4:03Starting center for the Seattle Seahawks. Jalen, welcome to the online committee, dude. Yeah, thanks for having me. Oh, dude. So, where are you right now? You've been all over the place. I've been trying to get you like, I'm driving through Minnesota in a snow storm. I'm down in Kansas. I'm back in Seattle. Where are you right now? Yeah. In Minnesota going over to Fargo. Okay. I'm going to do some fishing in Louisiana this weekend. And then going to drive back over to Seattle. I want to get back. Are you doing this? Are you driving all this? Not to Louisiana, but everywhere else. Yes, I've been driving. Yeah, I was about to be like in my brain. I was like, Fargo. How does North Dakota get to Louisiana and back to Seattle? Yeah, I don't really see it. A Lombardi strapped seat belt in the shotgun position there. Yes. No, I'm going to fly that one. But the rest I've been driving. Is there Louisiana? Is that an old line trip? No, just a couple of buddies from college. Going to go down there and do some red fishing.

5:03Are I going to red fish fishing? Yeah. What the hell is really fishing? I don't know. I've never caught one. Saltwater fishing, man. Salt water. Salt water. Salt water is different. Yeah. Did you guys even do so when you go as deep as you guys did and win the whole thing? Is there even a whole line trip? Or is everyone just like, I'm sick of each other? No. And I'll see you in April. After we won the NFC, we all went to each other like, ah, do we really want to like go somewhere after this? Like, we're about to be in a hotel for eight days together. Are you guys sure you want to go somewhere? We're like, ah, we'll just, we'll just donate it this year. So when you stay alive, that's memorable. And you donated it. But I'll be honest with you. It was different because if had you guys lost, you would have been like, we're for sure going on a trip. Believe me, I know. Because when we lost, we were like, fuck you, we're back on this trip, dude. Yeah. No, that's funny. Yeah. No, we all agreed beforehand. We weren't, we weren't going to go anywhere. So do we know where the money went? Or did someone just possibly walk off with all the money? Oh, you know, there's no receipts.

6:03I'm not really sure. Apparently we donated it. I don't, I guess I don't know for sure, but. There's no paper trails for that alike. And that means crossed money. It was like, my house. I'm in my house. Yeah. Yeah. No, it was sitting in one of the boys just been like, there was just, you know, $30,000 sitting. It was been my whole year. So. Okay. No numbers. No numbers. No numbers. Sorry, sorry. No, they didn't know. It's got donated. It's all right off. We thought it got donated. Not sure. Charitable. Charitable right off donation. So dude, what, I mean, just, this is the most like broad, obvious question ever, but. What's it like to be a freaking Super Bowl champion? I mean, it's awesome. It was super special, but, you know, the same, the same. I feel, I feel the same afterward. So, you know, it's just a, just the thing that I get to, you know, so that I did know. I think it's so funny because your second year, right? You're in your second year.

7:03You just finished your second year going into your third year. And I feel like if you ask a first year, a second year player, that question, it's kind of the same thing. Like, I'm just trying to still make it in this league. I'm still trying. But like, I try and think of a guy like Leonard Williams, right? Who's been on different teams, been on terrible teams, been on good teams. Like, what were some of the older guys' reactions to winning, to winning the whole thing? Yeah, they probably had more of an emotional, you know, feeling after, you know, winning the soup. Yeah, I mean, I'm trying not to, like, we were all trying not to take it for granted. Like, the young guys, but at the same time, it's like, we just got here. You know, it's like, I know, it's definitely different. You know, the older guys, obviously, have been, you know, dreaming of it for a long time. And, you know, then they finally get it and it's super emotional. And we just showed up and just, you know, played a really long season. So, you know, I think a lot of the younger guys, especially like Gray, we're just ready to do something other than football.

8:05So, I ran into Gray, voted on Super Bowl Week. I ran into Gray's, I was coming over to the team hotel. And like, it was him and his family, and I was just chatting with them. And I was like, dude, freaking Super Bowl, right? And he's like, yeah, I mean, I'm supposed to play in the, I'm supposed to play in the program, waste management last week. And like, I got to get to go. And I want to be like, I want to be like, shake it. And be like, what are you doing? You're super bowl, right? He's just like, it's just like, yeah, it's a rookie, right? Because you talk about that rookie grind and how long it is. And just going for essentially 14 months straight, like for those rookies, like, it's just a different build for those guys. And even for you, I mean, coming off a year where we told your story here, undrafted, fought your way on, now at the starting center. I mean, I would love for you to kind of tell your journey here too. We've touched on it on the show, but like, just talk a little bit about your journey from North Dakota State to maybe I'm going to go be a cop too. I'm going to go and now starting center in the Super Bowl. Yeah. Before I answer that, I want to know if Grace Able is played the most football

9:06in the span of like 15 months. Oh, he had to. Oh, it has to be. I mean, to go all the way to FCS national championship game, right? Right. Because I played like 15 or 16 games, right? Yeah, so they played like 15 games in college's senior year. And then you guys rolled into, you had the buy first week, right? Yeah. So then you went three in a row. So then another 20 games plus all the preseason. Yeah, I mean, he's probably played 40 plus games in the last. Did he play every every game the last year at NDSU? Did he play every game? Yeah. So it was, it was, I think it was 16 games. Yeah. It was 16 because the championship was January 6th against Montan State. Yeah. So 16 and then another 20. 20. 36. Did he play a preseason? He was a preseason. He played preseason. Of course he played preseason. He was a rookie. So you're talking about like senior bowl.

10:06Yes, senior bowl. Oh, my 30. It's like 39. Yeah. 39. 40 games. That's insane. His body has to feel like saying it. Is it? Hold on. I want to hear your answer to Jay's kind of journey question, too. Is it true that you, that, that Gray asked you to pop his thumb back in during the, during the schedule? That is true. I was like listening to the play and he is, yeah, I'm, can you, my thumb, can you put it back in? I'm like, no, I can't. I don't know how to do that. So I just grabbed it and like pulled. He's like, ah, did it go? No. This is like in the hut. This isn't on the side. This is in the hut. I want to do that. This is in the huddle. I have them trying to get the play. Yeah. I was like, I don't know how to do that. Chuck, you do it. Chuck, you do it. I guess he did it, too. So I don't know. But you just see a chuck just. Listen, just so you know in the future, a good pull out and slam in will always take care of something

11:08like that. I mean, I was there. I was just watching Gray keep like shoving it into the ground. I was like, what are you doing? And then I saw I'm like, hit Jalen. And Jalen's like talking to the right guard. Obviously, he's like, hey, you got to do something. And Gray is like tapping him. Like, can you pull my finger? You think? You think? You think? I just pulled it. Nothing happened. So I don't know. I gave it my best try. I don't know. I mean, I mean, you should feel honored. I mean, he's having this like crisis as the play clock is winding down in the Super Bowl. And he's looking for the person he trusts the most. And he's like, all right. My NDSU guy. Oh, dude. Your center's always. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The left. You can only trust the left tackle so far. Yeah. We're not with assignments. What do we do? Never mind. I'm not asking you. Hey, what do we do? What do we do? You're in the middle. It wouldn't have been a problem if the play wasn't like, we weren't about to get the play. And like, I'm going to have to tell them to play anyway. So. You can play another snap with your thumb hanging off by the side.

12:10We just need more. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. So wait. Yeah. To to Jeremiah's question. Yeah. You're you're journey going back and he referenced like you legitimately thought about. I guess I guess I might just go become a police officer. Like, can you take us back and kind of what you were going through? Yeah. I mean, even like before I met Jay, thinking about like whether I wanted to pursue professional football or not, it was like something I was really considering. Just because I knew like how much work it was going to be. So even going back to then, I really was weighing like whether I wanted to do it or not. And then, you know, obviously we decided that we wanted to do it in my life. And then we go to the East West shrine game and day one, all your surgery come home. Do surgery underneath. Sounds sounds good. We can we can get through that. We'll get it back. Do rehab. Get the surgery done. All right.

13:10We're going down to the combine. Just check on your foot. Still broke. Sir, go back to Minneapolis surgery. And then. Yeah, we went, went to the draft. Thing. Not a party. Boone said no parties. Yeah, but. Get together. You know, don't don't hear my name called. J is telling me like, yeah, well, you know, by the end of the, into the draft, like you'll know where you're going. Like, well, if you don't get drafted, we'll, we'll know where you're going. South ground comes nothing. 10 minutes after the draft. Nothing. 20 minutes out of the draft. Nothing. 30 minutes finally calls me. You're going to Cleveland. Like, aren't you excited? I'm like. I mean, yeah, I am. But also, like, like, I'm afraid. For 30 minutes, and I'm going to Cleveland. Okay. Pause.

14:10Pause. We're. So pause there. So from my end, usually the way undrafted for agency goes is, hey, we have something locked up. Ready to go pull the trigger and we're rolling. With Jalen's case, because of the foot, it was, it was like one team after another was just like medical, medical, medical, medical, medical, medical, medical. And we're calling and calling and calling, medical, medical, medical. And so I'm going, oh, my God, dude, like this might not happen. And finally, with the Browns out of my KL, we get through. And he's like, yeah, we want him. We want him here. Mind you, they had everything. We had given everything to the NFL teams. Hey, this is the timeline on his foot. This is when he's going to be back. This is when he'll be healthy. Browns knew all of that. They talked to his surgeon. And they were like, okay, we want him. And so I remember what I called Jalen, like, I was ecstatic. Because we had worked so hard to get it. We're like, we did it. Right. It was here in my basement in my house. We got it done. And so I remember when I called Jalen, I was like bouncing off the walls. Like, we got him a home. And then he's like, wait, I have to drive to where? We're like Cleveland.

15:10It's not that bad. It's just, it's just a skipping a job over to Ohio. They're in the NFL. They're in the NFL. They're in the NFL. They're real team. Yeah. Okay. Back to you. Yeah. Yeah. So, you know, I was in Missouri at the time. So drive back up to Minneapolis. Keep training and then go over, you know, to Cleveland and get there. Roll into the facility on my scooter. And they're like, you're on a scooter. Were you told you that? I was going to be on a scooter. And so then I'm like, you know, doing my, my check-in process. They're like, oh, yeah, go get your teeth checked and your eyes checked. And they don't have someone comes up to me and says, actually, you know what? Just, just wait before you, you know, go get your eyes checked. You can just pause that. Like, oh, that, that can't be good. I was like, what do you want me to do there? I call you. You can just go sit in the locker room. So I went in the locker room. You know, Matt James Winston. And then Jay calls me and said, yeah, you gotta, they don't want you anymore.

16:13You gotta, you gotta drop back. Like, oh, sweet. So then, you know, go back to Minneapolis. You know, do some driving for Uber. You know, make ends meet while we're while I'm training. Do a interview with a medical sales rep person told him, yeah, I got, I got one tryout with the, with the Seahawks. I'll let you know if it doesn't work out. And then flew out Seattle did the tryout got signs made the roster. And, you know, obviously, you know, made one of the starting jobs this last year. And the rest of history. Dude, my favorite, my, his day one of Jalen's training camp with pads on, he sends me a video. And he goes, dude, I had this one on one rep. And then like, everyone was patting me on the head like, dude, great job. And like, I didn't understand. And he said in this video of him locking down Byron Murphy. Like the number one pick from, from Texas the whole bit. And he's like, he had no idea because he'd never bid there.

17:13So he just walks up there, locks him down. And he's like, dude, everyone was like super excited. And I just like, one on one on one rep. I was like, dude, that's the first round pick. Like, that's a good thing. I have to say, this has always kind of been Jalen, right? Like anytime Jalen's in the gym, and we get super intense or like a fights breaking out, I would always look to Jalen to be like, how is he doing? He'd always just be like, all right, cool, let's do it, right? Like, one time we're, we're busted on him. And I was like, all right, chill out, hillbilly boy. And he's like, hillbilly. Parents are lawyers. I started dying. No, man. I was like, and then they tell me they're like, dude, this one time coach. Jalen got into a fight with the old line coach. It wasn't really a fight because the coach was yelling and out of nowhere. Jalen goes, I'll talk to you when you've calmed down. I was like, that is exactly what honestly. How amazing has that been able to have the personality like that? Like, that's the perfect center, right? Like, everyone's always kind of losing their fucking mind up front. But as long as the center can kind of get everybody together. And wrangle everybody up. He's kind of the voice of reason for everybody, right? So you have to feel like your personality fits in perfectly for that position.

18:15Yeah, I mean, I think so. I think that, you know, I hope the guys same calm and let them do the talking. I'll listen to the play and you can keep talking. I'll tell you as we're walking up to the line. What we're all doing. Yeah, I don't know. That's kind of always, you know, what I've been like. My dad is like that to the max. He shows no emotion. Nothing gets him round up. So I guess I get that from my dad. I will say this. T-Pain got in pretty riled up with that post game party though. He was, he was digging on some T-Pain at that Super Bowl party. T-Pain, you're T-Pain man, bro. He's the best, especially live. He's fucking awesome. Yeah. Not, not to rub salt in the wound here for old Macadak. But how was it with the transition of Sam Darnold coming in this year? I mean, obviously last year you guys had Gino. And then you had Darnold coming in this year. I mean, obviously last year you guys had Gino. And then you had, you know, Sam Hound. And you had some kind of rotating door there. Obviously Sam comes in this year off a great year with the Vikings. How did he assimilate in and kind of how did he help take you guys to that next level? Yeah, Sam was awesome.

19:16I mean, he's really like a true pro that gets along with everybody. All I knew was, you know, Smith before Sam, which, you know, nothing gets you know, they're just not the same like type of personality. You know, Gino kind of keeps to himself does his job. But Sam really connects with the with the guys and, you know, easy to talk to. And I think that's a big deal, especially like between the offensive line and the quarterback. Like being able to say, hey man, we can't hear your cadence. Can you talk louder with him being able to like, because they have so many other things that they're doing at quarterback. The last thing you want to hear is the offensive line telling you to speak up. So being able to like take something like that and just being like, oh, okay, I got you. It's like, I think, you know, really hard to do. And that's something that Sam is awesome about. Yeah, he seems, you know, from his year in Minnesota here,

20:16it seems like the locker rooms just love that guy. And it really, it was really cool to see, especially like, I mean, you've grown up in the social media age too. He was one of those dudes that got clowned and made fun of across social media for his first couple of years and people then form an opinion and to see him come around the other side and get another shot and then get a shot to start in Minnesota and then get another shot as a franchise guy in Seattle. Just what an awesome story. I mean, what was it like? I mean, you guys are celebrating yourselves as a team. And he was always kind of deflecting the Sam Donald story. But did it feel like that's a little extra special because that dude, he's a good dude and a good teammate. Yeah, Sam, Sam's kind of similar to me in that fashion where nothing really bothers him. I mean, we could, you know, even in that, that Rams game that, you know, we were down a bunch in the third, fourth quarter. Like it was just the same, the same thing that we've been doing.

21:16You know, no, emotions got involved. We were just going to, you know, keep getting it all and whatever happens happens and Sam's the epitome of that. So, you know, just to see him keep that poison all the way through the Sam Donald story was just, you know, really cool to be a part of. And, you know, obviously, like it's super special and, you know, everybody roots for an underdog story like that. So, yeah, it was, it was really fun to be a part of. I'll tell you what I had to be a fun part is the one two punch between Charbonne and K9. Now, I know you guys lost K9 and that might be a little hurtful, but at the same time, how much of this season do you guys think you're going to be able to run the ball as much as compared to last season? Yeah, I mean, those guys, they're awesome. K9 such a nice dude outside of football. I mean, he's, you know, you probably seen his personality more now at the Super Bowl and, you know, he's super quiet. But just a nice dude and Charbonne is honestly kind of somewhere.

22:19But, you know, having those guys back there, knowing that they're going to miss one. If you miss a block, like they're going to, they're going to make you right. They'll miss a guy for you. You know, it doesn't look as bad. Nobody's that upset. If you miss your block and then they're running back, you know, juke some out and, you know, takes it for 10 yards. It's, it's all good. But yeah, I mean, I, I'm sure whoever we get is going to, it's going to run hard. They know what they're doing is the front office. So we'll be good. Yeah, I mean, I have a lot of respect for that Seahawks front office. And I think something that, something that I don't know if I've ever remembered in Super Bowl history or even just modern football. History, you guys are bringing the entire offensive line room back. Like, not there isn't, there isn't a new addition in there. There isn't a subtraction in there. I mean, just talk about how special that room and kind of obviously JVB in the O'Line coach and had the chance to probably go with Kubiak to the Raiders and start there. But he chose to stay and be with you guys. Just talk a little bit how that room was this year.

23:19Having, you know, use a first year starter. Gray is a first year starter. Obviously, you have the tackles, but then you have so much like O'Lews in the room, Mason's in the room. You have all these guys and then have that whole crew be able to just run that back. Like, how special is that? Yeah, I get the hunch that that's like pretty important to the coaches is to have as many of the same guys they can. You know, that that are getting as many reps as you can get. I think that maybe comes from JV. I'm not sure. But JVB is an awesome O'Line coach. I mean, he truly is. He plays no favorites. He tells you exactly how he wants you to do it. It's his way or the highway. And he's going to let you know if he won't do it his way. And if you don't do it the next time, he's going to tell you again. And then he's going to tell you again. And he's going to tell you again. But there's no feelings involved. You know, he'll say his piece. And then, you know, the next rep, you could, you could have the worst rep. And he's ever seen in his life.

24:19And then the rep after that, you're the best football player he's ever seen. But as far as the guys, it really felt like college again, honestly, we were just all super close. We hung out a lot outside of the facility. We all played cards together in the preseason. You know, there wasn't like an odd ball guy that, you know, wasn't really involved with the group. It kind of felt like everybody was, you know, just a part of this thing. And we were all really good friends. So, you know, I think that played a big role. That's so important because Boone and I have talked about it on this show. Like so many different personalities can be in that room. And he clicks kind of just naturally form, not in like a bad way. But it's like, oh, this group, this group, this group. And when you can have a group, especially in the old line room, that is that close. Kind of like you said, nothing can penetrate that room. Right, you shut that door. Nothing comes in there. And you know, the whole bit there. And then I know that you guys did some really fun stuff with the rookies. Right, I mean, obviously having a rookie in your room. Right, talking about, hey, they had to tell the two rookies in your room.

25:20Right. You had to have jokes every day. I had to dress up for Halloween and get the dress the room. I mean, just that type of stuff just breaks up the monotony of such a long year. Yeah. Yeah, no, they all did a great job as rookies. They had to tell so many jokes. They not only had to tell a joke per day, but two jokes per day. One in the morning and one in the evening. And then also there is a board in the back of the room that lists the rank of the rookies on how good their jokes were every day. Mason told us and he was like, if you ever doubled up on a joke too, it was a fine. And you had to retell the joke. And I was like, oh, my God, this had to be it. He was like, dude, let me tell you something. You start to panic when you start thinking, shit, I need a joke. I didn't know it. I was like, dude, I couldn't imagine what that was like. One of the funniest things was the last meeting of the year, our last individual meeting before the Super Bowl were saying, whoever's at the bottom of the list has to be reworked next year.

26:21Because there's like six of them. And so the way it worked was like, if you were at third place, then the worst that you could possibly do was go down the fourth place. You can go as high as because each person would vote against the next person ahead of them. So the most you could do, if you were like in the third spot, the last meeting you were safe from being out of the bottom spot about being reworked next year. The only way that you could go to the bottom is if you retell the joke. So before this meeting, we all conspired against Mason that no matter what he said, we were going to say that he had told that joke again. Because Mason was in like the second spot or something. So we get in there and he starts, he starts telling a joke and Gray gives it away almost. He's like, oh, I don't know. We might have heard that like in the middle of his joke. So then Mason switches to a joke that actually had been told before.

27:25So Mason ended up at the bottom of the list. Oh my gosh. Did he get rewrooked? Yeah, allegedly. We'll see if it gets imporced or not. Hey, he's here right now. Tomorrow, I'm going to go in there because he was kind of claiming he was like, I'm done with all this rookie shit and all the vets here. Now we're like, you know, you got three games, right? We're making up carry all the pads and do everything. So now tomorrow, I'm going to be like number one lying fine. Now you've got to carry all the fucking equipment. Two practice and back to practice dude. It's going to be hold there. I'm still going to talk to me. Yeah. Yeah. I love it, dude. Relegation. Relegation. I love it. Many rewrooked dude. That's going to be one of the harshest things I've ever heard of in my life. It was just like one of the things that someone just thought of like two like the last week. We're like, oh, yeah, let's do that. That's an instigator fight for sure. Yeah. Oh, 100%. That's not 100%.

And they only announced one participating team, the Seattle Seahawks. It's normal because technically you guys are the throne, right? You hold the throne. And normally what they do is they do the super bowl thing. But I don't know that they're going to bring the Patriots back. Do you know that from winning the Super Bowl? How do you know that? No, we lost. Thanks, Dick. You're definitely you're definitely out. I'm not going to lie.

29:26And this is something that we were talking about before. But it's the same thing when we were talking to Mason when he got here this week. We were like, hey, what's it like? And he was like, I don't know. I'm a rookie. Like it's isn't this normal. And we were all the vets were like, shut the fuck up right now. Shut the fuck up. And it's one of those things where you guys are living this dream right now. And you're so young. But all of a sudden when it gets taken away from you, you're going to be like, well, at least we won it the first year or the second year we were there. You're going to be able to lean on it. But you'll realize how important it is because honestly, you're so right. Especially when you and Gray come from North Dakota, where all you guys do is fucking beat ass all year every year. And all of a sudden you turn right around and go to the NFL and beat everybody's ass. And you didn't just go in there and throw the ball. You guys beat the fuck out of people, which was fun to watch, right? Like we broke down a ton of film. But at the same time, all of a sudden one year, it's not going to be there. And you're going to feel like the rest of us and you're going to be like fucking son. They're running a back, dude. I believe you also Wednesday. Oh, Wednesday game. They're doing this now. Oh, yeah. I'm pretty sure I could eat like 50 tacos in one. Ooh. I just feel like when I eat tacos, they just like, you know, I don't get full very fast. I feel like I can crush tacos. 34:31Yeah. Or are we like making this taco the best? Yeah. No, the best are like some food truck tacos that are just like the steak and the onion, the cilantro and some really hot salsa. I want maybe you've been there. And I'm boony. I don't know if you have. So I lived in Seattle for a couple of years. My faith Seattle has like some sneaky good street taco places. Mm hmm. Laredos at the bottom of Taylor Street or Taylor Ave between Queen Anne like by Lake Union. Laredos, dude. Go get the Alpastore street tacos, cilantro, chopped up onions, unbelievable.
