Now, back to you, better you bet with Nick Costos and the crew, presented by Bet MGM on Westwood One Sports. One college basketball note that I think is interesting, before we bring you some more breaking news in the NFL. The Mac tournament. The odds are very funny at Bet MGM, where Miami of Ohio is undefeated as you might have heard, and has become a lightning rod team in college basketball, some saying if Miami does not win its conference tournament and they've won 19 consecutive games by two points. But they keep winning, having lost the game this season, that they should not make the big dance. It feels like that talk is quelled and Miami is going to the tournament no matter what happens in the Mac conference tournament. Miami is plus 225 to win the Mac conference tournament, despite being undefeated. McRin is the favorite and minus 110, 31-0 team plus 225 to win its conference tournament.
This week is going to absolutely kick ass in college basketball. It's also going to kick ass starting soon. We are 30 minutes away from legal tampering opening, and we will start to get some NFL free agent signings. Unfortunately, it won't happen while we're on the air, but we'll bring all the analysis to you tomorrow. So we do have trade news and we brought it to you here on the show, and we also will bring you this, Perian Rappaport of NFL Media, quote, chiefs future Hall of Fame tight-end Travis Kelsey, expected to return to Kansas City for a 14th season, a message that's been delivered to teams who will want him, Kelsey actually a free agent. And I think the thought has been he was either going to retire or stay with the chiefs. 36 years old, while I disagree with this, Rappaport says Kelsey's play was at its usual level. No, it wasn't. Landing him in the pro ball. Shoulder Sanders made the pro ball, whatever, Kelsey is loyal to Kansas City and will stay.
So there you have it. Travis Kelsey will be back this season coming up for the chiefs, following a 6-11 year that left the chiefs on the outside looking in of the playoffs. And I actually think this is going to be a fascinating storyline of this off season for Kansas City and for Travis Kelsey. I don't think it was Travis Kelsey and Travis Kelsey alone. Certainly wasn't him, just him, that led to the chiefs missing the playoffs. But the way that Kelsey started the season, and this is my opinion, right, and I think I'm right about this. I'm curious if anyone would disagree. Like Kelsey's head is in too many different places. He is being pulled in too many different directions. In my opinion, and I think a lot of people will echo this both on and off the record, that the celebrity of, you know, going to barry Taylor Swift, arguably the most famous person in the world, maybe got to him a little bit. And he kind of acknowledged that it said needs to be in the game a little bit more.
So in week one on Friday night, chiefs, chargers in Brazil, when he runs the wrong route in injures Xavier Worthy, your antenna start to go up. Week two, the chiefs almost beat the Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Bowl rematch, and Kelsey bobbles a pass going into the end zone that's picked off by Tyler. Who picked that pass off? Was it Quinyon Mitchell? Reed Blankenship Cooper to Gene? I don't remember. Anyway, oh, no, it was McCuba, right, Andrew McCuba picked that pass off. And all of a sudden the chiefs are row into. So like, I don't care what anyone says. And I understand why Ian Rappaport says that, right? Because he's getting information when we have another piece of news that we will get to in a moment, which I think is very, very interesting. I don't care what anyone says. Travis Kelsey is not the same player as he once was. That's not even an insult, like he's 36 years old. As long as Kelsey, he doesn't have to be future first ballot hall of fame. And he is a future first ballot hall of fame today. He's going to the hall of fame on the first ballot.
I think there's a case to be made. He's the second best tight ended modern NFL history behind only Rob Grunkowski. He's unbelievable. The chiefs don't need him to be that. What the chiefs need him to be is focused, is focused too much commercials. Too many magazine shoots looking like the late great Scott Hall is raised a Ramon. Too much paparazzi, too many podcasts. Not enough focus on the field for Travis Kelsey. Kelsey can stay focused. Of course you want him back. But I think that's a big question heading into the year for Travis Kelsey and the Kansas City chiefs. And fascinated just fantasy football wise, like where is Kelsey going to go? I feel like his name is Travis Kelsey. So he'll probably get picked way earlier than he should in fantasy football traps. The other piece of NFL news, which is just broken literally moments ago.
The fantasy of friend of the show Mike Arifolo from NFL media. There is a team that is making quote a strong push to sign to a tongue of I Loha. I think this is fascinating. That team is the Atlanta Falcons. So again, per Mike Arifolo, the Falcons are making a strong push to sign to a tongue of I Loha. Is it possible that I was wrong a few hours ago when I said to a tongue of I Loha will not be a starting quarterback again in the NFL? It's possible. And the reason why it's possible and let's call a spade a spade right now. I think let's be honest about it. And if you listened or watched the show last summer, you know that I thought the Falcons offense was going to be awesome last year. And I was very into Michael Penex Jr. and I was very optimistic and very bullish.
The Penex might ear for the Atlanta Falcons. Let's keep it real. Let's tell the truth. Michael Penex sunk last year for Atlanta. He wasn't very good. Couldn't stay on the field. Kirk cousins had to finish the season. And when he played, he was underwhelming. Now did he have a couple strong games? Yes. Do I think he's definitely a bust? But the fact that we're here having questions about whether Michael Penex Jr. is the guy after what should have been the season that absolutely locked up that he's the guy, I think says kind of all you need to know. Matt Ryan was named the Atlanta Falcons president of football operations a couple months ago and said back on February 3rd that he wouldn't commit to Michael Penex Jr. as the starting quarterback this season. I think that goes noted. Kevin Stefansky was asked about Michael Penex Jr. at the combine and he said, quote,
I'm not big on giving out positions in February. I think you know how I feel about Michael and I'm excited about his trajectory. I also know he's focused on his rehab. That right there is coach speak. Now I have no doubt for now at least that Michael Penex Jr. will enter the season as the starting quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons and least on paper that Michael Penex Jr. will be the week one starter for Atlanta. If he falters, keep something in mind and this is really important for everybody to know. If you're listening, you're watching right now. I want you to really listen to this. The new regime in Atlanta with Matt Ryan and Ian Cunningham and head coach Kevin Stefansky. They did not draft Michael Penex Jr. They are under no obligation like the old regime was to start Michael Penex Jr.
Like do they want what would it make their lives way easier if Penex were awesome? Of course. Of course it would. But what if he's not? If the dolphin signed to a tongue of I lower or the falcon signed to a tongue of I lower, excuse me. And Penex falters, could you see two as the quarter back in Atlanta and again, like no signing has been made yet. Like nothing's happened yet. But that quote from Mike Garafolo, that report from Mike Garafolo leads you to believe that there may be something there. So if two assigns in Atlanta, you're probably going to play this year. I don't think he'll be the week one starter of Penex's healthy, but we'll to a play the season. They're also both lefties. So you have that. So if like one of the other Penex can't play, a lefty comes into the lineup. You kind of keep that continuity. I do think that matters a little bit. And Kevin Stefansky's scheme.
I actually think kind of lines up for two of. And I actually think two of might be a better fit for that scheme as crazy as this sounds than Michael Penex Jr. Last note on the falcons for now. I think what this tells you, one way whether it's two or whether it's somebody else. The falcons are not totally sold on Michael Penex Jr. Now you could spend this and say two would be signed just to be a backup. Remember what Matt Ryan said, Kevin Stefansky said, if they really felt that strongly, they would say Penex is the guy. They haven't said that. Keep an eye on the falcons in the quarterback market, whether it's via trade or whether it's via free agent signing. And I'll just irresponsibly throw out a name. And I take that I've been a workshopping. We talked about it last week with Danny Parkinson's. Is J.J. McCarthy definitely going to be on the Vikings next year?
If and when they sign Kyler Murray and you know my opinion on that, I think it should be when they sign Kyler Murray. Is a possible J.J. McCarthy could play for a different team next year. All very interesting to think about. 20 minutes from now, the legal tampering period opens in the NFL. YouTube dot com backslash at the cost those couple comments we want to get in from the hashtag real ones. Our friend Weechee says, Tua was never an NFL caliber quarterback. No idea who thought he ever was. Now to be fair, to Tua, like was his contracted disaster. Absolutely. Did we know at the time it was going to be a bad deal? Yes, and said so at the time he's not like the worst quarterback ever. Like made the playoffs a couple times has a winning record engineer and a pretty exciting offense for a little while with Mike B. Daniel. So like, is he great? No, but is he some like curtain jerk in Gibroni?
Like also, no, he's just not great. He's probably a really high end backup quarterback. That doesn't mean he's terrible. Our friend Nolan revisionist history on Tua as a prospect. Everyone thought he was the next star before he got hurt and then teams probably didn't move him down nearly enough with the injury. I think that's fair. And I think it's important to remember, it's not like we were all stupid. When Tua was at Alabama and he was like the next big thing. Remember, he relieved Jalen hurts in the national championship game and like won the national championship for Alabama on the overtime winning walkoff to Davante Smith. A tool was awesome in college. Now, wasn't a bad evaluation for Tua to get picked over Justin Herbert. Obviously, but like, yeah, that's like he's right about that. Like we don't need to like retcon this that Tua always stunk. A lot of really smart people thought Tua was going to be a monster in the NFL when he was at Alabama. Our friend Bob says Tua was never going to be a star, but in some games, he looked good. His agent absolutely hustled the dolphins in that contract.
Tough to disagree with that. Tough to disagree with that. And our buddy Mark loves Tom Brady being petty with the new England Patriots. And if you remember, talk about that in the first segments of the show, ESPN Jeremy Fowler saying that Tom Brady would not trade Max Crosby to the Patriots and Mike Vrable. If you're a Raiders fan, you have to have some real questions about Tom Brady as a minority owner of this team. And yes, he's not the majority owner, but Mark Davis, the majority owner is basically said Tom Brady's making the decisions. And yeah, on the field, Tom Brady's Michael Jordan off the field, though, unfortunately in the owner's box for the Las Vegas Raiders. It kind of feels like Tom Brady is also Michael Jordan. Final break of the show. And on the other side, we'll talk a little world baseball classic and Bryce Harper's comments about where the WBC should be played the next time it comes into the rotation. We'll give you all our bets for tonight in the world of sports and a little bit more on the Baltimore Ravens trade for Max Crosby to close up shop on a Monday.
