He reflects on how, when drinking, the real alcoholic becomes a person almost unrecognizable from their true self.

“I was pretty tweaked out all the time, right? Anybody else? There was no in-between. I’m either using or I’m not. His disposition while drinking resembles his normal nature but little. If we can’t be honest with ourselves, if we can’t differentiate the true from the false, how do we know what our normal nature was? Did we know what our normal nature was? I mean, lying, cheating, and thieving really is not who I am.”

Wayne shares his experience of being extroverted even while tweaking, keeping people around him only to complain about their presence. This behavior underscores the Jekyll and Hyde transformation many alcoholics experience, becoming dangerously antisocial despite being, at their core, good people.
