Our community built a meeting hall and a softball field right across from our farm. This was our social activity and was very busy on game days, but during the week was devoid of activity save one lonely but inviting Pepsi machine. I admit, mowing hay in the front fields was a temptation to me as I would see that shiny, blue, well-lit machine each time I made a round. I would save my quarters and on rare hot dusty days, I might drive the tractor over to the ball field for a cold refreshing cola. It was a GREAT deal, a small shiny quarter in exchange for a wonderfully cold, refreshing, fizzy soft drink. One hot mid-summer day, I made the trip to the ball field, walked up to the machine, inserted my quarter and ….. nothing happened. I messed around with the machine for some time until I noticed to my horror a nice shiny, fresh, new sticker which had in bold black letters the number 35. My introduction to INFLATION!!
