You are locked on Auburn, your daily podcast on the Auburn Tigers. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
Yes, welcome on in the Lockdown Auburn, your daily Auburn Tigers podcast. I'm Zach Blackerby, he's Lindsay Crosby. Auburn Baseball walks off Texas four to three, and what was arguably one of the biggest Friday night matchups in the history of Auburn Baseball. And Lizzie, it felt like they were losing their grasp a little bit, but that's why you play every single inning. And this team in this lineup, they're not going to give up until they have every single out. Oh my goodness, what a freaking finish. I'm going to say this, it's going to sound kind of... Snarky of me. The baseball gods pay attention. The baseball gods pay attention, Aiden Robbins is having the game of his life. It's the first time in his career that he has had two home runs in a game.
And what does he do when he hits the second one? He shushes everybody. He goes to the student section as he runs by, he shushes them, he shushes the crowd as he runs by. And the baseball gods said not so fast. Well, that's what he did. What did he not do, Lizzie? He did not get that shallow liner into center field. It... Okay, it... Being serious now, it really looks like he took his eyes off of it and looked up to check the runner. Right. To know, am I going to the cutoff guy or am I going home? That was the mistake that he made. And because of it, and this happens sometimes at Auburn with this grass, these... The balls can sometimes, because of the spin, they can just kind of die and skid and that's exactly what happened under the glove all the way to the wall. Auburn had already scored the winning run, I'll get that in a second, pinch runner.
By the time the ball hit the cutoff man. And it was... Like the longest roll ever and with what was on the line and all those runners just run in the base. It's like... Because it's... Okay. We're going to score one. Will we score two? And then it's like when it got out of his gloves, like, we're going to win. Yeah. I was expecting to play at the plate on like his throw would have had to have been on like on a line. But based on where everybody... It looked like everybody was. He should have... It should have been a close play at the plate and it would either would have been tied or that had been an out. We just don't know yet. And instead, he misses it, it rolls to the wall, shout out, and I don't know exactly who it was. The coach of staff in general can just get this shout out for putting tie Thompson in as a pinch runner. Okay. And I had somebody, maybe it was on the barn, somebody was like, why would you pinch run the guy at first base?
Because you were down by two. That was the winning run. That's why you do it. That's why you do it. You don't like the winning run is the one where you like to say about him. He is the fastest. Why do you don't canvas? Yeah. I don't think you can say that. But that's okay. Yeah. That's okay. That's okay. Incredible. Incredible finish. And like, as electric as that was, it kind of takes away from how incredible Jake Marciano was, I mean, he was unbelievable. Garrett Brewer ironically gets credit for the win in this. And I mean, he was pretty shaky, like, let's just be honest here, but Jake Marciano remind me to get you up in the wins and losses, but he was unbelievable tonight. Remind me to get to the Garrett Brewer thing in a second. Like that's the second straight outing we've seen where he's been a little bit shaky. Yeah. Combine that with having lost, you know, one of your, your relievers, a little reason to be concerned. I personally, I understand why they didn't keep jet Johnson in for a second inning.
I would have rather done that. I would have rather let him keep going, but they said, hey, we've got the, you know, the top of the order coming up, including this center fielder who's already tagged us once. And they were hoping it would work out. It did not work out. But you, you got it despite Garrett Brewer. The game was, when we get to the very beginning, right, the game was exciting. The game was a great pitching duel. I have a lot of thoughts on what these two pitchers did and kind of how they did this. But honestly, this is kind of a bail in Auburn out thing. The Tigers had a lot of opportunities here to score runs and just weren't able to get it done. Yes. But, but, and I saw somebody make this point in the chat. They kept battling the entire game. Yeah. Texas never felt comfortable, right? I mean, especially, especially at the end, because, yeah, I mean, Auburn was in scoring positions, several innings in a row, and it's just they couldn't capitalize and then,
I mean, Texas was pretty comfortable, was comfortable enough. Robbins was comfortable enough to taunt the crowd on the second home run. Baseball got paid attention to that. He was not going to even watch the baseball on the final play. He was confident enough to look away from it. And that's why it comes at you quick. It comes at you quick, though. It does. I mean, what a freaking finish. I mean, all the national college baseball accounts are just posting it like just, what else could you ask for? I mean, in living up to the billing of, all right, it's one nothing for forever. Okay. Okay. Let's see what happens. And then like, man, all the action that happened in the night, Texas getting to kind of feels like it's over. Auburn loads the bases. Texas has to change bitching and then, you know, Bristol Carter says, I don't care about you or your feelings. I care about. Auburn Carter is a liar. That's a lie here. It's done. Whoo. Bristol Carter is a liar, but jokingly said that on Thursday, talking about would we see
Bristol this week? And it's like, well, he's been saying that he's good to go and he's not been good to go. And he jokingly caught him a liar. But, um, you know, and he said like they didn't know if he'd play or not, depending on how things went last night. But not only did he play, he's a liar, but he's also a dog. Yeah. And, you know, just your job and he did the right, your job is to get the ball in the air. Put it in the plate. Get it to play in the air. That's all you got to do. He did both. You got literally the best possible outcome from that. You kept battling. That's all you got to do. Incredible. Incredible. Outing. All right. Chat, argue, who's player of the game? Bristol Carter, Jake Marciano, someone else. Let us know. That's next. Right here. Unlocked. Auburn. Izzy Crosby joining me Auburn defeats Texas four to three and walk off fashion. What a battle. What a moment and our guys just seemed comfortable the entire time kept battling. This is a really good baseball team Lindsey Crosby. This is a really good baseball team. Who would you give before we talk about what this means for the rest of the series because I'm going to quote you refer to something you said in a second. Okay. But player of the game, Jake Marciano, Bristol Carter, who are you going with? If you were picking two, it would be Carter. I'm asking you if Marciano is Paul Lindsey Crosby.
I'm willing to bet you that the program will put out that Bristol Carter is the player of the game. But I personally am giving this to Jake Marciano. Oh, you're the interesting one. Do we give it to Robbins as Madness says in the chat? I think technically we give it to the baseball gods for making him make the error because he got too cocky. But for me, it was Jake Marciano because I mean, Texas, just like Texas, Texas is a very good lineup. And not only did he hold them to one run, he held them to two hits in seven innings. I mean, one of one of one of the best teams in college baseball, number two, entering this game, he held them to two hits across seven innings. Now one of the hits was a home run, but you know, 98 pitches, 64 strikes. The thing that impressed me a lot about Jake Marciano, he's not, I call these those guys
stuff monsters, right? The Friday night guys that are pumping high 90s and all of that, he's not that. He's throwing 90, 91 with the fastball, but he did a really good job of changing mixing up velocities and mixing up changing the eye level of the hitter, right? He'd have a fastball up. He'd go to that change up down. He'd flip a breaking ball in there and then he would kind of be going up and down and up and down, changing velocities, changing speeds. And just the Texas hitters were never really comfortable outside of that one kind of middle, middle fastball that got blasted other than that, they just were never really comfortable. And that's like it's, we've seen pitchers with much better stuff, struggle to contain a lineup, the way that Jake Marciano did tonight. And if he doesn't do that, then you're not in a position to get the walk off because you're down.
Texas has put plenty of teams down by four or five runs early in a game, gig me, she honest said, no, not doing that. Yeah, I mean, Texas is absolutely loaded that and that kind of seems to be a theme of what we've heard throughout the season. I mean, even going into the season, they're like, oh, well, there's Texas, oh, well, there's Arkansas, oh, well, there's Mississippi State, oh, well, there's LSU and Vandy. Yeah, those are all good. And it's like, yeah, we'll see what Auburn can do. Yeah. You've seen other teams lose games or not supposed to lose series or not supposed to, or I mean, if you're LSU, just totally fall off the map. I don't know what they done today, but going into this weekend, it was crazy. Well, they let Vandy do to them. And you've seen it like, okay, well, now it's Texas and Auburn and Mississippi State. We'll see what happens there. And at some point, at some point, you got to look at what Auburn's doing pitching and then just the different guys stepping up at different times where at some point, you've got to start looking and saying, yeah, you know what?
Maybe Auburn is legitimate. Maybe Auburn does have the pieces to compete. And tonight proved it, tonight absolutely proved every bit of that. I think unless Auburn gets beaten both of the next two games, they're going to come out of the weekend, number one in RPI, which we'll tell everybody, hey, this is arguably the best team in the country. And, you know, things like this, like the wins, the win as far as RPI is concerned. I think you're going to see that. And like some of the people who are a little bit fan-dual has Auburn tied for eighth best odds to make the college world series. That's going to go up. If you, this exact did not tell me to do an extra ad for a free end duel, but if you want some value, go get Auburn before that plus 2,200 changes. Like seeing the Tigers not hang with the big boys, hang with the teams that everybody has kind of anointed as some of the best teams in college baseball.
Seeing Auburn do it, you're going to see more and more of this. You're going to see more and more conversation about how Auburn has legit. You hang with the big boys long enough and start beating the big boys. You look around and you say, oh, that's us now. That's us. What's the basketball thing? The blue blood? Yeah. Which Thompson has a blue blood? I think so. I think so. I'm going to refer to something you said. I don't know if it was when we were talking about Texas after we swept Missouri last week or after we dismantled Georgia Tech. Not sure. But you talked about Texas and what that means. And when you were talking about, okay, the matchup and the ins and outs of it all, you said, yeah, they're Friday guys legit and goodness was he? He didn't have his first three ball count until the seventh inning. Yeah.
What? That's absurd. And I saw people complaining about our offense as like, stop. This guy is so good. Yeah. But I mean, just to refer to what you said, it's like, if you can get through him, you have a shot. And I got through them, they got through the part of the weekend is behind you. And yeah, I think Marciano is our best guy, but goodness gracious. You look at who we're trying out tomorrow, one, you know, SEC pitcher of the week, not too long ago. Yeah. No, to strike out a few guys. And no, because they're the same for Sunday. So I want to refer back to what you said about that and kind of, you know, let's continue having that conversation. Yeah. I will give them credit real quick. Dylan Volantis is on Sunday. They're doing with him kind of like we used to do with Joseph Gonzalez, where we would have him go on Sunday, even though he was arguably our best pitcher, because we wanted to make sure we could walk down the series. Same idea there. He's also really, really good.
The Saturday guys, the weakest of the three. But with Rio Hoss, what I was, you can tell that Texas did extra prep for Auburn. He went outside of the things he normally does. I saw some of the scout reports about what he's going to do. The splitter was not a very big part of what he normally does on a weekend. He changed what he did today to try to get an advantage against Auburn to kind of catch them unprepared. And you saw after those two doubles, Auburn really struggled for, I want to say three or four innings at just like second inning was, if I remember right, ground out, strike out, ground out. Third inning was, but single, field or choice, strike out, strike out. Fourth inning was ground out, ground out, flag like Auburn struggled to adjust to that thing that he did. But because Chris Rembert and Jason Frailick jumped on him early, you were doing that with a one run lead until they got that home run.
And then again, you once you got him out of the game, which that's what we talked about. It is pitch count up, get him out of the game. He was at 90, I think 99 pitches in the seventh, which is great by him. That was not as high of pitch, not as soon as I thought we were going to be able to do it. But when they got him out right there, you got three runs of the night to win the whole thing in the bullpen when they had to go to another reliever in the bullpen. I will say the jet Johnson thing, I still Garrett Brewer, I mentioned it earlier, doesn't necessarily have his best stuff right now. I don't know what's going on. But either way, you won the game. It's hard to be too mad about the way this went, but I can still complain about the top of the night, the way that that went. One pitch for a homer, you walk a guy on four straight. He gets to second on a pick off that you mess up. He goes to third on a bulk. You can't be doing that. And then he scores on a fielder's choice where Eric Avara falls as he's trying to make a throw.
Yeah. You shouldn't have given up two runs there. I don't know if you have jet Johnson in there. If you give up those two runs, Brewer was clearly shook a little bit. Yeah. I mean, do you do you have the conversation about Garrett Brewer if you're butch Thompson at this point or do you just kind of let it play out? I mean, because butch will let it play out with some guys and he's usually right when he does that. I think right now you still have the ability. You have enough guys that you can go to where you don't necessarily need to make a change yet. At the same time, I don't know if we'll see him the rest of the weekend and that's nothing against what he did. I mean, he threw close to 20 pitches. You might see him in game three, but I do think Auburn's going to try to get to some other guys. They've been working on L.J. Kormier getting the freshman more comfortable. He wasn't a lot of blowouts. He does need more leverage opportunities. He was ready against tech. Earlier this week wasn't a close game to like Auburn just hasn't had a lot of those close
games. And so I think he's ready for that. But you saw the first guy they went to out of the pin was jet Johnston. It wasn't Garrett Brewer. They were saving Brewer, I guess for the night. Again, I probably would have liked to see jet do two innings there. Ryan Hetzler. You still have Ryan Hetzler. I talked to him on Thursday. You know, they're they're kind of rallying behind. Hey, we lost him. You remember of our bullpen? We're going to keep working. We're going to keep going. But I do think you've got to identify who the guy is, right? If jets now in the high leverage, great. You got him. You got Hetzler. Is Kormier that third guy? I don't know. And I think they need to figure that out. I think we'll find out tomorrow unless it's a blowout, we'll figure out what's going on there. But I have noticed they've liked to hold Hetzler for game two. They've kind of given Brewer game one and Hetzler game two. I'm assuming that's why they didn't go to him tonight. I'm starting to wonder about like if if Auburn had the lead for the night, would they
have gone to Hetzler versus it being a tie game and them choose and it's pole jet and go with Brewer? There was a question in the chat about why they didn't put in Hetzler. I think that's probably why they didn't have a lead going to the night. Yeah. Yeah, I saw that too. But all in all, thankfully, I mean, you take it, you take it. We finally sink our TV's up, so we were watching here in the room waiting for the game to end. Oh, that was so fun. Celebrate the same time. That was so fun. Unbelievable. That was amazing. Unbelievable. Anything else we want to touch on from this one? I mean, Auburn's in a great spot to win this thing, obviously, it does seem like they're their best shot of winning the series as tomorrow. So we'll see. And then if you go up to, oh, house money and yeah, yeah, everything on top of that is just, it's just icing on the cake at that point. But the one thing I do want to point out is brain and macrame having that one downside
in the first place. Stop doing that. What are we doing here? But he stayed in the game. I don't think he looked awesome in that last at bat, right? We'll see if he wakes up sore or something. If he, you know, sometimes that happens, the adrenaline's going, you're able to stay in the game. But the next day, you're a little bit sore, you're a little bit tender. They might want to hold you a little bit. So we'll see what happens tomorrow. If he's not in there, it's because of something like that. And it's just, hey, like we will, we'll figure it out. We didn't have him at shortstop for the first half of the schedule and we did okay. That definitely something to watch for because he is one of the better hitters on the team. The game is at six tomorrow, but they're having that block party outside of the stadium couple hours before. So you guys are three. So if you want to make a full day of it inflatables and food trucks and stuff, that should be pretty fun. How many is there anybody tonight on that food truck? How many dents you think of, how many dents you think those food trucks come out of this
game with? Because they're going to be there when the game starts. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. A decent amount. One, I would guess anybody in the lineup that kind of went over today that either surprised you or you're concerned with Bob Terrell, Eric Kavara or Brandon McRain, anybody that went over that you're like, that's surprising or concerning. I wouldn't normally be concerned with one game, but Bob had three strikeouts. He's the only guy who struck out more than once. Bob had a moment late, too, where I really would have, yes, that he was going to like take advantage of it. He typically does. Yeah. And he didn't tonight on characteristic for him. I don't necessarily know. I didn't see anything from watching that stood out to me as like mechanics being off or anything. I think a lot of what he ends up doing is Bob kind of combines taking advantage of mistake pitches with having a good idea of what you're doing and being prepared to attack you. And when you saw that that Rio Hoss was doing different stuff than the scouting report,
I think that might be why he was a little bit iffy on, you know, some of those at bats simply because he had prepared a game plan for himself based on the scouting report. And then Rio Hoss deliberately changed what he did to try to catch Auburn off guard and it worked against Bob. Not concerned about it, per se, but I just I did notice really kind of struggling with that splitter. He's never been go with off speed anyway, but how to throw it a splitter is a filthier version of an off speed, don't necessarily love that. So can you think of a better ending like in the last few years of Auburn baseball than what we just saw? I'm having a hard time thinking we've had we've had some walkoff homers. I think Bryson where had a massive walkoff bomb that like hit the power substation a couple years ago. Yeah. This was, but it's more exciting than a like a home run though. Yeah. Because of the way that it played out. Yeah. Like, okay, we might tie it. Wow. No, we're going to win because you're a dummy like they're like multiple moments in the play that were worth celebrating.
This makes that play stretched out way too long. I was like three different moments in one. Yeah. I also kind of want to give some blame here to the corner outfielders because the guy who eventually got that ball, what's the center of fielder? None of the corner outfielders had come far enough over to try and help. And really the left fielder is probably crashing down to help if there's a pass ball at third base or something. But the right fielder didn't get over and do kind of do as part of the help back that up. So. Oh, well. Guess what? I hate this. I hate it. But at the same time, Zach, you'll love to see you love to see it. You'll have to see it. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Auburn takes down Texas. Number four Auburn takes down number two Texas. Yes. Right after they took down number three Georgia Tech or to three, they play again tomorrow with six and then Sunday at two is the current schedule. And so I saw somebody in the chat asked about the MIT game. That is Sunday night at five. Three.
Bring us to UCLA. Sorry. You've beaten number three tech and number two Texas. Give us number one UCLA. We want UCLA. Nobody's ever chanted that in any sport before. No, I don't think so. Swimming maybe. Swimming. It's incredible running basketball way back in the day. But I don't know if we were chanting things that I don't know now.
