It lets judges hate criminals with extra prison time if they skip their own sentencing hearings. This came straight from the fight by Cheryl Corbal. Mom of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt Corbal, murdered in her Liverpool home on August 22nd, 2022. The killer, Thomas Cashman, refused to show up in court for his sentencing last year. He got life with a minimum of 42 years for gunning down Olivia while chasing a drug dealer into her house. Cheryl wanted to look him in the eye during her impact statement, but he stayed down in the cells, acting like the coward everyone called him. Cheryl's push turned into a full campaign, backed by family, friends, and even the Olivia's butterfly foundation they set up. They did endless interviews, trips to Parliament, and rallies to make sure no other family misses that face-to-face justice moment. Folks are calling it a game-changer for putting victims first.

1:00Politicians jumped on board too. Back in January then, opposition leader Keir Starmer met Cheryl and promised action in the victims and courts bill. Now with the government, they fast-tracked it into the king's speech, making it law before summer. This law means judges can add years for no-shows or strip perks from lifers. Olivia's name lives on, ensuring cowards can't dodge the eyes of those they hurt, paving the way for real closure in courtrooms everywhere.
