part of the game. The middle part of the game, if you got even better at that, how would you describe that? I'll say it again. The mined part of the game, you know, that. Well, I feel like it's a lot more fun. I say the tight ends, we come here five o'clock every other day to do a walkthrough, more fun. We're just more students at a game now. We're a lot of things. Thanks, man.
You're welcome. What do you remember about that? I feel like it was just an exciting play. I was the last read on it. I will go out and I can't die with the kiss when I get the first down. You really feel like a lot more. Thank you. Do that when you're an national team, having a big role in winning the national team, which is that helping you forward? It's a lot of help. Kind of knowing that I can always turn the shit no matter how rocky it gets. And you'll make it through no matter how bad it gets because if you truly believe in yourself and you have good support around you and you can do anything. Look back on the regular season. What do you think was the sort of team that you were here with? I was going through a little bit of it. I ended up tearing up my other doctors and their clips. So I was playing through that. Didn't make it to easy trying to keep it in those games, but I did my best to help the team out.
When did you and your going to continue there? That was our week through. How hard is it to go out and do chicken ball in the nursing and locking the national team? To make a new kit, but you know what's the time? I wasn't really thinking about it, to be honest. I was like, I told my dad about this to my dad last week. It was like the quietest moment I've ever had in life because it was so loud and the moment was so big that I was so focused. And it was just like, I was in a full state. It almost took 46 years to get your back. Yeah. How much did that hit you? Still, still, still, still. Yeah, well, I've been doing it and practice is fun. It's great for mental, but until you see it going in the game, it's a completely different feeling. So that was huge for me. I know that was huge for Coach Danny too. How much to earn his trust back in games?
Through that. I feel like it's going to be easy to get your office trusted in the community. Yeah, you know, I would hope so, but you never know. It feels great for me knowing that he trusted me in that moment, even though I had the best past couple of games, even though practice is completely different for the game, to still put me out there and trust me to do my job. I was just happy I could come through. How much do you feel about hours? Really healthy right now. I feel great. This is probably the best I've felt in a year or nine months. It was rest and recovery stuff and therapy, physical therapy stuff like that. I'm just trying to get back to the first grade. If this is the best, like, something in the mile, what does it sound like? The contact sounds the same, but you can just tell it kind of what the ball flight. It goes a lot further. It feels a lot more pure cutting off my foot. How did you learn how to kick through that injury last year?
Trial and error. Which I guess would explain my existence this year last year. A little bit of just trial and error and what I could do. And so I think I finally figured out around organ of the playoffs and just kind of let it ride from there. So it would be the... How many people kind of had some time to reflect on last season? Did you kind of take away from those ups and downs, but maybe kind of change your process of all going into this year? Almost definitely. The process of me warming up has become a lot more in depth. And I go through multiple different stretches exercises, that sort of stuff. So I'm going to carry that along with me. I feel like it prepared me even better for the game. And also the mental aspect of it. Just for you and having confidence in yourself always and not on how much of the next season. Now we figured out how to move forward in the future. And you can carry 50 degrees in multiple ways. I just started to feel a lot more comfortable than I guess I would say. A lot of pressure that was coming towards me and from back this and the EDM, all that sort of stuff. It was all kind of compiling.
And I was like, I just kind of had to do something about it. So I figured it out. Whether it be the playoffs... It was my right. I was kicking it like... Yeah. Whether it be the playoffs or the playoffs success you had, the health you feel now, just how much mentally in terms of confidence do you feel like you've improved going into this season? I always had confidence myself. But the level that I'm at right now is probably ten times more than it was last year. Just purely because of showing myself I could do it. And then also showing Coach Day I could do it. Yeah, I just showed everyone that I could do it. What was your mindset with Coach Day sent you out there against Tennessee to kick the real long one at the end of the half? You know, you go out there and you think you're going to make them all. What were your thoughts? I kind of had to hit a perfect ball. And conditions weren't on my side that night, obviously. But you know, you're still expected to go out there and make the kick if you could put you out there. So I know I had to hit a good ball and just ended up having a good time with that night.
But yeah, it's kind of hit. Great, thank you very much. I'm Geno 2. I want to say thank you to Geno. The rest of my teammates, receivers, gave me open and a line doing their thing. And hopefully, you know, it's just the beginning. I want to be staying in this one because you're not a game coming up in a few days. Yeah, I mean, we're going to definitely look at it tomorrow. Go over it, fix our mistakes. And it's good that it's an early week, early week, Thursday game. So, you know, we will have to flesh it and move on. How did I get one of the state larger or before the game? It maybe hasn't been in the most productive season. What's he meant to you guys in terms of leadership and maybe helping the receiver like you? I mean, it means everything to this organization, how you carry themselves. Just everything he's done for this organization in the city. You know, he's a leader. And I appreciate him so much. You know, I feel like I'm in the best position possible, you know, having T-Lock and DK and all these other guys.
So, you know, T-Lock, he's a special guy. And I'm just just blessed to have his friendship and him be my teammate. How do you guys got back from this one, Jackson? Just, were you guys arrived and everything? When, you know, when, when next week and a week after that, you know, that's the best bounce back. Any else? Thank you. A year, you know, 100 total yards in the play-out game we lost, which I hate the most. It's not going to matter to me I want to win. But then, come back to the next year, hurt again. Like, 20 kills. So, two really unfortunate injuries. But, that's just a guy's plan. You know, and I think that the storm is now over, you know, and I do think that I'll be able to shine a light to the whole world. Are you concerned that you have that label of what you can't stand and think? I could care less. Because I do, I know this out there. Because as it should be, it should be.
I got hurt two major injuries back, not back to back years. So, I haven't been on the field as much as I should. That's true. That is true. But, it's not like I'm having these little, little, little dinky injuries and sitting out. It's something I can't control. Literally. So, that's why I'm not bothered by it. Like, yeah, I am injury-pone. You can say that, you know, but I do think that the chargers are getting a guy that's going to be healthy from now on, you know. And, you know, the guy will it and it's going to be great. And, I do think that it's going to be a great however many years here. When you've been on the field, you've been highly productive. Yeah. 5.8 yards of very average for your career. Like, knowing that when you're out there, you're very productive. How much confidence does that give you that really all you need is not what you need? All the confidence in the world, you know, the way I work. I want to say just from the numbers, but just the way I work, my work ethic, you know, and my relationship with Jesus is like, I have the most confidence when I step out there.
Because I do know like, if he grants me the health, it's over with. I don't think I'll be, you know, I think it'll be a great year or whatever, a couple of years. However many years he grants me great health, you know. And I think just the work ethic, my prayer, and all that stuff, that's what helps me have that confidence. With the numbers, we'll be there. They might be higher after this year, you know, and it's crazy to think about it. Because I had 6.6 yards per carry, you know, so we'll see. You listen to Paul, do you run him behind this line? Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I play with Bradley. I play with him, you know, I know Slater. I know all the guys, you know, and I'm excited. I think, like I said earlier, it's a talented group. You know, we just got to put it together and win some games, because that's what I came here for. Just an only part of the year or... I wouldn't say part of the recruitment, but like whenever I decided I was going to sign it, it was great to have him in the room. Yeah, we're great.
We have a great relationship. He's like my brother. He's on the job. I think it complements each other very well. You know, he can do a lot of stuff too. You know, a lot of people think he's just power, power, power, but I think he has some other parts we've gained too. It'll be great, because I feel like I could do everything. And when we wanted to get tired, we can roll it in. We can keep rolling. We win some games. When you, the two of you, you're going, how do you think this is going to look? The work will be that partnership that's back there. I know. That's a hard question. How do I think it'll look beautiful? You know, a lot of people call this a passive league, but I think you got to run the ball to win the Super Bowl. If you look at the teams who win the Super Bowl, they can run the ball. They can control the clock. And so if we're both good, it'll look great. Beautiful. How do you describe the Greg Rowan offense? I would describe it as, you know, a great offense.
I think he gives a quarter, he's going to give the quarterback a lot of options. He's going to give the running back a lot of options. He's going to give the receiver a lot of options. And I think it's going to be great. He's often going to be amazing. One thing we talked about, you know, is like why are you going to build something good for Russian offenses throughout your career? Which everywhere you've been. And you said that one part of it is just, you got to call the police. You got to call them out of the police. As a running back, you know, how much confidence, how much you've sat in this and give you a play collar that's going to stick with it and allow you and the offense wanted to get you a rid of the group. And he's going to give me a lot of excitement. You know, it's going to be, like I said, it's fun to play in his offense. And I think he does have some good things in the pass game too. But like you said, he sticks with the run and that's the identity. You want an offense that has an identity, right? You're going to be looking everywhere else to find your identity. You want to have it. And so I think his offense has that. And the guy he builds and puts in there, it complements that identity.
I think it's going to be great. You mentioned you're 100% now. So you'll be full-go for training. That's the expectation. Look, I ain't going to answer any of the four. If it's up to me? Yes. Look, because I had this problem like two years, three years ago. I'm thinking I'm full-go. I think I'm ready to go. And then next year, you know, I'm on PUP. Like, hey, look, some stuff above my pay-gray. So, but I don't know. Hopefully, I can start. I think I'm ready to start, you know, at the beginning of training camp. But that's not up to me as I've learned. How do your people... I wouldn't say that. I think I've been in some great organizations. And I think this organization is a great organization. And the training staff is great. And so they just want what's best for me, you know? And they're taking care of me, which that's what you want in an organization. And so that's where that comes from. Which I appreciate it.
Like, I really appreciate it. You know, because I'm a type of guy like I work really hard. So maybe sometime I'm blind to, you know, the danger of something, you know? So I appreciate it. But like I said, if it's up to me, yeah, I'm out there. But never know. Well, any frustration for you during the getting into the agency, you know, dealing with rehab and not having a full season of aid for the production to go out. There was already part of that where you were like, I wish I had hit the open market with a different situation. You know? Nah. I like it. I like... How would I say this? I like it the hard way. But, you know, I like it the hard way. I like it. I like trial and tribulations. So, I mean, the dice that I was given, the role was I was coming off a killer. And that was the Lord's plan.
So it was beauty in that. Like, I was comfortable. I was caught like there was multiple teams, you know? I wasn't like, I didn't have any other team. But I was comfortable in sitting back and just enjoying the process, letting myself get fully healed. So whenever that team, whoever I would, now as a chargers, is going to get the best me. You know? And I think people all around the league know that. Like, okay, this guy, okay. It's a high risk, high reward type thing, right? Not even a high risk, low risk because it's a business, right? So I got hurt last year. So not as much money that he's been throwing at. But I think everyone around the league knows that whenever I am on the field, the numbers don't lie. And so they know that. And a lot of teams will like, are here. You can, we give you this, but we want you to be healthy. So when I'm healthy, it's going to be great. The chance that I've been giving here, I'm so grateful. And I know that's going to be, they won't be, they won't regret it.
Are you the type of person that likes to hurt people wrong? You're trying to, a couple things like the high risk, high reward, injury from, you know, like, are you the type of person that really tries to hurt people wrong? No. I hear it. I see it. It's pretty cool. Like, you'll never see me unless I'm just like in a bad mood. You'll never see me like, oh, like, if I have a great game or a great year, like, I have this wonderful year, I ain't going to go back and, you know, like, yeah, yeah, what happened? I'm gonna go back and get a good one, because I don't care. Like, you're eventually see. I'm a guy that's really good. So, I ain't worry about that. But I'm proving myself right that I am one of the best in the league. Right? So, forget all the naysayers and people will talk about being injury-prone. Because whenever I have this great year, it's going to be forgotten, you know, too. Why give that energy? I'm just a little bit of a guy who changed the game a little bit.
Yeah, I was, you know, we just, with him, you know, he's a great guy. I mean, he was in my class. I remember seeing him on We Were At An Award Show, because I was a dope walker, a finalist. And I'm like, I've seen him play, but I didn't know he was that tall. Like, I didn't know he was like six, six. So when I first saw him, this was years ago in college. And I'm like, damn, this is pretty tall. Like, it's cool though. Like, I never really got to, I ain't going to lie. I thought it was going to be kind of, you know, nerdy. But he's cool, dude. Very laid back. No offense to him. You know. I think this defense will be placed in 18. And it was 19% of the time. That numbered a lot more this year. It's like 30 something percent. I mean, how does that change the way you're not lifting? But how does it change the way you're playing in the corner? When the guys maybe that are back in the center, they're trying to get home. Man, but what I can't tell you, I know like one of my individual
goals, like, I wanted to do. I wanted to get more picks. When you play, man, it's kind of hard to get more picks. So back, back is to the quarterback. No, especially like you plan to get scored by the air. Air literally is going to throw the ball at the back of your head. It was the worst day of the average break up. P-I, something like that. Like, man, it's just, it's just a hard, and it, way teams trying to skate months, like runaways. And they just run away from this, you know, it's definitely a lot harder to get picks, but this is one of those things where it's like, hey, we gotta stop our men from getting the catch in the ball. That's a tough one, I think. So when you add then, theoretically, someone like Hassan, who's going next to McDonald or on the other side of McDonald's, got, I think, second to vegan sax, who went in obviously, we all need to do this. Theoretically, like, you guys get that from playing now, you have been the perfect two, three or three years. Yeah. Is there anything when you guys step between lines, could you allow the team to go to the ball? It's getting a chance to go one of the best receivers on the league or someone who got the corners.
Besides him being a great player and me being a competitor, and wanting to help our teams win, you know, you know, you get great dude. Someone that I've seen a couple of times just around, and it's off season. And, you know, just the way your respect and opponent is playing your hard out doing your best to win your, to win your red. And, you know, I feel like that's the best thing for me and him. And I feel like that'll be exemplified on the weekend. Do you know how you feel about how you talk about it? You know, I feel like step one of being better, and, you know, playing the way you want to is being conscious and self-aware of what you did to put yourself in that position the week previous. So, then that's where it all started watching the film, and, you know, being intentional in practice. So, just catching up all with my body, doing those
happy things. I think I did a really good job at it this week, you know, it was confident that I felt all year, and now I'm just about going out there and making sure it turns out like the Sunday was confident and will. I would say, I don't think, report Garrett for the game, that after the judge had acquired the ball today, and the team had called the judge about it, and the referee gave me a trade on the judge said, you know, I'm not trading him with. Was that on your mind? Oh, I'm a human, I'm not hiding it. I don't know if you're a player, if you saw it or anything like that, I'll get a good weight on you. No, I wouldn't say, weight on me at all. I wouldn't think about it during the game. Yeah, well, not, you know, I'm not going to say that was the reason why I played better. Nothing, no, I wouldn't think about it. What was your takeaway from the body speech to receive the line of attention? Just that stuff like that is contagious, and it's something that, you know, we've, you know, you, this, this, all I know, so all you kind of get used to something, but the reality of it is, it's not okay, and we got to figure it out. And we got to figure out why we're not winning again.
We got all the time in the world, we got all the pieces. So why are we winning, when it matters? And then, you know, little things like that at up. And that was my takeaway from becoming from someone that's been part of great coaches, great teams, and it's a great player. And so, you know, when he talks, you're going to listen. So, I know we all, you know, heard him, and tried to go about it the right way, this practice week, and as far as having energy, and, you know, if you don't have that energy, figure it, so you make it so that, you know, it's contagious, and that was my, my kind of takeaway from that. I moved you all over the place, but I imagine what the bottom thing, with that, you can line up a little bit more in the slot. We've seen you be pretty ridiculous inside there. Is that a place that you feel at home? Is that something you would enjoy being in there more? Yeah, I mean, I don't mind being in slot. I don't mind being outside the truth of it is, you know, usually you get less of a, you know, a cover player in the slot.
You get to see the defense show itself in a little different view. You know, I suppose you're being on the outside and just by the center corner. So there's ways to get into your rod a little faster and just break down the coverage and find that zone in that hole. So I like it, and I feel like, if you're being the type of player I am, it's, you know, it can seem a little easier in the slot to break things down, I'll say, but, but, no, I like doing both of me. I ain't gonna figure that out. I like doing both of them when we being in slot, being in the slot, and, you know, vice versa. We're hearing the slot. Can you get quick wins that are right in the quarterbacks? You have that, I was being right in front of them. Is that an aspect of it that's positive when you're doing it right in front of them? You know, it's a good point. Maybe, maybe, yeah, maybe that is something that goes into it, but, you know, I think, really, but you gotta make some tough decisions in this lot of the slot on your other side of the field. Got those big, you know, the big backers and the stack monsters that you gotta do it a little more and that's what comes with it. But you are right in that sight line at the quarterback.
So, yeah. Do you remember the feeling walking out of the stadium after feeding these guys? Let's go and... Oh, yeah. It was right in pretty high right there. Yeah. You know, can you get back to that with a win something? Yeah, you know, you gotta start somewhere and this is who our next opponent is, so we gotta go out and do what we gotta do. Yeah, I mean, we wanna get on the street, we wanna get on, and if we're gonna do it, it starts this weekend. So, you know, we got the Patriots and we gotta, we gotta, you know, handle everything. I think about it. I believe the team of Raleigh is where it needs to be. You know, we have some adversity hit. As a team, we all would have said that we didn't respond the right way with the adversity. We had some people say some things throughout these past few weeks. We had people step up and have people,
you know, show ways not to do those things. So, I think we in the right spot, I think everybody's missing in the right spot physically. I think especially we are too, which is why it's important. Cause that's where it comes down to, where adversity hits you just wanna show me where they are. There's no magic potion to, you know, be on the touch ground, but still find back behind again. There's no magic potion to bend down the home ground but spot on that way to win it and to win it. There's just show me who you really are. I think it's not for us to, but for us to respond the right way with the adversity hit to the game, whether they open down there. And we have to be the same team no matter what. I think this weekend's gonna be the right time to show it. What did you think of the road news? Should I speak to you? I think it was just what everybody needed. You know, whether, whether he was talking to you or whether he wasn't. It was something I needed to say, you know, Brick talked to us, talked to the whole team a few days later about how it coming from him. You know, he hasn't been here at all.
He's on the band with us a week, playing one game with us and, you know, he felt and saw that, which is real. As a team, the core group, you know, we've been in this situation a lot of times and unfortunately, we came out on losing hands. So it can be easy to kind of fall in that trap of life. And here we go. But that's what I said, like about the adversity that we got to make. It could be okay to think like that, but how we're gonna change that. So when adversity hits again, you know it will, you know, what's gonna be our reaction. And I would respond the right way. And if you do respond the right way, we see a player, a teammate, a coach, not responding that way. So make sure we all get on the same page. So it coming from here was very good because everybody respects it. We have all the accolades in the world. It's definitely paid. But, you know, that's the person that has the man. So I think I was really good to come from them. Have you, you got in the sense that it's resonated or is that something you'll kind of see on Sunday? I mean, I hope he resonated. Right after he's finished speaking. But yeah, obviously we're gonna see this Sunday.
Because like I said, you know, the versus you're gonna come. You know, it would be nice to have a game like last time. But you know, you can't prepare for that. I just got to go out there and do our job. And when that moment comes, you know, let's respond the right way. Somebody look at that and say, he's gonna be the here for a few days. And then he likes to look at what makes him. Like an expert. Can you see how that's a bad response? So if that was the talking the locker room or around, then that would get weeded out real quick. Because that's not when the football is not, that's not been a teammate. That's not holding your own stuff accountable with that. You're thinking that way. And if you are thinking that way, it's probably what's talking to you. So hopefully that message whoever was in that locker and at the time was heard from top of bottom. And we can move move forward with that. What's been like seeing that go from, you know, he was only playing like he's been. He's on the players of the defense hand running show. Like how you've seen him handling that? I feel like he's handled with race.
He's been humble about it. And he's he's been vulnerable about it. You know, he's he's opened up. You know, he's you know, he was surprised just like everybody else was. So you know, it was really was a family effort to kind of, you know, cope with what happened. But obviously try to find a way to move forward. The right way and productively. Honestly really feel like he's just been alone. If Jesse meet him, like just all the way through because, you know, he just sent the same things we're hearing the defense of our own. You know, all the things he's preached to us these past few years that's made the defense what it is. You know, to make us fight this heart in the love regard. My heart is all that he's now just bringing it to bring it to everyone in here. So it's just been cool to see the office and especially teams. You know, here, those messages, you know, feel his passion. You know, here is speeches for the life of 40 games and watching him right there response. So he's been really. If you ever see him guy, like if you ever see video. Can you can playing? Oh, yeah, yeah, seem like a very tough line. Yeah, if you if you want to cross the line back with a mo hog,
there you know, he's crazy or he can hear it really hard. But yeah, as a kid, I definitely remember watching a coach very play. I remember his name. I remember space. I remember all that. So I respect him a lot as a person and obviously, you know, the ass in the former player and, you know, him playing with Patrick Willis. I believe Ronnie lot. I'm not mistaken. I was like his mentor was and I think coached him. Was in my correct. I don't think it was it was who was who was the. No, not Patrick Willis. He was the head coach for this. The Sanitary Sanitary. Sanitary. Sorry, cemetery. Also a bad old lot back as well. So he knows a lot of ball. He's seen a lot of ball has an old school mindset, which I love, which I'm that's who I am. So, you know, a lot of respect for the person for sure. You were teething about his black growing technique. Just black on the challenge flag. Oh, no, I just I just see that. I don't see. Who you think your deepest is played. I think it's better to say we haven't played through our standard.
You know, people getting saved. What's the reason then, but at the end of the day, we're the ones that cost the white lines. We're the ones that have to, you know, handle the adversity. We're the ones that have to step up when the time's good tough. So we got to challenge ourselves to, you know, get back to our standards, just, you know, having fun out there, just running around here and, you know, executing and turning over. So that's just what we have to do. Because it's going to take us to win football games. As far as Jeff, you talked about a toughness as player. He doesn't like Jeff. He doesn't like Jeff. Like all of us. Got a coach coach, Britt. Okay, click back there. Had the toughness as a player for what you saw and watched. How does that carry over to being a head coach? I think it's more, I think it's a massive, like his, his ability to take adversity where there's good a bad and turn it into something and, you know, make it work something fighting for. Like I said before, you know, him being vulnerable, him opening it up into the deep things.
Like the day him opening up to the whole team, telling his story, telling his why. Like that, that builds character, that builds trust and that, you know, that builds love and that builds the family. You know, that makes you want to go out there and play hard for. And that makes you want to go out there and feed his family. That makes you want to go out there, you know, do everything you can for. You know, for him as a, as a man of also as a coach, because, you know, he would do the same thing on the field. And if he could play, he would definitely be doing the same thing for us on the field. So I think that's just, just a respect there. He was jailing Mills. What have you seen from the Patriots offense so far with Drake May? Yeah. A guy who's, he's trying to put the ball in the air. You know, of course they are still trying to establish their run game. They got a good running back over there with, with Remind Jerry. But young, young quarterback, I said, is putting the ball in the air. And he's also, you know, he's getting those third and five, third and six. You know, he's converting those outsides with his leg as well. So we just have to be aware of that when he does want to take off scrambling and then those passing down situations, you know, covering down on those guys. As a former Patriot, like do you see similarities in the defense?
Or is it totally different without Belichek there? Yeah, definitely similarities. A lot of those guys were there when I was there. I mean, DC, who is the DC now? We call them DC Coventon. He was there. He was the D-line coach, of course, Mayo as well. So they are kind of running the same type of defense, little tweaks here and there, but for the most part the same. Is there extra meaning for you playing at Foxboro this weekend? I don't want to put a snap on that because at the end of the day, it's time to win regardless, whoever we are going against. When Sunday at 1 o'clock comes, you know, I'm pretty sure that I will be fired up and everybody will be able to tell. But as of right now, just trying to stay focused, trying to stay calm throughout this process and when Sunday comes, just let it rip. Where do you feel like you are with this defense after coming here and quickly being integrated? I think the coaching staff, coach Em, they're a really, really good job for me every morning.
One-on-one meetings, you know, detailing the playbook for me, throughout walkthroughs, the practice, like I said, meetings in the morning to the point where I feel like I pretty much got a good grasp of the defense. So how much more meat on the boners there for you? Like, what do you think your game plays well into this defense? Like, what matches well? I think just the difference in general, as to say, this to do a lot of communication, which I'm not afraid of. I've been a part of defense with, say, they have to do a lot of communication, say, they have to play man, we have to play in the middle, we have to blitz. So I think as far as that part, my versatility allows me to do a lot of that in this defense and I think it compliments me really well. Adding a guy like Hassan Radikin in the fold where you get some more pass rush juice to go along with Quinn and Will McDonald, what can that do for the secondary? Yeah. I mean, now, whether it's man opportunities or our zone opportunities, we're talking about being able to get the quarterback, have the ball get out this hand's quicker,
faster, and if not, you know, he's in trouble. You get a guy like Hassan where the slide may go to him now and you got a guy like Will, 101 and you know how that goes are, they make chip buff for those guys and now Quinn gets the 101 and you know how that goes as well. So I think those guys complimenting us in the back end, I think it's going to be really, really good for what's going forward. You didn't overlap with him and Philly, I don't believe, but obviously have teammates, has anyone just, either before this year or since reached out to you about what kind of player and teammate he is? Yeah, hard worker. Guys, I'm going to go out there and give it his all and I mean, that's all we can ask for him. You know, I know he has a big expectation for himself and we have big expectations for him, but at the end of the day, he goes out there, beats himself, plays full tilt to the whistle, whether it's 60 snap, 70 snap, whatever it may be, that's all we can ask for him. I know you've only been here for a little bit, but the standard of this defense usually is not to let up 37 points like in Pittsburgh. What has been the focus in the meeting rooms behind the scenes this week that's maybe a little more in the light than weeks past?
The detail and that detail comes one day at a time, one meeting at a time, one practice at a time. We of course were ready for Sunday, we wanted to get this nasty taste out of our mouth from last week, but at the end of the day, it's like I said, one day at a time, one practice at a time, one meeting at a time, and when Sunday gets here, you know, let the chips fall with it, mate. Awesome, Jaylen, appreciate the time. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. It's a little bit more serious about what it's going to be great, and it's wasting time on money, so I mean, do the probably not big three with the culture being incredibly important. Being around the coach on the day, well, it's kind of the things that you notice around him, just whether it's how he is, or just what your thought about him being around the environment. He's an incredibly detailed guy, and I got that for sure from a slightly watching film, and he broke down, just like some game film with me, and he also accomplished some of the guys that he's coaching the past that are similar to me. And you know, that was, he really just showed how good of a coach he is.
Getting no coach on the belt during this experience, what has that been like? It was good, he's a very passionate guy, and I mean, I love that. Like, a head coach should have that, and you can tell how much he cares about the guys about the program, about the psych, being dedicated, being driven to win, to succeed. What did they tell you about the opportunity here as far as meeting a player of your sort at a position on the offensive line? Well, I mean, they gave me a lift at the time, and I'll be a good fit, you know, coming in. But I was, I was a coach, no ball, stressed, you know. They lost it, all the great, all kinds of linemen in the portal that have lost the great skill, you'll say that, fill wise on now, be good fit when it comes to, just like what you guys do, what FSC does, and what a psych for people here. What's kind of the ultimate feeling now about FSC? I think it's a long-term experience, but then what's kind of the feeling about them? Yeah, it's, it's a, it's definitely a good feeling. It's great. I'm glad that I was actually able to come down here, because I mean,
Zoom calls, and phone calls are nice, but, you know, in person, it's a lot different. And this is, again, to know the staff, you're, again, to know Coach Herb, and to know Coach Noel, who's, it was a great experience, so for all. Who else have you checked out during this process? What are the schools? I've talked to some others, so I've talked to a, a house, say it in Iowa, and Ann, and really just, yeah, that's what we've been at. I've tried to keep it short, try to keep it sweet, and really need to be 200 bucks in schools. I mean, that's not the main priority, like, is, are you entering decision mode now, or do you intend to take some trips in your own January? Yeah, I'm done with this, when do you want to decide? Sometimes with the Christmas. But all good. For those of us who only see maybe highlights of you, what are kind of your strengths in the areas that you look at the improvement? So, shrink wise, I would say, probably just movement. I mean, I've been told by Coach Herb, you know, I would very well for a 300, 45 pound guy, I definitely bet so. If I ever done on film, it's like meant to get out of my stance
is a big thing for me, so big, and just being able to move people. But at the same time, also just being consistent and can't place any punch on a forward general to technique. I mean, if you're a big strong guy, then you can only do so much by when the hydrant technique. So, that's a big reason why I want to have a good, a good, a good official work of just to refine that technique to be precise in everything. That's kind of like what I'm looking for to improve. Off you go, man. I'm American. But I think it's a good start. Jump over a man, that's what you were ready to go. I definitely were ready to go. Yeah, I mean, just when you look at the schedule he asked for us and how he takes care of our body, you know, just the diligence and situation of football, Coach McCartney, man, he's a great coach. You see, by the day, just us being ready. And this week went opener and I'm excited to build on that.
I feel like I always feel good, not always, but I mean, this week one, this week one, something definitely fresh. But, you know, just got to continue to build on that and take care of my body and we want to be feeling good in December and January. Oh, it definitely felt great. You know, it was going to touch down, had a bunch of emotions. It kind of had to lay there and soak it all in. But, you know, it's glad to be back. Very time and front. And first I have two working starting today. I think those guys, you know, played their tell off day. They competed. I think we had a great plan and we went out and executed it. When you were sitting on a bench in between play, would you think about Mike's English defense and the way they put on their tie-in? Oh, wow. I mean, I think it was late in the second quarter
and I think they had like 30 yards, passing 30 yards, rushing down like many boys are out there playing. But, I mean, went against that defense offseason. You know how difficult it is to play them, to prepare for them. But, you know, they stepped up and answered a call. Thank you. Throughout the season, I know you had to rough it and you took during the game. But coming out of that, you still have to open the faith in him that he's going to play like, yes, the line shared season as opposed to maybe kind of the things that happened in that game. Yeah, absolutely. Well, as our quarterback, he's our leader. He didn't come here by accident. And you guys have seen the product. Things put out there on the field a week after week. So, you know, I don't necessarily think that he played bad in our last game. But, you know, moving away from that, we have full trust in him. He's putting together a great practice week and we're excited to see what he puts out there all Saturday and lead us. I'm going to have to go over to just a couple more. Stephen means, Clayton's not college.
It's a solid word. In your football life, when is the last time you think you have ever been disfreshed with how games play in the game plan? Of some, if that makes sense? I would say, you know, there's there's rarely a Saturday that I'm not frustrated, you know, I mean, we can be the team by semi-like I'm saying, but there's always a standard that I hold myself to. I hold my team as to and I hold my coaches to. So, that's kind of the standard around the building. So, we've all cultivated a really good culture here to where we're able to have tough conversations, hold each other accountable. Not only coaches to players, but players to coaches. So, there's always ways to improve. Any game Saturday, no matter if we win by 70 points or, you know, we lose by 70, we're always looking for ways to improve. So, yeah. You, Cardinal and Jeremiah, very good teamers, obviously. But you guys don't tend to have the personalities that sometimes even deport them to a very good receiver. Why? You know, I can't speak for those two,
but I know for myself, you know, I just look at my life and I look at the ways God has blessed me. And it's hard for me, you know, not to bow before him and be humble in those moments. So, I'm not really one to talk to him of smack. I'm going to go out there and do my job. And I'm going to do at a very high level, you know, all the things that go on my head. I never really share all the time. But at my core, deep down, I'm a very real and deep competitor. So, I think that I know when I'm capable of, I know the title of the caliber player I am. But there's no need to really bow-sider or anything like that. Just put on the field and do what you're capable of. And find a question. Jeremy Birmingham, the podcast. One of your former classmates here plays a tendency now during turning time. So, comments about Ohio Stadium and about the crowd in Columbus. Do you guys have, like, a message for Ohio Stadium or fans who are hearing that and being told that the stadium doesn't get loud
or that Arkansas, you know, what type of places would? Yeah, I mean, you know, knowing Buck on Nation, I don't think I have to do too much motivation. We're going to come out there Saturday and it's going to be an amazing environment. So, that's just the type of fans we have. I'm not going to feed too much into the stuff that Tennessee is saying. But we're really looking forward to this opportunity. We're glad that we're playing at home just to be in front of our home crowd and from our families. So, it's going to be an amazing environment. I'm excited. I do have one more step. The only 37.1. Yeah, you talked about the accountability on players to players, coaches to players. But can you elaborate a little bit more on how the players kept the coaches accountable? Yeah, I mean, we've had a, you know, tough conversations throughout the year. And coach challenge us in the ways. How can I get better and we give them feedback. So, it's not really any different than the way they criticize us. So, you know, I think it's important to be able for coaches to be able to handle what players have to say. Because it's an intern to make some better coaches, just like they're able to coach us. So, that's really just that relationship that we have. That we have is very special.
I think it's unique to our program. You agree that the people are right for thinking that those are tough and stupid that way? Or is it like a good, good, good, good, good. I mean, you can, I mean, you can tell you that anyway you want. We have the best running backfield in the entire nation. And we have the best receiver unit in the nation. So, we kind of, we're kind of jack of all trades. So, you've been moved around the office in the past of different things, motions, different trade and ways to get open. But has that increased any knowledge of intelligence here or is it kind of the same as it has been in the past? Probably stay away from talking about scheme stuff. So, yeah. What, what was it that Jeremiah did that you think enabled you to be in? I don't know, I got to. Just coming in every single day and competing. That's really what we're challenged to do as, as bug guys, when we walk into the way we're going to coach make you're supposed to be there and show up. And show out every single day. And you're not allowed to have a step back and not allowed to have an off day. He took, he took care of all his, you know, the non-negotiables of this program. He was never late.
He made his way every single day. He gave his 100% effort. And at the end of the day, he was just winning a lot of competitions and just grinding. So, yeah. I'm like, what do you like, what do you like? That's great. A lot about brand new. Hmm. What stood out to you, even when he wasn't on the field, is that making things like he could be a loser and back clifier. Well, yeah, first and foremost, he got voted on by his peers to the leadership committee on our team, which is a group of about, you know, 16 to 20 of our, of our guys who the team looks to as leaders. So obviously, you can see how people think of him on this team. They think highly of him. And he comes in every day as a very fiery competitive nature. And, you know, he puts in really hard work and days in and days out. So, even though he hasn't seen the field too much yet, we have no concern that when he does stuff onto the field, he's going to make a great impact. He's only been here a year. Yeah. I heard last summer about him. Like, Darn has now respect for his eyes.
He can be on the leadership committee. I have to check it for 3365 days. Yeah, just his ability to be able to, you know, talk a good game, but also back it up. Not in a sense of playing football, but more in a sense of, we're going to be the hardest working team on the field. We're going to go in day in, day out. I'm going to beat you even when I don't feel healthy, even when I don't feel good, all that type of stuff. It's all mentality. I'm not going to. From far away, it looks like. Violin, not just like that. I think it's kind of a little bit like young, very good. Right. You see that in him? I'm not trying to compare it to him. I'm going to pretend I'm wrong. You see that a little bit in the way that he can shift around? Yeah, he definitely is very fluid about the way he moves. And we see it in his, you know, his routes and his releases. So, you know, when all the White receivers are, you know, in the film room, and, you know, he's getting crapped. He's doing all this body movement stuff. It's like, okay, we could see he got a little sun to him. So it's just about bringing him along, you know, he wasn't, you know, he just got here. He's got a lot of tires. First year here, kind of built on the long.
There's steps you got to take, but he's definitely training in the right direction. And I think a lot of teams get talent for whatever reason you guys seem to develop the receivers better than anyone. What goes on out there that somehow helps Ohio State keep placing guys in the NFL? We play Denzel, Davidson, Ibn Olsen, Germain Matthews, Jordan Hancock, Layton Ransom, Caleb Downs. That's really what it is. It's a BIA getting this better every single day. It's tremendous credit to the defense and the ability to be able to develop corners like that. It's just good on good every single day. That's the way you get better. So I like to go with the call this. It's a good open. It's like a Samaritan. I mean, we definitely have a strong second there, I would say this year. But, you know, it's just, it's not just their talent that makes them special. It's their ability to go hard every single day. They show up every single day with a competitive nature. And, you know, we're going back and forth on the field every single day. They'll be bigger in it and spin that each other a little bit. It's all love at the end of the day. We appreciate them for getting this better. Let's question the method you do a lot of things this offense have.
You know, we're in and seeing that guy in the U.S. so much. Whether it move around, whether it's just be anything. You see kind of that same horse style build and Brandon is kind of something you do. Yeah, absolutely. Brandon, you know, he came up, played running back for a lot of his life, played a little quarterback here in the air. Now he's received very, he can do a lot of different things. So we just try to put him in a position where he can be the most successful in the position that makes him the most successful or just the ball on his hand. So we try to do that for him and a bunch of other guys in the program who thrive with that. All right, I'm going to go that. So right now he hasn't done any interceptions. So hopefully Russian coverage can work together so we can cause his first turn over the season. I know the guy, he's been a guy to pass that those lots of interceptions because he takes shots. I know he's even a throw the ball as far as he can in front of our crowd. So you got to do a good job of plastering them. To specifically the run game with the run defense was a lot better in the second half Sunday than the first half. Does anything really change there at all? All right, Greshan. You know, just to piggyback off that, we got to continue to be better. Personally for me, I don't like seeing the amount of yards on the board granted.
You know, we did win. But you know, I don't want to be the hindsight guy and forget about the run game. It's still, I think, an issue for us, it's an issue for me. We got to be better. I don't want to be one of the last teams in the league in a run game. So we're doing a good job. You know, our mindset is right. The coaches are emphasizing it and eventually he's going to get going. Obviously, you never want to have a teammate be treated away like your own. But with Ernest Jones coming in, he's highly touted. There's a pretty good run defense kind of linebacker. What does that do for your defensive room? Terrier, Terrier, my book. But it does it. It does a... I can't really speak on it because I don't really know Jones that well. I don't know his game. I've heard from others that I know that plays for the Rams. I said he was good. But as far as that, I don't know. Hopefully this move works out for the betterment. Obviously, I mean, we all want that too. But we'll see how it goes. I feel like a positive thing obviously when John Schneider and your coach are working to get an impact player on your team
and the NFC is kind of this wide open. It can be viewed as a positive or negative thing. It depends on what window you look through. What's that process like for you in terms of having to learn guys and their tendencies and communicate with the new players that are coming in during the middle of the season? It's a big process. It's definitely not easy to rework your roster in the middle of the season. They're going to do what they're going to do regardless. And obviously, I respect that. I'm forward. I believe in their system and what they want to do. But, you know, it's an adjustment for all of us to learn a new guy and kind of reestablish a new relationship and reestablish a new voice that you're going to hear and make it a cause in the middle of the field, especially, you know, because he's the quarterback of the defense. So it's just something you got to get adjusted to all of us. Playing at a different weight this season has that been any sort of an adjustment for you? It has been. Just getting comfortable with my body again and figuring out, you know, my strengths and weaknesses and how to make sure all my weaknesses are just completely strengths. So it's been a challenge in that aspect too. And I think I'm doing a good job by this so far. This past rush is going well.
How much of it is guys playing on each other? Like I'm thinking a boy is sack force from a two-year collapse of pocket and then he's able to get them. Yeah, you're all in a... I would say last game was probably the best game. Surprisingly, it was all working together as good as we did. I think these past couple of games prior before that game, it's been a lot of us just... We just went in and just happened to be like that. I feel like this Atlanta game was a good game of us communicating. The past game schemes, whether it's a game or just going straight where, a straight rush and just reading off each other. And we had to get better at that. It's only been a couple of games. We've only been seven games. We have a lot more football to play to get better and build our relationship on that aspect. If you dropped in covers as much as you thought you might have. Um, but on par. I've dropped a good amount of time so far this year. I'm talking about doing it now so she'll put me on whoever, not put me on George Kittle. No. Have you seen Derek Hall grow in the last... For my season this year, at the end of the year?
I mean, he's the same type of player. Honestly, only thing that's been different is his mindset and it's applying to the field. And he has to continue. You and the Oregon Fahas they game? I was. Yeah. Jackson had a duck jersey on the week after. Did you have something that you had to do as well? I had to do something that was a little more personal, but I didn't make that bet. But speaking of that, I don't know why we didn't run the ball in the last extension of the game. So talk to them boys down the Columbus and tell them to run the damn ball next time and just... Trust the kicker. But it's not good. Did you get the penalty, the intentional penalty late in the game? I don't know if that was on purpose. I think Mike brought that up to me and asked me, do you think it was on purpose or they did by accident? I don't know. But. I think it was intentional. If it was intentional, it was a very serious move. I didn't, I wouldn't expect that. So I was actually, you know, big brain played by him. Did you think there should have been a second left? No. I'm being real. I don't want to be biased. No, we ran out of time.
We just, my boy, my boy 18 was back there just too comfortable. But it's all good. He's going, they're going to learn. First game with Roe Robertson Harris. What were your impressions of him? I mean, it's like 68 and it's crazy. He's super, super strong. I've been watching him. I've been seeing this game from afar from a while. I shouldn't have been watching him. I've seen, I saw him in Chicago. I saw him in Jacksonville. You know, he just watched a lot of football and a lot of tapes. So eventually you just see guys. You pay attention to who they are. So, you know, it's been a unique process of just bringing them in. And he's picked up a defense pretty well. Very powerful guy. Virtually was well. And I think it's going to add a lot of, a lot of good plays to our defense here. So, you can do for the offensive lineman at arms that long. Shoot, can nobody touch your chest? You in the ball game. You don't want big strong lineman grabbing you and trying to rough out you. Because they're already bigger than us in the first place, especially me. They like 68, 330. And I'm wherever my weight is. So, playing with extensions is very key for D-Linda.
You know, I think that's cool. I think it's a lot better. I would say that he's got a lot of smog. And then he also write GB. I think he's about Calvin's intelligence, you know, where he's grown. Where specifically is it? The film room? Is it kind of picking up the playbook? Where have you seen that? The rain of a crab? I would say Calvin is gotten smarter just like his game knowledge. Like expecting like a different kind of routes and stuff like that. What did everything start to click for him? The last year was it in the soft season? When did you feel this company wanted to do that? I would say it in the spring. I started to get a lot more comfortable in our defense. We said you break up the past yesterday with the Jeremiah name. I'm sorry if you asked, but it was earlier. But what is like going up against him to you? It seems like you enjoy it. Yeah, I love it. He's tough. I like going against him a lot. He's really good. What have you improved in your game just from that, for example, those 101 matchups? This preseason or whatever.
You know how badly he disgave it. Jeremiah, he forces me to pay the back of it. If you don't pay the back against him, he'll go get it. Yeah. And you Dave sent it. How would you describe this defense now compared to this time a year ago from this standpoint of a confidence factor? You don't mean that you guys feel on the field? How would you describe it? It's different about it, I guess. I feel like everybody is a lot more smart than this area. Everybody's like... I would just say that we're going just smarter. Yeah, when you look up and late and ran some decided to come back and Caleb Downs transferred in. What did you feel about that? Did it just grow stronger in that one week span, two weeks span? You're still on up saying? I feel like. Those guys have played at that level. The level those guys have played at? Yeah, I would say that. Like... A downcoming and... What made him say he was coming back, Zell says he was coming back, it's just so light.
What would be a happy thing to do with it, Eddie? Thanks, man. Of course. You can really feel the defenders around you. Like I said, if you can see three or four people around you can't really do too much. Like I said, there's a lot more space with his offense, a lot more holes in the defense that you're trying to get the playmakers into. I'm excited to be able to work with that. You can't really do it as much in practice, you're not going to get hit, but more preseason and in the first couple of games, I'm excited to see what that looks like. Can you pick a bump, she's... Especially. I'm excited, man. Like I said, from jump, he's a special player. You don't really get that so many players like him that are so quick, so fast, at least speed, and I ain't got a run route, too. I'm excited to see what he does in the future, but I feel like that's the least they can do for him this year. How do you think he would get me on board another time? It's just speed, man. Speed, you can't teach speed at all.
Just having us on opposite sides, even playing on both sides. It's just speed down the field. You can run 15, 20 yards in breakers out breakers. And like I said, you're going to have to play two safes most of the time, or you can run the ball, you can get underneath your house. You know, it's going to be a great compliment to the offense, so I'm excited. Of course, you said you hope this new offense will put the playmaker in the decision to make place. What about you specifically, what's an area where you think you'll have more opportunity than this year game? It's a lot of areas that you can see to look at, to improve my game, but yards have the kisses to when I'm looking forward to just more opportunities with that, more space. Just to showcase my speed and my ability with the ball. So I'm excited to do that this year. Something that I really showcase the first two years, so I'm excited to be with the quick game element of it, just getting the ball in your hands. Yeah, quick game, play action, more over the middle routes.
It's a lot of different things that you can say that this guy's going to help that, but I got said I'm excited. How would you describe the team that's doing that? We're getting way better, man. I mean, it was our first year last year, so it was kind of up and down, but that's what it comes with the game of football. So we worked a lot this off season, OTAs, which was really good, and we got off to a good start these first two days at camp getting extra working, but that's going to come with time. So I'm not worried about that at all. We both competitors, we both want to be the best, so we got to do some to be good. Where do you kind of notice that difference? It's just like feeling on the route. What do you kind of notice now that it's year two that gets more nap, which I mean, like, there, for you and you, you just got to get your way. It's just like, it's more than that, man. It's in a fail, everybody, everybody's good. So we just got to know what each other is thinking, pre snap, post snap, coverage is where the ball's going to go. Just read, we'll read I am and in progression, everything goes along with that.
So just being on the same page, being like I said, chemistry is built with time. So just little stuff like that that turns into big things is going to be huge. You caught one from Spencer Routland at 8-2. What are your early impressions from? It's real talented. That's the first thing I've seen from him. His arm talent is out the charts. He's a real natural, natural feel out there. He's going to be real good. I want to see him in action, but from my first impression, he's going to be a real good player. It's going back to the machine that you talked about all the different stuff you should do. You think there's still a lot more there for that? Oh, yeah. He hasn't really, I think this is the first year of being receiver two or really receiver. In my opinion, we're both a receiver one. I just be able to move around, run real routes. Feel like it's going to be a huge advantage for the same. It's a special player and I can't wait to see him ball. I can't wait to see him get more opportunities.
You're going to see what he can do. My run real routes, you can get opportunities and all the run. Yeah, just getting more, you know, he hadn't really played too many plays in his first two years. He kind of just gets thrown in there when he's getting the ball or when he's a decoy or something like that. But he's actually being involved in the offense, always being in, even on run plays. I feel like he's going to be a huge advantage for him to get a feel for the game and be more natural out there. How far does the receiver like that should have been a shed kind of a, you know, think of him as a deep threat label and then so people just think of him as a deep threat. But he can do more hard, isn't to kind of shed that label or that perception like the world. I mean, that's what life everybody is trying to label somebody as one thing or two things. But I feel like you can showcase, I mean, that's not really who we are, you know what I'm saying. As he gets more opportunities as you can see, you can see he can do more and more. That's what anybody on the team. I'm excited, like I said, for his huge opportunity is going to get this year.
And it's going to be a big one for the Saints. Does this scheme ask for more blocking from the receivers? Is there more responsibility? Oh, yeah. If it's so. I mean, that's what I told you to. We both have to block. And I know we're not the biggest guys or the strongest. But like I said, we want to be on the field. We got to be on the field for the play action plays. All those things. So we both got to go block D-Lime and block linebackers. But that's what coming football. So we both got to take that next step in our game. Is that somewhere there's like a payoff? Like you guys are you for a lot from play action next time. Yeah, so it's going to be a huge payoff. Like I said, most of our office is based on play action. All the in-breakers, all the yards at the catch of a play. So we got to go in there block. And like I said, take that next step and be able to be grateful for our team. Like you're in here? Oh, yeah. So after I filled the weather out here, man, that's what I'm used to. I'm not using the war and it's out there trying to catch my breath.
It's a great opportunity for us. You're going to chance to see family and friends at all. So this is their football friend here. Not yet, but they're going to come by her soon. Appreciate you all. Thank you very much. Bro. How much is the content that you guys throw in yes, those BDs every day? And I'm sure not to sack them for the back. Yeah. That defense, that's what you do. What is that? It makes us better all over the field of weather. It's inside our outside. We got a great second there. We got Jordan, RGB, so German. So they're getting us better each and every day. We got the best DBs in the country. So I don't think there's going to be a game where we face better DBs than what we got here. Who's your favorite corner to go against? It depends on what type of day you have and stuff like that. If you know you to the boundary, you're going to get hands on one from our IGB. So you got to be ready in the zone. He's going to break. So you got to get in and out of your break with him real fast. Talk to more trash than zone.
No, one. You're going to feel one out there. You're going to hear him. You're going to feel them. So he make a play. You're going to feel them. Talk to more trash. You were Brandon Dennis. Brandon talks to more trash. But when you get me started, I can be a hothead. You just got to get me started. How do you think of the mile in this first game? He's going to be good. He got the wiggle. He can do it all. Once he just got here. So it's just a lot being thrown out of him and stuff like that. So when he relax, get the ropes up. He's going to be really good. What do you get here as a freshman? I ask Hart on the same thing. What's the easiest thing to pick up on right away? What's maybe the most difficult thing for you guys now going to develop? The easiest thing is to pick up on your own five by Brandon stuff like that. And the hardest thing is not getting in your head. Because we got great receivers all around. So you have a bad day and another guy having a great day. You just can't get down there yourself and lose confidence. You know what I am? How is the team? You refresh them. I actually use a lot of hands. What stands out the most people about? JJ's a dude. So he goes out.
He's going about his business like a dude. He makes the play. You're going to get too happy. You mess up. You don't get too mad about it. He's just going on like next play mentality. I don't know how hard it talks about. He can move around the entire field of slot. I would like it. What do you like about your own life? I like you can't really game plan for somebody like that. Because you go on the slot. You can expect one thing. But he's outside. You got to expect to hold another thing. Kojah was just talking to us about his leadership role behind the scenes. How have you seen that? You started specifically about showing Jeremiah kind of the way. But for you or for any of the guys, how has he been a leader in that role? Kojah has been good. He's been here longer than most of us. We're really unprepared to Kojah and stuff like that. So whenever we need help, we ask Kojah. He's a funny player. I think he probably won the funniest in the room. So when you look at him, he always can get a laugh. And he always going to pick us up whenever we're down. Who are your favorite receivers to watch in Mala J.A.? I like G5. I like my league neighborhood. He's ballin right now. I like the Vantalla, Justin, and Mar.
For people who are talking like a guy who's ready to pop off a little bit here, what are people going to see from Cardinal Tadeh in 2020? They go to the new play ball and talk about trash with it. I have two more questions. Which Chicago thing? Oh yeah, definitely. Which of us is going to see from Cardinal Tadeh? Yeah, it's Chicago. I'm playing Florida. I just went to school down there. Which of your best advice to Jeremiah at this point? Cardinal? I'll tell him play ball. Keep your head up. Keep your head up. I turn up and play ball. You're going higher up and you're going higher down. But it's live. You know, now that you still care and you still want to be a part of this, you know, just watch and practice. There's a couple of little things we're doing different. Whether I'm communicating with Dumbar or other people, you know. So here? That you're also talking with him. And you get him pointers during the off season. Just a constant communication. How do you see him grow as a person, you know, in part of how he's approaching things and how he's getting ready for this season. What is rookie?
You know, I think the thing with Keanu is he's more comfortable, you know. It's nice first time around the track. It's actually like you can catch his feet under him. You know, I always think when you're in your rookie season, you're going from bowl game. I don't even know what's going on to play in a bowl game. Sorry, Wisconsin. I don't even know. But, you know, personally, I just think when you go from bowl game to training for the combine, to, you know, rookie minicamp, OTAs, you know, many can, I mean, to train a can, the regular season. You really don't get a time to really catch yourself. You know, you understand some playbook now. You can be more vocal. You know, I think with my absence, the other guys' absence, you know. You need guys like that to step up and be ready for those opportunities. What's the surgery you had in your office? The same you had during the season. What was the more thorough, what was the... Just tightened down everything. You know, my left side, because I was over-compensating a little bit. But, you know, it was, it wasn't anything that lingers.
You know, I'll say this, a groin's not like an ACO. It's not like anything's ever going to get affected again. You know, you know, feeling good, able to do everything, squat and heavy, with power and speed. So, you know, it feels good to get after a gun. What do you think of what the team was able to accomplish? It's not easy in terms of bringing guys like Russ and... You know, I think they're all good acquisitions. But, you know, you never want to be known as a paper champ. So, I can't win the off season. I think the work gets done out here on the field. It's done in the classroom. It gets done training. You know, and then you see where you're at in training camp. And then you build on that. You know, I think we got the right guys in the building. It's just about putting a complete team on the field. Can't have typical isn't to separate the business part of the game and the actual football team. Oh, you know, you always want to... You always have to treat it like a business because, you know, one day it's going to end.
And that's a good job. It's not like in college where, you know, you got four years guarantee. Well, now you don't even know what that I am. I'm just going to have to put my hands on the draft and transfer portal. But, you know, you have to... I still have love for this game and I still work my tail off. And I still put everything into it. And that's not going to change. But you have to know what you bring to the team and what you value as. Can't be only going to be able to be out there with your teammates today emotionally. Great, you know. We got a new training staff and still learning the warm up. It's a little different. But, you know, I loved it. You know, just getting after it. Learning new guys, going through the same drills I've been doing by myself. I actually like having more people around because, like, kind of go stir crazy when it's just you and another guy, you're like, damn, I got to go back up for another rep already. And so, you know, it's nice to be up here and get a chance to be with my guys.
Can we confident and feel we'll get down into your emotion? Oh, I'm going to try to remain pretty neutral because I don't want to be to be the way. All I know is I want to be here. But we'll see what happens. It's my last year here. I've had a great career here, but I look forward to playing. And with that second surgery, you said at this time was on the left side, was the first time around on the right side? Right side during the season, left side. And that was just tightening down my core muscle. It wasn't the same as my ad doctor. You know, you can ask Dr. Bradley, Dr. Zuckerbron, who did the surgery as well. You know, if anything's going to help me and make me a lot stronger from here on up. I mean, you said you were training with another guy who have you? Tyson, I've been training with him for the last eight years.
We've always trained together. We've got a trainer up north, Charles Cole Haley, who's my guy. He trained a Heath Miller, Brett Kiesel, multitude of guys that I'll respect. And we've just been getting after him. Thank you guys historically, 35, they paid big contract. And that's held against you. I think there's not a lot of history behind it. But, you know, for me, I look as, I'm not looking to be like anybody else. You know, my game is different from everybody else in the sleep. You know, I like to think, you know, I can play the run in the pass. And that's where I'm different. You know, I remember last year Mike T. you just brought to my attention. You know, the thing that's really cool is you watch powerlifters. And, you know, my game's built on power and technique. And those guys go into their 40s. And so, you know, that's what kind of research I'm doing behind the scenes. But, you know, we'll see what happens.
There's not a lot of history, but I'm here to make history. And I'm here to, you know, win another Super Bowl there. And, you know, have a great season. Do you have a set goal for yourself or how many years you want to play in the NFL? Or do you just take things here right here? You know, it was tough answering that question right after the season. I will say this guys, I can't keep answering that question right after the season. That is not fair to the season that's not fair to my family. You know, but in my mind, I got three years. And I want to maximize them. I want to play at a high level. And I want to go deep into playoffs. And, you know, we got a good team. And I'm going to do my part to be ready for all those situations. You've been playing on practice in the New York Port of La Trove, or is it possible that you might hold in and force the news? I have not even thought that far. I've taken a day. Okay. You know, I told my agent and we talked about it. We were cool coming out here.
You know, I'll be here for many. And then I'll be there for training. I don't know what the work entails, but when we get there, we'll cross that bridge. Why couldn't you work? For a few more. Remain a stealer for three years. You know, there was a conversation between me, Omar and Mike T. And there's certain guys that are one-helma guys. You know, and I want to be one of those one-helma guys. And, you know, there's a hunger and desire there. But it doesn't mean just hanging it up and calling it a career. To me, I think, you know, I got more bullets to fire. And, you know, I'm excited to do that. What's the newbie you? Last one. You and Russell Wilson are going to be out there with, well, to pay men of the year. I saw Russ's on social media. But I have been at the chance to see it. I like the surprise happens when it happens.
It's cool to have another Walter Payton man of the year winner. You know, I think it's an honor to be there. And I'll say one thing. I won't be here. I'm just telling you guys so it's not a big deal. I won't be here because I have to do a Walter Payton man of the year thing on Thursday. So it's not like I'm skipping. But it's an honor to be with Russ. It's an honor of doing things in the community. Doing great work. The cool thing is, as much as we get honored and nominated for these things, the work doesn't stop. And I can see that with Russ's foundation, we had an event for our foundation. And my mom was quick to tell Russ, hey, we need the partners somehow. And I was like, mom, let's just enjoy the event. But it's really cool to be a part of a lead group. All right. Thank you. Chris, next season, kind of trying to push for a job.
Is that like a confidence booster for you? I mean, I'll say it was a confidence booster. One reason I'll say that because you get like good coaches who believe in you. And they give you the tools to go out there and just play with confidence. And you know, they're doubting those stuff. You got your teammates, you got your back. Like, my first play when I got up there at Tennessee, like when to sail, and to remain like, first thing they say is like, no, worry, just go out there and play with confidence. You know, you know the tools, this is usual tools. It's just go out there and make a play. And we're about to play coming to you. You know, we're just so time to show a job. You just do it. And then like, the same goes for you. Like, he gives me, he puts me in a position like at the drills we put in, the work you put in, the one on one, so I just go out there and just perform at the highest level. How much better are you right now than maybe last month at 4th grade right? I mean, I got way better just because I've transitioned a little bit to the inside. I'm like, now I'm actually just like catch, catch, take me again is. And often, cover is not always press at the line. So it's like, now I'm able to like move my feet, move my hands, like, see, like what I got to do just like just a case.
I got to go back in corner. I can, I plan, well, I'm not very confident out there. Do you think that that was an actual fifth of you or have you had the kind of convince yourself to transition to that? I mean, I feel like it's natural for me because I feel like me individually, I'm a fast learner, a fast learner, like coaches help us like learn fast. Like, because they're always honest about the techniques and stuff. So you like, you write down like you pick up all the things and then like when we get out here, they coach us to like the techniques always, you just go out there and play like fast spot. And it's been like, it would have like reversatility, you're able to go out there and just compete. Is that where you kind of stuck this spring or you've been kind of out there? So I've really been stuck there this spring a little bit right? Whenever you get into like other things, I just bounce out there every once in a while. Just like, I just have fun. See if I still got it every once in a while. So it's as good as going through the compete at most spots. You mentioned the technique, what technique, you know, tips and things that you had to pick up and learn from coach Walton from taking the insight. I mean, this is what I was like, he always, because what, coaches ask me hands, like see it, you see it, move your feet,
and then get your hands, put your hands on the mat. So it's like, when you get like, when you out there, you able to like process like the way the receiver come off the ball, looking at the hips and seeing like the way he moves. Are you able to pick up like the row concerts you can get out of that like so it's being like other coach walls for me. Like as a player and just like him breaking out football to you like one on one. It's like very beneficial. What was the hardest part of making that transition from outside inside? I really say like cornering, you got to cover two, you cover three, you cover one, it's easy. But then you got nickel, not so many responsibilities you got to see like the row concepts, you got to be able to process like diagnosed, rouse faster then what you got to do in a corner and just be able to like everything. Like you transition, you got to like, you got to move fast, you got to learn to move fast. It's like game recognition, where you think maybe you've run the balls since you got to, since you got to run to it. I would definitely say, I would definitely say yes because how you get to like college, just a little bit different. High school, you don't got to worry about things like that when you get to college in school like this, like your recognition of plays and like you'll know your jobs the way like the coverage is supposed to be played.
Understand all your teammates or pluses you have in the field. It's like it's easy. What have you heard out of the band? It's so far. He's very talented. He's a great dude. He's a humble guy. Great teammate. He's very supportive. He's like a guy that you don't want to rob because you can feed off of energy because you can see like when you make a play. He's like, he like IDB. He's like IDB 2.0. So he's like, when you get off there with guys like that with good energy, it makes you play a little bit harder. And then when you make a play, he's out there and like, it's helping you. Like, it's being out there with him. He's a good player. It's a big question. I know. It's a big question. I know. It's a big question. I know. It's a big question. I know. It's a big question. I know. It's a big question. Because you have so many kids come out of Glebville and just play at games. I mean, I mean schools and they like like tracks a big part of it because I mean to actually in a Glebville,
everybody got to run track like it's mandatory. You don't really get a choice. You're able to just like get out here and like know how to compete and then like G like getting bills and mental toughness into you. So like, have you like, I heard now you got to be mentally tough because I mean life. Life's not going to be easy. So it's like being out here, being able to compete. And when you down, just pick yourself back up. I mean, that's what he is down to me. That's what he is down to me. That's what he is down to. He's getting like he played a quarterback in high school too. And he hasn't made a transition to receive it at here in Austin. And this is helped me. It's going to be rough at first, but he has to push me to get me to where I need to be. When you think back and just like you're upbringing, you know, coming from, you know, Africa being over here, just what do you how did all you feel call of that kind of helped mold you into who you are now? Yeah, play is definitely maybe like tough and like not afraid of like new change. And he's like willing to just adapt to my environment. What was it like for you coming in here as a freshman and getting the SEVAS team go win an national championship for those first few weeks here?
Definitely was a high motivated, you know. Being a freshman, it wasn't really my team though. So like I didn't really get it. So that makes like push me like that once, when it's my turn. I got put in the word, I want the same position, but with a ring on my finger. What did you learn from those guys just about what you need to do to have a chance to go accomplish what they did? I say you've got to don't let the past like affect you like and just you got to be relentless. You got to be relentless, you got to put it to work. It's not easy at all by any means. It's got to be hard, but you have to do everything you do. What do you view as like the best attributes of your game that you're going to bring to this team? I would just say my size, my speed, I can take the top off the defense and I can play tough and physical. It's about that. What is the last year that you think back to the whole reward last year? What has the last kind of year been like for you as a player?
It was kind of cool and it was awesome to be able to come out and play with you. I was the last year that you were in the 12th. I was definitely chasing like, because I was always on my sophomore year. I was hurt and I got hurt during track. I was able to, I was a highly excluded athlete. And this time last year was like when my recruitment really picked up. And it's been crazy like must have another like give it just leave it to me. In my corner, my coach is empty. I just give it the motivation to go. That's a big good. Before I even got a hosting offer and before I even knew he was exactly actually through with them a couple of times in both. Bella Fatt, she's a chocolate. Yeah, I was working with, I knew it was at head coach and he invited me to come and run routes.
And I actually ran routes for a table in the fight. If we was exactly headed like, we first came to New York. We had a lot more, we got got together, hosted freshman class and he's strong. He's working on everything. He's definitely got nice on. This corner record of two years, I think, is pretty tough to come in as that. The quarterback? The quarterback. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And they're definitely childhooded. And they always say, I'm so happy to be on it. And they make it hard for you. And when you play this high level competition practice, you go on a game. It's easy to do the practice and he's really built on stuff. Is there going to be a moment in question? Oh wow, this is difficult. I guess like a one-off. I guess they're been kind of like a moment first. I realized. Oh wow, these guys are really good at this. Yeah, just like, I just first, like, on high school, I would just take some reps and see if we just go.
Yeah, I just had past speed and catching up with these, like, face separation. And I come to college and go, everybody's fast, everybody's big. So you get to find new ways to get open. It's really good for yourself to hire your IQ. And like, Coach Lauren, I said that you got to be who you are. Yeah, who that guy was, right? He's inside of being, but definitely that's what he was seeing. When did you feel like you've lost him last year? Or they could prove it count on you and stuff? I mean, you remember how you came along? I think it started in like fall camp just flashing. You didn't. I got to like the first games. We're in a wrong style. I'm just how I'm on. I'm just being great. I like it. I like it's personality. I like them all feeling. That's not so poor. Yeah. And the life backwards. What is there going to be any difference in responsibility and story? Use in this system? Or is it going to be in its own way? It's a kind of thing. Oh.
We just learn it right now. We just work it out. We just learn it yesterday. So what do you think about CJ Hanks and what he can do in his defense? I think CJ Hanks said what he could do in his defense? Or just what he can do this season. We can do this season. I think CJ will pop off this season for sure. I think this definitely got people in his year for sure. Got to. What do you think is the biggest difference between trying to be with Naphtar Shah and the future? To me it's no different. They both coach you and they both like they hard on you but they want you to be great. So I don't think there's no difference. You're talking about how you're working out what you guys do during fitness. Do you think jitters you want? So you're trying to plug into a device? No. No, I don't think so. What stands out to the coach that you know about the sun? Either on or off the layer or something.
I think Sunny is a great year. First before anything. Sunny is great here. I feel like he's like the voice. He can be thinking something. Sunny is just kidding. Wearing it out for the whole team I understand. So Sunny definitely a great year to be cool. You can film my channel tonight as a whole. You can leave it not just for a while. I bet for sure. Plus I think people are going to be better. I'm sorry. How does that show itself? Absolutely. You know what I'm saying? Of course. What is it? It's something that you need to talk about. On to my own field or when it's leadership. Whatever. Like I said, he's just a great leader. Like you vocal guy. Like you said, it shows up on the field too. So he's hard to follow up to a guy who says something don't own. And like maybe not on their stuff. So Sunny one of those guys who he's own his stuff. So when he leave everybody listen. It's obviously been long string of linebackers success of a high-reset. Say it again. Been a long string of linebackers success at a high-reset. And I need to look at you know guy like Sunny taking that next step this year.
How motivated are you going to be part of that linear to be one of the great linebackers to play at a high-reset? Oh, I'm ready for it. I mean, that's what I'm here for. I just know how to work. That's all I have to do. Just give him effort and just go on East day of day. I want to say this with full respect. When we see JJ and Sunny it's like that makes sense. When you're the third guy, were you surprised to be named? What puts you in that same category? Yeah, I was a little surprised. I kind of have feeling because like it kind of like, I mean I kind of could have guessed it. But like I just knew that I was one of my goal to talk to him behind Buckeye and I just put in the work that it was another thing. So what did you get in now? What did it mean? How did you say that? It was really special right after a text interference. They really knew what it meant until like the video came out and the question explained it to us. So then absolutely totally. Back then, it was playing a full-time Zen right bar in games.
Did you just detail the difficulties of going back and forth? Not just like when you were learning them, but actually having to play both of those five. Yeah, it's pretty difficult. Especially during the game, you have to put the whole mind around. It's a lot easier in practice because it's like in like seven down, but like going back to my game. It's pretty hard, but like in high school, it was every other player I was in back then, with the triple out. So I knew it. I knew it. I was comfortable with it. And sometimes I just take it. I'm walking to my room to my screen, which I had like, say it to be the same player. And I had to get a lot of time to get into the table and head. You bring in two packages and put them in the table. You can bring in a set of five or whatever. I'm just putting them in the table and setting them like that. I put them out of the table. You can try to keep them out of the table. Yeah, so like, I got to set the example. And then like, my first two weeks here I was like teaching them like, I don't know what they're expecting these players because I've seen some new place with them.
And they don't even need to be intense like, like technical ground keeps in technique. But it's just helping them out, because we need a lot of friends. What did you want to hear and do Nacht блatt go to them? It came close to the Springtime. They just want to have a good fight out, saying they don't play the best, So they won't accept it. They just don't like to cheating. They all have to do something honest. some of their grades. A lot of eyes, it's awesome because everyone's watching something. It's not like someone's only watching this place, so you know what's going on. I've got to feedback to you like after a play, after a practice, from all three off to all five. It's awesome. They tell you like everything, because they know like what's the last time I had with Coach Johnson and Coach Dinky's watching 11 and Coach O'Neill and Fields of What. So like, you really, you know what's going on, it's funny experience that you got at the big reps and the big games, all that helped with coming into the zone.
It really boosts my confidence and like, and I can like lead the young guys too, because I know it's going on because they really don't really miss this first time spring, so I like to do my stuff. So like just that leadership of them. Resultility has also been mentioned a lot. It's been all on both sides of the wall playing in different spots. You know, I rate on that. Yeah, this, yeah, I beat that question a lot more time. Can you just talk about the versatility that Coach Dinky's been talking a lot about that up, because I saw all of you guys in different spots being able to win? Yeah, so like, you all see it in last year, we lost two stars, all maybe started. So like, really guys need to stepped up and like, go in your season, I didn't know I was in the playing, I started left guard, and I didn't really know I was going to beat bounce over the right, and what a donny news and bounce out to tackle. So like, it really helps everyone. I think a lot of guys this season are playing more compositions and it's going to help us in the vocal. But if you learned from Donnie and Jogger, sat in all sorts of things.
Just like technique wise, they really helped me like, pretty snap stuff, and like, no one like was going to be like, I can play some stuff. Thank you. Thank you. Thanks for coming to the stack, another one. Nick, how do you manage your own expectations when you have 14 pressures, but you're not putting in the sack numbers that you'd like to get? I think just stay in the course and continuing to get better, which I think I've done. And then hopefully that day comes where the stats come, but I think I affected the game. A good amount last week, so that's good for the team. Nick, I'm sure you was in a Super Bowl where plenty of players you'd think about. And then Dan, the fun way, here we've done better there. But it comes with the fifth and one behind the run over time. Is that one particularly, or fourth one, so it's a guarantee you're going to stop them, but is that one particularly? Is that the ball to get over? Yeah, no, that's tough, especially because we have calls that could negate that.
And we just didn't really, like they ran in the zone read a few times, and we just didn't find an answer to it. But yeah, I mean, I definitely thought he was going to hold it or keep it, but I got to do my job, especially in a big moment like that. You can't go out of your job. But we definitely have a plan for the zone read this time, so hindsight's 2020. You're glad that that is your job, right? That was, yeah. Okay. But then you, like, mid-player kind of like. Did a shrug bring out a solid character? Yeah. And he even, he hinted at what should have happened. I mean, there's a couple of variables. I think the tight end came across, so that changes some things to the guys behind me. So I honestly don't know who it is, but I just tried to make it decisive for the guys.
Is the idea... Yeah, I mean, like any game that you played a team before you watched tape and learned from it. Does this often apply to the players to get kind of less, I guess, less in trouble for holding, or is it just depending on the player? Last year, for sure. Last year, they had two of the top penalized guys in the league. But it doesn't look too bad this year, but we'll see. Are there more refereeing crews that kind of let it go more than others? I mean, it seems different every week, so we'll see. Do you count your steps throughout the day? Is that why you use a scooter? Ah, that's kind of how it started. I don't count them, but I just take a little off the legs. Why not? It's a lot of walking from building to building. You've always been a team, having worked with your saw back, having to break them out. Good morale boost. Yeah, it's good to have them.
I don't know what to say to watch with this. Recent history has been changed even in the summer to have them again. What's it been like to go back and be looking at them? I'm sure you're out of there. What kind of trip do you have? I'd say. It's definitely a little emotional, but at this point, it's just a game. So we're just looking at the tape, trying to learn from it. A lot of similarities from last year. You knew guys, but really good defense and offense that obviously has 15 back there. So I'm always dangerous. You said it's a little emotional. Do you try to tap into those emotions? Or do you kind of want to just put the distractions to the side and treat it like another football game? Yeah, the latter. I'm on. Man, I try to prepare like him. I like that from him. He prepared when he prepared he intentional. So that's definitely something I try to do like him, but like you said, I'm leaving. So, but when it comes to preparing and being intentional with studying and how I prepare for practice,
I'm definitely taking that to it. Now, I'll Cody Lee, tell you a different type of person in here. Big sheets of film. Where's that come from? Just being honest, like you can't be more than those guys when they ask you what happened to you, trying to lie. And you get in the film room. It's obviously, obviously lying here. So it's the opposite. How much you got to prove what is it that you don't know something you have. I'm going to tell you what happened. So that's a good thing. Those big sheets of film and Cody, they're from a leadership standpoint. What has he taken out the door with it? Somebody's got a feel in that slot. I think he's definitely some big sheet of film. Cody was a great player, great leader. He's like with a quarterback and a defense. He's definitely some big sheet of film.
You got to be who you are. Yeah, he can't just be. Definitely got some seat. When did you feel like you lost him last year? They could truly count on you and stuff. I mean, you remember how he came along? I think it started in like fall camp just flashed. I got to like the first things. Wearing a wrong side, I was hung on. I'm almost being great. I like his personality. I feel nice and poor. Yeah, and the life backwards. What kind of is there going to be any difference with responsibility as we're in this system? Or is it going to be in the same place? Oh. We just learn it right now. We just work it out. We just learn it. What do you think about CJ Hicks and what he can do in this defense? I think CJ Hicks said what he could do in his defense. Or just what he can do this season. I think CJ will pop up this season for sure. I think this definitely going to be one of his years for sure.
Got to. What do you think is the biggest difference between French and New York and Georgia? To me, it's no different. They both coach you and they both like they hard on you, but they want you to be great. So I don't think there's no difference. I don't think so. I think Sonny is a great leader. If I was to follow anything Sonny is a great leader. I feel like he's like the voice. He can be thinking of Sonny as just a kid. I think it's just a kid. I think it's just a kid. I think it's just a kid. I think it's just a kid. I think it's just a kid. I think Sonny is just a kid. Worried about the whole team to understand so Sonny is definitely a great leader before anything. I think Sonny is a great leader.
How does that show itself? Obviously local. Yeah, I think. What is something that you need to talk about? On top of the whole field or what is leadership? I think I said he's just a great leader like you, you're a vocal guy. Like you said, it shows up on the field too. It's hard to follow up to a guy who says something don't own and they're not on their stuff. So it's not anybody else's guys who own his stuff. So when he leaves everybody listen. There's obviously been long string of linebacker success at Ohio State. You've been a long string of linebacker success at Ohio State. Now you look at Sonny taking that next step this year. What are you going to be part of that? You need to be one of the great linebackers to play at Ohio State. I'm ready for it. I mean, that's what I'm hopeful. I think you talked about early in the week of trying to balance out of not getting too high on your emotion. How does that motivation for you show up on an identity basis? More preparation, more film. What does that look like for you?
It's just really an edge in everything you do. I feel like carrying that kind of pissed off mentality. I mean obviously not letting it affect you in a negative way. Making it remind you, hey, I'm going to go the extra inch here. I'm going to see if I can find something extra on film late at night. I'm going to go over this sheet again. Oh, it plays one more time. All these little things that I just, we just can't let that what happened last time happened again. Earlier this week I was talking about how you played back here at Football. You tended to be playing in the Rose Bowl. You grew up in big 10th country. What does it mean to take part in this game? What does it mean to you when you kind of grow them up? It's a tell man. It's crazy that God has blessed me and put me in this position to be here and be the quarterback in the Rose Bowl. You know, a game that I grew up watching every single year. Some unbelievable games that I've watched in the Rose Bowl, some classics. And just to be a part of it is a blessing.
And I think we're all humbled to be here and we're all understanding of how unbelievable this opportunity is. And we're not taking it lightly because, you know, again, it's a business trip. And, you know, the only thing that we're looking at is, you know, we win this game, we go on a playing top bowl. So, you know, it's really exciting. It's, you know, crazy that we're here and that we're a part of this, but, you know, can't let it be too big. You know, we've got to go out there and play football. You know, I think so. I think, you know, you go back and watch the film and, you know, I just didn't. And I'm hypercritical in myself and I think we all are here. You know, but I just look at it and I'm like, man, I don't think anyone did sheer beat us. You know, I think we beat ourselves every time. And, you know, you watch and, you know, we had to turn over, you know, in our own 20-yard line. And they got the kick. And they were just two possession just going first half. And then, obviously, the way the game ended, like, and we're still one point away.
And that's what, what hurts, and it was a, you know, a hostile environment in their place. You know, I'm just, I'm just thankful that, you know, I said this, it was the other day, but I'm just thankful that we get there. Do you feel like, you're looking back to two weeks ago, you've been to Tennessee. You've been like, there's a conference about this game. They may be wanting to show the, you know, you're being put it all together. Yeah. Who does your sensor at T from that aspect? Does it feel a little bit different? Yeah, I think, you know, a game like that, you know, and stills confidence in you guys, because it shows us we're becoming a new people. But you can't be complacency. And it can never be comfortability. It has to be confidence and drive. And that's what it has to, it has to be just to be like, man, like, we can do this. Well, we play it our best, if it was anyone in the country that can hang with us, but we have to be on our game. We have to make sure that we can't let anything go back there. A lot of people take this last month. I'm happy. You're backing us about it. I feel like we can be a new people. And the motion of those offense rates that you get on the children.
What do you mean, what do you mean, what do you mean, what do you mean, what do you mean, what do you mean, what do you mean? I just, you know, at the end of the day, I just want to keep the ball moving down the field, you know, getting in a rhythm. I think it's going to be big for us. And I think we did a really good job at that in Tennessee game. We're weathering the storm a little bit early in the river. We're early calls that we got the belt. It's not in that game. And kept us going. But regardless, we kept the drive going. And for me, keeping us on schedule, taking care of the football and making sure that we can bird on third down in our situation. We do all that stuff. Obviously for me, you know, I want to be these guys and drive the machine because we got, when we're on our stuff, I mean, we're hard to stop. So we just got to make sure that we finish our preparation, right? These last few days and go out there and put our best reward. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, everyone. You come on this way. I'm talking about this, you know, just recently. I'm talking about how what I want to do for the world is I want to bring that home energy, the heat bra.
Right? So last year, of course, I'm sure you've been doing for years, but the year when I spent my own, he brought a lot of energy, excitement, happiness in the room, which is his natural energy, to where I only had to focus on me. You know, I didn't have to make sure other guys were, you know, feels the type of way when it came in here because hump brought that. You know, the hump's not here, but I saw when you did for a room, I want to be that guy that makes sure I was amptical to practice. Everybody's, we're taking a field team on period, you know, it's a low day, or something, you know, it's a disadvantage, but like, I want to make it feel like home comes. You're like, you have to pass the trip. I want to bring that, because that's what we did with each other. We were hiding each other, I was like, dude, it's probably going to be a walk. We're lit. So I want to do that. I want to bring that energy, I want to make bring more guys. You also do that. Yeah. I want to do that from day one, you know, I kind of, I want to do that from day one.
I want to come to him and obviously it's that time I spent, obviously, it's a before-odd day started. Just being in my self-just thinking about what the room needs, you know, because I know I knew we were all as one of leaders, you know, on our offense, is that we need a guy like that, just going to make sure the O-line is picked up. We're ready to go every day, those healthy, kind of little things are having a practice of people aren't saying anything, and how I believe maybe different than somebody else may believe, you know, like, that practice, at least, like, that need to be positivity, you know, I mean, so, but he, the energy I would be on, just, oh, I'd have to be on, so I was kind of, how I would be going on, really my whole life, all the year, I felt, team captain, like, specifically, and I felt I wasn't a captain in high school, wasn't a captain in college,
but I want to make a joke, I was in high school, so I feel like I'm not going to be a captain until I get that I felt. But that would be awesome, you know, but, you know, that happens, I'd be great, but not either way, I want to assume the world has a captain from the respect of the guys until the individual words, and get back to that point. Yeah, I mean, I can't say that, I mean, I guess the biggest thing is that I felt like I had felt, like, how you used to in the past, but it didn't take just the first day of the LTAs, it took training and left and right, once this season ended, because I know what was going to be the champion, so I took a lot of, you know, grips, just to give back to feeling, like myself, for the LTAs, and now, over the course of the week, but now, like, today specifically, just changing some small things with my feet, that is it, talking about the long coach, and some things I can do with my feet to get to that, to sell my traditional angle that I love to sit on,
and thought I felt great already, but I felt even better, so I need to work size a little more, now I'm getting my feet back, and how I like the right side, and on the left side, so long side. I mean, obviously, I feel like, in the league, whether I left the right, you're still going against Premier guys, obviously, you're high expectations for the left and right tackle, but definitely, like, the level of energy, and like, the expectations definitely take the human strength, because now, tonight, the blind side, that's the, that's the tackle world, you know, so, yeah, I would say, in terms of communication, as far as just, even outside of the facility, just stuff like that, like, really creating that, that tackle quarterback, bond even more often, feel like, because there's something that's even better, cool, I got the text one day, and I said, hey, I keep put it up, I was like, you know, I've been training both, I've been training both,
you know, I asked after the season, they're like, honestly, you know, we'll talk to you, so play the season, and I just got the text one, I'm telling you what happens with the free agency, then, so I was like, you know, what, I have an OCC right tackle, so, if I get the word, I'm going, I'm standing right tackle, and I did what I did before, I'm built on that, but I was like, I might as well as training a left tackle now, as if we're going to be left tackle, and I'd rather do that than training on right tackle, because I could go play a left tackle, I didn't switch my feet yet, you know what I mean, so, I'm like, let me just prepare an advance, I'll say, yeah, let's go, you know, I think occasionally, on third down, there would be a lot of twists, that was just not like, it's automatic, it's gone, and I think that was my mindset for like the first half of the season, like, I didn't have to go into the game with some pros, like, oh gosh, they did that, I kind of figured, okay, like, this is, this is the type of rush, I mean, again, this is how this guy usually rushes, if I get the vibe, this is how it begins, like, the rush, you know, tackles that, you know, first of your guys,
you got the premier patch on, already, you know, what it was going to be, already, you know, will be every stunt, and honestly, just knowing that's kind of an advantage to, so, you're not, you're not, oh, the problem's with my side again, it was never airing off with, but it comes out when I was like, three plays in a row, and in two minutes, I knew that, it wasn't going to happen, it's so loud, you know what I mean, I'm watching more everybody else, and he rarely, he only goes out there occasionally, or third down, I was like, you know, I was like, he's going to take me, you know what I mean, so, that effect, it's kind of, it's also kind of an advantage in a way, but it's also exciting, like, okay, I'm going to get the hardest to look, you know, so the real, real reps, you know, the day, so, really out on our way to kind of process, and I was like, hey, when I tell me, let me know about, I'm just going to train it, I was training all the left, so TAs, I guess if I didn't hear anything about TAs, I would've came in like, so, you know what I mean, because just like, I'm cool with training both,
I would've been cool with training both continually, but I feel like anybody, any position, I feel like, okay, like, you want as soon as possible, give your feet kind of settled in, your hips settled in, your hands, so then, certain kind of, what would've been harder to work both, or how to use? No, you know, but, they're definitely, but in terms of the development, they're definitely a lot faster, they're staying on one side, but I think having that, the weeks that we had to transition with seasons over, I'd like to respond, you know, look, I'm trying to get up, put up my phone, and I mean, week, things at a time right now, but when it comes back, I'm going to show them to the other house, so I just got a house to not too far from, so I told them, I got that house, so I could yell outside, like, DJ, you know what I mean, so, yeah. My mom said, you know, just go out there, my dad just dominated the person I was confronting me,
you know, just do what I've been doing for the last two to three weeks, I should say, but, you know, they play men on men, so I'm just ready for the challenge. I mean, feels good, just say somebody going out there and playing men on men, I guess Ohio State receivers, it's something crazy, but, you know, we just ready for the challenge, they said they're not changing their gameplay, but we gotta go out there and show them the reason why not to play men on men. I mean, I don't really, if I be on a cover, I be on a cover, it's not really a big deal to me, it definitely be a blessing for sure, just to be on a cover of a game, but, you know, it's not really a dream of mine, it's a dream of mine, but I don't really think too much of it. I mean, no, not yet, I probably hit me after this season, just, no,
playing in the Carlos Fubo player else as a freshman, playing in the Rose Bowl as a freshman, playing in the Cardin Bowl, not in the National Championship, I mean, it's a blessing for sure, but I haven't hit me yet. My favorite catch, I would say, we play Michigan State, the one I call over to defenders, definitely probably my favorite for sure, or you could go the one from Iowa, I should say, and the answer, probably them too, sure. I mean, I mean, like you said, it's pretty frustrating me having a game that I had in the Rose Bowl, and they're coming to the Cardin Bowl, you know, just doing different things, chasing their scheme up against me.
But I mean, like you said, whatever I could do to make the, I mean, help the team win, it's not really a big deal for me, and as long as we win, that's all I really care about, and it got us to the National Championship. Right here. It means a lot, we put a lot of work in this season, we have, how has we have loads, we have people cutting us out, but we hear now, we just ready to put on a show Monday. Oh yeah. First of all, the one that's National Championship because there was means a lot. I mean, you see everything that he's been through this year, people saying to be fired, this is not the third,
but I mean, you see everything that he's been through this year, I mean, I've seen everything that he's been through this year, I mean, I see everything, people saying my head on Twitter, I wasn't here, he first got the head coaching job, but I know this year for sure, we definitely got to win this for him. Oh, I mean, it's a lot, a lot of people in the league, I should say, I can't really say who, but I mean, you had guys like, oh, there, you had guys like, oh, there, you had Stephart Dicks. It means a lot of, my good Tom is Chris Carter, just a lot of, you know, guys I played in NFL and stuff like that, but yeah, really them guys for sure. No, just keep going, you got it, you've messed up for sure, really, I really appreciate that. Yeah, so they said.
Oh, like physical defense, like like you said, like people say, like they like to play man, they're not changing their scheme. So we're just ready for the challenge. Like you said, best defense, we probably go see all year and we just gotta be ready to go out there and Monday and just put on the show. I'm excited for will him first coming here in Ohio State January our first workout we have together. I mean, just everything that we built through this season. I mean, I'm just happy for will to put him in the business position right now, but we got to finish the job and that's the winning out of the, Monday. I mean, it's pretty funny.
Them saying that because I'm just only a freshman, but I mean, it's a blessing for sure people to even say that, but I got two, three more years left for college. And I'm just focused on college right now. I'm not really worried about the NFL right now. It's very special for me just being a freshman and playing the national stage, like a peer for national titles, something that I dreamed of as a very young kid. I'm just happy to be here and I just can't wait to put on some Monday for you guys. I mean, all of us, we were just sitting on the bench and we just seeing him hit the quarterback the ball come out and we all just got up and just started jumping up and down. We all decided happy for jacking that moment. And we just knew that that moment like, you know, this we're going to the daddy for sure.
I mean, it shows a lot of me going from high school or winning three state championships, I saw my mama down and then coming to Ohio State just appeared for national title right now. I mean, just so that I've picked two great schools, but I'm happy to be here and I just can't wait to put on some Monday. The coolest person. I mean, you got a lot. I can't really say just a specific person. You got a lot of great guys. We trying to lead like Odell. You have guys like Stefan digs. A lot of other players will just get cut off my mom, but really really into guys who show Odell a step on this. You're looking at another day. But something that you got on your mind. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, like they say, they play man. So I'm just ready for the challenge and just get ready to go out there Monday and just no put on the show.
Thank you. The vice genome had gave me. I just keep golfers. I know the reason why I'm here. I mean, like he said, just keep golfers and just no keep the main thing and the best corner I faced this year. I mean, I've faced a lot of great corners. I can't really say, but yeah, I've faced a great lot of great corners. I can't really put a name on it. I'm just like a teammate. I'm like a buddy. I'm a part of the kind of, uh, I'm loving it. What is your great vacation? My dream vacation is, uh, Thursday K-coats.
What are the words? What good are you? Yeah. Uh-huh. I say both respect and frustration as well. But I mean, I thought they come out there and trip to me and they say stick it to whatever door in our year and that's playing man coverage. And ready for the challenge. Uh, pretty good group. Christian, Gary 29 is a great corner. Uh, 15. Uh, the not more. Uh, two great guys are right there. Very physical, but you know, we all have to receive it. So we ready for the challenge.
Uh, I say just no understanding the defense, understanding the defense, understanding the game plan, understanding what coach Kelly is trying to get done. Um, I mean, just coming in, I felt I progress from our first game against Akron to now. I feel like I better each and every week. Um, me being slowed down a lot for me. Um, but yeah, really just no understanding. Devices and no understanding what they're trying to do to me for sure. Um, I'm two guys. Great part of the best we go see all year for sure. Um, two, two physical guys. Um, but you know, we're ready. We're ready for the challenge that they're coming with and that's the play man. Oh man. And you know, we ready to go on Monday. Uh, I mean, environment is pretty crazy. Uh, seeing all these cameras. Uh, certain I never thought I'd see them alive, but it's a blessing for sure. This is the main.
Um, we just had a prayer, prayer, uh, lead meeting and you know, we all, they all just, we all discussed the issues because they discussed issues. And you know, we just want the word, uh, I mean, not two and a half weeks. We had off before Tennessee game and we just came out there on Tennessee game and we played with a chip on a chip on our shoulder. Um, all throughout the playoffs, and we go continue to play with that chip on our shoulder in that championship on Monday. Uh, do you know how that very, uh, impactful, uh, got a very impact on my career, I should say, uh, you know, just going to his games. I was a very young kid, seven, eight years old, um, him playing West, he went to West Virginia and they played Clemson Orange Bull, Donna Miami. Um, he just go there. They're seeing his games.
It's like, yeah, I definitely want to play on the stage and I can't wait till I get to know that moment for sure. There are you. Uh, cause they really just in his own, his own love space, uh, he's just walking around trying to get his mind right trying to get his mind ready for the game. Um, but you know, he, uh, he just gave everybody hype in the locker room and just trying to get us ready to go to win the game. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. For sure. I mean, you, uh, you go play mangas Ohio State receivers. I mean, just be ready. Uh, cause, you know, we definitely go come out there and know, uh, give our best. I mean, they said not to change what they do. So we're just ready for the challenge. Uh, not a year later. Uh, definitely sometime in my career college, but not my first in college, I should say, um, just a bit of the being in the position right now.
I'm just a little bit of a blessing. Uh, just a little bit of care for Miami to be here. I won't take it for granted. I'm ready to go out there and give him a roll. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, I mean, I was watching that game against was a Georgia. I believe. Yeah. I was in a game. Uh, I was pretty sick myself because I was actually committed at that time. Um, so I mean, yeah, they left a bad testimony. Uh, but I mean, we ready to go out there Monday to redeem myself and just put a show Monday.
I mean, I just laugh. Um, but you know, that's what they do. They're not going to change what they do just because we're a higher state. So we've got to go out there and put it on. Why not to play? Uh, man, no, man. It gets us. So we just got to go out there and show them Monday. So. Yeah. Uh, my journey here at Ohio State, we're pairing a lot from that. Just going through everything that I've been through. Uh, my first guy here, all, uh, Matt Jules, all the hard workouts that we had, all the hard practices. Um, just preparing all of this for this moment. And I'm just ready to go out there and give it up my all on Monday. Okay. Okay. Yeah. We just squeezed this.
Yeah. 200. Me is big and strong. Yeah. Yeah. What's 20? Yeah. That's pretty good. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, one of the most is the one against Michigan State when I caught over two defenders on the, on the air saw.
Probably that one or the one after that. I should say or you go to one against Iowa. Probably them three probably my best ones for sure. Uh, I mean, just will put in a ball in my area and I just know how to make a play for them. Um, even though somebody was grabbing my face, I just know I still have to make a play because the ball touched my hand. So, I mean, just in the ball and the other thing, I have to make the play no matter how the ball comes at me. I have to a big game. Um, I mean, we really, they really feed us Chick-fil-A or piece out of the game. So it's really either Chick-fil-A or piece. So yeah, probably Chick-fil-A for sure.
Yeah. Uh, it went, it went pretty good. Everybody just uh, uh, speaking with their thing is uh, going right and what they think is wrong. Um, we just a lot of the older guys, what's in their opinions on what we need to do to uh, come together as a team. Um, but you know, that being definitely uh, helped us in a, in a big way because it helped us on the field as well. We played a great football right now and we just got to shoot out on Monday. Yeah, definitely got emotional. Uh, can't really say uh, what really was said because that's not players only and coaches only, but it was definitely some stuff said that um, people took uh, people took and uh, went with it and that's the reason we planned the way we planned right now. Uh, yeah, make help me a lot this year. Um, him being our older guy in the room. Um, me help me in cartenel as well and Brandon and it's in all the guys in our city room as well.
Me just a great guy as well. Very smart. Uh, me and make just been a big part of the reason that I'm having to see that I'm having a well because he's been a big, you know, older guy been there, been a lot of great guys in that room. Like Chris a lot of the guy was in Marvin Harrison Jr. Jackson, Nick, Jim, but so he's seen all the crazy I've been through there and me teaching us the right thing and the right way and the buck out way for sure. I love it. That means they don't know what's coming out of the next. We got 12 personnel. We got 11 personnel. You can throw two of us in the world. You gotta stop it all. What have you made of the quarterback? Three of them. Not too much. I feel like they all come in here working. I feel like everybody's making their goals, making their paths and everybody making their corrections. What did you take away from last season? When the next game, that was it. When the next game go out there on Saturday, beat the man in front of you and then came out with a national championship on the bench.
The strict laws about improving as a individual would work on this. I'm talking about everything I'm trying to do my game as well as playing spirit. I'm trying to come up and fit it on. We hear about either the key roles not just for this group, but for the whole team. You should get a step up who has started to step up and realize their place. I feel like we've had leaders from last year that came back. I feel like we got new guys that stepped up into their roles and their roles and around the team. That would become a leader. Being a leader, you always have to be vocal. You can have the same examples on the field. Or you can be vocal and do both. I was happy for Gia. I saw her grind and I saw her match. She was grinding and getting an extra work. We come out here and play ball. He's out here doing a pro day yesterday. I just see him ready to make some real money. Do you feel like you're a different player now going into this year? Maybe you were last year.
I feel like every year I've just improved on my overall game. Blocking and catching consists of wires. People used that word. But I feel like I'm just overall better. I came in here ready to go. How much does it push you when you're in a room with guys like Max and Will and Bennett that you know you've got to be on your game if you're going to get them a field? I feel like Arya is starting to hire every day. He comes in and they push me every day to work. It's just like I'm going to do them. I've got to ask this before. It's now a crowded group. You got Max for some work. I love more. I love Max. Max Claire. Max LeBlanc. Both of them. I love them. What's your flashed in the time you are? Is this the year or the outcome of the other half? I feel like Arya was my year. But you guys see this year I'm going to come out here and put on a show for the Bucket Nation. I feel like everybody on the field is going to put on a show. We're going to go back and back. You got to play quite a bit though last year, Tulane. What did you pick up from all of that especially in a championship run? You know they were counting on you.
I honestly just be ready at any time. You can be throwing at any time just like I was. I probably had some rest while I was just throwing at it. You got to get it done. If you don't get it done, they're going to find somebody who has to do it. I think we asked you this every time we get it. We're definitely seeing you rest as a tight end of all of that needs. I'm not even a year old. I'm not even a year old. I feel like I've told them I've got stronger in the way we were. I've also got a little bit faster so I can get into that break. And just the mind part of the game. The middle part of the game. If you got even better in the end, how would you describe that? The mind part of the game. I feel like it's a lot more fun. I say the tight ends, we come in here. Five o'clock every other day. We go walk through more fun. We're just more students at a game now. We're like that.
Thanks. I feel like it was just an exciting play. I was the last lead on it. I don't go out. I came down with the cast and we did the first down. You're, but I still had a great rookie year. Six yards of carry. You know, things like that. I think it was like nine touchdowns, ten including the playoffs. And so there's always been like, all right, you guys let me show my talent, shine a little bit like even when I had the knee. So I had the knee, right? A lot of people don't know like I didn't get hurt again whenever I got, you know, got cleaned up. So I went down in 21, right? Had the injuries in the knee injury and then came back later the next year. And I played the first few games and I just feel there was a lot of scar tissue in there. So I had to get it cleaned up. I didn't get hurt again. I could have played the whole year, but I got it cleaned up so I can feel like me.
And so after I got that cleaned up, I the first two games back from the injury, I had over 120 yards rushing. Right? And then went on, had great, great ending of the year. You know, 100 total yards in the play-all game we lost, which I hate the most. Stas don't matter me, I want to win. But then come back the next year, hurt again, like 20 kills. So two really unfortunate injuries, but that's just a guy's plan. You know, and I think that the storm is now over, you know, and I do think that I'll be able to shine a light to the whole world. Are you concerned that you have that label of guy you can't stand with him? I could care less because I do, I do, I know this out there. As it should be, it should be. I got hurt two major injuries back, not back to back years, but you know. So I haven't been on the field as much as I should. That's true. That is true, but it's not like I'm having these little, little dinky injuries and sitting out. It's something I can't control literally.
So that's why I'm not bothered by it. Like, yeah, I am injury-poly. You can say that, you know, but I do think that the chargers are getting a guy that's going to be healthy from now on, you know, God will it. And it's going to be great. And I do think that it's going to be a great however many years here. When you've been on the field, you've been highly productive 5.8 years of your very average career. Like knowing that when you're out there, you're very productive. How much confidence does that give you that really all you need is not what you need? All the confidence in the world, you know, the way I work. I want to say just from the numbers, but just the way I work, my work ethic, you know, and my relationship with Jesus is like, I have the most confidence when I step out there. Because I do know like if he grants me the health is over with is I don't think I'll be, you know, I think it'll be a great year or whatever couple of years however many years he grants me great help, you know, and I think just the work ethic, my prayer, and all that stuff. That's what help me have that confidence with the numbers will be there and they might be higher after this year.
You know, it's crazy to think about it because I had six point yards or six yards per carry, you know, so we'll see. Is it forward to running behind this line that they put together? Oh yeah. Yeah, I play with Bradley. I play with him, you know, I know Slater, I know all the guys, you know, and I'm excited. I think it's like I said earlier, it's a talented group. You know, we just got put together and win some games because that's what I came before. Justin, I want to say a part of the recruitment, but like whenever I decide I was going to sign it was great to have him in the room. Yeah, we're great. We have a great relationship. That's like my brother. I think it accomplished it complimented each other very well. You know, he can do a lot of stuff too. You know, a lot of people think he's just power power power, but I think he has some other parts we gain too, which it is. It'll be great because I feel like I could do everything and when we want to get tired, we can roll it in and keep rolling when some games.
When you the two of you are going, how do you think this is going to look? What will be that partnership back there? I know. That's a hard question. How do I think I think it will look beautiful? You know, a lot of people call this a passive league, but I think you got to run the ball to win a Super Bowl. You know, if you look at the team to win the Super Bowl, they can run the ball. They can control the clock. And so if we're both good, it will look great. Beautiful. I would describe it as a great offense. I think he gives a quarter. He's going to give the quarterback a lot of options. He's going to give the running back a lot of options. He's going to give the receiver a lot of options. You know, and I think it will be, I think it's going to be great. He's often going to be amazing. One thing we talked about is why I think we will build something good for us in our career. And you said that one part of it is just you got to call the police. You got to call the police.
As we're running back, you know, how much confidence, how much you say it is to give you a play collar that's going to stick with it and allow you and the opponents to run the team to a rhythm of the group. It gives me a lot of excitement. You know, it's going to be, like I say, it's fun to play these off things. You know, and I think he does have some good things in the past game too. But like you said, he sticks with the run and that's that's the identity. You want to offer us an identity, right? You're going to be looking everywhere else to find your identity. You want to have it. And so I think his office has that. And the guy he builds and puts in there, it complements that identity. So I think it's going to be great. You mentioned you're around a percent now. So you mean, Fogo or training? That's the expectation. Well, I ain't going to answer any of the four if it's up to me. Yes. Look, because I had this problem like three, two years, three years ago, I'm thinking I'm full. I think I'm ready to go. And then actually, you know, I'm on PUP. Hey, look, some stuff above my prairie, so. But I don't know. Hopefully I can start. I think I'm ready to start. You know, the beginning training camp, but that's not up to me as I've learned.
How do you how your people? I wouldn't say that. I think I've been, I've been in some great organizations, and I think this organization is a great organization. And the training staff is great. And so they just want what's best for me, you know, and they're, they're taking care of me, which that's what you want in the organization. That's where that comes from, which I appreciate it. Like I really appreciate it. You know, because I'm a type of guy like I work really hard. So maybe sometime I'm blind to, you know, the danger of something, you know, so I appreciate it. But like I said, it's up to me. Yeah, I'm out there, but never know. Well, any frustration for you during the getting into the agency, you know, dealing with rehab and not, you know, having a full season of hate for production to go out there. Is there any part of that where you're like, you know, have it with the market with a different situation. Yeah. I like it. I like how would I say this?
I like it the hard way, but not, you know, I like it the hard way. I like it. I like trial and tribulations. So, I mean, the dice that I was giving to roll was I was coming off a third Achilles. And that was, that was the Lord's plan. So it was beauty in that. Like I was comfortable. I was caught like there was multiple teams, you know. I wasn't, it wasn't like I didn't have any other team, but I was comfortable and sitting back and just enjoying the process, letting myself get fully healed. So whenever that team whoever I would sign with who now is the Chargers is going to get the best me, you know, and I think people all around the league know that like, okay, this guy, okay. It's a high risk, high reward type thing, right? Not even a high risk, low risk because you, it's a business, right? So I got hurt last year. So not as much money and he's be throwing that.
But I think everyone around the league knows that whenever I am on the field, the numbers don't lie. And so they know that and a lot of teams were like, all right, here, you can, we give you this, but we want you to be healthy. So when I'm healthy, it's going to be great. The chance that I've been giving here, I'm so grateful. And I know that's going to be, they won't be, they won't regret it. Are you the type of person that likes to do people wrong? Like you've done a couple things like the high risk, high reward, injury from, you know, like are you the type of person that really tries to do people wrong? No, I hear it. I see it. It's pretty cool. Like you'll never see me unless I'm just like in a bad mood. You never see me like, like if I have a great game or a great year, like I have this wonderful year, I ain't going to go back and, you're like, yeah, yeah, what happened? No, because I don't care. Like you're eventually see like I'm like, I'm a guy that's really good. So I ain't worry about that.
But I'm proving myself right that I am one of the best in the league. Right. So forget all the naysayers and people to talk about being injury prone. Because whenever I have this great year, it's going to be forgotten. You know, too. Why give that energy? Yeah, I was, you know, we just with him, you know, he's a great guy. I mean, he was in my class. I remember seeing him and we were at an award show because I was a dog walker or a finalist. And I'm like, I've seen him play, but I didn't know he was that tall. Like I didn't know he was like six. So when I first saw him, this was years ago in college. And this is pretty tall. Like, it's cool though. Like I like I never really got to I don't know. I thought it would be kind of, you know, you know, nerdy. They're ways. He's cool to really. But no, face to him. It's just because like the last three years, it's been disappointed at the end of the season. So I feel like we put more work in.
I feel like that's what we're missing. We're just putting more work in. And you just got to do that throughout the summer. The spring fall and then you've got to show it on the field. Tell the guy just asked you. When you take a. Still like in a moment, you're a practice. You look at it. Who all is on the deep. It's. And you look at the person L chains with bail coming in with. Sonny going up in the postural line. It's from it. With all the guys in the kitchen coming back. What's your like. Just view of what's out there on defense and how it may be allowed you to do some things. It's kind of just like. I don't want to like. High part has too much. But I kind of look like a legendary defense kind of. I feel like we got playmakers everywhere and then moving Sunday down. I think that's a great move for him. You know, he's a big athletic dude. He can play in the box. He can play like safety thing that's just showing how like versatile he is. And Caleb, you know, he's using Caleb how he plays. He's an animal. He's on the sophomore, I think. And I feel like the guys we brought back, you know, we all can. We're all dominant.
So for like as a collective unit, we're going to be like unstoppable. So confident is a problem. No. Well, there's a part of that too. And as I mentioned, they're about pacing themselves. If you if there's that much self belief, then there's also that part of going to build depth. You know, in case you have interest, case you have issues. So how do you look at spring in terms of getting guys that are next in line as prepared to keep that standard high? I think you just got a set a great example for the young guys. And just showing them how to how to practice how to like watch them, how to take care of their body. Because those are the things you're going to need to like go on this deep run. I think it's like 17 games or something that we're not. We add in games. So the young guys are going to have to play. We can't just play fit the games to snap. That's not going to happen. So. Oh, you did. How do you get to a 70 or 80? He's got to keep working. Kind of keep running. Get in the shape. You played so many. You know what's kind of surprised me that you said that you said that it was joke.
I'm sure it's surprising to hear that. It's a really hummus after you play last year. Did that kind of take it to a new last year? Do you think that you need to push it even further getting better shapes so you can play all 16 17 games? Yeah, definitely. I got to get way better shape than I've been. I feel like it was kind of like it was a joke. Of course, I needed those snaps because the years before I wasn't really playing as much. So I just wanted to get like more experience under my belt. So I can bring younger guys with me because I've been going on. One of those younger guys, we're seeing it out here. It's the first time I've heard all your last years. What have you seen from Will? I've kind of felt like last year we all forgot about it because he was hurt. Now he's running almost a second man up behind you and Ty. What have you seen from that? Will is a workhorse. He's going to stay quiet. He's going to work hard. That's what I love about him. He focuses. He don't really talk much. He's going to get the job done. Do a job right. He rarely has any mistakes.
What would be a successful single? A national championship? A ring? When? All the games we don't want to lose anything. We have a mindset that we can't beat. We just have to go show it. That mindset is different. It seems like you guys expect a national championship every year. This year even more so. You guys have all come back for this. You guys have all decided like an up and down. Does that feel different? Or is it not really any difference? It's just the same work. It's definitely a difference. Everyone working harder. We noticed our last run. Most of us don't have any years after this. We have to go bigger, go home and we're not trying to go home. Finish big. We know what you guys think of Michigan. But when you look at what they did, they won the national championship. And you guys took them down to the final minute. You know what I mean? You were right there. Something goes a little different. You guys could have won that game against them. Does that tell you anything about like that? Hey, you guys want to win a national championship. But you played to the 59th minute with the team that won the national championship last year.
You're that close. So I'm saying we just like work harder. That's kind of a coach makes a saying, you know, nobody cares. Work harder. Like those, you know, won't play Georgia. It's the same thing. Last, last play, you know, they went on the win in 90s. So we just got to get over that hump at the end of the season. I think we'll be fine. How frustrating is that? You're that close against the last two national titles. Of course, it's frustrating. But you can't change the outcome. You can't really dwell on it. You just got to, you know, come back and work harder. Do things better than you did last year and hopefully the outcome will change. Is that as you get older, you kind of learn. I thought that was working hard and then you always find out there's a little more than you could have been doing. Yeah, definitely. I mean, that's how that's what growing up is basically in college. And I thought, first of all, here I was working as hard as I could. But now I look back at it. I really wasn't working hard at all, compared to what I'm doing now. So just to learn anything. The stamina is a 16. And the answer to what do you need it to be to be your best? Uh, it is a 75.
80, 85. I mean, I can, it's all on me. I just, I think it's a little higher. I was just trying to be funny, but I mean, it's all on me. I just got to run harder. Get the shape. But the idea of a potentially 16 or 17 years. I think I'm talking about the idea of making this about, can you last that long? I think, I think we, I definitely can last. I was just, you know, we got to get the young guys to come along with us. We can't play 50 snaps of game. That's just too much on our bodies. Just everybody. Like online, D line, we got to get those younger guys to play, you know, get that pieces on the D line and the online and everywhere else. So we can last that long. I don't know if anyone has really expected that next time. Yeah, I did, unless we were like winning by like a lot. I thought like, there are no mom's, you know, I can go sit down or something.
But we're playing them big games like, you know, Notre Dame too or North, those kind of games. Of course, I want to be, because I know I can contribute. And I won't want to put that on anyone else when I know I can get the job done. Well, stand still about trading McDonald and see you guys again. Yeah, definitely. K-MAC is a K-MAC animal. You haven't really seen it yet, but in practice, he shows all the time. He's just, he's growing right now. He has to work, I think. He just has to get, you know, in the playbook, things like that. You guys are about the exact same size. Listen, you're both listening to six or your three 27. He's three 26. Yeah, I kind of look at him like my junior, but you know, K-MAC, he's going to be a great player. He's just got to develop more and getting the playbook. So really a lot on you older guys. There's that large group of young guys and then there's the seniors in the back. Is that part of your task for this year to bring those guys along as well? Yeah, definitely. We've got to be leaders. Like I said, we've got to have them play this year. We can't just play all the snaps. They got to get in there and get some work. And we've got to get them right, burn the offseason, so they can play.
And not just play, they want to like contribute, like make plays, tackle the sex. Let's stay together. It seems like these guys get bigger. Each one of the freshmen class is bigger or bigger. And those guys kind of, it doesn't kind of allow you in a solid person. Yeah, they're definitely some big dudes. And they all work hard. I've only seen much of some lead day two, and I'm not a bad one. But throughout the workouts, they've been working hard. You know, they're determined. I just say that. And it looks like they're ready to work with me. How important this notes is. It feels like, you know, there's a lot of great deep fances that you've got. You have big athletic defensive tackles who can eat up space, but also move, you know, right? That is that. Is that important, maybe, through great defense to have guys like you that have some fault, but also a great feature? I think that is definitely. I think if you look at the last couple of national championship winners, like Team up North, they got two good, two athletic detacles. Look at Georgia, two athletic detacles.
I think that's definitely neat if you want to go on that big run and beat those big teams. If you think about that, they're going to fight by the defense with athletes. Like, what's Georgia's Jordan Davis and Janet Carter? Let's miss you again. It's Chris Jenkins. Couple more questions. Do you know how, I mean, you understand because you play it, but I feel like sometimes I don't know. Are people realizing how important defense tackles are? A little bit more than they used to? I think so. I think they're starting to develop more and more of these like freakiest detacles. Yeah. Like in the combine, just now, you see in like those guys, they're moving, we're in the 478s and things like that. So we'll see. And when you think about the freakish attack on defense attack, how do you think you fit into that mold of that kind of player? You watch that and say, yeah, that's me. Yeah, definitely. I think I'm top notch when it comes to detacles, but I don't want to, you know, get a big head, but you know, watch it come on. I watch it do the drills. I have Tate's here. You're like, you're looking like my film. So I think I'm up there with all those guys.
I think you're going to be become like a artist who comes to the band of guys. The thing your way is, everything. I mean, you're going to break practice. You're not doing as much a weapon on the weapon. That's stressful. How do you work on that? Do you have like a goal? I don't remember how many you have last year. You have a goal on my 305. How many do you want to have? I mean, as many as I can have, I think I have more than that, but I think they're counseling. I think they're counseling some of them. And some of them were like, just listed. So, but I think we work on drills matching the hand. I think that's, uh, goes big. And, uh, what we do is a D line, you know, just affecting the quarterback is, anyway you can. It's just great for the defense, you know, just that little thing covering his eye, you know, he might throw it. A little bit to the left to our players. So, it's something that you really, really have to work on. It's a very different that what you can do. It's a very different experience. It's one of the things that you can maybe work on the most. You can bring your time here because there are a few guys that I've seen. Like, oh, that pass through, we don't have to ask. We kind of, kind of, kind of expect it for the people.
I think I just have like a, like, a eye for the ball kind of, I kind of just look at the quarterback and just, I see him, I load up. I just try to get in his way. And sometimes he just throws it to me. I don't know. I'm irritated if you like to be on high state quarterbacks. I mean, they get frustrated by, you know, we're a team, you know, we're just getting better. Yeah. Big time to grow, you know, you don't have to have the, the pig mentality of problem of, of instant gratification, you know, you can develop and grow. So, and sometimes you may be behind a guy that's a really good player. There's nothing wrong with developing and growing and playing when your time is right. And if the time is right right now, the freshman, like, what's your main? Did you play early, you know? So we try to also sell that, you know, we care about him as people and try to prepare you for life after football. So it's bigger than just football. We're going to prepare you for life, whether it's the NFL or on with a regular career in the workforce. We want you to prepare you as a young man and we try to sell that and preach that to the parents.
With remain having that, in fact, you mentioned, holding all these different spots. Do you anticipate, you know, there wasn't a lot of rotation among the cornerbacks last year when everyone was healthy? Do you anticipate maybe growing him through the rest guys here with the longer season potentially? Yeah, we play it by ear. You know what I mean? We see how goals by time we get in the camp, but, you know, obviously, he's earning his stripes. So, you know what I mean? When you earn your stripes, you know, a lot of jobs to create opportunities for you. You know what I mean? We have to see how it goes with all the other stuff. You know, once we get closer to the season, and we're getting the game plan stuff, but he's doing a great job and he's taking a great step forward. Tim, we're going to be the way that you can build the room. The way you kind of establish your room now is, like, it's been, like, sonopies, kind of relationships, and kind of building bonds. But I'm curious, is that something that you came in, like a couple years ago, with the intention of doing it, or is it something that you're like, that's kind of been cultivated over the course of your time as a physician, both here and the guys who? No, it's been there for a while. I've been doing that for a long time. It's all about relationship. If you develop real relationship and you're authentic in your communication,
and you have honest feedback, and you have direct teaching, the guys that have value and character and they appreciate that stuff, they're embrace that. So, but they have to know you care, and you have to know that it's real, and they have to know that you're really concerned about there where it being as a young man, and when you get close to them, it's been a lot of time with them off the field. You could coach them hard, and you can say truthful things to them, and then they'll embrace it, and you have real conversation, because you know the only goal is to help them get better as a young man. As you see, computers go, and then those journalists, the receiver room is so far ahead of the border, it's got a kind of skewed down evaluations on it. How's that dynamic change in these two years? Is this group shot in Boulder, and you're better at people working out? Yeah, it's done balanced up a little bit now. That goes with great competition. We go against the best receivers in college football. So, that helps escalate your growth process, because if you don't figure it out real fast, you're getting embarrassed. So, that competition, but what happened with that, I guys started competing, I guys started growing,
I guys got better, and now it's even up a little bit, so where you get really good work at practice today. So, it's competitive, it's fun, those guys both on both sides of the ball care about each other, so it's great competition, and they all are real close. So, you know what I mean? It's that stuff that gets us better, that will prepare us for Saturday. I think that's the same idea. First day of practice, actually, the receivers kind of got them, because I didn't get a break up call, maybe for this. No, it's just competitive, man. They got the best group in the country that you're going against every day, so you have to bring it every day. We got a great quarterback room, we got a great receiver room, the running backs are really good, so when you're out there going against them, it's deep, so you have to be ready for it. And obviously, man, we've seen a lot of good stuff with Stay in Coach Kelly, doing over there, so it prepares you a lot, and it helps us grow. So, why don't you go into your room, play kind of an satcheg for three and three? Is that... Is the one that you're recruiting, or a wide receiver room kind of,
a part of your recruiting? These are the guys you get to play against. Yeah, all of that, because you know, that's where you get better. Iron Shopping's iron. So, you know, you get to see that every day of practice, that helps you grow. It's no better thing to go against every day than to see that. On a daily basis. I'm also near room massage drawer, if you're looking at it to play that nervous part. We just move a lot of guys around. We watch our practice, we have a lot of guys in there right now. You know, we pop out through a four different guys in there, obviously the Renzos in there, Jameis in there, Caleb. Miles, we have about four or five guys moving around. Right now, we just try things out in Spring Ball. See what it fit, you know, see what things work together, so... It's no problem, it's some more guys in there. You know, we move it around to try to just get the right fit throughout the N and C. How it goes by the time we get really start the season. What's the difference out about Calvin and Simpson? He can run any strong, you know what I mean? He's fast, very serious about his business. He's big, he's 200 pounds, he can run, he's strong, he's conscientious. You know what I mean? He's starting to grow and he's starting to get better with it. You know what I mean? So, we look for big things for him in Spring. Tim, what do you want to see from here in Spring?
Keep competing. You know what I mean now? He's made the transition competing today. You know what I mean? Start going in. That transition is all just like how I'm in Japan last year. You throw him in the fire, you let him go, you compete, you go by the time we get out of the end of training camp. You'll be them figured out. Yeah, I want that. But now you just throw it all at him. Come compete, continue to grow, continue to learn. He has the skill set, he has the length. Now you just got to put it all together and it takes time to do that. And hopefully you see that by the time we get into training camp. It seems like a midway through Spring and kind of click for juvenile last year. And you start to see and perform a little better in practice. Is that like a benchmark for where you want parents to be? By the middle of Spring because you have to be in a certain point where you want it to start clicking. Yeah, by the time you start getting about two weeks from now, that last week. You know, because it takes time because there's a lot of stuff going on. But you know, by the time you get into that last week of Spring Ball, you'll start seeing the things that you look for show up. And then you get another evaluation again when you get into training camp. See if this stuff carried on to make sure we go up for starting in September. What's your assessment of the growth of the weeks that was made?
Now that he's kind of got his feet under one defense. What do you like about him and that knickles brought to you? He's very conscientious. He's smart. He can run. He's tough. He's made the adjustment because he's out of Europe on his belt. So now you can see he's not making a lot of mistakes. He competes. He's real conscientious. And he has a physical presence. So the growth has been really good and we look to continue that throughout Spring. Coach, thank you very much. I can ask one more. All the guys that came back, like Denzel's a great example. You could have been surprised you as you reflect on all these guys that came back late for Renzel. And they could have turned pro. No, the culture here is real. Coach, they does a great job of building the culture. Our room is close knit. The guys on defense are real close. Those guys want to come back. They have an agenda. You know, we want to come back. They want to come back and walk away with something. So it didn't shock me. But it's a good environment for them too. You know what I mean? That's when you see those guys come back. That's a testimony to the culture that's set here. That's their brotherhood, their environment.
And I, of course, today he runs the program for those dudes to want to come back. Because we go at it. It's hard. It's not easy. It's not easy. But what we do. So in fact, they come back and do that as a testimony to how he runs the program. Coach, thank you very much. As far as intensity, how would you evaluate your game tonight? Yeah. My goal was just to come out play as hard as I could. It was a little weird last week for the first time in my career playing a game that doesn't necessarily mean anything in terms of playoff contention. And I kind of had to check myself. And this week come in with a mindset of every game matters. And we need to put the best product out there that we can. And that's what I try to do. Later now, it was a cool push. Or you looked at the public and into your work and push up when you retired. You did seem shaken up right after you kind of just talked about what happened. Yes, Sam just tried to get on it and caught me.
It was more of like a stinger type thing. But the ref wanted me to go to the tent. So I had to go answer some questions. How many are home? It was like jammed. Yeah. My neck. You are home. I know that you've got a sort of a different home. Help to you. Yeah, maybe when it hits the top like that, it's not as good. But. Like these guys 11 months ago kind of crushed their dreams. Do you get the sense there are kind of a different team or. And also that they. This was a very important game for them to win. I don't think they're that different. I think they've had a ton of injuries on defense, which hurts them. But the mentality of the head coach, you could see it throughout everybody. It's really a cool team. I could. Just see from afar that it's probably a fun team to play for. And. They've they've come out and they've played a win every game and I respect that. But I've put so much emphasis on the ball.
All meetings take away. And I think you got two since the by week. Is there any accounting for that? I mean, is there so many different things that go into a turnover or take away? How do you track your brand around? It goes into every level of the defense. When you have your opportunity, I know we had two against. Stafford. That could have made. I mean, if maybe if we get those, it sparks a bunch of other ones. So you just have to make your. Make your plays when they're there and then. Just be in being the right spots and I don't think we've done a great job of that this year. I'm going to. Last night, I was in the soul. Is it all pro? Did you want that matchup? Would you would you think about that matchup? It's good. He's a really good player and. Yeah, I wanted to see where I'm at against him. Have you ever seen anything like the Jameson Williams touchdown or. It's pop act to him and you see something like that or.
I was in the tent. So I had no idea that happened. It was a play in this game. I'm kind of a misdirection sprinted all the way across the field to make the play. Did you see the play and. I think it was it the one gives cut back. Yeah, I had like a 10 yard. Cushion and he ran by me like I was didn't exist. And I tried to sprint and I just just like I. I don't have this and thankfully Mustafa is a heat seeking missile and. And he made the play. What was your mindset against man? I mean, I think we came in with the right mindset as a team. Just myself. It felt a little like. Dead energy wise. But yeah, it was a learning.
A moment for me to learn and and make sure that I come in with the right mindset every single week. There's like there's a lot of plays where you guys can. Past breakups and it will be like a couple plays in a row and then. There's an excellent amount. What can you believe in on about the existence. Yeah, I mean, we did we did get them to the second third and longs. And then yeah, they would make a big play and. You definitely want to capitalize when you when you back them up like that. We didn't do that tonight and that's why they scored 40 points. I'm sure yeah. Oh, yeah, for sure you had guys like Chris Carter.
Guys like Michael Thomas really new to guys for sure. Me Michael Thomas was talking to me before the game. Or the Rose Bowl and Chris Carter and after the game as well. I mean, just giving me advice. Just tell me keep golf first and know just keep doing what I've been doing the whole year. I mean, I'm got bug. I legend. So definitely look at them guys for sure. I mean, it's a lot of me just to care for Miami. I'll be able to play an actual championship as a freshman. I'll send it out dream. I'll as a kid and I'm here now and there's K rated K can't wait to put on show Monday. He said he got. I mean, the tips you know, like he says, made crazy each and every week playing. But you know, can't can't let it get to my head.
I should say, I mean, just football at the end of the day, but you know, just happy business. I mean, I should talk about this yesterday as well. But you know, I mean, that's what they do. That's what they do. I mean, we just got got there and no play our game and no short of reason why not to play men on man. Two. Four. Three. One. One.
I go five. It's per the problem. I'm not saying, you know, just go out there Monday. Just dominate the person I'm supporting me. You know, just do what I've been doing for the last two to three weeks, I should say. But you know, they play men on men. So I'm just ready for the challenge. Yeah. I mean, feels good. Just say somebody going out there and playing on men on man gets Ohio State receivers. It's something crazy. But you know, we just ready for the challenge. They say they're not changing the game plan, but we got to go out there and show them the reason why not to play men on man. Well, I mean, I'm pretty sure that the public of the month, we're going to be the conversation. Yeah. I mean, I don't really, if I be on the curve, I'd be on the curve.
I mean, it's not really a big deal to me. I mean, it definitely be a blessing for sure just to be on the cover of a game. But, you know, it's not really a dream of mine. It's a dream of mine, but I don't really think too much of it. I mean, no, not yet. Probably hit me after this easy. Just no playing in the Carlos football playoffs as a freshman, planning the roles, both as a freshman, planning a card and both, not in the national championship. I mean, it's a blessing for sure, but it hasn't hit me yet. I'm sure. My favorite catch, I would say we played Michigan State. The one I caught, but two defenders, definitely probably my favorite for sure. Or you could go the one from Iowa, I should say, and the answer, probably the two.
I mean, like you said, it's pretty frustrating me having a game that I had in the Rose Bowl. I mean, I'm coming to the Cotton Bowl and just doing different things, chasing their scheme up against me. But, I mean, like you said, whatever I could do to make the, I mean, hook the team win. It's not really a big deal for me. It's not really a big deal for me. As long as we win, that's all I really care about. And it got us to national championship. Right here. It means a lot. We put a lot of work in this, this season.
We have, how's we have lows. We have people cutting us out. But we hear now, we just ready to put on a show Monday. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. First of all, there's national championship because there were means a lot. I mean, you see everything that he bent through this year, people saying to be fired and this is the third. But, you see everything that he bent through this year. I mean, I seen everything that he bent through this year. I see everything. People saying my head on Twitter. I wasn't here. He first got the head coach and job. But I know this year for sure, we definitely got to win this for him. I mean, it's a lot, a lot of people in the league, I should say, I can't really say who.
But I mean, you had guys like, oh, there, you had guys like, oh, there, you got stuff on the eggs. It means a lot of my good Tom is Chris Carter. Just a lot of, you know, guys, I played in NFL and stuff like that. But yeah, really them guys for sure. You know, just keep going. You got it. You've messed up for sure. Really, I really, really that for sure. Yeah. So they said. Oh, like physical defense, like like you said, like people say, like they like to play man, they're not changing their skin. So we're just ready for the challenge. Like you said, the best defense we probably go see all year. And we just got to be ready to go out there Monday and just put on the show.
I'm excited for will him. First coming here in Ohio State January our first workout we had together. So just everything that we built through this season. I'm just happy for him to be in this position right now, but we got to finish the job and that's the winner Nadi Oman. I mean, it's pretty funny. I'm just only a freshman, but I miss the bloods for sure. People even say that, but I got two, three more years left of colors. And I'm just focused on colors right now. I'm not really worried about the NFL right now. It's very special for me. I mean, I just want to be in the freshman and the national stage. I appear for national titles, something that I dreamed of as a very young kid.
I'm just happy to be here and I just can't wait to put on some Monday for you guys. All of the reasons we just sit on the bench and we just see him hit the quarterback and the ball come out. And we all just got up and just started jumping up and down. We all decided. Happy for jacking that moment. And we just knew that that moment like, you know, let's we're going to the Nadi for sure. So I'm going to have to stay champion for the back of the set. Yeah. So like, let's afford to be one. I have to be the title for the national champion. How does that feel to have that moment that I'm going to be the next 10 more days? Uh, me. It's a lot of means, you know, going from high school or when a three-state championship, I'm a non-unite then you know, coming to Ohio State just competing for national title right now.
Me just so that I've picked two great schools, but I'm happy to be here and just came with the pool of show Monday. The coolest person. I mean, you got a lot. I can't really say just a specific person. You got a lot of great guys. We're trying to lead like, oh, Dale, you had guys like Stefan Dex. A lot of other players will just get kind of my mom, but really, really them two guys will show. Oh, Dale, a step on this. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, like they say, they play man. So I mean, I'm just ready for the challenge and just get ready to go out there Monday. I just know put them so thank you.
The vice-geno, how you gave me. I said just keep golfers. I know the reason why I'm here. Yeah, like he said, just keep golfers and just keep the main thing and the best corner I've faced this year. I mean, I've faced a lot of great corners. I can't really say, but yeah, I've faced a great corner. I can't really put a name on it. I'm not going to give it a go. My dream occasion is Teres and K-Codes. I'm going to give it a go. What are you? What are you? Yeah.
I say both respect and frustration as well. But I mean, I doubt they come out there and try to be mean. They say you stick it to what they've been doing all year. And that's playing man covers, which is ready for the challenge. Pretty good group. Christian Gary 29 is a great corner. 15. I mean, you know, the other guys are a lot more. Two great guys are right there. Very physical, but, you know, we all highest never see, but so we're ready for the challenge. I'm just understanding the defense, understanding the game plan, understanding what Coach Kelly is trying to get done.
I mean, just coming in, I feel I progress from our first game against Akron. And now I feel like I better each and every week. I mean, things slowed down a lot for me. But yeah, really just understanding the differences and understanding what they're trying to do to me for sure. I'm two guys. Great part of the best we go see all year for sure. Two physical guys. But, you know, we're ready. We're ready for the challenge that they're coming with. And that's the play man. Oh man. And, you know, we ready to go on Monday. Yeah. I mean, the environment is pretty crazy. Seeing all these cameras. Something I never thought I'd see them alive, but it's a blessing for sure. This is the main institution right now.
I mean, we just had a prayer, prayer, prayer, prayer, prayer meeting. And, you know, we all, they all discuss the issues, because they discuss issues. And, you know, we just want the work. I mean, not two and a half weeks we had off before Tennessee game. And we just came out there on Tennessee game. And we played with a trip on our, on a trip on our shoulder.
