My name is John and that's my brother Mike and my name is Mike and that's my brother John. Mike and I talk angels baseball five times a week Monday through Friday. Every single weekday we're entering our fifth season as the hosts of locked on angels. And we hope that you leave here a more informed angels fan. You feel like a better angels fan after the discussions that we have on each and every episode. Before we begin, Mike, I got to shout out every day or Robert Amberg. He's going to be mad at me for doing this because he didn't want to credit, but he was intempi and he sent me this hat, the cactus league hat. And I love it. It's about time the angels had some sweet merch for spring training in this cactus with the halo on it is super cool. So Robert, thank you so much for sending that he's part of our all access club got to spend some time with him in our like video chats and stuff. So it's been a lot of fun. All right. On to today's show, Angels Top Prospect Tyler Bremner. He was invited to spring training, but he hasn't pitched yet.

2:00Why is that? And also, where's Kaden Dana been? So we haven't seen him either. But first, Mike, before we get to all that, let's talk about the angels versus the Mariners yesterday. Yeah. The angels had their second come from behind victory in a row on Tuesday. They put up a three run top of the ninth and defeated the Mariners seven to six. You know, it's funny. Christian Moore was part of those comeback victories in spring last year. This year, it's your old Yomar Sanchez doing all the heavy lifting for these guys in the late innings, isn't it? We'll talk about that a little bit. I like it, John. I think that that shows some some some grittiness, some guttiness. I really like that the angels, at least their young players are able to come back in these games. So let's get to our takeaways. First one, John. George Klossin had his second start of the spring, got another nod on the mound after facing the Padres last week. John, he went three innings, gave up three hits to earn on two solo home runs. Had a walk and four Ks on 51 pitches. Don Dea had a friend that I went to dinner with last night who asked, hey, who was that guy?

3:02Who's that bitch game for the angels? He's a Mariners fan and he said that guy was really impressive. We'll talk about what he did specifically in this game and what the angels should do with him. But let's break down what he did in his start. So take us to the first inning, John. Yeah. First inning, he got Brennan Donovan to strike out looking. That felt good because you know how much we wanted Brennan Donovan on our team over the offseason. But he got traded to the Mariners. Not his fault. No, he got traded there. Yeah. But still for the Mariners as well. Yeah. Still felt good to get a strike out on him. Yeah. Mike, he got a ground up to third where Christian Moore made the play. He looked really good over there. We're going to talk about that more in a little bit. Then he gave up a walk, a single, and then he got to pop out from JP Crawford to end the inning. And the second inning, a first pitch fastball, the Patrick Wisdom goes out for a home run. It was a 97 mile an hour fastball and it was 113.6 off of Wisdom's bat. Now what you need to know is that all Patrick Wisdom has done in his career is hit home runs. He hasn't hit for average.

4:03He's got like a two or three career average. He was in the KBO last year. So that power versus power, Wisdom's going to win that one. Yeah. That was a first pitch fastball kind of down in a way and he took it for a ride. Closson got a ground out and a strike out looking. Then he gave up another home run to Mariners, Ryland Thomas on a slider. That thing was a line hugger. Had a 190 expected batting average, but it just stayed fair, went right down the line. Closson got a ground out to end the second inning. And then in the third inning, he got a strike out, a ground out, and another strike out. Yeah. And notes on his stuff today, there weren't any whiffs on the fastball. That was surprising. I think maybe the Mariners knew what to expect from George Colosson, but he did get four whiffs on the change up Mike. I find that significant because our buddy Taylor Blake Ward, former host of the show locked on Angel's Hall of Famer. He shared a really great note on Twitter about the improvements that Closson has been making

5:05to his pitching repertoire over the last few years. Essentially, I'll break it down for you. He added a change up, which really rounds out his arsenal. It's not the best pitch in his arsenal, but it's another weapon that makes his other pitches better because now hitters have to look for a second, like North South pitch in regard to his curve ball. And now he's got this change up. And he's improved his pitch shape so that the pitches don't just blend together. They are much more distinct from one another. And adding this change up in gives him a weapon against lefties. And it only improves the stuff that's really impressive. Mike, I called him a future ace last week. Are we still on that after an outing against the Mariners yesterday? Well, what's this weed nonsense that you're bringing up? You said it. I never said it. No, I get what you mean, and I agree with you. I do think he is a future ace, John. I think he has shown to be a future ace because he's got the mentality and he's got the

6:07stuff. But a day like today, and then TBW's comments demonstrate the importance of his minor league development. Yeah. They don't have to rush him to the major leagues because they do have, whether you agree with it or not, they have depth in the starting pitching area where they can turn to different people. They may not be the best options, but they can turn to different people. And I think what you learn from George Clausen today is that man, he is on the precipitate of being really good, but he's got to figure out his command and he's got to figure out that extra pitch and he's got to really make sure that he is staying in the game mentally so that he can continue to be what I really think will be a potential ace for the angels. And TBW mentioned that he's, it's been like a 24 month process of making his pitch shapes better, you know, adding a little bit more bite to stuff and working on this change up to that's the importance of minor league development. They haven't rushed this guy to the majors, they haven't got him in there into the rotation, they haven't given him a look out of the bullpen or anything like that.

7:08Yeah. And I think that's significant. I think you handle somebody like Clausen with kid gloves because you know how important he's going to be to the future of your team. For once, I feel like the angels are showing some patience in a very good way. Let's talk some hitting. It wasn't the angels A lineup, but they did have some regulars in their O'Hoppy more and potentially Bryce T. Adosio could be a regular. We got good with, with, with Christian Moore and Bryce T. Adosio, they got hits off of Brian Wu. Wu is an ace. He's the Mariners ace and he was last year Christian Moore even stole second base with Brian Wu on the mound and the third inning, the angels answered back after Clausen's two home runs. Kind of lairio walked T. Adosio singled, Chris Taylor struck out and then the Mariners brought in a reliever, Michael Rucker, hasn't been in the bigs since 2023. Nick Magical singled, which by the way, he's got a 500 batting average in spring training, which it's going to be, it's like deceptive, right? It's like a deceptive batting average in spring training, right?

8:09That's his whole career. When we picked him up and we talked about him, like that's his whole career is just like these little little thing, little bleeders through the infield, you know, that's kind of thing. So that's Nick Magical in a nutshell. He's finding some holes, but John, what I loved about this moment was Logan O'Hoppy came through with an RBI single, then he stole second base. Now, the angels, they've been stealing some bags, by the way, this spring. And I like that that they're actually doing that. They're not talking about how they're going to do it. They're actually doing that, which I think is one of the reasons why they've had this good hitting and a good offensive flow. Their offensive flow started struggled a bit because they're working through some things, but I do think that them being quick on the base pass and being a team that you have to keep an eye on, I think it really helps them at the play. It doesn't it. And even if it's not somebody like Michael Rucker, you know, veteran guy's been around in the bigs, but hasn't pitched in the bigs since 2023, you still got to put this stuff into practice, right? So even if it's not the greatest, the world's greatest reliever in the Mariners, they're just giving them a look, right, for some death.

9:11You still got to put this stuff into practice. You still got to be able to run and steal bags and do stuff like that and, you know, not strike out when you're Logan O'Hoppy instead, you get an RBI single, which man, he just seems to be having the time of his life in spring training. A lot of the depth got going in this one, Mike. Iron Paris walked later in the game and then Jamie or Candelario hit a two-run home run. Mike, I want to point out it was 109.2 off the bat. And I know that we get tied up in the numbers and things like that, but here's the thing. He hasn't hit a ball that hard since 2023. And since 2023, he's dealt with knee tendinitis, a fractured toe, spinal injury, all kinds of stuff. So it's good to see him healthy. And then, of course, I mentioned it. Yomair Sanchez, the hero, once again, for the second day in a row, Rowdy Rodriguez doubles to start the ninth, Nelson Rada takes a walk, Sanchez doubles them both in to score and tie up the game. And then here's Sebastian Rivera, you know, our third string catcher, Sackbunt, having Sanchez

10:12over to third. And then Donovan Walton, some depth, a single to drive in Sanchez and they took the lead. The depth, Mike, is maybe starting to look good. This feels like AMPM, too much good stuff because there's not a lot of room on this roster. But there's a lot of guys that I want to turn to from AAA if they're willing to take on a minor league deal and stay with the team because I know a lot of these veteran guys have the option to, you know, get out of town if they don't want to stay in the minors for the angels. Yeah. Yeah, I think that I would love for this to be a difficult decision for the angels instead of them just going well. I guess we're just going to run with this guy. Make it really difficult because I think that that benefits the team as they move into the regular season. Johnny, Christian Moore played third base for the angels again. Moncada is playing for team Cuba in the WBC. We're probably going to see a lot more Christian Moore over at third base. And I honestly, I like him there. I really do. I know that there was some pushback from every dayers that said, oh, he didn't have the

11:13army. He doesn't have this. Yeah. Where's the evidence for that? Over at third until the last couple of games. I just think that that we're in the cycle of just not being excited about the team. And I think sometimes that just comes out. And then there are just some people that they just got to point out the negative and they got to point out that something's not good all of the time. I think Christian Moore at third base is actually starting to work. That's my perspective. What's yours? I'd love to see him over there more often. And with Moncada going to be in the WBC, give more, more starts over there. And if that means that maybe Von Grissom is the better option at second base, maybe Kyron Paris works his way in at second base. Mike, I said it the other day, Moore just feels like a natural third baseman. And the way he was making plays and attacking the ball from the infield, he looked really good yesterday. And it was nice to see on TV because the mirror nurse broadcast had it on TV. But so far, I think he looks better as a third baseman than a second baseman.

12:17Joining me, I think that because the angels reached to get him, there's a narrative around him like Tyler Bremner that people are like, well, he's really not, he's really not this. He's really not that. I think the guy's an athlete. And I think that he's somebody who is obviously a winner and he wants to go and get it. The new manager for the San Francisco Giants was his head coach at Tennessee. And he said, watch out for Christian, Christian Moore, like I'm paraphrasing what he said. But he was like, I'll take that guy on my team because he's going to be a perennial all-star every single season. And I think this guy knows Christian really well. And the fact that he's even attempting to play third base and doing it with some substance, I think is a good sign for the angels this season. Yeah, certainly not nervous while he's over there at third base and he showed out yesterday over there. Thanks for making a lot on angels. You're first listening of the day. Hey, if you're wondering where Kaden Dana has been in spring training, it's because he's been super sick Mike Doug Padilla of the OC register reported on what's been going on with Dana and his progress in tempi. He got to camp at the beginning of February, but he was sick with a fever and it wouldn't go away. And he had endless fatigue and then ultimately he was diagnosed with mono. Hey, remember two years ago when I was in the hospital and I was sick and we couldn't figure out what was going on. Well, they they thought I had mono turns out I got bit by a bug in Pasadena and it gave

16:29me typhus friggin right organ trail nonsense. So I sympathize with Dana because all the symptoms were the same except we had two very different outcomes. So I'm glad they finally diagnosed him and and I'm glad that I survived that bout and got to continue doing the show with you because I don't know what you would do without me. I'd be talking about Kaden Dana and how he has the kissing disease. Who's he kissing? Right? Now, fortunately he is feeling better. He got to throw from a mound for the first time in the spring. It was a short bull pin session. He was asked how soon he'd be ready to get into a game and he said, I definitely feel ready. I definitely feel on track and I definitely don't want to rush this process because I definitely don't want anything bad to happen down the road. So I'm just going to trust the angels here and trust their timeline. Now, Kaden's been building up for camp in January. He said, I felt right where I left off to be honest when he got before he got sick and

17:30then he got sick and he said, I really, I don't really think, I didn't really think that there were any bumps on the road there. I felt like I was really good coming into camp. Once Dana's health started to improve the angels, let him play catch and keep his arm loose and those moments ramped him up and they're going to ramp up those intensity. The intensity of those moments and help him to get ready and they're going to work on his breaking pitches in those times as well. Dana said, I was coming in later in the day and I was able to get my throwing and spin and stay up to date. I know that was going to be important because I knew when I started feeling better, I didn't want to have to build up to throwing again. He said he didn't lose any weight while he was sick, which is good news. He said, it was definitely easier to keep my weight up when I lived with Ben Joyce and Logan O'Hoppy. Those two dudes yoked and so he's like, I've got to keep up with those guys. So I love that. Johnny, Kate and Dana, 22 years old, didn't have a great year in AAA last year as he did

18:36in AA in 2024, what do you think is next for him? I think you got to have some patience with a guy like Kate and Dana. He's been exciting to see. I love that they've given him some looks in the major leagues, especially in September when the angels are out of it. That's the time that you bring somebody up and let them see what they can do. In fact, Mike, I know that there's not a lot of data in the nitty gritty when it comes to minor league stuff, but as far as the major league improvements that he made from when he first came up for a cup of coffee in 24 and then compared to 2025, there's a couple of things that I saw that got better when Dana came around the second time. The expected batting average in 24 was 255. This past year it went down to 244, so that's a good improvement. Strike out rate was 15.4% when he first came up last year in the majors. It was 23.4%, so that's a good improvement there.

19:38The walk rate, while still not great, it did drop from 13.5% to 12.8%. This one's significant to me because I think it speaks a lot to what a pitcher is capable of despite the results on the mound. I know that seems kind of contradictory, but expected ERA in 2024 was at 6.90. He got that down to a 4.86, expected ERA in 2025, so definitely, definitely an improvement there. Yeah. For Kaden, definitely Dana, we'll start calling him that around here. Mike, he added more break on the curve ball and some horizontal break on the fastball. You might think that has to do with the fact that the release point stayed consistent. Remember, that was a huge issue for Kaden Dana, especially when he came up in 2024 because Major League teams, they're going to identify that instantly because they're going to have

20:39video on you. They're going to see that you throw your curveball way up here and your fastball here and your slider to the side and whatnot. If you're given away your pitches based on where your arm is, Major League hitters are going to pick up on that instantly. As far as what comes next for Kaden Dana, I say, put him back in AAA, see how the season goes. I think one thing we've taken away from George Klassen is the importance of letting these guys develop in the minor leagues, give them time to work through stuff, give them time to figure things out. I know the jump from the minors to the majors is quite significant and I think it's significant with Kaden Dana and I think that's been in the results that we've seen where you get excited when he comes up and then the line score isn't great. The ERA is not great, and so I think at this point, let him have that time and triple A. Again, he's 22. He's one of the high school pitchers that the angels were able to draft and they haven't

21:43done a lot of that. They've been doing it more recently in recent drafts, but Kaden Dana was one of the first actual pitchers out of high school that they took and that's a good thing because it gives you a long leash to work with, it gives you a long time to work with them. So I don't see any need to rush Kaden Dana. I don't think that he makes the rotation in 2026, I think they have enough arms to handle that. They have enough guys to turn to if there is an injury. I don't think that he'd be first on my list to call up simply because I want to see him work on things some more and see if he can be better than that triple A season from a year ago. We all know triple A is not easy to pitch in and so if you are able to pitch in there with some success, then you're going to face more fringe major league guys, guys who are kind of past their prime but have been there, done that and if he can have success against those guys, well, the next step is taking it up a notch and coming up to the majors when he's ready.

22:45I just think 22, he's not ready yet and that's okay, right? Definitely. I think, and I'll reiterate what I said in the first segment when we talked about George Clawson, we have the depth to be able to keep these guys at bay, right? Like to keep these guys in the minor leagues to work on some things. It may not be the depth that we want and it may not be significant depth, but we do have starting pitchers with major league experience over a period of a few seasons that can handle the starting rotation. It is yet to be determined if they can do it successfully, but that means that you can at least give Kate and Dana and George Clawson and Sam Meltagiri and Walbert Urania and all of those guys an opportunity to really develop and work on their stuff before you have to turn to them because quite frankly, if that's the starting rotation within the next couple of years, I'm kind of hyped about who's coming up, but I want them to be ready. I don't want to see them get rocked at what we've seen from Kate and Dana. When he does come up, he might have an inning or two where he's not great, but then he

23:47was able to stay in the game and go in a couple of instances, five, six, seven innings, and he was able to at least keep the angels in the game. Now, five hits and five runs. That's an ugly, ugly line, but when it comes in one inning and then you do great in the other four, five or six innings, that shows me there's a lot of potential there, but it also shows me that there's a lack of maturity when it comes to being a major league caliber pitcher on the mound, which is what you learn in the minor leagues and the angels again have that ability right now to let him marinate a bit in the minor leagues. I'm glad you brought that point up because in regard to what Klauson was able to do yesterday, he gives up the solo home run. It didn't it didn't phase him. Yeah, in shake him. He was mad at himself, right, and shook his head, but he was able to come right back and you know, get a strikeout right after that. The ground out and then he gets that, you know, line hugger home run and he bounced back after that and got the next guy out. So I just think it's significant when you watch these guys maturity is a good word for it.

24:48How do they handle adversity? How can Kaden Dana handle the adversity of AAA and how that season wasn't as great? Can he overcome that? So maturity comes with the experience maturity comes with getting out there and facing competition that again might not be major league competition. But when you when you clean up in AA, what's left for you to do except go to AAA, where the park factor works against you, where, you know, some of the hitters are better than AA guys, you just it's time to test yourself. It's like putting more weights on the on the on the barbell, right? You got to be able to push yourself and say, all right, what comes next? This is what I'm going to do next. And so again, as 22 years old, he still got a lot of maturity to handle or take on. He's got adversity to handle and it'll be good to see how he navigates difficult situations in the minor leagues in 2026.

Did someone just drop what they were doing so that they could go play the show? Is that what happened back here? You heard that too. Hey, we know that the angels number one pick from the draft last year. And their number one prospect, Tyler Bremner, was invited as a non-roster invite to spring training, but we haven't seen him yet. Where's he been? What's he doing? Why is that? Well, the monsoon. He's been hanging out with, oh, never mind. The reason, according to Rep Bolinter of MLB.com is that Bremner has been working on his slider mic. He said he threw about seven or eight of them. Vlad, it wasn't six or seven against Denzer Guzman and Nolan Chonowell.

27:57He said, I like it right now. I feel like I did well today. I got some strikes with it. Got some swings with it. Never really got hit. I just need to get it down a bit. I had a few uncompetitive ones. Now, Bremner has been learning from pitching coach Mike Maddox. He's also gotten some tips from Alec Manoa and Nolan Chonowell. Even though his best pitch is this insanely good, highly graded change up, Nolan Chonowell gave him pretty good bit of advice, didn't he, Mike? Yeah, Chonowell told him he can't start it off the plate and have it fade away because big league hitters just won't swing at it. I mean, I love that. I love that. That no one's like, bro, let me just let me hook you up. Let me help you out. Bremner said of Mike Maddox. He's telling me based on swings what pitches he wants me to throw. That's something I need to get used to and try to learn. I get into a habit sometimes of competing, trying to throw nasty stuff. And that's important too, reading swings and knowing what kinds of pitches

29:00work against what guys. Now, Bremner, he touched 98 on his fastball in those live sessions against Guzman and Chonowell. And he said, obviously, I want to get into a game, but it's not entirely up to me. Whatever they tell me, I'm going to do. John, when we talk about George Clauston and his outing, being a good reason to let these guys develop, is this a sign that Bremner? Is this a good sign that Bremner hasn't gotten into a game yet? I think again, it shows a lot of patience that we have not seen from the angels and their development process in quite some time, Mike. I don't know if that's changed because Perry has had a change of heart. Maybe it's Mike Maddox and his influence saying like, hold on guys, let's slow things down a little bit. We don't need to be rushing these guys into the major leagues. Now, I wouldn't say that Bremner getting into a cactusly game qualifies as rushing him into the majors or rushing his development or anything like that.

30:00At the same time, Mike, the biggest criticism that we heard from angel fans and even some everydayers was that Bremner needs a third pitch. He's got fastball change up again. The best change up in the class of 2025. However, he's needed to develop that slider and all the scouting reports said, yeah, he's got a third pitch. It is a slider, but it's not very good. So the fact that they're slowing down and taking time with this stuff, I think that's great. I think it's significant. It's what good teams do when they want to develop good starting pitching. Where was this philosophy five years ago? I'm not sure. Maybe it's because Mike Maddox wasn't here, but the truth is, I can see them rushing position players up because I think that the good cannot weigh the bad, but when it comes to pitching, I really think he got to take your time with these guys. We've seen, you know, Redeemer's was an Epler pick, but he did come up the first year that Perry was in charge of the team in 2021.

31:05We saw Sam Bachman and Chase Silsett pretty quickly after they were drafted. Maybe Mike, they learned from those mistakes, I guess you could say, because when you have somebody who's your number one pick like Sam Bachman, having, you know, he's had shoulder issues. He's had injury issues, but he's pitching out of the bullpen. And right now, he's deaf. He's not going to start on this team in the bullpen in 2026. He'll come up if there's an injury or a guy needs a rest and, you know, they can send him up and down because he's got option years. But the truth is, that's not what you wanted out of your number one pick. So maybe there's a lesson that they've learned at this point. What do you think? Yeah, I think you're on to something. But I would say that with this team, with the angels, if you have a rock star pitcher that is just ready to go, then I say, let him fly. Let him jump to the major league. He's a big cock. He got a lot of flies. But Bremner just really hasn't had the reps yet.

32:07And so that's why he does need to be in the minor leagues. That's why he does need to work on some things. Plus that third pitch is going to be something that needs to be developed. John, what I like about him is that he reminds me of a lot of the most recent picks. He's got, he thinks different. He just thinks different. He's aware of it, right? It's makeup. Yeah, we talk about that all the time. What's the mental makeup of a player? Because honestly, if Perry Menossian has done anything right in his tenure, it's getting guys with good mental stability, right? Because sand of all, you know, was an Epler trade. And again, Dettmer's was an Epler pick. And we've seen how they crumble on the mound. They've got great stuff. And I was a big Patrick sand of all fan when he was here. I always rooted for the guy. And you always rooted for Dettmer's. But we've seen how they crumble on the mound when things go wrong. And you know, poor Patrick sand of all, a lot of it wasn't his fault. Remember, he had so many unearned runs against him one year.

33:09And it's just like, that gets frustrating. I get that. But you got to keep your composure. Yeah, you got to lock in on the next guy. And that's something that I feel like we've seen from the younger talent that has been acquired, whether it's international free agency, whether it's the draft, whether it's through trade. I think Perry has done a lot to get some guys with good mental makeup, right? Yeah, that's what makes me excited about the guys that he's drafted and why I'm excited about what's happening in our minor leagues. No matter the rankings, that's why I'm excited because they think different. They talk different. And I think that they play different. And you can see that in just simple interviews like this with Tyler Bremner, there's something different about the guys they've drafted recently. That's, you know, it is their makeup. It's more than just a clinic counter, right? It's actually how they're designed and wired. And they're just different than the picks that they've picked prior to Paramanosian getting here. Yeah. And when you go back to, you know, the all-pitcher draft and how critical everyone has been of that, I mean, at the time, all we ever heard was the angels need pitching,

34:12angels need pitching. And we agreed with that because that was the key thing that had been missing from 2015 onward. You lose, you know, Jared Weaver to free agency. He wasn't very good at the end of his tenure. Garrett Richards was hurt and he didn't get to stick around. And so all they ever needed was pitching. And so they tried to correct that. They over-correct that. They missed out on a lot of great draft picks that they could have had in the system because of some of the guys that got taken after who were making an impact now. Yeah. That's unfortunate. But I think we're finally seeing an uptick in the arms and the angel system. Again, remember, the system's great and low, but it was last year around this time that they said the angel actually have one of the top pitching systems across baseball. And it's guys like Bremner. It's guys like Klauson. And I will even say, Kaden Dana, who are contributing to that. Again, the mental makeup has to be there. They have to be able to overcome adversity. And I think showing patience and restraint
