On April 23rd, New York Times Crossword fans got hit with some real Sunday Scaries this week. For the first time in its 84-year history, the Sunday Puzzle in the magazine edition turned out unsolvable because of a printing mixup. The April 19th puzzle, called Nuclear Fusion and Made by Michael Lieberman, went out missing the clue for five across. The Times caught wind of the problem before the magazine even hit stands. On April 18th, they posted a heads up on X, formerly Twitter, saying the grid didn't match the clues. They pointed solvers to the right version in that day's print new section or on the app. Solvers were thrown off, but the paper owned up quick with an editor's note apologizing for the mess. Crossword boss, Will Shortz, the 73-year-old legend, chimed in too, calling it a rare slip-up that frustrated everyone. Turns out, a fresh redesign of the magazine ditched the old puzzle page templates. Staff had to copy and paste from an earlier setup, which led to the glitch after printing was done.
Shortz says new templates are coming soon, so fans can breathe easy. No more unsolvable Sundays on the horizon. Stay in the know with entertainment and celebrity news today. AI-powered updates.
