North Carolina's Department of Transportation is teaming up with aviation firms and medical centers to test electric drones and vertical takeoff, aircraft. The goal is to deliver supplies and eventually passengers to rural hospitals and clinics. This makes the state one of just a few picked by the federal government for a major drone initiative. The program stems from a federal push to expand drone use nationwide. North Carolina's aim for these small electric planes to become common by 2036. North Carolina's projects stood out among more than 30 applicants, earning selection as one of eight nationwide. The federal aviation administration will offer guidance on rules like flying beyond visual range. State leaders see big potential for rural health care and disaster relief. Areas far from medical hubs often face delays in getting supplies or care. These electric vehicles promise to cut costs and noise compared to traditional helicopters

United Parcel Services drone unit will handle logistics. A public demo flight is set for the summer, starting with cargo runs between airports. Over the next three years, the effort will shift from set routes to direct tops between hospitals and landing pads.
