Their allegedly lacing climbers food was stuff like baking powder to fake medical emergencies, triggering pricey helicopter rescues that get, built to insurance companies. This racket exploits the tough climb, where bad weather and short seasons mean rescues happen fast without much verification. Guides push tours to stage issues or amp up mild out to two sickness symptoms with extra water and pills, then chopper everyone out even if they're fine. Climbers face real risks above 3,000 meters, like headaches and low oxygen. But scammers turn that into profit by faking hospital stays and, Dr. Reports, they even charge per person on shared flights, tripling costs from 3,000 pounds to 9,000, with phony manifests to back it up. From 2022 to 2025, over 300 fake cases drain that 15 million pounds and the problem exploded despite warnings back in 2019.
