0:00Today, we're stepping out the back door to celebrate the private sanctuaries that transformed American play. Welcome to the National Day Spotlight for March 19th. The 1950s, the backyard shifted from a place for chores to a place for leisure and nothing to find that era more than the Whiffle Ball. Invented in a Connecticut backyard by a father watching the sun try to play baseball in a tight space, this holy plastic ball was a masterpiece of physics. It allowed kids to throw major league curves and sliders without needing a full stadium or break in the nature's windows. This simple invention, combined with the rise of the backyard patio, turned the patch of grass behind the house into a theater of imagination and support. A national backyard day, create your own private park, and the simple joys of a game that only requires a plastic bat and a little bit of green space.
