Access providers, weak IAM controls and missing logging are nearly universal, affecting 80% to 98% of accounts. Azure misconfigurations are storage centric, with rotation not enabled 67%, storage keys enabled 66%, public network access enabled 61%, entry users lacking MFA 55%, and trusted launch not enabled 45%.
The 2026 Cloud Security Index analyzes misconfigurations from about 3,000 organizations across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud to compare provider risk profiles. Google Cloud misconfigurations are dominated by identity issues, OS Logan MFA not enabled 77%, OS Logan not enabled 76%, unused service accounts 75%, overly permissive service accounts 53%, and permissive port ingress 34%. AWS shows the highest misconfiguration prevalence due to its broader service footprint, while Google Cloud appears comparatively lower, potentially due to fewer services and stronger defaults under a shared fate model. Week encryption is most prevalent on AWS 49%, followed by Azure 35%, with Google Cloud lowest at 8%. Airwall permissions vary by provider, with AWS permissive rules at 83%, Azure at 45%, and Google Cloud at 34%.
A warning from the world of container sandboxes, when network exposure and authentication aren't coordinated, defaults can create an attacker foothold. Two CVEs published on September 5, 2026 highlight this risk for Cua and auto agent, each with a 9.8 CVSS score due to insecure sandbox defaults. Cua binds to all interfaces in local mode with authentication skipped, while auto agent exposes a root-tied sandbox on all interfaces with no authentication and a writable host-bind mount. These configurations enable endpoints that can execute commands, read and write files, and present an interactive PTY without credentials when exposed over the network. When guidance calls for five checks before running these tools, PIN to secure versions, bind to loopback, do not run containers as root, publish ports only on loopback, and mount volumes read only unless necessary, keeping credentials out of mounted directories. In terms of patch status, version 0.3.42 for Cua binds to local host in local mode and requires
an opt-in flag to go public, while auto agent has a fix in progress or not yet released for all configurations, with ongoing issue number 96. The broader takeaway is that secure defaults and explicit opt-ins are essential to prevent a sandbox from becoming an attacker's foothold.
