On March 27, the chief executive of National Savings and Investments quit this week amid a major scandal. DAX Harkins left after 17 years of issues, left up to 37,500 families, unable to claim relatives' premium bond, winnings and savings. Officials say up to 476 million pounds in deposits may have gone unpaid. Harkins, who started as chief executive in April 2023, earned between 185,000 and 190,000 pounds a year, plus hefty pension perks. Even after leaving, he'll get a civil service pension worth 65,000 to 70,000 pounds annually, rising with inflation. Accounts pay gets value at over 1.3 million pounds, likely closer to 1.5 million or more. Pensions minister Torsten Bell called out NS&I for ignoring past warnings, like a 2018 case with another bank. Opposition figures slammed the government for delays in acting, saying families were short-changed when the nation needs savers most.

Bell noted the prior government also dropped the ball. Sir Jim Hara, ex-HMRC boss, steps NS interim chief to lead a three-month review of the tracing failures and fixes. NS&I has hired 100 extra staff for a dedicated team and promises the problems are fixed for good. Bell urges effective families not to hire claim firms. NS&I will proactively track them down, pay what's owed with interest, and offer compensation. Where needed? A full delivery plan comes in May to reunite savers with their money.
