The New England Patriots decided not to use the franchise tag on any of their unrestricted free agents this offseason. They had six players eligible, including Ed Ruscher-Kalevon Shason, their sack leader, plus Titan Austin Hooper, and a few Lyman and a safety. Those tags would have cost a fortune, anywhere from $15 million for a tight end up to $27 million for a defensive tackle. So for the second year in a row, all the Patriots free agents will hit the open market without that safety net. Fans and analysts saw this coming, given the high prices and the team's strategy to let negotiations play out naturally, it means the Patriots can still resign players on their own terms before free agency ramps up, without committing to a fully guaranteed one-year deal.
