Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham have uncovered an immune pathway that could explain certain pregnancy complications. Led by Transplant Surgeon Dr. Page Porid, the team found that a protein called N-FAD helps special immune cells known as uterine natural killer. Cells stay in the uterus to support healthy placenta development. These cells play a key role in placentation, and problems here can lead to preeclampsia, which affects 5-8% of births in the United States. The discovery came from studying uterine tissue from women who had transplants compared to healthy volunteers. Transplant patients take a drug called tecromymus to prevent rejection, but it lowers levels of those vital immune cells by blocking N-FAD. Using advanced RNA sequencing, the researchers saw how this happens at the molecular level. Interestingly, N-FAD words differently in these uterine cells than in other immune cells like teacells.

Instead of activating attacks, it signals the cells to remain in place, which might apply to immune responses elsewhere in the body.
