Nevada Rescue: 7-Hour Climb to Save Injured Climber

0:00From Tampa Bay, this is your March 6th update. First responders in Nevada pulled off a tense 7-hour rescue for a climber, badly hurt on a steep rock face near Las Vegas. The person had fallen about 40 to 50 feet, while 600 feet up, ending up with serious head and back injuries. The climber's partner, and a guide from a nearby group quickly stepped in to control the bleeding and stabilize things until pros arrived. Rescue teams flew in by helicopter high above the spot and repelled down the face to reach the victim. Hanging mid-air, the rescuers gave on-site medical care and strapped the injured climber into a special titanium litter for safety. Officials later pointed out that the climber's helmet took a beating in the fall, but probably saved their life. From there, crews set up a lowering system and carefully brought the litter down several hundred feet through three stations, with a rescuer by the patient side the whole way. At the bottom, volunteers hauled it to a helicopter landing zone.
