Brian, it's time to dive into Notre Dame's opponent rundown. Here in the Irish Breakdown podcast, brought to you by our friend Zover at FanDuel. And this is a new addition that we have to our in season content plan. Got a lot of great feedback on it. Last week, and there's something that I'm excited that we do week over week. Premise is, we just kind of run down who Notre Dame's opponents play.
What are some of the big matchups and the games that keep your eye out on. Brian, it was a pretty strong start to the season for Notre Dame's opponents. As far as overall win-loss record goes as they looked ahead into week two. Yeah, you know, you look at their resume, Trevor. I think Notre Dame's opponents were 10 and three. Is that what I sent you? 10 and three, right? In the first two weekends. And then one of the losses was to Notre Dame. One of the losses was to another Notre Dame opponent in Miami. And then of course, we had Boston College who disarrounds everything. But when you look at Notre Dame's slate, it's been a good start to the season for a lot of Notre Dame's opponents, right? North Carolina has had, and you know, had a big season opening win. You know, Purdue had a very convincing season opening win. You look at a lot of the teams on the schedule. BYU obviously dominates the team, but they didn't play anybody. You know, Pat Fitzgerald gets the first, you know, first win. SMU goes on the road, beats Florida State in the opener.
So, you know, it was a good start to the season for Notre Dame's opponents. Now, let's see if they can build on it. And there's going to be some opportunities this week, Trevor, when you look at the schedule to say, hey, there's some interesting games this weekend. And it's funny that we talked about USC last weekend as Notre Dame's opponents. And somebody texted me and said, or DM me and we're like, hey, is there a reason you talk about USC? And I'm response is like, force of habit. That's not your fault. It's both our fault. So I send the list of the games we're going to talk about to Trevor. And I don't have USC on it because they don't play USC. And Trevor goes, hey, just so you know, USC plays Friday night. So I'm going to add that in there in the Friday night slate. And to my response was not, hey, Trevor, they don't play USC. My response is, oh, good looking out. And it's all our events are entire lifetimes. Both Ryan and mine outside in 2020. They play USC, but they are not on the docket of conversations. Yeah. So that was that was pretty interesting. But yeah, we won't be talking about the old Trojans. And they're matchup against Louise in this week.
But it is a very intriguing slate of games. And I think there's a lot more we're going to learn about some of their names opponents this week than certainly than what we did last week. That's for darn sure. When we run through this list, we're going to go in order of kickoff. And up first here, Brian, we have a Thursday night game. Tonight, we get to see Florida, A&M on the road against number seven, right Miami Hurricanes. You can watch that game on the ACC network. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. It's another just kind of should be a very easy win for the Hurricanes. You're muted, Brian. Brian, you're muted. I couldn't get back over. I got like three different screens open. So I couldn't get back to the main screen. I'm looking at three different things. But you know, this is this is going to be an annihilation. It really is. Trev, this is not going to be competitive game. Miami could come out completely unfocused
and still win by 60. They could just come out and just go through the motions and not be locked in and still win by, like I said, 50 or 60 points. This is an absolute mismatch in teams. I think that's going to be an absolute beat down Trev. Friday night is going to be a battle of just bad football team. 7.30 p.m. on ESPN 2 Rutgers at Boston College. That's going to be I think a really ugly football game in my opinion. I could be wrong. Brian is going to be an ugly football game. Yeah, it's going to be the set the sport back 30 years, bowl, toilet bowl, whatever you want to put in there. I think it's going to be some ugly football. We talked about that game yesterday in terms of, you have two coaches on the hot seat. The loser gets even more on the hot seat on the steaming hot on fire, ball of flames seat. And it's not like the winner is going to then just completely write the ship and turn things around either. So yeah, I'm with you. 7.30 match up tomorrow night's going to be not one that I'll be looking forward to.
But one that I, you know, once we get into the actual weekend slate, the traditional Saturday kickoff, start to get some interesting games at 12 p.m. You get East Tennessee State on the road against North Carolina. You can watch that on the ACC network. First opportunity that we have to see the tar heels in action since week zero when they upset TCU on the road in Ireland. Says was that a fluke? You know, that's going to find out, you know, I know look, they could play poorly in still in this game. But if they are turned around, this is, I think what their defense look great in the opener. This is a game where their offense should be able to get rolling and get a little bit of momentum here because East Tennessee State is a game they should absolutely dominate. Yeah, I'm expecting big things from North Carolina because now you have that week zero sample size things to go back to the lab and re-correct or re-correct and to correct. And now you've had two weeks of preparation for a significantly inferior opponent. I'm with you. One interesting match up here, Brian, we're going to talk about this in a little bit more detail
at the end of this. But Saturday at noon, Wake Forest travels up to West Lafayette to take on the Purdue boiler makers. You can watch that on FS1. Yeah, this, like I said, we're going to talk a little bit more about that one here in a little bit, but big opportunity for the boiler makers in this game. Big opportunity. And that's true for the next couple games that we're going to talk about here or go through here, but yeah, this is the, this is the first game of the weekend where you're like noon on Saturday. Hey, are you better or not? That's going to be very interesting, very interesting. Turning to the more mid-afternoon slate Saturday at 3.30 pm. The Arizona Wildcats take on the BYU Cougars. You can watch that game on Fox right now. BYU favored by seven and a half points by our friends over at Fandall. This is going to be another game that we take a little bit deeper of a dive into. It's going to be fascinating. Yeah, another statement game opportunity, you know, resume building type of game for BYU. And if they want to be that team that can get
to the playoffs this year, assuming they lose to Notre Dame, which we think that they will, this is the kind of game where it's like, okay, it's because of games like this that you're able to build your resume. And we're going to get a chance to see how good these teams actually are because neither of them really played anybody with a pulse and a week one. On Notre Dame's opponent schedule back to back in conference matchups, like you mentioned, Arizona at BYU in the big 12 at 3.30. You get cow on the road traveling all the way out east to Syracuse, New York to take on fraying brown in the orange and watch out on the ACC network. Little week two ACC matchup action. The Atlantic coast to coast conference is what that should be called now. And this literally will be that. Yes. Yep. So, ACC, yes, that's what the new league is called. Big game for Syracuse. Very big game for Syracuse. Look great in the opener, but it's against an FCS school. This is your chance to prove something. And then cow coming off of a tough loss to UCLA where they were competitive game for
three quarters. 24, 24 going on the fourth quarter. And then UCLA just ran it down their throat in the fourth quarter. Micah Micah's mind 22 actually has a good key. It's the all coasts conference. I mean, think about it. They're on the Gulf of America. They're on the Pacific Ocean and they're on the Atlantic Ocean. They have, you know, they have now have schools on, on, on literally everything that we have a coast on except like, yeah, that would be, yeah, every, every one. So, yeah, there you go. Well done, AZC. Well done. All coasts conference. Beautiful. Beautiful. Another 330 kickoff game, Brian. And you know, the big 10s attempt to have a just, they're really forcing this battle for the mitten thing. Eastern Michigan on the road and East Lansing taken on the Michigan State Spartans. Paffin Sherrod looking up to go 2 and 0. And year one for the Michigan State Spartans. Michigan State trying to be Mac champs. Get a lot of Mac teams. That should be a big win for them. Same thing with the four o'clock
on ACC trev. UC Davis at SMU. Very, very short turnaround for SMU. And that's why they scheduled UC Davis in week two. But it's a, hey, let's, let's play a half blow them out. Get your starters out. Let them rest and and move on to 2 and 0. That's the goal for the, the Mustangs. Not a lot to say about that one. That should be a wipe out. Yeah. Take care of the football that is priority. Numerou Uno for the Mustangs of that one. Okay, to the Saturday night slate here, Brian, 715 PM, Western Illinois on the road in Madison, taken on the Wisconsin Badgers. You can watch that game on the big 10 network. Yeah, so Wisconsin gets their bounce back game, right? You played Notre Dame, you caught a L and, you know, and now you've got to come out and see if you can bounce back. That's, you know, like we talked about there might, they're my pick to click. Yep. I think they bounce back impressively. I think after playing a team like Notre Dame, they're either a super worn out or B, they come out and say, hey, guys, we're actually pretty good.
We hung with them for a half. And, you know, some mistakes were made, but that's how they can spin it. And to, to agree there's some truth to that, let's go out and show this, these people who we are. And I think it's going to be a week where their offense gets something going a little bit more consistently than what we saw in the first game, for sure. Yeah, I'll be looking up to, I'll be looking forward to seeing what type of stat line Colton Joseph puts out. I know he was your pick to click, your player picked to click. And I'll be curious to see what he does. Cause now this is the level opponent that he was dominating. That's right. Well, that's a chance for my cheer, but you know what I'm saying? Yeah. Yeah. But I think it's also about getting somebody else going to is like get the other, the other stuff going as well. Yeah, that's going to be absolutely. Absolutely. Every game day you show up for your team. Now it's your time. Ask your prescriber about Wigovie, some Maglatide injection 2.4 milligrams, a GLP one.

Let's end this kind of rapid fire section before we dive into three games. A little bit more detail with some G5 action. Saturday, 7.30 pm, Saturday night, the Navy midship, and the middies on the road against Florida Atlantic. That game will be on ESPNU, big game for Brian Newberry on the road. Yeah, first road game of the year for Navy coming off of a beat down at Towson. This is a game you should win, but if Navy's going to be the G5 rep this year, they've got to avoid the bad losses. This could be one of those games where FAU is not a great team trev, but they're not terrible either. Florida whipped them pretty good last week, but this is that kind of game where you got to be locked in and really ready to get going. This is a big one for Navy. They've got three straight road games. Florida Atlantic this week, then they get a buy,
they play UAB on Friday, then they play at Air Force. After that, they've got one true road game, the rest of the year, the rest of their home, or two true road games rest of the year, starting October 10th, the rest of their games either at home, or they have two neutral field games against Notre Dame and Army. So that's going to make it. Yeah, so it starts to not going to be home a lot the next month. They got to keep it locked in. And then obviously Stanford is on a on a buy week. We'll pick up back again next week with the Cardinal. But Brian, there were three games specifically that we wanted to take a little bit deeper of a dive into and they're very interesting matchups. First one, ACC versus Big 10 action, the Demon Deacons on the road against the Boilermakers in West Lafayette. This is a major opportunity for Bariotam and Purdue. You know, we're talking about it from a Notre Dame standpoint, right? No name of Poon at standpoint. But when you look at it, it's kind of big for both teams, Trevor. And it's really big for
Wake because you're coming off of a nine win season. You were a pretty decent football team last year. You know, you had wins over Virginia Tech on the road, you beat SMU in an upset, you went on the road, beat a good Virginia team, you beat Mississippi State in a bowl game. You were nine and four team last year. And you come out this year, you've had some personnel losses, you win in the open or 38-16 track, but it was over Akron and they didn't look great. Purdue played Indiana State. I don't know what you can really know about in beating Indiana State. They're not good. So these are two teams. We really don't know who they are. The ACC cannot afford to have a loss to arguably the second worst or second worst team. Could you imagine the weekend for the ACC if they lose to Rutgers and Purdue? And one of the team, a BC lose is fine, but one of the teams that loses is one that went one nine games in your league last year. Oh, terrible, terrible. But for Purdue, this is your chance to say,
hey, listen, man, we're turning this thing around. We're going to be a better football team. And I think this team needs a confidence builder. Travis, you got to learn how to win. This team doesn't know how to win. They haven't won in a while. And when they do win, it's over somebody not good. This is their chance to kind of go out there and get a win over a team that's actually good or at least reported to be good. So I think this is big for Purdue. This could be a giant, giant confidence builder for them. I mean, this is a team trip that hasn't won a conference game since 2023. And in the last two years, their wins have been over Indiana State, Ball State, and Southern Illinois. That's it. They haven't beaten a power four team since they beat Indiana ironically in 2023. Because a little context to how good of a turnaround job that Kurt Signetti did at Indiana.
Game before he took over, they lost to Purdue. And by the way, that wasn't a good Purdue team. That was a four and eight Purdue team. So yeah. Yeah. Now, this prime opportunity for Barrio to get the ball rolling. I think that's a perfect example. You got to learn how to win. You got to get once you get the first one. And I'm not going to try to paint this picture. I know Brian's not trying to do this either that. If you beat Wake Forest, it's going to start this avalanche of buildings for Purdue. But you do need to establish yourself as somebody that there has to be some signs of one from Purdue. beating Indiana State does not do that to you. Yes. But yeah. And then you've got home game against Minnesota. Home games against Washington. Home game against Maryland. Home game against Wisconsin. You have road games against UCLA and Illinois. If this team starts kind of believing like, hey, we're a good football team. You know, maybe they can pull off a couple of upsets this year and maybe get to a ball game. But you know, this is a team that just like last year was a step in the right direction. Yeah,
they went two and 10. There's only one game better than the year before. But the year before Trev, they got absolutely just destroyed. I mean, we've talked about it. But last year, you know, obviously, no name beat him pretty good. But they were competitive early in that game. USC beat him by 16. But that was a competitive game for a while. They lost a Minnesota on the road by seven. They lost a Rutgers by three. They lost Atmishkin by five. You know, even the Indiana game was more competitive than it was the year before. And Ohio State was 34, 10. They kind of, you know, they just battled in that game where they just didn't roll over and die like they did in 2024. But at some point in time, that has to result in victories for the players to still continue to be bought into what very Odom is selling. And and that's why I think a game like this could be huge for them. If you can't beat Wake Forest at home, who are you going to beat in your league? Yeah, big opportunity for Purdue. Another big opportunity shifting gears to some big 12 action,
Brian Arizona wild cats on the road against the BYU Cougars. Early in season conference matchup for BYU and head coach Kalani Sataki who's looking to solidify themselves as either front runners in the big 12 or one of the top contenders in the big 12. Once again, this season picking up an early home win against a good Arizona state or a good Arizona team is a good way to do that. This is a game that nobody's really that I've seen talking about. Despite the fact that I think it's a really good game. It's just kind of typical ESPN that it's a really good football game that we're not discussing. Obviously last year Arizona won nine football games last year. They were good football team and they took BYU to overtime. Matter of fact, BYU had to come back in that game. If you remember, it was now in Arizona needed two over times to win that game. BYU jumped up to a 14 nothing lead and then Arizona scored the next 24 unanswered points and had a 24 14 lead in the fourth quarter. BYU comes back and ties it up with 19 seconds left in the game.
Barrett Bachmire scored some two yards out. They trade fuel goals and then BYU wins it in the second overtime with the Barrett Bachmire touchdown run. It was a great football game. And at the time, I'm thinking, well, BYU must not be that good because Arizona was not good the year before. They were struggling. Their first year under the new head coach was not the greatest. They went for an eight. Really struck had blowouts lost by 24 to case state 32 22 to BYU 27 to Colorado. 44 to UCF. They got blown out 21 points TCU Arizona beat him by Arizona state beat him by 42. Like they were bad. And then they had gotten blown out by Iowa state two weeks before. So we're thinking like, well, BYU's not that good. Well, that was Arizona lost the next week to Houston. The Dent lose again the rest of the regular season. And then it up as a nine and three team in the regular season lost to SMU by five in the bowl game. So they were a much better team and they got a lot coming back now. Their second area is a question mark against a BYU
receiving core. That's a bit of a question mark. Look good in the opener, but it's Utah tech. What do you really know about, you know, this receiving core beating Utah tech, right? Right. So that's the thing is which which team is most improved in that one area. I can't wait to watch the battle of the trenches with the BYU align against the Arizona front seven. That's going to be a really really intriguing battle. But this is BYU's opportunity to say, if you're a title contender, this is a game you need to win and you need to look good winning it. That doesn't mean winning by 30. It just means you don't want it to be like a 13 to 10 slug fest. You're like, they're not that good. You need to look good. If Arizona also looks good, that's fine, but you got to win this game. But it's definitely going to be a one of those games we learned a lot about these two football teams. And I think it's one of the best games of the weekend. Yeah, one that I wish is generating a little bit more attention, but unfortunately it isn't, but I'm with you. I'm very much looking forward to seeing that one. Every game day, you show up for your team. Now it's your time.
We go, we go, we go, we go. Ask your prescriber about Wigovie, some Maglatide injection 2.4 milligrams, a GLP one. Last interesting matchup that we're diving into on Notre Dame's opponent schedule is a lot more interesting matchups to come on the show. Don't worry about that. But it's the California golden bears on the road going coast to coast to play the Syracuse Orange inside of the dome. We talked yesterday in fran brown. Is it necessarily on the hot seat per se, but the burner's definitely on. And so you want to make sure if you're fran brown and Syracuse, you have Steve and Shelley back healthy. This is a big opportunity for you to say, hey, everything's going to be okay out here. Yeah, look, I don't love the fact that fran browns on the hot seat for what he did last
year was, or his first year was really impressive. You win 10 games and you have a heck of a season. As good as that was, last year was equally bad. And you just can't ignore that. You can't pretend like that didn't happen. So I don't know again that I would say he's definitely on the hot seat, but I definitely think he is, like I said, they got it warming up a little bit. You know what I mean? Like the fire just kind of just getting started. You know, you just kind of, you know, sparked some rocks, you know, on some, you know, some weeds. And it's just now getting started. You need to pour some cold water on it. And you know, this is an opportunity for Syracuse to to go out there and get a good win, Trev, and show that, hey, look, we may not be completely there yet, but we're getting very close. And when you look at this game this weekend, and you say, this is an opportunity to get a conference win over a solid opponent, a coach in his first year that's, you know, known as a real strong recruiter. This is the kind of win that Syracuse needs.
You've got to be able to hold servant home, especially against teams like Cow. Now what I mean, team like cows, Cow is a good football team for every, they're a bold cow. I think they're going to be a ball team this year. But when you look at your schedule, if you're going to be a ball team, you can't afford to lose games like this. Your next three games are on the road. You play pit, Yukon and Virginia. You come home for two out of three games against Louisville SMU. In between there's Attenorth Carolina, you get Clemson at home, and then you finish in at NC State at Boston College, and then home gets no game. If you're going to make it back to a ball game this year, this is the kind of game you have to win, absolutely have to win. I'll have to overcome a little bit of adversity as well. Geron Sack, Politele comes into this game with a little bit of a banged up ankle. Now they pulled him in week one because there was just no need to continue playing him, which I understand, but he wasn't listed on their injury report. I just went and looked that up. But be curious to see what his overall health status is going to be because if Syracuse gets up on you, I don't know if this is a game where you can afford to just take him out, play passive. That could end up playing a factor in this one as well.
It's just a kind of noted aim angle on this one too. This is a great opportunity if he does play, and we expect him to play. As like you said, he's not on the injury report. This is a great opportunity for Steve Angelli to go out there and have a performance against another name quarterback, another brand name quarterback, and make a statement. I think that could be that could be big for Steve, big weekend for Steve. Just for Syracuse in general, it's a lot like what we talked about with Purdue. They need a confidence builder. I think North, look, we may not care about it, New Hampshire, but them playing as well as they did was a confidence builder, but it won't take you so far. These are the kind of games that can be real confidence builders. If Syracuse is going to pull off an upset or two, and when six-date games, games like this are building blocks to that. Let me ask you this final question. Curve Ball is we kind of wrap up this segment. Let me ask you this, Brian. Is there any game in the slate that we
went through talking rapid fire that you think that you would turn on? It's like, I wasn't expecting this to be a close game. That is a bit of a curveball. Let me look at this. You're talking about of the Notre Dame games, right? The Notre Dame of Pona games, right? We're a game that you say, I wasn't expecting that to be a competitive football game. I'll have to give you one is Michigan State, Eastern Michigan. Michigan State was on the verge of going to Lito out last week and then they couldn't finish. They couldn't really put that team away. They were my pick to click and they looked like that in the first half and couldn't put it away. I'd say, do they do a similar thing this week, Eastern Michigan's a program that's a little bit in trouble right now. Chris Creighton's I think a little bit in trouble. Then I think the other one would be the the Navy at Florida Atlantic. Anytime you go on the road in conference, you got to be locked in. Those would be the two. Other than the three we talked about, if any of the other games are competitive,
I mean, you got Florida and him at Miami, Rutgers at BC, I wouldn't be surprised by anything in that game. East Tennessee State and North Carolina, that should be a route. You see Davis at SMU, that should be a route. West Illinois was constant. That should be a route. I think those would be the games that I would look at. Yeah, we see that very much the same. I think those are the two games that I had in my mind as well. Keeping an eye out on Patrick's show of the Michigan State, don't think they get upset. But if I am going to just be flipping through the channels, you know, if Notre Dame's on a commercial break or Notre Dame hasn't kicked off yet, it wouldn't shock me if that was a, you know, 13 to 6 game at one point randomly.
