1:00Well, welcome to the round table. Everybody, my name is Robert Van and you're listening to some Broadway world over in the Broadway podcast network. I heart spotify wherever artists talk about. Our next guest is a real artist. I think he's, I think he's conquered it all. Like he's done Broadway. He's done TV. He's done films. He's like, I have nothing else to do. So I'm going to make a big giant country out. Like giant. You all follow him. Millions of followers. He dances. I don't know. What else do you do? Do you cook? Do you juggle? Are you in a circus? What do you do, Miles? Everything. Oh, man. Oh, man. Well, first of all, thank you. Thank you very, very much. No, there's many things that I don't do that I need to pick up. But I love what I do, man. And I'm just grateful to be able to do it. Well, if you love music, if you love original music, if you love storytelling, if you love it, if you love original music, if you love storytelling, if you love country music, if you like just country music, like the world of that is songwriting is where it lives nowadays, is in this genre and what you're doing.

2:02I've gotten to hear your album. I got to hear your singles. It's really beautiful. And you're telling beautiful stories. When did you come up with the idea that you had an album of original music that's your baby in you? You know what? Well, first of all, thank you for saying that this album means so much to me. It feels like my whole life is kind of lit up to this moment for me. But this past year, I signed my first deal here in Nashville. And I had been independent for a long time with my music, producing everything by myself. I grew up around a very musical family, a very supportive family. But it has just been me making the music for a long time. And then this past year, signed my first deal. And I got the opportunity to work with Dan Huff and David Huff. They have a joint venture with 1 RPM. And we came together and it just felt like the right time in my life, in the right moment, where it was like, let's go big, let's do this, and let's go all the way. And let's make a big killer album. And I have lots of songs and ideas that I really wanted to put out.

3:02And so it really just lined up, man. And it all just made sense this year to do it. I hope you listen to everybody. The single call sounds like you is out. If you can watch the music video, the music video is out on YouTube. It is really incredible. And it's very beautiful. The album is out on the fourth. It's called Handcrafted. What is hand, now to me, Handcrafted is a piece of art. It's a woodwork. It's something that is made by hand. How do you come up with the title? That's a great question. And I have a great little story about that. But and I have to give credit to my mother for this. But when I was thinking about what I wanted to title this album, I was talking to my mom about it. And I was just like, you know, I don't know. I don't really know what I want this album to be called. And I didn't want to just call it Miles Relic. I wanted to I knew I wanted to call it something. And she was asking me about the album. Like tell me about the album. And I was like, well, you know, this is the first time, really, that like everything from the bottom up is made by hand. We did this in a real studio with real musicians on a real board

4:02with with real analog gear. Like everything was done by hand. And I was telling her this and then immediately she was like, you need to call it handcrafted. And when I when she hit that to me, I was like, thanks mom. That's exactly what it's going to be called. And so that's where I never were ever. They're never wrong. They're never wrong, man. It's such a good title is the perfect title. How do you I put my own spin on it? But how do you describe the music of people are listening to this? Maybe they know you from theater or film or television? What is the what is the vibe of the album in your opinion? I think the vibe of the album is just genuine and real and raw. And I think that's just that's that's what I wanted to get across in this album. And if people that are listening to it can relate to it in any way or can turn it on and feel feel good or get in the car and bump it and have a good time or cry on one song or or laugh or party, then I've done my job. And I just wanted to I want everyone to feel good after they listen to it. And that's just want to want to do with the album.

5:03It's just be genuine and real. Do you write in a particular like you you you write? Like this is your like do you write in a particular way? Are you singing in your in your phone? Are you writing on a napkin at a restaurant? Like how does stuff come to you? How was your process? Absolutely. I mean, it's a little it's a little unorthodox, I guess, just because from a songwriting perspective a lot of the times it starts with a guitar and an idea and you write on paper. And I do do that. But a lot of the music and a lot of these songs on this album how I start my stuff is always with the music. I grew up trained by my grandmother in classical piano, grew up playing guitar and drums and music and chords and a vibe is always something that inspires me. And so I always start either on the keys or on a guitar and it's always music first for me. And that kind of gives me the idea and then I let real life kind of take it away. And then those songs just they happen how they need to happen based on that music giving me inspiration. So that's kind of how I do it. And I know it maybe it sounds a little cheesy, but that's just how it works for me.

6:07I love it. Now talking about you and your history for a moment. For people who may know or don't know for four seconds. So you are Canadian. So firstly as an American I apologize. I love you. I love can't come on. Can't it. Canada is my people up there. You are. Canada. I'm in Detroit and from my house I can see Canada across the river. And I apologize for what we do in this country all the time. You guys are so sweet and kind. I know you're now in Nashville, but we love our Canadian friends. You started in like your your a theater kid. Like you. I am. Billy Elliott. And doing theater around the country, especially in Toronto and then on Broadway. Yeah. When did you decide you were an artist? Like when did it hit you? Yeah. I mean, I feel like my I feel like it was like my whole life. And that's I'm not I'm not kind of, you know, just saying that I you know, my mother owned a performing arts studio when I was growing up. But I went to work with her one day when I was three and I ran into the studio. And that was like the beginning of it for me. And I was singing.

7:08I was dancing. I was playing music. And I just knew that that's what I wanted to do. And of course, I played lots of sports growing up as well. But when Billy Elliott, Billy Elliott came came to be. It was kind of the first real professional thing for me. And that's also when I knew I was like, this is what I want to do. And and no matter what I want to perform, I want to be on stage. I want to sing. I want to play music. And I don't want to just do one thing. But I know that this is what I have to do. He's a musical family. His mom has a form of arts center. If you know Ryan Marshall and you know matter of, I mean, yeah, that's that's that's music family. That's a musical family. Yeah, we got we got lots of music lots of lots of entertainment vibes.

8:11And so I'm lucky. I'm lucky. So then from from doing doing theater, you go to do television and and in Canada, like your work, the shows that you've done and you talk about shows like the next step and the music you put out there is a huge thing. Like you it's a huge following that you grow up and become famous. And and there these shows go on for seasons and seasons isn't scary. Is it scary to be there? And then did you feel like when you moved here, did you have to start over again? How does it work for you? How do you look? I mean, it was a little bit of that. But I think going through all of that at such a young age and doing these different things, like being on Broadway and playing, you know, performing on stages like that, to TV and film, to Disney, to feature films with Steven Spielberg in West S. And and all these different things that I've done, they're all kind of these like, they're all scary things in their own way. But for me, it's like it's it's exciting and it's not I'm not nervous in a bad way. I'm nervous because I care a lot about it. But being doing those different things kind of has given me this, I don't know, this confidence and

9:15this strength to kind of just take risks. And just I always want to go outside of the box and I always want to push the limit. And I think coming to moving to Nashville, I mean, I knew no one when I came here. I mean, five or six, five and a half years ago when I came here, I packed my car up, I drove down, I knew absolutely no one. And I came down here and and and it was it was lonely, man. It was lonely and I didn't know many people, but I knew that I needed to be here. Because something spoke to me of the energy here in town. I mean, I there's a lot of people here that can relate to this. It's like, there's just something about this town that is really hard to put into words. But when I got here, I just knew that I need to be here and I stuck through it and I pushed through a lot of lows, a lot of highs. But I've met a lot of amazing people here and it's just been it's been a journey. But this is where I need to be for sure. I love it. 11:21You dance too. If I can see a live show, even though you're playing guitar, these are your songs, can you help it? Is that still a part of your live shows? Is that part of what you're going to give? Oh man, I'm running across the stage and I'm dancing. I'm flipping on the stage. I'm not holding any of that back because that's who I am. That's who I am. Of course, the music is so important to me and the musicianship. That's all there when we play shows. You know where I came from. I can't help it. When I get on a stage and I feel the energy, and my music has a lot of energy to it. There's a lot of music that's got a little slower, a little more soul. Then there's some big energy stuff. When that stuff happens, I just can't help it. I just love running around performing. That's just who I am. I think the crowd likes it too. I think that's why they come. That's why they're here. You have not put in an album out an album in like eight years. Like me was in 2018. Yep. That's right. And people may have heard or listened to

12:23your song called All Day All Night. I don't know what happened to Tate McCray. Maybe she worked on the Burger King song. I don't know where Tate McCray is now. It is. I don't know. Where is she? Where is she? I wonder whatever happened. I'm going to have to give her a call. She was out. She was out here. And then I don't know. She has blown up to be the biggest thing in the world. She has. And this average thing for you, what about people who say, Miles, I don't like country music. I don't like singer songwriter style. I'm afraid he lives in Nashville now. Did he change his sound? Is he going to I'm not going to lose the like of it? Is there something who say, is this music for everybody? This music is absolutely for everybody. Absolutely. Because I'm not trying to be something I'm not. I grew up in the country. I mean, I grew up in the country by my parents that have formed for a long time. And that's something that a lot of people know about me. And I grew up on country music. I grew up on rock and roll. I grew up on pop music. Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Chuck Berry, Elvis, all of this music is what shaped me. And this music is this album

13:23that I made is not something that's, you know, fake and I'm trying to be something I'm not. It's who I am and it's me. And I just wanted people to hear that. And I think people will appreciate that. I love it. I want to go. You have really good whoever does your website and whoever makes your merch has really good looking merch. I mean, I actually, you know, I've been playing a couple shows this this summer. Some really cool stuff has been happening. But we we're gearing up for 20, 27 to be, you know, I'm going to be on the road. And that's going to be the plan. And we want to get out there. I want to play for as many people as possible. So that's going to be that's in the

14:25works right now. That's incredible. So we got to follow us, save to date before I let you go. So how do you going to differentiate and departmentalize your life? You have this incredible giant album that's coming out. You have live shows coming out. I'm sure you get offers. I'm sure you get auditions and self tapes or or or just flat-up phone calls to say, I want you on television. I want you to dance. I want you to do a movie. So how do you how do you juggle it all? How will you juggle it all in the future? You're not giving any of it up. No, I'm not giving any of it up at all. And you're absolutely right. There's always lots of things on the go and there's lots of there's lots of auditions, lots of different offers and TV and even Broadway stuff, you know, of some offers there as well. But I think one thing that I know is that I I want to try to do all of it. And I think there's a time when you just need to, you know, you need to focus on this for a little bit and then you move to here and then you move to here. And there's a way of doing it all rather than just kind of putting everything to the side and forgetting about it. I just love performing and I love performing on stage or in front of a

15:26camera and getting that opportunity is just something I'm super grateful for. So I think it's just one day at a time. That's most important. But also, I mean, I got big dreams. I got big goals. And that's important to have and you have to think about those. So I know you have a big party coming up in Nashville to celebrate. What's it going to feel like at midnight? The night that this comes out that now your baby is it's part of the world. It's up for the world now to take a listen. Yeah, it's so funny. Like that feeling. I've been thinking about that feeling for a while now about when that clock hits and the songs are out there to the world. And it's so cool, man. It's really hard to explain like how I've been thinking about it a lot. It's funny. You brought that up. And I'm just I'm so excited. I'm so I'm so proud of this record. And it just like I said before, it feels I don't know my whole life and everything I've done is just kind of led up to where I am right now. And I'm excited for the world to have this piece of music, this piece of work. And it's funny, this music will outlive all of us. And that's so cool about music. It's just that's so crazy to

16:29to fathom that. But I'm excited for it. And I think that's that's the best thing I can say. You know, I don't know. I guess because you're in Nashville and it's timely and we're taping this on the 26th of August. You know, I was when I was thinking about Dolly Parton and Nashville, in particular, the music. Her legacy lives on through the music and through the work. And it will live way longer than I'm alive. It will live for eternity. And when you make good, when you make good art that touches people's lives and tell stories that they need to hear, that's the legacy you're leaving with this album and with all of your work is that will be enjoyed for forever.
