On a dark night in the summer of 1864 two bankers boarded a first-class rail carriage only to discover that it was covered in blood. Clearly, a violent act had occurred, but the attacker and victim had somehow disappeared from the train. Only a few clues are left behind: a briefcase, a cane, a broken watch link, and a crumpled hat.
