All right, let's talk Padres. Our buddy, Darren Smith, joining us right now. This is such fitting timing to have you on, Darren. You're going to have fun with this. Yeah, crats knows where I'm going here. First off, Darren's the man all over the scene in San Diego. If you don't know him, Friar territory is a smash. 2:01I'm just going to start off with some juice right from the jump. Darren, we did a power ranking segment. And my friends Todd and Eric did not include the Padres in their top 10. Your thoughts? In the top 10, huh? Well, crats is a known Padre hater out here. Most of the Padre fans definitely believe that he's out to get them. So, you know, not the Padres. Just Fernando Tetease. Just Fernando Tetease. Oh my god. And Preller. There's a little bit of that Preller stuff too. So, you know, that's the way the fans have their own top 10 list. And you're definitely in the top 10. Ken Rosenthal's on top of it, but you're in there as well. For sure. Listen, I will say, like being a prisoner of the moment, not that I have 10 teams off the top of my head that I would put ahead of the Padres. But when you drop a series to the Cincinnati Reds, that's a critical series. In a really important time of the season. And that follows where you're got swept by the Tampa Rays, which could happen. I suppose, although they're not playing all that well. And then you lose a series at home to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

3:02And it wasn't that long ago that you lost two out of three to the Mets. I understand that people are down on the Padres right now. I mean, they're down on the Padres here. So I certainly can appreciate that people around the league might be down on them as well. When I put 10 teams ahead of them, probably not. Just based on name brand recognition, who they still have on this team. And some of the players who are actually performing, but it's not been a very inspiring stretch for the, for the friar. So that is for sure. Yeah, I mean, I had the, I had the conversation of the red socks, the white socks and the guardians and Padres were 11. So they didn't make my top 10. But with that, is this team good enough to be a top 10 team? I don't care about power rankings and all that stuff in this case. I'm saying, are they good enough when you say you're going to overtake the Diamondbacks, which I think they are to make the playoffs. And then when they're in, are they good enough to be considered in the upper echelon?

4:04The top five teams in the playoffs looking at possibly an NLCS type of matchup with whoever comes through the rest of the NL. I don't think it's obvious that they are, but it's one of those you get into the postseason. And maybe Michael King goes on a heater, maybe Casey May starts to figure it out. Maybe Robbie Ray gets going again, and they have a bullpen, right? That is nasty even if it's shown some, so a couple of weaknesses over the last few weeks. More a home gets touched up. Mason Miller has gone back to back games and Tampa. So these are things that we're not used to. We haven't seen them throughout the span of the season. And the thing about the Padres that's been true is when their hitting's going good, it feels like the pitching tails off. When the pitching's going great, it feels like the hitting's not existent. So you know, this is, it's not been a fluke that this team has lost as often as it has over the last couple of weeks. Everything has seemingly synced up to go wrong at the same time. The starting pitching hasn't been great.

5:05It's been okay. The bullpen has shown just a couple of dips in performance. The base running's been bad. The execution's been bad. And they're also dealing with some injury and they're trying to figure out, you guys were just talking about show Hey, O'Tonney and how it is that you use show Hey, O'Tonney. By the way, we had a will-carol on today from injury territory. Wow, like interesting stuff about O'Tonney and the neck that people can find. But we have this conversation about Manny because Manny's got like five different things going on. He's got feet problems. He's got Achilles problem. He's got a back problem. His finger is all jacked up now. So he's wearing a sleeve on his finger. You can see sometimes, you know, when he falls it off off the end of the bat, you know, he just, you can see how much pain he's in. And that's unusual for a player like Manny who's so good at projecting strength all of the time. So, you know, Art, can you, can you get by without him? Probably not. You know, they didn't play Manny in that final game in Cincinnati and, you know, looked ugly. Looked just like bad.

6:05Looked uninspired. And then you have to move pieces around because there's no natural player to play third in his absence. And now for an Hanna-Tati's junior comes in and he's playing second, you know, like a lesser outfielders going to write. So it's just like all of these dominoes. And, and, you know, these are the things that we were talking about here as well. Like, you know, is the injury stuff just going to be too much for them to overcome? We're still trying to figure out. Let's go on out with Musgrove and Povetta. You know, there's an update, a little bit of an update on that from the general manager this morning. But I, you know, if this team could actually, and it's a huge F, right? You don't want to get an ifs with 22 games to go during the regular season. But if this team could actually just align itself somehow, yeah, I mean, I, I think that maybe that would be a team that you wouldn't want to see in October if it could get its act together. But that's a massive if at this point, you know, like best case in our, yeah, everything lines up and they could be dangerous, especially in a short series with that nasty bullpen. But, you know, it's a big F and we got to get there first.

7:05Yeah, I, I got a two question or four. And one hopefully takes about 10 seconds. It hopefully it's not a paragraph long. But I'm curious about why AJ Preller has a problem with Kratzu. Was there something that I'm missing? No, I don't know that it's Preller. I, yeah, Preller's got a legion of defenders here. A lot of his sick of fans out here. So, you know, every once in a while, I think Kratz has thrown out. Why is Preller having gig? Have any more managers as he get again? So, you know, these clips make the rounds out here. People are very engaged on social media. I don't have never heard of Preller's show anything. Now, Preller, I think actually enjoys a bit of the banter. I've never known him to shy away or or take any of that stuff to, you know, I grew up listening to New York sports radio. So, I think he actually kind of gets a kick out of being in the middle of some of these subjects. And AJ knows that I can beat him one-on-one. So, that's why he still likes me. Yeah. Lots of people around town claim that too. Yeah. They get up for these four amp basketball games and have his number for sure. Incredible. And then now my next question.

8:07Fernando Tatez Jr. Like, think about where he started. You know, not being able to hit a home run. And now he's on the premise of getting 20 home runs and probably over, you know, close to 80 RBI. He's talking about him and, you know, he had the hard hits. He was hitting the ball hard and now talking about batting 284. Like, he's putting up some numbers that I would probably take every year if I was playing. Yeah. And, you know, it sounds, you know, it just sounds dangerous. You know, when the ball pops off the bat. Now, I don't know what the difference is. I don't know when it clicked exactly. Because even after he hit his first, he kind of went into hibernation a little bit there. But, yeah, I mean, it's much better to see this version of Fernando than what was going on here for the first three months of the regular season where people were trying to convince themselves that, you know, the singles hitting Fernando Tatez Jr. was enjoyable to watch. I mean, just it wasn't. You know, like, that's not the Fernando that they invested in. They invested in Fernando who, you know, runs around, makes amazing catches like he did at city field.

9:12You know, who's a threat to hit 450 feet every time he's in the batter's box. So what exactly click form? You know, only he really knows, you know, there's been lots of conversations about the hitting staff, the approach here in San Diego, about a first year hitting coach. Maybe it just took a little bit of time for everybody to understand the message or, you know, maybe it's just Fernando kind of figuring things out himself. But, you know, there's nothing quite like watching Fernando. You know, I mean, I think he truly has much of a saying this. For me as a viewer, for me as a fan of baseball. There's just not many players like him, you know, I do think he is in that rarefied air where we're talking about players like Trout in his prime and show, hey, O'Tani, where he's much watch television. He's just box office. And, you know, he wasn't bad necessarily, but he just, you know, he was ordinary. He was pedestrian when the first three months of the season rolled through. And this is much better. And, you know, now he's, you know, he's running, he's doing, he's, you know, he's a threat everywhere. He goes, he's just irresistible again.

10:12And, you know, that's the kind of Fernando Tatis Jr. that people believe in. And, you know, hopefully we continue to see it throughout the span of the regular season. But I will 10 times out of 10, you know, believe that this is, this is the player that he has to be mentally, you know, emotionally. You know, I think this is who he, he has to be to even look in the mirror. This is what he expects of himself is to be one of these unicorn type baseball players. The one thing I wanted to make a comment on and see if you see it going that way for the rest of the season and into the playoffs is Manny and the way the team hits are a direct parallel correlation. July, his best month, the team's best month hitting was July. When he's down, it seems like the team is down. Is there something to that and is there something that Craig Stamman could do in the sense of seeing? Hey, you know what Manny's not swinging it? Maybe we move him from a two spot to a four spot, three spot to a five spot. Or is that never going to happen? He is penned in when he prints out that lineup card in one spot in the lineup and not really going to change that.

14:26Well, this is why Craig Stamman was brought in. This is part of the rationale, right? As surprised as everybody was locally and nationally that Craig Stamman became the manager of the Padres, former relief pitcher who was working in the front office who said publicly he didn't really even want this job. Didn't want to be considered for it and then he got it and one of the strengths. Although it was asked is this going to be a strength or is this going to be a weakness, but one of the things that was asked was you are a former teammate of these guys. You know, it's not that long ago that you were playing with him and you were a leader inside of the clubhouse as a player. What kind of leader can you be and it was believed that Craig Stamman would be able to talk to Manny on this level and say, you know, if something needs to be done, I will convince you that you should be taking more days off. Now we're at a point in the season where. Should you shouldn't you? I think you can make the debate either way, but you know, this is exactly why this manager was brought in here. Manny still is leading the team and home runs runs bad at him, right?

15:26Although people are gaining on him and whatever it was that he was doing with that swing coach in the offseason, it took him a little while to get on wound from that. You know, now the rigors and the wear and tear of the regular season seem to be the main issue, but. This is this is supposedly one of the strengths and one of the reasons why you thought Craig Stamman would be a good manager is because he could have those on his conversations with Manny Machado and Manny Machado would respect him in a way perhaps that he wouldn't respect. Somebody who hadn't played the game right and we've had a couple of those types of managers roll through here over the last couple of years. So you know, if it's not going to be Stamman who can convince him of that if in fact that's the best thing for the organization again that's sort of a debatable point. Then then I you know, I don't really I think you you know, you're sort of are going back on what it was that you believe Craig Stamman could deliver as the coach here as the head as the manager here was those types of on his conversations that the players would respect because they know where it's coming from. They know it's coming from Craig Stamman and and that's their former teammate and somebody who's got all these years of experience that they all respected so.

16:31He hasn't done it you know, Manny's had a couple of more days off during the regular season than perhaps he has normally he's mostly bad at I think second or third. I don't have it in front of me I don't think he's bad at fifths since like 2024 I want to say and Mike Schultz for a season so you know it's mostly been exactly where Manny is and I think what what Craig Stamman says is you know this is justifiable because he's still leading my team in important categories. And you know as former pictures with what might suggest even if it's not going well for Manny Machado it's still Manny Machado and you still know that name in the middle of the lineup so not going great but he's still a threat and I think pictures probably still respect that it is who he is and. I don't really know where this goes for the rest of the regular season with him but I don't love their chances without him for sure. I love I love these conversations because we just got done talking about Dave Roberts and the tough decisions and conversations he has to have with their star show hey Otoni two teams same division some would say the rivals other teams would say they're not but it's managers needing to make decisions and like you said it's those conversations I got to go to the rotation though.

17:47I got to go to this rotation is this rotation set up to be enough and I say that because of what the bullpen is and should be in the playoffs is this rotation enough for them to make it worth it for the Padres to make it in and make a deep rock. So King we would say for sure no doubt about it's staff ace right whether we want to put him up there in the ace category with with other aces around the sport is probably a different conversation but he's the staff ace of this team for sure so you're just going to say in Inc Michael Kings a guy and you're going to figure out what it is behind them they went out made trades for Casey mice for Robbie right Casey mice hasn't clicked how to bad one and Cincinnati's had a couple bad ones how to couple clunkers here. I understand that Casey mice as a player who sort of routine oriented maybe takes a little while to settle in for him you know new catcher he was at the same organization for five years same pitching coach for five years same manager etc so throw a new catcher who he came up in the minor leagues with now all the sun he's thrown to three different catchers here in San Diego including a rookie in Ethan Salas so it feels like like this is taking this adjustment period is taking maybe a little bit longer than some people would have liked and we've seen that here.

19:05Josh Hader got traded here back in 2022 and they removed him from the closer role because he was a routine oriented guy in his routine change so he ended up going back to the closer role and it finished fine you know that's taking a little while and and you know Robbie Ray is okay Randy Vazquez has been a blessing Randy Vazquez has really been a blessing Walker Bueller who's going tonight against the Yankees I think doesn't get enough attention he doesn't get enough credit for what he has done and when you look at the game started when you look at the innings pitched you know he's right there he's second in everything he's just been terrific for a guy that was picked up off the scrap heap and you know we thought a bit of dumpster diving from Preller I mean he's been terrific what role would he have if he went into October I mean that's a fascinating question isn't it and of course we've all been waiting for Musgrove to get back and we've always thought that it was going to be Musgrove who we would see first and not Pavetta but Preller went on the flagship radio station today and Musgrove has had he didn't want to call a setback but you know I feel like like he's back in rehab

20:05in the rehab program because he's not recovering in time between these starts and you know he doesn't feel like like the recovery between starts is good and he said but Nick Pavetta could be on this roster sooner rather than later and he's at Peckle Park so like does that mean he's going to get activated here over the next couple of days I guess we'll find out you know could one player emerge in a short series and then you kind of piece it all together I think but who is that I mean can Casey Meyers get back to being the pitcher that the Padres thought they traded for from Detroit with the sub three ERA you know who had finally kind of figured things out in his career you know that's that's the one to me I'm like is that going to happen for him is there enough time for this to happen because here we were just happy this conversation like is you know when Musgrove comes back who's he replaced and a lot of people around here thought he said it'd been Casey Meyers who the Padres you know paid for you know they traded significant pieces for I wasn't so sure about that I wasn't sold on it but you know it's as good an answer

21:07as you could have here I mean Randy Vask has you kind of you know I've had this up and down see a starter and then they were using openers and then he was out of the bullpen and then he wasn't even here for a while like he's come back he's been one of the best pictures that they've had over the last few weeks so you trust him in a big spot and Robbie Race just you know he's good you know he's been good so it's a long-winded answer and it's just you know would one of these guys show up and can one of these guys emerge as the logical choice to pitch behind Michael King I suppose that's probably what the next 22 games are are going to show us you know if not we've seen Craig Stammard to the whole chaos baseball thing before I it's not exactly what your approach was at the trade deadline that we'd be having this conversation but you know I I've always liked Randy Vask as I feel like I'm in the minority about that I'd like Walker Bueller others would say hey listen I you know I just can't wrap my mind around it but yeah the reason why they went out and got two of those guys was because they weren't sure about Musgrove Povetta and I were still unsure about Musgrove suggested in the local newspaper he might not pitch again during the regular season

25:25they'd rather yeah I think they could problem during the regular season but if you're trying to prepare for a short series right like if you can plan like the final series of the year I'm sorry I tied to K.O. yeah the final series of the years against the diamondbacks you know let's say that's for the final one point while car's pop and you could make wave a magic wand and say well who who do I want to line up against the diamondbacks in this three game series at the end of the year you would obviously say king yeah but who would you then say afterwards yeah I don't know I mean it would be such an interesting conversation to have but if you could you know if you could see that up exactly how you wanted it I think the diamondbacks probably have an idea what they would want to do and I think the potteries would would have a lot of long conversations into the evening there would be their playoff before the playoff series they're being amped up yep last question here for me I'm doing the games this weekend as well with in the yes network here I want to talk a little bit out the Padres Yankees talk about what you think how the series is going to go and what you know who's going to win this series what's going to what's going to make or break each team and win

26:27in this series or at least Padres yeah I mean they've you know they've I mean they've played well against the American League although you wouldn't know it based on the results against Tampa they are going to see a former player of theirs and Max Fried another former player of theirs and Trent Christian so you know it's it's sort of become a thing around the Padres that former players always come back to haunt them especially in big spots it's you know the energy is going to be off the charts people have had this series circle for a long time I would expect that after an off day for the club and an off day for Manning Machado in the A. L. East against an A. L. East opponent which is where he came up in his career it's going to be Bueller tonight it's going to be Ray and then Michael King on Sunday pitching against his former team you know they've they've they've got to hit man like they just have to hit they have to execute they have tried some things execution-wise bunting trying to bump or runners over extra inning games they've looked real sloppy they just got to tighten things up they've just got to be the best versions of themselves not just because it's

27:29the Yankees and its national television and Todd Frazier's on the call but because you know this is their season on the line you know this is literally their season and and you know it's fair to wonder if something is is broken internally based on the results of three series that I started the show talking about which you know it's the meds the pirates and and the reds like you know you just can't get over that red series like how do you show up like that you know they win the first game with Michael King and then they just lay two massive eggs over the next couple of days so you know can they pick themselves up off the ground they've done it all season long there have been plenty of times where where you know not just nationally locally people have kicked dirt on this team and thought that was it pull the plug on them they're they're done and you know maybe the pavetta news gives them a little bit of an emotional lift whereas I thought that the muskrow of news was going to be an emotional let down but you know this is what they this is what their front office set up this is what these guys claims they've wanted they they love you know playing that you guys have been talking bad about us all season we're going to prove it wrong they
