We'll have you Monday, Brian, we are finally here. Spring practice for Notre Dame starts at the end of this week. We have another great week of content coming for you guys. As you know, it's Monday, it's BISO Hold Day, and we're going to dive into all that here in a little bit. But, Brian, I know before we really kicked everything off today and got started, there's something that you wanted to touch on. Yeah, before we dive into the BISO Hold, obviously, right now, and you guys can watch it if you want. It's being streamed by Andy.com. There's a link to it on Skip Holtz, actually put a link to it on, but obviously Coach Holtz right now is, the funeral for Coach Holtz is going on right now, and I just thought it would be appropriate to, just one more time, remember him, we are working on setting up some things we'd like to do to honor him with a show, but obviously those things take time because of something like this. And I just thought it would be out of place if we didn't kick off our show just once
again, just really thinking Coach Holtz for people, especially people my age, because I didn't grow up in the Arab-Harse Egen era, and I was born, when I was born, Dan Divine was a head coach, and the great coach of my generation was Lou Holtz, but also as a coach, the impact he had on me as a coach and the things that the lessons that he taught about life and about, what it means to be a coach, and just meeting so many of his former players and seeing the impact that he had on their lives, like genuine impact, like big grown men that played in the NFL, and were big time football players, and played against Florida State, or played against Miami in 88 or 93. And to see the tears coming down their eyes because they lost them, and just to see the impact that they had, it was special, and it just shows just what kind of man he was, beyond the wins. I mean, the wins and losses are tremendous, let's be honest, he never gets to Notre Dame if he doesn't win it in, see State, and win it Arkansas, and win it in Minnesota, but
it was the impact, and then to see like Minnesota players, and South Carolina players, there was a lot of South Carolina players that had things to say about him. And it wasn't about, oh, man, he taught me so much about football, it was, I'm the father I am today, I'm the husband I am today, I'm the man I am today, because in Lou Holtz played a big role in that, so I just felt we should just kind of just think about and remember Coach Holtz, and we certainly won't ever forget about him, but we just thought it'd be, be wise, because his service is going on right now at Notre Dame, so we just wanted to, to say thanks to Coach Holtz for showing everybody what, what it means to truly be a leader of men, and the importance of, in the role that they can have, and then of course all the joy that he brought us is the head football coach at Notre Dame, it's Notre Dame fans, so we'll never forget it, I just thought it was, we needed to start
to show off with that, before we, before we dove too far into the, the bison holds. Yeah, it's definitely a great way to start off the show, we talked about it, you know, when the news broke, and you know, you're always remembered by, especially in the football world, the titles you have, conference championships, win percentage, but it was, it was great to see a lot of his former players come on and talk about all the impact that he had off the field, and I think that's truly special. And I'm hoping we can do something here, I'm like, that I'm working on it, but I'm also trying not to push too hard, because like you said, they are grieving, and it can come across as bad form to, hey, come on the show, but we're planning some things, and I think we'll be able to get some guys on, and it's going to be fun. So yeah, just got to see if they're, they're down for it, with some of the things I want to do. So we'll see, but I thought there was no better way to kick the show off today than to talk about that. There was, yeah, so excited about it. So you ready to get rocking and rolling trip? You got anything else you want to talk about before we get going into the show? Good.
Yeah, I put it up on the premium message boards, but figured now everybody knows that needs to know that we had to tell in person, but Lauren and I are expecting kid number one. So due date right now is officially at the, around the end of September. So it's been a really, really tough secret to keep the last month and a half. Yes, yes, it has. I had told Trevor today that I'm glad he's finally saying it because I almost let it slip about about five times, but can I bring it up onto the thing? So that is baby trobridge, right? So yeah, Trevor's going to be a dad. So very excited about that, but thought that that would also be the wonderful things about the world that God made. Obviously, there's the sadness that comes with loss, but also the joy that comes with life and excited for you, my man. So and I was fortunate that I was one of the first people that Trevor told
and I was truly honored by that. And I truly, truly believe that trip meant a lot to me that you trust me that. And I'm so glad you got it out because as we said, it was hard. I almost let it slip like four or five times, like in cash because you and I talked about it so much. It's almost like I have no big deal. And I was a few times almost let it slip. So my pressure's off. No, I get it, man. I think it was either last week or a couple of weeks ago, we talked about the top three games that we're looking forward to. And I talked about how I'm really looking forward to when they play Purdue. And I almost said something then, but I was like, you know what? I'm a wait a little bit while longer, but it's the due date right now estimated September 24th. They play Purdue, I think September 26. And so that would be the day. Hopefully that would get to take the kid home from the hospital. So that that would be the third reason why. But yeah, it's been it's been tough not to say anything, but it's been it's been a crazy ride so far and kind of just getting started. So yeah, excited about it. Now, Trev, it's time for BISO holds. So let's get rocking and rolling.
And of course, as always, a reminder that BISO holds are for premium members only. We do these. We put this on the board. People submit their submit put their submissions in. We respond to it. It's not a question. It's more of a statement. And we either buy that statement, hold that statement or sell that statement, or you give us a list of options of things we have to buy so hold under certain circumstance. If you want to get a BISO hold statement made, then you can go ahead and throw a super red and respond it to you can throw a super chat in there. But I always say, if you're not a premium member and you want to get your BISO hold put in there, save that money and go sign up for membership at boards.rspracetown.com. And then you can put as many BISO holds as you want. And then you'll find out today, there's some folks in there that put a lot of them in there. And that's what that's your freedom and your right to do so when you're a member. We got Jacob Sweat, grateful and thankful J.S. here. Shout out to Trevor and his family, R.I.P.
Rest and Peace coach Lou. Thank you for all the great content. Jacob, thank you, man. And hey, I did get your email this weekend. I just haven't had a chance to respond to you yet, man. But I I really appreciate that message you sent to me and I will be, I will be a respond if you sue, man. It meant a lot to get that message from you, truly, truly. And we're glad that you're doing well, real, real, real glad that you're doing well. So, uh, Trev, let's get rocking and rolling. And we've got submission number Numero Uno here from our guy, Salty Virginia peanuts. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has made comments regarding whether the SEC would break away from the NCAA and form its own league. The disintegration of NCAA football, either by the SEC alone or by a group of conferences wishing to form a super league would be more harmful to college football than anything that has occurred to date and be the greatest threat so far to its popularity. Uh, I'm gonna sell it because you put in the super league part. I'm not someone who in theory
just just because thinks the super league would be a terrible idea. I think the super league could be a bad idea if not done correctly, but I just don't think in theory it's a it's a bad idea just because I think there's some merit to it because I think the NCAA is so bad. The problem with anything is look, there's merit to the NCAA staying in charge and it being a good thing depending on how they do it. There's merit to saying the NCAA is a is a is a completely broken entity that can never be rebuilt or restructured in any way because of how bad it was for so long. They're both have merit. I could make a case that a super league will be the destruction of the student athlete and will be the full-time turning them into employees, which I think is the worst case scenario for student athletes in my opinion is that they become employees and, uh, you know, sign a big NIL contract and
not live up at expectations. But hey, I still want to be part of the team. Sorry, you're fired. You know, I mean, this is it's bad. But there's also a world in which a super league is done the right way where it be, you know, where it does do a revshare. We do have NIL. We do have certain things and it's done in a way that's kind of good for the institutions and good for the players. I mean, there's no right or wrong in as far as what the entity should be. The right or wrong is what the entity stands for and tries to accomplish. And so I just, in theory, I can't say that I buy this. But what I will say to you, Salty, is there's no question that there's an opportunity. There's a chance that a break off from what they super league, you know, let's say it's 40 to 50 teams in theory does not destroy the popularity coach football. It's only about how it, how it's done. That's more of
the issue is how is the, how is the break off done? Is it done in a way where the 40, 50, let's say there's even 60 super league teams kind of formed their own deal and like they've got their own contract, you know, like there's, there's 60 teams and there's a revshare, there's a TV deal split between all of them the same way. Like I've talked about, there's protections put in there for student athletes to make sure that schools are are putting more emphasis on the student part of it. There's all those things that fact they're into where it could be good, but the NCAA could also maybe do this. Like that's the thing is it's what does the entity do more so than it being something about the entity inherently being good or bad. It's like with anything, you know, you look at anything in a business or whatever, if a business goes on long enough, there's CEOs that do a great job and try to do things for the good of not only themselves and they're bored, but also their workers
and also there's customers and then there's CEOs that take over who only care about the bottom line for themselves and the board. Right. It doesn't make that company inherently bad. It's more so the leadership is not doing what it needs to do to make sure that it's taking care of all parties involved. It's doing so in a way that's maybe corrupt or misguided or whatever. So that's kind of my point of it is I don't know that I necessarily believe that all 70 or whatever power five teams should remain power five. I'm not a belief in that. I don't I don't know that there's any need to have Rutgers as a power five entity for perpetuity. For example, if it gets smaller, it gets smaller. You know, as long as it's not smaller as like 30 teams like that, that I wouldn't support, but like if the power four broke off or maybe a condensed version of the power four broke off, okay, it is what it is, but that's my thing. It just it just depends on and somebody say, you know, cut Northwestern
out. I mean, I guess if your only thought is football, but but this isn't this kind of thing, isn't just going to be for football. That that's the reality of it is as I don't think there's going to be any super league that's just football. I don't know that that's I don't know that that could stand legal challenges. I just I think it have to be a super league that involves all the sports. I could be wrong, but I just have a hard time seeing how that other part legally stands up. So, um, and if that's the case, then you may think, okay, well, this school like a Northwestern doesn't have any value. Okay, in football, sure. But there's other sports where those things are going to matter more. It just depends on what the structure of the breakaway looks like. If it is something where it's just football, that's fine. It's a different deal. But will NCA schools then be able to play these schools in other sports as well? That that's where you get a lot of these question marks. So it just depends on the the structure in which it's done not so much the entity. I don't care what entity steps up and leads the right way. If it's the NCA grade,
if the NCA has a completely rebrand and says, Hey, the entity that we were is dead, we have to remake ourselves in this way. Okay, cool. Let's roll NCA. If they're not willing to do that, then they can die for all I care as an entity. And something else can replace it. That would be the ideal. But I don't know what that looks like in theory. So I can't sell it just as a broad statement. It would just depend on how it how it's done. Yeah, I get that completely salty. I understand where you're coming from from this one. I'm in the same boat as Brian. I can't really buy it or sell it, but it feels weird to hold because there's not just we're going off of a hypothetical here. I think the hardest part about this is we can file this under the list of things over the last decade that there's been ideas about college sports, really the NCAA that have looked great on paper. Like NIL on paper was a great idea. I was always for paying players for how much revenue they generated their schools in the NCAA. I understand on paper, I get the benefits of the transfer portal.
It helps teams build roster zero over a year. It gives other players opportunities to go and play right away. So I'm sympathetic to that, but that's on paper. The execution of a lot of these things have not gone the way that their intention was. And so while the nobility of forming a super league might be there, it all comes down to the execution. What's the criteria to joining this super league? Is it based on the number of, you know, your win percentage, your conference championships. If you want a title, is that essentially your golden ticket into this super league? So those are all the things that would be, I guess, up for grabs, which I think becomes really interesting when you start talking about it. But I'm in the same boat as Brian here with this one. Good stuff. We did have a super chat come up from our guy Drew, you know, UT Iris 55. So bring that one up real quick. Appreciate the super chat. Drew, are you buying that CJ car, becomes best quarterback at Notre Dame has had in the last 20 years selling the hype because he's
still improving or holding until we see him against elite defenses. Yeah, I don't, there's the, I've seen some other people like this. I was having this conversation with somebody other day, and they were just like nitpicking CJ car. And I'm like, look, I think your issue isn't with CJ car. I think your issue is with the hype that he's getting. And for some reason, you just have this, this automatic like I am not going to buy into the hype, right? So now that it's about this guy, well, I'm automatically going to kind of poo poo this guy. How does he play against elite defenses? I mean, we saw him play against elite defense last year. And he struggled early in the game and then make some big time throws to lead Notre Dame back. I'm referring to Miami. You know, Notre Dame was down 10 points in the fourth quarter. And CJ car led two drives that allowed Notre Dame to tie that game up. And, and so, uh, and then the next week again staying in him, I don't know that I'd call A&M's defense elite. It's a very talented defense. They were certainly elite team. They were top 10 team. And CJ carved him up and, and led Notre Dame on a fourth
quarter drive that gave them a lead with like two minutes left in the game. So, uh, I just, I, I just think that we need to not jump on either of the band wagons of CJ is the greatest quarter back. Like, look, no one said that he is the best quarterback in the last 20 years. I think people are saying he has a chance to be. And I think he absolutely has a chance to be. You know, and you say, okay, well, he's not proven. Uh, yeah, he kind of is. I mean, look, like Drew with all due respect, last year CJ car in his first season as a starter as a red shirt freshman set a Notre Dame record in passer rating. And not only set the record treb, he destroyed the record. The record was previously 161 point, I think four by Jimmy, I'm looking it up now by Jimmy Clausen and Bob Williams. CJ had over once at 161.4. CJ was over 168. He was 168.06 last season in quarterback rating.
That's a blowout. That's not even close. Brady Quinn's highest quarterback rating was 158.4. CJ completed 66.6 percent of his passes last year. That's higher than Brady Quinn ever had as a quarterback. And Jimmy only surpassed that once. And that was in his third year. As a true sophomore, Jimmy Clausen with more experience than CJ car completed 60.9 percent of his passes through 25 touchdowns and 17 interceptions on over 400 attempts. He averaged 7.2 yards per attempt. CJ car last year averaged 9.4 yards per attempt and 14.1 yards per completion. Jimmy Clausen in his second year at Notre Dame averaged 7.2 yards per attempt and only 11.8 yards per completion. Brady Quinn, excuse me, in his second season averaged 7.3 yards per attempt, completed 54.6 percent of his passes and averaged 13.5 yards per completion.
His pass rating was 125.9. So if you want to compare CJ at the same time as those guys, his numbers aren't even close. Now there's a little bit inherently flawed with making a comparison like that. We're talking about guys that played, you know, 15, 16, 17, 20 plus years ago systems are changed and things like that. But you can't look at what CJ car did and not be blown away by what he did at his age. I mean, he set Notre Dame records as a red shirt freshman and is in top five and other rankings. And he's done things we haven't seen a quarterback do in a very, very long time. So I think we can appreciate that. I think we can look at what CJ has done in big moments and say, yeah, I think he's kind of proved himself, you know, goes on the road against an SEC team that had just given Ole Miss a game where they, if they don't fumble inside the 10, you know, they beat Ole Miss who made the playoffs and CJ has that game over by halftime.
And he's just carves Arkansas up. So it's just one of those things where you can, you can say he still has to prove something to be considered in the greatest quarterback last 20 years. That's a fact. I mean, he, he had a great red shirt freshman year. He had the best second years of starter of Notre Dame quarterback I've ever seen. His second year wasn't better than Brady Sturd or Jimmy Sturd. He's got to take that next step. No question. But he's way closer to what they became in year three than what they were in going into year three. And so like that, that's my thing is like, I think we should just be able to appreciate, hey, CJ did a phenomenal job. Last year. Does he have to prove that he can take that next step? Absolutely. Absolutely. Chris, I, I, or Drew, I do completely believe he has to show it. But I'm buying the hype. The hype is deserved because of what he did last year. He wasn't out there throwing for a bunch of yards against bad teams and not doing anything against the good teams. He also did some very good things
against the good teams that he played last year too, despite having an offensive line that did basically next to nothing in the, in the, in really the first two games, especially the first game. He averaged 9.2 yards per attempt against Texas A&M. You know, through for 293 yards against Texas A&M, like CJ was quite good last year. He completed under 60% of his passes in one game, one game. And that was against Syracuse because only had nine attempts. So, yeah, CJ was quite good last year. Was he perfect? Heck no. Can you get a lot better? Heck yes. But I'm, I'm buying the hype because I think he's earned the right to be in this conversation. And he's not doing it just because he's there. Look, as again, I'll point out, he was top five in the country last year in three different categories. Top five nationally and quarterback rating, yards per completion and yards per attempt. Top five. And if you look at against power five teams only, again, he was also still top five. And I think that's what makes CJ, in my opinion, unique is that he did it against the good teams
as well. If you look at his pass or ratings of quarterbacks against ranked teams only, and you only include teams to play more than one ranked opponent, he was fourth in pass or rating against ranked teams. He was fourth in yards per attempt against ranked opponents. Last season, you know, so CJ did some very, very good things last year, very good things. And we can be excited about it and buy the hype while also admitting that he just can't repeat what he did last year. He needs to get better. But I'm actually buying the hype, absolutely buying the hype. And if he does build on year one, then I think he will go down as the best quarterback. Notre Dame has had in the last 20 plus years. Keep in mind too that the last 20 plus years does not include Brady Quinn's 05 season. So there's that as well. Yeah, I do not feel a fear of sophomore slump for the person who asked that question. I do not
fear that. I don't believe in that. I don't think that's a thing. I think that's players can have a sophomore slump. I don't think it's a thing that just inherently like some curse that goes on certain players. I don't believe that. Sure. I'm definitely buying into the hype. I mean, look, he's not the favorite on Fandall to win the Heisman trophy because it's the cool thing to do. I think CJ had an amazing year. But I mean, with all due respect to our friends over at Fandall, I don't really think that they're paying too much attention to yards per attempt and pass a rating. They're looking at total output and total numbers. And while I think CJ had a very productive year, it's not for that because they know the potential of what he can be. So we're not also the only ones buying into the hype. But with him being still unproven versus waiting to see it against a tougher opponent versus being the best quarterback in 20 years, like with a lot of things, I think the truth lies somewhere between. It's kind of like the same conversation we had about Jeremiah Love because there's still some things that we needed to see from Jeremiah Love going into 2025. We knew what we thought he could be, but we needed to see his first. I'm going to see,
Jay, we still have got to see him play and start in a playoff game. Now, I think he would be great. I think that he would perform just like he did on the road against Miami and at home against Texas A&M and on the road against Arkansas. But we don't know until we see it. We can project. But until that happens, we have to wait and see. That being said, I think he would be perfectly fine. But before he gets into the best quarterback in 20 years, what he does in the post season is also going to carry a little bit of weight for me. Now, if he performs bad, I'm going to die. Socks, I'm not going to write him off. We just don't know. I don't know that any of those quarterbacks performed well enough in the post season for that to really, I mean, it's comparing them to how they perform. I mean, Brady played into power or played into FC. I mean, New Year's six games, they got blown out both times. He played a lot better against Ohio State than he did against LSU. That's for sure. Jimmy never played on that stage. So, and then Ian Book never played well on that stage. So that that
that'll be something too. Like that bars a lot lower than just the overall performance. Like sure. The bar to match what Jimmy and Brady did in the regular season and in night to in oh, I keep saying 19 for some reason. In 0 9 and 0 5 is a lot higher than the bar for how they perform in the post season. But as far as overall, just evaluating a Notre Dame quarterback, the post season absolutely should be a big part of it. And out, but here's another thing to trap. I would argue that the team that he's playing on is also a lot better, which also says, okay, I need to see a little bit more because you're playing on. I mean, Brady Quinn would have had the defense that CJ Carr had. You start having those conversations. If Jimmy Clausen would have had the offensive line in and defense that CJ, I mean, there's all types of those conversations. But the reality is is when you pop on CJ's film, you say that kid's special. That's that's the reality of it. Now, he's got to build on it. And anyone that knows him knows that that CJ Carr is not content with what he did last year. Now, it's going to be fun to see him take it to
that next level. Mm hmm. Has the news been getting you down? I'm Megan McCartle and I'm here to help. I'm the host of a news show from Washington Post opinion called reasonably optimistic. I mean you and I've talked about that. I actually like some aspects of this USC team. Part of it's going to be depend on how Lincoln Riley builds this team from a for a schematic play calling standpoint because if he tries to run the offense the way he did the last few years they're going to struggle big time. If he lean if he goes kind of go back to his Oklahoma roots like the things that Bob Stoops taught him like running the football and stuff like that play action pass then I actually think USC's got a chance to be very good on offense. Their receiving core is going to be young in experience. It's got some talent but it's it's not going to be as good as it was this past year with Jacob Elaine and McIleman in that regard but if I love their offensive line coming back it's much improved. It's going to be a good offensive line.
They're running back because which one came back it was Ely Standards didn't come back because the other one right Jordan he came back correct and then of course they've got the kid that took over last year that was so good. King goodness gracious. I'm drawing a complete blank on that kid. The running back that took over it's King Miller that's what it was. Yeah Wayma Jordan King Miller both come back they both averaged over six yards of carry last year. The offensive line is improved and you know the defense should be solid. That's a big question mark for me is how's Gary Patterson going to do is your defensive coordinator. They've got a completely remade staff. Noter name had to remake all their assistant coaches but they have the same coordinator. USC remade everybody. Eric Henderson's gone. Doug Belk has gone and obviously Gary Patterson's not so go over so I could see them having a better team and a worse record a regular season record.
Yes I could definitely see that. I could definitely see that. It just depends on what Lincoln Riley does. I think there's a chance that USC could be a 9-10-1 team if he builds the team with the right mentality. I just don't have a lot of faith in him to do that but if he does and he's about toughness and running a ball and you know playing good defense and then still being able to score points then yeah his team will be very good if it's going to be but this is who I am and this is what I do then they'll struggle. So you like to talk about I need to see it a lot Trev that's one where I absolutely need to see that Lincoln Riley knows how to build a team that way before I buy the hype 100 percent. Yeah absolutely the last time he had a double digit win season was when he had a Heisman winning quarterback and they still didn't make the playoffs because they couldn't close in the back-to-all championship. I mean we're talking about a team that is relatively underperformed every year since 2022 and you could even argue they underperformed as a team in 2022. Now you
know it gets skewed a little bit because like well it's his first year what does he build that with but I mean really since Notre Dame smacked him around in 2023 they have not been the same program because they walked into that game undefeated. They've been different ever since then on paper. So could they be a better team? Yeah I would argue I don't know if there's talented a team but they could be a better team to your point about having the right mentality and doing the right things on offense but yeah we'll see but I definitely buy it as a possibility for sure. So actually I've always found that statistic fascinating Trevor and I'm just I'm going to give that to people now so you would mention that they were sick they were undefeated they were six of no coming into that game. USC was six of no and they were ranked I think 10th in the country at the time coming into that game correct. 10. Notre Dame beat them. They were seven at 10 and three coming into that game. Their losses were two gained losses to a ranked Utah team
and then a bowl game lost to two lane a ranked two lane team. We're really good two lane team in a bowl game where you know they don't have guys playing whatever excuses people like to use when they're first six games of 2024 or 2023 excuse me and then they won most of those you know convincingly they had just beaten a ranked air zone a team by two and blood Stanford blood airs on a state blood Nevada San Jose State and all that. Notre Dame beat some 48 to 20. Since that loss they have gone 18 and 14. 18 and 14. If you include the Notre Dame game in there since they started 17 and three and since that point time they've gone 18 and 15 and there's been a lot of double digit losses in that stretch. So if you talk about the 15 losses travel let's go three in 23 let's go four you had one in 2024 you've got this one this one six of those of those
15 losses that's almost half have been by double digits. Yeah so yeah I just you know people in the chest saying oh Notre Dame broke them yeah and the only way to fix it is to say why did they break us? Why does why did Oregon bully us this year? Why did we have you know why why does Notre Dame not only beat us but like just run it down our throats every freaking it's because your team is not tough and your your defense can't practice to be tough when it doesn't play anything tough in practice and that's going to be a big key for you I see this year big key. Another one from Detrol Hunter this is from a Josh Pate segment but not about who said it just given credit Florida having a top five wide receiver room in college football the others listed were Ohio State Texas Miami and Oregon. Let me pull up Florida's Widers I know they had a lot
of transfers so let me just see this real quick. Number one I think first and foremost you're going to have to forgive Josh because he's turned himself into an even bigger SEC homeward than he was before and I don't say that with a lot of excitement I'm not trying to trash on Josh I rather respect the job he's done but the last since he's kind of partnered with on three at ESPN the reality is Trev is that it's it's gotten it's gotten a little I don't want to say click baby because I think that's lazy I think it's gotten a little bit he knows who the big audience is and you know and where they are and where they come from so you know Florida's having a top five room because they bring back Vernell Brown who's a nice player Dallas Wilson who's a very talented freshman last year but only at 12 catches and then they bring in Bailey Stockton from Georgia Tech
they brought in Eric Singleton from Auburn through Georgia Tech I'm sorry that's that's not a top five receiver room that that's sorry that's just that's a bit of an absurd statement is it a good receiver room sure but what are we just going to say okay well we're just basing this off of recruiting rankings which he tends to do okay fine if you want to base this off recruit recruiting rankings then Notre Dame is without a thousand percent a better receiver room than Florida you kidding me like so no there in no world is Florida a top five receiving core none yeah this is a this is a sell for me as well I really don't have much beef with his other four inside of his top five like I understand the arguments would be the one I would I would question
more than the others but there's when you have a guy as good as Jeremiah Smith here in there but well I'm sorry to have keep going and then I'll uh because I have a follow-up I apologize go ahead no you're good man you're good I was going to echo the same thing it's look I understand that you get a bump for having one of if not arguably the best player returning in college football I understand that completely but we have yet to see Chris Henry Jr. take a collegiate snap now at a school like Ohio State am I willing to give a little bit of leeway because they've produced wide receivers at such a high level I am but the guy that did that is also gone so there's just there's a lot of things that I still have to see like I've been seeing a lot about like the legend bay kid that that's also a true freshman there I guess he's starting to turn some heads in the spring potentially but right now you're two most proven guys are Jeremiah Smith the best wide receiver returning in the college football and Brandon Innis who's a fine player but seven he was closer to Jeremiah to Jeremiah love in yards per catch last year for what Jeremiah loved it in yards per rush so 7.5 yards per
catch last year now they did get a kid from was it UTSA or was it UTEP they got a kid from one of those Texas schools Devon McQueen he was from UTSA nice player average 11.2 yards per catch in at the at the G five level okay had six catches for 33 yards against Texas day in him like sorry you're just you're like did did did did Georgia tech have the best receiving court in the country or one of the five best and they had Calvin Johnson no that Arizona have one of the five best receiving courts and they had Ted McMillan no they just had to have the best player well how state could do that but they've got a lot to prove and I would argue that another name's receiving court has a lot to prove as well like I'm not senior pound table like you're insane to not having there in top five I'd probably have been top five I haven't done a top 10 yet of the list but they're at least in the conversation floor is not even in the conversation for me no
and unless you're just like pure going SEC bias slash recruiting ranking slash whatever nonsense that has nothing to do with what guys do on the football field so yeah Clemson needs to be on the other list thank you exactly I would take Clemson's receiving court over Ohio states yes and I would take Clemson's over noter names right now it's far more proven far more proven so I agree I think having CJ Carr will help the Notre Dame receiving court but yeah if you want to talk about proven production with TJ Moore and Bryant Westco and you've got an elite freshman class coming in you got Tyler Brown like yes Clemson's should absolutely be in this conversation yes agree so I agree I'm also selling that somebody said what about A&M hmm we'll see I mean obviously Mario Cravers really good but you know you lost case he concepts your own you're once again going to be counting on some transfer
players so we'll see we'll see how that goes we'll see how they're they're addition of Isaiah with player yeah but see here's the thing I I got all excited about how good Bama was going to be by getting Isaiah Horton last year so he has now entered proven mode for me you know like he was a nice player for Bama last year but like can you stay healthy can you step up and be the guy that I thought you're going to be when you dominated the ACC I got to see that first well and what's interesting about that pick up to and I know that there's a change in offensive coordinators but what's interesting about that pick up to is that last year we were praising that what they wanted to do on offense they're receiving court fit that mold like they got rid of like the big body guys the six four the six five dudes and they had you know Mario Craver in case he concepts your own and see what they were going to get from Terry Bussey and then a year removed from that they bring in another six foot four big body red zone target guy you know I didn't do a whole lot after the catch at Alabama so I think that's interesting we'll see how that goes yep and here's
an interesting thing too is if you watched Mario Craver after the Notre Dame game he was a very different player he was great the first three games of the year at 122 yards in the opener 114 and game two two hundred and seven against Notre Dame he only topped 75 yards twice the rest of the regular season he caught seven for 92 against Miami but like he he he did not catch a sink he had four touchdowns in the first three games of the year he finished the season with four touchdowns so can he carry that unit like what that you know we'll see great early in the years teams were trying to and in what it what I believe it was true as teams figured out what they were trying to do with that with that room because it was very different what they did offensively early in the year was very different than what they did at the beginning of the year and once teams kind of figured it out they were able to shut it out by eight affecting Marcel Reed and then two having a plan to not let Mario Craver beat him now what made that unit good as fine you want to take out Mario Craver then Casey accepts the Young Can Beach and the guy that had the big catch
that really sparked him against LSU was actually the the Young Kid Ashton Bethel Roman had that great one handed remember that one Craver like he was going on like a deep overall he was like way behind I was a phenomenal catch um you know I but I just again I just got to see that unit are they in the conversation I'd probably put him in the conversation but like I got a I got to see Isaiah Horton do it first because he he let me down last year because I I expected big things from him um their last season but yeah Miami's a no-brainer uh Oregon to me is is still a I need to still see a lot from them they've got the potential to be there but they're probably not there for me just yet either but Texas definitely is Miami definitely is we should do that soon we didn't do a top 10 receiver group ranking did we travel or did we did we do that one we're gonna do that one add it to the list I'm gonna do it it's gonna be fun from detrol hunter bicell hold north
western and eight and child's beat Michigan state this year in East Lansing dude I'm gonna hope by that one that would be amazing yeah I'd love that I would absolutely love that that just would be a great story um I don't know what to make of northwestern trev they're just so hit or miss you know how will that group of players adapt like like like here's my thing I felt that one of the issues with eight and child's is his processing wasn't the greatest he didn't though with great timing he's got first round NFL tools physical tools big kid big arm um good athlete but he doesn't have first round makeup yet maybe he does maybe he doesn't eventually get there but now you're putting him in chip kelly's offense which is notoriously difficult to learn and I worry about how that adjustment's gonna call but I would love to see that because I mean you know I'm very high on eight and child's but you know we'll see how that
adjustment period goes for them we'll see yeah as a college football fan I think that'd be a great story yeah you always kind of I don't know if it's like a redemption arc story but revenge tour type of story I don't know what all went into agent child's leaving East Lansing but they'd be cool to see as a Notre Dame fan I wouldn't want it but I don't want Michigan State I mean in less northwestern goes on to be a you know a dark horse in the big 10 which I don't I don't know if they're gonna go on to do so I'm torn the Notre Dame in fan Notre Dame fan in me doesn't want that to happen but I think it'd be a cool storyline for college football I will say this if Notre Dame is is crossing their fingers that Michigan states good to salvage their schedule then their schedule is gonna be not great oh sure yeah just say that um let's go next one Trev I'm gonna read this one because I'll get your answer first overall by so hold overall the Notre Dame depth chart is more talented than the top half does not mean
ready to play so I'm kind of taking this isn't like the younger players are better than the older players from a talent standpoint detrial hunters that kind of what you're asking or are you asking the starters are the the young players are better than the starters I'm actually a little curious about that yeah yeah I am as well I'll start giving my answer if he provides some clarity in the chat I can always switch it up but I'm gonna sell this initially based on what I think he's trying to ask as talented as like the freshman classes that came in this year and some of the pieces last year I'm selling this just strictly on defense alone we can have a floor versus ceiling debate but it's hard for me to imagine that even as talented as some of the young guys are that the they're more talented than Leonard Moore and Christian Gray and Adon Schuller anti Johnson and Drake Bowen and Jaden Osbury and I mean now we can also depending on what you're talking
about here detrol I mean the linebacker rotation brings back five all five guys that rotated in last year so if we're only talking starting lineup and we want to talk about you know like Kingston and Madden talent wise versus Drake and Jaden we can maybe have a debate but there's not an edge rusher on the roster that I'm taking right now over Puba Cartray Ori you know Bryce Young probably has the highest and that's just on the that that's just on the defensive side of the ball I mean Will Black I said this when we broke down his film when he committed he's the he is going to walk on campus and become naturally their best left tackle prospect maybe outside of curfew and now we're having discussions about seeing where he's going to line up here in four days when we get to go out there and see him so it turned out to be true Trev because he looks so good at left tackle that they just decided they could practice hard as early in the part time to make sense that's that's that's pretty sound logic but overall I'm going to sell this I get the point of what you're trying to come at because this is an exceptionally talented roster from top to bottom but the defense
the quarterback room and honestly the offensive line kind of sets that apart for me so I'm going to sell that I'm a year ago a year ago I might have bought this sure might have bought this a year ago because a year ago Kingston was part of that if we're if we're going like older versus younger Leonard was part of that CJ Car was part of that Kingston was part of that Bryce Young was part of that you know what I mean like the freshman and sophomore classes the last couple years were really really really good I think the 24 class is going to go down as Notre Dame's most underrated and overlooked and under appreciated recruiting class ever I don't think they finished in the top 10 let me let me go look at this real quick let me go 2024 including recruiting class rankings college football and see where on three and rivals or in 247 had them so 247 had that class
their own personal rankings they had that class 10th and then on three in their industry ranking had that class 11th that's a class that had CJ Car Nias Williams Keidren Young Cam Williams Micah Gilbert Gerby Lambert Anthony Napp Leonard Moore thinking Don was 23 yeah Don was 23 but like Kingston Bryce Young like think about that class that was apparently towarding them not at top 10 class according to on three rivals and it was barely top 10 by 247 that class is going to go down as woefully underrated and under appreciated yes woefully so I'm Tade Johnson is was also in that class by the way
so that class is now juniors and Marcus Freeman's first class are now seniors that's Drake that's Jaden Osbury that's Christian Gray that's Jaden Gray House Jordan Faizon it's that group Don Schuhler Don Schuhler I mean like direct did I say Drake Bon Bubacar Armel Mookam like that group was loaded as well they're now the dominant forces in that class and so I would argue that like Notre Dame's older players are even better than their younger players as of today on a per player basis now there are more younger players than older players that's the world we live in now right I mean but I still think the older players there a year ago if you just said who's who's better the juniors and seniors or the freshmen and sophomores that's a no-brainers the freshmen the sophomores you know what I mean but now it's no it's it's the older players that's where I'm at let's broaden the scope a little bit talk big picture college football
Ole Miss is on your list of teams to make a major drop off this season yeah by we talked about that we had a mailbag question on Friday I believe Trev that was who could be this year's LSU slash who was the other one Clemson Clemson or Penn State Clemson is in LSU and the only team that we really thought of the top 10 looking at ESPN's preseason top 10 was Ole Miss I could see Ole Miss even when it turned to that champ was coming back taking a big step back this year for a host of reasons that would be my most obvious well now who that is is unknown because there's no way like okay people I can't believe Trev had him right had had Penn State ranked number one I had him what Trev fourth you know what I mean like so technically I was closer to being right than you were I had a four you had a one we're all the way I'm making a joke here
but like we didn't see that coming I think we all when me you invented our our postseason predictions I think we all had Clemson in the playoffs let's see that coming the only team that we could see maybe having a drop off last year was LSU we did see that coming but two of the three that we talked about I would not have fathomed that those were especially Clemson because a a cc schedule and b they were super veteran across the board and even even LSU is to varying degrees I took the ceiling you took the floor but we still had them as ranked teams we're like hey if if everything goes poorly they're bottom half of the top 25 they finish so you're unranked I mean man but like with LSU it's like they were a couple close games away from me crack in the top 25 where Penn State was getting beat by like UCLA and you know and you're just like good lord you know it's like they were just bad Clemson was getting blown out at home by Syracuse like I kind of look at LSUs a little bit different the the margin for LSU was if you had a good coach you're
9-10 win team because you didn't have a good coach you're a six loss team I mean they lost to Ole Miss on the road by five they lost a Vanderbilt on the road by a touchdown you know they lost a to bam on the road by 11 they lost Oklahoma on the road by four and a game they had a very lately like if your coach isn't hot garbage you know then maybe you win a couple those games where when you look at like Clemson and Penn State especially Clemson it's like yeah you lost by a touchdown LSU but you lost by a field goal to George Tech but then it's like you got smoked by Syracuse you got smoked at home by SMU you gave up 46 points to flip and duke and then you got beat by Penn State in a bowl game you know what I mean like it was a wild situation and then Penn State you know I mean I know they came back against UCLA but they were getting dominated for most of that you know they got blown out by House Day but even Penn State three point lost Indiana one point lost to Iowa one point lost in Northwestern six point lost to Oregon at least they were competitive
where Clemson was just getting smacked in a couple their losses and it's just like oh man I did not see that coming did not see that coming yeah detrol Ole Miss is definitely on the list but one of the reasons why we all love college football is you just never know because for every LSU and Clemson and Penn State that happened last year I'll raise you a Virginia let's talk about Wake Forest being a nine win team let's talk about duke win in the ACC let's talk but you know what I mean so there's just so many I mean heck I thought that Arkansas was going to be pretty decent Bobby Patrino coming back his offensive coordinator Taylor Green was a year older very underrated receiving core and they were terrible not offensively but I mean good night it's just it's so up and down everywhere man that part of the field that part of the team was good yeah it was the other side of the ball he was like oh man I didn't see that coming yeah what's like Florida State two years ago who saw nobody saw that coming now detrol hunters saw them not
being as good remember he we kept getting a bunch of bicell holds about them losing their first two games and all that so he had a thought they're going to take step nobody thought they're going to be two and ten drop drop off no you know and that's the thing but I think Ole Miss is the one that I think is a candidate this season I really absolutely
