Officer Saves Retired Sergeant in Off-Duty Heroism

Shelby County deputies and alabaster police came together Thursday evening to honor one of their own for quick thinking that saved the life. Officer Ian Hart was heading home after his shift when he spotted a bad wreck on the road. He pulled over right away, called for backup, and rushed to help. The crash victim lay injured on the ground with severe wounds. Hart immediately put on two turnipits to stop the bleeding, just in time. Fire and rescue teams later said those turnipits made all the difference, keeping the man alive until they arrived. Turns out the victim is a retired Shelby County sergeant. He's now recovering in the hospital, though the injuries will change his life. Officials praise Hart's off-duty heroism as a model for everyone in uniform.
