New Motorway Opens for Western Sydney Airport

Officials cut the ribbon on the main section Monday morning before the Saturday launch. It features two lanes each way, 17 bridges including a 700-meter span over South Creek and a striking 30-meter still sculpture. Called the Great Emu in the Sky by indigenous designers, up to 30,000 vehicles a day are expected once fully open. A key interchange to the M-7 motorway at Cecil Hills opens mid-June to complete the network. Meanwhile, a 16-kilometer-share path for pedestrians and cyclists runs alongside, linking to the airport. The federal government funded 80 percent, with the state covering the rest. Separately, Transurban is widening 26 kilometers of the M-7 to three lanes each way, opening progressively from late this month through June, with tolls extended three years to 2051.
