0:00Today, we're looking at the high stakes origins of our national song and the lawyer who watched it unfold from the deck of a boat. Welcome to the National Day Spotlight for March 3rd. In September 1814, Francis Scott Key wasn't looking to write a hit song. He was a lawyer on a mission to negotiate a prisoner exchange with the British Navy. During the Battle of Baltimore, the British detained Key on a ship to prevent him from revealing their positions. For 25 agonizing hours, he watched the heavy bombardment of Fort McHenry. When the smoke finally cleared the next morning, the sight of the massive star-spangled banner still waving above the fort inspired him to jot down the lines of a poem on the back of a letter. That poem was eventually set to a popular melody, but it took over a hundred years to be officially named our National Anthem. On a national anthem day, we honor the lyrics that captured a moment of resilience and the lawyer who turned a night of uncertainty into a song of victory.
