Position of Neutrality: Exploring Guidance and Understanding in Steps 5, 6, & 7 AA
About this episode
Join Joe McDonald as he reads from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, diving into the raw and emotional experiences outlined in the early pages of the book. Reflecting on the value of seeking guidance from various sources, Joe discusses the importance of understanding the true nature of one’s problems.
“Though we have no religious connection, we may still do well to talk with someone ordained by an established religion. How many of you have done that? In the whole recovery community, it’s not uncommon to want to go to somebody in the ministry because what we have to say is protected by the confessional. We often find such a person quick to see and understand our problem. Of course, we sometimes encounter people who do not understand alcoholics. They may quickly see and understand what you think is my problem and not understand that what you think is my problem is not the problem at all. If you see me when I’m out running and gunning in active addiction, you think my problem is I have a fondness for opiate drugs.”
Joe’s discussion sheds light on the importance of seeking understanding and support from those who truly grasp the nature of addiction. This session emphasizes the need for thorough and honest communication in the recovery process.
