Nowra Residents Vote for New Helicopter Landmark

The Department of Defense launched a poll, letting locals pick between a replica of the classic UH-1B Iroquois Huey, or the modern SH-60 Seahawk, helicopter. This comes after the original Huey was removed for safety reasons. The iconic display has greeted drivers for decades at the town's northern entrance, symbolizing the region's defense history. Mounted high on a poll, the Vietnam era Huey was retired early due to corrosion and later refurbished before going up in 2003. But years of wear made it a hazard, leading to its takedown in September 2023. Local MP Fiona Phillips announced the community vote during the 2025 Federal Election Campaign, alongside the Defense Minister.
