People Who Annoy You

About this episode

Dr. Matt James is back home in Hawaii after a hurricane just passed through, and his heart goes out to everyone in the community who was impacted. But today Dr. Matt is talking about something different: the people who annoy you.

His take: the people who bug you the most aren’t random. A former student, Kristin, reminded him of something he used to teach, that the people who annoy you the most are here to give you the biggest lessons because they’re actually a mirror for you.

Dr. Matt shares his own example. Getting cut off in line used to set him off until he realized the real issue wasn’t the other person’s behavior, it was his own reaction. If you lose control of your energy, your mindset, or your emotions because of somebody else’s behavior, that’s a clue pointing back at you. It’s not proof that their behavior is universally wrong. Some people brush the exact same thing off without a second thought.

The real question isn’t “why did they do that.” It’s “why does this bother me, and what do I need to work on?”

Welcome to the Empowering Your Life podcast. I'm Dr. Matt James and I'm looking forward to sharing this journey with you. I'm in Hawaii. I'm talking about people who annoy you today. That's the topic that I want to get into and we're back home. There was a hurricane. We lost some pretty, pretty amazing things. Put on a lute sweet bread. The whole building got taken down and I just I feel for anyone that was impacted by that way. The second hurricane go by but big islands okay. Hawaii is getting hit and it is what it is. The living in an island I think no matter where you live you deal with some kind of natural something. Fires in California, whatever it is. But here in Hawaii we have paradise and we also have to deal with certain things as well. No matter where you live, no matter where you go, there are just people that annoy the living shit out of you. You know what I'm talking about? It's so amazing. It's so unbelievably incredible.

I hadn't said this for a while. We have a student of ours that is a big part of what we do. It's perfect timing that someone just turns on a leaf blower. It's so amazing. My wife is cracking up right now. She's laughing. I don't even know if you can hear me right now. What is perfect? Like literally right across the fence. They can hear that I'm talking but they blow a leaf blower. Look at me. I'm good. I'm chill about it. You see Kristen who is a big part of our community and she's going to be here in Huna. She said to me, she said, you used to have this saying that hit me so hard when I was in level one. She said, you used to say the people that annoy you the most are here to give you the biggest lessons. They're here to give you the biggest lessons because they're actually a mirror for you. Now that's a hard fucking pill for some people to swallow. I'll tell you what it really is because to sit there and go, no, that person that did that over there, that person that acted that way that that gave a crappy tip. I used to wait tables. Larin, I used to wait tables and shitty tips are just like, man, I gave you great service. I deserve something better.

If they irritate you though, it's a reflection of you because you should feel the shrugged off and laugh. You should be able to just smile and go, is what it is. What was one, a minor one for me used to be people that cut in line. And I blamed it on a local thing. I blamed it on this Hawaii thing where you don't cut in line. You're a local. It must be a main laner. It must be a tourist or something. What hit me was that there was a lesson for me to learn in that. Maybe they need to hurry up as my wife says. Maybe they need to poop. Maybe they got to jump ahead of you on the freeway because they are in a rush. Who cares what you do? If you lose control of your energy, your mindset, your emotions because of somebody else's behaviors, that's a clue for you. And you cannot tell me that every behavior that you don't like is universally disliked because some people just shrugged off. You get cut off on the freeway. Some people just shrugged off.

Someone cuts in front of you in line. Some people shrugged off. Some people swear like me. It pisses some people off. Some people are like, thank God he does. You got to stop and you got to look in the mirror and you got to go, what is it that annoys me about this? And then what do I need to do about it? Is it release work? Is it whole opponent upon noise? Reading my book on the shadow. Is it getting to EMP too? If you did EMP and man, we only run it once every other year and the whole thing is about the shadow and I'm an animus. It's a deep dive on that. I'm remiting my book on the shadow. It's going to take a little while for it to come out. And I really want to help people understand that these things that you experience or a reflection of you, the moment you own it, you're empowered. To the extent that you say it's not me, you go down a path of this empowerment. Alright, I'm going to be here in Hawaii now. We got Hoona coming up. So I'm not going to see you for a couple of weeks and that's okay. After Hoona is done, I think I think three weeks we're not going to be doing any. Then after Hoona is done, I'll be back in Houston and jump and write in with you.

Alright, take care. All of you. Aloha. I hope you enjoyed that podcast. It's Dr. Madigan. And I just wanted to say thank you so much for being a part of this journey. The mission that we have at the Empowerment Partnership is to help individuals become more empowered on their own. I believe that's possible for anybody. And part of what we love to do is to give back. We give back as much as we can. And one of the things that you may have noticed is there's no commercials. There's no advertising. I'll talk a little bit about our websites right now. That's about it. And so what we ask is if in return you could do us a huge favor and share this with as many people as you possibly would. Share it with them. Tell them about our websites. The links have them listened to it. And if an inspired you at all, help other people become inspired as well. If you want to learn more about what we do, you can check me out on my personal website, Dr. Madt.com, www.brmat.com.

You can check out our company page at nlp.com, neuro-linguisticprogramming.com, nlp.com. Or just join us up on Facebook. You can check us out on Facebook by typing in Dr. Madt. And that should pull up my couple of pages that I have there. And we can link up and stay connected in that way. So thank you all again so much. Take care. Aloha, a hui ho.
