We're going to talk about why this one was mostly a math problem for the New York Knicks, now the offense lost its peace lost its birth and lost its ability to score over 100 points apparently. And where the heck was McCale Bridge is a zero point performance for him and some other struggles across the board for the next but before we get into all of it. You get Cat with 25, Brunson with 24, only other players. They even hit double figures. Landry's jam at 10, OGN and OB-13 and the Knicks ran up against some math in this when

4:06they finished this game. Just eight of 34 from three, bunch of just awful stretches of shooting. They start off one for 12, I think the third quarter, they had like a one for nine stretch. The pace wasn't there and they lose the possession battle pretty significantly. They have 18 turnovers in this game, one of their worst marks on the entire season. They only come up with 10 offensive rebounds, the Lakers conversely, 13 turnovers which is not a great number but is way less than the Knicks. They have 12 offensive rebounds, the Lakers actually don't get up, they get up one less shot than the New York Knicks do but they get up 10 more threes, they make 7 more threes, they get up 9 more free throws, they make 6 more free throws than the New York Knicks and that all in all is a recipe for a 13 point Lakers win. How did that pace actually come to pass? What was kind of the impetus for it? I think it was certainly partially some dead legs on the next part. I don't know if they have an excuse for that. They played a string of brutal games and we talked about how this stretch of schedule

5:10was going to be brutal right starting with that spurs game just over a week ago now. You go up to Toronto and then you get Oklahoma City. Obviously that took a lot out of them. You play Denver, Mile High, even in a game you win, even in a game you dominate. There was certainly a cardio tax to that and then you end up in LA. The real challenge will be to see if they have anything left in them against the Clippers tonight but it just looked like I don't like on a lot of Knicks losses this year. I've said they look disinterested. I don't particularly think that was the case in this one. I think it was the case of a team that just looks slow. We talked so much about how the great shift from that two and nine stretch to the Knicks winning, I mean 16 out of 21, coming into this game against the Lakers and going from the 29th ranked defense and that one and nine stretch to the best defense in basketball over the ensuing 21 games was just a combination of pace in everything they do, second and third

6:14efforts and honestly just buying into how Mike Brown wanted them to play like like you've seen consistently over the last month plus even off of made baskets, Jalen Brudson head up, pushing the ball up the floor, Josh Hart crashing with a band and getting out and transition every single guy in the team committed to getting the ball up the court as quickly as possible and that creates a lot of good offense for the New York Knicks and a lot of easy offense for the New York Knicks and then you have a game like this where they are consistently especially in the first half playing really really late into the shot clock and the Lakers deserve a ton of credit for that like this this Lakers team maybe some of you watch even more than I do I've seen a couple games here and there my feel has been that this team is maybe not terrible but bad defensively certainly and there are just a lot of spots to poke at like I would weigh to your old Rod Lockdown Lakers this morning or last night they were talking about how this wanted their best defensive efforts of the entire season and I think a big part of it was like

7:19the Lakers were really benefited from the fact that Lebron James sat out this game I know that sounds counter-intuitive to say about arguably the greatest player of all time but ESPN had the graphic up on the season the Lakers are eating to when they've had both Reeves and Luca and Lebron sat out they have a plus 13 net rating when Reeves and Luca are on the floor without Lebron and the Lakers just overall on the season have have a higher net rating with Lebron off the court and on the court I would imagine that is easily the first time in his career that that has ever happened and when you have no Lebron it's not that Lebron sucks it's just that you you don't really lose much offensively because it's just a little bit of a bigger load for Luca a little bit of a bigger load for Reeves they combine for 60 points 12 rebounds 9 assists in this which is we'll we'll get into a monster performance from both of them but then you just get to surround them with defenders right like Marcus Mark did a bunch of like he should one for 10 in this game and he's still a a plus 27 far away the highest plus minus of any Lakers in this game you don't want to overeat and singling and plus minus but it's representative of his activity and it is

8:22playmaking defensively you got I think one of the better defensive efforts and just efforts period from Deandre Aiden who like we we we all as an expansive complaint about Julie's Randall over the years we have complained about Karine 3 towns over the years you want to see a truly disinterested extraordinarily talented big you got a head west to DI grade because he has just not given an F the last few years but this game he played really hard early had a couple roles early he had a nice game for the Lakers and then you get there their tertiary guys like where we hot humor uh Jared Vanderbilt like uh Jackson Hayes like just all playing with like like like reckless abandon hands high active hands getting in the passing lanes and the nicks on a night where there was both in both in terms of getting out of transition and in the half court a lot of lethargy like it was very very very difficult for the nicks to create advantages and you were left with like what I think ends up being like the worst case scenario for the next

9:24Brunson coming off a two game stretch where he had 15 assists in both games 30 total Brunson finishes this game with seven assists and seven turnovers and you you also don't get like the A plus scoring type of game you you probably needed from Jalen Bronson to offset that again relative to the field he was quite good offensively eight and 19 from the field three for 18 from three five for seven from the free the line just to clarify when I say the field I mean the rest of the team I don't mean shooting from the field um yeah Jalen Jalen was like he was fine offensive in this game but you get these long stretches where he's not a factor and like another really really slow start from him in the first quarter where he he does like nothing in the like he scores this first point um at the 540 mark um of the first quarter um and like just doesn't really make an impact around this game and he stretches like like has a second quarter stretch where he checks back in and then we're down 46 33 and he takes over he's a stretch early in the fourth quarter where Reeves is out um Luke is out and he just gets to go at not that those two guys were we're good defenders on him but he's just he's going a chick LaRavia like over and over and over again and

10:26and he's having a ton of success doing it um but it has been an on like an extended stretch now for Jalen of just struggles from the field like over his last eight games he is under 40% from two point range is shooting 40% overall shooting 41% for three so that's been good 76% from the line his average just 20 and a half points per game and again his playmaking has offset that a little bit but this is like one of the and and to say that's one of the worst stretches of his next career is a testament to how incredibly good he has been over the course of his next career but it also is just true that like he he has not been like the overwhelming offensive force that you're used to and frankly like it's been somewhat of a long time since we've gotten that from him like I'm going through his game log now like he hasn't had back to back 40 point games in essentially a month like it was it was February 10th and February 8th against the Celtics and Pacers where he had 31 against the Celtics and 40 against the Pacers even before

11:28that like the time before that he had back to back 30 point games like I'm going way back in my notes he had three straight all the way back on December 22nd where he had the 47 against the heat he had the 34 against the calves in the 34 against the Hawks and to some extent you would say my my complaint is it's a little hypocritical right like we we've talked about Jalen getting off the ball more we've talked about him involving catmore and you you you want the best of both worlds and you're very rarely going to get both of them because there is there excuse me there's some trade-off there between him doing more point guard stuff and getting to take 28 shots and get into like whatever kind of rhythm he wants I just wanted to note like there should be if he is going to take less shots and he's not going to be the crazy volume scorer you want him to be there should be some ensuing bump inefficiency right less shots means he can hunt out better shots and that hasn't really happened like he's taken less shots and he's been less efficient and that has been a tough combo for the nicks offense to survive and still be like one of the best in the

12:31NBA especially when you also have a car Anthony towns they're really good offensive game in this one but a car Anthony towns that is not shooting threes with any type of volume like we will we'll circle back on this but cat at this point like since going five for nine against the calves he's made just five threes in his last seven games and you only take in this is even more discouraging it's only taking 16 total nine of them have come in the last two games so maybe that is starting to turn around a little bit but the three point ball has been low after a hot shooting stretch he has been shooting it particularly well is just one for five in this game and in turn like you're supposed to have two guys who can get 30 plus on any given night and you you've had a lot of nights recently like zero guys you can get 30 plus on any given night and that hasn't been a major issue for the nicks because you've had different players step up like we had mcale have like arguably his best game of the season against the spurs we had OG in an opi of arguably his best game of the season against the Denver Nuggets but on the nights that those guys are are not doing much and you get 21 points combined from OG heart and mcale with mcale leading the way and in the wrong way there

13:34with was zero in this game you are going to struggle to score the basket ball so the next struggles in this one very multifaceted but they all add up to a 13 point loss we're going to talk a little bit about how the end of this game went before getting doing a little bit more of a deep dive on individual individual players next right here on locked out mix. 16:41sometimes I would talk to possession batter we talked to the pace we talked about the the lakeers defense we talked about the nix lack of pace in terms of getting out in transition we can get a little bit deeper on just I mean what happened in the game in the end of this game in particular nix got off to an incredibly cold start mr first six shots Luke at eight was working really well down 11 to four by the second quarter it was a one for 12 start for three again brought some check back in nix right down by 13 and the only reason they were able to even make game of this coming into halftime is the lakeers went nearly seven and a half minutes in the second quarter without a bucket in fact they would have finished the last seven and a half minutes of the second quarter without a bucket of Austin Reeves didn't make a field goal with 0.5 seconds to go in the quarter so the next defense if you want to if you want to be optimistic about this one continue to be really locked in they they definitely had some issues in with with look at downchitch in terms of like screen navigation OG a couple times that issues getting out screens but I thought by large OG and Josh both they each got chances of OG more in the second half Josh

17:43more in the first half did a pretty good job against like luca finishes game just 11 for 25 who's five for 16 from three offset that a little bit by getting the free throw line 10 times but also had six turnovers in this game like it was not like either spike the 35 points it was not like an overwhelmingly great luca game it was just his ability unlike jalen to to get up 25 shots and to score on volume and in that sense he he owned this game it was Austin Reeves more so who just shredded the next and was really the one Laker did consistently he was 8-16-3-6-3-6-7 from the line 25 points in 39 minutes just a hyper efficient effort from him I thought the kill bridges on top of his offensive struggles had a lot of issues in screen nav and Reeves beat him a couple times with projections Reeves also just Josh Hart spinning like a dreidel on like one screen rejection or Josh thought for sure he's gonna go over Reeves Reeves one of the coldest players in the NBA with his handle right the left crossover Josh was going all the way to like sandy ego the way he was spinning off the court Reeves poured in a three

18:47he really really hurt the next else it just made a bunch of like tough like floater rain shots over cat which against like the best players in the league a lot of times you're gonna give that up like the kill could do everything right, cat could do everything right and yet if Josh or if Austin gets to his spot he might just make the shot and you just have to live with that Laker's open the third quarter with this quick 12-2 run uh luke and Reeves just crazy shot making during that stretch luke I had the one like falling out of bounds one foot 29 footer where where OG was laughing on his way up the court like like luke magic is is a little bit of of a real thing um the the painful tail end of that was uh I think it was Reeves maybe got a three or a runner there's a possession where the Lakers got three offensive rebounds in a row and you and you just again maybe maybe it was dead legs maybe you'd argue the next one have excuse to have dead legs but it just it it seemed like they didn't have their legs frankly like the Lakers got three offensive rebounds in a row thanks for crashing but not getting to the ball like it was just just one of those nights where like it felt like everything that could go wrong did go wrong and the

19:48next did not create a lot of their own luck um but then the nicks in the fourth quarter like they came to life a little bit 12-2 run uh led by Jalen Bronson you also got uh in the fourth quarter the next suddenly got an offensive bump by putting uh Jordan Clarkson into the game where he he finished with nine points in ten minutes he gave up pretty much everything he got offensively defensively where Reeves hit a three on him um canard dislodged him for three he gave up like a a four point play at one point to Luke canard uh so the defense pretty much offset it but either way like the nicks found the offensive juice they found like the verb to um to get it to eleven and then from there like completely ran at a gas part of that was that Mike Brown made the decision i would disagree with because we would like i i i i will be honest about my my own bias here if it was Tom Thibodeau i probably would have opened the podcast saying hey like what the hell you play Jalen Bronson in a game it was obvious you were going to lose the entire second half

20:51i give Mike Brown a little bit more leeway these by and large he's kept these guys minutes down but the one player who's minutes he hasn't really kept down is Jalen like you you look for the entire season last year Jalen played 35.4 minutes per game this year is playing 34.8 so there there's not really been a significant reduction in in Jalen Bronson's time on the court this season and this game in particular really pushed to Jalen plays point two and again plays pretty much every second and second half and you start down the stretch uh Jalen's kind of mentally and physically fall apart like once they cut it to 11 next get the ball about 440 left or sorry about five minutes left Jalen looking for Mikael uh loses the ball pump step through and he assumed Mikael is going to be open or he assumed Mikael is going to come to ball neither thing happened and he just zipped a pass right out of bounds next play Jalen makes the right read Mikael wide open corner three misses it because he missed every single shot he took in this game um next time down you get a stop transition Clarkson clanks a three his one miss on the game three 20 left

21:57Bronson this is a banker but Kat is right there all alone the glucose crashing but Kat's above him for tipping and Kat the ball just rolls right off his hand in the air doesn't even get the ball in the rim so you don't get that which should have been automatic and then two straight Bronson possessions where like in transition or semi-transition he drives he gets stripped by Reeves argue bull he got fouled on both it looked to me like Bronson again had had zero legs was was gassing it out by trying to trying to push his tank to the fullest extent had nothing left and and just kind of fumbled it uh two times in a row Nick's never make that push that they had a window to make after they they made a mini push and again they lose this game by 13 points um but when they come back we're gonna go rapid fire through uh everyone who played in this game and we know however important that next right here on locked on next first we got to tell you about our good friends over at fan dual college basketball it is non-stop big games tight spreads momentum swings every

All right let's finish up on a couple other guys Jalen Brunson not a ton more to say about him as I mentioned like he had some really good offensive stretches in this game the only other thing I want to note like one really unselfish play I wanted to to point out because we've seen Brunson lean a little bit more into fighting cat of late he had eaten on a switch to start the second half but instead there's an entry past the cat posting up Luke a cat drop step dunk that

26:04was really fun and then from there Brunson got into rhythm in the third quarter had to hang dribble three in eight and Xi had this nasty like reverse pivot step three where he was again just shredding Kleba and Laravia to start the fourth hit a transition three and then and then just scores one point in the final eight minutes cat I think my disappointment in this game with cat is not so much that you and Xi well from three I think this could have been like despite the fact that he didn't play some good defense on him like potentially like a 34 point game for cat if the Nixon lean even more into running pick and roll with him they they scored according to synergy like one point one points per present pick and roll die possessions which was obviously much better than their offense on the whole on the night cat finishes won again with the great stat line 25 points eight of eight from the line from two point range you shoot seven to twelve also has like 16 rebounds in this game which was obviously really useful on the night where the next did not rebound particularly well when he got off to a little bit of of a slow start as and like Deodre and did like a really

27:07good job frustrating like it's one flavor cat tried to drive by him and eaten again if he's engaged one of the few bigs in the NBA both quick enough and strong enough to like not like cat turn the corner on him cat just had to throw up like a wild shot at the rim but then he got going via the the the mcale cat pick and roll which of you if you were frequently listening to this podcast I'm constantly advocating for more of that first one they ran on the game cat had this slow roll and seal and mcale like recognize it and I like I love when when players force cat to like run into the ball with the pass they throw and he threw him like this pass over the top let him towards the rim and catch his kind of like rolled into it caught it and and got a jam and then a second quarter they run again and I think sometimes people get confused the purpose of taking roll like it doesn't always have to be like cat on a rim run it can just be to get the switch and they run it to get Luke Connard on him like one of the weaker rotation defenders in the NBA and cat can just like bump them a couple times get to his spot turn around jumper it doesn't even see Connard

28:09when he shoots it there's no way Connard he's going to block that and cat hits like an easy ISO jumper over Connard and the other one where mcale screens and rejects it that forces cat's guy to come over cat the laid roll gets right by Austin Reeves on the back cut and gets fouled up the rim for free throw so those two really effective him and Jalen had another pick and pop where he got a drive and finish over eaten and I mentioned that that post up the out of Nathan we've seen this a little bit the last couple of games like especially when the nicks offense does not have ideal spacing where cat can ISO on Deandra Aiden into a spin back jumper and like that is something again like I think in the playoffs will be an important variable for cat that he is comfortable like playing a little isolation ball and getting into his bag again he's not truly as Randall it's not something he's going to do consistently but when he has centers on him like you you will be able to see him at times like like not not just drive for layoffs but also get into a step back jumper he's good enough shooter to justify those shots it's not never going to be like a voluminous part of the nicks offense but here or there like can be a useful

29:15piece and then and then when like the backups are in and again like if teams are going to guard him straight up he's cleabon and like that's that's baby food for cat like rip through and one junk that was awesome but kale bridges if we were going to do a studs and duds on this game cat would be one of the few studs but kale would be one of the few inarguable duds I mentioned at zero points I think second time as a nicky at zero he had the gaming itself on the city last year I believe he was scarless maybe he made a single free throw in that one but this was a little bit of a low point again for mccale bridges who was just not found like any consistent offense this year and it's not shooting well like obviously had this spurs game but even including that is just 14 of 38 overs last four games I mentioned it a couple pods ago but he got off to like this great start this year shooting the ball like a three point shooting by month this year 48% October 39% November 42% December 35 and a half percent January 30% in February 36%

30:18so far in March and his two point shooting is also falling off like and some of this is the three but but overall field goal percentage 56 and a half 51 52 45.5 48.9 43.6 so far in March like it is just then another down offensive season from the tail after we all I think just incredibly excited by his start of the year and he did some good stuff and take a role as we mentioned but there's nothing offensively missed some really good looks OGN and Nobi came back down to earth after xj I think rightfully described as not just like at all NBA type performance MVP type performance against the Denver Nuggets had some good moments in this game like really really nice drive by Marcus Smart on a hesitation at one point Alvarado pushed pace to get him going in transition and his spun right at Reeves for a nice little flippant defense was was good not not a leap by OG standard the they pass at us that I didn't even know there's like number one of the NBA in in opposing

31:21field goal percentage which is the closest guy to the ball that's a pretty ringing endorsement of OG's defense even though we've certainly felt it's been inconsistent this year Josh Hart J.J. Retic I've said in the past I think as good as like any coach in the NBA maybe this side of Joe Missoula at like consistently punishing like the next players weaknesses and like scouting the next at a really high level and he was playing way off Josh Hart like you do like there was a play where Bronson got tripled after checking back into the game because they just completely ignored Josh Hart in the corner and it was a little bit on jaylor to see he drove right into OG and OG didn't space so it wasn't just that but like they were ignoring him they were saying Josh do whatever you want and this was another game where Josh was not in in any meaningful way able to punish the team for that took just one three the entire game he missed it it was again defensively Josh was good a couple times where he got the next going in transition but just like a quiet non-impactful game for Josh like 22 minutes six rebounds to assist like you you certainly unless unless Josh got hurt and I did notice you you give Mike Brown some credit for keeping the minutes

32:25down and I did wasn't working playing Landry Shamit five more minutes in this game and even like again I would play Tyler Colock before I played Jordan Clarkson I understand the positional stuff like but like just trying something else I would have maybe even thrown popcorn dotty like coming off a game where Kevin McCullough like in over Jordan Clarkson I decided to go in Jordan Clarkson that's whatever the point is it wasn't really working with Josh and I appreciate Mike Brown trying something else Shamit was good in this game 10 points to assist a couple of like he like he he was a guy who consistently made shots when the nicks were struggling I loved when Lakers went its own in the first quarter they immediately got Shamit the ball had Mitch come up and set a screen for him like that is what you want to do against his own get it to your best three point shooter get it have your best screener come up set a screen one dribble should be an easy three unless they're able to like recognize it and it big comes up and then come out of zone for that opens up his own stuff like screening against his own going back to high school basketball generally you're going to have some success that way Jose Alvarado another I thought pretty non-descript game from him after like a pretty electric

33:31start he doesn't even play in the second half nearly gets seven minutes that's assigned maybe Mike Brown is falling out of love with him a little bit maybe we will see Tyler Colock get another opportunity at some point I was pretty surprised given like the overall numbers on on the year with Alvarado that he did not get a chance in the second half but again they decide to play Brunson literally every single mid in the second half and they did not play those two together more than like a minute or two in this game as far as I noticed some fun flashes from Odio R even though he doesn't shoot well in this game just goes one for four but some of the passing was was there for him in this one the one bucket he got was on this great transition sprint where he got a layup like just filling the lane and Brunson hit him and like shows some nice athleticism catching and finishing there was another transition where cat got a rebound zipped at the Brunson Brunson bottled it and then got it up to to Moe at half court and Moe from half court just zipped a laser to sham it like like he had some some RPMs on that ball and it was it was it was it was it was just a cool pass to see from him pump and go drive for some free throws in transition

34:33and I stump up the heart for a layup and my favorite play for him just really advanced foremapping where Brunson got blitzed end of the first and he drives and he gets it to DOR DOR drives reads it last second hits OG in the corner the three went in and out but like you could just see him like as he's probing he's like all right not there not there not there great OGs open last second no look ripped into the corner did air ball three didn't seem confident shooting from three and just like Josh you always want that confidence to remain from Moe DOR all right that was probably a little long to go on this one not a super fun game hopefully tonight against the Clippers is a little more fun I will have you covered tomorrow morning from now on guys we are trying I'll mention at the start tomorrow's episode we're going to try to have all the YouTube premieres starting around 10 a.m. East Coast time for you guys hopefully everyone enjoys that but until then be sure to subscribe be sure to leave us a five star review is the best way you can off the podcast grow and we'll talk to you soon right here on Moe DOR next
