Patriots Release Linebacker Tavai, Free Agency Looms

The 29-year-old veteran learned of the move on Monday. Tavi signed a three-year contract extension worth $16 million in base value before the 2024 training camp. It ran through 2027, with $3 million due in base salary next season. The release leaves behind about $2.887 million in dead money. Over his time in Foxboro, Tavi appeared in 76 games and made 51 starts. He totaled 350 tackles, three and a half sacks, three interceptions, and three force fumbles across defense and special teams. He joined the Patriots practice squad in 2021 after two years with the Detroit Lions. This season, Tavi missed time on injured reserve before returning in October and later receiving the team's Ed Block Courage Award.
