On March 26, the chief executive of National Savings and Investments has been dismissed over a scandal involving millions in withheld savings. Dax Harkins, who led the company since April 2023, was let go this morning after issues came to light with about 37,500 savers not getting their money. These problems hit bereaved families' hardest, with lost track of investments, delay payouts, and even premium bond prizes held back. Dax Harkins had risen through the ranks over 22 years and earned more than 300,000 pounds a year in salary and perks. Pensions minister Torsten Bell called out the company for ignoring earlier warnings, like a 2018 case with another bank. He stressed that past governments and suppliers also fell short, leaving customers in the lurch. Sir Jim Harrah, former head of HM Revenue and Customs, steps in as interim chief to lead a fresh start and conduct a three-month review of what went wrong. Bell announced this in Parliament today. NSNI has now fixed the tracing issues, hired 100 extra staff, and set up a team to reunite
funds with rightful owners, including interest and compensation. They will share a full plan next month, so beneficiaries do not need outside help, just wait for the outreach.
